The Body and Blood of Christ

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Luc 9,11b-17.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 9:11b-17.

Jesus spoke to the crowds about the kingdom of God, and he healed those who needed to be cured.
As the day was drawing to a close, the Twelve approached him and said, "Dismiss the crowd so that they can go to the surrounding villages and farms and find lodging and provisions; for we are in a deserted place here."
He said to them, "Give them some food yourselves." They replied, "Five loaves and two fish are all we have, unless we ourselves go and buy food for all these people."
Now the men there numbered about five thousand. Then he said to his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of (about) fifty."
They did so and made them all sit down.
Then taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing over them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.
They all ate and were satisfied. And when the leftover fragments were picked up, they filled twelve wicker baskets.

Homily

Today we celebrate the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ and the Church offers us the multiplication of bread, to meditate and contemplate. In today’s Gospel, Jesus and his disciples have the same concern: the people are hungry. It is important to note that time of getting close to the darkness. The darkness not only a real situation of time as presented in the gospel, but also in the heart of disciples, who look for solutions purely of human tendencies, forgetting the Light of the world present there amidst them. This is very much true even in the contemporary world that refuse to go beyond what is visible to the eyes.

Par consequence of this attitude, the disciples have failed to observe what is in the mind of Jesus and refused to consult with him, looking for divine solutions, depending on their abilities, rather inabilities. Jesus' concern is, how He can help them, feed them, and the disciples put the responsibility into the hand of the people. A God who loves us, will not leave us alone. He will take the initiative to come forward to help us. The Body and Blood of Christ is a wonderful gift that God has given to us, without being asked for.

By this wonderful gift, He makes an alliance with the humanity and gives us an opportunity to have a divine encounter, whenever we so desire to have. Thus He becomes accessible to all those seek Him. Jesus gives Himself and we receive Him. In this mutual encounter God establishes a perfect communion, and He asks us to do it ourselves, as He asked the disciples. "Give them some food yourselves."

Giving demands a basic knowledge of others and their needs. How can I give if I do not know their needs? Communion helps us to take the initiative to know each other and in this knowing it helps us to build a new community, a community that knows each member of the community, loves one another and prays together.

By sharing with us this Body and Blood, Christ makes us participate in his divinity. By His incarnation God participate in our humanity and the gift of the Body and Blood of Christ, He raises us to Him in holiness. Jesus comes to dwell in us and invites us to remain in him, as he remains in His Father. Communion gives us an opportunity to remain in Jesus, in a simple and concrete way. The feast of the Body and Blood of Christ invites us not only to participate in God's holiness, but also invites us to participate in the life of God, in the Trinitarian God.

The Christian faith is essentially a community and family oriented faith where we commemorate the death resurrection of the Lord together, personally and universally. The disciples wanted the people dispersed and search themselves for their needs, whereas Jesus wanted to bring them together. Christian community is called to build community and bring the people together. Unity is one of the important ingredients of Christian faith. Communion makes us one people gathered around the Lord's Table. Every time we partake of this sacrament, the divine presence is reaffirmed and we feel the true dwelling place of God in the human heart.

On this day, we pray, Lord, that the bread of your Word and of your Body is the food that allows us to become signs of hope for this world really needs. Stay with us for us to be witnesses and messengers of your love.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 10,32-45.

Scripture: Mark 10:32-45

32 And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them; and they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33 saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; 34 and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise." 35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." 36 And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" 37 And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." 38 But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" 39 And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Commentary of the day

Saint Ephrem (c.306-373), deacon in Syria, Doctor of the Church
Commentary on the Diatessaron, 20, 2-7 (cf. SC 121, p. 344f.)

"The Son of Man came... to give his life"

“If it is possible, let this cup pass from me” (Mt 26,39). Why did you rebuke Simon Peter when he said: “No such thing shall ever happen to you, Lord!” (Mt 16,22) when you yourself now say: “If it is possible, let this cup pass from me”? He well knew what he was saying to his Father and that it was indeed possible for the cup to pass from him, but he had come to drink it on behalf of all so that with this cup he might pay the debt that the deaths of prophets and martyrs could not pay... He who had described himself being put to death in the prophets and had foreshadowed the mystery of his death through the just, did not refuse to drink it when the time had come to bring this death to fulfilment. If he had not wanted to drink it but to push it aside he would not have compared his body to the Temple in the words: “Destroy this Temple and in three days I will raise it up” (Jn 2,19), nor would he have said to the sons of Zebedee: “Are you able to drink the cup that I shall drink?” and again: “There is a baptism with which I must be baptized” (Lk 12,50)...

“If it is possible, let this cup pass from me.” He said this because of the frailty he had put on, not in semblance but in reality. Because he had made himself small and had truly put on our weakness it was necessary for him to be afraid and shaken by his weakness. Having taken flesh, having put on weakness, eating when he was hungry, worn out by work, overcome by sleep, everything arising from the flesh had to happen when the time came for his death...

