Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 5, 43-48)

Tu aimeras ton prochain
et tu haïras ton ennemi.
Eh bien ! moi, je vous dis :
Aimez vos ennemis,
et priez pour ceux qui vous persécutent,
afin d’être vraiment les fils de votre Père qui est aux cieux ;

Godpel Reading: Matthew 5:43-48

43 "You have heard that it was said, `You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

The message

How to be perfect as the heavenly Father is perfect, while we are tempted to imitate others and be always politically correct?

Are we trying to show to be someone good, or do we really believe that we are good?

Do we really believe that we are the temple of the Holy Spirit and we are the children of God? If so, the exigency of today’s gospel is normal and just. If not, it is something impossible to achieve.

Gospel Reading: Matthew 5:20-26

20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 21 "You have heard that it was said to the men of old, `You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.' 22 But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, `You fool!' shall be liable to the hell of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Make friends quickly with your accuser, while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison; 26 truly, I say to you, you will never get out till you have paid the last penny.

The message

Others are not our model. It is not enough to be good like others, but good like Jesus. Thus our imitation is Christ. The first lessons of Jesus is pardon and reconciliation. If we are not able to get reconciled with our own brothers and sisters, how can we be reconciled with Christ?

One point that we should note in this reconciliation is that our reconciliation is not pushed by the fear of last judgement, rather the love of God. To taste this divine love, the reconciliation is imperative. The pardon is possible, only if we see in our brothers and sisters, the face of God, the humanity as the visage of God. In every human being God suffers and enjoys. It is in and through us that God shares His love for the humanity and it is through the same humanity that we can express our love for God.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 7, 7-12)

En ce temps-là,

Jésus disait à ses disciples :
« Demandez, on vous donnera ;
cherchez, vous trouverez ;
frappez, on vous ouvrira.
En effet, quiconque demande reçoit ;
qui cherche trouve ;

Alors Dieu agit.

In English

Gospel text (Mt 7,7-12):

Jesus said to his disciples, «Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened. For everyone who asks, receives; whoever seeks, finds; and the door will be opened to him who knocks. Would any of you give a stone to your son when he asks for bread? Or give him a snake, when he asks for a fish? As bad as you are, you know how to give good things to your children. How much more, then, will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! So, do to others whatever you would that others do to you: there you have the Law and the Prophets».

The message

In this week of conversion, we continue our meditation on prayer. Jesus is asking us to pray. At the same time; He doesn’t give us in detail what we should ask and what is the need to ask, because God knows our needs much better than we. To understand these questions, I will propose something purely logic.

If we ask, we should know what we are asking and why we are asking. If we ask something from God, we should do His will. Thus before asking, we should know His will. This knowledge is more important than asking. If we complain that our prayers remain unanswered, it is because, they may not be coherent with the will of the Father or we are something which may harm us. How can God give us something which is not good for us?

Our prayer finds its foundation in the generosity and goodness of God. The prayer of Ester is a good model for us. Let us learn to have such confidence in God and try to know His will, before asking. If we don’t the will of the Father, it is better not to ask, because God will never abandon us and He will give us without asking.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 11, 29-32)

Car Jonas a été un signe pour les habitants de Ninive ;
et ils la condamneront ;

In English

Gospel Reading: Luke 11:29-32

29 When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah became a sign to the men of Nineveh, so will the Son of man be to this generation. 31 The queen of the South will arise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

The message

Why Jesus is calling this generation as ‘an evil generation’? The evil is not in the question, rather in the behavior, thinking and acting. The people who has rejected John Baptist, is rejecting Jesus. If they desired to see the sign, the sing was before them in Jesus Christ. Jesus who knows the intention of this people, rightly calls them evil.

I have proposed to my readers ‘conversion’ as the theme for this week. Today's reading is asking us to repent and be converted like the people of Nineveh. Let us attentively look for the sign available for us today and engage positively in the building of a just community, the Kingdom of God.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 6, 7-15)

In English

Gospel Reading: Matthew 6:7-15

7 "And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread; 12 And forgive us our debts, As we also have forgiven our debtors; 13 And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. 14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; 15 but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

The message

The word of God has a power and it is capable of transforming our life. At the same time, let us not get confused with our words. Our words in relation with God don’t carry the same power. It is preciously because we have to remind ourselves that in a true prayer, we should speak less, and give the time and space to God and if we wish to speak, it should be a response to what God has spoken to us.

The prayer is a dialogue and it is a relationship. We share with God our life in full recognition of all that God has done to us and submit our petitions assuring God that His will be done in our lives. In the prayer we are not alone; we take the full community in our prayer. Thus mutual sharing, helping and reconciliation are essential part of our prayer, our Christian life.

