Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 21,15-19.

Scripture: John 21:15-19

15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." 16 A second time he said to him, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep." 17 He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. 18 Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go." 19 (This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) And after this he said to him, "Follow me."

Commentary of the day

Saint John Chrysostom (c.345-407), priest at Antioch then Bishop of Constantinople, Doctor of the Church
Homily 88 on Saint John's Gospel; PG 59, 477

“ A good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep ” (Jn 10,11)

That which most of all brings good will from on high is tender care for our neighbor. Which is what Christ required of Peter. For when they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter : “ 'Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these ?' And he said to him : 'Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.' And Jesus said to him : 'Feed my lambs.' ” Now why, passing over the others, does he speak to Peter on these matters ? It was because Peter was the chosen one of the apostles, the mouthpiece for the disciples, the leader of their band ; and that is also why Paul went on one occasion to enquire of him rather than of the others (Gal 1,18). To assure Peter that he should take heart and that his denial is done away with, Jesus now gives him the first place among his brethren. He makes no allusion to his denial nor humiliates him on account of what is past. “ If you love me, ” he says, “ stand at the head of your brethren ; and prove now the ardent love for me that you have always so joyfully shown. The life that you said you would lay down for me, now give for my sheep ”...

But Peter was troubled by the thought that he might imagine himself to be loving them while not really loving. 'Just as I was formerly so sure of myself and confident,' he thought, 'so now I am ashamed.' But Jesus questioned him three times and three times gave him the same charge. Thus he showed him what value he gave to caring for his lambs, because this is what gives greatest proof of our love for him.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 17,20-26.

Scripture: John 17:20-26

20 "I do not pray for these only, but also for those who believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory which you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to behold my glory which you have given me in your love for me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, the world has not known you, but I have known you; and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made known to them your name, and I will make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them."

The message

This wonderful prayer for the unity of the Christian community does present to us the importance that Jesus accords to the unity of His Church. This unity is the best way of witnessing the resurrected life in Christ. Many of us are not able to witness this unity, because it demands forgiveness, mercy, love and acceptances of the other as they are. These qualities can be retained in us or inculcated in our being permanently, only if we learn to live in Christ as Christ was living in His Father, humanly and divinely. It is through and in this humanity of Jesus we participate in the divinity of the Father. Thus the more we imitate the humanity of Jesus, the closer are we in the divinity of Jesus. By consequence of this closeness, we will participate in our limitedness, in the ONENESS of Jesus and the Father, and WE in them.

The glory of Jesus was living in the Father and the Father in Him. De facto, our glory will be the same, we in Jesus and Jesus in us. Thus in Jesus we will be in the Father and Father in us. It is in this perfect union that a Christian will be able to witness the resurrection, and this witness will be in the joy and happiness which flows from his life.

Commentary of the day

Isaac of Stella (?-c.1171), Cistercian monk
Sermon 42 for the Ascension

“So that your love for me may live in them, and I may live in them”

Just as the head and the body of a person make one and the same person, so the son of the Virgin and his members, the chosen ones, make one and the same person and one single Son of Man. This is the total and complete Christ, the head and the body, of which Scripture speaks. Yes, all the members together form one single body, which with its head, constitutes the one and only Son of Man who, with the Son of God, constitutes the one and only Son of God, just as he together with God constitutes one single God. Thus the entire body, with its head, is Son of Man and Son of God, and consequently God. Whence this word: “That all may be one as you, Father, are in me, and I in you; I pray that they may be [one] in us.” That is why, in conformity with this frequent affirmation of Scripture, the body does not exist without the head, nor does the head exist without the body, any more than the head and the body exist without God. That is the total Christ…

Thus the believers, the spiritual members of Christ, can all say in truth that they are what he himself is, which is to say, the Son of God and God. But what he is by nature, they are as associated members; what he is in fullness, they are through participation. In short, if he is the Son of God because of his origin, his members are sons of God… through adoption, according to what the apostle Paul said: “You have received a spirit of adoption through which we cry out, ‘Abba!’ (that is, ‘Father’).” (Rom 8:15) With this Spirit, “he empowered them to become children of God” (Jn 1:12), so that, according to the teaching of “the first-born of many brothers” (Rom 8:29), they might learn to say: “Our Father in heaven.” (Mt 6:9)

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 17,11b-19.