To comfort his disciples by his Passion Jesus felt what they felt. He took their fear on himself to show them, through his own likeness of soul, that we should not boast about death before we have undergone it. For if he who feared nothing was afraid and begged to be delivered even while knowing it to be impossible, how much more ought not the others to persevere in prayer before the temptation so as to be delivered from it when it came... He did not conceal his own fear so as to give courage to those who are afraid of death, that they might know that this fear does not lead to sin so long as they do not remain in it. “No, Father,” Jesus said, “but may your will be done: may I die to give life to many."

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 10,28-31.

Sois béni, Seigneur, toi qui m'as créée !

Scripture: Mark 10:28-31

28 Peter began to say to him, "Lo, we have left everything and followed you." 29 Jesus said, "Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. 31 But many that are first will be last, and the last first."

Commentary of the day

Thomas of Celano (c.1190-c.1260), biographer of Saint Francis and Saint Clare
Life of Saint Clare, §25-28

Leaving all to follow him

For forty years, to use the analogy made by Saint Paul (1Cor 9,24), Clare had now run the race in the stadium of very great poverty. She was drawing close to the goal of her heavenly vocation and to the reward promised to the victor... Divine Providence hastened to fulfil what it had in mind for Clare: Christ desired to bring his little, poor one into his royal palace at the close of her pilgrimage. She, on her part, longed with all the impulse of her desire... to behold, reigning on high in his glory, the Christ whose poverty she had imitated on earth...

All her daughters had gathered around their mother's bed... Then, speaking to herself, Claire said to her soul: “Go in all safety; you have a good guide for the road. Go, for he who created you has also sanctified you. He has always kept you and loved you with tender love as a mother loves her child. Blessed are you, O Lord, who have created me!” One of the Sisters asked her to whom she was talking. Clare answered: “To my blessed soul.” Her guide for the journey was not far off. Indeed, turning towards one of her daughters, she said: “Do you see what I can see? - The King of glory!”...

Blessed be her departure from this vale of sorrow, a departure that was for her the entry into the life of blessedness! As a reward for her fasts here below she now knows the joy that reigns at the table of the saints. In exchange for her rags and ashes she has entered into possession of the blessedness of the heavenly Kingdom where she is clothed in the robe of eternal glory.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 10,17-27.

Scripture: Mark 10:17-27

17 And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" 18 And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 19 You know the commandments: `Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.'" 20 And he said to him, "Teacher, all these I have observed from my youth." 21 And Jesus looking upon him loved him, and said to him, "You lack one thing; go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." 22 At that saying his countenance fell, and he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions.

23 And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it will be for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!" 24 And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." 26 And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, "Then who can be saved?" 27 Jesus looked at them and said, "With men it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God." rs and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.

Saint Basil (c.330-379), monk and Bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia, Doctor of the Church
Homily 7, on wealth; PG 31, 278

"At that statement... he went away sad"

The incident of the rich young man and those like him makes me think of that of a traveler who, wanting to visit a certain town, arrives at the foot of the walls, finds an inn there, goes down to it and, discouraged by the short distance still to do, loses all the benefit of the difficulties of his journey and prevents himself from visiting the beauties of the town. Such are those who keep the commandments but can't bear the idea of losing their goods. I know many people who fast, pray, do penance, and practise all sorts of works of piety very well, but who don't spend a cent on the poor. What good are their other virtues to them?

These won't enter the Kingdom of heaven, for “it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of heaven”. Clear words, and their author does not lie, but rare are those who let themselves be touched by them. “How will we live when we are stripped of everything?” is what they exclaim. “What sort of life will we lead when everything has been sold and there is no longer any property?” Don't ask me what deep design underlies God's commandments. He who made our laws also knows the art of reconciling the impossible with the law.

Amen

Today with the universal Church we celebrate the feast of the Trinity. It is important to look at this this mystery the progress of the revelation and the way and the method that the Church proposes to understand it from the life of Jesus. Jesus, in his incarnation and death on the cross we discovered his humanity, the humanity of man par excellence. By his resurrection and his apparitions after his resurrection we discovered not only his divinity, but also the Father who is in Him and how Jesus helps his disciples to understand the salvific plan of the Father in His death and resurrection. Through His constant insurance of the ONE to come and from the event of the feast of Pentecost we discovered the Holy Spirit who sanctifies us, teaches us, identifies us the Father and the Son, thus helps us to discover the mystery of the Trinity that we celebrate today.

To this day, the Trinity though revealed right from the creation of the world, in Jesus in its fullness and perfection, remains as a mystery. It is a mystery, because without the grace of God, we are not able to decode the divine revelation, though accessible to all those who desire and search to know the TRUTH. Since it is difficult and so complicated to our simple comprehension to know and understand the Trinity, it is logic that we start with the very little that we know.

