Gospel text

(Mt 20,20-28):

The mother of James and John came to Jesus with her sons, and she knelt down to ask a favor. Jesus said to her, «What do you want?». And she answered, «Here you have my two sons. Grant that they may sit, one at your right and one at your left, when you are in your kingdom». Jesus said to the brothers, «You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am about to drink?». They answered, «We can». Jesus replied, «You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right or at my left is not for me to grant. That will be for those for whom the Father has prepared it».

The other ten heard all this and were angry with the two brothers. Then Jesus called them to him and said, «You know that the rulers of the nations act as tyrants, and the powerful oppress them. It shall not be so among you; whoever wants to be more important in your group shall make himself your servant. And if you want to be first, make yourself the servant of all. Be like the Son of Man who has come, not to be served but to serve and to give his life to redeem many».

The Application

Till today we haven’t understood the meaning of the Kingdom of God, as already and not yet.

The desire of the mother is also ours. We wish to climb high as possible and get the best out of everything.

However, Service is the way that Jesus is proposing to the disciples as the model to reach here. By consequence, humility is expected from every disciples of the Lord. We can’t be just like any other being. We are different and called to show this new way of service and humility of the Lord to the world.

Action for the Day: Service and humility

«Can you drink the cup that I am about to drink?»

Mons. Octavio RUIZ Arenas

Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelization

Today’s fragment of the Gospel narrates an episode that places us in front of a situation which is not unusual in the various Christian communities. Indeed, John and James have been very generous leaving behind their households and their nets to follow Jesus the Christ. They have heard the Lord announce a Kingdom and offer eternal life but they still fail to understand the new dimension the Lord puts forward to them. It is because of this that their mother is going to ask for something which is good enough, but which doesn’t go beyond a simple human ambition: «Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom» (Mt 20,21).

Similarly, we listen to the Lord and follow Him, like the first disciples, but not always do we fully understand his message; we then sometimes follow our personal interests and ambitions within the Church. We forget that when we accept the Lord we have to give ourselves wholly and with full trust in Him; that we cannot think in obtaining the glory without having accepted the cross.

The answer Jesus gives them puts the stress precisely on this aspect: in order to have a share in his Kingdom what matters is to drink from his same «cup» (see Mt 20, 22), i.e. to be ready and willing to give our own life for the love of God and dedicate ourselves to the service of our brethren with the same merciful attitude that Jesus showed. In his first homily Pope Francis emphasized that in order to follow Jesus we have to carry our cross, because «when we make our way without the cross, when we confess a Christ without his cross, we are not disciples of the Lord».

As a consequence, following Christ demands from us great humility. From the minute of our Baptism we have been called to be his witnesses in order to transform the world. But this transformation will only be achieved if we are able to be servants of our brethren, with a spirit of great generosity and self-giving, but always joyful because we are following and making the Lord present.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 20,20-28):

Gospel text

(Mt 13,1-9):

Jesus left the house and sat down by the lakeside. As many people gathered around him, He got in a boat. There He sat while the whole crowd stood on the shore, and he spoke to them in parables about many things. Jesus said, «The sower went out to sow and, as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground where there was little soil, and the seeds sprouted quickly because the soil was not deep. But as soon the sun rose the plants were scorched and withered because they had no roots. Again other seeds fell among thistles; and the thistles grew and choked the plants. Still other seeds fell on good soil and produced a crop; some produced a hundredfold, others sixty and others thirty. If you have ears, then hear!».

The Application

God is always generous, even if we complain without any reason. All that He desires is that we remain faith to the divine gifts we have received. To accomplish this divine will, sometime, even our unmerited demands are met.

Today Jesus is reminds us of this generous giver, who continues to sow good seeds in our hearts. Since we have different temperament in different time and moments of life, I believe all these different terrains represents our different moments of life. God wishes that we remain always the same, temperament which is reasonable and justifiable, so that we may always produce good fruit.

We know that we are not bad, but the question is, that we not good at all time. It is here Jesus wishes that we remain always good, a good terrain which produces fruit. Jesus gives us this opportunity of conversion always. The more we remain ready, the more we will produce good fruit. Are we not called to be ready all time?

To act: Be humble today and observe the way God is speaking to you.

«The sower went out to sow and, as he sowed»

Fr. Julio César RAMOS González SDB
(Mendoza, Argentina)

Today, Jesus —in Matthew's Gospel— starts introducing us into the mysteries of the Kingdom, in that particular way that He likes to use by means of parables.

The seeds are the Word proclaimed and the sower is He. He is not trying to sow in the best possible soil to produce an excellent crop. He has come so that «they may have life, and have it to the full» (Jn 10:10). This is why He does not spare his seeds and generously throws handfuls of them onto the ground, whether it is «along the path» (Mt 13:4), or «on rocky ground» (key verse 5), or «among thistles» (key verse 7), or, finally, «on good soil» (key verse 8).

Thus, the seeds so generously sown produce the expected yield the “toponymic” possibilities allow. The Second Vatican Council tells us: «The word of the Lord is compared to a seed which is sown in a field; those who hear it with faith and are numbered among the little flock of Christ have truly received the Kingdom. Then, by its own power the seed sprouts and grows until the harvest» (Lumen gentium, n. 5).

