Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Matthieu 20,17-28.

Parmi vous, il ne devra pas en être ainsi : celui qui veut devenir grand parmi vous sera votre serviteur ;

Gospel text (Mt 20,17-28):

When Jesus was going to Jerusalem, he took the Twelve aside and said to them on the way, «See, we are going to Jerusalem. There the Son of Man will be given over to the chief priests and the teachers of the Law who will condemn him to death. They will hand him over to the foreigners who will mock him, scourge him and crucify him. But he will be raised to life on the third day».

Then the mother of James and John came to Jesus with her sons, and she knelt down to ask a favor. Jesus said to her, «What do you want?». And she answered, «Here you have my two sons. Grant that they may sit, one at your right and one at your left, when you are in your kingdom». Jesus said to the brothers, «You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am about to drink?». They answered, «We can». Jesus replied, «You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right or at my left is not for me to grant. That will be for those for whom the Father has prepared it».

The other ten heard all this and were angry with the two brothers. Then Jesus called them to him and said, «You know that the rulers of the nations act as tyrants, and the powerful oppress them. It shall not be so among you; whoever wants to be more important in your group shall make himself your servant. And if you want to be first, make yourself the servant of all. Be like the Son of Man who has come, not to be served but to serve and to give his life to redeem many».

The message

We all desire to improve our status, including our spiritual status. To be close with Jesus and sit just right and left Him, may be a great dream. Jesus has no problem to share with us, with a condition that it is desired by His Father.

However, Jesus gives us two conditions to be fulfilled. The first is to drink His cup and the other is to participate in His baptism. When we look back 2000 years, today we may not that easily say yes to this demand, because it may cost even our life. If we so desire to say YES to Jesus, it is only in love that it is possible for us. ‘God so loved that world that He sent His only son’. If we don’t have this deep love for the people of God, this cup will be very bitter.

These days we pray a lot. Today Jesus seems to propose to us to evaluate what we ask Him. He says that we don’t know what we ask. Let us make an examination of conscience and find out by ourselves, whether what we ask is to serve people or to our own good. If we so desire, humility may be the best thing that we can ask God. He says, “Be like the Son of Man who has come, not to be served but to serve and to give his life to redeem many.”

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 23,1-12.

Toutes leurs actions, ils les font pour être remarqués des gens : ils élargissent leurs phylactères et rallongent leurs franges ;

Gospel Reading: Matthew 23:1-12

1 Then said Jesus to the crowds and to his disciples, 2 "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat; 3 so practice and observe whatever they tell you, but not what they do; for they preach, but do not practice. 4 They bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger. 5 They do all their deeds to be seen by men; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long, 6 and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues, 7 and salutations in the market places, and being called rabbi by men. 8 But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brethren. 9 And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. 10 Neither be called masters, for you have one master, the Christ. 11 He who is greatest among you shall be your servant; 12 whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

The message

Very often we are tempted by the honor and glory that the world give to us. If we remain faithful to the teaching of Jesus, and feel His presence in us, we can easily overcome these kind of temptation.

Jesus is telling us that we have a wonderful master in His Father and reminds us that we are the children of God. So, let us learn to discern and take a positive decision which will help us to be rooted in Christ, in a dignified way as true children of God.

This week I have already proposed to listen to the Word of God. Why not take today’s gospel as a direct message from God and put this in practice?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 6, 36-38)

En ce temps-là,

Jésus disait à ses disciples :
« Soyez miséricordieux comme votre Père est miséricordieux.
Ne jugez pas, et vous ne serez pas jugés ;
qui sera versée dans le pan de votre vêtement ;

In English

Gospel Reading: Luke 6:36-38

36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.37 "Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back."

The message

The prayer of Daniel is given to us as model. In this prayer there is forgiveness and openness. There is a longing to listen to the word of God and make it as the rule of life.

Jesus becomes our model today and His words are source of life giving. It is because of this eternal source, that we are called to imitate Jesus and this imitation will help us to imitate His Father. In this process of imitation, we will be transformed and we will act like the Father: merciful and forgiving.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 9,2-10.

Gospel Reading: Mark 9:2-10

2 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5 Then Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 6 He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, "This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!" 8 Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead could mean.

