Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 16,20-23a.

In English

Scripture: John 16:20-23

20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is in travail she has sorrow, because her hour has come; but when she is delivered of the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father, he will give it to you in my name.

The message

Jesus is very much a realist than most of us, who claim to be so. He uses an image local that all the mothers have undergone, to explain to us, that the joy that Jesus offers, doesn’t know the path of miracle and magic, but through a hard work and grace.

The joy that He offers is not of this world, but from heaven. Thus the world can never offer us the same joy that Jesus offers nor it will be able to understand the depth of this joy. The joy that Jesus offers, sustains all sort of persecution and oppression and the joy that He gives, remains always intact with the one who believes in Christ and lives in Him.

This joy is the fruit of not mere human effort, but from the listening of the will of God and accomplishing the same will in our daily life and it is possible only with the help of the Holy Spirit. The joy of Jesus is from this accomplishment of the will of His Father. Thus it is imperative that we remain eternally connected with the Father, if we desire to participate in the joy of Jesus.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 16,15-20.

Voici les signes qui accompagneront ceux qui deviendront croyants : en mon nom, ils expulseront les démons ; ils parleront en langues nouvelles ;

Scripture: Mark 16:15-20 [alternate reading: John 17:11-19]

15 And he said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover." 19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that attended it. Amen.

Homily

The feast of the Ascension helps us understand not only what Jesus has taught us about the resurrection and on the life after death, but also it becomes a door of hope to believers that the world has ever known. Only believers will be able to decode the joy this celebration brings us and our union with the saints in heaven. The world has evolved and changed, yet in their quest for joy and peace, we see no improvement or development and they haven’t reached the joy and peace that they search for the eternity. On contrary the same joy and peace which the world search since quite a long generation is felt and lived fully in the men and women of God who engage their life in prayer, contemplation and action. To our surprise, to these people this joy and peace are always assured.

God who is faithful to His promise has not changed. The persons who are close to this unchanging God, will faithfully keep His commandments. The Feast of the Ascension tells us that God loves us and through Jesus, our humanity is entered into the heavenly abode. What a wonderful mystery and gift that God has offered to the humanity? He came to show us how much He loves us and He will come again for a final judgment. "Galileans, why do you stand here looking into the sky? This Jesus who has been taken to heaven from you, come in like the same manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. "

"Go into all the world and preach the good news, is the last command from God. There are few who take this very serious, while announcing the Good news, fail to realize that they should life the love and forgiveness to the core of their being. "We need to communicate to the world that this God of love is also a God of judgment and true to his promise. But then, we have no right what so ever to judge them, in god’s name.

It is important for me to remind you all the beginning of the second reading of this Sunday to understand our baptismal places duty. "Brothers, I am in prison because of the Lord, I urge you to lead you in a way worthy of your vocation: to have a lot of humility, meekness and patience, bearing with one another in love ; be careful to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. "If we are true Christians, we must apply this advice which comes from the letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians and put them in practice in a rigorous manner and transform it as a rule of life.

Although this feast tells us that Jesus ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father, He continues to inspire us and lead us by the Holy Spirit to live our lives fully. He is everywhere and in all. Let us be witnesses of His joy and peace. Our life filled with joy and peace itself will testify to the presence of the risen Jesus.

In ten days we will celebrate a big party: Pentecost. It is this presence of the Holy Spirit who accompanied the disciples so they could proclaim the good news, a new hope and also joy. On this day in certain parishes they celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation with others who are preparing to participate. Do not forget to keep them in our daily prayer. Let us prepare ourselves to receive the Spirit of the Lord and to renew our commitment. Let us remember our baptismal vocation and live it fully, amen.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 16,12-15.

Scripture: John 16:12-15

12 "I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

The message

The mystery of Trinity was revealed to us very clearly by Jesus Christ. Even though this revelation is partially revealed even in the Old Testament, it is today that we understand little better. Though Jesus has revealed to us all that He knows about His Father, for He has called each and every one of us as His friend, we His friends with very little and limited intelligence, can never be able to understand this mystery without the Holy Spirit, in its totality.

The Father in Jesus and Jesus is sent be the Father and the Holy Spirit is sent by the Father and He will communicate to us all that Jesus wants us to say, all these are mere confusion, without the help from the Holy Spirit. Let us humbly pray to the Father that we may be able to understand what the Holy Spirit will communicate to us.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 16,5-11.

