Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Marc

(Mc 3, 1-6)

En ce temps- là,
Jésus entra de nouveau dans une synagogue ;
On observait Jésus

Gospel text (Mc 3,1-6):

Again Jesus entered the synagogue. A man who had a paralyzed hand was there and some people watched Jesus: Would he heal the man on the sabbath? If he did they could accuse him. Jesus said to the man with the paralyzed hand, «Stand here in the center». Then he asked them, «What does the Law allow us to do on the sabbath? To do good or to do harm? To save life or to kill?». But they were silent. Then Jesus looked around at them with anger and deep sadness because they had closed their minds. And he said to the man, «Stretch out your hand». He stretched it out and his hand was healed. But as soon as the Pharisees left, they met with Herod's supporters, looking for a way to destroy Jesus.

The message

Let us look into this gospel with an eye of a simple child of God. First the way Jesus is looking, which we are called to imitate, and the judgmental approach the people look, which we should avoid.

The second is the teaching of Jesus: do always good, even to your enemies. «What does the Law allow us to do on the sabbath? To do good or to do harm? To save life or to kill?». Let this wonderful teaching of Jesus be our guide and force of our daily life.

The third one is very important: the role of this paralyzed man. Simple obedience to the word of God is the wise decision. When we are confused, let us fall back to the teaching of Jesus and we will be saved.

Gospel text (Mc 2,23-28):

One sabbath Jesus was walking through grainfields. As his disciples walked along with him, they began to pick the heads of grain and crush them in their hands. Then the Pharisees said to Jesus, «Look! they are doing what is forbidden on the sabbath!». And He said to them, «Have you never read what David did in his time of need, when he and his men were very hungry? He went into the house of God when Abiathar was High Priest and ate the bread of offering, which only the priests are allowed to eat, and he also gave some to the men who were with him». Then Jesus said to them, «The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. So the Son of Man is master even of the sabbath».

The message

How many of us wish to be faithful to the law of the society and ignore many good people who don’t find a place under our social system. Jesus is introducing a new law: love. Jesus is not against la tradition, rather wishes to establish a new tradition based in divine love, as wished by His Father.

All that we should know is, when this Love starts to take root in our existence, all judgment or reproach or accusation, will give way to this Love. It is because of this truth that we are called to work with Christ so that this Loves becomes the source of our life.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 2,18-22.

Gospel text (Mc 2,18-22):

One day, when the disciples of John the Baptist and the Pharisees were fasting, some people asked Jesus, «Why is it that both the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but yours do not?». Jesus answered, «How can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. But the day will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them and on that day they will fast.

»No one sews a piece of new cloth on an old coat, because the new patch will shrink and tear away from the old cloth, making a worse tear. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins, for the wine would burst the skins and then both the wine and the skins would be lost. But new wine, new skins!».

The message

It is easy to follow the way others do and we need courage to remain there and propose a new way. Jesus’ way of proposing a new tradition, a tradition of love and forgiveness which takes us to the original plan of God’s creation, helps us to understand this new teaching. We are in the world and not of the world. Let us not be confused with worldly affairs which work against our spiritual growth.

Every fasting and mortification should lead us closer to Jesus and should help us to understand the unconditional love of God. It is the joy of bridegroom, the metaphor that John Baptist uses as friend of Jesus, should be a model for us to have a deeper relationship with God. Do we have the same joy of being with Jesus?

Amen.

In English

God calls us to participate in His mission and He does it his way. Little Samuel, he grew up in the house of the Lord, is guided and animated by the Holy Spirit, trained and configured in the Lord. Even Eli the high priest was not able to decode the events that happened in his time, including the call of Samuel. We are like him, faithful to God but lost on the way. We are either like this little boy who ran to the wrong person, or like the high priest who is still in his blindness.
Not even the apostles understood their mission when they were called, not even after the death and resurrection of the Lord. It was on the day of Pentecost that they understood their mission: to proclaim the Good News, the love of God. "Behold the Lamb of God. "Who takes away the sin of the world. They open the door and started too announce the Good News, as their master, with divine authority.

We seek the meaning of life, search happiness in our daily lives. As these disciples of John the Baptist's, like Andrew and Simon, we are invited to advance towards the Lord. "Rabbi, where are you staying? "We want to stay with God, and in the Lord. Yet everything we do, everything we think are not consistent with what we would like to be. Somewhere something is wrong.

This is why St. Paul asks us to make our approach from our body, the abode of God, the temple of the Holy Spirit. The purity of the soul begins from the purity of body, that is to say, our gestures, our eyes, our speech, our behavior. Throughout our lives, we invite others to come to us and let them find in us the presence of God, the force that makes us act so. "Come and see. "Here is the invitation to discover the Lord. We have to live in Him and follow Him faithfully to know Him.

