Amen.

Gospel text (Mt 26,14-25):

One of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went off to the chief priests and said, «How much will you give me if I hand him over to you?». They promised to give him thirty pieces of silver, and from then on he kept looking for the best way to hand him over to them.

On the first day of the Festival of the Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and said to him, «Where do you want us to prepare the Passover meal for you?». Jesus answered, «Go into the city, to the house of a certain man, and tell him: ‘The Master says: My hour is near, and I will celebrate the Passover with my disciples in your house’». The disciples did as Jesus had ordered and prepared the Passover meal.

When it was evening, Jesus sat at table with the Twelve. While they were eating, Jesus said, «Truly, I say to you: one of you will betray me». They were deeply distressed and asked him in turn, «You do not mean me, do you, Lord?». He answered, «he who will betray me is one of those who dips his bread in the dish with me. The Son of Man is going as the Scriptures say He will. But alas for that one who betrays the Son of Man; better for him not to have been born». Judas, who was betraying him, also asked, «You do not mean me, Master, do you?». Jesus replied, «You have said it».

Today, the Gospel proposes us —at least— three considerations. The first one is that, when our love for God cools off, then our will yields to other temptations, where voluptuousness seems to offer us more savorous dishes while, in fact, they are prepared with degrading and disturbing poisons. Given our congenital fragility, we should not allow the fire of our fervor to cool down, fervor which if not sensibly, at least mentally, links us to him, who has loved us to the point of giving his life for us.

The second consideration refers to the mysterious election of the place where Jesus wants to celebrate His Paschal Supper. «Go into the city, to the house of a certain man, and tell him: ‘The Master says: My hour is near, and I will celebrate the Passover with my disciples in your house’» (Mt 26:8). Maybe, the master of the house was not one of our Lord's confirmed friends, but he must have had a very good ear to be able to listen to his “inside” calls. Our Lord would have spoken to him intimately —as He so often does with us—, throughout a thousand incentives, so that he would open his door. His imagination and omnipotence, which support his infinite love for us, have no limits and express themselves in ways always apt to every personal situation. When we hear his call we have to “surrender”, by leaving aside all sophisms and by happily accepting this “liberator messenger”. It is just as if someone would come to our prison door and would invite us, as the Angel did with Peter, by saying: «Arise up quickly!» (Acts 12:7).

The third motive of meditation is offered to us by the traitor who is trying to conceal his crime before the Omniscient's keen stare. Adam had already tried it, and later on, Cain his son, too, but both to no avail. Before becoming our most exacting Judge, God appears before us as a father and a mother, who do not surrender to the idea of losing their son. Jesus' heart suffers not so much because of the betrayal as it does with the realization that a son is irretrievably going astray from him.

Gospel text

(Jn 13,21-33.36-38):

Jesus was distressed in spirit and said plainly, «Truly, one of you will betray me». The disciples then looked at one another, wondering who He meant. One of the disciples, the one Jesus loved, was reclining near Jesus; so Simon Peter signaled him to ask Jesus whom He meant. And the disciple who was reclining near Jesus asked him, «Lord, who is it?». Jesus answered, «I shall dip a piece of bread in the dish, and he to whom I give it, is the one». So Jesus dipped the bread and gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. And as Judas took the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. Jesus then said to him, «What you are going to do, do quickly». None of the others reclining at table understood why Jesus said this to Judas. As he had the common purse, they may have thought that Jesus was telling him, «Buy what we need for the feast», or, «Give something to the poor». Judas left as soon as he had eaten the bread. It was night.

When Judas had gone out, Jesus said, «Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. God will glorify him, and He will glorify him very soon. My children, I am with you for only a little while; you will look for me, but, as I already told the Jews, so now I tell you: where I am going you cannot come». Simon Peter said to him, «Lord, where are you going?». Jesus answered, «Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but afterwards you will». Peter said, «Lord, why can't I follow you now? I am ready to give my life for you». Jesus answered, «To give your life for me! Truly, I tell you, the cock will not crow before you have denied me three times».

Those who wish to get my orientation, I give you the French commentary with google translations.

These days we will hear the narration of the Lord's Passion. For the application of the gospel, I would invite you to meditate on 'the hour of the Lord' and 'the glory of God.'

If there is one thing that Jesus took care of, it was 'the hour', the hour of his Father, the hour appointed, his hour. It is necessary to be in agreement with this hour which God has foreseen for us. The hour is closely linked to the divine will. The knowledge of God and his will will help us to identify the hour of God.

The glory of God is not in the death or suffering of Jesus, rather in the salvation of the world. The saved man is already the glory of God. If we want to glorify God, we must reconcile ourselves with Him and put the free man upright before Him.