11 And now I am no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me; I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15 I do not pray that you should take them out of the world, but that you should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you did send me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be consecrated in truth.

Commentary of the day

Saint Augustine (354-430), Bishop of Hippo (North Africa) and Doctor of the Church
Sermons on St John's Gospel, no.107

"I speak this in the world so that they may share my joy completely"

When he had said to his Father: “And now I will no longer be in the world...; I am coming to you” (Jn 17,11), our Lord recommended to his Father those who were about to be deprived of his physical presence: “Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given to me.” As man, Jesus prays to God for the disciples he has received from God. But note what follows: “So that they may be one just as we are.” He does not say: That they may be one with us, or: So that they and we together may be one thing just as we are one, but he says: “That they may be one just as we are.” That they may be one in their nature just as we are one in ours. The truth is that these words imply that Jesus spoke as having the same divine nature as his Father, as he says elsewhere: “The Father and I are one,” (Jn 10,30). According to his human nature he had said: “My Father is greater than I, “ (Jn 14,28), but since God and man form one and the same person in him, we understand that he is man because he prays and understand him to be God because he is one thing with the one to whom he prays...

“But now I am coming to you. I speak this in the world so that they may share my joy completely.” As yet he has not left the world; he is still there; but since he is shortly going to leave it, he is no longer in it, so to speak. But what is that joy with which he wants his disciples to be filled? This he has already explained a little before, when he said: “That they may be one as we are.” Concerning this joy, which belongs to him and which he has given to them, he foretells to them the perfect fulfillment and that is why he speaks about it “in the world”. This joy is the peace and happiness of the world to come and, to gain it, we must live in the present world with self-restraint, justice and devotion.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 17,1-11a.

Bienheureux Guerric d'Igny (v. 1080-1157), abbé cistercien
Sermon pour l'Ascension, 1-2 : PL 185, 153-155 (trad. Orval rev. ; cf SC 202, p. 273).

1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work which you gave me to do; 5 and now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory which I had with you before the world was made. 6 "I have manifested your name to the men whom you gave me out of the world; they were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you; 8 for I have given them the words which you gave me, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I am praying for them; I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours; 10 all mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 And now I am no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Blessed Guerric of Igny (c.1080-1157), Cistercian abbot
Sermon for the Ascension, 1-2 : PL 185, 153-155 (©Cistercian publications, 1971)

"When the hour came for Jesus to pass from this world to his Father..., he prayed thus"

This was the prayer on the lips of our Lord on the eve of his passion. But it is not unreasonable to accommodate it to the day of his Ascension, when he was about to depart from the “little children” (Jn 13:33) he was then commending to his Father. In heaven he has created a multitude of angels; there he rules over them, teaches them. On earth it was a puny “little flock” (Lk 12:32) of disciples he gathered about him. They were to be taught by his presence in the flesh until their understanding had increased sufficiently for them to be capable of receiving the direction of the Holy Spirit. Thus it was that the Master loved his little ones with a great love, for he had weaned them from the love of the world and saw them, putting all hopes of the world aside, place all their hope in him. For as long as he desired to be with them in the flesh he did not readily manifest his love for them; or if he did, he did not show it to any great extent. Rather than intimacy he had to show that reserve which became a Master and a Father.

But when the time was come for him to leave them, he seemed to be overcome by his tender love for them so that he was no longer able to dissimulate his wealth of affection… That is why the Apostle writes: "Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end" (Jn 13:1). On that day he poured out on his friends almost the full power of his love before he himself was poured out like water for those same friends (Ps 21[22]:15). He handed over to them the sacrament of his body and blood; instituted it for them to celebrate in their turn. Was it his marvelous power or his more marvelous love that enabled him to find this new way of remaining with them as a consolation for his departure?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 16,29-33.

29 His disciples said, "Ah, now you are speaking plainly, not in any figure! 30 Now we know that you know all things, and need none to question you; by this we believe that you came from God." 31 Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? 32 The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, every man to his home, and will leave me alone; yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said this to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."

Commentary of the day

Blessed Henry Suso (around 1295 – 1366), Dominican
The Book of Eternal Wisdom

“That you may find peace in me”

“Lord, since the days of my youth my mind has sought an I-don’t-know-what with impatient thirst. So what was it, Lord? I still haven’t understood it entirely. It is many years now that I have ardently desired it, and I have not yet been able to grasp it… And yet that is what draws my heart and my soul and without which I cannot settle down in true peace.

