Gospel text

(Mk 10,28-31):

At that time Peter began to tell Jesus, «We have given up everything to follow you». Jesus answered, «Truly, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters, or father or mother, or children, or lands for my sake and for the Gospel, who will not receive his reward. I say to you: even in the midst of persecution he will receive a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and lands in the present time and in the world to come eternal life. Do pay attention: Many who now are first will be last, and the last, first».

The Application

We are all called to make a good discernment in life. In this discernment, we choose what is best for us and the ideal way to engage.  Our energy and time spent are our investement. Following Jesus ou emptying oueself is also can be called as an investment, because in our discernment, it is here we find the best way to live our life.

Following the Lord, is a gift from God, for we cannot become his disciple if God does not  invites us. Yet Jesus tells us that every sacrifice made in the name of the Lord, in all sincerity, will not be forgotten.  God will reveal himself to us and give us eternal life. For that,  God desires a humble and open heart, which accepts every divine proposal.

It is not good to make a survey with God, a conditional act.  If you give me this, then I will do that, as if God depends on us to do His works. We must never forget a truth of life that many of us do not realize. We do not give to receive, rather we give because we have received.  Everything belongs to God, our talents, our time, including our very being. For all that you have receioved in life, today, in what way are you going to repay to God ?

Action of the day : Be grateful to God.

Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers:

The spiritual sense of leaving the family,

by Clement of Alexandria, 150-215 A.D.

"Do not let this passage trouble you. Put it side by side with the still harder saying Jesus delivered in another place in the words, 'Whoever hates not father, and mother, and children, and his own life besides, cannot be my disciple' (Luke 14:26). Note that the God of peace, who exhorts us to love our enemies, does not arbitrarily require us literally to hate or abandon those dearest to us. But if we are to love our enemies, it must be in accordance with right reason that, by analogy we should also love our nearest relatives... But insofar as one's father, or son, or brother, becomes for you a hindrance to faith or an impediment to godly life, one should then not collude with that temptation. Attend to the spiritual, rather than the fleshly, meaning of the command." (excerpt from SALVATION OF THE RICH MAN 22.13)

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 10,28-31):

Abbé Jordi SOTORRA i Garriga

(Sabadell, Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Jn 19,25-27):

Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

The Application

What a joy to celebrate the motherhood of Mary, in the month of May? ‘Behold, your mother’ and we are all invited to make her as our own and learn from her maternity, how we can be as her worthy children. Standing at the feet of the Cross, she proved to the whole humanity, that she will stand with us, not only in our joyful moments of life, like Cana, but also, in our painful moment of life. The day of Pentecost, we have a perfect model for our prayer. She prays with us; she unites us with her son and joins us in our daily celebrations. Thus, she becomes in her faithfulness to the Son, not only our individual mother, but also the mother of the universal Church that her son willed. Let us learn from her maternity, to carry her son in joy and protect Him in our brothers and sisters, when they are crucified and judged.

Action of the day: Be a child of Mary.

«Behold, your mother»

Fr. Alexis MANIRAGABA

(Ruhengeri, Rwanda)

Today we remember Mary, Mother of the Church. In this sense, we contemplate the spiritual motherhood of Mary in connection with the Church, which is —in itself— Mother of the People of God, since "no one can have God for Father, who has not the Church for his Mother" (Saint Cyprian). Mary is the Mother of the Son of God and at the same time Mother of those who love her Son and those “well-loved” by her Son, in accordance with that “Woman, behold your son; disciple: Behold your mother” (Jn 19:26-27), just as Jesus said. Giving his body to men and returning his spirit to his Father, Jesus Christ even gave his Mother to his friends.

And the greatest love is the one with which Jesus loves the Church (Eph 5:25), to which his friends belong. Therefore, children adopted by God cannot have Jesus as brother if they do not have Mary as Mother because, while Mary loves her Son, she loves the Church of which she is an eminent member. Which does not mean that Mary is superior to the Church, but that She is "mother of the members of Christ" (St. Augustine).

The Second Vatican Council adds that Mary is "truly the mother of the members of Christ for having cooperated with her love for the faithful, who are members of that Head (Jesus), to be born into the Church." Furthermore, while remaining in the midst of the Apostles in the Upper Room (Acts 1:14), Mary —Mother of the Church— recalls the presence, gift and action of the Holy Spirit in the missionary Church. By imploring the Holy Spirit in the heart of the Church, Mary prays with the Church and prays for the Church, because "already assumed in the glory of heaven, she accompanies and protects the Church with her maternal love" (Preface to the Mass “Mary, Mother of the Church”).

