Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 16,20-23a.

Scripture: John 16:20-23

20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is in travail she has sorrow, because her hour has come; but when she is delivered of the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father, he will give it to you in my name.

The message

In life we are tempted to choose the easy approach, avoiding anything unpleasant on the way. Jesus seems to propose to us to take the right way, accompanied by His guidance and support. He is assuring us that every difficult moment of life can be an occasion to grow and there is always a possibility of getting closer to inner peace and joy.

This world is not a model to be imitated in our march towards the perfection of the Joy of Christ. Their sentiments and feelings are depending on the appearance and visibility, whereas the Truth may tell us just the opposite. Our faith in Jesus and the belief of His second coming can be a guiding force to win over the present suffering and turning it into a way to the resurrection. Let us not hesitate to take harsh decisions, choose a difficult and narrow path, because Jesus will support a sincere and faithful soul.

Scripture: John 16:16-20

16 "A little while, and you will see me no more; again a little while, and you will see me." 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What is this that he says to us, `A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'; and, `because I go to the Father'?" 18 They said, "What does he mean by `a little while'? We do not know what he means." 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him; so he said to them, "Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, `A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.

The message

How can a sorrow can turn in to joy? It is just like a bitter pile that cures the sickness. The sorrow caused by separation in the emotional and sentimental attachment to Jesus, will however give way to the cognisance of the Truth of Jesus’ union with the Father, which will give us access to the Father of Jesus, through the descending of the Holy Spirit. There we will live in the Joy of the Lord, which overcomes all sort of human feelings and emotions, fully connected to the divine realities of life.

Like the disciples we too are much led by emotions and feelings than the truth, we allow ourselves to be animated by these sentiments. How many good and healthy relationships have broken because of mere ignorance of the Truth? Jesus by the death, resurrection and ascension helps us to understand the divine plan of salvation, the deep love of the Father. Without understanding this divine love, our Faith will get displaced without any foundation.

In this year of mercy we are called to have patience with others and with us too, when we don’t understand the events of life. Let us put our confidence in the Lord and He will transform all our present sorrows in to Joy, provided we remain faithful in His love.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 16,12-15.

Scripture: John 16:12-15

12 "I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

The message

Today Jesus is surprising us with a strange teaching pointing to us His cognisance on us and our incapacities. He knows our abilities and how to teach us. It is not easy to understand the divine realities. Thus our submission in humility to the grace will help us to open us more to the divine blessings, which will make us capable of understanding divine realities. How good we may try, if this grace is not given, we can’t understand the Word of God.

In the First reading we have a wonderful story in the life of Saint Paul. Though humanly he has failed to convince the people of Athens to believe in the resurrection, God has chosen among them Denys (yesterday was his feast day in orthodox churches) a member of the Areopagus Council (Athens high court), who will become the disciple of Paul, later Bishop of Athens, to announce the Good News. It is the marvellous work of the Lord and we have to surrender to His will, if we wish to do God’s will.

It is important to us today that we open our hearts and minds to this divine teaching, so that our intellect be able to understand divine mysteries. Only Holy Spirit can help us to see in human being the divine presence. To see God in all, we should live in God. Without the Holy Spirit, living in God is impossible. Let us prepare ourselves to receive the Holy Spirit.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 14,6-14.

DDB 1981, t. 2, p.103 rev. ; cf Bresard, 2000 ans A, p.140)

On voit l'homme Jésus Christ.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 14:6-14.
Jesus said to him, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him."
Philip said to him, "Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us."
Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works.
Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves.
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father.
And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.

The message

On this feast day of the Apostles we are confronted by the appearance and the truth. Jesus is aboding a philosophical and theological question. We need philosophy to understand theology. A good reasoning mind will understand deep theological truths. The disciples were so used with the humanity of Jesus, found very difficult to understand the divinity before the naked eyes.

We see the human bodies and from this visible physic we infer the invisible person who resides in this body. Many at time by seeing a beautiful body, hearing attractive words, pleasant exchanges of gestures, wonderful actions or deeds, marvellous inspirations and thoughts, we get lost from the real person. Thus we fall in to drastic and wrong judgements on the person.

Jesus is inviting each and every one of us to discover the divinity of Jesus in His humanity. Man par excellence is the visible presence of invisible divine reality. Thus by seeing Jesus, is seeing the very Father, the Creator of the universe. If only we understand this truth, we will treat every human being with dignity and respect, including our so called enemies. A believer will see God in all and all in God. As Christians we are called to live in Christ and Christ in us. People those who come closer to us should see the divine presence in us and they will in turn taste and witness the divine love and mercy through us.

