Gospel text

(Lk 5,12-16): 

One day in another town, a man came to Jesus covered with leprosy. On seeing him he bowed down to the ground, and said, «Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean». Stretching out his hand, Jesus touched the man and said, «Yes, I want it. Be clean». In an instant the leprosy left him. Then Jesus instructed him, «Tell this to no one. But go and show yourself to the priest. Make an offering for your healing, as Moses prescribed; that should be a proof to the people». But the news about Jesus spread all the more, and large crowds came to him to listen and be healed of their sickness. As for Jesus, he would often withdraw to solitary places and pray.

The Application

"The divine will make us to discover the finality of life and itself will be our path, which will lead us to the God who loves us. Since the conscience that dwells in us, is a continual reminder of the voice of God, helps us to know our sinfulness that urges us to cry out to Christ, and a sincere response to this voice of God in the form of conscience, will be the first path to salvation. A pure conscience, without any modification or manipulation by carnal desire, will help us to hear this inner voice of conscience clearly, to discern and discover the divine will and execute it the best way possible in our capacity, (in today’s gospel the cry of this man can be a response to this inner voice of God.)

Knowing Jesus and the will of his Father (be purified), and putting all our energy into the accomplishment of this divine will, in our daily life, is already a purification and education of our conscience, which will lead us towards the fullness of man, the perfection of holiness, a holiness willed by God, so that man may be united to God, as Jesus is united to his Father.

For this, the soul of man, which is in that body that makes man visible to the outside world, must be configured to the Author of life, God, through Jesus in love, who reveals to us in Him, the Father and the Holy Spirit.  The process of this configuration to Christ (our sincere love for God and to our neighbors) is already a kind of withdrawal from visible society, towards a totally unknown desert, like an empty place or night, which favours a reunion of the soul with God, (certainly, through Jesus’ love), a perfect contemplation that man can desire in his humanity.

Action of the day: Aware of your sinfulness and cry to God.

«The news about Jesus spread all the more»

Today, it is our responsibility to make sure that «the news about Jesus» (Lk 5:15) keeps on spreading; mainly among those that do not know Him or who, for one reason or other, have moved away from Him.

However, this will not be possible unless we have not been previously able to identify our own particular “leprosy” and to approach Christ with our sincere belief that only He can deliver us for good from all our selfishness, jealousy, pride and bitterness...

Whether the news about Jesus largely spreads all over depends upon the “particular meetings” we may previously have had with Him. The deeper His Gospel, His love, His capacity to listen, to shelter, to forgive, to accept the other (no matter how different he or she may be) reaches into our hearts, the better we shall be able to spread His name around us.

The leper of the Gospel we read today about in the Eucharist is someone who has made a double exercise of humility. To recognize his own ailments and to accept Jesus as his savior. It is Christ who gives us the opportunity to make a radical and deep change in our life. With His testimony of life and of New Life, Christ proposes to us a totally true and possible alternative against whatever impediment for loving is encrusted in our hearts and lives. The alternative of love, of tenderness, of mercy. Confronted by someone different, (the leper), Jesus does not run away, does not get rid of him, does not suggest that he instead, goes to administrations, official institutions or some “non-governmental organizations”. Christ does accept the encounter and offers the “ailing one” what he needs; i.e. cure and purification.

We must be able to offer all those approaching our lives what we have received from our Lord. But, first, we must have met with Him to renew our engagement to live His Gospel in the small things of our daily lives.

(Lc 5,12-16): 

Jésus était dans une ville quand survint un homme couvert de lèpre; celui-ci, en voyant Jésus, tomba la face contre terre et lui demanda: «Seigneur, si tu le veux, tu peux me purifier». Jésus étendit la main, le toucha et lui dit: «Je le veux, sois purifié». A l'instant même, sa lèpre le quitta. Alors Jésus lui ordonna de ne le dire à personne: «Va plutôt te montrer au prêtre et donne pour ta purification ce que Moïse a prescrit; ta guérison sera pour les gens un témoignage». On parlait de lui de plus en plus. De grandes foules accouraient pour l'entendre et se faire guérir de leurs maladies. Mais lui se retirait dans les endroits déserts, et il priait.