Toutes les nations seront rassemblées devant lui ;
Car j’avais faim, et vous m’avez donné à manger ;
j’avais soif, et vous m’avez donné à boire ;
j’étais un étranger, et vous m’avez accueilli ;
j’étais nu, et vous m’avez habillé ;
j’étais malade, et vous m’avez visité ;
Car j’avais faim, et vous ne m’avez pas donné à manger ;
j’avais soif, et vous ne m’avez pas donné à boire ;
j’étais un étranger, et vous ne m’avez pas accueilli ;
j’étais nu, et vous ne m’avez pas habillé ;

? Pourquoi pas ?

In English

Gospel Reading: Matthew 25:31-46

31 "When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33 and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left.34 Then the King will say to those at his right hand, `Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.'

37 Then the righteous will answer him, `Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' 40 And the King will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.'

41 Then he will say to those at his left hand, `Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' 44 Then they also will answer, `Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?' 45 Then he will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.' 46 And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

The message

Many of us, good Christians, during this Lenten season, love to fix our eyes towards the sky and live our life for the Lord. Today, Jesus is asking us just opposite. Not to raise our eyes towards the heaven, rather look right and left and see, if there is someone who is waiting for you.

For this week, I propose to my readers the theme of conversion. It is important to look our life in a different angle and verify, if our actions are qualified as the will of the Father. If not, we may end up doing something good as we think, by forgetting the work the Lord has entrusted to us. It is not enough to do good, but rather do the will of the Father.

The question of today’s gospel is, have done my will? Where were you when your brother and sister were suffering? Are you very much closed to see what you have and develop and nourish yourself, or looking what you can do for others, thus opening the door for all, to the risk of losing your own identity by taking the divine identity in you?

The conversion demands a change. What you wish to change in you?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 5, 27-32)

En ce temps-là,
Jésus sortit et remarqua un publicain
(c’est-à-dire un collecteur d’impôts)
du nom de Lévi
assis au bureau des impôts.
Il lui dit :
« Suis-moi. »
Lévi donna pour Jésus une grande réception dans sa maison ;

In English

7 After this he went out, and saw a tax collector, named Levi, sitting at the tax office; and he said to him, "Follow me." 28 And he left everything, and rose and followed him. 29 And Levi made him a great feast in his house; and there was a large company of tax collectors and others sitting at table with them. 30 And the Pharisees and their scribes murmured against his disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?" 31 And Jesus answered them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

The message

To understand the way Jesus is behaving, we need love and mercy. People those don’t have this love and mercy, and particularly those who judge others, will find difficult to accept this unorthodox behaviour of Jesus. The Pharisees of today’s gospel are in the same difficulty.

In life we have plenty of choices. Be open to the teachings of Jesus and keep his teaching of love as the principal rule of life, then we will become the real light to our society. We have the other choice of living an individual life, doing no good neither to ourselves nor to others, living in solitude by complaining all that are not good, and live a life in a miserable way.

I think it is better to be with Jesus and Mathew, and strangely such invitations are plenty in our life time. We ignore such invitations and look for good and great people in life. It is important to enjoy the life we have, by looking towards the great work God has done to us. Only then we can be merciful and loving like Jesus. Why not start this today?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 9, 14-15)

Mais des jours viendront où l’Époux leur sera enlevé ;
alors ils jeûneront. »

In English

14 Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?" 15 And Jesus said to them, "Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.

The message

Jesus is not against fasting and all the mortification or penance. All that He is asking us, is this the right time to do so? Does the way we do our mortification and fasting is something agreeable to God? Do we know what pleases God and what is He demands from us today? Today’s readings do help us to respond these questions.

Certainly, I am not here to respond to these personal questions. Each of us should respond these questions. All that is important for us is, do we feel like weeding gusts invited to feast with Jesus now? If not, then this is the right time to fast and do penance. If we feel the joy, then still we do the fasting, because we would like to have this joy in its plenitude.

How to verify whether we are really in God? It is in our relationship with our brothers and sisters in the society. It is by our positive engagement in the development of the human society. It is in our way of being a light and a salt to our brothers. It is all. We can’t just ignore one and hold one. Everything is so inter mingled that we cannot be the other than be all.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 9, 22-25)

Il leur disait à tous :
« Celui qui veut marcher à ma suite,
qu’il renonce à lui-même,
qu’il prenne sa croix chaque jour

et qu’il me suive.
Car celui qui veut sauver sa vie
la perdra ;

Gospel Reading: Luke 9:22-25

22 "The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised." 23 And he said to all, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake, he will save it. 25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?

The message

Humanly speaking the Cross and sufferings should be avoided at any cost. If following Christ is a cross, we should immediately take a back and stop. If following Christ will give us joy and happiness, we should engage ourselves and take up any cross and pain to have this eternal joy.

Moses is proposing to the people the blessing and the curse. We have the choice. A hard work will give us a good result. If we consider the hard work as suffering, then we have missed the mark, failed to see the result, the joy and happiness this result can give us.

Listening the word of God and putting it in practice is not easy. If we put them in practice, we will find the inner happiness and joy. God is proposing us this Joy during this Lenten season.

