Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 1, 46-56)

En ce temps-là,
Marie rendit grâce au Seigneur
en disant :
« Mon âme exalte le Seigneur,
exulte mon esprit en Dieu, mon Sauveur !
Il s’est penché sur son humble servante ;
désormais tous les âges me diront bienheureuse.
Le Puissant fit pour moi des merveilles ;

Gospel text (Lc 1,46-56):

Mary said: «My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit exults in God my savior! He has looked upon his servant in her lowliness, and people forever will call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me, Holy is his Name! From age to age his mercy extends to those who live in his presence. He has acted with power and done wonders, and scattered the proud with their plans. He has put down the mighty from their thrones and lifted up those who are downtrodden. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He held out his hand to Israel, his servant, for he remembered his mercy, even as he promised our fathers, Abraham and his descendants forever».

Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months and then returned home.

The message

Very hurriedly Mary went to visit Elizabeth and today she is not in a hurry. She remained with Elizabeth about three months and then returned home. This time was necessary for Elizabeth and we are called to give the same to all our brothers and sisters who are in need of us. Without giving this time necessary, we can’t be truly Christians.

Mary inspired by the Holy Spirit reminds us our salvation history and the fidelity of God. It is in this fidelity that the humanity will be able to taste this joy that God has decided to share with Mary, the mother of Jesus. All that He has given to Mary, He has given to the humanity, including Christ, the Son of God. Don’t we have the reason to be happy and grateful?

appelé Joseph ;
car tu as trouvé grâce auprès de Dieu.
Voici que tu vas concevoir et enfanter un fils ;
tu lui donneras le nom de Jésus.
Il sera grand,
il sera appelé Fils du Très-Haut ;
le Seigneur Dieu
lui donnera le trône de David son père ;
Marie dit à l’ange :
« Comment cela va-t-il se faire,
puisque je ne connais pas d’homme ? »
L’ange lui répondit :
« L’Esprit Saint viendra sur toi,
et la puissance du Très-Haut
te prendra sous son ombre ;
Marie dit alors :
« Voici la servante du Seigneur ;
que tout m’advienne selon ta parole. »

Amen.

Gospel text (Lc 1,26-38):

In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth. He was sent to a young virgin who was betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the family of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. The angel came to her and said, «Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you». Mary was troubled at these words, wondering what this greeting could mean.

But the angel said, «Do not fear, Mary, for God has looked kindly on you. You shall conceive and bear a son and you shall call him Jesus. He will be great and shall rightly be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the kingdom of David, his ancestor; He will rule over the people of Jacob forever and his reign shall have no end». Then Mary said to the angel, «How can this be if I am a virgin?». And the angel said to her, «The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the holy child to be born shall be called Son of God. Even your relative Elizabeth is expecting a son in her old age, although she was unable to have a child, and she is now in her sixth month. With God nothing is impossible». Then Mary said, «I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me as you have said». And the angel left her.

Homily

Today’s Gospel leads us to Nazareth to a small village where, a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph was living. We are entering interior of this exceptional family, they are completely different people, yet they are committed to fulfilling the will of God. "Thy will be done. » It is in this fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham and particularly to the people of Israel that we are witnessing these days in the celebration of the Incarnation.

Annunciation happens in a discreet place, at home, alone with Mary, in an isolated place of the house and with Joseph and Angel it is in the dream, deep sleep, in the darkness. A personal invitation extended to these people with a particular mission in a particular time, but with universal implications for the eternity. God invites us individually for universal mission. Mary listened to the Word of God, and today she will repeat the same request to us, "Do whatever He tells you"

In a few days we will celebrate Christmas, the birth of Christ, King of the universe, in a manger, surrounded only by his parents and animals. "Hail Mary, full of grace. " A grace to give birth to the son in a foreign land? Without a shelter and protection? This grace is totally different, nothing to do with material blessings. It is a special grace accorded only to Mary and Joseph in the divine history: to bear the Holy Child in their own hands and feed Him, to be with Him, to participate in His joy, in its smallness, but a grace that God has given to His creature in Mary, to protect the Savior of the world. How much God is in need of us to this accomplishment of His promise! Joseph silently meditating with Mary all these events happening in his family and accompanies gladly like a faithful shadow, follows Mary and her Son, where ever God asked Him to lead them.

Since four weeks we are preparing for this Christmas, in order to participate in our smallness in the joy of this holy and wonderful family. As the people of Israel, we are waiting for the Lord, who will be born, in us alone, in our intimacy. "The Lord is with you," says the angel to us through Mary, and with Mary, we are invited to participate in his mission, not as an individual, but with others, like Mary with joseph and God with the people of God, through millions of known and unknown faces.

