Today we start our Lenten season. I compare this season with the desert experience. This desert experience is normally associated with the desert experience of the people of Israel and their march towards the Promised Land (forty years and ours forty days) and in the New Testament the desert experience of Jesus immediately after His baptism.

In these community and personal experiences, we associate our own desert experience, both with the Old Testament and the New Testament, thus creating a new experience both external and internal, which none have ever lived, neither in the past nor present, where I am called not to fall back for a simple imitation, rather to recreate a new experience both for the self and for others.  Thus we are individually and with other in a communitarian participative feeling, enter in this wonderful season, with joy, and hope.  A new transformed person is to born in us, for us and for the society.

Though there is no newness in this demarche, the fruit will be certainly new to us in a personal way, profiting all those who are associated with us directly and indirectly. Any faith orientation activity, if not connected with the community, somewhere we will be isolated. Even in the contemplative life, these monks who isolate themselves from the world and from others in the meditation and contemplation, are fully in prayer united with the people of God, with whom they consecrate their life to God.  Their consecration is neither for God, because God is not moved by our act, nor for themselves, because they then will become very much ego centric, rather for the people of God, where they themselves are part. Thus let us be aware that our Lenten observations may not be an isolated activity, though apparently it may seem to be, it is fully related to the whole community.

In this season, it is important that we remember few essential ingredients which may help us to live this moment in a useful and profitable manner. First of all, the desert experience was inspired by God and accepted by the people. Even in Jesus, the gospel says that he was led by the Holy Spirit. If we are not animated by the Holy Spirit, all our spiritual activities won’t produce the desired fruit. Just like Peter who went to fishing without Jesus and worked throughout the night without any catch, we too will end up without anything.

People of Israel where marching from slavery to a liberated life. Jesus was entering from the pure divinity towards the humanity allowing Himself to be tempted by the devil, just like us. It is important that we realise our present status, and walk towards the Promised Land. We should identify this Promised Land. Without identifying this and fixing this goal, we may continue to walk, and never be able to measure the depth of our engagement.

Jesus was guided by the Holy Spirit and the people were guided by Moses and Aron. Who will be our guide in these days? Let us take few biblical personages and see how they built their relationship with God after their fall. Let us recall David and his sin, Prodigal son and merciful father, adulterous women and unjudging Christ, Peter who denied Christ, Saul who became Paul, etc. These biblical personalities will help us to understand the divine mercy and the deep love of God for us.

The church proposes three means to live this moment in a meaningful way: Prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Let us contemplate on these means and apply them in a practical and simple way without any complications.

The final proposal will be a radical emptying. The people of Israel were ready to leave behind their identity of ‘slavery ‘and decided to follow God through Moses and Aron, towards an unknown land, to be ‘a liberated people’. They did fail, but God again and again made convent with them to re-establish their own dignity as the chosen people of God. Jesus’ incarnation was put in test in the desert and there were many such moments where Jesus was forced to resist to the temptation, particularly of human glory after every miracle. Nothing was easy. However with God everything moved as smooth as God willed.

We too be ready for these temptations during this period of Lend. It is important that we learn to empty ourselves, to be filled by God’ grace. If we fail, there is always a solution in the Divine Mercy, however,  let us not fail to stand up and look at Christ. Just like David who was forgiven, Saul who became Paul, God will certainly transform us.  I wish you all a meaningful celebration. God bless you.

Gospel text

(Mc 10,28-31):

At that time Peter began to tell Jesus, «We have given up everything to follow you». Jesus answered, «Truly, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters, or father or mother, or children, or lands for my sake and for the Gospel, who will not receive his reward. I say to you: even in the midst of persecution he will receive a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and lands in the present time and in the world to come eternal life. Do pay attention: Many who now are first will be last, and the last, first».

