Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 14,1-6.

Scripture: John 14:1-6

1 "Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way where I am going." 5 Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?" 6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me."

Commentary of the day

Saint Augustine (354-430), Bishop of Hippo (North Africa) and Doctor of the Church
Sermon 142

“No one comes to the Father but through me”

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” With these words, Christ seems to be telling us: “Which road are you going to take? I am the way. Where do you want to go? I am the truth. Where do you want to live? I am the life.” So let us walk with great security on the way; and let us fear the traps that lie away from the path, for the enemy does not dare to attack on the way. The way is Christ. But away from the way, the enemy lays his traps…

Our way is Christ in his humility. Christ, the truth and the life, is Christ in his grandeur, his divinity. If you walk on the way of humility, you will come to the Most High. If in your weakness, you do not despise humility, you will remain full of strength in the Most High. Why did Christ take the path of humility? It was because of your weakness that was like an insurmountable obstacle. Such a great doctor came to you so as to free you from it. You could not go to him; he came to you. He came to teach you humility, the way of return, for pride is what prevents us from returning to the life it caused us to lose…

So Jesus, who has become our way, calls out to us: “Enter through the narrow gate.” (Mt 7:13) We may try to enter, but the swelling of pride prevents us. Let us accept the remedy of humility, let us drink this bitter but salutary medicine… The person who is swollen with pride asks: “How will I be able to enter?” Christ answers us: “I am the way; enter through me. I am the gate (Jn 10:7), why look elsewhere?” He made himself everything for you so that you might not get lost, and he tells you: “Be humble, be gentle.” (Mt 11:29)

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 13,16-20.

Commentaire du jour

Sainte Thérèse de l'Enfant Jésus (1873-1897), carmélite, docteur de l'Église
Manuscrit autobiographique B, 2v°-3v°

Scripture: John 13:16-20

16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. 18 I am not speaking of you all; I know whom I have chosen; it is that the scripture may be fulfilled, `He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.' 19 I tell you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives any one whom I send receives me; and he who receives me receives him who sent me."

Commentary of the day

Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus (1873-1897), Carmelite, Doctor of the Church
Manuscript B, 2vo-3vo (trans. John Clarke, ©ICS publications)

"Whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me."

To be your Spouse, O Jesus, to be a Carmelite, and by my union with you to be a Mother of souls, should not this suffice me? And yet it is not so. No doubt these three privileges sum up my true vocation: Carmelite, spouse, mother, and yet I feel within me other vocations… I feel the need and the desire of carrying out the most heroic deeds for you, O Jesus… In spite of my littleness, I would like to enlighten souls as did the Prophets and Doctors. I have the vocation of the Apostle. I would like to travel over the whole earth to preach your name and to plant your glorious Cross on infidel soil. But, O my Beloved, one mission alone would not be sufficient for me. I would want to preach the Gospel on all the five continents simultaneously and even to the most remote isles. I would be a missionary, not for a few years only but from the beginning of creation until the consummation of the ages…

O my Jesus! What is your answer to all my follies? Is there a soul more little, more powerless than mine? Nevertheless, even because of my weakness, it has pleased you, O Lord, to grant my little, childish desires and you desire, today, to grant other desires that are greater than the universe… I understood that love comprised all vocations, that love was everything, that it embraced all times and places… in a word, that it was eternal!… My vocation, at last I have found it… my vocation is Love!

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 12,44-50.

En ce temps-là, Jésus s’écria : « Celui qui croit en moi, ce n’est pas en moi qu’il croit, mais en Celui qui m’a envoyé ;
Car ce n’est pas de ma propre initiative que j’ai parlé : le Père lui-même, qui m’a envoyé, m’a donné son commandement sur ce que je dois dire et déclarer ;

Scripture: John 12:44-50

44 And Jesus cried out and said, "He who believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. 45 And he who sees me sees him who sent me. 46 I have come as light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. 47 If any one hears my sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 He who rejects me and does not receive my sayings has a judge; the word that I have spoken will be his judge on the last day. 49 For I have not spoken on my own authority; the Father who sent me has himself given me commandment what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has bidden me."