Commentary of the day

Saint Hilary (c.315-367), Bishop of Poitiers, Doctor of the Church
On the Trinity, 7, 34-36

"Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us."

Jesus said: “If you know me, you know the Father too. From now on you know him and have seen him.” We see Jesus Christ, the man. The apostles had his outward appearance before their eyes, that is to say, his human nature, whereas God, who is without flesh of any kind, cannot be discerned in a wretched fleshly body. In what way, then, can it be said that to know him is to know the Father?

These unexpected words trouble the apostle Philip...; the weakness of his human mind makes him unable to understand so strange a statement... So, with the impetuousness allowed by familiarity and his faithfulness as an apostle, he questions his Master: “Lord, show us the Father, and we shall be satisfied!”... It isn't that he wants to look on the Father with his physical eyes, but he asks to have an understanding of the one whom he sees with his eyes. Since, seeing the Son in his human form, he fails to understand how, by this, he has seen the Father...

Then the Lord answers him: “Have I been so long with you, Philip, and still you do not know me?” He reproaches him for not realizing who he is... Why had no one recognized him when they had been seeking him so long? It was because, in order to recognize him, they had to recognize the divinity, the Father's nature, within him. Indeed, all the works he had done were properly God's works: walking on the water, commanding the winds, accomplishing things impossible to understand such as changing water into wine or multiplying the loaves... putting demons to flight, banishing sickness, bringing healing to bodily ills, correcting disabilities from birth, forgiving sins, restoring the dead to life. All these things are what he has done in the flesh and these are what allow him to call himself Son of God. Hence his reproaches and lamentation: because no one recognized through the mysterious reality of his human birth the divine nature which was accomplishing these miracles through the human nature the Son had assumed.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Jean 15,26-27.16,1-4a.

Scripture: John 15:26-16:4

26 But when the Counselor comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness to me; 27 and you also are witnesses, because you have been with me from the beginning. [John 16] 1 I have said all this to you to keep you from falling away. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues; indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. 3 And they will do this because they have not known the Father, nor me. 4 But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you of them. I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.

The message

Today’s teaching is focusing on the role of Holy Spirit during the moments of persecution. Jesus is helping the disciples to discover His spiritual presence in His physical absence, which is more important to the life than simply being with the Lord mere physically. Jesus knows well that if the disciples allow the Holy Spirit to accompany them and guide them, He will help them to discover the Truth of life, and this truth of life will give them the courage to stand before the calamities.

If many of us find difficult to remain in faith, it is because we are half backed cakes with a beautiful perfume, but not able to eat. We think that our faith is very deep, where us it is wavering. We think that we are doing the will of the Father, but in truth we are doing what is just and correct according to us, not exactly what the Lord has asked us to do.

There is an essential difference between our faith and of the disciples, because they did with certitude after knowing and confirming the will of the Father with the Holy Spirit and we confirm it after committing an act. Many of us though received the Faith, we still live in ignorance. Let us pray to the Holy Spirit to reveal us the TRUTH, the capacity to understand it and this truth will protect us particularly in our troubled times, falling away from the Lord.

Je vous parle ainsi, tant que je demeure avec vous ;

« Pourquoi me persécute-tu ?

Amen.

Scripture: John 14:23-29

23 Jesus answered him, "If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 He who does not love me does not keep my words; and the word which you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me. 25 "These things I have spoken to you, while I am still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, `I go away, and I will come to you.' If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I go to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place, you may believe.

Homily

Last Sunday we meditated on divine love and the glory of God. In this week we heard "at a time when Jesus passed from this world to the Father, preparing for a great departure of Jesus from this world. During these days we recalled memories of special moments lived by the Apostles with the Lord, especially around the resurrection to ascension. From an homme par excellence before resurrection, we discovered the Resurrected the divine person in Christ after the resurrection. From the Resurrected one, we are called to discover not only the divinity of Jesus, but also His perfect union with the Father. The Holy Spirit has led us to understand the sacred scriptures (the Cross and the Resurrection) and to grasp the mystery of salvation (God's presence in our life and the divine accompaniment.)