The power of greed can only be overcome with the power of Christ's love poured out for us

Origen (185-254 AD), a bible scholar and early church father, comments on Judas' betrayal:

"Let us consider what Judas said to the Jewish priests: What will you give me if I hand him over to you? He was willing to take money in exchange for handing over the Word of God. They do the same thing who accept sensual or worldly goods in exchange for handing over and casting out from their souls the Savior and Word of truth who came to dwell with them. Indeed, it would be fitting to apply Judas's example to all who show contempt for the Word of God and betray him, as it were, by committing sin for the sake of money or for any selfish motive. People who behave in this way appear openly to be calling out to the powers of the enemy who offer worldly gain in return for the sin of betraying God's Word, saying, What will you give me if I hand him over to you? And they gave him thirty pieces of silver.

The number of coins they gave Judas was equivalent to the number of years the Savior had sojourned in this world. For at the age of thirty, he was baptized and began to preach the gospel, like Joseph was thirty years old when he began to gather grain for his brothers (Genesis 41:46). Just as at that time the grain was prepared by God for the sons of Israel but given also to the Egyptians, so also the gospel was prepared for the saints but preached also to the unfaithful and wicked." (Commentary on Matthew 78.)

«Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him»

+ Fr. Lluís ROQUÉ i Roqué
(Manresa, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we are given to contemplate Jesus in the darkness of His Passion days. Darkness that will be over when He will exclaim: «It is finished» (Jn 19:30); as of that moment, Easter's light will flare up. In Easter's glowing night —in opposition to the darkness of the vigil of his death— Jesus' words will become true: «Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him» (Jn 13:31). We can indeed say that each step Jesus takes is a step from death to Life and it has a Paschal character, expressed by an attitude of total obedience to the Father: «I have come to do your will» (Heb 10:9); attitude corroborated by words, gestures and deeds which are opening the way to his glorification as the Son of God.

Today, we also contemplate the person of Judas, the traitor apostle. And his heart, full of evil intentions he is seeking to dissimulate; hipocritically, he is also trying to cover up the greediness that rules and blinds him, despite he is so close to him, who is the Light of the world. In spite of being surrounded by Light and exemplar unselfishness, for Judas «it was night» (Jn 13:30): thirty silver coins, «the devil's excrement» —as Papini qualified money— have dazzled and gagged him. Dominated by avidity, he betrays and sells Jesus, the most honored amongst honored men; but Judas experienced despair too, for money is not everything and it can definitely enslave us.

Finally, we consider Peter with attention and devotion. Everything in him is good will, love, generosity, simplicity, nobility... He is Judas' counterpoint. It is true that three times Peter denied Jesus, but his intentions were not mean; he just did it out of cowardice and human feebleness. «He denied him for the third time, and when Jesus Christ looks at him, he immediately cried, and bitterly he cried» (Saint Ambrose). Peter's remorse and repentance was sincere as shown by his excruciating pain full of love. This is why, Jesus afterwards, reaffirmed him in the vocation and in the mission He had prepared for him.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 13,21-33.36-38):

Gospel text

(Jn 12,1-11):

Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany where he had raised Lazarus, the dead man, to life. Now they gave a dinner for him, and while Martha waited on them, Lazarus sat at the table with Jesus.

Then Mary took a pound of costly perfume made from genuine nard and anointed the feet of Jesus, wiping them with her hair. And the whole house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. Judas, son of Simon Iscariot —the disciple who was to betray Jesus— remarked, «This perfume could have been sold for three hundred silver coins and turned over to the poor». Judas, indeed, had no concern for the poor; he was a thief and as he held the common purse, he used to help himself to the funds. But Jesus spoke up, «Leave her alone. Was she not keeping it for the day of my burial? The poor you always have with you, but you will not always have me».

Many Jews heard that Jesus was there and they came, not only because of Jesus, but also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests thought about killing Lazarus as well, for many of the Jews were drifting away because of him and believing in Jesus.

The application

Today, where shall we put our accent for the gospel application? Let me start with Mary and her perfume. Her love for the Lord has pushed her to do something extraordinary that normal people won’t dare to imagine. Not only precious perfume is wasted, even her modesty is questioned by the way she washed the leg of the master. The real love is capable of pushing us to do something impossible for a normal human being. Jesus hasn’t abandoned her, rather He justifies her act. This act has a divine intention. Only Jesus could decode it for us. We need patience to realise it and to understand it.

There is another perfume which is capable of purifying and transforming each and every one of us, the Judas, in his wickedness failed to profit. There was a spiritual perfume that Mary wanted to profit, which her brother had already tasted in his resurrection. This external perfuming act has in fact perfumed all the believers who still love the Lord and gives us the hope of losing something very expensive and very precious for the Lord.