What are you looking for? "Was the question that the Lord has asked to the disciples of John the Baptist's. Today it is for us. What are we looking for and where we seek? "We" symbolically means, we must walk together like the children of God. In this week of Christian unity, let us pray for the unity of the people of God. Let us abandon us to the Lord and ask Him to bless us, to accompany us and guide us. Lord gives us the courage to be follow you and the openness to be guided by the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 2,13-17.

Gospel text (Mc 2,13-17):

When Jesus went out again beside the lake, a crowd came to Him and He taught them. As he walked along, he saw a tax collector sitting in his office. This was Levi, the son of Alpheus. Jesus said to him, «Follow me». And Levi got up and followed Him. And it so happened that while Jesus was eating in Levi's house, tax collectors and sinners were sitting with Him and His disciples for there were indeed many of them. But there were also teachers of the Law of the Pharisees' party, among those who followed Jesus, and when they saw Him eating with sinners and tax collectors, they said to his disciples, «Why! He eats with tax collectors and sinners!». Jesus heard them and answered, «Healthy people don't need a doctor, but sick people do. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners».

The message

Jesus knows His mission and He choses, not the best in the eyes of the society, but the best in the eyes of God. By the very fact He went to the house of Mathew, it has disturbed the teachers of the Law. Jesus is teaching them the importance of merci and forgiveness.

In the house of the Lord, all are welcome. If we feel left behind by the society or abandoned by the friends, the Lord will be with us. This response of Jesus does console all of us. «Healthy people don't need a doctor, but sick people do. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners».

Why to hesitate to take His mission and transform it in to our own mission? And all the more, today He needs us.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Marc 2,1-12.

Gospel text (Mc 2,1-12):

Jesus returned to Capernaum. As the news spread that he was at home, so many people gathered that there was no longer room even outside the door.

While Jesus was preaching the Word to them, some people brought a paralyzed man to him. The four men who carried him couldn't get near Jesus because of the crowd, so they opened the roof above the room where Jesus was and, through the hole, lowered the man on his mat. When Jesus saw the faith of these people, he said to the paralytic, «My son, your sins are forgiven».

Now, some teachers of the Law who were sitting there wondered within themselves, «How can he speak like this insulting God? Who can forgive sins except God?».

At once Jesus knew through his spirit what they were thinking and asked, «Why do you wonder? Is it easier to say to this paralyzed man: ‘Your sins are forgiven’, or to say: ‘Rise, take up your mat and walk?’ But now you shall know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins». And he said to the paralytic, «Stand up, take up your mat and go home».

The man rose and, in the sight of all those people, he took up his mat and went out. All of them were astonished and praised God saying, «We have never seen anything like this!».

The message

Jesus never fails to identify the faith of the people. He has seen the invisible demarche of the society so that this poor man could be healed. They were sure that Jesus will heal him and Jesus did. The community is important for Jesus, is important for us too.

What is important for us to learn from this gospel is, the way Jesus looks at the faith of the people and how meanly others judge Jesus. Jesus, understanding the importance of forgiveness of sins does remind us that no healing will be complete without pardon.

It is strange that we call on God as if He is unfaithful, merciless and hard heartedness. Jesus, who follows the will of the Father par excellence, is accused of blaspheming. While looking at these people very stupid, don’t we do the same thing in our relationship with God?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Marc

(Mc 1, 40-45)

En ce temps-là,
un lépreux vint auprès de Jésus ;
« Si tu le veux, tu peux me purifier. »
Saisi de compassion, Jésus étendit la main,
le toucha et lui dit :
« Je le veux, sois purifié. »

Gospel text (Mc 1,40-45):

A leper came to Jesus and begged Him, «If you so will, you can make me clean». Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, «I will; be clean». The leprosy left the man at once and he was made clean. As Jesus sent the man away, he sternly warned him, «Don't tell anyone about this, but go and show yourself to the priest and for the cleansing bring the offering ordered by Moses; in this way you will make your declaration».

However, as soon as the man went out, he began spreading the news everywhere, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter any town. But even though he stayed in the rural areas, people came to him from everywhere.

The message

We all wish to be clean, in a sense pure, purity in all senses, spiritual, and physical. This purification radical that Jesus brings to the society by the Incarnation, helps us to know the holiness of God and His proximity.

This leper was however lucky and there were many still waiting for their turn to be healed. Many good and soft hearted people suffer and still longing for liberation and for some a little space to breath. Sufferings and isolation are the only consolation to such people. It is to them Jesus is telling, «I will; be clean». Sadly they don’t hear.

