Gospel text

(Lk 9,22-25):

Jesus said, «The Son of Man must suffer many things. He will be rejected by the elders and chief priests and teachers of the Law, and put to death. Then after three days he will be raised to life». Jesus also said to all the people, «If you wish to be a follower of mine, deny yourself and take up your cross each day, and follow me. For if you choose to save your life, you will lose it, and if you choose to lose your life for my sake, you will save it. What does it profit you to gain the whole world while you destroy or damage yourself?».

The Application

The Lenten season is always considered as entering into a desert like experience, associating it with penance, sacrifices, fasting, etc. Entering into the desert like experience, I share it without any hesitation. However, associating this desert like experience with penance, and suffering, I would hesitate to accept it in its totality, provided, these penance and pains that we assume in our daily life, do help us to take us one level up towards God, towards the perfection of holiness.

The desert experience is the courage to be alone, be alone with Christ. Many of us refuse to take this way of life, being alone is terrible. In fact, it is by wilfully allowing to disconnect ourselves from the extra unnecessary accessories of life that we enter in direct contact with the Lord. It is in this desert life, in our own pains and suffering, when we find alone, that our encounter with God becomes very rich, sincere and wonderful. Thus such desert life, a life in the darkness, will certainly lead us towards the Light, the Light of the Lord.

Renouncing oneself, is taking the original self with us, and venturing into the desert, to be alone with the Lord. A moment of joy and grace.  Once we have taken this as a daily cross of life (emptying oneself), every moment of our daily life, become a rich moment of contemplation and this listening to the will of God, will help us to choose the life. In our own freedom, we engage in accomplishing this will, by obeying the divine commandment of love. Isn’t it by dying that we choose to reborn?

Action of the day: Learn to take the daily cross.

«If you wish to be a follower of mine, deny yourself and take up your cross each day, and follow me»

Fr. Josep Mª MASSANA i Mola OFM
(Barcelona, Spain)

Today is the first Thursday of Lent. The ashes our Church laid yesterday on our forehead are still fresh; and are meant to remind us of a forty days journey. In the Gospel, Jesus, shows us two routes: the way of the cross he must undergo, and our own way to follow him.

His path is the Way of the Cross and that of death, but also that of His Glory: «The Son of Man must suffer many things (...), and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. » (Lk 9:22). The route we must take is, essentially, the same one Jesus took, and He shows us how to follow it: «If any man would come after Me...» (Lk 9:23).

Hugging his Cross, Jesus complied with the Will of His Father; as for us, carrying ours on our shoulders, we follow him in his Way of the Cross.

The path of Jesus is summarized in three words: suffering, dying, raising from the dead. Three aspects constitute our own footpath too (two attitudes and the essence of our Christian vocation): Self-Denial, taking up our cross every day of our life and following Jesus.

If we do not deny ourselves and do not take up our cross, we are only seeking to affirm and be ourselves; we want «to save our life», as Jesus says. Yet, by wanting to save it, we will lose it. On the other hand, those who, because of Jesus, will not strive to avoid their suffering and the cross, will save their lives. It is the resulting paradox of our following Jesus: «For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?» (Lk 9:25).

Our Lord's words, closing today's Gospel, tremendously shook Saint Ignatius and sparked off his conversion: «What would happen if I would do just as saint Francis and saint Dominic did?». If only, in this Lent, the same words would help us to reach our conversion, too...!

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 9,22-25):

Abbé Josep Mª MASSANA i Mola OFM
(Barcelona, Espagne)

Lenten Message 2020

We enter Lent by celebrating Ash Wednesday. On this occasion, the Holy Father addresses us with this injunction: "We beseech you in the name of Christ, be reconciled to God. "(2 Cor 5:20).  In my parish I have proposed the theme of reconversion, reconciliation et come back to me, to guide us in these forty days of penance and prayer. All Christian community leaders will be exhorting the faithful to be merciful, charitable, humble, open, welcoming, etc. to profit from this privileged moment of the year. From the very beginning of this Lenten season, each one of us, according to his or her ability and according to his or her needs, will prepare a project, closely linked to prayer, almsgiving and fasting, to help us to respond positively to the call  of holiness (Lev 19. 2 )that the Father desires for us.

Some of you, who are associated to the clarétains in France will certainly know, for us Claretians of Marseilles it is a Jubilee Year, 100 years of Claretian presence in Marseilles. I invite you to enter into this Lenten time with a sense of gratitude and thanksgiving to God for the graces that we have received. This time of Lent will be a time of joy and happiness, because we will live intensely with the Lord, admitting that this life is not enough for us to give thanks to Him. During this season, whatever moment we wish to live, may it bring us to the Lord, may it become a privileged moment, a moment totally dedicated to us in our march towards holiness, to our brothers and sisters in charity and to God in our faithfulness.

This time of Lent invites us to evaluate our life, our interiority which is visible only to the Lord.  To do this, it is necessary to know how to ask certain questions, in all sincerity, and to seek the true answers, from our own interiority. Where am I now? Am I Mary who listens to the Word of God or Martha who is worried and agitated about many things, that are secondary? (Lk 10:38-45) Am I the prodigal son who says: "I will arise and go to my Father" or the eldest son who refused to participate in the proposed feast? (Lk 15:11-32).