Mary takes care of her children. We can, therefore, entrust to her the whole life of the Church, as did Pope Saint Paul VI: "O, Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, to you we recommend the entire Church and our ecumenical council!”

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 19,25-27):

I wish you all the best for your anniversary. Today God makes visible his Church, a church that prays, celebrates and witnesses together, as the Lord has told them. A new face of the church, unknown to the world, totally animated by the Holy Spirit. This unity in its diversity represents in a perfect way the Trinity, the divine natures, without losing any individuality.

It proclaims the good news to the people, without accusing anyone, yet by reminding them of the sin committed, it invites them to conversion.  With the Holy Spirit everything is possible. It is Peter, the one who betrayed the Lord, who today announces conversion and forgiveness. He himself has travelled this path of conversion and he will propose it to the people.  It is not his knowledge or intelligence that has led him today. He became aware of the presence of the Holy Spirit, who animated him from within. The Church of the Lord was always animated by the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit does not give us new information. He offers us insight into all that Jesus has already told us and we have not yet understood. Through his gifts of discernment and courage, he directs us to God, the Father of Jesus. He accompanies us in every stage of life, so that our discernment is right before God and in these discernments we do not stray from God's love.

For this, the Holy Spirit reveals the truth to us through the gifts of knowledge and understanding. Divine truth, especially the love of the Father and the love expressed in the death and resurrection of the Lord.  The truth of the human being, the truth of life and death, and also the truth of life in death. For a man of faith, dying for the Lord is a participation in the passion of Christ, a great gift that he can expect from God.

Our participation in the Lord's passion helps us to express our love for the Lord and to abide in that love in a perfect way.  To remain in this love of God, we need the patience that the Holy Spirit gives us as one of his gifts. Thanks to this gift, we will not be discouraged by this pandemic we are going through. Even in the midst of relational and family breakdown, in the face of illness and isolation, we will look to heaven in prayer and contemplation, so that God may reveal to us the right path, which, once faithfully followed, will lead us to joy and peace.

It is in this joy and peace that we will give glory to God and witness to his living and life-giving presence, as the disciples did on the day of Pentecost. Whatever situation or moment we are going through, may we always be inspired by the Holy Spirit. The inspiration of the Holy Spirit makes us understand the Word of God, reveals to us the divine workings of it and how we can put its message into practice.  We will be led by the love and fear of God than laws and obligations.  All our actions will be acts of love and in these acts of love the world will discover God and give glory to God. In these acts, the purely human acts, we ourselves will discover that we abide in His love and God abides in us.

Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will reveal God's presence in our daily lives and in Him we will find joy and peace. Amen.

Amen. Bonne Fête.

Gospel text

(Jn 21,20-25):

Peter looked back and saw that the disciple Jesus loved was following as well, the one who had reclined close to Jesus at the supper and had asked him, « Lord, who is to betray you?». On seeing him, Peter asked Jesus, «Lord, what about him?». Jesus answered, «If I want him to remain until I come, does that concern you? Follow me». Because of this the rumor spread in the community that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus had not said to Peter, «He will not die», but «suppose I want him to remain until I come».

It is this disciple who testifies about the things he has recorded here and we know that his testimony is true. But Jesus did many other things; if all were written down, the world itself would not hold the books recording them.

The Application

We are all called to live our life, in its fulness. This fulness that Jesus desires, is not in comparison with what others have or have not. Our life has to be totally oriented towards Jesus, our Master, how to be a faithful disciple of Him, a disciple who is in love for Christ, as Christ is in love of us.

Thus, everything is done so that we may have faith, faith in Jesus Christ, the one sent by the Father, who died and rose again, for the forgiveness of sins. Like Peter, we may also have many other questions, question on us and on others, on events and on time and space. However, the Lord invites us to focus on His Word and the way to follow him.

To follow the Lord is to listen to His Word, spoken not in the crowd, rather addressed to you and me personally, and put His Word into practice. We need to be discerning about the essentials of life and be able to ignore all that is secondary. In this faithfulness to the Lord's teaching, in our openness to the Holy Spirit, we will see how the Holy Spirit accompanies and protects us.

Action of the day: Look in to yourself and see what is reserved for you by the Lord.

