(Mt 8,23-27): 

Comme Jésus montait dans la barque, ses disciples le suivirent. Et voilà que la mer s'agita violemment, au point que la barque était recouverte par les vagues. Mais lui dormait. Ses compagnons s'approchèrent et le réveillèrent en disant: «Seigneur, sauve-nous! Nous sommes perdus». Mais il leur dit: «Pourquoi avoir peur, hommes de peu de foi?». Alors, debout, Jésus interpella vivement les vents et la mer, et il se fit un grand calme. Les gens furent saisis d'étonnement et disaient: «Quel est donc celui-ci, pour que même les vents et la mer lui obéissent?».

L’Application

Il nous semble qu'une agitation extérieure a provoqué une agitation intérieure. En vérité, c'est tout le contraire. Puisque l'homme n'était pas intérieurement calme, et tranquille, le mouvement extérieur a tout bouleversé, a provoqué la peur, la peur de la mort. Puisque l'intérieur du Seigneur était calme et posé, les mouvements extérieurs n'étaient pas en mesure de percer le mur de la foi et de la certitude. Il est vrai qu'Il était le Seigneur des seigneurs, et le roi de l'univers, avec tout le pouvoir possible, y compris sur la nature.

"Nous sommes perdus" est un cri juste, qui ne vient pas d'un coup d'œil momentané, mais un cri profond de confiance en sa présence. Nous devons savoir crier, crier le plus fort possible, pour que d'autres entendent notre stress et que le Seigneur nous réponde. Il ne suffit pas que le Seigneur nous entende, car il le voit déjà. Puisque Dieu agit à travers nos frères et sœurs, les envoyés du Père, ils doivent aussi entendre ce cri. Soyons vrais et transparents.

Aujourd'hui, Mardi de la XIIIe semaine du Temps ordinaire, la liturgie nous présente l'un des moments les plus importants de la vie publique du Seigneur. La scène est d'une grande vivacité, qui oppose radicalement l'attitude des disciples et celle de Jésus. Nous pouvons imaginer l'agitation qui régna sur la barque quand «la mer s'agita violemment, au point que la barque était recouverte par les vagues» (Mt 8,24), mais cette agitation ne fut pas suffisante pour éveiller Jésus qui dormait. Ce furent les disciples qui, dans leur désespoir, durent réveiller le Maître!: «Seigneur, sauve-nous! Nous sommes perdus!» (Mt 8,25).

L'évangéliste utilise cette ambiance dramatique pour nous révéler la personnalité de Jésus. La tempête grondait toujours et les disciples étaient encore remplis de crainte, quand le Seigneur, simplement et tranquillement, se leva, «interpella vivement les vents et la mer, et il se fit un grand calme» (Mt 8,26). Sur l'ordre de Jésus, la paix revint, une paix qui ne devait pas seulement se réaliser sur l'eau agitée du ciel et de la mer: la Parole de Jésus avait surtout pour but d'apaiser les cœœurs craintifs des disciples. «Pourquoi avoir peur, hommes de peu de foi?» (Mt 8,26).

Les disciples passèrent du trouble et de la peur à l'admiration de qui vient d'assister à quelque chose d'incroyable. La surprise, l'étonnement, l'émerveillement face à un changement aussi radical de situation, suscita en eux une question centrale: «Quel est donc celui pour que même les vents et la mer lui obéissent?» (Mt 8,27). Qui est celui qui peut calmer les tempêtes du ciel et de la terre et, en même temps, celles des cœurs des hommes? Seul celui qui, «dormant comme homme dans la barque, peut donner des ordres aux vents et à la mer comme Dieu» (Nicète de Remésinie).

Quand nous sentons la terre se dérober, n'oublions pas que notre Sauveur est Dieu fait homme, proche de nous par la foi.

Today, the Gospel presents us —through two characters— a quality the good disciple of Jesus must have: a detachment from material goods. Before that St. Matthew's Gospel points out to a detail I would not like to overlook: “When Jesus saw a crowd around him…” (Mt 8:18). Crowds gather around the Lord to listen to his words, to be healed of their material and spiritual sicknesses; they are seeking their salvation and a breath of eternal Life amidst a world in conflict.