L’Application

« Je le veux, sois purifier » La volonté divine nous fait découvrir la finalité de la vie et elle-même sera notre chemin,  celui-ci nous conduira vers ce Dieu qui nous aime. Puisque la conscience qui demeure, qui  est en nous, comme une voix de Dieu, qui nous pousse à crier vers le Christ, une réponse sincère à cette voix sera le premier chemin vers le salut. Une conscience pure sans aucune modification ou manipulation par le désir charnel, nous aidera à entendre cette voix clairement et à découvrir la volonté divine.

Connaitre Jésus et la volonté de son Père, et mettre toute notre énergie à l’accomplissement de cette volonté divine, dans notre vie quotidienne, est déjà une purification et éducation de notre conscience, qui nous amènera vers la plénitude de l’homme, la perfection de la sainteté, une sainteté voulue par Dieu, pour que l’homme soit uni à Dieu, comme Jésus est uni à son Père.

Pour cela, l’âme de l’homme qui est dans ce corps qui rend l’homme visible au monde extérieur, doit se configurer à l’Auteur de la vie, Dieu, à travers Jésus, qui nous révèle en Lui, le Père et l’Esprit Saint.  Le processus de cette configuration au Christ est déjà une sorte de retirage de la société visible, vers un désert totalement inconnu, comme un lieu vide ou nuit, qui favorise une réunion de l’âme à Dieu, (certes, à travers Jésus), une contemplation parfaite que l’homme peut désirer dans son humanité.

Aujourd'hui, pèse sur nous la grande responsabilité de faire en sorte que sa réputation continue de s'étendre, surtout à ceux qui ne le connaissent pas ou qui, pour des raisons ou des circonstances diverses, se sont éloignés de Lui.

Mais cette contagion serait impossible si, auparavant, chacun d'entre nous n'avait été capable de reconnaître sa propre "lèpre" et de s'approcher du Christ conscient de ce que Lui seul peut nous libérer efficacement de tous nos égoïsmes, de nos jalousies, de notre orgueil et de nos rancœurs…

Que la réputation du Christ atteigne tous les recoins de notre société dépend, en grande mesure, de ces "rencontres personnelles" que nous avons eu avec Lui. Plus nous nous imprègnerons de son Évangile, de son amour, de sa capacité d'écoute, d'accueil, de pardon, d'acceptation de l'autre (même très différent), plus nous pourrons le faire connaître autour de nous.

Le lépreux de l'Évangile qu'on lit aujourd'hui à la Messe a fait un double exercice d'humilité. Il a reconnu son mal et a accepté Jésus comme son Sauveur. Le Christ est celui qui nous offre la chance d'opérer dans notre vie un changement radical et profond. Face à tout de ce qui nous empêche d'aimer et qui s'est encrouté dans notre cœur et dans notre vie, le Christ, par son témoignage de vie et de Vie Nouvelle, nous propose une autre solution pleinement réelle et faisable. La solution de l'amour, de la tendresse, de la miséricorde. Jésus ne fuit pas devant celui qui est différent de Lui (le lépreux), Il ne s'en débarrasse pas, Il ne passe pas la facture à l'Administration, aux Institutions ou aux "ONGS". Le Christ accepte le défi de la rencontre et Il procure au malade ce dont il a besoin: guérison et purification.

Nous devons être capables d'offrir à ceux qui entrent dans nos vies ce que nous avons reçu du Seigneur. Mais il nous sera d'abord nécessaire de Le rencontrer et de renouveler notre engagement de vivre l'Évangile dans les détails de la vie quotidienne.

Gospel text

(Lk 4,14-22): 

Jesus acted with the power of the Spirit, and on his return to Galilee the news about him spread throughout all that territory. He began teaching in the synagogues of the Jews and everyone praised him.

When Jesus came to Nazareth where he had been brought up, he entered the synagogue on the sabbath as he usually did. He stood up to read and they handed him the book of the prophet Isaiah. Jesus then unrolled the scroll and found the place where it is written: «The Spirit of the Lord is upon me. He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and new sight to the blind; to free the oppressed and announce the Lord's year of mercy».

Jesus then rolled up the scroll, gave it to the attendant and sat down, while the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he said to them, «Today these prophetic words come true even as you listen». All agreed with him and were lost in wonder, while he kept on speaking of the grace of God.

The Application

It is not only the Word of Jesus; it is the person Himself that we must look at. He Himself is a message. His Words are there to help us to discover him and in him we discover the Father of Jesus. It is important that we notice in this Gospel this important information that begins with this word that tells us, "with the power of the Spirit. » He works with the Father and inspired by the Holy Spirit. He is the anointed one.

