Gospel text

(Lk 21,12-19):

Jesus said to his disciples, «People will lay their hands on you and persecute you; you will be delivered to the Jewish courts and put in prison, and for my sake you will be brought before kings and governors. This will be your opportunity to bear witness. So keep this in mind: do not worry in advance about what to answer, for I will give you words and wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents, and brothers, by relatives and friends, and some of you will be put to death. But even though you are hated by all for my name's sake, not a hair of your head will perish. Through perseverance you will possess your own selves».

The Application

The readings of these days prepare us for a great event that we will celebrate in a few days, starting from advent towards Christmas. They invite us to discern, to discern everything before the Lord, with a divine approach, filled with love and compassion.

This commitment is conditioned the way we welcome the divine love, the love we have received from the Lord, right from the begining of the creation, renewed and revealed in Christ. Saint John tells us, 'God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, not to judge us, but through him, may the world be saved. That every one know this loving God and be able to respond to this love, by their love.

Perseverance is a fruit of certainty, and certainty is a fruit of faith. Faith helps us to understand this divine love and goodness. Since we are children of this God who loves us, in his love we remain faithful. It is in this fidelity that we persevere and discover, how much God accompanies us discreetly, in our daily life.

Action of the day : Cherish the divine love and be faithful.

«Through perseverance you will possess your own selves»

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench

(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we pay attention to this short but sharp sentence of our Lord, which sticks into our soul and makes us wonder: why perseverance is so important? why does Jesus tell us our salvation depends upon the exercise of this virtue?

Because the disciple is no more than his Master —«you will be hated by all for my name's sake» (Lk 21:17)—, and if the Lord was a sign of contradiction, we, his disciples, must necessarily be one too. The belligerents will get hold of the Kingdom of God, those who fight against the enemies of the soul, those who energetically combat, as St. Josemaria Escriva liked to say, “this most beautiful war of peace and love”, which Christian life consists of. All roses have thorns, and the way to Heaven is not without difficulties and obstacles. This is why, without the cardinal virtue of fortitude, our good intentions would turn out unfruitful. And perseverance is part of fortitude. Perseverance, concretely, drives us to the strength we need to carry our contradictions with joy.

Perseverance, in its maximum degree, is accomplished at the Cross. This is why, perseverance confers freedom by granting the possession of oneself through love. Christ's promise is indefectible: «Through perseverance you will possess your own selves!» (Lk 21:19), and this is so because what is saving us is the Cross. It is the strength of love that gives each one of us the patient and joyous acceptance of God's will, when, in a first moment, it upsets —as it happens at the Cross— our poor human will.

Only in a first moment, because afterwards, the overflowing energy of perseverance is liberated to help us understand the difficult science of the Cross. This is why, perseverance engenders patience, which goes much beyond simple resignation. Even more so. It has nothing to do with stoical attitudes. Patience decisively contributes to understand that the Cross is, well before pain, essentially love.

Our Mother in Heaven, who understood better than anyone else this saving truth, will help us understanding it too.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 21,12-19):

Abbé Antoni CAROL i Hostench

(Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Lk 21,5-11):

While some people were talking about the Temple, remarking that it was adorned with fine stonework and rich gifts, Jesus said to them, «The days will come when there shall not be left one stone upon another of all that you now admire; all will be torn down».

And they asked him, «Master, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is about to take place?». Jesus then said, «Take care not to be deceived, for many will come claiming my title and saying: ‘I am he, the Messiah; the time is at hand’. Do not follow them. When you hear of wars and troubled times, don't be frightened; for all this must happen first, even though the end is not so soon». And Jesus said, «Nations will fight each other and kingdom will oppose kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and plagues; in many places strange and terrifying signs from heaven will be seen».

The Application

We have a feeling that the last day of the apocalypse is approaching. The news of the day affirms our doubts. Fear and worry is dominating our inner being that our thinking and doing is influenced. Yet today's gospel gives us an answer to this question: do not be afraid. Everything can disappear, not the Word of God and the hope it brings us.

If we look at today’s gosepl we will understand that, we must be faithful as christians, to the commandment of love and apply this divine plan in a radical way. Through our love, as St. John tells us in his letter, let others discover that we are disciples of the Lord, friends of God, God of love.

Are we right to be afraid of this last day, the day of judgement? Jesus tells us, NO. The terrifying signs tell us the need for our fidelity to the divine teaching and the urgency of reconciliation. Be converted and believe in Jesus, the Son of the living God. May we be the children of the Light, bearing this Light that takes away the darkness.

Action of the day : Believe in the Gospel.

Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers:

First signs of the end times,

by Maximus of Turin

"Perhaps you are anxious, brothers and sisters, at the fact that we hear constantly of the tumult of wars and the onsets of battles. Perhaps your love is still more anxious since these are taking place in our times. The reason is the closer we are to the destruction of the world, the closer we are to the kingdom of the Savior. The Lord himself says, 'In the last days nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. When you see wars, earthquakes and famines, know that the kingdom of God is at hand.'This nearness of wars shows us that Christ is near." (excerpt from SERMON 85.1)

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 21,5-11):

+ Abbé Antoni ORIOL i Tataret

(Vic, Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mt 12,46-50):

While Jesus was still talking to the people, his mother and his brothers wanted to speak to him and they waited outside. So someone said to him, «Your mother and your brothers are just outside; they want to speak with you». Jesus answered, «Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?». Then He pointed to his disciples and said, «Look! Here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is for me brother, sister, or mother».

