Gospel text

 (Jn 20,11-18): 

Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she bent down to look inside; she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had been, one at the head, and the other at the feet. They said, «Woman, why are you weeping?». She answered, «Because they have taken my Lord and I don't know where they have put him». As she said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not recognize him. Jesus said to her, «Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?». She thought it was the gardener and answered him, «Lord, if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and remove him». Jesus said to her, «Mary». She turned and said to him, «Rabboni» —which means, “Master”. Jesus said to her, «Do not cling to me; you see I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them: ‘I am ascending to my Father, who is your Father, to my God, who is your God’». So Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, «I have seen the Lord, and this is what he said to me».

The Application

Mary Magdalene, who loved the Lord, wanted to return to Him who is worthy of Him, always keeping her sadness of having lost Him brutally and unjustly. Her love was so deep that she forgot herself and sought her beloved. Staring at the place where the body of her beloved was laid, in all sadness she wept bitterly, for today there is nothing left for her, so that she could mourn, as she should, and complete all that she began and reached today to demonstrate her love. Many of us are feeling the same, particularly in this lockdown.

In her deep sadness she is no longer herself, and she sees nothing but her bitterness. Yet before her own eyes, the angels have taken their own place, covering everything possible from His head to His feet, empty as a desert, as was foreseen right from the beginning of creation, the promised salvation, He is truly risen. They clothed themselves in white, a sign of peace, which shined in the tomb like a bright light. Everything went unnoticed for this lover. Very often we live in the same way in our sadness and brokenness.  

She was not abandoned by the Lord, whom she loved and was looking for today. He came back to her, and he called her 'Mary', as he always called her. She heard the voice, a voice she was so used to, that she thought she has lost. She didn't want to lose Him again and she will hold Him as hard and intensely as she can, more than ever before. Many of us have the same approach in life. We hold on something as if it gives life. The day has come for us to give life to others, give hope to others. We have to stop seeking, rather start to giving.

It is here that Jesus is going to entrust her with a mission so dear to Him, the mission that His Father entrusted to Him, and He did not want to lose even 'one'. She is going to run, leaving the Lord there, with the certainty of having him for an eternity and for ever, towards his disciples, to announce to them that He has truly risen and I had seen him. What a testimony and what love! Today I invite you to express our love for the Lord like Her, with certainty, and let us welcome the mission that He is going to entrust to us.

Action of the day: be a messenger of the Lord.

Today, in the figure of Mary of Magdala we may contemplate two levels of acceptance of our Savior: the first one, imperfect; complete, the second one. According to the first one, Mary appears as the most sincere of Jesus' disciples. She follows him, unmatched Master; heroically, she sticks to Jesus, crucified because of his love; she looks for him, beyond death, buried and missing. How full of admirable and humble submission to her “Lord” are her two exclamations that, as two unique pearls, the evangelist John has kept for us: «They have taken my Lord and I don't know where they have put him» (Jn 20:13); «Lord, if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and remove him»! (Jn 20:15). History has seen few disciples as loyal and full of affection as Mary of Magdala.

Notwithstanding, the good news of this Tuesday, octave of Easter, far exceeds all ethical uprightness and religious faith in an admirable Jesus, but in the last instance, death, to take us to an ambience of faith in Jesus Christ Resurrected. A Jesus Christ that, in the first moment, taking her from the level of imperfect faith, asks Mary of Magdala: «Woman, why are you weeping?» (Jn 20:15) To which, with myopic eyes, she replies to as a farmer only interested in her own anxiety would; a Jesus, now, that in a second and definitive moment, calls her by her name: «Mary»! to move and shake her up with resurrection and life, that is, with Himself, Resurrected and Alive Forever. Outcome? Mary of Magdala believer and Mary of Magdala, apostle: «So Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’» (Jn 20:18).

It is not infrequent today to find many Christians that cannot clearly see what will come after this life and who, therefore, have doubts about Jesus' resurrection. Am I among them? On the other hand, there are too those Christians who have enough faith to follow Jesus privately, but who are afraid of apostolically proclaiming it. Do I belong to these ones? If this were the case, let us tell him, as Mary of Magdala did: «Master!», let us cling to his feet and let us go to our brothers and tell them: —The Lord has risen and I have seen him!

Marie Madeleine restait là dehors, à pleurer devant le tombeau. Elle se penche vers l'intérieur, tout en larmes, et, à l'endroit où le corps de Jésus avait été déposé, elle aperçoit deux anges vêtus de blanc, assis l'un à la tête et l'autre aux pieds. Ils lui demandent: «Femme, pourquoi pleures-tu?». Elle leur répond: «On a enlevé le Seigneur mon Maître, et je ne sais pas où on l'a mis». Tout en disant cela, elle se retourne et aperçoit Jésus qui était là, mais elle ne savait pas que c'était Jésus. Jésus lui demande : «Femme, pourquoi pleures-tu? Qui cherches-tu?». Le prenant pour le gardien, elle lui répond: «Si c'est toi qui l'as emporté, dis-moi où tu l'as mis, et moi, j'irai le reprendre». Jésus lui dit alors: «Marie!». Elle se tourne vers lui et lui dit: «Rabbouni!» ce qui veut dire: «Maître» dans la langue des Juifs. Jésus reprend: «Cesse de me tenir, je ne suis pas encore monté vers le Père. Va plutôt trouver mes frères pour leur dire que je monte vers mon Père et votre Père, vers mon Dieu et votre Dieu». Marie Madeleine s'en va donc annoncer aux disciples: «J'ai vu le Seigneur, et voilà ce qu'il m'a dit».