We believe that all is well in the right direction leads us towards the new born child. We did everything possible to welcome the child in our hearts. Let us beware! There will be unexpected events. Like David we may plan something wonderful and just. But God will willfully deny us the permission to go further, by telling us, first listen to me and do the rest We won’t be able to understand the events that will hit us. Jesus may come in the form of an arrogant man, may be in the form of an angry person, may be in the form of a unforgiving mentality. Are we ready to accept such people as part of our family and friends or going to expel them outside of our house? You may find me very much unreasonable and harsh. But who can tell us the way God functions? "Fear not, Mary, for you have found favor with God. "This will be our consolation. God will be with us, if we keep still our door open for such people who are generously rejected by the society, because they choose the best and the rest will be always out.

Today like king David we wish to keep God in the tabernacle and go back home live a life with is contrary to the law of love. David wanted to build God's temple, where he hoped to trap the presence of God forever with him. It's amazing that man desires to build a house for God forgetting that his house is given by God. We cannot and must not put God in his place, rather demand God, where is our place.

I urge you, my friends, do not forget that God lives in us. We are the temples of the Holy Spirit. Make no mistake like Zechariah before the very presence of God in the temple, who refused to believe in God’s word, rather let us discover the divine presence of God like Mary, alone in the house, with her God in an intimate and deep dialogue, in an interpersonal relationship. It is through the human encounters that God reveals His loving presence in this world.

"The Lord is with you," said the angel of the Lord. Mary said, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; That everything be done to me according to your word. "Then the angel left her. Dear friends, let us not leave from this Sunday celebration without this insurance. I wish you a good preparation. Amen.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 1, 26-38)

appelé Joseph ;

The message

Tomorrow we will have the same gospel reading and the church announces already the reason to be joyful. In this week of joy, let us rejoice in the presence of the angel Gabriel, which have provoked a genuine trouble, a deep fear in the heart of Mary by this solemn announce.

It is important that we remain with Mary, meditating the same message where a great event has begun. Let us be part of this history, surely in a troubled time, but by the assuring presence of the Holy Spirit, we will be able to participate in the joy of Mary and Joseph.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 1, 5-25)

Sa femme aussi était descendante d’Aaron ;

Or, tandis que Zacharie,
et il sera rempli d’Esprit Saint dès le ventre de sa mère ;
au Seigneur leur Dieu ;
parce que tu n’as pas cru à mes paroles ;
celles-ci s’accompliront en leur temps. »

Gospel text (Lc 1,5-25):

In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there lived a priest named Zechariah, belonging to the priestly clan of Abiah. Elizabeth, Zechariah's wife, also belonged to a priestly family. Both of them were upright in the eyes of God and lived blamelessly in accordance with all the laws and commands of the Lord, but they had no child. Elizabeth could not have any and now they were both very old.

Now, while Zechariah and those with him were fulfilling their office, it fell to him by lot, according to the custom of the priests, to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and burn incense. At the time of offering incense all the people were praying outside; it was then that an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. On seeing the angel, Zechariah was deeply troubled and fear took hold of him. But the angel said to him, «Don't be afraid, Zechariah, be assured that your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son and you shall name him John. He will bring joy and gladness to you and many will rejoice at his birth. This son of yours will be great in the eyes of the Lord. Listen: he shall never drink wine or strong drink, but he will be filled with Holy Spirit even from his mother's womb. Through him many of the people of Israel will turn to the Lord their God. He himself will open the way to the Lord with the spirit and power of the prophet Elijah; he will reconcile fathers and children, and lead the disobedient to wisdom and righteousness, in order to make ready for the Lord a people prepared».

Zechariah said to the angel, «How can I believe this? I am an old man and my wife is elderly, too». The angel replied, «I am Gabriel, who stands before God, and I am the one sent to speak to you and bring you this good news! My words will come true in their time. But you would not believe and now you will be silent and unable to speak until this has happened».

Meanwhile the people waited for Zechariah, and they were surprised that he delayed so long in the sanctuary. When he finally appeared, he could not speak to them and they realized that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He remained dumb and made signs to them. When his time of service was completed, Zechariah returned home and some time later Elizabeth became pregnant. For five months she kept to herself, remaining at home, and thinking, «What is the Lord doing for me! This is his time for mercy and for taking away my public disgrace».