Because the Father lives in the Son and the Holy Spirit is sent by the Son and the Father, it is sufficient to know only one person in the Trinity, because if we can recognize the Son, we will know the Father who dwells in Son, if we can recognize the Son and the Father, we will recognize the Holy Spirit, the One who teaches us the truth.

But the question is how to know the Father in Jesus? This is the same question that Philip asked the Lord. "Lord, show us the Father and that is enough. "And Jesus answered him, saying" who has seen me has seen the Father. "The people of the time did not reach to this high theological and mystical understanding of the UNION of the Trinity already existed in Jesus. And today the difficulty continues to disturb the human intelligence and curiosity which in its arrogance and humility to master this truth and penetrate in to the divine realities, particularly to our new Christian generation, to understand this mystery.

God created us in His image, so we have the quality of God already in us, by our human nature that God has put in human nature. To know God we must know the humanity because they bear in them the very image of God, but Jesus was God. How can know the other without being able to know our self? So, self-knowledge, is the path to know the humanity and obviously God. In Jesus, God is revealed in its simplicity, the most intimate possible. In perfect humanity of Jesus, is revealed the perfect divinity of God. It is the Holy Spirit who will enlighten us little by little this great mystery and truth.

Since the Trinitarian communion is a communion of love from which flows life, God is revealed and becomes visible to mankind in this human love. If we want to know God, we must learn to love one another, as THEY love themselves as represented by Jesus in his humanity, which is reachable and achievable to all who participate in His humanity. It is only in this human love that we discover the Trinitarian love and the love of God. That is why Jesus told us to keep his command and remain in his love. He said, "We shall come and will remain in them" in the plural, not in the singular. May our lives be inked, rooted in this divine communion, in the love that God shares with us. Amen

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 10,13-16.

Scripture: Mark 10:13-16

13 And they were bringing children to him, that he might touch them; and the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when Jesus saw it he was indignant, and said to them, "Let the children come to me, do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 15 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it." 16 And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands upon them.

Commentary of the day

Isaac the Syrian (7th century), monk near Mosul
Ascetical Discourses, 1st series, §19

“Whoever does not accept the reign of God like a little child shall not take part in it”

Do you, the smallest of all, want to find life? Keep faith and humility in your heart and there you will find compassion, help, those words that God will speak in your heart as well as He who keeps you and dwells close to you, both secretly and visibly. Do you want to discover what life gives? Walk on the path of simplicity. Do not claim to know anything before God. Faith follows simplicity but presumption follows subtlety of knowledge and detours in its thinking; it draws us away from God.

When you come before God in prayer, be very small in your thinking, like an ant,... like a stuttering child. Do not say anything before him that you claim to know, but approach God with the heart of a child. Go before him to receive the solicitude with which fathers watch over their very small children. It has been said: “The Lord guards the little children.” The one who is like a little child can approach a snake and the snake will not harm him... In its innocence the body of the person who is like a little child is such that the hidden providence, which watches over its fragile members, covers it with an invisible garment so that nothing can harm it.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 10,1-12.

Scripture: Mark 10:1-12

1 And he left there and went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan, and crowds gathered to him again; and again, as his custom was, he taught them. 2 And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" 3 He answered them, "What did Moses command you?" 4 They said, "Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to put her away." 5 But Jesus said to them, "For your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. 6 But from the beginning of creation, `God made them male and female.' 7 `For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8 and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder." 10 And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. 11 And he said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another, commits adultery against her; 12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery."

Commentary of the day

Vatican Council II
Dogmatic Constitution on the Church in the modern world, “Gaudium et Spes”, §48 (©Libreria editrice vaticana)

"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the Church and handed himself over for her" (Eph 5,25)

A man and a woman, who by their compact of conjugal love "are no longer two, but one flesh", render mutual help and service to each other through an intimate union of their persons and of their actions. Through this union they experience the meaning of their oneness and attain to it with growing perfection day by day. As a mutual gift of two persons, this intimate union and the good of the children impose total fidelity on the spouses and argue for an unbreakable oneness between them.
Christ the Lord abundantly blessed this many-faceted love, welling up as it does from the fountain of divine love and structured as it is on the model of His union with His Church (Eph 5,32). For as God of old made Himself present to His people through a covenant of love and fidelity, so now the Savior of men and the Spouse of the Church comes into the lives of married Christians through the sacrament of matrimony. He abides with them thereafter so that just as He loved the Church and handed Himself over on her behalf (Eph 5,25), the spouses may love each other with perpetual fidelity through mutual self-bestowal.
Authentic married love is caught up into divine love and is governed and enriched by Christ's redeeming power and the saving activity of the Church, so that this love may lead the spouses to God with powerful effect and may aid and strengthen them in sublime office of being a father or a mother. For this reason Christian spouses have a special sacrament by which they are fortified and receive a kind of consecration in the duties and dignity of their state. By virtue of this sacrament, as spouses fulfil their conjugal and family obligation, they are penetrated with the spirit of Christ, which suffuses their whole lives with faith, hope and charity. Thus they increasingly advance the perfection of their own personalities, as well as their mutual sanctification, and hence contribute jointly to the glory of God.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 9,41-50.