L’Application

Marie Madeleine qui a aimé le Seigneur a voulu Lui rendre qui est digne de Lui, gardant toujours sa tristesse de l’avoir perdu brutalement et injustement. Son amour était si profond qu’elle s’oubliait et cherchait son bien aimé. Fixant son regard où on déposait le corps de son bienaimé, en toute tristesse elle pleure amèrement, car aujourd’hui, il ne reste rien pour elle, pour qu’elle puisse faire son deuil, comme il faut et achever tout ce qu’elle a commencé et à parvenir aujourd’hui pour démontrer son amour.

Dans sa tristesse profonde elle n’est plus elle-même, et elle n’aperçoit rien que son amèrement. Pourtant, devant son regard, les anges ont pris leur propre place, couvrant tout ce qui était possible, de la tête jusqu’à ses pieds, vide comme un désert, comme il était prévu dès le commencement de la création, le salut promis, Il est vraiment ressuscité. Ils se sont habillés blanc, un signe de la paix, qui a brillé le tombeau, comme une lumière éclatante. Tout se passait inaperçu pour cette amoureuse. Très souvent nous vivons pareillement dans notre tristesse, déchirement.

Elle n’était pas abandonnée par le Seigneur qu’elle cherchait. Il reviendra vers elle, et il l’appela, ‘Marie’, comme il l’appelait toujours. Elle a bien entendu la voix, une voix qu’elle était si habitué, qu’elle croyait perdu. Elle n’a pas voulu Le perdre encore une fois et elle va Le tenir le plus fort possible, plus que jamais. C’est ici jésus va lui confier une mission si chère à Lui, la mission que son Père Lui a confiée, n’a pas voulu perdre, même pas ‘une.’ Elle va courir, en laissant le Seigneur là-bas, avec la certitude de l’avoir pour une éternité et pour jamais, vers ses disciples, pour les annoncer, qu’il est vraiment ressuscité et je l’avais vu. Quel témoignage et quel amour ! Aujourd’hui, je vous invite à vous exprimer votre amour pour le Seigneur, et accueillons la mission qu’Il va nous confier.

Aujourd'hui sur le visage de Marie-Madeleine, nous pouvons apercevoir deux degrés d'acceptation de notre Sauveur: le premier, imparfait; le second plénier. Dès le premier, Marie se montre disciple très sincère de Jésus. Elle le suit, maître incomparable; héroïque, elle s'attache à lui, qui est crucifié par amour; elle le cherche, au-delà de la mort, enseveli et disparu. Qu'elles sont pleines d'admirable dévouement à leur “Seigneur”, ces deux exclamations que l'évangéliste Jean nous a laissées, perles incomparables: «On a enlevé le Seigneur mon Maître, et je ne sais pas où on l'a mis» (Jn 20:13); «Si c'est toi qui l'as emporté, dis-moi où tu l'as mis, et moi, j'irai le reprendre»! (Jn 20:15). Peu de disciples a contemplé l'histoire si attachés et loyaux comme la Madeleine.

Cependant, la bonne nouvelle d'aujourd’hui, de ce mardi de l'octave de Pâques, dépasse infiniment n'importe quelle excellence morale, n'importe quelle foi religieuse dans un Jésus admirable, mais, finalement, mort. Elle nous transporte dans le domaine de la foi dans le Résussiscité. Jésus dans un premier temps, s'adresse à Madeleine, en se plaçant au niveau de la foi imparfaite. Il lui demande: «Femme, pourquoi pleures-tu?» (Jn 20:15) Avec des yeux myopes, elle lui répond comme à quelqu'un qui s'intéresserait à son désarroi. Jésus, ensuite, l'appelle par son nom: «Marie!». Il la frappe au point de la faire frémir de résurrection et de vie, c'est-à-dire, de Lui-même, le Ressuscité, le Vivant pour toujours. Et voici Madeleine croyante et Madeleine apôtre «s'en va donc annoncer aux disciples: ’J'ai vu le Seigneur, et voilà ce qu'il m'a dit’» (Jn 20:18).

Aujourd'hui, nombre des chrétiens ne voient pas clairement l'au-delà de leur vie et, doutent de la résurrection de Jésus. Sui-je comme eux? Beaucoup de chrétiens ont la foi, suivent Jésus dans l'intimité, mais craignant de le proclamer. Suis-je comme eux? Alors, disons-lui, comme Marie-Madeleine: «Maître!», saisissons ses pieds et allons trouver nos frères pour leur dire: —Le Seigneur est ressuscité et je l'ai vu!

Gospel text

(Mt 28,8-15): 

The women left the tomb at once in holy fear, yet with great joy, and they ran to tell the news to the disciples. Suddenly, Jesus met them on the way and said, «Peace». The women approached him, embraced his feet and worshiped him. But Jesus said to them, «Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to set out for Galilee; there they will see me».

While the women were on their way, the guards returned to the city and some of them reported to the chief priests all that had happened. The chief priests met with the Jewish authorities and decided to give the soldiers a good sum of money, with this instruction, «Say that his disciples came by night while you were asleep, and stole the body of Jesus. If Pilate comes to know of this, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble». The soldiers accepted the money and did as they were told. This story has circulated among the Jews until this day.