As at that time, something similar happens in today's world: more or less consciously, all of us need God's help, to satiate our heart with true spiritual goods, such as a better knowledge of Jesus Christ and a life of friendship and love for Him. Otherwise, we risk tumbling into the trap filling out our heart with other “gods” that cannot give meaning to our live: mobile phones, Internet, tourist holidays, a frantic work to make more money, a car better than the neighbor’s one or a gym where to excel with the best figure of them all... This is what is happening to many people right now.

In sharp contrast, though, St. John Paul II's outcry to the youth resounded full of force and confidence: «It is possible to be both modern and profoundly faithful to Jesus Christ». For this we need to do as the Lord, breaking away with what may link us to a much materialized way of life that serves no purpose other than closing the doors to the Holy Spirit.

“The Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head (...) Follow me” (Mt 8:22), says today's Gospel. And St. Gregory the Great reminds us: “We make use of temporal things, but our hearts are set on what is eternal. Temporal goods help us on our way, but our desire must be for those eternal realities which are our goal.” This is a good guideline to examine whether we are properly following Jesus.

Aujourd'hui, l'Évangile nous présente à travers ses deux personnages principaux une des qualités du bon disciple de Jésus: son indifférence à l'égard des biens matériels. Mais auparavant, le texte de saint Matthieu nous mentionne un détail que je ne voudrais pas négliger de souligner: «Jésus, voyant la foule autour de lui...» (Mt 8,18).

Une grande foule s'est assemblée auprès de Jésus pour écouter ses paroles, pour que ses maux, corporels et spirituels, soient taris; ils cherchent le salut et une souffle de Vie Joyeuse et Éternelle dans l'agitation de ce monde.

Il advient aujourd'hui quelque chose de semblable: tous —sens en prendre, peut être, conscience— avons besoin de Dieu, de rassasier notre cœur des véritables biens, comme la connaissance et l'amour de Jesús- Christ et une vie d'amitié avec Lui. Sinon, nous pouvons tomber dans le piège de vouloir remplir notre cœur d'autres “dieux” qui ne peuvent pas donner du sens à notre vie: le téléphone portable, l'Internet, les vacances aux Bahamas, le travail ininterrompu pour gagner chaque fois un peu plus d'argent, une voiture meilleure que celle du voisin, ou la salle de gym pour arborer le plus beau physique du pays.... C'est exactement ce qui arrive aujourd'hui à beaucoup du monde.

Par contraste, le cri plein de force et de confiance du Pape Jean Paul II retentit, lorsqu'il parle aux jeunes du monde: «On peut être moderne et profondément fidèle à Jésus Christ». Pour cela, comme dit le Seigneur, il est nécessaire de savoir renoncer à tout ce qui nous lie à une vie trop matérialiste qui ferme les portes à l'Esprit.

«Le Fils de l'homme n'a pas d'endroit où reposer sa tête. (…) Suis-moi» (Mt 8,22), nous dit l'Évangile d'aujourd'hui. Et saint Grégoire le Grand nous rappelle: «Les choses temporelles pour en user, les éternelles pour en jouir; temporelles comme à des voyageurs, les éternelles comme à des hommes en repos». C'est un bon critère pour examiner si nous suivons les traces de Jésus.

Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem, to the fulfilment of the divine will. Before the resurrection of Lazarus, it was Thomas who told us, let us go up with Him, and die with Him. With a firm determination, Jesus is advancing towards Jerusalem, the holy city of God. Being fully  aware of rejection, a rejection total, not only by the people of Israel, even by the Samaritans, and pagan world.   It is there, in this holy city, chosen by God that everything will change and everything will start again. Everything will change, because there will be a new tradition and the people will learn to adore God in Spirit and in Truth. Everything will begin again, because the divine will find its fulfilment par excellence in His only Son, a toal accomplishment of the divine promise.