Gospel text (Jn 16,5-11): Jesus said to his disciples, «But now I am going to the One who sent me and none of you asks me where I am going; instead you are overcome with grief because of what I have said. Indeed believe me: It is better for you that I go away, because as long as I do not leave, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go away, it is to send him to you, and when He comes, He will vindicate the truth in face of the world with regard to sin, to the way of righteousness, and to the Judgment. What has been the sin? They did not believe in me. What is the way of righteousness? I am on the way to the Father, meanwhile you will not see me. What Judgment? The Ruler of this world has himself been condemned».

The Message

The final message from the Lord to His Apostles: a message of hope and assurance, in the heart of their grief. Though the Lord will be absent physically from now on, by the grace of the Holy Spirit, He will start to relive in the deeper part of the disciples, in a manner totally different and unknown, which will change the disciples radically. A fearful disciple becomes a challenge to the great religion. From a humble beginning of few believers, who love and care for each other by their openness and forgiveness, by putting everything in common, a great religion is born.

All these happen and possible, because they allow the Holy Spirit to reign over them and in their decision making process. Jesus never promised a rosy life to the disciples, but a life with conviction and meaning, filled with joy and happiness, and courage to face all the difficulties, even the death as something which has no value before a life in Christ.

The same meaningful life is possible, only if we listen to the Holy Spirit and all Him to act in us. Shall we……………….?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 15,26-27.16,1-4a.

Scripture: John 15:26-16:4

26 But when the Counselor comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness to me; 27 and you also are witnesses, because you have been with me from the beginning. [John 16] 1 I have said all this to you to keep you from falling away. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues; indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. 3 And they will do this because they have not known the Father, nor me. 4 But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you of them. I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.

The message

Jesus, the true friend of the Apostles, sees beforehand their difficulty and assures them that He will always there with them, particularly in their moment of rejection and oppression. He, who has come to save the world, will never abandon them. He needs us more than before, because, if we don’t cooperate with the Holy Spirit, He can’t through us save the world.

He doesn’t judge the world. All that Jesus is telling us is that they act in ignorance and thinking that they do the right thing, right thing in the name of God. The first Christian people lived and experience one such difficult time.

Though in general we don’t witness such situation, there are many who still undergo the same experience, in this modern world. Jesus is sending us in their midst, among these oppressors t to love and teach them the real message of love and forgiveness. He is sending us with his Spirit, the Spirit of the Father, the Holy Spirit. All that is expected from us is, to listen to the Sprit and act accordingly.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 15,9-17.

Amen.

Scripture: John 15:9-17

9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. 12 "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 This I command you, to love one another.

Homily

We are entering in the six Easter Sunday. Last week we meditated on the theme "love one another as I have loved you '. There was still another theme that has dominated our meditation, was ‘abide in my love’.

The God who loves us has sent His only Son, so that through him the world might be saved. Jesus fully aware of this vocation and mission entrusted to Him by the Father remained faithful to this mission, even to the death on the Cross. To abide in the Father, to Jesus is synonymous with doing the will of his Father. Throughout his life, Jesus showed us how can we abide in Jesus, and through Him in God.

If He asks us to abide in Him, it is because that we may have His joy in abundance and in its fullness. God wants us to be happy and joyful. A heart that loves is happy, says Mother Theresa. The joy of Jesus is be totally immersed in the love of the Father by submitting himself without any reservation to His will. In a quintessential obedience that He did everything that His Father asked him to do. Like him, the joy of the disciple is to bathe in the love of Jesus by fulfilling His commandments.

The Incarnation, the Cross, the death and resurrection of the Lord were an expression of His love for us and He was filled with joy. Through His life, He not only taught us to love like Him, but also gave His life. Saint Peter in the first reading tells us that God in this love makes no difference of the person, by his race or color, or even religions. In his Humanity, He made us capable of participating in His divinity.

The exception that He has done to the pagan world is quit astonishing. It is amazing that the Gentiles had received the Holy Spirit, even before they are not baptized. Abiding in God is to become God-himself for us brothers and sisters, without any preference. Do whatever God will love to do for this humanity, he so loved. This is our mission and by actualizing this mission in our daily life, will be an expression of our love for this God who loves us. Thus we would remain in his love. By our behavior and our actions, we should break down all the stone walls that divide the world. Once we have destroyed all these separations, it is important that we watch actions and thinking that may give rise to the rebuilding of these walls once again.