The Application

I wish you all  a blessed EASTER

The joy and the fear dance together in the heart of these women. However, this dance will be certainly dominated by the joy of meeting the Lord, the Resurrected ONE. It is in this very encounter with the Lord, they become the missionaries, the apostles of the resurrection. Certainly, strange for us to understand the choice of these women to announce the resurrection. This is the way God functions. He elevates some from nothing, to make us to understand the depth of their love for the Lord and they are certainly recompensated for this sincere love, beyond their expectations.

Jesus announces the peace, the divine peace, which these women weren’t searching, but desperately in need of the present time. God knows what to give and when to give, provided we understand and accept these graces, because it comes not on our expected terms and conditions, rather, in a strange and unexpected time or from unexpected and from least expected persons.

Once we welcome and we aware of this grace from God, there is a perfect adoration, a Eucharistic adoration of holding the Lord, the fear of missing Him once again. To our surprise, He will ask us to get up and march, go and announce the good news to all, particularly His beloved ones. Don’t be afraid to be small, or little ones, or of nothing. Simply go and do what I have asked you to do.

What a mission to accomplish and they will certainly accomplish this mission entrusted to them. They will give hope to the Apostles of the Lord. They will give them a new spare of life, a thread to hold on, little fine message to carry on. That all they were in need and the rest; the Lord will take care of.

We have lived this Pascal event in a special way. It’s a history which was imposed and will be cherished by many of us, for generations to come. God wished to give us this special gift and we were called to make use of this time in a wonderful way. There will be many more such encounters we will have in these days, not only of our salvation history, but also of our own personal of the da. I invite you all to have the spirit of Emmaus disciples, so that at the end, we could witness just like them, ‘our heart wasn’t burning?’

Action of the Day: Be open to the divine grace.

Today, the joy of resurrection has made brave messengers out of those women that went to Christ's tomb. The angel's announcement of the Master's resurrection filled their hearts with «great joy». And, immediately after, they “ran out”, to tell the news to the Apostles. They simply could not stand idle, their hearts bursting should they not let the disciples know about the great news. Paul's words resound in our souls: «For the love of Christ constrains us» (2Cor 5:14).

Jesus contrives to a “chance meeting” with Mary of Magdala and the other Mary —this is how Christ rewards their courage to look for him early in the morning—, and He does it too with all men and women of this world. Not only, because of his Incarnation, He has, in a certain way, become a man too.

Women's reactions before the Lord express the deepest attitudes of human beings before He who is our Creator and Redeemer: submission —«embraced his feet» (Mt 28:9)— and worship. What a lesson for all of us regarding what our attitude ought to be always before Christ in the Eucharist!

«Do not be afraid» (Mt 28:10), Jesus tells the pious women. Afraid of our Lord? Never, as He is the Love of loves! Afraid to lose him? Yes, because we are well aware of our feebleness. This is why we embrace his feet so strongly. As the Apostles in the stormy sea and as the disciples of Emaus when they beg him: Lord, do not leave us!

And the Master sends the women to his disciples so they can see him too. This is also our task, and our divine mission, since the day of our baptism: to proclaim Christ all over the World «so that everybody may find Christ, so that Christ may join each one of us in our journey through life, with the power of the truth (...) contained in the mystery of Encarnation and Redemption, with the power of the love He irradiates» (John Paul II).

Vite, elles quittèrent le tombeau, tremblantes et toutes joyeuses, et elles coururent porter la nouvelle aux disciples. Et voici que Jésus vint à leur rencontre et leur dit: «Je vous salue». Elles s'approchèrent et, lui saisissant les pieds, elles se prosternèrent devant lui. Alors Jésus leur dit: «Soyez sans crainte, allez annoncer à mes frères qu'ils doivent se rendre en Galilée : c'est là qu'ils me verront».

Tandis qu'elles étaient en chemin, quelques-uns des hommes chargés de garder le tombeau allèrent en ville annoncer aux chefs des prêtres tout ce qui s'était passé. Ceux-ci, après s'être réunis avec les anciens et avoir tenu conseil, donnèrent aux soldats une forte somme en leur disant: «Voilà ce que vous raconterez: ‘Ses disciples sont venus voler le corps, la nuit pendant que nous dormions’. Et si tout cela vient aux oreilles du gouverneur, nous lui expliquerons la chose, et nous vous éviterons tout ennui». Les soldats prirent l'argent et suivirent la leçon. Et cette explication s'est propagée chez les Juifs jusqu'à ce jour.

L’Application

Je vous souhaite une joyeuse Pâques. 

Nous sommes partis de cette histoire du confinement et avons vécu un moment fort. Nous commençons le temps de Pâque et vivrons désormais, non pas dans la peur et l’inquiétude, mais dans la joie et de l’espérance. Les femmes ont voulu garder la peur et la joie était certainement triomphante.  Nous sommons appelés à vivre cette espérance et cette joie que la fête nous apporte.

