Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 7,21-29.

Scripture: Matthew 7:21-29

21 "Not every one who says to me, `Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, `Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' 23 And then will I declare to them, `I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.' 24 "Every one then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock; 25 and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And every one who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand; 27 and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it." 28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

The message

Yesterday we meditated on the ‘good tree and good fruit’. We were convinced that we can discover the quality of the person, just by judging their acts. There are many in this world try to do good so that other may discover that they are good. They depend entirely on these acts for a good certificate from the people and do the maximum possible to protect this ‘good image’ they have created in the minds of the society. Though this philosophy may be considered good, because they do good deeds, there is something essentially is lacking. The tree doesn’t give fruit to show the quality of the tree. It acts naturally and this neutrality is missing in such people.

As Christians we have another yard stick to measure the quality of life. Are we doing the will of the Father? Though these persons of the gospel did good needs and even in the name of Jesus, there was something very important and essential for Christ was lacking: the will of the Father. Our act and deed should have its source in our relation with the Father.

It is in this relationship that we are called to act and our actions will be natural, because we can’t do other way. Jesus is not asking us to do good deed, it is naturally understood. The question is, are we faithful to the Will of the Father? If we are rooted in Christ, then all that we do can be compared to the house build on the rock. If not, though our deeds may be the same, sometime better than the holy people, when confronted by temptations and troubles, all that we have constructed will disappear in front our eyes, because they didn’t have the solid foundation, but simple and good appearance.

Commentary of the day

Saint Benedict (480-547), monk, co-patron of Europe
Rule, Prologue 19-38 (trans. Justin McCann OSB)

"To enter the kingdom of heaven... you must do the will of my Father "

What can be sweeter to us, dearest brethren, than this voice of our Lord inviting us? Behold in his loving mercy the Lord shows us the way of life... And, if we wish to dwell in the tabernacle of his kingdom, unless we run there with good deeds we shall not arrive. But let us ask the Lord with the prophet: “O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy mountain?” (Ps 15,1). Then, brethren, let us hear the Lord answering and showing us the way to that tabernacle and saying: “He who walks blamelessly and does justice; who thinks the truth in his heart..., who harms not his fellow man, nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor” (vv.2-3)...

Such men as these, fearing the Lord, are not puffed up on account of their good works, but judging that they can do no good of themselves and that all comes from God...: “Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name give the glory” (Ps 115[114b],1). So the apostle Paul imputed nothing of his preaching to himself, but said: “By the grace of God I am what I am” (1Cor 15,10)...

Wherefore the Lord also says in the Gospel: “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been solidly set on rock”. Having given us these instructions, the Lord daily expects us to make our lives correspond with his holy admonitions. And the days of our lives are lengthened and a respite allowed us for this very reason, that we may amend our evil ways. For the Apostle says: “Are you unaware that the kindness of God would lead you to repentance?” (Rm 2,4). For the merciful Lord says: “Do I not rather rejoice when the wicked turns from his evil way that he may live?” (Ez 18,23).

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 7,15-20.

Scripture: Matthew 7:15-20

15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every sound tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears evil fruit. 18 A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will know them by their fruits.

Commentary of the day

Bearing wonderful fruit

If someone feels that God is asking him to become involved in reforming society, that is a matter between him and his God. We all have the duty to serve God where we feel called to do so. I feel called to serve individuals, to love each human being. I never think in terms of masses, of a group, but always according to persons. If I thought of the crowds, I would never undertake anything. It is the person who counts. I believe in face to face encounters.

The fullness of our heart becomes visible in our actions: how I behave with this leper, how I behave with this dying person, how I behave with this homeless person. Sometimes, it is more difficult to work with down-and-outs than with the people who are dying in our hospices, for the latter are at peace, waiting to go to God soon. You can draw near to the sick person, to the leper, and be convinced that you are touching the body of Christ. But when it is a drunk person yelling, it is more difficult to think that you are face to face with Jesus hidden in him. How pure and loving must our hands be in order to show compassion for those beings!

To see Jesus in the spiritually most deprived person requires a pure heart. The more disfigured the image of God is in a person, the greater must our faith and our veneration be in our search for the face of Jesus and in our ministry of love for him… Let us do so with a sense of profound gratitude and with piety. Our love and our joy in serving must be in proportion to the degree to which our task is repugnant.

