Gospel text

(Mt 1,18-24):

This is how Jesus Christ was born. Mary his mother had been given to Joseph in marriage but before they lived together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph, her husband, made plans to divorce her in all secrecy. He was an upright man, and in no way did he want to discredit her.

While he was pondering over this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, «Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. She has conceived by the Holy Spirit, and now she will bear a son. You shall call him “Jesus” for he will save his people from their sins». All this happened in order to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: «The virgin will conceive and bear a son, and he will be called Emmanuel which means: “God-with-us”». When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do and he took his wife to his home.

The Application

Yesterday I told you that the Incarnation not only reveals to us the divine plan, His love for humanity, but also reveals to us the humanity as it was willed by the Lord. If God chose our humanity, because he wished that through the Incarnation, man will meet the divinity in his own humanity.

The Gospel of the day reveals to us once again, in a purely human commitment of Joseph, in a humanity par excellence, in his person (this year is already declared as a year of St. Joseph), the same humanity that God wanted from the beginning of creation and what is still proposed to the humanity of the day.

In his silence, through the strongest possible commitment for a man, an excellent discretion, that Joseph cooperates with God, for the accomplishment of the divine will. The Incarnate will thus find, a dwelling worthy of Him, on earth, by mankind, a dwelling carefully prepared by God.

If you want to hear, we are this dwelling that God is preparing today for his only Son. We must ask ourselves this fundamental question; our heart is it worthy to welcome him? Do we want to make a worthy home for him through our conversion?

Action of the day : Be Courageous

«Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife»

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench

(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, the liturgy of the Word invites us to think of the wonderful example St. Joseph gives us. He was extremely sensitive towards Mary, his betrothed.

There is no doubt that both were excellent people, in love with each other like no other couple. However, it is plain to see that the Almighty wanted their love to go through some very demanding circumstances.

The Pope saint John Paul II has written that «Christianity is a surprise from a God who has taken sides with his creature». As a matter of fact, He has taken the initiative: To come to this world He has not waited for us to deserve it. He proposes His initiative; He does not impose it upon us: It is as though God asked us for “permission”. To Mary He proposed —never imposed anything!— the vocation of being the Mother of God: «He, who had the power to create everything from nothing, had refused to rebuild what had been desecrated if Mary had not agreed to it» (Saint Anselm).

But God, not only is asking us for permission, He also wants us to take part in His plans, to make a heroic contribution. And so it was for Mary and Joseph. In fact the Christ-child needed parents. Even more so: He needed his parent's heroism, for they had to go to extremes to defend the life of the “little Redeemer”.

What is really beautiful is that Mary revealed only a few details of her childbearing: Such an important fact is reported in just two verses (cf. Lk 2:6-7). On the other hand, she was more explicit when speaking of Joseph's thoughtfulness towards her. The fact was that «before they lived together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit» (Mt 1:19), and in order not to risk discrediting her, he would have preferred to disappear discretely and to renounce her love (something that was socially unfavorable to him). Thus, before the law of charity had been proclaimed, Saint Joseph was already practicing it: Mary (and his loving attentions with her) was his law.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 1,18-24):

Abbé Antoni CAROL i Hostench

Gospel text

(Mt 1,1-17):

This is the document of the origins of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham. Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers. Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah (their mother was Tamar), Perez was the father of Hezron, and Hezron of Aram. Aram was the father of Aminadab, Aminadab of Nahshon, Nahshon of Salmon. Salmon was the father of Boaz. His mother was Rahab. Boaz was the father of Obed. His mother was Ruth. Obed was the father of Jesse. Jesse was the father of David, the king.

David was the father of Solomon. His mother had been Uriah's wife. Solomon was the father of Rehoboam. Then came the kings: Abijah, Asaph, Jehoshaphat, Joram, Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manasseh, Amon, Josiah. Josiah was the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the deportation to Babylon.

After the deportation to Babylon Jechoniah was the father of Salathiel and Salathiel of Zerubbabel. Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud, Abiud of Eliakim, and Eliakim of Azor. Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, and Akim the father of Eliud. Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar of Matthan, and Matthan of Jacob. Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and from her came Jesus who is called the Christ —the Messiah. There were then fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, and fourteen generations from David to the deportation to Babylon, and fourteen generations from the deportation to Babylon to the birth of Christ.