Nous entendrons beaucoup d’autre témoignages pleins d’espérance de joie, non seulement de l’histoire du salut, mais aussi de notre propre histoire du jour, qui est là nôtre.  Le message est certainement consolant, «Soyez sans crainte, allez annoncer à mes frères qu'ils doivent se rendre en Galilée : c'est là qu'ils me verront». Ils Le verront et nous Le verrons. Dans ce message, Jésus a choisi ces femmes comme les premiers témoins de la résurrection, qui n’étaient pas forcement de ses disciples de premier banc, formés directement par le Seigneur.

Voilà le miracle visible de notre propre vocation : ‘allez annoncer.’ Annonçons en ces jours courageusement, cette parole d’espérance de la Pâque du Seigneur : « soyez sans crainte. » En annonçant cette bonne nouvelle, n’oublions pas les véritables rencontres que Dieu nous proposera sur le chemin. Nous entendrons certainement les mensonges des hommes responsables, politiques et civiles. Il faut discerner tout et savoir choisir qui est la bonne et vraie. Choisissons notre Maître et le discernement s'actualisera de facto, au fur et à mesure que cela sera nécessaire.

Aujourd'hui la joie de la résurrection fait des femmes qui sont allées au tombeau, de courageuses messagères du Christ. Elles sont «toutes joyeuses» dans leur cœurs à cause de l'annonce de l'Ange que leur Maître est ressuscité. Puis elles quittèrent le tombeau “et coururent” porter la nouvelle aux disciples. Elles ne peuvent rester inactives et leurs cœurs éclateraient si elles ne pouvaient pas en parler à tous les disciples. Dans nos âmes résonnent les mots de Paul: «En effet, l'amour du Christ nous saisit» (2Co 5:14).

Et voici que Jésus vint à leur rencontre: il le fait avec Marie-Madeleine et avec l'autre Marie —c'est ainsi que Christ les remercie et qu'il récompense l'audace d'aller le chercher de bonne heure—, et il le fait aussi avec tout homme et toute femme. Mieux encore, le Christ par son Incarnation s'est uni à chacun de nous.

Les réactions de ces femmes en présence du Seigneur expriment au plus haut degré les attitudes les plus profondes de l'être humain devant Celui qui est notre Créateur et Rédempteur: la soumission totale —«et, lui saisissant les pieds, elles se prosternèrent devant lui» (Mt 28:9)— et l'adoration. Quelle leçon pour nous ! Elles nous indiquent notre attitude envers le Christ Eucharistie!

«Soyez sans crainte» (Mt 28:10), dit Jésus aux saintes femmes. Crainte du Seigneur? Jamais. Puisqu'il est l'Amour des nos amours! Crainte de le perdre, sans doute, parce que nous connaissons nos faiblesses. Aussi saisissons-nous très fort ses pieds. Comme les Apôtres, surpris par une furieuse tempête, comme les disciples d’Emmaüs, nous lui demandons: Seigneur, nous t'en prions, ne nous abandonne pas!

Et le Maître envoie les femmes aux disciples afin qu'ils puissent le voir. C'est là notre tâche quotidienne et notre mission divine depuis notre baptême: annoncer le Christ partout «que tout homme puisse retrouver le Christ, afin que le Christ puisse parcourir la route de l'existence, en compagnie de chacun, avec la puissance de la vérité sur l'homme et sur le monde contenue dans le mystère de l'Incarnation et de la Rédemption, avec la puissance de l'amour qui en rayonne» (Jean Paul II).

Que se passe-t-il ? Aujourd'hui, grand silence sur la terre ; grand silence et ensuite solitude parce que le Roi sommeille. La terre a tremblé et elle s'est apaisée, parce que Dieu s'est endormi dans la chair et il a éveillé ceux qui dorment depuis les origines. Dieu est mort dans la chair et le séjour des morts s'est mis à trembler. ~

C'est le premier homme qu'il va chercher, comme la brebis perdue. Il veut aussi visiter ceux qui demeurent dans les ténèbres et dans l'ombre de la mort. Oui. c'est vers Adam captif, en même temps que vers Ève, captive elle aussi, que Dieu se dirige, et son Fils avec lui, pour les délivrer de leurs douleurs. ~

Le Seigneur s'est avancé vers eux, muni de la croix, l'arme de sa victoire. Lorsqu'il le vit, Adam, le premier homme, se frappant la poitrine dans sa stupeur, s'écria vers tous les autres : « Mon Seigneur avec nous tous ! » Et le Christ répondit à Adam : « Et avec ton esprit ». Il le prend par la main et le relève en disant : Éveille-toi, ô toi qui dors, relève-toi d'entre les morts, et le Christ t'illuminera.

« C'est moi ton Dieu, qui, pour toi, suis devenu ton fils ; c'est moi qui, pour toi et pour tes descendants, te parle maintenant et qui, par ma puissance, ordonne à ceux qui sont dans les chaînes : Sortez. À ceux qui sont dans les ténèbres : Soyez illuminés. À  ceux qui sont endormis : Relevez-vous.

« Je te l'ordonne : Éveille-toi, ô toi qui dors, je ne t'ai pas créé pour que tu demeures captif du séjour des morts. Relève-toi d'entre les morts : moi, je suis la vie des morts. Lève-toi, œuvre de mes mains ; lève-toi, mon semblable qui as été créé à mon image. Éveille-toi, sortons d'ici. Car tu es en moi, et moi en toi, nous sommes une seule personne indivisible.