The message

Let us look in to the life these extraordinary people who surround Jesus. Marie who surrender fully to the will of God, Joseph who obeys the word of God, Zachariah who learns from the silence imposed by God and Elisabeth keep silence and wonder the work of God for her. Their paths though different, but all rooted in God. It is in their faith they could respond to God positively.

The silence of Zachariah, though imposed by the angel, did help him to understand the mystery of God and see in his son the work of God in his life. These pauses and silences are not always negative and bad. They do miracles in the life of people, just like, it has done to Zachariah. Why not favorite this silence in us, before accepting Jesus, the new born child in to our hearts and enjoy the fruits of God’s revelation in Jesus?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 1, 18-24)

Voici comment fut engendré Jésus Christ :
Marie, sa mère,
avait été accordée en mariage à Joseph ;
vient de l’Esprit Saint ;
et elle enfantera un fils ;

Gospel text (Mt 1,18-24):

This is how Jesus Christ was born. Mary his mother had been given to Joseph in marriage but before they lived together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph, her husband, made plans to divorce her in all secrecy. He was an upright man, and in no way did he want to discredit her.

While he was pondering over this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, «Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. She has conceived by the Holy Spirit, and now she will bear a son. You shall call him “Jesus” for he will save his people from their sins». All this happened in order to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: «The virgin will conceive and bear a son, and he will be called Emmanuel which means: “God-with-us”». When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do and he took his wife to his home.

In English

Right from the beginning, things don’t seem to happen as God has planned. Since God is faithful, He intervenes now and then to correct the human errors and puts everything in its place. This divine intervention always invites human cooperation. He needs us; Mary and Joseph, so that God could in Jesus, participate in the human history, in its fullness. Jesus is a historical man, and God respects human history.

All that we are asked to do is to follow Mary and Joseph: “Let thy will be done.” Joseph takes Mary in to his home. A silent worker, but called to play an important role in the salvation history. God does call us today to participle in this salvation history. Are we ready like Joseph and Mary?

Salmon was the father of Boaz. His mother was Rahab. Boaz was the father of Obed. His mother was Ruth. Obed was the father of Jesse. Jesse was the father of David, the king.

David was the father of Solomon. His mother had been Uriah's wife. Solomon was the father of Rehoboam. Then came the kings: Abijah, Asaph, Jehoshaphat, Joram, Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manasseh, Amon, Josiah. Josiah was the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the deportation to Babylon.

After the deportation to Babylon Jechoniah was the father of Salathiel and Salathiel of Zerubbabel. Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud, Abiud of Eliakim, and Eliakim of Azor. Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, and Akim the father of Eliud. Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar of Matthan, and Matthan of Jacob. Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and from her came Jesus who is called the Christ —the Messiah. There were then fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, and fourteen generations from David to the deportation to Babylon, and fourteen generations from the deportation to Babylon to the birth of Christ.

The message

Incarnation is a great mystery that this Advent season helps us to understand and thank God for this wonderful gift. In this genealogy we discover that God is walking with us in our history. It is in this divine accompaniment that we find the reason to be happy and joyful.

In the other way, Jesus is one among us and helps us to go beyond from visible realities to invisible truth: the love of the Father and His faithfulness. His history is ours and He desires that we participate in His holiness. That we may be perfect as the heavenly Father is perfect. Shall we say yes to His call to holiness and live our life as desired by His Father?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 21, 28-32)

et vous n’avez pas cru à sa parole ;

Gospel text (Mt 21,28-32):

Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people, «What do you think of this? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said to him: ‘Son, today go and work in my vineyard’. And the son answered: ‘I don't want to’. But later he thought better of it and went. Then the father went to the second and gave him the same command. This son replied: ‘I will go, sir’, but he did not go. Which of the two did what the father wanted?». They answered, «The first». And Jesus said to them, «Truly, I say to you: the publicans and the prostitutes are ahead of you on the way to the kingdom of heaven. For John came to show you the way of goodness but you did not believe him, yet the publicans and the prostitutes did. You were witnesses of this, but you neither repented nor believed him».

The message

On this week of joy, we have two brothers, who respond to their father in a different way. This story does give us a hope in the sense that we can always go back to the essentials of life, even if we have failed or refused to obey.

Jesus seems to teach us that the Christian life and the joy of Christian faith does depend up on our personal relation to the Father and our engagement to accomplish the will of the Father. This story does remind us that we are always aware of what is expected of us and we have refused to do the will of the Father voluntarily. This voluntary omission is something serious that we have to give little attention today.