We must become aware of this truth in us the anointing we received at our baptism, thus becoming God's dwelling place. Everything in us must be moved by the Holy Spirit. In our daily lives, we may be able to discern everything and discover the divine will. However, we must be sure that the Holy Spirit will be attuned to our intention, our choice of life and the way we act. The best way to discern the divine will is by asking ourselves this question: am I doing in love and mercy?

We see in this Gospel yet another gesture of Jesus that directs us towards Him, "Jesus closed the book". Closing this book obliges us to open ourselves and look at Jesus, their eyes were fixed in Jesus. Jesus tells us that in him everything is fulfilled and today the prophecy of the prophet Isaiah is fulfilled. Today we have to work hard that, in us may this Word of Jesus that we have heard be fulfilled "to bring the Good News to the poor, to announce to the prisoners that they are free, and to the blind that they will see the light, to bring liberation to the oppressed, to announce a year of blessings granted by the Lord".

Action of the day: Be aware of the impulsion of the Holy Spirit in you.

«The Spirit of the Lord is upon me. He has anointed me»

Today, we remember that «he who loves God love his brother also» (1Jn 4:21). How can we love God, whom we do not see, when we do not love our brother who is made in God's image? After Saint Peter had disowned Him three times, Jesus asked Peter whether he loved Him: «Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you» (Jn 21:17), he said. Jesus also asks us, as He did with Saint Peter: «Do you love me?», and we want to answer: —Lord, you know all things, you know that I love you despite my weaknesses; but let me prove it to you, help me discover my brothers' needs, to truly give myself to the needy and neglected, to accept them as they are, to value them.

Love is first man's calling. The Lord calls us to give ourselves to bring true happiness to others. As Saint John of the Cross says, «at the evening of our day we shall be judged by our loving». At the evening of each day, it is appropriate that we pause to examine ourselves to determine how we expressed our love, focusing on those aspects that we need to improve to make our loving an even greater blessing to others.

In His messianic proclamation Jesus said «The Spirit of the Lord is upon me» (Lk 4:18). It is the Spirit of Love that «anointed the Messiah to bring good news to the poor» (cf. Lk 4:18), who also “rests” upon us and guides us towards perfect love: as the Second Vatican Council points out, «all the faithful ones, of any estate or condition, are welcome to the plenitude of Christian life and the perfection of Charity». If we allow it, the Holy Spirit will transform us just as He changed the Apostles, so that we can act under His influence, even as He grants us His blessings, bringing them to all our hearts, as Saint Paul wrote: «But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law» (Gal 5:22-23).

Lorsque Jésus, avec la puissance de l'Esprit, revint en Galilée, sa renommée se répandit dans toute la région. Il enseignait dans les synagogues des Juifs, et tout le monde faisait son éloge.

Il vint à Nazareth, où il avait grandi. Comme il en avait l'habitude, il entra dans la synagogue le jour du sabbat, et il se leva pour faire la lecture. On lui présenta le livre du prophète Isaïe. Il ouvrit le livre et trouva le passage où il est écrit: «L'Esprit du Seigneur est sur moi parce que le Seigneur m'a consacré par l'onction. Il m'a envoyé porter la Bonne Nouvelle aux pauvres, annoncer aux prisonniers qu'ils sont libres, et aux aveugles qu'ils verront la lumière, apporter aux opprimés la libération, annoncer une année de bienfaits accordée par le Seigneur».

Jésus referma le livre, le rendit au servant et s'assit. Tous, dans la synagogue, avaient les yeux fixés sur lui. Alors il se mit à leur dire: «Cette parole de l'Écriture, que vous venez d'entendre, c'est aujourd'hui qu'elle s'accomplit». Tous lui rendaient témoignage; et ils s'étonnaient du message de grâce qui sortait de sa bouche. Ils se demandaient: «N'est-ce pas là le fils de Joseph?».

L’Application

Ce n’est pas que la Parole de Jésus, c’est la personne Lui-même que nous devons regarder. Ses Paroles sont là pour nous aider à le découvrir et en lui nous découvrons Le Père de Jésus. Il est important que nous remarquions dans cet évangile cette information importante qui commence avec cette parole qui nous dit, « avec la puissance de l’Esprit. »

Nous devons prendre conscience de cette vérité en nous l’onction que nous avons reçue lors de notre baptême ; la demeure de Dieu. Tout en nous doit pousser par l’Esprit Saint. Dans notre vie quotidienne, nous devons d’être sure que l’Esprit Saint sera d’accorde avec notre intention, notre choix de vie et la manière dont nous agissons.