Nothing will stop, neither the divine project nor his will. We will see failure all the time. It is a pity it was the Samaritans who did not want to receive Him. His own people have rejected Him. God will find another way, like the wise men who came to adore the new born king, and who were instructed to take a new path. Something new is unfolding. James and John, who wanted to take the place of the right and left, in the glory of God, the very ambitious students of the old school, will learn to act, not according to the rules that have been established, but according to this new commandment that Jesus will establish on the Cross. Love one another as I have loved you.  Violence and destruction, will gave way to forgiveness and reconciliation, which bring all together.

The readings of the day give us a single message: Discipleship and the joy of that disciple. My soul exalts the Lord and my spirit exults in God my Saviour.

I have no other happiness than you.

You teach me the way of life:

before your face, overflowing with joy!

At your right hand, eternity of delight!

How happy we are to hear this! How we would like it to be our hymn of the day! A feeling of being fulfilled, of having accomplished everything, a life laid down in peace, a life so hectic and yet so oriented ..... Now we ask ourselves this fair question: how can we appropriate this life?

Jesus suggests three ways: First of all, be free and committed. Free, because the Son of Man has none of the things you seek in Him. No honour, no power. You will see Him with empty hands, reaching out to you, to embrace you, to accompany you, and to protect you. The glory of man is found in his freedom, a pure and sincere heart, capable of standing upright and just before God.

The second, live in the present, and take care of yourself. Before going to the other, learn to stand up. Illuminate yourself, and you will be de facto the light of the world, and salt of the earth. If you want to stand back, if you want to live in the past, well, you can't be the disciple of the Lord. Look ahead and go forward, for there is a world waiting for you. You have a mission and carry it out.

The third advice: perseverance, an adventurous life, a response to call and not of your initiative. Nothing is easy. You have discerned well, don't back down. You have started a job, go to the end. You are called and sent. Be aware of this call and vocation. Once said YES to the Lord, don’t look back. Struggles are part of life. It will come and go, but you, remain steady and faithful to the vocation. The Lord who has called is with you and praying for you.

Before you become a disciple of the Lord, you must know him, not as a famous person, with a very rich teaching, be a member of His fan club, but as a person who loves you. Know Him in Fath, applaying your intelligence and love Him in truth. It is in love that you become His disciples. It is important that you define your relationship with Him, not from everything you have learned from outside world, even from the Holy Scriptures, as a beautiful and lovely divine relationship, rather from within, deep from your heart, where you hear the murmuring sound like a melodious music. It is from here that you are called and formed as a disciples of the Lord. It is here, within your heart that you will feel the joy of being His disciple, Amen.

Jésus est en route vers Jérusalem, pour l'accomplissement de la volonté divine. Avant la résurrection de Lazare, c'est Thomas qui nous dit : montons avec Lui, et mourons avec Lui. C'est là que tout va changer et que tout va recommencer. Tout va changer, parce qu'il y aura une nouvelle tradition. Tout recommencera, parce que la volonté divine trouvera son accomplissement par excellence dans son Fils unique.

Rien ne s'arrêtera, ni le projet divin, ni sa volonté. Nous verrons des échecs à tout bout de champ. Il est dommage que ce soient les Samaritains qui n'aient pas voulu Le recevoir. Dieu trouvera un autre chemin, comme les sages qui ont reçu l'ordre de prendre un nouveau chemin. Quelque chose de nouveau est en train de se dérouler. Jacques et Jean, qui voulaient prendre la place de la droite et de la gauche, les élèves très ambitieux de l'ancienne école, vont apprendre à agir, non pas selon les règles établies, mais selon ce nouveau commandement que Jésus établira sur la Croix. Aimez-vous les uns les autres comme je vous ai aimés.

Les lectures du jour nous donnent un seul message : La vie de disciple du Seigneur et la joie de ce disciple. Mon âme exalte le Seigneur et mon esprit exulte en Dieu mon Sauveur.

Tu m’apprends le chemin de la vie :
devant ta face, débordement de joie !
À ta droite, éternité de délices !

Comme nous sommes heureux d'entendre cela ! Comme nous aimerions que ce soit notre hymne du jour ! Le sentiment d'être comblé, d'avoir tout accompli, une vie posée en paix, une vie si trépidante et pourtant si orientée ...... Maintenant, nous nous posons cette juste question : comment pouvons-nous nous approprier cette vie ?