« C'est pour toi que moi, ton Dieu, je suis devenu ton fils ; c est pour toi que moi, le Maître, j'ai pris ta forme d'esclave ; c'est pour toi que moi, qui domine les cieux, je suis venu sur la terre et au-dessous de la terre ; c'est pour toi, l'homme, que je suis devenu comme un homme abandonné, libre entre les morts ; c'est pour toi, qui es sorti du jardin, que j'ai été livré aux Juifs dans un jardin et que j'ai été crucifié dans un jardin.

« Vois les crachats sur mon visage ; c'est pour toi que je les ai subis afin de te ramener à ton premier souffle de vie. Vois les soufflets sur mes joues : je les ai subis pour rétablir ta forme défigurée afin de la restaurer à mon image.

« Vois la flagellation sur mon dos, que j'ai subie pour éloigner le fardeau de tes péchés qui pesait sur ton dos. Vois mes mains solidement clouées au bois, à cause de toi qui as péché en tendant la main vers le bois. ~

« Je me suis endormi sur la croix, et la lance a pénétré dans mon côté, à cause de toi qui t'es endormi dans le paradis et, de ton côté, tu as donné naissance à Ève. Mon côté a guéri la douleur de ton côté ; mon sommeil va te tirer du sommeil des enfers. Ma lance a arrêté la lance qui se tournait vers toi.

« Lève-toi, partons d'ici. L'ennemi t'a fait sortir de la terre du paradis ; moi je ne t'installerai plus dans le paradis, mais sur un trône céleste. Je t'ai écarté de l'arbre symbolique de la vie ; mais voici que moi, qui suis la vie, je ne fais qu'un avec toi. J'ai posté les chérubins pour qu'ils te gardent comme un serviteur ; je fais maintenant que les chérubins t'adorent comme un Dieu. ~

« Le trône des chérubins est préparé, les porteurs sont alertés, le lit nuptial est dressé, les aliments sont apprêtés, les tentes et les demeures éternelles le sont aussi. Les trésors du bonheur sont ouverts et le royaume des cieux est prêt de toute éternité. »

I imagine the face of Jesus on the Cross differently than we have become accustomed to. Very often we have a sad or dark face, and from time to time we have the pleasure of having a joyful face that we can see in Xavier's castle, the house where St. Francis Xavier was born, for example. I imagine a victorious face, a face that tells us that I have done everything, everything is accomplished.

A tiring face, certainly YES, but a face of a victorious one that confirms to us, even in his suffering, how much He loves us, the sinners that we are. In this merciful gaze, He begs us to understand the love of His Father, and how much He desires that we be saved, not the humanity of the past, or of the present, but the humanity of history, all of it, for an eternity. What a paradox, death gives us LIFE, 'I am the Way, the Truth and the Life!

Was it my sin that brought him to the Cross? I don't believe so, but all the evil that we do today makes Him suffer, because I didn't understand His love and mercy. He can understand my weakness perfectly, for He already knew in His humanity that I am still weak. That is why He chose Peter as the head of His Church, who was mysteriously absent before His Cross. Even Mary and John were silent, for they did not know what to say or how to act? Accept or revolt? With what means?  God understands our silence and our distance too. All that could be done, was a mere presence, a simple look with compassion and love. Jesus needs this from us, even today, in our own helplessness.

All that matters today is not our guilt of the past, but our dirty silence where we can say something, where we have the power to act. This silence is not acceptable. This distance, becomes cooperative with the criminals. How in my humanity can we accept such behavior? Am I still silent? 

Jesus invites us today to take up our cross, the daily crosses, including our personal, family or social tears.  By carrying our daily cross, we have already on our part lightened the Cross of Christ. Through conversion, through our immersion in divine love, the lost sheep has already returned home and the Lord will seek others.

Today, from now until Saturday evening, we are asked to keep silence, an interior silence, so that we can contemplate this love that God expressed in the Cross. This silence will help us to plunge into our darkness that we do not want to enter. In this silence let us gather, not in sadness, but in hope.  I wish you a very good Pascal Triduum.

J’imagine le visage de Jésus sur la Croix autrement que nous avons habitué. Très souvent nous avons un visage triste ou sombre, et de temps en temps nous avons le plaisir d’avoir un visage joyeux que nous pouvons le voir au château de Xavier, la maison où St. François Xavier naquit, par exemple. J’imagine un visage victorieux, un visage qui nous affirme que j’ai tout fait, tout est accompli.

Un visage fatigant, certainement OUI, mais un visage d’un vainqueur qui nous confirme, même dans sa souffrance, combien Il nous aime, les pécheurs que nous sommes. Dans ce regard plein de miséricorde, Il nous supplie pour que nous comprenions l’amour de son Père et, combien est son désire que nous soyons sauvés, non pas l’humanité du passé, ou du présent, mais l’humanité de l’histoire, toute entière, pour une éternité. Quel paradoxe, la mort nous donne la VIE, ‘Je suis le Chemin, la Vérité et la Vie !

Était-il mon péché qui l’a mené jusqu’à la Croix ? Je ne crois pas, mais tout le mal que le fait aujourd’hui, Lui fait souffrir, parce que je n’ai pas compris son amour et sa miséricorde. Il peut comprendre parfaitement ma faiblesse, car Il savait déjà dans son humanité, que je suis encore faible. C’est pourquoi, Il a choisi Pierre comme chef de son Église, qui était mystérieusement absent devant sa Croix. Même Marie et Jean était silencieux, car ils ne savaient pas quoi dire ou comment agir ? Accepter ou se révolter ? avec quel moyen ?  Dieu comprend notre silence et notre distance aussi.