«He has recorded here and we know that his testimony is true»

Fr. Fidel CATALÁN i Catalán

Today, we read the end of St. John's Gospel. Actually, it is the end of the appendix St. John's community added to the original text. In this particular case, it is a willingly significant fragment. The Resurrected Lord appears before his disciples and confirms they are to follow him, particularly as regards Peter. Next, comes the text we proclaim today in the liturgy.

The figure of the beloved disciple is central in this fragment and even in the totality of St. John's Gospel. It may refer to a concrete person —the disciple John— or, it can be a figure, behind which, any disciple loved by the Master can be placed. Whatever its meaning, the text helps to give an element of continuity to the Apostles' experience. The Resurrected Lord assures us of his presence amongst those who want to follow him.

«Suppose I want him to remain until I come» (Jn 21:22), may perhaps refer to this continuity rather than to a chronological space-time element. The beloved disciple becomes a testimony of all that, to the extent he realizes the Lord will always remain beside him. This is why he can write and his words are worth believing, because he glosses with his pen the continuous experiences of those living their mission in the midst of the world, while experiencing the presence of Jesus Christ. This beloved disciple can be each one of us provided we let be guided by the Holy Spirit, He who helps discovering this presence.

This text, already prepares us to celebrate, tomorrow, the Solemnity of Pentecost, the Gift of the Spirit: «And the Paraclete came down from Heaven: the Church's custodian and sanctifier, the souls' administrator, the castaways' pilot, the wanderers' lighthouse, the fighting ones' arbitrator and he who crowns the winners» (St. Cyril of Jerusalem).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 21,20-25):

Abbé Fidel CATALÁN i Catalán

(Terrassa, Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Jn 21,15-19):

After Jesus had revealed himself to his disciples and eaten breakfast with them, he said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” He then said to Simon Peter a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”

He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.”

The Application

It is love that is at the heart of human life. It makes us live and is capable of resurrecting us from death. It is in this love that God acts and that we are called to act. The deeper our love, the better and richer our commitment. Giving our life in this love, though painful in the process, it will be seen as a moment of joy and happiness, once the loved one get rejuvenated. Jesus showed us this path of love in his death and resurrection and Peter faithfully followed it in his own death.

Today, Paul is happy to be judged by the emperor, because he finds in this judgement an opportunity to witness to his love for the Lord. The Holy Spirit which guides him in every moment of life, helps him to see the invisible elements of life, the truth of God’s presence and accompaniment. Thus, the persecution for the faith is considered, even in the pain and suffering, as a precious gift that he will never ignore. For Paul, as for Peter, dying for the Lord is a way of following Jesus and a fruit of their faithfulness to the love of their Master.

Action of the day: Be a shepherd in the image of Christ.

«Do you love me more than these?»

Fr. Habel Jadera

 (Bogor, Indonesia)

Today, Gospel tells us another story of Jesus’ appearance to His disciples. Intensely, the dialogue between Jesus and Peter illustrates God's mercy as a great love for the disciples and the world. This is not a common dialog between Jesus and His disciple, Peter. Both Jesus and Peter talk about love according to their perspectives. Jesus’ three questions: «Do you love me more than these?» could be seen as His act of reaffirming Peter's twofold status: as a disciple who loves Him more than others do, and as a disciple who loves Him more than he loves his fellow disciples. Indeed, Jesus’ great act of love requires a depth response from Peter.

By answering «Yes, Lord, you know that I love you», Simon seems to understand his three times failures in denying Jesus, Son of God who stands in front of him, who says to the disciples «don’t be afraid», «peace be unto you» (cf. Jn 14:27; 20:19).

Jesus concludes this important dialog with the affirmation of Peter's task and the authorities which have been given before (cf. Mt 16:18-20). Especially, when Jesus said, «Look after my sheep». Regarding this fulfillment of Jesus' commissions, it requires an extraordinary love, the love that is missionary in spirit. This missionary love must be going forth, as Pope Francis says «love creates bonds and expands existence, for it draws people out of themselves and towards others».

Jesus ensures this basic characteristic of love that is missionary to be His shepherds: To love Him more than anything. Finally, as Jesus' disciples, we are all called to guarantee that the «law of ecstasy» is operated. As Pope Francis notes «the lover goes outside the self to find a fuller existence in another».
Missionary love encourages us of moving beyond ourselves!

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 21,15-19):