While entering in to this holy week, the Church proposes us the resurrection of Lazar by his presence in this perfuming act of Mary. His presence gives us lot of hope of our own resurrection. Even if we were dead by our sins and wickedness, the resurrection is always possible for us. The Master of the resurrection is with us and in Him we can also be resurrected. Let us not lose our hope because of our own limitedness. The Lord is great and merciful and in this divine mercy, all of have a precious place.

«Anointed the feet of Jesus, wiping them with her hair»

Fr. Jordi POU i Sabater
(Sant Jordi Desvalls, Giron
a, Spain)

Today, the Gospel summarizes two attitudes about God: Jesus Christ and life, in itself. Judas criticizes Mary for anointing Jesus' feet: «Judas, son of Simon Iscariot —the disciple who was to betray Jesus— remarked, ‘This perfume could have been sold for three hundred silver coins and turned over to the poor’» (Jn 12:4-5). What Judas said did not make sense, and it ties in with Jesus' doctrine. But it is much too easy to criticize what others may do, even when they had no hidden intentions, as it was the case with Judas.

Whatever our protest it must be an act of responsibility: with our protest we have to ask ourselves how would we do it instead, what are we willing to do, to do it better. Otherwise, our protest may just be —as it is actually the case here— the complaint, those who normally do it, wrongly use to make before those who try to do it the best they can.

Mary anoints Jesus' feet and she wipes them with her hair, because she truly believes this is what she must do. Her behavior can be qualified of splendid magnanimity: «Mary took a pound of costly perfume made from genuine nard» (Jn 12:3). It is an act of love, and like any act of love, difficult to understand by those who do not share it. I think that, as of that moment, Mary realized what, centuries later would write saint Augustine: «Maybe in this world the feet of our Lord are still in need. For, of whom, other than his members, said He: ‘Whatever you do unto the least of these, you do unto me. You spend that which you do not need, but you have done that which is good for my feet’».

Judas' complaint has no utility whatsoever, and it only led him to treachery. Mary's act led her to love her Lord even more and, as a consequence, to love more all the “feet” of Christ there are on this world.

Texte de l'Évangile

 (Jn 12,1-11):

Abbé Jordi POU i Sabater
(Sant Jordi Desvalls, Girona, Espagne)

We celebrate Palm Sunday, proclaiming with the crowd of Jerusalem "Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he who enters in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heavens! '"So many years of preparation and so much expectation, and the long awaited' Day of the Lord 'is there. Everything begins today with the crowd that will choose Barrabas. Like the high priest Caiaphas who has already prophesied, "it is better for one man to die for the people, and for the whole nation not to perish." This people will be liberated by a great King, king of the universe, whom they have condemned to death.

This king does not come in a chariot, no longer in a horse, and the prophet said to us, "Behold, your king is coming to you, full of sweetness, riding on a donkey. If He comes in a chariot, it is better take distance from him, for he is coming to conquer, and if He comes in a horse, there is no sense in standing in front of a powerful King who in war with us, and today rather He comes in an ass, He is at peace And comes to be reconciled with us by proposing Peace and Forgiveness. A King of Peace. Biblically when the king choses an ass, he is in mission for peace and reconciliation.

My friends as Christians how are we to welcome our King, the King of the universe in our hearts? He is in mission for peace, peace with us, we, who by our thinking and acting put ourselves against him.  We will not see him at the entrance of our city, where we can show our gratitude and our joy, singing together and welcoming him with red carpet. He will not be on an ass, to discover him in his humility and today, how will we recognize him among us, the saviour of the world?

The dead in Syria with the chemical bombardment does upset us. Yet we cannot justify the American bombardment either, violence that justifies another violence. For this people and others who are victims of wars, oppression, etc., how can our King liberate and save them? The temptation is great to seek a king with his chariot and his horse. Unfortunately we have no positive answer that can help us to master the current situation. The divine silence and the absence of his vengeance can disturb us. Yet in Jesus we have a lasting solution; Patience and dialogue, on everything to seek the divine will without making any judgment. His humanity did express in its utter disappointment and discouragement, ‘if you could remove this cup’ and in His divinity did accept the divine will.

The path of Jesus towards Calvary is ours. His most extreme solitude in the garden, the betrayal of his apostle, his sense of his Father's absence on the Cross, are our own path of faith. Jesus is alone in front of his people who condemn him to death and his heart-rending cry to his Father is totally human and divine. ‘Father, why have you abandoned me’ may be the cry of many of us who are suffering without any out-way or solution.

In his Cross and resurrection, we can find our hope. God who loves us, who gives himself in Jesus, will never abandon us. If He can take the cross and accept a humiliating death, He can go any extreme to save us and protect us.