Tout ce qui important aujourd’hui, non pas notre culpabilité du passé, mais notre silence où nous pouvons dires quelque chose, où nous avons un pouvoir d’agir. Ce silence n’est pas acceptable. Cette distance, devient coopérative avec les malfaiteurs. Comment dans mon humanité peut-on accepter tel comportement ? Suis-je encore silencieux ? 

Jésus nous invite aujourd’hui de prendre notre croix, les croix quotidiennes, y compris nos déchirements personale, familial ou social.  En portant notre croix du chaque jour, nous avons déjà de notre part alléger la Croix du Christ. Par la conversion, par notre plongement dans l’amour divin, la brebis perdue est déjà rentrée chez-elle et Le Seigneur cherchera les autres.

Aujourd’hui, d’ici jusqu’au samedi soir, on est demandé de garder le silence, un silence intérieur, pour qu’on puisse contempler cet amour que Dieu s’exprimait dans la Croix. Ce silence nous aidera à plonger dans nos ténèbres qu’on ne veut pas y entrer. Dans ce silence recueillions-nous, non pas dans la tristesse, mais dans l’espérance.  Je vous souhaite un très bon Triduum Pascal.

(Jn 13,1-15): 

It was before the feast of the Passover. Jesus realized that his hour had come to pass from this world to the Father, and as He had loved those who were his own in the world, He would love them with perfect love. They were at supper and the devil had already put into the mind of Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray. Jesus knew that the Father had entrusted all things to him, and as He had come from God, He was going to God. So He got up from table, removed his garment and taking a towel, wrapped it around his waist. Then He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel He was wearing.

When he came to Simon Peter, Simon said to him, «Why, Lord, you want to wash my feet!». Jesus said, «What I am doing you cannot understand now, but afterwards you will understand it». Peter replied, «You shall never wash my feet». Jesus answered him, «If I do not wash you, you can have no part with me». Then Simon Peter said, «Lord, wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!». Jesus replied, «Whoever has taken a bath does not need to wash (except the feet), for he is clean all over. You are clean, though not all of you». Jesus knew who was to betray him; because of this he said, «Not all of you are clean».

When Jesus had finished washing their feet, He put on his garment again, went back to the table and said to them, «Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Master and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I, then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you also must wash one another's feet. I have just given you an example that as I have done, you also may do».

Happy Feast

Today, exceptionally, I would like to share with you the meaning and importance of the feast of Holy Thursday: The establishment of the Eucharist. The Church lives on the Eucharist, and it is the heart of the mystery of the Church. The Gospel of the day tells us that Jesus "loved them to the end" and the Eucharist is born in this divine love, and the greatest gift that Jesus can offer to his Church, because in the Eucharist He gives Himself and He Himself becomes the Church. That is why it will be for his disciples, and today for us, the source and summit of the whole Christian life. Without the Eucharist, Church cannot exist, because she lives from the Eucharist.

God was not satisfied with the Incarnation. He loved us to the end and wanted to wash the feet of humanity, so that man could understand in its intimacy, the depth of his love, which would later be expressed explicitly on the Cross. When we celebrate the Eucharist, we must never forget that we celebrate it on the altar of the world, and for the world. By taking part in it, we recognize a divine work, yet a purely cosmic one, because God, as Creator, is working a new creation for us. That is why Jesus asked his disciples to make it a memory, a memory for an eternity. Saint John Paul II will tell us, "The Eucharist, Jesus' saving presence in the community of the faithful and spiritual nourishment for it, is the most precious thing the Church can have in her journey through history. "It is not only the Body given and the Blood shed, but 'delivered up for us and shed for the multitude'.

Today, we are invited to receive this gift in faith, for it is the Mystery of the faith that builds each member of his Church. Here we see Jesus, his sacrifice and resurrection. Here we see the worship par excellence and obedience of Christ. We will see clearly the work of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit who sanctifies, Christ who gives himself, and the love of the Father. 

On this day, I invite you to pray for your parish priest, and for all the priests you know. Pray for me too, that I may be a just priest before God, for God and through God.

«If I, then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you also must wash one another's feet»

Today, we remember the first Holy Thursday of history, when Jesus Christ gathers his disciples to celebrate the Passover. It is then He inaugurates the new Passover of the new Covenant when his sacrifice is offered for our salvation.

Along with Eucharist, Christ institutes the ministerial priesthood with which the sacrament of the Eucharist is to be perpetuated. The preface of the Chrism Mass reveals its meaning: «He chooses men to share his sacred ministry by the laying on of hands. He appoints them to renew in his name the sacrifice of our redemption as they set before your family his paschal meal. He calls them to lead your people in love, nourish them by your word, and strengthen them through the sacraments».

And that very same Thursday, Jesus gives us his new commandment of love: «Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another» (Jn 13:34). Before, love was based upon the expected reward in return, or upon the fulfillment of an imposed norm. Now, Christian love is based upon Christ. He loves us to the point of giving his life: this must be the measure of the disciple's love and the signal, the characteristic of Christian recognition.

However, man has no capacity to love like this. It is not simply the fruit of an effort but God's wonderful gift. Fortunately, He is Love and —at the same time— source of love that we receive through the Eucharistic Bread.