The message

Living in darkness is living in ignorance. Jesus is here to bring light on the divine truth about His origin and helps us to remove our ignorance about his divinity and the source of His Words and deeds. Since Jesus is sent by the Father, His Words are Words of the Father. He thus assures us the divine mercy, the pardon and the love of the Father. Jesus reminds us very often that He is sent by the Father, doing the will of the Father, and the Father and He are ONE.

It is in this unity and the mission that our Christian life finds its foundation. Every baptised is called and sent by Christ in to this world for a particular mission. If we keep this eternal truth and mission in our hearts and minds, we will choose only divine words and actions in our daily life. Our words, acts and authority will find its root in Christ and in His mercy and love. Just as Jesus consults His Father, we will consult and verify every movement of life with life of Jesus and de facto we will become Christ for our brothers and sister.

Thus if we are rejected or persecuted, we will never be disappointed or discouraged, because, it’s not we who are rejected, but Christ who has sent us is rejected. In these difficult time, we will pray for these people and we will be able to love them. If we are hurt or discouraged in our mission, it is either we are not sent by the Father, or we are not aware the representing aspect of Christian life. Just like Jesus who has represented His Father without losing His own identity, we are called to represent Jesus without losing our own identity. Every Christ is sent by Christ and is missionary by the very nature of his or her name.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 10,22-30.

Scripture: John 10:22-30

22 It was the feast of the Dedication at Jerusalem; 23 it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. 24 So the Jews gathered round him and said to him, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly." 25 Jesus answered them, "I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness to me; 26 but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; 28 and I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish, and no one shall snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. 30 I and the Father are one."

The message

The last Sunday we have contemplated on the send part of today’s gospel and yesterday we have meditated on Jesus not only as the Shepherd but also the door which gives access to the Father. It is not only through Jesus and through His direction that we will know God, but essentially in Him, because He is the Door to enter in to God: “I and the Father are ONE.” Thus as ordinary human being, if we are able to understand the humanity of Jesus, in its fullness, we can easily understand the divinity of Jesus, which will help us to understand the Father, who is in Jesus’ divinity.

Looking at the persecution of the disciples of Jesus in Jerusalem which dispersed the disciples to other region with force and menace, for which we may regret then, but while contemplating the same menace we discover today with great joy, the means though painful then, today have given multiple conversion in this pagan world, where the disciples of Christ were called for the first time in the history of the Church as Christians.

There is nothing hidden in the wonderful work of the Holy Spirit in the spreading of the Good News. While praying for the Christian brothers persecuted in different part of the world, let us not forget that the grain buried and died will give 100 fold fruit. To have this fruit we should allow the Holy Spirit work in us and do all that is inspired by the Holy Spirit. As Jesus who feels that He is in the Father, we should too fell that we are in Christ. Without this unity in the Trinity, we can’t produce the fruit desired by the Father.

Commentary of the day

Saint Hilary (c.315-367), Bishop of Poitiers, Doctor of the Church
De Trinitate II, 8

“The Father and I are one.”

The Father is who he is, and we must believe that. As for the Son, our mind gets discouraged in trying to reach him and with every word we hesitate to make it heard. For he is begotten of the One who is not begotten, the only-begotten of the one who is the One and Only, truth come forth from truth, the living born of the living, the perfect one who comes from the perfect one, power from power, wisdom from wisdom, glory from glory, “the image of the invisible God” (Col 1:15)…

How shall we understand the only Son’s being begotten by the One who is not begotten?… This begetting is not a break or a division…: “The Father is in me and I am in the Father.” (Jn 10:38) He is not adopted, for the Son is the true Son of God and says: “Whoever sees me sees the Father.” (Jn 14:9) He did not come into existence like other beings, obeying a command, for… he has life in himself, like the one who begot him has life in himself (Jn 5:26)… The one who comes from the perfect One is perfect, since the one who possesses everything gave him everything. The Father and the Son each possess the secret of that birth.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 10,1-10.