Lord, I wanted to find happiness in the creatures of this world, as I saw so many people doing all around me. But the more I sought, the less I found; the closer I got, the further away I was. For everything told me: “ I am not what you are seeking.” So is it you, Lord, whom I have sought for so long? Has the attraction of my heart always and constantly been struggling to reach you? Then why did you not show yourself to me? How could you put off this meeting for so long? On how many exhausting paths have I got bogged down? For the person whom you anticipate with so much love, is truly happy, the person whom you do not let rest until he seeks his rest in you alone.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 17,20-26.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 24:46-53.

And he said to them, "Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day
and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things."
And (behold) I am sending the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."
Then he led them (out) as far as Bethany, raised his hands, and blessed them.
As he blessed them he parted from them and was taken up to heaven.
They did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
and they were continually in the temple praising God.

Homily

"Then they returned to Jerusalem with great joy" and while celebrating this great feast day, we are participating in the same joy of the disciples of the Lord. This joy of being a witness to God's presence in us, will give us the energy to announce with certitude the love and forgiveness of God. A Christian life is a life of joy and fulfilment with hope of resurrection and the second coming. It is in this joy that others will be able to discover the immense presence of God in our lives that they will know that we are His disciples.

It is strange in an ordinary human relationship that we celebrate a feast of departure of a beloved person and the world will certainly find difficult to understand the joy of the disciples on this day. How a departure that is often painful perhaps a reason for joy? If we are celebrating today, it is the new life that Jesus is proposing to us, a life in the Father. The possibility of divine immersion.

This celebration today invites us to joy and hope. We live in a world with much suffering. The media bring to us every day the violence, injustice and exclusion. In this troubled world where peace and serenity have become a rare occasion, we are forced to look for it in the divine intervention. The ascension gives us this rare hope that the world search today and very much in need of the time.

The risen Christ lives in the Father's glory and nothing can prevent the coming of His kingdom. He came to sow the seeds of the Kingdom, joy, peace, forgiveness and nothing can stop their germination. The risen Christ wants to involve us all in His victory over evil, there will be struggles and even suffering to endure, but to those who live faithfully the call to holiness, will certainly see the liberation that the Lord promises.

The disciples were happy and love to stay there looking upon the sky for the second coming, may be! Like in the feast of transfiguration, the temptation to remain in the pleasant moment is great. However the ship is not meant to be in dock, it should in the sea. We are called to live this joy and to announce to the whole world by our lives that Jesus is still alive in us and through us. Thus the world will be assured of this divine hope and joy. Amen

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Jean 16,23b-28.

Scripture: John 16:23-28

23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father, he will give it to you in my name. 24 Hitherto you have asked nothing in my name; ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. 25 "I have said this to you in figures; the hour is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in figures but tell you plainly of the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name; and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from the Father. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father."

The message

For our meditation, I will propose three words: Pray, love and image.

Jesus is telling to the disciples that they see and hear everything in figures and one day they will listen from Him in a simple plain language about the Father. Till today we haven't fully achieved in decoding all that Jesus has spoken to them. We need the grace of understand what Jesus is teaching to us and from that to know and love the Father, as Jesus has loved Him.

The send point is, love. We should rise high with the disciples of Jesus to love Jesus. In our weakness and limitedness, it is possible to love Jesus, as He has loved us. In our simplicity without hiding anything from Jesus, by simply surrendering to his will, we can easily express our love for Him. In our love relationship we should reduce the distance between us and God, and cooperate with Him to create an ambiance of proximity, as He has done with us in the incarnation.

The third is prayer. As I have already mentioned, prayer is a dialogue with the Father. In this dialogue, Jesus is asking us to take Him with us: Ask in His name. Many at times, we have turned this dialogue into monologue, because we don’t give word to God. The God love and mercy gives all that He has to us and He takes pleasure in listening to us. If we wish to profit from our prayer, we should accord God the priority.

Commentary of the day

Saint Clement of Alexandria (150- c.215), theologian
Stromata 7,7 ; PG 9, 450f.

“Ask and you will receive: and you will be filled with joy”

To reverence and honour him whom we believe to be Word, Saviour, and Leader, and by him, the Father, not on special days, as some others do, but doing this continually throughout our whole life and in every way: this is our duty. The chosen people cries out: "Seven times a day have I praised you" (Ps 118[119],164). Whence not in a specified place, or selected temple, or at certain festivals and on appointed days, but during his whole life and in every place, the truly spiritual person… honours God, that is, acknowledges his gratitude for the knowledge of the way to live.