Finally, today we should mull over the washing of the feet. With a servant's attitude, Jesus washes the Apostles' feet, and He recommends them to wash one another's feet (cf. Jn 13:14). There is something more than a lesson in humility in the Master's gesture. It is like an anticipation, like a symbol of his Passion, of the total humiliation He has to suffer to save all men.

Theologian Romano Guardini says that «the attitude of our littleness bowing down in front of the great is not yet an attitude of humility. It is simply, an attitude to truth. But when the great bows down before our littleness that is true humility». This is why Jesus Christ is really humble. Before this humble Christ our usual patterns shatter. Jesus Christ turn human values over while inviting us to follow him to build a better and different world based on service.

Avant la fête de la Pâque, sachant que l'heure était venue pour lui de passer de ce monde à son Père, Jésus, ayant aimé les siens qui étaient dans le monde, les aima jusqu'au bout. Au cours du repas, alors que le démon a déjà inspiré à Judas Iscariote, fils de Simon, l'intention de le livrer, Jésus, sachant que le Père a tout remis entre ses mains, qu'il est venu de Dieu et qu'il retourne à Dieu, se lève de table, quitte son vêtement, et prend un linge qu'il se noue à la ceinture; puis il verse de l'eau dans un bassin, il se met à laver les pieds des disciples et à les essuyer avec le linge qu'il avait à la ceinture.

Il arrive ainsi devant Simon-Pierre. Et Pierre lui dit: «Toi, Seigneur, tu veux me laver les pieds!». Jésus lui déclara: «Ce que je veux faire, tu ne le sais pas maintenant; plus tard tu comprendras». Pierre lui dit: «Tu ne me laveras pas les pieds; non, jamais!». Jésus lui répondit: «Si je ne te lave pas, tu n'auras point de part avec moi». Simon-Pierre lui dit: «Alors, Seigneur, pas seulement les pieds, mais aussi les mains et la tête!». Jésus lui dit: «Quand on vient de prendre un bain, on n'a pas besoin de se laver: on est pur tout entier. Vous-mêmes, vous êtes purs, mais non pas tous». Il savait bien qui allait le livrer; et c'est pourquoi il disait: «Vous n'êtes pas tous purs».

Après leur avoir lavé les pieds, il reprit son vêtement et se remit à table. Il leur dit alors: «Comprenez-vous ce que je viens de faire? Vous m'appelez "Maître" et "Seigneur", et vous avez raison, car vraiment je le suis. Si donc moi, le Seigneur et le Maître, je vous ai lavé les pieds, vous aussi vous devez vous laver les pieds les uns aux autres. C'est un exemple que je vous ai donné afin que vous fassiez, vous aussi, comme j'ai fait pour vous».

Une explication

Aujourd’hui exceptionnellement je voudrais partager avec vous le sens et l’importance de la fête de Jeudi Saint : L’établissement de l’Eucharistie. L’Église vit de l’Eucharistie, et elle est le cœur du mystère de l’Église. L’évangile du jour  nous dit Jésus « les aima jusqu'au bout » et l’Eucharistie est né dans cet amour divin, et le plus grand cadeau que Jésus puisse offrir à son Église, car dans l’Eucharistie, Il se donne et Il devient Lui-même l’Église. C’est pourquoi elle sera pour ses disciples, et aujourd’hui, pour nous, la source et somment de toute la vie chrétienne. Sans l’Eucharistie, Église ne peut pas exister, car elle vit de l’Eucharistie.

Dieu ne se contentait pas que l’Incarnation. Il nous a aimé jusqu’au bout et voulu laver les pieds de l’humanité, pour qu’elle comprenne dans son intimité, la profondeur de son amour, qui s’exprimera plus tard explicitement sur la Croix. Lorsque nous célébrons l’Eucharistie, il ne faut jamais oublier que nous la célébrons sur l’autel du monde, et pour le monde. En y participant, nous reconnaissons, une œuvre divine, pourtant purement cosmique, car Dieu agit, en tant que Créateur, une nouvelle création pour nous. C’est pourquoi Jésus a demandé à ses disciples de le faire mémoire, mémoire pour une éternité. Saint Jean Paul II nous dira, « L’Eucharistie, présence salvifique de Jésus dans la communauté des fidèles et nourriture spirituelle pour elle, est ce que l’Église peut avoir de plus précieux dans sa marche au long de l’histoire. »  Ce n’est pas seulement le Corps donné et le Sang versé, mais ‘livré pour nous et répondu pour la multitude.’

Aujourd’hui, nous sommes invités à recevoir ce cadeau en foi, car il est le Mystère de la foi qui construit chaque membre de son Église. C’est ici nous voyons Jésus, son sacrifice et sa résurrection. Ici même nous verrons l’adoration par excellence et l’obéissance du Christ. Nous verrons clairement l’œuvre Trinitaire, le Saint Esprit qui sanctifie, le Christ qui se donne, et l’amour du Père.  

En ce jour, je vous invite à prier pour votre curé, et pour tous les prêtres que vous connaissez. Priez pour moi aussi, pour que je sois un prêtre juste devant Dieu, pour Dieu et par Dieu.