The message

We are naturally ambitious and many of us find it as a good approach to place us in the high pedestal. God always wishes that we grow and in our growth God’s will get accomplished. This growth is not limited to material or external accomplishments, rather our proximity in understanding the will of God and the rigorous application of this Will. It is in this application of God’s will that we are called to choose and reject. Being faithful to this will and our choice of God as the only source of life, will be certainly rewarded by God, because we will have God in our side. With God and in Him, we need nothing more than what is given.

The logic of this leaving behind everything and the truth of following Christ radically, is not to receive a special grace or favour from God, rather, because we have already received everything from God that we leave what we have, for God and for the Gospel. It is better understood by this image of emptying oneself of all that we have accumulated, to be filled by God and certainly by His goodness.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

The spiritual sense of leaving the family, by Clement of Alexandria, 150-215 A.D.

"Do not let this passage trouble you. Put it side by side with the still harder saying Jesus delivered in another place in the words, 'Whoever hates not father, and mother, and children, and his own life besides, cannot be my disciple' (Luke 14:26). Note that the God of peace, who exhorts us to love our enemies, does not arbitrarily require us literally to hate or abandon those dearest to us. But if we are to love our enemies, it must be in accordance with right reason that, by analogy we should also love our nearest relatives... But insofar as one's father, or son, or brother, becomes for you a hindrance to faith or an impediment to godly life, one should then not collude with that temptation. Attend to the spiritual, rather than the fleshly, meaning of the command." (excerpt from SALVATION OF THE RICH MAN 22.13)

«Truly, there is no one who has left house for my sake and for the Gospel who will not receive his reward in the present time and in the world to come eternal life»

Fr. Jordi SOTORRA i Garriga
(Sabadell, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, just like that landowner who went out early in the morning to hire men to work in his vineyard, the Lord is seeking disciples, followers and friends. His, is a universal call. A captivating offer, the Lord entrust us with! On one condition, though. One condition that may dishearten us: «For my sake and for the Gospel» you are to leave «house, brothers or sisters, or father or mother, or children, or lands» (cf. Mk 10:29).

But, is there any compensation? Shall there be any reward? Shall we make any gain out of it? Peter, in the name of the Apostles, reminds the Master: «We have given up everything to follow you» (Mk 10:28), as if asking: what benefit shall we get?

The Lord's promise is very generous: «but he will receive one hundred times more now in this time (…) and in the age to come eternal life» (Mk 10:30). He cannot be surpassed as far as generosity. But He adds: «even in the midst of persecution». Jesus is very realistic and He does not want to deceive anybody. To be a disciple of his, if we are truly so, will bring us troubles and problems. However, Jesus considers persecutions and troubles a reward, for they help us to grow, if we accept and live through them as an opportunity to gain in maturity and responsibility. Whatever act of sacrifice makes us more like Jesus Christ who, by dying in the Cross, saves us.

We have always time to revise our life and get closer to Jesus Christ, especially during the times of Advent and Lent. Through prayer and the sacraments, these times and all times, we can find out whether we are amongst the disciples He is seeking, and decide which our answer must be to that call. Next to radical responses (such as those from the Apostles) there are others. For many, “to leave house, brothers or sisters, or father or mother…” will just mean whatever unable us to live deeply in Jesus' close friendship and, as a consequence, become his testimony before the world.
And this is urgent, don't you think so?

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 10,28-31):

Abbé Jordi SOTORRA i Garriga
(Sabadell, Barcelona, Espagne)

Scripture:

Mark 10:17-27

17 And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" 18 And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 19 You know the commandments: `Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.'" 20 And he said to him, "Teacher, all these I have observed from my youth." 21 And Jesus looking upon him loved him, and said to him, "You lack one thing; go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." 22 At that saying his countenance fell, and he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions.

23 And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it will be for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!" 24 And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." 26 And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, "Then who can be saved?" 27 Jesus looked at them and said, "With men it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God."