Scripture: Matthew 7:6,12-14

6 "Do not give dogs what is holy; and do not throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under foot and turn to attack you. 12 So whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them; for this is the law and the prophets. 13 "Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

The message

Given many images, I would like to take ‘the narrow gate’, because it helps me personally to grow spiritually. The wider the way becomes, the rich in options and choices which the contemporary world wish to each and every one of us. When there are many choices, it is a moment of discernment and decision. Staying in the Carrefour is staying without taking the right direction. The more the way becomes narrow, the less will be the options and choices. The people those who have chosen such a narrow way show to us that these people have already taken the decision with proper discernment and they are on the right path. Jesus is asking us to narrow down the options and choose the right path, a narrow path with less distractions and temptations.

It is in this narrow path we will be able to distinguish what is pleasing to God and decide better to know Him and serve Him. Since we have less options and choices, we will be careful in our decisions and behaviours, which not only be helpful to us, but also to others. On this narrow path the Lord Himself will our guide and our source. Thus will be waking with certitude and hope.

Commentary of the day

Origen (c.185-253), priest and theologian
Homilies on Exodus, no. 5, 3 ; SC 321 (SC p. 157 rev.)

"How constricted the road that leads to life"

Let us take a look at what God said to Moses and which road he was told to choose... You may perhaps think that the way shown by God is straightforward and easy, that it involves absolutely no difficulty. To the contrary, it is an ascent, a very twisting climb! For the path by which we make our way towards the virtues does not go downwards but upwards and it is a narrow and difficult climb. Hear the Lord again, speaking in the the Gospel: “How strait and narrow is the way that leads to life!” See, then, how the Gospel matches the Law... Isn't it true to say that even the blind can see this clearly? One Spirit has written both the Law and the Gospel.

So the way by which we make progress follows a twisting ascent...; acts of virtue and faith involve a good many difficulties and efforts for many temptations, many obstacles set themselves against those who desire to act according to God's way. Then, too, in the faith we come across many a tricky thing, many points of debate, many objections from heretics... Listen to what Pharaoh said when he saw the way Moses and the Israelites had taken: “Those people are wandering about aimlessly” (Ex 14,3). Where Pharaoh was concerned those who follow God are going astray. As has been said, the way of wisdom is tortuous, with frequent twists and difficulties and numerous detours. And so to confess that there is one God and, in the same confession, to affirm that Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one God, how complicated, how difficult, how inextricable that seems to unbelievers! Then to add that “the Lord of glory” was crucified (1Cor 2,8) and that he is the Son of Man “who has come down from heaven” (Jn 3,13), how complicated, how difficult it seems! Someone hearing it without faith says: “Those people are going astray.” But you should stand firm, don't put such faith into doubt knowing that God is showing this way of faith to you.

En ce temps-là, Jésus disait à ses disciples : « Ne jugez pas, pour ne pas être jugés ;

Commentaire du jour

Saint Jean Climaque (v. 575-v. 650), moine au Mont Sinaï
L'Échelle sainte, 10ème degré (trad. Bellefontaine 1978, coll. SO 24, p. 138 rev.)

Scripture: Matthew 7:1-5

1 "Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, `Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

Commentary of the day

Saint John Climacus (c.575-c.650), monk on Mount Sinai
The Ladder of Perfection, 10th step

"Why do you notice the splinter in your brother's eye?"

I have heard some people speak ill of their neighbour and have rebuked them. To defend themselves, these evildoers have answered: “We are saying these things out of charity and concern for them!” However, I have replied: “Stop practising a charity like that or you will be accusing of deceit the one who said: 'Whoever slanders his neighbour in secret, him will I destroy,' (Ps 101[100],5). If you love him – as you claim – pray for him in secret and don't make a mock of the man. This is the way of loving that pleases the Lord; don't lose sight of it and you will take the greatest care not to judge sinners. Judas was of the number of the apostles and the thief was among the criminals but, in an instant, what an astonishing change!...”

So reply to anyone who speaks evil of his neighbor to you: “Stop, brother! I myself fall into the most serious faults every day; how could I now condemn this man?” Thus you will make a twofold gain: you will heal yourself and heal your neighbor. Not judging is a shortcut towards the forgiveness of sins, if this saying is true: “Do not judge and you will not be judged”... Some people have committed grave faults in the sight of everyone but, in secret, have carried out the greatest acts of virtue. Thus their detractors have been mistaken by focussing only on the smoke without seeing the sun...