Jésus nous propose trois voies : Tout d'abord, être libre et engagé. Libre, parce que le Fils de l'homme n'a rien de ce que vous cherchez en Lui. Pas d'honneur, pas de pouvoir. Vous le verrez, les mains vides, vous tendre la main, vous embrasser, vous accompagner, vous protéger. La gloire de l'homme se trouve dans sa liberté, un cœur pur et sincère, capable de se tenir droit et juste devant Dieu.

La seconde, vis dans le présent, et prends soin de toi. Avant d'aller vers l'autre, apprenez à vous tenir debout. Illumine-toi, et tu seras de facto la lumière du monde, et le sel de la terre. Si tu veux rester en arrière, si tu veux vivre dans le passé, eh bien, tu ne peux pas être le disciple du Seigneur. Regardez devant vous et allez de l'avant, car il y a un monde qui vous attend. Tu as une mission et tu l'accomplis.

Le troisième conseil : la persévérance, une vie aventureuse. Rien n'est facile. Vous avez bien discerné, ne reculez pas Vous avez commencé un travail, allez jusqu'au bout.

Avant de devenir un disciple du Seigneur, vous devez le connaître, non pas comme une personne célèbre, avec un enseignement très riche, être membre de son fan club, mais comme une personne qui vous aime. Connaissez-le dans la foi, en mettant en œuvre votre intelligence et aimez-le dans la vérité. C'est dans l'amour que vous devenez Ses disciples. Il est important que vous définissiez votre relation avec Lui, non pas à partir de tout ce que vous avez appris du monde extérieur, même des Saintes Écritures, comme une belle et charmante relation divine, mais plutôt de l'intérieur, au plus profond de votre cœur, là où vous entendez le murmure comme une musique mélodieuse. C'est à partir de là que vous êtes appelés et formés en tant que disciples du Seigneur. C'est ici, dans votre cœur, que vous ressentirez la joie d'être son disciple, Amen.

When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her. When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child, they were going to call him Zechariah after his father, but his mother said in reply, “No. He will be called John.” But they answered her, “There is no one among your relatives who has this name.” So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called. He asked for a tablet and wrote, “John is his name,” and all were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God. Then fear came upon all their neighbors, and all these matters were discussed throughout the hill country of Judea. All who heard these things took them to heart, saying, “What, then, will this child be?” For surely the hand of the Lord was with him. The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the desert until the day of his manifestation to Israel.

The Application

On this feast day, I would like to share with you three points that can help you to live this day to the full.

God is watching over us and Jesus is praying for us: No one in this story knew that God was watching over them. Neither Mary nor Elizabeth knew it. Yet they were faithful and in love with the living God.

Being patient, trusting or open: Patience plays an important role in our faith journey. Even if we do not have all the elements of life, we must know how to trust God. In this trust woven through patience, we can be open.

Let God work in us: We must always surrender to God. We will discover his plan little by little. Like Mary, Elizabeth, Zechariah and John the Baptist, let us try to understand God's time and let ourselves be led by his Spirit.

Action of the day: Look at the world, as if you are just born in this world

Today, we solemnly celebrate the Nativity of the Baptist. St. John is a man of contrasts: he lives in the silence of the desert, but right from there he appeals to the crowds with convincing voice inviting them to convert; he is humble enough to say he is only the voice, not the Word, but he does not mince his words and dares to accuse and denounce all injustices even to the very king; he urges his disciples to meet with Jesus, but he does not mind rebuking king Herod while he is in prison. Silent and humble, he is also strong and courageous enough to shed his blood. John the Baptist is a great man! the greatest of them all, as Jesus himself will say in praise, but he is only Christ's precursor.

Perhaps, the secret of his greatness is the realization of knowing he has been chosen by God; this is how the evangelist explains it: “The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the desert until the day of his manifestation to Israel” (Lk 1:80). All his childhood and youth was marked by the understanding of his mission: to provide testimony; which he does by baptizing Christ in the river Jordan, by favorably disposing the crowds for the Lord and, at the end of his life, by shedding his blood in favor of the truth. With our knowledge about John, we could answer the question his contemporary was wondering about: “What, then, will this child be?” (Lk 1:66).