Nous voyons dans cet évangile encore un autre geste de Jésus qui nous oriente vers Lui, « Jésus referma le livre ». Fermer ce livre nous oblige de nous ouvrir et regarder Jésus. Jésus nous affirme qu’en lui tout est accompli et aujourd’hui la prophétie du prophète Isaïe. En nous que cette Parole de Jésus que nous avons entendue soit accomplie « porter la Bonne Nouvelle aux pauvres, annoncer aux prisonniers qu'ils sont libres, et aux aveugles qu'ils verront la lumière, apporter aux opprimés la libération, annoncer une année de bienfaits accordée par le Seigneur».

Aujourd'hui, nous nous rappelons que «celui qui aime Dieu aime aussi son frère» (1Jn 4,21). Comment pourrions-nous aimer Dieu que nous ne voyons pas, sans aimer ceux que nous voyons qui sont à l'image de Dieu? Après que Saint Pierre l'eut renié, Jésus lui demanda s'il l'aimait et il répondit «Seigneur tu connais toutes choses, tu sais bien que je t'aime» (Jn 21,17). Comme Il l'a fait avec Pierre, Jésus nous demande aussi «M'aimes tu?» et nous voulons lui répondre immédiatement: «Seigneur, tu connais toutes choses et tu sais que je t'aime en dépit de mes déficiences, mais aide-moi à te le démontrer, aide-moi à découvrir chez mes frères leurs besoins, à me donner vraiment aux autres, à les accepter tels qu'ils sont, à les apprécier».

La vocation de l'homme c'est l'amour, c'est la vocation de se donner, de chercher le bonheur des autres et ainsi trouver son propre bonheur. Comme disait Saint Jean de la Croix: «Au soir de notre vie nous serons jugés sur l'amour». Cela vaut la peine de nous demander à la fin de la journée en faisant un petit examen de conscience, chaque jour, comment a été cet amour et noter un aspect à améliorer pour le lendemain.

«L'esprit de Dieu est sur moi» (Lc 4,18), dira Jésus, en s'appropriant ce texte messianique. C'est l'esprit de l'Amour qui ainsi qu'il l'a fait pour le Messie «oint pour annoncer la bonne nouvelle aux pauvres» (cf. Lc 4,18), "repose" aussi sur nous et nous conduit vers l'amour parfait: comme mentionné dans le Concile Vatican II, «Il est donc clair pour tous que chacun des fidèles, peu importe son état ou son rang, est appelé à la plénitude de la vie chrétienne et à la perfection de la charité». L'Esprit Saint nous transformera comme Il l'a fait avec les Apôtres, afin que nous puissions agir sous son action, en nous donnant ses fruits, et ainsi l'apporter à tous les cœurs «le fruit de l'Esprit, au contraire, c'est la charité, la paix, la joie, la patience, la mansuétude, la bonté, la fidélité, la douceur, la tempérance» (Gal 5, 22-23).

Gospel text

(Mk 6,45-52): 

 After the five thousand men were satiated, Jesus obliged his disciples to get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, towards Bethsaida, while he himself sent the crowd away. And having sent the people off, he went by himself to the hillside to pray. When evening came, the boat was far out on the lake while he was alone on the land.

Jesus saw his disciples straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, and before daybreak he came to them walking on the lake; and he was going to pass them by. When they saw him walking on the lake, they thought it was a ghost and cried out; for they all saw him and were terrified. But at once he called to them, «Courage! It's me; don't be afraid». Then Jesus got into the boat with them and the wind died down. They were completely astonished, for they had not really grasped the fact of the loaves; their minds were dull.

The Application

"Don't be afraid", is a divine assurance. When we are confronted by our daily worries, God always comes to our rescue. Very often in our miseries, like Peter, we are unable to understand this divine accompaniment. In such situations, we are called to remain firm in where we are and call for the Lord. When everything goes wrong, no help is forthcoming, our faith and prayer can save our life. The Lord of goodness, can never let us down. His accompaniment has no limit.

This accompaniment will only be visible to us, on the day we learn to live our lives in love and that this love be united to God, to his love, the love given in his Son and the love received by humanity. It is in this love that we can build a good relationship with God. I would call it: Prayer.