The Application

God has chosen to use our own humanity, to make us to understand the divine mysteries. Without this humanity, its very difficult for us to understand the depth of God love. It’s an act of love and doesn’t have any limit. God continues to make us to understand this love.

If we still find difficult to understand this divine simplicity, it’s because, very often, we don’t act humanely, and act rather with animosity which is colored in our humanity, thinking that its purely human. The incarnation is not only of the divine revelation, it is also a revelation of pure humanity, which is very close to divine. The incarnation reveals to us that the more we become human, the closer we become divine in our acts.

Action of the day: Try to be human.

«This is the document of the origins of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham»

Fr. Vicenç GUINOT i Gómez

(Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Spain)

Today, when we read the genealogy of Jesus in the liturgy of the Mass, a sentence commonly said in rural areas here in Catalonia, Spain, comes to mind: « Josephs, Johns and donkeys are to be found in every house». That's why, in order to make a difference between them, one uses the household name. Thus, they say, for example, Joseph from Filomena's, John from Josefina's... In this way, a person is easily identified. The problem is that people become branded by the good or bad name of their ancestors. This is what happens with the «Genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham» (Mt 1:1).

What Matthew is saying is that Jesus is a real man. In other words, that Jesus —just like every man and every woman who comes into this world— does not start from zero, but brings with him a certain historical baggage. This means that the Incarnation is something deliberate, that when God is made man, He is made man with all the consequences. When he comes to this world, the Son of God, brings with him a family past.

Going down through the characters that make up the list we can see that Jesus —as far as family genealogy goes— does not possess “clean report”. As Cardinal Nguyen van Thuan wrote, «in this world, if a people writes its official history, it will speak of its grandeur... It is a unique, admirable and splendid thing to find a people which, in its official history, does not hide the sins of its ancestors». Sins like homicide (David), idolatry (Solomon) or prostitution (Rahab) appear. Along with these, though, there are moments of grace and of faithfulness to God, especially when we talk of Joseph and Mary, from whom «came Jesus who is called the Christ ¬—the Messiah» (Mt 1:16).

To sum up, Jesus' genealogy helps us contemplate the mystery that we are about to celebrate: that God became Man, true Man, and «he had his tent pitched among us» (Jn 1:14).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 1,1-17):

Abbé Vicenç GUINOT i Gómez

Gospel text

(Lk 7,19-23):

The disciples of John gave him all this news. So he called two of them and sent them to the Lord with this message, «Are you the one we are expecting, or should we wait for another?». These men came to Jesus and said, «John the Baptist sent us to ask you: ‘Are you the one we are to expect, or should we wait for another?’».

At that time Jesus healed many people of their sicknesses or diseases; He freed them from evil spirits and He gave sight to the blind. Then He answered the messengers, «Go back and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind see again, the lame walk, lepers are made clean, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the poor are given good news. Now, listen: Fortunate are those who encounter me, but not for their downfall».

The Application

John Baptist not only prepared the way for the Lord; he even prepared the first disciples of the Lord. They too were formed by him. He will send them towards the Lord, so that they may have a personal and intime relationship with the Lord. Jesus will invite them to open the eyes and see what’s happening there, and to interpret them, as the accomplishment of the prophets. They will be, in later days, to be invited to come and stay with Him. Before becoming the disciple of Jesus, it’s better to be the disciple of John the Baptist.

In this invitation and their immediate positive response will help them to discover the God of creation, the earth and the heaven. They will experience the creative and protective power of God, in the healing mission of Jesus. They will understand the liberating mission of Jesus, which will be theirs’ one day.

This advent season is a wonderful means for us to have the same experience of the disciples of John the Baptist, an invitation to have a divine encounter. This encounter will give us the light, liberate us from our ignorance, and will show us the path of freedom and justice.

Action of the day: Lean to be the disciple of John Baptist, to discover Jesus, the Savior of the world.

«The blind see again, the lame walk, lepers are made clean...»