Homily

The Lenten season is a time of unveiling, a time consecrated to remove all that block us to have a direct relationship with God. In this process we discover the invisible presence of God in our life and we try to listen to Him. Our march towards the desert helps us to discover this invisible divine presence that accompanies us throughout our lives. Thus as I have mentioned early that this season is like home coming with lots of nostalgia, good and pleasant memories of God’s presence in our life.

In this discovery of God’s presence, there will be surprise, unexpected demands, requirements that will change us radically and may destroy the present status of life for a new life, towards an unknown destination. The moment we believe that all is well, everything begins to subside, the right time to take rest, will be the beginning of a new story, new way totally unexpected. Our father Abraham traveled the same path. This will now be the way-our own. With full confidence we move towards Easter.
The life of Jesus shows us the radical change that changed the conception of God of Israel. The Gospel of the Transfiguration shows us that Jesus is the priest par excellence, more than prophet Elijah, master of the law which Moses gave to the people of Israel. Yet the life of Jesus confirms that He was a king without a kingdom, a priest outside the temple, a prophet without identity. The Gospel tells us a new identity 'God's Son' that his own people refused to accept it. Jesus Himself brought out the God of heaven, who was inaccessible, faraway and has brought a loving God, a God of proximity.

Since Adam and Eve, there were plenty of exits, which still continue, without stopping. Abraham left everything to follow God’s Promised Land, the Exodus was an exits from slavery to liberation, the desert life was as an exit towards an elite community of God. This leaving behind and exit was always resisted in the salvation history. The world of the day will never understand the exist par excellence proposed in the mystery of the Cross that Jesus offers us today. The cross was and is a sign of scandal and through this cross Jesus has saved us.

We Christians accept the Cross which is a sign of scandal for others, will now be the only path that will lead us to the resurrection. For this week I propose the theme 'Recognizing the invisible presence of God in the visible events of our life and hear the word of God,' This is my Beloved Son: hear ye Him. "

First, we must ask: Who is Jesus for us? Are we ready to go out of our silence, our individualism, our disbelief, anger, etc? Let us come together to climb with the Lord to this holy mountain and listen to the Word of God.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 5, 43-48)

Tu aimeras ton prochain
et tu haïras ton ennemi.
Eh bien ! moi, je vous dis :
Aimez vos ennemis,
et priez pour ceux qui vous persécutent,
afin d’être vraiment les fils de votre Père qui est aux cieux ;

In English

Godpel Reading: Matthew 5:43-48

43 "You have heard that it was said, `You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

The message

How to be perfect as the heavenly Father is perfect, while we are tempted to imitate others and be always politically correct?

Are we trying to show to be someone good, or do we really believe that we are good?

Do we really believe that we are the temple of the Holy Spirit and we are the children of God? If so, the exigency of today’s gospel is normal and just. If not, it is something impossible to achieve.

In English

Gospel Reading: Matthew 5:20-26

20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 21 "You have heard that it was said to the men of old, `You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.' 22 But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, `You fool!' shall be liable to the hell of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Make friends quickly with your accuser, while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison; 26 truly, I say to you, you will never get out till you have paid the last penny.

The message

Others are not our model. It is not enough to be good like others, but good like Jesus. Thus our imitation is Christ. The first lessons of Jesus is pardon and reconciliation. If we are not able to get reconciled with our own brothers and sisters, how can we be reconciled with Christ?

One point that we should note in this reconciliation is that our reconciliation is not pushed by the fear of last judgement, rather the love of God. To taste this divine love, the reconciliation is imperative. The pardon is possible, only if we see in our brothers and sisters, the face of God, the humanity as the visage of God. In every human being God suffers and enjoys. It is in and through us that God shares His love for the humanity and it is through the same humanity that we can express our love for God.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 7, 7-12)

En ce temps-là,

Jésus disait à ses disciples :
« Demandez, on vous donnera ;
cherchez, vous trouverez ;
frappez, on vous ouvrira.
En effet, quiconque demande reçoit ;
qui cherche trouve ;

Alors Dieu agit.

In English

Gospel text (Mt 7,7-12):

Jesus said to his disciples, «Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened. For everyone who asks, receives; whoever seeks, finds; and the door will be opened to him who knocks. Would any of you give a stone to your son when he asks for bread? Or give him a snake, when he asks for a fish? As bad as you are, you know how to give good things to your children. How much more, then, will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! So, do to others whatever you would that others do to you: there you have the Law and the Prophets».