Those who are hastily censorious and severe fall into this delusion because they don't keep the memory and constant care of their own sins before them... Judging others is shamelessly to usurp a divine prerogative; condemning them is to bring down our own souls... Just as a good grape-picker eats the grapes that are ripe and does not pick those that are green, so a watchful and sensible soul carefully takes note of all the virtues he sees in others; but it is the stupid man who keeps an eye on their faults and failings.

Évangile de Jésus Christ

selon saint Luc 9,18-24.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 9:18-24.

Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say that I am?"
They said in reply, "John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, 'One of the ancient prophets has arisen.'"
Then he said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter said in reply, "The Messiah of God."
He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone.
He said, "The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised."
Then he said to all, "If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.

Homily

"For you, who am I? "A very personal question requires a personal response. We have a personal God, calls every one individually, and establishes personal relationship by assigning a personal mission, which is part of the universal mission, the salvation. Even if our faith is essentially communitarian by its own nature, if it is not based on the personal relationship with God, it will be like a house built on sand than on rock. If my faith does not lead me to God's people, or does not gather people together, this is no longer the faith that the Apostles have transmitted to us through the generations. Faith helps us to divine encounter, it gathers and builds community.

This community is not built with false promises. It is built with concrete evidence and foundation. It is from a personal encounter with God. It is in this personal encounter that God reveals himself to His people, not only his majesty as Almighty God, but the pain, the suffering, the rejection and the death on the cross. In His journey on the earth, He showed us that the incarnation, death and resurrection are closely related. His journey does not end by the ascension, He rather plunges back into humanity by Pentecost, sending the Holy Spirit to guide us and help us to understand all that He has taught us.

"God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, not to judge, but by Him that the world might be saved," says St. John in his gospel. Love is an act. By His cross and resurrection, God has shown us how and how much He loves us. We need from our part show Him in a concrete way by our actions how much and how we love Him.

We must recognize however that we live in a world that takes away the life choices, discarding everything that does not please him and destroying everything as unnecessary. To this contemporary world the Cross reminds the death of an innocent man, and justly they may have the reason from the history. It is sad though that it refuses to go further from the death to the resurrection, from condemnation to forgiveness, from rejection to acceptation, from destruction to elevation. While the normal desires to take away the pain, suffering, pain, and even death, this world fails to see the merit which these sufferings and pains are capable of transforming the world.

Jesus teaches us to look life in a very different way. When we see the Crucifix, we cannot fix our gaze on death, but on the resurrection. Life does not end with death, it is rather transformed. My friends in Christ, life on earth is not the end, but a course offered by the Lord to taste the wonderful creation, discover the beauty of the universe and glorify God. Let us live this life in its fullness and learn to look further, towards the invisible, where remains the truth, the truth in its entirety. This truth will help us to learn that without taking the cross we will never see the resurrection. It will save us. Let us be wise in our discernment. Instead of showing interest of what life can offer to us, let us show interest in the source of life, God, who give not only the life, but all that life can offer to us. May God bless you all.

saint Matthieu 6,24-34.

Scripture: Matthew 6:24-34

24 "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. 25 "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, `What shall we eat?' or `What shall we drink?' or `What shall we wear?' 32 For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well. 34 "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day.

The message

In this contemporary world to live a life without worrying or anxious about tomorrow may seems to be ridiculous, but in truth, it says all about. If there is something that we should worry about is our inner self and inner peace that assures us the joy, which is achievable only by us. This is essential of life and the kingdom of God. Only those who have inner peace and joy can identify the same outside of us. If I am not able to find what I have, how can I be able to trace out what others have?

The perfect happiness can be found only in God says Saint Thomas Aquinas. Our little human experience says that those who have found God in their life, have found peace and joy here on the earth. Anything material though may look like essential is not essential for this joy. Man basically needs very little material support to have a happy life. If we are seeking inner peace and joy, it is not in the material fulfilment, rather in the spiritual enrichment that we can find it.