To fill a bottle, we have to empty it. If we wish to be filled with the divine grace, we should learn to empty all human desires and make divine will as our own.

Renouncing ourselves, is transforming all human desires into divine will. Making God the centre of our being. It is not my will, let thy will be done. Thus slowly, we ordinary human being, will become extra-ordinary children of God, because we will learn to think and act as God wishes us to be. On that day, we will be able to say like Saint Paul, it is no more I live, but Christ lives in me. This Lenten season gives us an opportunity to grow and climb up to heaven, while living on this earth.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 6, 1-6.16-18)

afin que ton aumône reste dans le secret ;
ton Père qui voit dans le secret
te le rendra.

Et quand vous priez,
ne soyez pas comme les hypocrites :
ils aiment à se tenir debout
dans les synagogues et aux carrefours
pour bien se montrer aux hommes
quand ils prient.
et prie ton Père qui est présent dans le secret ;

parfume- toi la tête et lave- toi le visage ;
mais seulement de ton Père qui est présent au plus secret ;
ton Père qui voit au plus secret
te le rendra. »

Gospel Reading: Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

1 "Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 "Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 5 "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 16 "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

The Lenten message

(not on today’s gospel, but integrated)

Ash Wednesday

In Europe we feast the Tuesday before the Ash Wednesday and even we the priests, doing our retreat did feat today. For forty days we are going to prepare for the Easter and we are going to be with the Lord. Forty days without feast? This may not be the right approach. It is just the opposite. It is coming back to home. Coming closer to God. An encounter time with a merciful and loving God. Thus the Lenten season is not the season to suffer, it is a moment offered to every Christian to renew his or her relationship with God and be reconciled with Him. This reconciliation starts with our reconciliation with our brothers and sisters. How can we be reconciled with God, without being reconciled with His children, our brothers and sisters? Saint John will ask us, how can we love an unknown God without loving our brothers and sisters? Are we not liars, if we refuse to get reconciled with our brothers and sisters and claim to love God? As saint Agustin says, it is knowing God to love Him and to love Him, we should know Him. How to know and love God, or love and know God without reconciliation?

The reconciliation starts from within ourselves. The more we accept ourselves as we are and be able to love and reconcile within ourselves, the more we will be able to love and accept others. Thus these days we are called to enter alone into ourselves, a desert where no one has ever plunged. For some it may be a happy experience and for others it may be a frightening. Whatever be the experience, this is imperative to have a God experience, because God resides in us and we are the temple of the Holy Spirit, says Saint Paul.

The forty days of Jesus in the desert was the preparation for His mission. Any desert experience should have a mission. How to have this mission, from whom we receive it and how to prepare ourselves during these forty days? For someone it may be a self-discovery. For others, it may be a mission discovery. Each will have different aims and means. Let us not imitate others. We are not called to imitate others, rather imitate Jesus, who will lead us towards Jesus. Knowing God and loving Him, is a common mission and the way we love God is a particular mission.

All of us have received a mission from God, right from the beginning of our baptism. It is the Christian vocation to live together and discover the marvellous work of God in ourselves particularly and in the world largely. We can say that we have two different missions. One is very personal where we enter a personal dialogue with God in an intimate way and the other is community oriented where we discover the love God has for this people and how many of us are invited to assist this community. These missions are so inter mingled that one mission independently can’t exist without the other. We need the community to love God and the community is in need of us to experience the divine love.

In today’s gospel, Jesus gives us three important aspects of the Lenten season: The charity, the prayer and the mortifications. They are so intermingled that we cannot separate them. The charity is the expression of our divine love and the energy is received from God through the prayers and what we give is not from our abundance, but from our mortification and penances. All we do and say should have its origin from our relationship with God.

By doing repeatedly charity (charity doesn’t mean material giving, rather giving oneself as a good Samaritan), our life will be totally transformed into a charitable life that one day we will become charitable without being aware of this radical change brought by God in us. Thus we will become a virtuous person.

This transformation will be brought not by a human hand, but by the human cooperation to the divine plan. Prayer will play an important role in our participation of divine mission. Since prayer is our dialogue with God, asking Him, what He desires from us today, right now, our response to God and actions become a direct cooperation of God’s plan, a mission confined to us personally by God, for the well-being of His children.

The mortification and penance will help us to remain very close to God and will reminds us of our Christian vocation. Our personal growth through these mortifications and penances is not only for the personal good, but also for the well-being of the community, for whom God has chosen us and send us.

On this Lenten season I wish all of my readers to enjoy this wonderful opportunity that God gives us to be close to Him. This desert experience which we start today, is not in the empty land, but with a rich desert, which gives life to may invisible beings living there. Like John who saw an empty tomb and believed, I wish you too enter in this desert land and to discover the immense presence of God in our life. I wish you all a happy and fruitful and graceful Lenten season.