Jesus was in prayer where He expressed His love for His Father.  Every relationship with God is a prayer and the moment we put his message received in prayer into practice, the actions themselves will become Prayer. In this life of contemplation (searching the divine will) and action (execution of divine will), anything we do and say will never be a simple human act. By the grace of God, they will be transformed as a Divine life, God will dwell in us and we in God. The best way to remain in God is, to remain in love.

Action of the day: Live a life filled with love and compassion.

Today, we see how Jesus, after dismissing the apostles and the crowd, goes off by himself to pray. His whole life has been a constant dialogue with the Father, and yet, he chooses to go to the hillside to pray. And what about us? How do we pray? More often than not the frantic pace of our worldly life becomes a serious obstacle for our spiritual life. And we forget that it is as equally important to “feed” our soul, as it is to feed our body. However, God and our relationship with Him does not stand high in our priorities. Under such circumstances it is difficult to truly pray. Nor is it possible to maintain a prayerful spirit when we beg for help only in times of trouble.

Finding room and time for prayer requires a yearning within us to meet God with the unshakable conviction that nobody and nothing can replace him. Without this longing to communicate with God, our prayer easily drifts into a soliloquy, a tool we use just to try to solve nagging problems. We are also easily distracted during prayer, our hearts and minds invaded by all kind of thoughts and feelings. Praying is not like chatting but rather a simple elated encounter with Love. It is our ongoing relationship with God: the silent communication between me, the poor one who needs everything, and “You”, the transcendent provider of all. The constant reward of true prayer lies in our sure knowledge that our Creator loves us.

Prayer and Christian life are inseparable. Origenes, the ancient Church Father reminds us that: «Only he who joins prayer to deeds and deeds to prayer, prays unceasingly. Only in this way can we understand what it means to pray constantly». We must indeed pray without stop to sanctify our deeds and join them to our prayer. The continuous dialogue Jesus offers us in prayer not only soothes our spirit but bring us to realize that prayer is the breath of God’s love. If we do not breathe we die; if we do not pray, we die spiritually.

(Mc 6,45-52): 

Aussitôt après, Jésus obligea ses disciples à monter dans la barque et à le précéder sur l'autre rive, vers Bethsaïde, pendant que lui-même renvoyait la foule. Quand il les eut congédiés, il s'en alla sur la montagne pour prier. Le soir venu, la barque était au milieu de la mer et lui, tout seul, à terre.

Voyant qu'ils se débattaient avec les rames, car le vent leur était contraire, il vient à eux vers la fin de la nuit en marchant sur la mer, et il allait les dépasser. En le voyant marcher sur la mer, les disciples crurent que c'était un fantôme et ils se mirent à pousser des cris, car tous l'avaient vu et ils étaient bouleversés. Mais aussitôt Jésus leur parla: «Confiance! c'est moi; n'ayez pas peur!». Il monta ensuite avec eux dans la barque et le vent tomba; et en eux-mêmes ils étaient complètement bouleversés de stupeur, car ils n'avaient pas compris la signification du miracle des pains: leur cœur était aveuglé.

L’Application

« N’Ayez pas peur », est une assurance divine. Lorsqu’on est confronté par les soucis quotidiens, Dieu vient toujours à notre secours. Très souvent dans nos misères, comme Pierre, nous n’arrivons pas à comprendre cet accompagnement divin.

Cet accompagnement ne sera visible à nous qu’au jour nous apprenions à vivre notre vie dans l’amour et que cet amour soit uni à Dieu, à son amour, l’amour donné en son Fils et l’amour reçu par l’humanité. C’est dans cet amour que nous pouvons tisser une bonne relation avec Dieu. Moi, je la nommerais : Prière. Jésus était dans la prière où Il exprimé son amour pour son Père.  Toute relation avec Dieu est une prière et le moment où nous mettons son message reçu dans la prière en pratique, les actions elles-mêmes deviendrons la Prière. Dans cette vie de la contemplation et l’action, ce ne sera plus qu’une humaine, elle sera transformer comme une vie Divine, Dieu demeurera en nous et nous en Dieu.