Scripture: John 10:1-10

1"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber; 2 but he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens; the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers." 6 This figure Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. 7 So Jesus again said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers; but the sheep did not heed them. 9 I am the door; if any one enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

Commentary of the day

Saint Clement of Alexandria (150- c.215), theologian
The Instructor, 9,83 f.

“I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly”

Sick, we truly stand in need of the Saviour; having wandered, of one to guide us; thirsty, of the fountain of life; dead, we need life; sheep, we need a shepherd; we who are children need a tutor, while all of humanity stands in need of Jesus...

You may learn, if you will, the crowning wisdom of the all-holy shepherd and tutor, who is all-mighty and the Word of the Father, when he presents himself using the image of the Shepherd of the sheep. He is also the tutor of little children. He says therefore through Ezekiel, in his discourse to our forefathers, setting before them a description of his solicitude: "The lame I will bind up, and those who are sick I will heal, and those that have wandered I will bring back; and I will feed them in the pastures on my holy mountain." (Ez 34:16).... Master, lead us to your own pastures of righteousness; you who are our tutor, feed us in the pastures on your holy mountain, the Church, which towers aloft above the clouds, which touches heaven. "And I will be their Shepherd and remain among them” he says, (Ez 34:12)... He wishes to save my flesh by enveloping it in the robe of immortality... "They shall call me," he says, "and I will say, here I am." (Is 58:9)...

Such is our tutor, good and righteous. He says, " I did not come to be served but to serve " (Mt 20:28). That is why he is shown in the Gospel to be "wearied," (Jn 4:5) because he toils for us, and promises "to give his life as a ransom for many." (Mt 20:28) And he says that only the good shepherd acts in this way. Generous, therefore, is he who gives for us the greatest of all gifts, his own life; generous, and loving; when he might have been Lord, he wished to be our brother; and so good was he that he died for us.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 10,27-30.

Amen.

Gospel JN 10:27-30

Jesus said:
“My sheep hear my voice;
I know them, and they follow me.
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.
No one can take them out of my hand.
My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all,
and no one can take them out of the Father’s hand.
The Father and I are one.”

Homily

Today we celebrate Jesus the good shepherd. In today’s gospel Jesus tells us that He knows the sheep and the sheep listen. It is with this knowing of God and in this listening of the Word of God that Jesus invites us to follow Him, our eternal Shepherd. To follow, we must listen and hear. We will hear Him better in silence. It is in silence and inner peace of the person that the Lord speaks to us. If we do not have this silence and inner peace, we cannot hear the word of God, because we will be occupying ourselves like Martha in little important things. The silence and inner peace is a fruit of confidence and our rootedness in God, like a branch that attaches to the vine. If Jesus could live His life in peace and in love, it is because He was in God. "The Father and I are One. "Jesus was listening to his Father in every moment of life, in miracle and before the Cross, for example. Humanly, it is in this listening, and in fulfilling the will of His Father Jesus was united by excellence in His Father. All that He said and did were fruit of this union with the Father. He desires that His disciples too be united with the Father and that they may produce much fruit.

In this contemporary world where we are, we are confronted by this amazing fact: nobody wants to listen or follow the other. Students no longer listen their teachers and teachers are loosing their respect and credibility in their faculties. Children listen neither their parents nor family elders. Grandparents instead of remaining the pinnacle in the process of family decision, they are alone or isolated in the families of the day. We know that the righteous and wise man would like to be guided by others to live his life in truth and joy. A wild man only listens to his feelings and emotions. He allows himself to lead astray by impressions than the truth. He will seek a freedom without responsibility, a false joy that eludes him forever.

The question now is, do we know our Shepherd and hear His word as Jesus announced in today’s gospel? Since our God is merciful, His words are filled with mercy. In this year of mercy, as Christians, we must inherit this divine mercy as our own identity. Let us make mercy and love as the rule of life.

In this day of vocation, let us pray for vocation and all those missionaries those have the courage to follow Jesus in announcing the Word of God. We need missionaries, missionaries of divine mercy. Let there be 'thousands of real and concrete action' in our family, in our society, says Holy Father in his exhortation 'The joy of love'. This love which originates in divine love, can fertilize and multiply in the daily application, only if we put our heart and mind to accomplish the Father's will.