«Those who hear it with faith», says the Council. You are used to hear it, perhaps to read it and, maybe, to ponder over. Depending on the depth of your faith through hearing, such will be the fruits the crop will bear. Though, these fruits, somehow, are guaranteed by the vital power of the Word-seed, our responsibility in the attentive listening to the Word is no less important. This is why «If you have ears, then hear!» (Mt 13:9).

Today, ask the Lord the prophet’s yearning: «When I found your words, I devoured them; they became my joy and the happiness of my heart, Because I bore your name, O Lord, God of hosts» (Jer 15,16).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 13,1-9):

Gospel text

(Mt 12,46-50):

While Jesus was still talking to the people, his mother and his brothers wanted to speak to him and they waited outside. So someone said to him, «Your mother and your brothers are just outside; they want to speak with you». Jesus answered, «Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?». Then He pointed to his disciples and said, «Look! Here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is for me brother, sister, or mother».

The Application

How to know the divine will? It is by reading the Bible, listening to our brothers and sisters and watching the creation. God has his own way of addressing to us and we can never master it. It is the time and the space which will help us, very often in later days, to understand the divine will. To simplify our research of divine will, let us look at the personal life of saints and our salvation history. They do narrate us how God spoke to the people in the history and the way people responded to the divine will. The best person to look for is Jesus Himself.

In the salvation history we discover that God continues to accompany us, particularly in our difficult time. Sometime He carries us, but we realise it very late. Not to repeat the mistake of our early generations, Jesus is inviting us to become members of His Family, which is narrowly related to the Father. Knowing the Father, loving Him and doing exactly what He desires, will be the way of our own happiness.

Do we really feel that we are member of the family of Jesus? Am I capable of associating myself to Mary in doing the divine will?

Act of the day: try to do an act of charity, which will please the Lord. Make this prayer, ‘Lord speak, thy servant listens’.

«Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is for me (...) mother»

Fr. Pere SUÑER i Puig SJ
(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, to start with, the Gospel surprises us: «Who is my mother? (Mt 12:48), wonders Jesus. It would seem the Lord is showing a contemptuous attitude towards Mary, his mother. Nothing of the sort! What Jesus wants to make quite clear is that, in his own eyes —God's eyes— the crucial value of a person does not lie on flesh and blood facts, but on the spiritual disposition to accept God's will: «Then He pointed to his disciples and said, ‘Look! Here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is for me brother, sister, or mother’» (Mt 12:49-50). At that time, God's will was for Jesus to evangelize those who were listening and for these ones to actually listen to him. This was a priority over any other value, no matter how dear. To abide by his Father's will, Jesus Christ had left Mary and now He was preaching far away from home.

But, who was ever more willing to abide by God's will than Mary? «‘I am the Lord's servant’, Mary answered. ‘May it be to me as you have said’» (Lk 1:38). This is why, St. Augustine says that Mary, first accepted God's word with a spirit of obedience and, only afterwards, she conceived it in her womb for the Incarnation.

In other words: God loves us as per our saintliness. The Virgin Mary is the most blessed, and, therefore, the most loved. However, God does not love us because we may be saints. It is rather the other way round: we are saints because He loves us. The first one to love is always our Lord (cf. 1Jn 4:10). Mary proves it when she says: «For He has looked upon his handmaid's lowliness» (Lk 1:48). In God's eyes our own lowliness is evident; but He wants to magnify us, to sanctify us.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 12,46-50):

Abbé Pere SUÑER i Puig SJ
(Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Jn 20,1-2.11-18):

Now, on the first day after the Sabbath, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark and she saw that the stone blocking the tomb had been moved away. She ran to Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved. And she said to them, «They have taken the Lord out of the tomb and we don't know where they have laid him».

Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she bent down to look inside; she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had been, one at the head, and the other at the feet. They said, «Woman, why are you weeping?». She answered, «Because they have taken my Lord and I don't know where they have put him». As she said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not recognize him. Jesus said to her, «Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?». She thought it was the gardener and answered him, «Lord, if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and remove him». Jesus said to her, «Mary». She turned and said to him, «Rabboni» —which means, Master. Jesus said to her, «Do not cling to me; you see I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them: ‘I am ascending to my Father, who is your Father, to my God, who is your God’. So Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, «I have seen the Lord, and this is what he said to me».

The Application

An act of love demonstrates the depth of the relationship that Mary had with the Lord. No one dared such act (not even the disciple who loved Jesus), which is purely human, but transformed into an act apostolic and divine.

Her journey started with simple admiration and gratitude turns into deep love and appreciation.  Saint Gregory the great will interpret this encounter by telling, who is searched, is the same one who has inspired Mary to come here. Thus every act that we consciously take, there is a divine will and as Christians, we should always keep this in mind, particularly in our discernment. It is in this consciousness of divine presence in our being, that we are called to think and act.

