Gospel text

(Jn 8,31-42):

Jesus went on to say to the Jews who believed in him: «You will be my true disciples if you keep my word. Then you will know the truth and the truth will make you free». They answered him, «We are the descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves of anyone. What do you mean by saying: ‘You will be free?’». Jesus answered them, «Truly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave. But the slave doesn't stay in the house forever; the son stays forever. So, if the Son makes you free, you will be really free. I know that you are the descendants of Abraham; yet you want to kill me because my word finds no place in you. For my part I speak of what I have seen in the Father's presence, but you do what you have learned from your father».

They answered him, «Our father is Abraham». Then Jesus said, «If you were Abraham's children, you would do as Abraham did. But now you want to kill me, the one who tells you the truth —the truth that I have learned from God. That is not what Abraham did; what you are doing are the works of your father». The Jews said to him, «We are not illegitimate children; we have one Father, God». Jesus replied, «If God were your Father you would love me, for I came forth from God, and I am here. And I didn't come by my own decision, but it was he himself who sent me».

The Application

It is not what we say and what we do is important before God, but what we are. People think that the acts reveal what we are. Though it is true, it is not always a total truth, because I can do a good act with a bad intention, or with an impure intention. Today Jesus clarifies the notion of ‘freedom’ and the notion of ‘children’ of Abraham.

Freedom comes from God and a man of freedom will with pleasure surrender his freedom before God, in his own liberty. This surrendering is possible, only if we know the truth, the truth of our identity, the identity as children of God. Jesus is reminding us that we have our origin in God and asks us to act accordingly.

It is in this pure act of love and compassion that others will identify through us, the true divine presence in this world. These pure acts give a living witness of God’s love. Jesus came to show us through His death and resurrection, how to possess and live this divine love and compassion, expressed in forgiveness and reconciliation. If we recognise our divine identity and live it to its fullness, then we can rightly say that we are children of God. The question is, whether God is our Father? Do our works give witness that we are His children?

Today, the Lord directs harsh words to the Jews. Not to some Jews, but precisely to those who embraced the faith: Jesus said «to the Jews who had believed him» (Jn 8:31). This dialogue of Jesus reflects, without any doubt, the beginning of those difficulties caused by the Jewish Christians in the first hours of the Church.

As they were descendants of Abraham according to their kinship, such Jesus’ disciples considered themselves superior not only to Gentiles who lived away from the faith, but also better than any non-Jewish disciples of the same faith. They said: «We are Abraham’s descendants» (Jn 8:33); «Abraham is our father» (v.39); «The only Father we have is God himself.”» (v.41)

Despite being disciples of Jesus, we have the impression that Jesus meant nothing for them, nothing that could improve whom they already owned. But it is there where they all made a big mistake. True sons are not those by physical descent but the heirs of the promise, that is, those who believe (cf. Rom 9:6-8). Without faith in Jesus it is not possible for anyone to reach Abraham’s promise. That being so, among the disciples, "there is neither Jews nor Greeks; neither slave nor free; nor is there man and woman", for they are all brothers because of Baptism (cf. Gal 3:27-28). Let us not be seduced by spiritual pride. Jewish considered themselves superior to other Christians. It is not necessary to speak, here, of separated brethren. But let us rather think of us. How often some Catholics consider themselves better than other Catholics just because they follow this or that movement, or because they observe this or that discipline, they abide by this or to that liturgical trend. Some, because they are rich; others, because they studied more. Some, because they hold important positions; others, because they come from noble families. «« I would like that each one should feel the joy of being Christian.... «God guides his Church, He sustains it always, especially at times of difficulty» (Benedict XVI).

Today, when we are only a few days from the Holy Week, our Lord is asking us to fight to live some very specific things, small, but at times, not very easy. We shall explain them throughout this commentary: basically, it is a matter of persisting with his word. How important it is to always refer our life to the Gospel! Let's ask us: What would Jesus do in this situation I have to face now? How would He treat this person which I find so specially difficult to treat? Which would be his reaction before this circumstance? A Christian must be —according to Saint Paul— “another Christ”: «I no longer live, but Christ lives in me» (Gal 2:20). How is it, our Lord's reflection, on our daily life? Am I his mirror?