Gospel text

(Mk 6, 34-44): 

As Jesus went ashore he saw a large crowd, and he had compassion on them for they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began a long teaching session with them. It was now getting late, so his disciples came to him and said, «This is a lonely place and it is now late. You should send the people away and let them go to the farms and villages around here to buy themselves something to eat». Jesus replied, «You yourselves give them something to eat». They answered, «If we are to give them food, we must go and buy two hundred silver coins' worth of bread». But Jesus said, «You have some loaves: how many? Go and see». The disciples found out and said, «There are five loaves and two fish».

Then he told them to have the people sit down together in groups on the green grass. This they did in groups of hundreds and fifties. And Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish and, raising his eyes to heaven, he pronounced a blessing, broke the loaves and handed them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them. They all ate and everyone had enough. The disciples gathered up what was left and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces of bread and fish. Five thousand men had eaten there.

«They were like sheep without a shepherd»

Today, Jesus shows Himself to be sensitive to the needs of people who are in search of Him. He just cannot remain indifferent to the needs of those he meets on the way. He feels compassion when He sees the great crowd that has been following Him «like sheep without a shepherd» (Mk 6:34). The Master leaves His immediate plans aside and starts preaching. How many times have we allowed urgency or impatience manage our behavior? How many times have we not wanted to change our plans in order to help with immediate and unforeseen needs? Jesus gives us an example of flexibility, of the ability to modify plans and be available for the people who follow Him.

Time goes by quickly. When you love, it is easy for time to go by very quickly. And Jesus, who loves much, preaches at length. It gets late, the disciples remind the Master so. What worries them is how the crowd is going to feed itself. Then Jesus makes an implausible proposal: «You yourselves give them something to eat» (Mk 6:37). He is not only worried about spiritual bread but also about bodily food. The disciples find it difficult, very difficult. And it is true!: the cost would be «two hundred silver coins' worth of bread» (Mk 6:37). They see the material difficulties, but their eyes do not still recognize that He who speaks to them is almighty; they need more faith.

Jesus does not make them stand in line, he organizes them in groups. They rest and share together as a community. He asked the disciples for the food they had: only five loaves and two fish. Jesus takes them, invokes God's blessing and distributes them. Such a small amount of food will feed thousands of people and twelve baskets will exceed. This miracle introduces the spiritual bread of the Eucharist. The Bread of life that spreads freely to all the people of the Earth in order to give life and eternal life.

En débarquant, Jésus vit une grande foule. Il fut saisi de pitié envers eux, parce qu'ils étaient comme des brebis sans berger. Alors, il se mit à les instruire longuement. Déjà l'heure était avancée; ses disciples s'étaient approchés et lui disaient: «L'endroit est désert et il est déjà tard. Renvoie-les, qu'ils aillent dans les fermes et les villages des environs s'acheter de quoi manger». Il leur répondit: «Donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger». Ils répliquent: «Allons-nous dépenser le salaire de deux cents journées pour acheter du pain et leur donner à manger?». Jésus leur demande: «Combien avez-vous de pains? Allez voir». S'étant informés, ils lui disent: «Cinq, et deux poissons».

Il leur ordonna de les faire tous asseoir par groupes sur l'herbe verte. Ils s'assirent en rond par groupes de cent et de cinquante. Jésus prit les cinq pains et les deux poissons, et, levant les yeux au ciel, il prononça la bénédiction, rompit les pains, et il les donnait aux disciples pour qu'ils les distribuent. Il partagea aussi les deux poissons entre eux tous. Tous mangèrent à leur faim. Et l'on ramassa douze paniers pleins de morceaux de pain et de poisson. Ceux qui avaient mangé les pains étaient au nombre de cinq mille hommes.

Aujourd'hui, Jésus nous montre qu'Il est attentif aux nécessités des personnes qui viennent à sa rencontre. Il ne peut pas rencontrer quelqu'un et demeurer insensible à ses besoins. Le cœur de Jésus s'émeut en voyant la grande foule qui le suit «comme des brebis sans berger» (Mc 6,34). Le maître abandonne ses projets et se met à enseigner. Que de fois avons-nous laissé l'urgence ou l'impatience nous imposer notre conduite! Que de fois avons-nous refusé de changer de plan pour nous occuper de besoins immédiats et imprévus! Jésus nous donne l'exemple de la flexibilité, de l'art de modifier son programme et d'être disponible pour les personnes qui le suivent.