Fr. Bernat GIMENO i Capín

(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, when we may realize we do not know what to expect of our life; when, at times, we lose our hopes and do not dare to look beyond our own shortcomings; when we are glad to be faithful to Jesus Christ and, at the same time, we are fretful or feeling low for not savoring the fruits of our apostolic mission, the Lord wants us to ask ourselves, as John the Baptist did: «Should we wait for another?» (Lk 7:20).

Sure enough, the Lord is “smart”, and He wants to take advantage of our uncertainty —otherwise, quite a normal one— so that we can completely examine our life, and detect our failings, our dark, our wickedness... thus, being able to strengthen our faith and “endlessly” multiply our expectations.

The Lord has no limits when it comes to accomplish his mission: «The blind see again, the lame walk, lepers are made clean...» (Lk 7:22). Where are my hopes placed? Where is my joy resting? Because our hopes and our interior joy are intimately related. It goes without saying that Christians must, of course, live like any other normal person, but they must always keep their eyes fixed on Jesus Christ, that will never fail us. No Christian can live his life by ignoring Christ's life and his Gospel. Let us center our gaze upon him, Almighty, and let us set no limits to our hopes. «You will find in Him much more than you can ask for or desire» (St. John of the Cross).

Liturgy is not a “sacred game”, and our Church gives us this time of Advent because the Church wants each believer to revive in Christ the virtue of hope in his life. Quite often, we lose it because we tend to exceedingly entrust our own forces and do not wish to see ourselves as an “ailing child” in need of the Lord's healing hand. But this is how it must be, and since He knows us well and is fully aware we are all made from the same “material”, He offers us his helping hand. —Thanks, O Lord, for rescuing me out of the mud and fill up my heart with hope.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 7,19-23):

Abbé Bernat GIMENO i Capín

(Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mt 21,28-32):

Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people, «What do you think of this? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said to him: ‘Son, today go and work in my vineyard’. And the son answered: ‘I don't want to’. But later he thought better of it and went. Then the father went to the second and gave him the same command. This son replied: ‘I will go, sir’, but he did not go. Which of the two did what the father wanted?». They answered, «The first». And Jesus said to them, «Truly, I say to you: the publicans and the prostitutes are ahead of you on the way to the kingdom of heaven. For John came to show you the way of goodness but you did not believe him, yet the publicans and the prostitutes did. You were witnesses of this, but you neither repented nor believed him».

The Application

To believe or faith is a grace from God. Faith helps us to look at the signs of the day and makes it easier for us to interpret them as God's messengers.  However, we cannot control everything at the same time. We need space and time, so that we are before the truth. Many of us find very difficult to understand how God acts or accompanies us in our personal life. All that we need is the patience, ready to relook into our life and when needed, make the necessary changes. There is no fun in saying that I didn’t obey and regret for the past deeds throughout the life.

Conversion is only possible if man learns to connect with the truth and be aware of present status. In the time of Jesus, John the Baptist was a sign of the truth, who helped people to discover the Light that was already among them. He reminded them their own weakness and helped them to accept the baptism of conversion. If we want to walk in the light, we need to know how to look at and interpret the signs of the day, to be able to understand God's message and the readiness to respond positively to the divine call.

Action of the day: Be open and vigilant.

«The son answered: ‘I don't want to’. But later he thought better of it and went»

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench

(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we contemplate the father who had two sons and went to the first and said to him: «Son, today go and work in my vineyard» (Mt 21:28). And he answered: «‘I don't want to’. But later he thought better of it and went» (Mt 21:29). Then, he also went to the second with the same command. And he replied: «‘I will go, sir’, but he did not go» (cf. Mt 21:30). What really matters is not saying “yes”, but “doing it”. As the saying goes «actions speak louder than words».

On another occasion, Jesus will refer to the doctrine taught by this parable: «Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’, will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in Heaven» (Mt 7:21). As Saint Augustine wrote, «there are two wills. Your will has to be corrected so as to identify it with God's will; but do not try to bend God's will to adapt it to yours». In the Catalan language we say a child “believes” you to mean he obeys you. There is an identification of obedience and faith, of the reationship that exists between trust and obedience.