Aujourd'hui nous commémorons le premier Jeudi-Saint de l'histoire, quand Jésus Christ se réunit avec ses disciples pour célébrer la Pâque. Il inaugure alors la nouvelle Pâque de la nouvelle Alliance, où Il se livre en sacrifice pour notre salut.

À la Sainte Cène, en même temps que l'Eucharistie, le Christ a institué le Sacerdoce Ministériel. Par son intermédiaire, le Sacrement de l'Eucharistie pourra se perpétuer. La préface de la Messe Chrismale nous en révèle le sens: «Tu choisis quelques frères pour les faire participer au ministère de son sacerdoce; pour qu'en son nom ils offrent le sacrifice rédempteur, qu'ils nourrissent ton peuple de la Parole et qu'ils les fassent vivre de tes sacrements».

Et ce Jeudi même, Jésus nous donne le commandement de l'amour: «Comme je vous ai aimés, vous aussi aimez-vous les uns les autres» (Jn 13,34). L'amour était jadis fondé sur la récompense attendue en échange, ou sur l'accomplissement d'une norme imposée au préalable. Maintenant, l'amour chrétien est fondé sur le Christ. Il nous aime jusqu'à donner sa vie: telle doit être la mesure de l'amour du disciple pour le Maître et tel doit être aussi le signe, la caractéristique de la reconnaissance chrétienne.

Mais l'homme n'est pas capable d'aimer ainsi. Il ne s'agit simplement du fruit de son effort, mais d'un don de Dieu. Heureusement, Dieu est Amour et —en même temps— source d'amour, qui nous est livrée avec le Pain Eucharistique.

Enfin, aujourd'hui nous contemplons le lavement des pieds. Jésus prit l'attitude du serviteur et lava les pieds des Apôtres, en leur recommandant de le faire les uns aux autres (cf. Jn 13,14). Dans ce geste du Maître, Il y a quelque chose en plus qu'une leçon d'humilité. C'est comme l'anticipation, comme le symbole de la Passion, de l'humiliation totale que Jésus doit souffrir pour le salut de tous les hommes.

Le théologien Romano Guardini dit que «l'attitude du petit qui se prosterne devant le grand, n'est pas exactement humilité. C'est, tout simplement, la vérité. Qui est vraiment humble est le grand qui s'humilie devant le petit». C'est pour ça que Jésus Christ est vraiment humble. Devant ce Christ humble les schémas traditionnels sont brisés. Jésus Christ renverse les valeurs purement humaines et nous invite à le suivre pour construire un monde nouveau et différent, fondé sur le service.

(Mt 26,14-25): 

One of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went off to the chief priests and said, «How much will you give me if I hand him over to you?». They promised to give him thirty pieces of silver, and from then on he kept looking for the best way to hand him over to them.

On the first day of the Festival of the Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and said to him, «Where do you want us to prepare the Passover meal for you?». Jesus answered, «Go into the city, to the house of a certain man, and tell him: ‘The Master says: My hour is near, and I will celebrate the Passover with my disciples in your house’». The disciples did as Jesus had ordered and prepared the Passover meal.

When it was evening, Jesus sat at table with the Twelve. While they were eating, Jesus said, «Truly, I say to you: one of you will betray me». They were deeply distressed and asked him in turn, «You do not mean me, do you, Lord?». He answered, «he who will betray me is one of those who dips his bread in the dish with me. The Son of Man is going as the Scriptures say He will. But alas for that one who betrays the Son of Man; better for him not to have been born». Judas, who was betraying him, also asked, «You do not mean me, Master, do you?». Jesus replied, «You have said it».

The Application

Very often we are failed by our own, particularly our dear ones. What a pain to live with such a situation. The man who is to betray Jesus, is invited by Jesus to come and dine with   Him.  God continuously give us the opportunity to get converted. It is here we find our hope.

The only way to survive in such situation is to listen to the Lord and He will teach us to make use of such events into our own advantage, to grow stronger in our personal and social life. Great prophets have lived and experienced such events and have become saviors to others.

What is quite interesting in our faith, it is the same painful moment have created the richest and precious gift that the Church hold on today, the Eucharist. Tomorrow, we will celebrate the Maundy Thursday, the feast of ordained ministers. We will postpone to cherish such event tomorrow. Have a wonderful day.

Action of the day: Be courageous.

The power of greed can only be overcome with the power of Christ's love poured out for us

Origen (185-254 AD),

"Let us consider what Judas said to the Jewish priests: What will you give me if I hand him over to you? He was willing to take money in exchange for handing over the Word of God. They do the same thing who accept sensual or worldly goods in exchange for handing over and casting out from their souls the Savior and Word of truth who came to dwell with them. Indeed, it would be fitting to apply Judas's example to all who show contempt for the Word of God and betray him, as it were, by committing sin for the sake of money or for any selfish motive. People who behave in this way appear openly to be calling out to the powers of the enemy who offer worldly gain in return for the sin of betraying God's Word, saying, What will you give me if I hand him over to you? And they gave him thirty pieces of silver.

The number of coins they gave Judas was equivalent to the number of years the Savior had sojourned in this world. For at the age of thirty, he was baptized and began to preach the gospel, like Joseph was thirty years old when he began to gather grain for his brothers (Genesis 41:46). Just as at that time the grain was prepared by God for the sons of Israel but given also to the Egyptians, so also the gospel was prepared for the saints but preached also to the unfaithful and wicked." (Commentary on Matthew 78.)