If God wants us to love each other, it's because he loved us in Christ and loves us through our brothers and sisters. The one who loves us, is in the just right to ask us to reach out to others so that they also taste this divine love in us and through us. This demand and requirement is entirely justifiable and understandable, as He tells us that we are no more His disciples, but His friends. He elevates us from mere discipleship to be His close friends, who will do His will. He told us all that the Father has communicated to Him. It is with this confidence that Jesus sends us to His people. And we are invited to spread this divine love.

When we proclaim the Good News, it is quite normal that we face the world of Spirit, who seeks only the personal interest in selfishness, then the Spirit of God which seeks everything in love. It is love that is the key to the door of salvation. We must adhere to the Spirit of God for this love.

Divine love also carries another wonder: those who love God becomes the one he loves. It is in this sense that we must take this request to Jesus: remain in my love as I abide in the love of the Father. Love is the Christian identity and a baptismal vocation. Lord, you who are Love, we pray for each other. Build us together in peace with your love. Amen.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 15,18-21.

Scripture: John 15:18-21

18 "If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, `A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also. 21 But all this they will do to you on my account, because they do not know him who sent me.

The message

Jesus has come to purify the world and He remained pure without being contaminated by the world’s value system. He was well aware of His origin and remained faithful to the will of the Father. Since the world couldn’t understand the message of love, it not only rejected the message of forgivenss, but also tried to finish off Jesus from this world.

We are His disciples and we will face the same consequence, if we try to remain faithful to the will of the Father. It is because of this rejection of this world that Jesus is asking us to abide in Him, as He is abiding in His Father. Only in this union with the Father that we will get the necessary energy to face the oppositions and rejections that the present world may place before the Good News that we are called to announce.

Scripture: John 15:12-17

12 "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 This I command you, to love one another.

The message

Throughout this week we are meditating on the theme of love and particularly abiding in His love. Today Jesus is raising each and every one us little more than simple disciples of Jesus, but to a deep relationship of divine friendship. He calls each and every one of us as His friend. But the question that we have to ask to ourselves is, ‘am I a friend to Jesus?’ do I share everything to Jesus?

Our life should be an open book, filled with love so that every person who desires the genuine love and forgiveness may find a place in our hearts. If we are able to do so, than the merit should be accorded to God, because it is He who has chosen us and sent us in mission, to spread the world with the fire of love.

How can we remain in silence before injustice and oppression before our eyes? We are a chosen generation, called to be the image of the loving Father, who loves us without any condition.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Jean 15,9-11.

Scripture: John 15:9-11

9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

The message

Jesus never asks us to do something He himself hasn’t verified. All that He is asking us is to simply imitate Him. In this imitation, we will understand how much Jesus is united with the Father and His inner joy to do the will of the Father.

The incarnation and resurrection do help us to understand the deeper love that the Creator has for us, the creation. All that is demanded is, simply to repay to God what we have received from Him, by loving and forgiving His children, our brothers and sisters.

It is only in this human love and our faithfulness to His divine love that we may abide in Him, as He abides in us through the same love. If Jesus has taken the Cross, isn’t it because of His love for us? How are we going to repay to this love? Mother Theresa says, a heart which loves, will be a joyful heart. Jesus wants us to be joyful and this joy in its fullness. Are we ready to accept this joy?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 15,1-8.

Scripture: John 15:1-8

1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine dresser. 2 Every branch of mine that bears no fruit, he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already made clean by the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If a man does not abide in me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples.

The message

For every Christian, Jesus is the cause and the source of existence. The day we remain not connected with Jesus, the very day we cease to exist as Christian. It is in Him and through Him that we are nourished and protected.

It is in this union with the Father that Jesus has asked us to be perfect as the heavenly Father is perfect. It is simply asking the mango tree to give us mango. Since we are created in the image of God, we are called to participate in the divinity of God.

Today Jesus is invitingus to understand the necessity of our abiding in Jesus and through Him in God. Just like the Father, in His goodness keeps doing good, we too are called to give good fruit. It is through the good fruit that the quality of the vine is measured. If we wish to glorify the Father, we should learn to do good naturally without force or obligation.