First of all, conversion is an invitation to recognize the love of the beloved Father, a Father who awaits us, to know how to welcome a life given and a life received in Jesus Christ.  It awakens us from our drowsy state of life and helps us to recognize our own identity inherited in Jesus Christ, as children of God, a life no longer according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. (Rom 8:9-10). The Holy Father reminds us in his Lenten message, and I quote: "Let us therefore, in this favorable time, be led like Israel into the desert (cf. Hos 2:16), so that we may at last hear the voice of our Bridegroom, to make it resound in us with greater depth and availability. »  Let us  thus, voluntarily enter into this desert life of forty days, fully animated by the Holy Spirit, to live alone with Christ, to be totally configured in Him.

It is through this life in Christ that we are called to be reconciled with God, through our brothers and sisters. It is in reconciliation that we receive grace. That is why Lent is a time of renewal for the Church through the baptized who commit themselves for peace and reconciliation, both personal and communitarian. In this renewal process, Lent becomes a time of grace. (2Cor. 6; 2) Therefore this conversion, which asks us to reconcile ourselves with one another, can no longer be an individual act, but a communal act. God desires to save not only individuals, but an entire people, the beloved of the Father. He desires that we be neither divided nor separated as individuals, but be united as ONE people of God (Jn 17:20-22).

This people will walk as a pilgrim, oriented towards the perfection willed by the Lord. (Ecclesiam Soum 43). In this journey towards the Lord, they will meet God in the hearts of men. This is why Pope Paul VI will tell us that revelation is a dialogue. (Ecclesiam Soum). God continues to reveal Himself and to speak to us. He speaks to us through the suffering of the excluded and isolated, the hungry, the victims, the migrants, etc. (Ecclesiam Soum). The Holy Father Francis in his exhortation 'GAUDETE ET EXCULTATE' asked us this fundamental question, 'can holiness be understood outside of this living recognition of the dignity of every human being?

The Holy Father in his Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation, 'QUERIDA AMAZONIA' which has just come out, shares with us his dreams: social, cultural and ecological. Let us broaden his dreams! I invite you to join me in his dreams.  May the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God accompany us. The reconciliation and conversion, do call us to participate and engage actively to the accomplishment of this amazonite dream of the Holy Father.

I wish you a good Lent, and a very beautiful preparation for the Lord's Passover.

Gospel text

(Mk 9,30-37):

Jesus and his disciples made their way through Galilee; but Jesus did not want people to know where he was because he was teaching his disciples. And He told them, «The Son of Man will be delivered into human hands. They will kill him, but three days after he has been killed, He will rise». The disciples, however, did not understand these words and they were afraid to ask him what He meant.

They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house, Jesus asked them, «What were you discussing on the way?». But they did not answer because they had been arguing about who was the greatest. Then he sat down, called the Twelve and said to them, «If someone wants to be first, let him be last of all and servant of all». Then He took a little child, placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it he said to them, «Whoever welcomes a child such as this in my name, welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me, welcomes not me but the One who sent me».

The Application

I always say to the persons who approach me for accompaniment, that the way to happiness is to find what is good in us, (our talents and strengths).  And by developing them, that they may reach through our positive engagement, their fulfilment. Anything we may receive from their accomplishment, including the glory that the world may duly accord to us, belong essentially to the person who has put in us. The person who develops it, in his humility, should acknowledge the author. If we start to compare us with others, the disappointment and sadness will be the result.

Accepting what we have, doesn’t mean to choose only what is pleasing to us, and ignoring what is unpleasant. Jesus has accepted the Cross that the Father has proposed for the salvation of the world. It is in this very Cross that He will save the world. In humility, we should also learn to accept such crosses in our daily life, which will evidently lead us towards the resurrection.

Jesus is teaching us that we can’t separate the cross from the resurrection. It’s here that the disciples ignored the most important teachings of the Lord. What is interesting for us today is, the proximity that the Lord wishes to create with His disciples. He takes the initiative and goes closer to His disciples. He continues to create this proximity with us, so that we may understand Him and respond positively to His call to holiness. Are we ready to welcome Jesus in our daily life?

Action of the day: Listen attentively.

«The Son of Man will be delivered into human hands»

Fr, Jordi PASCUAL i Bancells
(Salt, Girona, Spain)

Today, the Gospel teaches us two lessons of Jesus, that are closely linked together. On the one hand, He tells them that «they will kill him, but three days after He has been killed, He will rise» (Mk 9:31). The Father's purpose for His coming to this world, was precisely this: to set us free from sin's slavery and eternal death; thus, we shall become the sons of God. Jesus' greatest form of submission —His death on the cross— shows God's infinite love for humanity: a measureless Love, a Love that does not mind facing the madness and scandal of the Cross.

On the other hand, it is terrifying, to see the Apostles' reaction. They were just too busy thinking of themselves only and forgetting to learn from their Master: «The disciples, however, did not understand these words» (Mk 9:32), because they had been arguing on the way about who was the greatest, and they were afraid to ask Him anything, lest they could be scolded.