Scripture: Mark 9:41-50

41 For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ, will by no means lose his reward.42 "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung round his neck and he were thrown into the sea. 43 And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire.45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell. 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, 48 where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched. 49 For every one will be salted with fire. 50 Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its saltness, how will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another."

The message

It is important that we fix the philosophy of life. I begin my life in believing, since God is the fullness of Goodness, anything that comes from God has to be good. However all that is good need not be good for all. We all have different mission and different work to accomplish. Once the mission is chosen and finalised, the choice of life will be easier. We need not break our head to chose from good and bad, because the response is net and clear. We are called to choose what is the best for us among the many good presented or available to us.

It is in this process of discernment that Jesus is asking each and every one us to decide the path and avoid anything which hinders us, even some essential part of ourselves. And it is not easy. To discern what is best for us, we should know the finality of our life and the means that God has proposed to us. It is not good to beg on the street while keeping million in our bank. We should know what we have and what we lack. Thus a self-knowledge will help us to discern and chose better. Just like pruning a rose plant, we should learn to cut and spare for better fruit.

Let us not lose the saltiness and the light though little it may be that God has entrusted to us to accomplish His will. Though we are not working for reward, Jesus seems to propose to us that every little good gesture and act will never be forgotten.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 9,38-40.

Jésus répondit : « Ne l’en empêchez pas, car celui qui fait un miracle en mon nom ne peut pas, aussitôt après, mal parler de moi ;

Commentaire du jour

Vénérable Pie XII, pape de 1939 à 1958
Encyclique « Mystici Corporis Christi »

Scripture: John 10:1-10

1"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber; 2 but he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens; the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers." 6 This figure Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. 7 So Jesus again said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers; but the sheep did not heed them. 9 I am the door; if any one enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

Commentary of the day

Venerable Pius XII, Pope from 1939 to 1958
Encyclical “ Mystici Corporis Christi ”

"We tried to prevent him because he does not follow us."

Let us imitate the breadth of love of Jesus himself. For the Church, the Bride of Christ, is one; and yet so vast is the love of the divine Spouse that it embraces in His Bride the whole human race without exception. Our Savior shed His Blood precisely in order that He might reconcile men to God through the Cross, and might constrain them to unite in one body, however widely they may differ in nationality and race. True love of the Church, therefore, requires not only that we should be mutually solicitous one for another as members (Rm 12,5), sharing in their suffering (1Co 12,26), but likewise that we should recognize in other men, although they are not yet joined to us in the body of the Church, our brothers in Christ according to the flesh, called, together with us, to the same eternal salvation.

It is true, unfortunately, especially today, that there are some who extol enmity, hatred and spite as if they enhanced the dignity and the worth of man. Let us, however, while we look with sorrow on the disastrous consequences of this teaching, follow our peaceful King who taught us to love not only those who are of a different nation or race, (Lk 10,33f.) but even our enemies (Lk 6,27f.). While our heart overflows with the sweetness of the teaching of Saint Paul, the apostle of the Gentiles, we extol with him the length, and the breadth, and the height, and the depth of the charity of Christ (Eph 3,18) which neither diversity of race or customs can diminish, nor trackless wastes of the ocean weaken, nor wars, whether just or unjust, destroy.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 9,30-37.

Demonstrations, no.6 (SC 349)

Follow him who is the last of all and servant of all

My friend, let us take on the likeness of him who gives us life. Although he was rich, he made himself poor. Although he was exalted, he humbled his greatness. Although he dwelt in the heights, he had nowhere to lay his head. Although he is to come on the clouds, he mounted an ass to enter Jerusalem. Although he is God and Son of God, he bears the likeness of a slave.

He who is rest for every effort has been worn out by the difficulty of the way. He who is the spring that quenches thirst was thirsty and asked for water to drink. He who is the repletion that satisfies our hunger was hungry when he fasted in the desert to be tempted. He who is the unsleeping watchman fell asleep and lay down in the boat in the middle of the sea. He who is served in his Father’s tent allowed himself to be served at the hands of men. He who is the doctor of all the sick had his hands pierced by nails. He whose mouth spoke prudence was given gall to drink. He who did no wrong nor harmed anyone has been struck with blows and bore insult. He who gives life to all the dead surrendered himself to the death of the cross.

Our Lifegiver himself has given proof of all this humility; let us humble ourselves, my friends.