It is important however from our part to receive this love and forgiveness, by reconciling ourselves with God and with our enemies. We should learn from the Lord, ‘forgive them, they don’t know what they do’. Sometime the contemporary history shows from many genocides that they knew what they did and many of the victims of present time, are pre-planned and the programmes were meritoriously executed, knowingly and wilfully.  With the merciful God, let us walk in joy, putting all our hope in the resurrection of the Lord, for He is also the Lord of justice and He will do justice for us.

Gospel text (Jn 11,45-56):

Many of the Jews who had come with Mary believed in Jesus when they saw what He did; but some went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. So the chief priests and the Pharisees called the Sanhedrin Council. They said, «What are we to do? For this man keeps on giving miraculous signs. If we let him go on like this, all the people will believe in him and, as a result of this, the Romans will come and sweep away our Holy Place and our nation». Then one of them, Caiaphas, who was High Priest that year, spoke up, «You know nothing at all nor do you see clearly what you need. It is better to have one man die for the people than to let the whole nation be destroyed». In saying this Caiaphas did not speak for himself, but being High Priest that year, he foretold as a prophet that Jesus would die for the nation, and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the scattered children of God. So, from that day on, they were determined to kill him.

Because of this, Jesus no longer moved about freely among the Jews. He withdrew instead to the country near the wilderness and stayed with his disciples in a town called Ephraim. The Passover of the Jews was at hand and people from everywhere were coming to Jerusalem to purify themselves before the Passover. They looked for Jesus and as they stood in the Temple, they talked with one another, «What do you think? Will He come to the festival?». Meanwhile the chief priests and the elders had given orders that anyone who knew where he was should let them know so that they could arrest him.

The application

Though in these days, the gospel messages are particularly revealing the salvific plan of God, and His merciful visage, we are sometime lost in our gospel application. Today is one such message. I would like to share with you, how I apply this gospel message in my day today life.

If we look in the gospel, it may sticks us to note that everything goes as God has planned. We have a feeling that even this plot to kill Jesus is also willed by God. For my personal life, I will look this Gospel with lot of hope. Even my failures and pains have a meaning in my life. Though God doesn’t wish that I suffer or fail, in these difficult moments of life, He is capable of transforming them as a grace for us, provided we put our trust in the Lord.

The second message is the unity of the people. God is there to unite the people and not to divide. It is in this unity that this people will be saved. The more we remain united, the more we are helped mutually for the reconciliation.

The third part is, very much personal. Jesus never reacts, rather acts. He takes the responsibility of His action. He never says, because of them I did this or didn’t do. In our personal life too, we should learn to act as children of God, than simply reacting upon the events or words of others. The more we act, the more we apply the discernment process, than passing the responsibility on others.

The last approach would be, as Jesus prepares Himself for His passion, let us prepare ourselves for the great feast. Have a wonderful day.

«Jesus would die for the nation, and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the scattered children of God»

Fr. Xavier ROMERO i Galdeano
(Cervera, Lleida, Spain)

Today, while on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus is aware he is persecuted, harassed, sentenced, because the greatest and newest his revelation has been —the announcement of the Kingdom of God— the greatest and wider has been too the division and the opposition He has found amongst his audience (cf. Jn 11:45-46).

The negative words by Caiaphas, «It is better to have one man die for the people than to let the whole nation be destroyed» (Jn 11:50), will be positively assumed by Jesus in the redemption performed for us. Jesus, God's only begotten Son, dies in the Cross for the love of all of us! He dies to make true the Father's plan, that is, «to gather the scattered children of God» (Jn 11:52).

And this is the wonder and the creativity of our God! Caiaphas, with his sentence («It is better to have one man die...») and out of his hate, does nothing else but to try to eliminate an idealist; God Father, instead, by sending his Son out of his love for us, does something wonderful: to transform that malevoulous sentence into a work of redemptive love, because to God Father, each man is worth all the blood shed by Jesus Christ!

One week from today, we shall sing —in solemn vigil— the Easter Proclamation. With this wonderful prayer, the Church praises the original sin. And it does not do it because the Church ignores its gravity, but because God —in his infinite goodness— has done some deeds as a response to man's sin. That is, in the face of the “original disgust”, He has replied with the Incarnation, with his personal immolation and institution of the Eucharist. This is why, next Saturday, our liturgy will sing: «O, admirable condescendence of your goodness! O, immeasurable predilection which you have loved us with! O, lucky guilt, that has deserved us so great a Redeemer!».

If only our sentences, words and actions could be no more a deterrent for the evangelization, since we, too, have been requested by Christ to gather the scattered children of God: «Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit» (Mt 28:19).