Christ who is in God shows us divine mercy in Him. On this day we thank Him for the hope and joy that He has enriched in us. He will never allow ourselves to perish. Those who listens to Him and put His word in practice, He will protect them from the evil doers. This assurance and hope makes us a special being and we in turn become as porters and messengers of this divine mercy throughout our lives. Let us never forget to translate this message by our personalised engagement. While Jesus remains our Shepheard, it is important that we represent Jesus be the same Shepheard who knows the sheep. Many evil is done because of ignorance. Let us try to learn and discover the beauty of person in each and every one of us, as Jesus Himself sees us, as a good Shepheard who knows His sheep and loves them. Shall we be that good Shepheard to our brothers and sisters? Amen.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 6,60-69.

» (Ps 94,8)

Scripture: John 6:60-69

60 Many of his disciples, when they heard it, said, "This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?" 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at it, said to them, "Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending where he was before? 63 It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you that do not believe." For Jesus knew from the first who those were that did not believe, and who it was that would betray him. 65 And he said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father." 66 After this many of his disciples drew back and no longer went about with him. 67 Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you also wish to go away?" 68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God."

The message

What is that word of Jesus that was inacceptable to the disciples who were following Jesus? Jesus was speaking of Eucharist and affirming that this spiritual nourishment is from heaven. People who saw in Jesus the Master who will lead them to the victory against the roman empire, who longed to have a part with His Kingdom, failed to understand not only the teaching of Jesus, but also His love for the humanity. Without this basic understanding, every Word of Jesus will be always difficult to put in to practice.

Today Jesus is asking each and every one of us, “Do you also wish to go away?”, because we don’t understand His love and His teaching has become untenable to our human capacity. Even today, His words have greater value not only to us, the believers, but also to the non-believers. There are many non-believers, who welcome gladly this divine teaching and try their level best to put into practice.

We who carry in us Christ by our name, should make His teachings as the rule of life. Just like Jesus who was merciful to the disciples who have abandoned Him, let us learn to have the same approach to our enemies and fall back to Jesus for our nourishment. Let the proclamation of saint Peter be of ours. Let us say to ourselves again and again what Peter has said to the Lord: "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God."

Commentary of the day

Saint Bernard (1091-1153), Cistercian monk and doctor of the Church
Diverse Sermons, no. 5, on “Habbakuk”

“Do you want to leave me too?”

In the Gospel we read that when the Lord began to preach and, in the mystery of his body given as food, to instruct his disciples about the need to participate in his suffering, some said: “This word is harsh”, and they stopped going with him. But when Jesus asked his disciples if they also wanted to leave him, they answered: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

In the same way I tell you, brothers, even in our day, for some the words of Jesus are “spirit and life” and they follow him. But for others, they seem harsh, so much so that they look elsewhere for some poor consolation. For “Wisdom raises her voice in the open squares” (Prov 1:20) and, to be more precise, on “the road that is wide and clear and leads to damnation” (cf. Mt 7:13), in order to call those who have gone that way. A Psalm says: “Forty years I stayed close to that generation, and I said: They are a people of erring heart.” (cf. Ps 95:10) “One thing God said” (Ps 62:12): one thing, yes, because his Word is one, uninterrupted and perpetual. He invites sinners to enter into their heart, because that is where he lives and where he speaks… “Oh, that today you would hear his voice: ‘Harden not your hearts…’” (Ps 95:7-8) And in the Gospel we read almost the same words: “My sheep hear my voice.” (Jn 10:27) “You are his people, the sheep of his pasture, if today you hear his voice.” (cf. Ps 95:8)

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 6,52-59.

Scripture: John 6:52-59

52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" 53 So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; 54 he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. 56 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me.

Commentary of the day

Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross [Edith Stein] (1891-1942), Carmelite, martyr, co-patron of Europe
The Prayer of the Church

“The man who feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.”