The application

Yesterday I have terminated the homily by citing the demand of the Lord, “Search the Kingdom of God” and reminded my readers to give attention to two means proposed by the Lord. First is to choose the master and remain faithful to Him. And the second is to live in the present. Living in the present is, being aware of all that is happening in us and around us, and observe the people who surround us and their exterior and interior world.

It is in this observation of realities we discover the truth. Jesus is inviting this young man to observe not only the external world, which he was doing and respecting, but also his internal world, which he practically failed. The more he learns to see his internal thirst and desire (not dominated by external elements), the more he will be able to identify his needs and respond to them positively.

If Jesus has proposed a strange way, it was in response to his sincere desire. Sadly, this young man didn’t listen his own internal desire and thirst, by consequence he didn’t realise the truthfulness and the importance of Jesus’ proposal, which would have certainly assured him the eternal life which he so desired.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

Seek the life that endures, by Augustine of Hippo, 354-430 A.D.

"The Lord said to a certain young man, 'If you would enter life, keep the commandments' (Matthew 19:17; Mark 10:17; Luke 18:18). He did not say 'If you would have life' but 'If you would enter life,' defining that life as eternal life. Let us first consider then the love of this life. For this life is loved, whatever its quality; and however troubled it is, however wretched, people are afraid to end it. Hence we should see, we should consider, how much eternal life is to be loved, when this miserable life that must at some time be ended is so loved. Consider, brothers, how much that life is to be loved when it is a life you never end. You love this life, where you work so much, run, are busy, pant. In this busy life the obligations can scarcely be counted: sowing, plowing, working new land, sailing, grinding, cooking, weaving. And after all this hard work your life comes to an end. Look at what you suffer in this wretched life that you so love. And do you think that you will always live and never die? Temples, rocks, marbles, all reinforced by iron and lead, still fall. And a person thinks that he will never die? Learn therefore, brothers, to seek eternal life, when you will not endure these things but will reign with God forever." (excerpt from SERMON 84.1.9)

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 10,17-27):

Scripture:

Matthew 6:24-34

24 "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. 25 "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, `What shall we eat?' or `What shall we drink?' or `What shall we wear?' 32 For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well. 34 "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day.

My Homily

For a desperate people, Temple destroyed, half of them in Exile, through the prophet Isaiah God makes them to understand not only the divine sensibility, but also one of the divine qualities, a purely human and understandable comparison, A maternal love towards the divine love where God will give himself in Jesus Christ. God is present and sensible to their sufferings.  "Even if your mother forgets you, I will not forget you. ", An assurance and confirmation, especially for a people constantly unfaithful. The Christian faith and the relationship we have with God is founded in this divine mercy, a faithful God to his covenant. It is in this faithfulness that we find the source of divine mercy and love.

All those who have recognized this mercy of God, like the sinful woman, the rich Zacchaeus, the publican before the Temple, Peter who denied the Lord, Thomas the unbeliever, and the Saul who became Paul, have glorified the Lord.  And the Lord has raised them from an ordinary people towards a transformed humanity. The adulteress woman will become the apostle of the apostles, because God has chosen her to announce the resurrection to His disciples.  Thomas was the first one to proclaim after resurrection that Jesus was ‘God’. Paul became after his conversion the Christ of the pagans. The psalmist today sings this glory in joy.

As a good servant faithful to his master who seeks the means to please his lord, who remains faithful, we Christians are invited to seek this divine will in our lives and to remain a faithful servant to our Master’s will. This will, if we apply it in our everyday life, will raise us from where we are, and will make us worthy, a dignity that will make us participate in the divinity of God. If St. Paul tells us that his conscience does not reproach him, it is not that he is just before his conscience or before men, but rather before the One who has called him. He stands right before his Master, the Lord.

Fidelity requires us two imperatives. We must discern and choose our master. In his logic, Jesus assures us that humanly, it is not possible to submit to the authority of two masters in the extremity. Either one accepts the one, and rejects the other, either one attaches to the one and despises to the other.