Le temps passe vite. Quand tu aimes, le temps passe facilement très vite. Et Jésus, qui aime beaucoup, se met longuement à expliquer la doctrine. Il se fait tard, les disciples le rappellent au maître, qui est soucieux que la foule puisse manger. Alors Jésus fait une proposition incroyable: «Donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger» (Mc 6,37). Il a non seulement le souci de donner par ses enseignements une nourriture spirituelle, Il veut aussi nourrir les corps. Les disciples voient les difficultés, réelles, très réelles. Les pains vont coûter beaucoup d'argent (cf. Mc 6,37). Ils voient les difficultés matérielles, mais leurs yeux ne savent pas reconnaître que Celui qui leur parle peut tout; leur foi n'est pas assez grande.

Jésus ne commande pas que les gens se mettent en rang debout; il les fait s'asseoir par groupes. Ensemble, ils se reposeront et partageront. Il demande aux disciples quelle nourriture ils ont emporté: seulement cinq pains et deux poissons. Jésus les prend, invoque la bénédiction de Dieu et les répartit. Un modeste repas qui servira à nourrir des milliers d'hommes et il en restera encore douze couffins. Miracle qui préfigure l'aliment spirituel de l'Eucharistie, Pain de vie qui s'étend gratuitement à tous les peuples de la Terre pour donner la vie et la vie éternelle.

Gospel text

(Mt 4,12-17.23-25): 

When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. He left Nazareth and went to settle down in Capernaum, a town by the lake of Galilee, at the border of Zebulun and Naphtali. In this way the word of the prophet Isaiah was fulfilled: «Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali crossed by the Road of the Sea, and you who live by the Jordan, Galilee, land of pagans, listen: The people who lived in darkness have seen a great light; on those who live in the land of the shadow of death, a light has shone».

From that time on Jesus began to proclaim his message, «Change your ways: the kingdom of heaven is near». Jesus went around all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom, and curing all kinds of sickness and disease among the people. The news about him spread through the whole of Syria, and the people brought all their sick to him, and all those who suffered: the possessed, the deranged, the paralyzed, and he healed them all. Large crowds followed him from Galilee and the Ten Cities, from Jerusalem, Judea, and from across the Jordan.

The Application

The life of a Christian is a life of witness, a witness to divine love. It is in this love received that we try to respond to it, through our interpersonal relationships. Through this life of love, filled with the mercy that divine love discovers. The brutal departure of John the Baptist will never stop the divine works. Let us look at the way Jesus acted after receiving the bad news.

Let us imitate this behavior of Jesus all our lives, so that the reign of God may come to us. Let the hatred disappear and the discouragement doesn’t break our good initiatives. It’s important that we become aware of His presence in us and invite Him into our heart, in to our house and in to our life. Let our life be a sign of visible presence of God. If all the baptized inherit  this behavior all their lives, even today our society will see this Light, the Christ, rise in it and the world be saved by Him. Let us never forget that God needs our humanity, so that his divinity may be established in our humanity. Are we ready to lend our humanity to God?

«The kingdom of heaven is near»

Today, we begin again, so to speak. «The people who lived in darkness have seen a great light; on those who live in the land of the shadow of death, a light has shone» (Mt 4:16), Isaiah, quoted in the gospel —which takes us back to Christmas, tells us. We start again, we get another opportunity. Our time is new, the occasion asks for it, let's humbly let the Father work in our lives.

Today we start the time that God has given us yet again, for us to sanctify, so that we can get close to Him, so that we can turn our lives into service to others. Christmas is coming to an end, next Sunday with the Baptism of the Lord, and with it the new year starts, ordinary time —as we say in Christian liturgy— to live in extenso the mystery of Christmas. The Incarnation of the Word has visited us in these days and has sown his Grace in our hearts in an infallible way, a grace which takes us back to the Kingdom of Heaven, the kingdom of God that Christ has come to open up to us with His deeds and commitment from the Heart of our humanity.

Because of that, Saint Leo the Great said that «the providence and the mercy of God, who had already thought of helping a world which was collapsing at the time, determined the salvation of all peoples through Christ».

This is the right time. We cannot think that God worked more in the past than now, that it was easier to believe in Jesus —physically, I mean— than now that we do not see Him. The sacraments of the Church and the prayer of the community grant us pardon and peace and an opportunity to participate, once again, in the works of God in the world, through our work, study, friends, family, entertainment or the daily life with our brothers. May the Lord, source of every gift and every good, make it possible for us!