Our Lord assures us that, if we persist in his word, we shall know the truth, and the truth will make us free (cf. Jn 8:32). To be truthful is not always easy. How often do we tell small lies, how often do we pretend, how often do “we act dumb”? We cannot deceive God. He sees us, He contemplates us. He loves us and follows us, in our day-to-day routine. The eight Commandment teaches us not to bear false witness nor not to tell lies, no matter how small, even if they look trivial to us. “White lies” are not permitted either. Jesus Christ tells us in another moment: «Let your statement be, `Yes, yes' or `No, no’» (Mt 5:37). That trend to do good, which is freedom, is very much related to truth. Sometimes, we are not free enough because there is a double bottom in our life, we are not clear. We must be convincing! The sin of lie enslaves us.

Our Lord says «If God were your Father you would love me» (Jn 8:42). How can we make it come true our daily desire to get to know the Master? With what kind of devotion do we read the Gospel, even though we may have little time at our disposal? Which sediment will it leave in my life, in my day? When looking at me can it be said, that I read Christ's life?

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 8,31-42):

Gospel text

(Jn 8,21-30):

Jesus said to the Pharisees, «I am going away, and though you look for me, you will die in your sin. Where I am going you cannot come». The Jews wondered, «Why does he say that we can't come where he is going? Will he kill himself?». But Jesus said, «You are from below and I am from above; you are of this world and I am not of this world. That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. And you shall die in your sins unless you believe that I am He».

They asked him, «Who are you?»; and Jesus said, «Just what I have told you from the beginning. I have much to say about you and much to condemn; but the One who sent me is truthful and everything I learned from him, I proclaim to the world». They didn't understand that Jesus was speaking to them about the Father. So Jesus said, «When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He and that I do nothing of myself, but I say just what the Father taught me. He who sent me is with me and has not left me alone; because I always do what pleases him».
As Jesus spoke like this, many believed in him.

"God the Father said: 'I sent you One who would seek you out, walk with you, and forgive you. So he had feet to walk with and hands to forgive with. Thus, when he ascended after his resurrection, he showed hands, side, and feet: hands with which he gave pardon to sinners; and side from which flowed the ransom of the redeemed.'" (excerpt from Sermon 16A,10)

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 8,21-30):

Gospel text

(Jn 8,12-20):

Jesus said to the Jews, «I am the Light of the world; the one who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have light and life». The Pharisees replied, «Now you are speaking on your own be-half, your testimony is worthless». Then Jesus said, «Even though I bear witness to myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I have come from and where I am going. But you do not know where I came from or where I am going. You judge by human standards; as for me, I don't judge anyone. But if I had to judge, my judgment would be valid for I am not alone: the Father who sent me is with me. In your Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is valid; so I am bearing witness to myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness to me».

They asked him, «Where is your Father?». Jesus answered, «You don't know me or my Father; if you knew me, you would know my Father as well». Jesus said these things when he was teaching in the Temple area, in the place where they received the offerings. No one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

A Daily Quote for Lent:

Walking in the Light of Life,

by Augustine of Hippo, 354-430 A.D.