The Gospel of the day sums up the story of salvation, the divine accompaniment (love and God's dwelling) and our own approach to the house prepared by the Lord (I go to the Father.) Like the people of Israel, the first Christian community has felt the divine presence through the Apostles and learned to love each other just like Jesus has loved His disciples. Jesus was living in them. In the persecution, it is Christ who suffered with them. "Why do you persecute me?” was the question posed by the Lord to Saul. Their actions and words have testified to us their love for the Lord and the powerful and efficient divine presence. We are invited to relive this divine presence in our conversion and our constant renewal.

Every time a baptized is committed to fulfilling the will of God, puts into practice the Gospel values, faithfully keeps this new commandment of love, he embodies God’ presence in us. This is why St. Paul tells us that we are the temple of the Holy Spirit, the Body of Christ, and the Church of God. Jesus continues to offer them the unique sacrifice of the New Covenant and the Holy Spirit is at work in each member of the Body Which makes each and every member to have a filial cry, "Father, thy will be done. "

That is why the Church invites us to transform every human encounter as a divine encounter. God be central in our actions, in our words and in our being. If we are not able to transform the human encounter as a divine encounter, we cannot enjoy the peace that the Lord offers us today. This peace is a fruit of dialogue, listening, patience and basically a fruit of love and mercy.

Like the disciples who welcomed the pagan community, we have to open ourselves to a new frontier, to the peripheries of our society. It is not easy and it was never easy to the first Christian communities and we read it in the first reading. We must be guided by the Holy Spirit as they did. Without this openness to the Spirit of the Lord and the divine accompaniment, we risk putting God outside of us, and move the house of God far away from our reach.

The next Thursday we will celebrate the Ascension of the Lord Jesus announced in today’s gospel. This physical absence will help the disciple to forge another form of presence, united with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Together in love and by executing all that have being taught by the Lord, they will come closer to Jesus in faith and in their observance of His Word, they will show to the world their fidelity to the divine teaching. Just like the first disciples of the Lord and the first Christian communities, we too are not perfect, yet it is with us, with our poor means that the Lord wants to build a missionary church and committed to serving others. In this year of mercy, let us be merciful as our Father is merciful. Amen.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 15,18-21.

Scripture: John 15:18-21

18 "If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, `A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also. 21 But all this they will do to you on my account, because they do not know him who sent me.

The message

Today’s gospel message is quite frightening for the new disciples to accept the faith, because Jesus is warning them that they will meet the same end like Him. How can we take this responsibility willingly, knowing well that the end will be tragic?

Though it seems to be frightening, it is the way Jesus prepares His disciples for the worst. They have to be prepared for such occasion, to remain strong and courageous. Many at times, when be look back our past life, we understand that our own failures, difficult moments of life, our own disappointments and discouragements were transformed to our present time, as a moment of grace and blessings. Whzn look at the life of the disciples of Jesus, the assurance for the disciples is from the life of Jesus. Just like His Father has resurrected Jesus, He will never abandon us, will come to protect us and liberate us.

All that is expected us is that we remain faithful to the Gospel and announce what is demand from us. Just like the first disciples consulted their Master, like Jesus consulted His Father, we are asked to consult everything with Jesus before deciding on anything. Thus our acts and words will be really a divine act and our words will be lifesaving words.

Commentary of the day

Saint John-Paul II, Pope from 1978 to 2005
Homily for the ecumenical commemoration of the witnesses to the faith in the twentieth century on May 7, 2000 (© Libreria Editrice Vaticana)

“If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first”

“Whoever loves his life loses it and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life” (Jn 12:25)... They contain a truth which today’s world often scorns and rejects, making love of self the supreme criterion of life. But the witnesses to the faith, who also this evening speak to us by their example, did not consider their own advantage, their own well-being, their own survival as greater values than fidelity to the Gospel. Despite all their weakness, they vigorously resisted evil. In their fragility there shone forth the power of faith and of the Lord’s grace.

The precious heritage which these courageous witnesses have passed down to us is a patrimony shared by all the Churches and Ecclesial Communities... The ecumenism of the martyrs and the witnesses to the faith is the most convincing of all; to the Christians of the twenty-first century it shows the path to unity. It is the heritage of the Cross lived in the light of Easter: a heritage which enriches and sustains Christians as they go forward into the new millennium...