Through the baptism, we have been all chosen and sent to bear witness of the Lord. In an environment of indifference, St. John is a helping example to imitate; St. Augustine says: “Admire John as much as you can for, whom you admire is profitable to Christ. I insist, he is profitable to Christ, not because you offer anything to Him, but because of your being able to progress in Him”. In John, his attitude as a Messenger, clearly explicit in attentive prayer to the Spirit, in his fortitude and humility, helps us to establish new horizons of sanctity for us and for our brother.

(Lc 2,41-51): 

Chaque année, les parents de Jésus allaient à Jérusalem pour la fête de la Pâque. Quand il eut douze ans, ils firent le pèlerinage suivant la coutume. Comme ils s'en retournaient à la fin de la semaine, le jeune Jésus resta à Jérusalem sans que ses parents s'en aperçoivent. Pensant qu'il était avec leurs compagnons de route, ils firent une journée de chemin avant de le chercher parmi leurs parents et connaissances. Ne le trouvant pas, ils revinrent à Jérusalem en continuant à le chercher.

C'est au bout de trois jours qu'ils le trouvèrent dans le Temple, assis au milieu des docteurs de la Loi: il les écoutait et leur posait des questions, et tous ceux qui l'entendaient s'extasiaient sur son intelligence et sur ses réponses. En le voyant, ses parents furent stupéfaits, et sa mère lui dit: «Mon enfant, pourquoi nous as-tu fait cela? Vois comme nous avons souffert en te cherchant, ton père et moi!». Il leur dit: «Comment se fait-il que vous m'ayez cherché? Ne le saviez-vous pas? C'est chez mon Père que je dois être». Mais ils ne comprirent pas ce qu'il leur disait. Il descendit avec eux pour rentrer à Nazareth, et il leur était soumis. Sa mère gardait dans son coeur tous ces événements.

Aujourd'hui nous fêtons la mémoire du Cœur Immaculé de Marie. Un cœur sans tache, rempli de Dieu, totalement voué à l'obéissance et à l'écoute de Dieu. Le cœur, dans le langage de la Bible, signifie ce qu'il y a de plus profond dans la personne, l'endroit d'où jaillissent toutes les pensées, toutes les paroles et toutes les actions. Qu'est-ce qui jaillit du Cœur de Marie? Foi, obéissance, tendresse, disponibilité, servitude, force, humilité, simplicité, reconnaissance, et toute une panoplie inépuisable de vertus.

Pourquoi? La réponse nous la trouvons dans les paroles de Jésus «là où est ton trésor, là aussi sera ton coeur» (Mt 6,21). Le trésor de Marie est son Fils, et elle lui a donné tout son Cœur. Les pensées, les paroles et les actions de Marie ont comme source et comme but de contempler et plaire à Dieu.

L'Évangile de ce jour nous donne un bon exemple de ceci. Après nous avoir raconté la scène de l'enfant Jésus perdu et retrouvé dans le Temple, il nous dit «Sa mère gardait dans son cœur tous ces événements» (Lc 2,51). Saint Grégoire de Nicée nous dit: «Dieu se laisse contempler par les cœurs purs». Qu'est-ce que Marie garde dans son Cœur? Depuis l'Incarnation et jusqu'à l'Ascension de Jésus, en passant par les heures amères de la Passion, Elle a gardé dans son Cœur d'innombrables souvenirs médités et approfondis: la joie de la visite de l'ange Gabriel lorsqu'il lui annonça son rôle dans les desseins de Dieu, le premier baiser et la première fois qu'elle a serré Jésus nouveau-né dans ses bras, les premiers pas de son Fils sur Terre, constater sa croissance physique et spirituelle, leur “complicité” lors des noces de Cana, les enseignements de Jésus lors de ses sermons, la douleur salvatrice de la Croix, l'espérance dans le triomphe de la résurrection…

Demandons au Seigneur de nous donner la grâce de l'aimer chaque jour plus pleinement, avec tout notre cœur, en bons fils de Marie.