[That unfailing Light] has taken you from the eyes of the flesh and brought you back again to the eyes of the heart! He does not think it enough to say... "shall have light" but adds "of life," even as in the psalm it was said, "[In your light shall we see light]; for with you is the fountain of life" (Psalm 36:9). See how the words of our Lord agree with the truth of that psalm where light is placed with the fountain of life and now here he speaks of the "light of life." For bodily uses, light is one thing and a well another. Our mouths seek a fountain; our eyes seek the light. When we thirst, we seek a fountain; when we are in darkness we seek light. And if we happen to get thirsty in the night, we kindle a light to come to a fountain. With God the light and the well are the same. The one who shines on you so that you may see him is the same one who flows to you so that you may drink him.
You see then what kind of light this is if you see inwardly the light of which he says, "He that follows me shall not walk in darkness." Follow the sun, and let us see if you will not walk in darkness. When the sun rises, it comes toward you and heads on to the west. But perhaps your journey is toward the east. So if you follow the sun, then you will certainly err and instead of going east you will go west, whether by land... or by sea. Finally, you decide that you should follow the sun, and you travel to the west, where it also travels. Let us see if, after it sets, you will not still walk in darkness. See how, though you are unwilling to desert it, yet it will desert you in order to finish out its service for the day. But our Lord Jesus Christ, even when he was not made known to all through the cloud of his flesh, still held all things by the power of his wisdom. Your God is everywhere entirely. If you do not fall away from him, he will never fall away from you.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 8,12-20):

Abbé Jordi PASCUAL i Bancells
(Salt, Girona, Espagne)

God makes us to born and help us to reborn, when we fail to live up to our own dignity, as the children of God. The story of the people of God reveals the economy of salvation, the plan of incarnation of God on earth. We know that this plan of salvation is marked by an act of extreme violence, with the death on the cross of Jesus. This death on the cross and its resurrection constitute the foundation of the Christian faith. The economy of salvation thus remains sealed by this experience of violence and of peace that the resurrection brings us.

The encounter of this woman and the crowd together with the Lord shows us a concrete act of the economy of salvation, and helps us to understand, how God saves us. We heard it in the first reading "Do not remember past events, do not think about things of old." Here I am doing something new; it is already germinating, do not you see it? Saint Paul bears witness to this. The meeting of Saul the soldier with the Lord gave birth to Paul the apostle of the Lord. A totally transformed man will give his life to the announcement of the Good News. In Jesus he discovered a new life, a totally free life.

If we want to be reborn like Paul, we must look at Jesus and his behavior and imitate the behavior of this woman of the gospel of the day. Everyone is looking for a concrete answer from the Lord's mouth. Jesus in front of a totally agitated people, kept a silence, a great mysterious silence. This silence speaks to us, louder than speech. Jesus, who is good, gives a wise counsel to his people who have already judged this woman: "He who is without sin, let him be the first to throw stones at her. The silence of the Lord has given rise to a saving silence. This silence helps us to discover ourselves and which will lead us to conversion. It is in this inner silence that has emptied the anger and the aggressive action that Jesus wish to fill with His mercy and forgiveness.

Let's look at the woman, alone before the Lord, fully inhabited by this contemplative silence. She is no longer the same as that brought by the scribes and Pharisees, filled with fear and shame. She is a new creature, stands before the Lord of mercy, to be liberated by the Lord. She did not leave and she stays with the Lord for the just judgment. Like the Father who has welcomed his prodigal son, the Lord sees nothing in her that deserves a condemnation. A total reconversion deserves a perfect absolution. Forgiveness is offered free of charge to all who ask for it. For that, one must stay with the Lord, before His presence,  to listen to Him. And he will say to us, "Go, and henceforth do not sin again. "

It is desirable that once the forgiveness received, we continue our life in the Lord, following the commandment of love and sharing. We must stay awake, nurture our soul and nourish our faith regularly. Thus, we can like this woman, totally be liberated, we can go home, filled with mercy and love.

Today, I would put myself in the silent crowd listening to the Lord and remain with the Lord in contemplation and prayer. I need to listen to him, to be with him and feel his presence. How much I would like to hear this Word of the Lord, "Me neither, I do not condemn you. Go and sin no more. Lord, my liberator, come to save me, and I will sing, the Lord has done wonders: here I am in joy. Amen.

Amen.

Gospel text

(Jn 7,40-53):

Many who had been listening to the words of Jesus began to say, «This is the Prophet». Others said, «This is the Christ». But some wondered, «Would the Christ come from Galilee? Doesn't Scripture say that the Christ is a descendant of David and from Bethlehem, the city of David?».