In the century and the millennium just begun may the memory of these brothers and sisters of ours remain always vivid. Indeed, may it grow still stronger! Let it be passed on from generation to generation, so that from it there may blossom a profound Christian renewal! Let it be guarded as a treasure of consummate value for the Christians of the new millennium, and let it become the leaven for bringing all Christ’s disciples into full communion! ... I pray to the Lord that the cloud of witnesses which surrounds us (He 12:1) will help all of us who believe to express with no less courage our own love for Christ, for him who is ever alive in his Church: as he was yesterday, and is today, and will be tomorrow and for ever!

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Luc 10,38-42.

Scripture: John 15:12-17

12 "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 This I command you, to love one another.

Dorotheus of Gaza (c.500-?), monk in Palestine
Instructions, VI, 76-78 (SC 92)

Love of God and neighbour

The more we are united to our neighbour, the more we are united to God. So that you can understand the meaning of this saying I'm going to give you an image taken from the Fathers: imagine a circle drawn on the ground, that is to say a line drawn into a round shape with a compass, having a centre. We refer to the middle of the circle as being the exact centre. Now give your attention to what I am saying. Imagine that this circle is the world, its centre is God and each radius represents different ways or kinds of lifestyle. When the saints, desiring to draw near to God, move towards the middle of the circle, then to the degree to which they penetrate further into its interior they draw closer to each other even as they draw closer to God. The closer they draw to God, the closer they draw to each other; and the closer they draw to each other, the closer they draw to God.

From this you will understand that the same thing applies conversely when we turn away from God to withdraw outside the circle: then it becomes obvious that, the more we withdraw from God, the more we withdraw from each other, and the more we withdraw from each other, the more we also withdraw from God..

Such is the nature of charity. To the extent that we stand outside and do not love God, to the same extent each one of us stands apart with regard to their neighbor. But if we love God, then insofar as we come closer to God through our love for him, we also participate in love of neighbor to the same extent. And insofar as we are united to our neighbor we are equally so to God.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 15,9-11.

Scripture: John 15:9-11

9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

Commentary of the day

Saint Anselm (1033-1109), monk, bishop, doctor of the Church
Proslogion, 26 (©trans. Benedicta Ward)

"I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete"

My God, I pray that I may so know you and love you
that I may rejoice in you.
And if I may not do so fully in this life,
let me go steadily on to the day when I come to that fullness.
Let the knowledge of you increase in me here, and there let it come to its fullness.
Let your love grow in me here, and there let it be fulfilled,
so that here my joy may be in a great hope,
and there in full reality.

Lord, you have commanded, or rather advised us,
to ask by your Son,
and you have promised that we shall receive “that our joy may be full” (Jn 16,24).
That which you counsel through our “wonderful counsellor” (Is 9,5)
is what I am asking for, Lord.
Let me receive that which you promised through your truth,
“that my joy may be full”.
God of truth, I ask that I may receive,
so that my joy may be full.

Meanwhile, let my mind meditate on it,
let my tongue speak of it,
let my heart love it,
let my mouth preach it,
let my soul hunger for it, my flesh thirst for it,
and my whole being desire it,
until I enter the joy of my Lord (Mt 25,21),
who is God, one and triune, blessed forever. Amen.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 15,1-8.

Scripture: John 15:1-8

1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine dresser. 2 Every branch of mine that bears no fruit, he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already made clean by the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If a man does not abide in me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples.

The message

Though the vine and the branch is my favourite theme to share with you all, I would like to share with you on ‘abide in me.’ When Jesus says abide in Him, it is in His own image, as He abide in His Father. In Him we have already a model to imitate.

Abiding in Him is, being resourced by Jesus and by His words. Just like Jesus who lived in the Father, doing and accomplishing the will of the Father, it is by doing the will of Jesus and accomplishing all that Jesus asks us to do, we can abide in Jesus.

Just like a branch which is not connected to the vine can’t give fruit, we too, if not connected to Jesus can’t give fruit. It is not enough to be close to Jesus, not enough to know Jesus, not enough to hear His words, we should learn to live by Him and in Him, and learn to give fruit according to this resource, the divine fruit, as God wills.

Since prayer is a dialogue, in this union we will ask only what we need to accomplish the will of the Father. The Lord who has entrusted to us a mission, has given already all that we need to accomplish His will. Thus before we could dare to ask, it is already received, thus asking will lose the merit and the sense. It is by our love that we will be identified as disciples of Jesus.