Second, contrary to our human habits in this precarious life, he asks us not to worry about tomorrow, for He is with us, He loves us and accompanies us. He gives us everything we need. We must know how to live in the present fully, for each day itself weighs us.

Living in the present, we will be aware of all that is going on around us and in us, especially the works of God in this world and the way He accompanies us. In this discovery we will fill our hearts with a feeling of thankfulness and gratitude. This is the visible sign of the Kingdom of God and Jesus invites us to seek it. In this Kingdom we must live worthily as heirs, not as slaves. Let us ask Him for the grace of discernment and wisdom that will help us first to seek this Kingdom of God and His righteousness.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

The value of life, by John Chrysostom, 547-407 A.D.

"Note the acceleration of images: just when the lilies are decked out, he no longer calls them lilies but 'grass of the field' (Matthew 6:30 ). He then points further to their vulnerable condition by saying 'which are here today.' Then he does not merely say 'and not tomorrow' but rather more callously 'cast into the oven.' These creatures are not merely 'clothed but 'so clothed' in this way as to be later brought to nothing. Do you see how Jesus everywhere abounds in amplifications and intensifications? And he does so in order to press his points home. So then he adds, 'Will he not much more clothe you?' The force of the emphasis is on 'you' to indicate covertly how great is the value set upon your personal existence and the concern God shows for you in particular. It is as though he were saying, 'You, to whom he gave a soul, for whom he fashioned a body, for whose sake he made everything in creation, for whose sake he sent prophets, and gave the law, and wrought those innumerable good works, and for whose sake he gave up his only begotten Son.'" (excerpt from THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW, HOMILY 22.1)

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 6,24-34):

Gospel text (Mc 10,1-12):

Jesus went to the province of Judea, beyond the Jordan River. Once more crowds gathered around him and once more He taught them, as He always did. Some (Pharisees came and) put him to the test with this question, «Is it right for a husband to divorce his wife?». He replied, «What law did Moses give you?». They answered, «Moses allowed us to write a certificate of dismissal in order to divorce». Then Jesus said to them, «Moses wrote this law for you, because you are stubborn. But in the beginning of creation God made them male and female, and because of this, man has to leave father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one body. So they are no longer two but one body. Therefore let no one separate what God has joined».

When they were indoors at home, the disciples again asked him about this and He told them, «Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against his wife, and the woman who divorces her husband and marries another also commits adultery».

Today, I would like, dear Lord, to say a little prayer to thank you for your teaching. You taught with authority whenever they let you, and you were taking advantage of all occasions; I understand Lord that, as a matter of fact, your basic mission was to transmit the Word of the Father. And you did it.

—Today, while “connected” to Internet, I tell you: Speak to me for, as a faithful disciple, I want to pray a little. First, I would like to beseech capacity to learn what you are teaching and, secondly, I wish I would know how to teach it myself. I know it is easy to err making you say what you have never said and, with malevolent boldness, I wish you would say what I like. I admit that I am, perhaps, more hard-hearted than those listeners.

I know your Gospel, the Teachings of the Church, the Catechism, and I remember pope John Paul II's words in his Letter to Families: «The programme of utilitarianism, based on an individualistic understanding of freedom —a freedom without responsibilities— is the opposite of love, even as an expression of human civilization considered as a whole». Lord, break my heart, which longs for a utilitarianism happiness and let me in your Divine Truth I so much need.

—From this vantage point, like on top of the mountain, I can see that You speak of marital love as the love that lasts forever, and that adultery —being a sin, as any other grave offense to You, who are the Lord of Life and Love— is the wrong way to happiness: «Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against his wife» (Mk 10:11).

—I remember a young man who said: «Father, sin promises a lot, gives nothing and takes everything». Good Jesus, let me understand you, and let me learn how to explain it: «let no one separate what You have joined» (cf. Mk 10:9). Out of here, out of your ways, I shall not be able to find the true happiness. Jesus, teach me again!

—Thanks, Jesus, I'm hard-hearted, but I know you are right.