May be little silence and meditation may help us to identify this loving presence of God, very often in discrete, accompany us, without disturbing our rhythm of life. Jesus will surely will ask us to look around and see how much good people do surround us and how much are we blind to see this accompaniment.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Marc

(Mc 1, 29-39)

et il expulsa beaucoup de démons ;

Jésus leur dit :
« Allons ailleurs, dans les villages voisins,
afin que là aussi je proclame l’Évangile ;

In English

Gospel text (Mc 1,29-39):

As soon as Jesus and his disciples left the synagogue, Jesus went to the home of Simon and Andrew with James and John. As Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed with fever, they immediately told Him about her. Jesus went to her and taking her by the hand, raised her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.

That evening at sundown, people brought to Jesus all the sick and those who had evil spirits: the whole town was pressing around the door. Jesus healed many who had various diseases, and drove out many demons; but he did not let them speak, for they knew who he was.

Very early in the morning, before daylight, Jesus went off to a lonely place where He prayed. Simon and the others went out, too, searching for him; and when they found him they said, «Everyone is looking for you». Then Jesus answered, «Let's go to the nearby villages so that I may preach there too; for that is why I came». So Jesus set out to preach in all the synagogues throughout Galilee; he also cast out demons.

The message

Let us imitate our brother, master and see how he manages His day. Fully involved in action, and fully in contemplation, Jesus shares His day just like any one of us. Jesus finds the source of His energy from the Father. It is from this contemplation that His action finds its reason to be.

Without blaming Martha, Jesus is advising her to listen to the world of God and respond. Otherwise, the danger is that we may be fully involved in charitable activities and end up in complaining about others, like Martha. Let us be wise and listen to our Lord.

Very often we tend to look up to heaven in prayer and fail to see the talents that the Lord has already given to us. If we decide to look up, it is not to ask, but to give thanks to the Lord for all that we have received. This liberty will give us the courage to go beyond where we are, and will help us to freely accomplish the will of the Father, ever ready to move.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Marc

(Mc 1, 21-28)

Jésus l’interpella vivement :
« Tais- toi ! Sors de cet homme. »

Gospel text (Mc 1,21-28):

Jesus and his disciples went into the town of Capernaum and began to teach in the synagogue during the sabbath assemblies. The people were astonished at the way he taught, for he spoke as one having authority and not like the teachers of the Law. It happened that a man with an evil spirit was in their synagogue and he shouted, «What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: You are the Holy One of God». Then Jesus faced him and said with authority, «Be silent and come out of this man!». The evil spirit shook the man violently and, with a loud shriek, came out of him.

All the people were astonished and they wondered, «What is this? With what authority he preaches! He even orders evil spirits and they obey Him!». And Jesus' fame spread throughout all the country of Galilee.

The message

This is one of the habitudes of Jesus: teach in the synagogue. He teaches with authority, because, He is the master of all teaching. Do we see in Him as our teacher and as a faithful, do we listen to His words?

God has shared His authority with the humanity, with liberty of discernment. We have to verify the way we use these authorities we have received from God. When this authority is used for the well-being of our brothers and sisters, then, Jesus will certainly approve this. How do we use our authorities? Like Jesus we should work against the bad and evil, not against people. Let us learn from Jesus, to do good.

Après l’arrestation de Jean,
Jésus partit pour la Galilée
proclamer l’Évangile de Dieu ;
il disait :
« Les temps sont accomplis :
le règne de Dieu est tout proche.
Convertissez- vous
et croyez à l’Évangile. »

In English

After John was arrested, Jesus went into Galilee and began preaching the Good News of God. He said, «The time has come; the kingdom of God is at hand. Change your ways and believe the Good News». As Jesus was walking along the shore of Lake Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net in the lake, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, «Follow me, and I will make you fish for people». At once, they left their nets and followed Him. Jesus went a little farther on and saw James and John, the sons of Zebedee; they were in their boat mending their nets. Immediately, Jesus called them and they followed Him, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men.

The message

Jesus is calling each and every one of us through his disciples to announce the Kingdom of God, a new kingdom which will change our lives. The change comes as fruit from our participation in the baptism of the Lord. By this baptism we promise to God that we will listen to Him and do all that He will ask us to do.

Today He is asking us to follow Him, follow Him in the way of love, compassion and forgiveness. For our surprise, he didn’t choose the priests or any great personality of the society, rather very simple fishermen and rejected tax-collector. If you feel that you are simple and rejected by the people around, don’t resist yourself to say YES to the Lord. Say humbly like Mary, Lord let thy will be done.