Christ is the way that leads to interior life and to the choirs of the blessed who sing the eternal Sanctus. Christ’s blood is the curtain in the Temple through which we penetrate into the Holy of Holies of divine life (Heb 9:11f.; 10:20). In baptism and the sacrament of penance, he purifies us of sin, he opens our eyes to the eternal light, he opens our ears to perceive the divine Word, he opens our lips so that we begin to sing the song of praise, so that we pray the prayer of reconciliation, of petition, of thanksgiving; and all those prayers are nothing but various forms of the one adoration…

But it is above all the sacrament in which Christ is personally present, which makes us members of his body. By participating in the sacrifice and in the sacred meal, by being nourished with the flesh and blood of Jesus, we ourselves become his flesh and his blood. And only when we are members of his body, and to the extent to which we are that in truth, his Spirit can give us life and reign in us… We become members of the body of Christ “not only through love…, but also really and truly by being one with his flesh. That is realized through the food he gave us in order to prove to us his desire for us. That is why he lowered himself even to the point of coming to us, and that he formed his own body in us, so that we might be one, as the body is united with the head.” (St. John Chrysostom) As members of his body, animated by his Spirit, we offer ourselves in sacrifice “through him, with him and in him,” and we unite our voices to the eternal thanksgiving.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 6,44-51.

Au désert, vos pères ont mangé la manne, et ils sont morts ;

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 6:44-51.

Jesus said to the crowds: "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day.
It is written in the prophets: 'They shall all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me.
Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.
I am the bread of life.
Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died;
this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."

The message

The faith is purely a gift from God. To some it is given directly that in everything they see the presence of God and to other it is not given, thus they struggle to see God and His presence in this world. Those who have received this grace of Faith, much is expected from them. Those who haven’t received this Faith, they are called however to live their life in love and charity, which will give them the same fruit of salvation, without any difference. God who sees and scrutes the heart, knows the purity of mind and will help them to discover His presence in this world.

Those of us who have welcomed the Faith should not only admire the divine bread in Jesus, particularly in the Eucharist, but live it in its perfection: love and pardon. It is in this perfection of our love for God and to our neighbours which expresses par excellence in the forgiveness that Jesus will help us to see this merciful and loving God in everything. In consequence of this identification of the immense presence of God in everything, we transform each and every human encounter as divine encounter. He who has seen the Father, will reveal to us in these divine encounters, this divine presence in our personal life.

Saint Teresa of Avila (1515-1582),

Carmelite, Doctor of the Church 'The Book of her Life', Chapter 12

“They shall all be taught by God”

“When the Lord suspends the intellect and causes it to stop, He Himself gives it that which holds its attention and makes it marvel; and without reflection it understands more in the space of a Creed than we can understand with all our earthly diligence in many years. Trying to keep the soul’s faculties busy and thinking you can make them be quiet is foolish…

Many years passed by in which I read a lot of things and didn’t understand anything of what I read. For a long time, even though God favored me, I didn’t know what words to use to explain His favors; and this was no small trial. In a way amazing to me, His Majesty when He desires teaches me everything in a moment.

One thing I can truthfully say: although I spoke with many spiritual persons who wanted to explain what the Lord was giving me so that I would be able to speak about it, my dullness was truly so great that their explanations benefited me neither little nor much. Or maybe, since His Majesty has always been my Master, it was the Lord’s desire that I have no one else to thank. May He be blessed forever because it is very disconcerting for me to speak in all truth about His favors. Without my desiring or asking … , God gave me in a moment completely clear understanding so that I knew how to explain His favor in a way that amazed me more than it did my confessors; for I understood better than they my own dullness…

Once again I counsel that it is very important for the spirit not to ascend unless the Lord raise it up. What this statement means is quite apparent.

to do for You alone

what we know You want us to do,

and always

to desire what pleases You.

Thus, inwardly cleansed,

interiorly enlightened,

and inflamed by the fire of the Holy Spirit,

may we be able to follow

in the footprints of Your beloved Son,

our Lord Jesus Christ.

And, by Your grace alone,

may we make our way to You,

Most High,

Who live and rule

in perfect Trinity and simple Unity,

and are glorified

God all-powerful

forever and ever.

Amen.