(Lk 15:3-7): 

Jesus addressed this parable to the Pharisees and scribes: "What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.' I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance."

The Application

Like the Marian devotion, many of us also have a special devotion to the Sacred Heart. In front of the door of our house we have a tradition of putting a picture of the Sacred Heart and also St. Michael.   Apart from our tradition or habit, this feast reminds us of the heart of Jesus, a heart filled with mercy and love. In this image we already see the thorns that pierce the heart and the shed Blood. Everything is there before us that  reveals to us, the pain and suffering in Jesus, perpetuated by our sins.

Yet the gospel does not speak of this suffering at all. Instead, it speaks of joy, the joy of Shepherd, the conversion of a single sinner. So we find that Jesus does not invite us to look at his suffering. He invites us to share in his joy and by our positive involvement we can multiply this joy on earth.

He would like his sheep to cling to him, to stay in his fold, to listen to his Word, to live fully in his goodness and generosity. He does not want his sheep to stray from his grace, especially his forgiveness and mercy. On this feast day, can we promise Him that we will be His sheep always faithful to Him and to His commandment of love?

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. From time immemorial, people have been “physically” placing in their hearts the best and the worst of the human race. Christ shows us his, with the scars of our sins, as a symbol of his love for all people, and it is from this very Heart, where past, present and future History is revitalized and renewed, where we can contemplate and understand the joy of He who has found what He had lost.

“Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep” (Lk 9:6). When we hear these words, we always tend to place ourselves in the group of the ninety-nine upright who do not need to repent, and observe “from a distance” how Jesus offers salvation to others who happen to be much worse than us. Not at all! Jesus' joy has a name and a face: mine, yours, his... we all are “the lost sheep” because of our sins; so we better stop adding fuel to the flames of our arrogance, while we think we are fully converted.

We live in a time where the concept of sin is played down or is even denied, where the Sacrament of Penance is considered by some as something hard, sad, and obsolete. But the Lord, in his parable, speaks only of celebration, and He does not do it only here, but all throughout the Gospels. Zaccheus, after having been forgiven, invites Jesus to eat to celebrate his conversion (cf. Lk 19:1-9); the prodigal's father forgives him and offers a party for his return (cf. Lk 15,11-32), and the Good Shepherd rejoices for his found lamb that had wandered off the trail.

St. Josemaria Escrivá said: “A man is worth what his heart is worth.” Let us meditate from Luke's Gospel whether the price —which appears on our heart's price tag— compares with the ransom the Sacred Heart of Jesus has paid for each one of us.

(Lc 15,3-7): 

Alors Jésus leur dit cette parabole: «Si l'un de vous a cent brebis et en perd une, ne laisse-t-il pas les quatre-vingt-dix-neuf autres dans le désert pour aller chercher celle qui est perdue, jusqu'à ce qu'il la retrouve? Quand il l'a retrouvée, tout joyeux, il la prend sur ses épaules, et, de retour chez lui, il réunit ses amis et ses voisins; il leur dit: ‘Réjouissez-vous avec moi, car j'ai retrouvé ma brebis, celle qui était perdue!’. Je vous le dis: C'est ainsi qu'il y aura de la joie dans le ciel pour un seul pécheur qui se convertit, plus que pour quatre-vingt-dix-neuf justes qui n'ont pas besoin de conversion».

L’Application

Comme la dévotion mariale, beaucoup d'entre nous ont aussi une dévotion particulière au Sacré-Cœur. Devant la porte de notre maison, nous avons la tradition de mettre une image du Sacré-Cœur et aussi de saint Michel.   Au-delà de notre tradition ou habitude, cette fête nous rappelle le cœur de Jésus, un cœur rempli de miséricorde et d'amour. Dans cette image, nous voyons déjà les épines qui transpercent le cœur et le Sang versé. Tout est là devant nous qui nous révèle, la douleur et la souffrance en Jésus, perpétuées par nos péchés.