Jésus leur répliqua :
« À mon tour, je vais vous poser une question, une seule ;

Gospel text (Mt 21,23-27):

Jesus had entered the Temple and was teaching when the chief priests, the teachers of the Law and the Jewish authorities came to him and asked, «What authority have you to act like this? Who gave you authority to do all this?». Jesus answered them, «I will also ask you a question, only one. And if you give me an answer, then I will tell you by what authority I do these things. When John began to baptize, was it a work of God, or was it merely something human?». They reasoned out among themselves, «If we reply that it was a work of God, he will say: ‘Why, then, did you not believe him?’. And if we say: ‘The baptism of John was merely something human’, beware of the people: since all hold John as a prophet». So they answered Jesus, «We do not know». And Jesus said to them, «Neither will I tell you by what right I do these things».

The message

In this week of joy, let us not give much importance to the authority of Jesus; rather let us taste the Joy that the Lord gives us through His presence. When something extraordinary happens around us, the first reaction should be a sentiment of gratitude. In this gratitude, we will find the reason of our joy.

If we wish to preserve the joy that the Lord has given to us, when we are questioned unjustly, let us not be disappointed, but learn to respond to such people with a question. I assure you the question will demand a response and they will search for the response and we can save our peace of mind. Why not apply this from today onwards?

In English

We started our Advent season by meditating on watching the arrival and the signs of God’s presence amidst us. Last week we were waiting for the Lord. These themes have lead us to Christ through John the Baptist and his voice from the desert radiates in our ears. In this voice, there is a hope, a hope of the proximity of the presence of the Lord, He is already here, among us. There is a sense of anticipation, an anticipation of Joy. The child who jumped out of joy, shares his joy with us, the joy that identifies the presence of Christ in us. All that we are asked to day is, just like the internet connection, we need an identity and a password. Let us be guided by this joy, seek our identity in Jesus and ask him the password to have access to the Light and to participate in his joy. As the people of Israel welcomes the fulfillment of the promise of God, let us welcome Christ who will fulfill the same promise to us. "My soul rejoices in my God", this week is a week of joy.

"The Spirit of the Lord is in me. "By His presence Jesus says," today that Word has come true. "Now, who is Jesus for us and what relationship we have with Him and what is accomplished for us today? When John the Baptist says, "I am not a prophet," he tells us that Jesus is the prophet. The role of a prophet is to pass the massage of God to the people, to mediate, intercede for this people. Jesus is our light, we must be the reflection of that light, the light that illuminates the presence of Christ among us, a light that removes any kind of darkness, a light that brings people to our God, a light that makes reconciliation, unifies the people of God.

Jean Baptiste confirms that he is the voice of the desert. Our word must be a voice of this desert that is rooted in the word of God, which is holy, a word that listens and gives priority to others, a word of silence born from this deep divine relationship. This is not a passive silence, but very active because this word raises life, a life full of hope.

Look at the Magnification with a look of Avant which will give us guidance or direction for this week of joy. In this song of Mary, there is a joy and wonder at God's faithfulness to His promises and His faithfulness to the Alliance. It is a thanksgiving for God's work and a discovery of God's preference for the poor and small. He will not forget us. This is the raison of our joy.
What should we do? The first is humility, the second is the recognition of the presence of Christ in our midst and the third is our witness of life that will make visible the presence of God among humanity. I wish you all a happy march towards Jesus. Amen

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 17, 10-13)

Jésus leur répondit :
« Élie va venir
pour remettre toute chose à sa place.
Mais, je vous le déclare :
Élie est déjà venu ;

In English

Gospel text (Mt 17,10-13):

As they were coming down the mountainside, the disciples then asked Jesus, «Why do the teachers of the Law say that Elijah must come first?». And Jesus answered, «So it is: first comes Elijah to set everything as it has to be. But I tell you, Elijah has already come and they did not recognize him, but treated him as they pleased. And they will also make the Son of Man suffer». Then the disciples understood that Jesus was referring to John the Baptist.

The message

Jesus is not very much interested in answering the question directly, but takes us little further towards the finality of this question: the need to identify the prophet and urgency to respond to God positively. We are waiting to welcome Jesus and we need the capacity to identify Him. It is in this incapacity to identity Jesus that the people of God failed to accept Him.

In our good, faithful and holy waiting, if we are not able to identify the presence of Jesus in our brothers and sisters, all of our waiting and preparation will end in a disappointed note, because in our ignorance, we will refuse the entry of Jesus in our hearts.

Let us pray to the mother of Jesus to help us to identity Him and respond Him positively.