It is here our faith plays an important role. Faith gives us hope and incite in us charity. A good Christian has to be active in charity and at the same time contemplative in their relationship with God, be able to see God in everything. A perfect charity will lead us to God and a perfect contemplation will lead us to charity.

Commentary of the day

Saint Vincent de Paul (1581-1660), priest, founder of religious communities
Conference given on 21/02/1659

Seek first the kingdom of God

“Seek first the kingdom of God and its righteousness and everything you need will be added to you”... It is said, then, that we should seek the Kingdom of God. “That we should seek”: it's a simple word but it seems to me to be saying a great deal. It means... unceasing work for God's Kingdom, not remaining in an indolent, motionless state but paying attention to one's interior state so as to govern it well, not playing around at the exterior level... Seek God within yourself since Saint Augustine confesses that, so long as he sought him outside himself, he failed to find him. Seek him in your soul as in a pleasant dwelling place because this is the basis on which those servants of his establish them who try to put all the virtues into practice . We have to have an interior life, we have to move towards this; lacking this we lack everything... Let us try to make ourselves interior... Let us seek God's glory, seek the reign of Jesus Christ...

“But, [you will tell me], there's so much to do, so many household jobs, so much business in town, in the fields; work everywhere! Do we have to abandon it all, then, so as to think of nothing but God?” No; but these occupations have to be sanctified by seeking God in them and doing them to find him in them rather than to see them done. What our Lord wants is for us to seek his glory, his kingdom, his righteousness before all else and, for this, to make our foundation the interior life, faith, trust, love, religious exercises..., labors and sufferings, with God our sovereign Lord in view... Once we are firmly set in the search for God's glory we can be assured that the rest will follow.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 6,19-23.

La lampe du corps, c’est l’œil. Donc, si ton œil est limpide, ton corps tout entier sera dans la lumière ;

Scripture: Matthew 6:19-23

19 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. 22 "The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light; 23 but if your eye is not sound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

Commentary of the day

Saint Caesarius of Arles (470-543), monk and Bishop
Sermon 32, 1-3 ; SC 243

"Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be"

God accepts our offerings of money and is pleased with the gifts we make to the poor, but on one condition: that every sinner, when offering God his money, should offer him his soul at the same time... When our Lord says: “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God” (Mk 12,17), what does he seem to say but: “Just as you repay Caesar with his own image on a coin so repay God with the image of God within yourselves” (cf. Gn 1,26)...

That is why, as we have already said on numerous occasions, when we hand out money to the poor let us offer our souls to God so that, where our treasure is, there our heart may also be. Indeed, why does God ask us to give money? Unquestionably because he knows the special love we have for it, that we are always thinking about it and that, where our money is, there too is our heart. That is why God urges us to make up our treasure in heaven by making gifts of it to the poor; it is so that our hearts may follow where we have already sent our treasure and that, when the priest says: “Lift up your hearts” we may answer with peaceful conscience: “We lift them up to the Lord.”

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 6,7-15.

Scripture: Matthew 6:7-15

7 "And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.11 Give us this day our daily bread; 12 And forgive us our debts, As we also have forgiven our debtors; 13 And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. 14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; 15 but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

The message

Many of us have turned this wonderful prayer as a prayer of supplication, forgetting the core of this prayer: Kingdom of God and His will. This prayer for me is a call to know the Kingdom of God and discover the will of the Father, not only in heaven, but importantly on this earth. It gives us the hope that God’s Kingdom is not a simple dream unachievable, but a reality that needs our cooperation for its accomplishment.

If we look this prayer with this orientation, then there are many things that we are called to work with our human efforts by divine guidance. First, it’s important that we establish a Father-child relationship with God, in full confidence and hope just like a child, where the child waits for the word from the Father and the way or direction to accomplish. From this source of divine relationship establishes our human relationship, where it begins with forgiveness and pardon, and ends with the finality of establishing a society which resembles the heavenly Jerusalem here on the earth.

All that we can justly demand should be coherent with the knowledge not only about or of God, but also His will and the mission entrusted to us. Without these elements if we insist in our supplication, we may end up in asking what is not needed or what we have already received. Shall we make a revision of our prayers?