The crowd was divided over him. Some wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. The officers of the Temple went back to the chief priests who asked them, «Why didn't you bring him?». The officers answered, «No one ever spoke like this man». The Pharisees then said, «So you, too, have been led astray! Have any of the rulers or any of the Pharisees believed in him? Only these cursed people, who have no knowledge of the Law!».

Yet one of them, Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier, spoke out, «Does our law condemn people without first hearing them and knowing the facts?». They replied, «Do you, too, come from Galilee? Look it up and see for yourself that no prophet is to come from Galilee». And they all went home.

The Application

When we are confused and disturbed, the common wisdom will demand us to come out, out from our self and home, and search for the truth. “And they all went home” with confused state. As Christians, we are called to go back to the Father’s home ‘I will get up and go back to my Father’s home’.

The best way to do is fall back to the gospel values and listen to the Lord, not only in the Holy Scriptures, but also in the events happening around us.  God continues to work and only a person faith can read these divine interventions in our personal life.

Nicodemus, went while it was dark, and today he is an enlightened person, who awakens the intelligence of his contemporaries. Such people do exist in our society. We should have the humility to listen to them, because God speaks to us in the purity of heart.

Today, the Gospel presents the different reactions which the words of our Lord produced. John's text does not offer us any word from the Master, but it does mention the consequences of what He said. Some thought He was a prophet; others said «This is the Christ» (Jn 7:41).

Jesus Christ is truly a “sign that will be contradicted” as Simon had told Mary (cf. Lk 2:34). Those who listened to Jesus' words did not remain indifferent to them, to the point that, on this occasion, as in many others, «the crowd was divided over Him» (Jn 7:43). The reply of the officers who wanted to arrest the Lord centers the question and shows us the power of Christ's words: «No one ever spoke like this man» (Jn 7:46). It is like saying: His words are different; they are not empty boastful words, full of arrogance and falseness. He is “the Truth” and his way of speaking reflects this reality.

And if this happened amid his audience, his deeds provoked even more amazement and admiration; but also, criticism, gossip, hate... Jesus Christ spoke “the language of charity”: his deeds and his words showed the deep love He felt towards all men, especially those more in need of assistance.

Today as then, we Christians are —must be— “a sign of contradiction”, because we do not speak and behave like others do. By imitating and following Jesus Christ, we likewise must use “the language of charity and love”, a necessary language that, in fact, we can all understand. As the Holy Father, our Pope Benedict XVI, wrote in his encyclical Deus caritas est, «Love —caritas— will always prove necessary, even in the most just society (...). Whoever wants to eliminate love is preparing to eliminate man as such».

Today, we can feel how, a few days before His Passion in Jerusalem, the atmosphere around our Lord becomes “strained”. Because of him a kind of controversial argument begins. It could not be otherwise: «Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, but rather division» (Lk 12:51).

And it does not mean our Redeemer likes controversy and division, but rather that, before God, “half-baked ideas” are no good: «He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me, scatters» (Lk 11:23). It is inevitable! Before him one cannot take a neutral stand: either He exists or He does not exist; either He is my Lord, or He is not my Lord. «No one can serve two masters» (Mt 6:24).

John Paul II considered that before God one must choose. The simple faith our good God requests from us implies an option. We have to choose because He does not want to impose upon us: He came to Earth in a discreet manner; He died stunned, without making any ostentation of his divinity (Phil 2:6). This is what so wonderfully expresses Saint Thomas Aquinas in his Adoro Te devote: «On the cross was veiled Thy Godhead's splendor; but here (in the Eucharist) Thy manhood lies hidden too».

We have go to choose! God does not impose upon us; He offers himself to us. And it is up to us to decide for him or not. It is a personal matter each one —with the help of the Holy Spirit— has to solve by himself. Miracles are useless, if man's dispositions are not humility and simplicity. We can see the Jews divided before the same facts. And, this is because in love matters it is not possible to give a half-hearted, half way reply: Christian vocation implies radical response, so radical as the testimony of submission and obedience Christ gave in the Cross.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 7,40-53):