And if the presence of someone good, through the respect and reverence which they inspire, always improves those with whom they associate, with much more reason do not they who always hold uninterrupted converse with God by their knowledge, life, and thanksgiving not improve at every step in everything: conduct, words, disposition?... Holding festival, then, in our whole life, persuaded that God is wholly present everywhere, we cultivate our fields, singing; we sail the sea to the sound of hymns and, in all our other conversation we conduct ourselves like “citizens of heaven” (Phil 3:20)...

Prayer is, then, to speak more boldly, intimate converse with God. Even if we whisper softly and, not opening the lips, speak in silence, yet we cry inwardly. For God constantly hears our interior voice… Indeed, the genuinely spiritual person prays throughout his whole life, endeavouring by prayer to have fellowship with God. And he leaves behind him all that is of no service, as having now received the perfection of one who acts by love… His whole life is a sacred liturgy.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 16,20-23a.

Scripture: John 16:20-23

20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is in travail she has sorrow, because her hour has come; but when she is delivered of the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father, he will give it to you in my name.

The message

In life we are tempted to choose the easy approach, avoiding anything unpleasant on the way. Jesus seems to propose to us to take the right way, accompanied by His guidance and support. He is assuring us that every difficult moment of life can be an occasion to grow and there is always a possibility of getting closer to inner peace and joy.

This world is not a model to be imitated in our march towards the perfection of the Joy of Christ. Their sentiments and feelings are depending on the appearance and visibility, whereas the Truth may tell us just the opposite. Our faith in Jesus and the belief of His second coming can be a guiding force to win over the present suffering and turning it into a way to the resurrection. Let us not hesitate to take harsh decisions, choose a difficult and narrow path, because Jesus will support a sincere and faithful soul.

Scripture: John 16:16-20

16 "A little while, and you will see me no more; again a little while, and you will see me." 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, "What is this that he says to us, `A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'; and, `because I go to the Father'?" 18 They said, "What does he mean by `a little while'? We do not know what he means." 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him; so he said to them, "Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, `A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.

The message

How can a sorrow can turn in to joy? It is just like a bitter pile that cures the sickness. The sorrow caused by separation in the emotional and sentimental attachment to Jesus, will however give way to the cognisance of the Truth of Jesus’ union with the Father, which will give us access to the Father of Jesus, through the descending of the Holy Spirit. There we will live in the Joy of the Lord, which overcomes all sort of human feelings and emotions, fully connected to the divine realities of life.

Like the disciples we too are much led by emotions and feelings than the truth, we allow ourselves to be animated by these sentiments. How many good and healthy relationships have broken because of mere ignorance of the Truth? Jesus by the death, resurrection and ascension helps us to understand the divine plan of salvation, the deep love of the Father. Without understanding this divine love, our Faith will get displaced without any foundation.

In this year of mercy we are called to have patience with others and with us too, when we don’t understand the events of life. Let us put our confidence in the Lord and He will transform all our present sorrows in to Joy, provided we remain faithful in His love.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 16,12-15.

In English

Scripture: John 16:12-15

12 "I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

The message

Today Jesus is surprising us with a strange teaching pointing to us His cognisance on us and our incapacities. He knows our abilities and how to teach us. It is not easy to understand the divine realities. Thus our submission in humility to the grace will help us to open us more to the divine blessings, which will make us capable of understanding divine realities. How good we may try, if this grace is not given, we can’t understand the Word of God.

In the First reading we have a wonderful story in the life of Saint Paul. Though humanly he has failed to convince the people of Athens to believe in the resurrection, God has chosen among them Denys (yesterday was his feast day in orthodox churches) a member of the Areopagus Council (Athens high court), who will become the disciple of Paul, later Bishop of Athens, to announce the Good News. It is the marvellous work of the Lord and we have to surrender to His will, if we wish to do God’s will.

It is important to us today that we open our hearts and minds to this divine teaching, so that our intellect be able to understand divine mysteries. Only Holy Spirit can help us to see in human being the divine presence. To see God in all, we should live in God. Without the Holy Spirit, living in God is impossible. Let us prepare ourselves to receive the Holy Spirit.