Pourtant, l'évangile ne parle pas du tout de cette souffrance. Au contraire, il parle de joie, la joie du berger, la conversion d'un seul pécheur. Nous constatons donc que Jésus ne nous invite pas à regarder sa souffrance. Il nous invite à partager sa joie et, par notre implication positive, nous pouvons multiplier cette joie sur la terre.

Il voudrait que ses brebis s'accrochent à lui, qu'elles restent dans son bercail, qu'elles écoutent sa Parole, qu'elles vivent pleinement de sa bonté et de sa générosité. Il ne veut pas que ses brebis s'éloignent de sa grâce, surtout de son pardon et de sa miséricorde. En ce jour de fête, pouvons-nous lui promettre d'être ses brebis toujours fidèles à lui et à son commandement d'amour ?

Aujourd'hui, nous célébrons la solennité du Sacré Cœur de Jésus. Depuis longtemps, l'homme associe au cœur le meilleur ou le pire de l'être humain. Christ nous montre le sien, avec les cicatrices de notre péché, comme symbole de son amour pour les hommes, et c'est depuis ce cœur que revit et se renouvelle l'histoire du passé, du présent et du future, d'où nous contemplons et pouvons comprendre la joie de Celui qui retrouve ce qu'Il avait perdu.

«Réjouissez-vous avec moi, car j'ai retrouvé ma brebis, celle qui était perdue!» (Lc 15,6). Lorsque nous écoutons ces paroles, nous avons la tendance à nous imaginer dans le groupe des quatre vingt dix neuf justes et observons avec “distance” la façon avec laquelle Jésus offre la rédemption à plusieurs personnes que nous connaissons, qui sont bien pires que nous-même… Et bien non! La joie de Jésus porte un nom et a un visage. Le mien, le tien, celui de celui-là…, nous sommes tous “la brebis perdu” pour nos péchés; alors…, ne tirons pas davantage d'huile sur le feu de notre orgueil, pensant que nous sommes déjà convertis!

De nos jours, le concept de péché se relativise ou se renie. Le sacrement de la pénitence est considéré par quelques-uns comme dur, triste et obsolète. Le Seigneur nous parle de joie et ne le fait pas seulement en relation avec le sacrement de la pénitence, sinon qu'il s'agit d'une réalité présente dans tout l'Évangile. Zachée invite Jésus à manger chez lui pour célébrer, après avoir été pardonné (Lc 15,11-32) et le Bon Pasteur se réjoui pour avoir retrouvé celui qui s'était éloigné de son chemin.

Saint Josemaría disait qu'un homme “vaut ce que vaut son coeur”. Méditons depuis l'Évangile de Saint Luc si le prix —qui est inscrit sur l'étiquette de notre cœur— concorde avec la valeur de rédemption que le Sacré Cœur de Jésus a payé pour chacun de nous.

The Application

Christian life has its foundation in Christ and everything is built upon what is taught by Jesus, particularly love and forgiveness. We know very well that keeping this teaching is very difficult, particularly when we are facing people who are against us, and most importantly people those who work against love and pardon. This teaching of Jesus, is not only our foundation, it is also our own identity, as children of God. As Christian, our imitation of Jesus is, becoming children of God.

The house falls if Christ is not the rock and foundation,

"'For neither death nor life nor angels nor other things can separate us from the love of Christ' (Romans 8:38-39). Neither can the flooding of rivers, as in the lands of Egypt and Assyria [symbolize worldly wisdom opposed to God], do harm. Only those are harmed who build on sand, who practice the wisdom of the world. The winds that blow are like the false prophets. All these, coming together in one place, 'beat upon' the house. If it is founded on rock, they do no harm. 'The way of a snake upon a rock' is not to be found (Proverbs 30:19). But in the form of temptations and persecutions, which may mount into a flood, they beat upon even the one who seems to be well-founded. The house falls if it does not have Christ as its basis and foundation. But the truly wise person builds one's house 'upon a rock.' This is the way the Lord builds his church - upon the rock, with steadfastness and strength. This is why 'the gates of hell shall not prevail against it' (Matthew 16:18).