The message

In this week of conversion, we continue our meditation on prayer. Jesus is asking us to pray. At the same time; He doesn’t give us in detail what we should ask and what is the need to ask, because God knows our needs much better than we. To understand these questions, I will propose something purely logic.

If we ask, we should know what we are asking and why we are asking. If we ask something from God, we should do His will. Thus before asking, we should know His will. This knowledge is more important than asking. If we complain that our prayers remain unanswered, it is because, they may not be coherent with the will of the Father or we are something which may harm us. How can God give us something which is not good for us?

Our prayer finds its foundation in the generosity and goodness of God. The prayer of Ester is a good model for us. Let us learn to have such confidence in God and try to know His will, before asking. If we don’t the will of the Father, it is better not to ask, because God will never abandon us and He will give us without asking.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Luc

(Lc 11, 29-32)

Car Jonas a été un signe pour les habitants de Ninive ;
et ils la condamneront ;

In English

Gospel Reading: Luke 11:29-32

29 When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah became a sign to the men of Nineveh, so will the Son of man be to this generation. 31 The queen of the South will arise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will arise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

The message

Why Jesus is calling this generation as ‘an evil generation’? The evil is not in the question, rather in the behavior, thinking and acting. The people who has rejected John Baptist, is rejecting Jesus. If they desired to see the sign, the sing was before them in Jesus Christ. Jesus who knows the intention of this people, rightly calls them evil.

I have proposed to my readers ‘conversion’ as the theme for this week. Today's reading is asking us to repent and be converted like the people of Nineveh. Let us attentively look for the sign available for us today and engage positively in the building of a just community, the Kingdom of God.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Matthieu

(Mt 6, 7-15)

Gospel Reading: Matthew 6:7-15

7 "And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread; 12 And forgive us our debts, As we also have forgiven our debtors; 13 And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. 14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; 15 but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

The message

The word of God has a power and it is capable of transforming our life. At the same time, let us not get confused with our words. Our words in relation with God don’t carry the same power. It is preciously because we have to remind ourselves that in a true prayer, we should speak less, and give the time and space to God and if we wish to speak, it should be a response to what God has spoken to us.

The prayer is a dialogue and it is a relationship. We share with God our life in full recognition of all that God has done to us and submit our petitions assuring God that His will be done in our lives. In the prayer we are not alone; we take the full community in our prayer. Thus mutual sharing, helping and reconciliation are essential part of our prayer, our Christian life.

Toutes les nations seront rassemblées devant lui ;
Car j’avais faim, et vous m’avez donné à manger ;
j’avais soif, et vous m’avez donné à boire ;
j’étais un étranger, et vous m’avez accueilli ;
j’étais nu, et vous m’avez habillé ;
j’étais malade, et vous m’avez visité ;
Car j’avais faim, et vous ne m’avez pas donné à manger ;
j’avais soif, et vous ne m’avez pas donné à boire ;
j’étais un étranger, et vous ne m’avez pas accueilli ;
j’étais nu, et vous ne m’avez pas habillé ;

? Pourquoi pas ?

Gospel Reading: Matthew 25:31-46

31 "When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33 and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left.34 Then the King will say to those at his right hand, `Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.'

37 Then the righteous will answer him, `Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' 40 And the King will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.'

41 Then he will say to those at his left hand, `Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' 44 Then they also will answer, `Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?' 45 Then he will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.' 46 And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

The message

Many of us, good Christians, during this Lenten season, love to fix our eyes towards the sky and live our life for the Lord. Today, Jesus is asking us just opposite. Not to raise our eyes towards the heaven, rather look right and left and see, if there is someone who is waiting for you.

For this week, I propose to my readers the theme of conversion. It is important to look our life in a different angle and verify, if our actions are qualified as the will of the Father. If not, we may end up doing something good as we think, by forgetting the work the Lord has entrusted to us. It is not enough to do good, but rather do the will of the Father.

The question of today’s gospel is, have done my will? Where were you when your brother and sister were suffering? Are you very much closed to see what you have and develop and nourish yourself, or looking what you can do for others, thus opening the door for all, to the risk of losing your own identity by taking the divine identity in you?

The conversion demands a change. What you wish to change in you?