Commentary of the day

Saint Cyprian (c.200-258), Bishop of Carthage and martyr
The Lord’s Prayer, 14-15

“Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

It is not that God can do what he wants, but that we can do what he wants. Who can prevent God from doing what he wants? But we others, we who are thwarted by the devil, who prevents us from obeying the will of God in everything, both interiorly and exteriorly. So we ask that his will be done in us. But so that it might be done, we need his help. Nobody is strong through their own resources, but rather, their strength lies in the goodness and mercy of God…

The will of God is what Christ did and taught: humility in his conduct, solidity in his faith, modesty in his words, justice in his actions, mercy in his works, discipline in his habits. It is the will of God not to act wrongly towards anyone, to bear the wrong that is done to us, maintain peace with our brethren, love God with all our heart, love him because he is the Father and fear him because he is God; not to prefer anything to Christ since he preferred us to all else, to adhere inviolably to his love and remain beneath the cross with courage and trust. When it is a matter of fighting for his name or his honour we should show constancy in our words; we should prove that we trust him in the midst of our difficulties so as to bear the struggle, being patient in death so as to obtain the crown. This is what wanting to be co-heirs with Christ means: to fulfill God’s precepts and do God’s will.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 6,1-6.16-18.

Mais toi, quand tu jeûnes, parfume-toi la tête et lave-toi le visage ;

Scripture: Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

1 "Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 "Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

5 "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

16 "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

The message

We give lot of attention to the action, because the act speaks better than the words. We are tempted to give importance to the act committed by the person, because the act reveal the quality of the person. However what they are, ‘the being’ can still hide from what they speak and what they do, because it is invisible to us. Jesus is asking us to give attention neither to the act nor the valour of the act, rather the manner we do it and why we do it. The great difference between the great people and ordinary people is that an ordinary person longs to do great things and an extraordinary person does small things in a great way.

In today’s gospel Jesus is asking us to do not great things, but a little act like prayer in a special way, which is visible only to God, never to others. Great people hide everything from the eyes of other person and love to keep everything in front of God. Thus visibility and recognition of their act or the very person, have no importance in their life. They always wish that God takes the first place and love to choose the last seat.

Shall we be a different person in this power and name hungry world?

Commentary of the day

Saint Pio of Pietralcina "Padre Pio" (1887-1968), Capuchin
GF, 173; Ep 3, 982-983

“Close the door, and pray to your Father in private”

Be assiduous in prayer and meditation. You told me you had already begun. That is a great consolation for a father who loves you as himself! So continue to progress in this exercise of love of God. Take another step every day: at night by the weak light of a lamp, in the midst of weakness and in spiritual dryness; or by day, in joy and the illumination that dazzles the soul…

If you can, speak to the Lord in prayer, praise him. If you cannot manage that because you have not yet progressed enough in the spiritual life, do not worry. Go to your room and close the door and place yourself in God’s presence. He will see you and will appreciate your presence and your silence. Then he will take you by the hand, speak to you, take a hundred steps along the paths of the garden of prayer, and there you will find consolation. Remaining in God’s presence simply in order to show our will to acknowledge that we are his servants is an excellent spiritual exercise, which will make us progress on the way of perfection.

When you are united with God through prayer, look at who you are in truth. If you can, speak to him, and if that is impossible for you, stop and remain before him. Don’t make any other effort.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 5,38-42.

Scripture: Matthew 5:38-42

38 "You have heard that it was said, `An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' 39 But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also; 40 and if any one would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well; 41 and if any one forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you.

The message

The 1 3th of June is an important day for all those who have a special devotion towards Saint Anthony. His original name was Fernando Martins of Bulhões, after seeing the simplicity of the Franciscan brothers, he joined this congregation and took the name as Antony. In the simplicity he dedicated his life to announce the word of God, faithful to its teachings, and accomplished various miracles. Till today he remains one of the popular saints.

In today’s gospel Jesus is asking us to be a perfect Christian, who carries the Christ in its fullness in listening the will of the Father and putting them in practice. It is in this accomplishment of the will of the Father that Jesus is asking us to go beyond from the visible realities of doing what is just and correct according to the rules and regulations, towards the invisible truth of acting just like God, by doing the maximum possible, that is to say, do everything in its perfection, as desired by God. Thus we will never react to what others do, conditioning our act according to the actions of others, but act as God has willed in us, as a liberated and free person, who doesn’t allow to be conditioned by the actions of others.