(Mt 4,12-17.23-25): 

Quand Jésus apprit l'arrestation de Jean Baptiste, il se retira en Galilée. Il quitta Nazareth et vint habiter à Capharnaüm, ville située au bord du lac, dans les territoires de Zabulon et de Nephtali. Ainsi s'accomplit ce que le Seigneur avait dit par le prophète Isaïe: «Pays de Zabulon et pays de Nephtali, route de la mer et pays au-delà du Jourdain, Galilée, toi le carrefour des païens: le peuple qui habitait dans les ténèbres a vu se lever une grande lumière. Sur ceux qui habitaient dans le pays de l'ombre et de la mort, une lumière s'est levée».

A partir de ce moment, Jésus se mit à proclamer: «Convertissez-vous, car le Royaume des cieux est tout proche». Jésus, parcourant toute la Galilée, enseignait dans leurs synagogues, proclamait la Bonne Nouvelle du Royaume, guérissait toute maladie et toute infirmité dans le peuple. Sa renommée se répandit dans toute la Syrie et on lui amena tous ceux qui souffraient, atteints de maladies et de tourments de toutes sortes: possédés, épileptiques, paralysés; et il les guérit. De grandes foules le suivirent, venues de la Galilée, de la Décapole, de Jérusalem, de la Judée, et de la Transjordanie.

L’Application

La vie d’un chrétien est une vie de témoignage, témoin de l’amour divin. C’est dans cet amour reçu que nous essayons de lui répondre, à travers nos relations interpersonnelles. Par cette vie d’amour, rempli de la miséricorde que les découvrent l’amour divin. Le départ brutal de Jean Baptiste ne s’arrêtera jamais les œuvres divines. Regardons la manière dont Jésus a agi après avoir reçu la mauvaise nouvelle.

Imitons ce comportement de Jésus toute notre vie, pour que le règne de Dieu vienne jusqu’à nous. Si tous les baptisés s’habillent avec ce comportement toute leur vie, même aujourd’hui notre société verra se lever en elle cette Lumière, le Christ et qu’elle sera sauvée par Lui. N’oublions jamais que Dieu a besoin de notre humanité, pour que sa divinité s’établisse dans notre humanité. Sommes-nous prêt à prêter notre humanité à Dieu ?

«Le Royaume des cieux est tout proche»

Aujourd'hui, nous recommençons, pour ainsi dire. «Le peuple qui habitait dans les ténèbres a vu se lever une grande lumière» (Mt 4,16), nous dit le prophète Isaïe, cité dans l'Évangile du jour. Il nous réachemine vers ce que nous écoutions à Noël. Nous recommençons, une nouvelle chance nous est offerte. Un temps tout neuf: laissons humblement, à cette occasion, le Père agir dans nos vies.

Aujourd'hui débute l'époque où Dieu nous donne une fois encore son temps pour que nous le sanctifiions, pour que nous soyons près de Lui et que nous fassions de notre vie un service des autres. La période de Noël s'achèvera, si Dieu le veut, dimanche prochain, avec la fête du Baptême du Seigneur, qui tirera le coup d'envoi d'une nouvelle année -le temps ordinaire, comme on dit dans la liturgie chrétienne-, afin de vivre in extenso le mystère de Noël. L'Incarnation du Verbe nous a visités en ces jours et, infailliblement, elle a semé dans nos coeurs sa Grâce salvifique qui nous oriente de nouveau vers le Royaume des Cieux, le Règne de Dieu que le Christ est venu inaugurer parmi nous, grâce à son action et à son engagement au sein de notre humanité.

C'est la raison pour laquelle, saint Léon le Grand nous dit que «la providence et la miséricorde de Dieu, qui avait déjà pensé -dans les temps récents- à aider le monde qui s'enfonçait, a décidé le salut de tous les peuples par l'intermédiaire de Jésus-Christ».

Voici le temps favorable. Ne pensons pas que Dieu agissait davantage auparavant, qu'il était plus facile de croire auprès de Jésus -physiquement, veux-je dire-, qu'à présent où nous ne le voyons plus tel qu'Il est. Les sacrements de l'Église et la prière communautaire nous obtiennent le pardon et la paix, ainsi que la possibilité de participer de nouveau à l'œuvre de Dieu dans le monde par notre travail, notre étude, notre famille, nos amis, nos divertissements ou notre vie parmi nos frères. Que le Seigneur, source de tout don et de tout bien, nous le permette!