With delicate patience, Jesus adds: let him be last of all and servant of all. We have to look for the simple and small, because the Lord identified Himself with them. We have to receive Jesus in our life; thus, we shall be opening the doors to the very same God. It is like programming our life to keep on going.

This is how the holy Rector of Ars, John Baptist Mary Vianney explains it: «Each time we put the needs of others above our own, and provided this does not go against God's Law, we are achieving merits God only knows about». Jesus teaches with these words, but mostly He teaches with His deeds. Those Apostles, who were, in principle, supposed to understand him, but did not quite, after the Cross and Resurrection, will follow in the footsteps of their Lord and their God. And, accompanied by the Holy Virgin Mary, they will grow smaller and smaller every day to let Jesus grow in them and in the world.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 9,30-37):

Abbé Jordi PASCUAL i Bancells
(Salt, Girona, Espagne)

Gospel text (Mk 9,14-29):

When Jesus came to the place where they had left the disciples, they saw many people around and some teachers of the Law arguing with them. When the people saw Jesus, they were astonished and ran to greet him. He asked, «What are you arguing about with them?». A man answered him from the crowd, «Master, I brought my son to you for he has a dumb spirit. Whenever the spirit seizes him, it throws him down and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth and becomes stiff all over. I asked your disciples to drive the spirit out, but they could not».

Jesus replied, «You faithless people. How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to me». And they brought the boy to him. As soon as the spirit saw Jesus, it shook and convulsed the boy who fell on the ground and began rolling about, foaming at the mouth. Then Jesus asked the father, «How long has this been happening to him?». He replied, «From childhood. And it has often thrown him into the fire and into the water to destroy him. If you can do anything, have pity on us and help us». Jesus said to him, «Why do you say: ‘If you can?’ All things are possible for one who believes». Immediately the father of the boy cried out, «I do believe, but help the little faith I have».

Jesus saw that the crowd was increasing rapidly, so he ordered the evil spirit, «Dumb and deaf spirit, I command you: Leave the boy and never enter him again». The evil spirit shook and convulsed the boy and with a terrible shriek came out. The boy lay like a corpse and people said, «He is dead». But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him and the boy stood up. After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, «Why couldn't we drive out the spirit?». And he answered, «Only prayer can drive out this kind, nothing else».

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

Emerging faith seeks maturity,

by Augustine of Hippo, 354-430 A.D.

"In saying, 'When the Son of Man shall come, shall he find faith upon the earth?' our Lord spoke of that faith which is fully matured, which is so seldom found on earth. The church's faith is full, for who would come here if there were no fullness of faith? And whose faith when fully matured would not move mountains (Matthew 17:20; 21:22)? Look at the apostles themselves, who would not have left all they had, trodden under foot this world's hope, and followed the Lord, if they had not had proportionally great faith. And yet if they had already experienced a completely matured faith, they would have not said to the Lord, 'Increase our faith' (Luke 17:5). Rather we find here an emerging faith, which is not yet full faith, in that father who when he had presented to the Lord his son to be cured of an evil spirit and was asked whether he believed, answered, 'Lord, I believe, help me in my unbelief' (Mark 9:24). 'Lord,' says he, 'I believe.' 'I believe': therefore there was faith; but 'help me in my unbelief': therefore there was not full faith (Hebrews 10:22)." (excerpt from  SERMONS ON NEW TESTAMENT LESSONS 65)

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 9,14-29):

Gospel text

(Mt 16,13-19):

When Jesus came to Caesarea Philippi, He asked his disciples, «Who do people say the Son of man is?». They said, «For some of them you are John the Baptist, for others Elijah or Jeremiah or one of the prophets». Jesus asked them, «But you, who do you say I am?». Peter answered, «You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God».

Jesus replied, «It is well for you, Simon Barjona, for it is not flesh or blood that has revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. And now I say to you: You are Peter (or Rock) and on this rock I will build my Church; and never will the powers of death overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and what you unbind on earth shall be unbound in heaven».

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

Who do people say that the Son of Man is?

by John Chrysostom (347-407 AD)

"Note that he is not asking them their own opinion. Rather, he asks the opinion of the people. Why? In order to contrast the opinion of the people with the disciples answer to the question 'But who do you say that I am?' In this way, by the manner of his inquiry, they might be drawn gradually to a more sublime notion and not fall into the same common view as that of the multitude.
"Note that Jesus does not raise this question at the beginning of his preaching but only after he had done many miracles, had talked through with them many lofty teachings, and had given them many clear proofs of his divinity and of his union with the Father. Only then does he put this question to them.
"He did not ask 'Who do the scribes and Pharisees say that I am?' even though they had often come to him and discoursed with him. Rather, he begins his questioning by asking 'Who do men say the Son of man is?' as if to inquire about common opinion. Even if common opinion was far less true than it might have been, it was at least relatively more free from malice than the opinions of the religious leaders, which was teeming with bad motives.
"He signifies how earnestly he desires this divine economy to be confessed when he says, 'Who do men say the Son of man is?'" for he thereby denotes his godhead, which he does also in many other places.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 16,13-19):

Abbé Antoni CAROL i Hostench