Obedience comes from the Latin composition “ob-audire”: meaning, to listen with great attention. And this is should be evident in our prayer, in our not turning “a deaf ear” to the voice of Love. «We men tend to “defend ourselves”, to adhere to our selfishness. But God demands that, when obeying Him, we put our faith to work. At times, our Lord suggests what He wants in a whisper, deep, down, inside our conscience: we must remain on high alert to be able to distinguish his voice and be faithful to it» (Saint Josemaria Escrivà). To abide by God's will implies becoming a saint; to obey does not mean to be a puppet in someone else's hands, but to interiorize what we must accomplish: and then, to do it “because you feel like it”.

Our Mother, the Virgin Mary, a great teacher of obedience to the faith, will show us the way to learn how to obey the will of the Father.

Abbé Antoni CAROL i Hostench

Gospel text

(Mt 21,23-27):

Jesus had entered the Temple and was teaching when the chief priests, the teachers of the Law and the Jewish authorities came to him and asked, «What authority have you to act like this? Who gave you authority to do all this?». Jesus answered them, «I will also ask you a question, only one. And if you give me an answer, then I will tell you by what authority I do these things. When John began to baptize, was it a work of God, or was it merely something human?». They reasoned out among themselves, «If we reply that it was a work of God, he will say: ‘Why, then, did you not believe him?’. And if we say: ‘The baptism of John was merely something human’, beware of the people: since all hold John as a prophet». So they answered Jesus, «We do not know». And Jesus said to them, «Neither will I tell you by what right I do these things».

The Application

Sometime it happens in our own personal life that people ask question, not necessarily for an answer. When these people are responded with an interrogation, they are lost, because in their question, they were not sincere and faithful. In today’s gospel, Jesus teach us to face such people courageously.

Thus in today’s gospel, I will rather change my question, from the authority to sincerity and faithfulness. Lord what should I do to identify the graces that you have given to me, and particularly to use such divine grace which are specail and extrodinary ? You have given us the intelligence to see, observe and perceive, to hear and understand, and to listen in the language of silence. Help us Lord to ask the right question, for a better understanding. Teach us Lord to see into the right direction, for a better and true vision of life.

Action of the day : Learn to see everything with an eye of faith, for a better understanding of God’s work in you.

«What authority have you to act like this? Who gave you authority to do all this?»

Fr. Melcior QUEROL i Solà

(Ribes de Freser, Girona, Spain)

Today, the Gospel looks at two aspects of Jesus' personality: His shrewdness and His authority. Let's take his shrewdness first: He knows the heart of man deeply, he knows the inner life of all those who approach him. And when the High Priests and the authorities are sent to maliciously ask him: «What authority have you to act like this? Who gave you authority to do all this?» (Mt 21:23), Jesus, who knows their falseness, replies with another question: «When John began to baptize, was it a work of God, or was it merely something human?» (Mt 21:25). They do not know what to answer, because if they say that it came from God, they would be in contradiction with themselves for not having believed it, and if they say that it came from men they would be up against the people, who saw John as a prophet. They find themselves painted into a corner. Cunningly, with a simple question, Jesus has exposed their hypocrisy; He has given them the truth. And the truth is always uncomfortable, it can knock one off balance.

We should have the shrewdness of Jesus, to knock that which is a lie off its kilter. So many times the sons of darkness use all their astuteness to achieve more money, more power and more prestige; while we sons of light seem to have our asuteness and imagination somewhat asleep. Just in the same way that a worldly man uses his imagination to serve his interest, we Christians have to use our talents to serve God and the Gospel. For example: when one is before a person who speaks ill of the Church (as often happens), do we know how to respond with a reply that stops them in their tracks. Or, in a work environment, with a colleague who lives only for himself and “doesn´t give a damn”, do we know how to return good for evil? If we love him as Jesus did, our presence will be “uncomfortable” for him.

Jesus exercised his authority because of the deep knowledge he had of people and of situations. We are also called to have this authority. It is a gift that comes from above. The more we try to put everything in its place —the small things of every day— the more will we know how to deal with different people and different situations, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 21,23-27):

Abbé Melcior QUEROL i Solà