It is quite possible that in our discernment, we might make mistakes and sometime blunders, just like Mary who identified Jesus as gardener. Even in our mistakes and blunders, Jesus intervenes personally and transform, where our blunders become an occasion of grace. From an ordinary woman, Jesus has elevated her to be the apostle of the Apostles, by making her, as the first person to announce the good news of the Resurrection.

If we look back into the life of Mary, we will find out without any mistake, a deep love and a mutual love. It is in such love that God desires to work. We have to ask ourselves, do we have such deep love for the Lord? If yes, what have we done for this love?

«Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’»

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench
(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we celebrate with joy Saint Mary Magdalene. With joy and benefit for our faith!, because her trail could very well be ours. Magdalene came from afar (cf. Luke 7: 36-50) and she did go very far... Indeed, at the dawn of the Resurrection, Mary looked for Jesus, found the risen Jesus and met Jesus’ Father, "Our Father". That morning, Jesus Christ discovered her the most important fact of our faith: that she was also God’s daughter.

In Mary of Magdala’s itinerary, we discover some important aspects of our faith. In the first place, we admire her courage. Though a gift from God, faith requires courage from the believer. Generally, we tend towards what we can see, what can be seized with our hand. God being essentially invisible, faith “represents the risky enterprise of accepting what plainly cannot be seen as the truly real and fundamental. It involves a leap out of the tangible world” (Benedict XVI). Mary, by seeing the risen Christ can also "see" the Father, the Lord.

On the other hand, the "leap to faith" «is reached through what the Bible calls conversion or repentance: only he who changes receives it "(Benedict XVI). Was not this Mary’s first step? Should not this also be a reiterated step in our lives?

In the conversion of Magdalene, there was much love: she did not spare any perfumes for her Love. Love!: here is another "vehicle" of faith, because we neither hear, nor see or believe whom we do not love. In John’s Gospel it clearly appears «believing is to listen and, at the same time, to see (...)». In that dawn, María Magdalena takes risks for her Love, she listens to her Love (to hear Him saying "Mary" is enough for her to recognize Him) and she meets the Father. «On the morning of Easter (...), María Magdalena, is asked to contemplate Him as He ascends to the Father, and finally to her full confession "I have seen the Lord" (Jn 20:18)» (Pope Francis).

Abbé Antoni CAROL i Hostench

Lord, do you not care? "Martha, Martha, you worry and you get agitated for a lot of things. Only one is necessary. To hear the Word of God and put it into practice. The Lord does care and worry about Martha, who is busy doing good things, but totally disconnected to the divine will. Each and every one of us is important for the Lord. It is sad that some of us give more importance in action, executing wonderful charitable activities, without getting inspired in our contemplation. Jesus earnestly wishes that we consult Him first before choosing an activity, even if it’s a very holy and sacred one.

To do this, we need inner peace and a genuine desire to be with the Lord. Everything begins with this inner silence, which help us to have a simple and divine look that terminates with an attentive listening, which leads us into concrete actions, approved by the Lord.

It is in this inner silence that Abraham recognized the presence of the Lord in front of his tent. Certainly the worries of life, like an unbearable heat have played their part.  Abraham was pushed to come out and will never regret this coming out of oneself, one’s own land of security. Without knowing the events that await him, Abraham believed all that the Lord announced to him.

Just like in the Old Testament, Jesus is coming in search of us. Longing eagerly to be with us and listen to us. He wishes to offer many good tidings, just like that which was offered to Abraham. In this Sunday we are once again invited with Martha and Mary to discover this Lord who is generous and to do all that is necessary to identify His presence and profit the grace which He desires for us. He is with us and among us. Saint Paul tells us that this mystery of his closeness is revealed in Jesus. Even the suffering that we undertake due to the accomplishment of divine will, will turn into a joy. With the Lord everything is pleasant.  Looking at his humanity we are invited to discover his divinity. By imitating his humanity, it is possible to live His divinity in our own humanity.

As Christians, we can live our baptism and this mystery of the divine presence in two ways; active, doing good that is visible to others and contemplative, living with the Lord, which is visible only to the Lord. The acts we do must born of our contemplation, from what we have learned from the Lord. Because the life and strength of every Christian can remain firm and grow if they remain united to the true Vine, from which come life, love and the desire to go on without looking back.

The most important thing is not what we do or can do, but the acts be inspired by the Lord. May the Lord abide in these acts and be glorified. It is in His glory that man will find the perfect fulfilment of his own will which is divine. Thus in every act which is divine in our humanity,  we all become, the good Samaritans, to all our brothers and sisters, in the image of our Master.

Jesus invites us to discern, discern everything in all sincerity, our own priorities of life. It is not good to eat the starter without being able to taste the main course. The rites or liturgies we celebrate, including the Eucharist, must bring us to the Lord and foster the divine encounter that Jesus desires. A contemplation without action and an action disconnected from contemplation, cannot fulfil the divine will. Jesus needs Martha to fulfil all that Mary listened to.

Let us prepare our heart to welcome the Lord and His Word as Mary. Let us learn to choose, in our discernment process, the best part that no one can take away. Configured in the divine love, let us fulfil all this Word that the Lord has entrusted to us. Amen.

Amen.