The Application

In celebrating the presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we recognize not only the mysteries of the Incarnation revealed in Mary, but also the divine preparation for the only-begotten Son to find a place worthy of Him among men. Through this feast the Church of the Lord affirms that in Mary, the Mother of God, the humanity of the day still finds worthy to welcome Christ in him, provided that this humanity listens to the Word of God and puts this Word into practice.

God has His own way of doing and inviting us, without giving any details of the divine projet to us. Our faith in God, will teach us to trust the project and go ahead in life, though at present nothing look as a posible or practical project. God had his way of preparing Mary and supporting her, by preparing Joseph to accompany her, for a possible misadventure.

We deeply believe, we are in formation, like Mary, for the very special project, very dear to God, the salvation of the world.  We must learn from Mary to put ourselves at the service of God, through our concrete and positive commitment to human development. The more we put ourselves on the path of divine love and mercy, as Jesus asked us to do, the more we will be able to participate in the fulfillment of the divine will, the salvation of mankind. May this feast, in these troubled moments,  bring us peace and hope.

Action of the day : Trust in the Lord.

«Whoever does what my Father in heaven wants is my brother and sister and mother»

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench

(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today the Church remembers the moment when the little Mary completely surrendered her heart to the Most High. Holy Mary was full of grace and without any hint of sin from the first moment of her conception in her mother’s womb, St. Anne. Evidently she was not aware of this status, but she certainly was fully unfailing.

The Christian tradition is convinced that Mary, being very young, decided to fully dedicate herself in soul and body to God. In fact, this is why in such day as today, but in 543, in Jerusalem, the dedication of the church of Holy Mary la Nueva took place.

How singular the ways of God are! Quite often so subtle but always effective. In ancient times it was totally unthinkable that a girl should not be given in marriage. A "single" girl, she alone, but what Mary intended was rather the opposite. So, these are the ways of the Holy Spirit! The young Mary was betrothed to Joseph. No doubt the Divine Providence had prepared a holy man – whom we also imagine young – who would be able to take care of Mary "as God commands."

We do not know how, but we can assume that Mary and Joseph had agreed to give themselves completely to God by sharing a "virgin marriage" (something also unthinkable). If it was not through this peculiar way, how could the virginity of St. Mary be protected? Surely St. Joseph was the only Jewish boy capable of accepting the mission of protecting Mary's virginity through a virgin marriage. Both of them, as brothers, fully dedicated to the will of God.

Finally, it turned out that such a peculiar marriage - virginal - was the precise instrument God had prepared to "send" His Son "born of a woman, born under the Law" (Gal 4:4). "Mary first conceived Christ in her heart before conceiving Him in her womb" (St. Augustine). We too, in imitation of St. Mary, can conceive Jesus in our hearts through faith and obedience to God, since «Whoever does what my Father in heaven wants is my brother and sister and mother» (Matt. 12:50).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 12,46-50):

Abbé Antoni CAROL i Hostench

Abbé Ramon CORTS i Blay

(Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Lk 19,45-48):

Jesus entered the Temple area and began to drive out the merchants. And He said to them, «God says in the Scriptures: ‘My house shall be a house of prayer’: but you have turned it into a den of robbers».Jesus was teaching every day in the Temple. The chief priests and teachers of the Law wanted to kill him and the elders of the Jews as well, but they were unable to do anything, for all the people were listening to him and hanging on his words.

The Application

Jesus enters the Temple and by His presence He purifies it. The Temple is God's dwelling place. Our heart is also God's dwelling place and we must let Jesus enter in to our heart and let our heart be cleansed by His presence

Expulsion is a violent act and this violence against evil and against the master of evil is well justified. We must learn to act like Jesus, against our jealousy, against our hatred, against our individualism, etc. Very often we slip without saying anything and by our silence we let evil  perpetuate in our hearts.

Jesus would like our courtyard to be a meeting place. Since our heart is a place of encounter and since the first encounter is with God, every human encounter should be a divine encounter. May our heart be a house of prayer.

Action of the day : Keep you thinking pure

«My house shall be a house of prayer»

Fr. Josep LAPLANA OSB

(Montserrat, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, Jesus' gesture is prophetic. As the old prophets used to do, He makes a symbolic action, full of future implications. By throwing away from the temple the merchants selling the victims for their offerings and evoking that «my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples» (Is 56:7), Jesus was announcing the new status He was about to commence, where the sacrifice of animals was out of question. St. John will define this new cultural relationship as «God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth» (Jn 4:24). The figure must give way to reality. St. Thomas Aquinas poetically said: «Et antiquum documentum / novo cedat ritui» («Lo! over ancient forms departing / newer rites of grace prevail»).

The New Rites are Jesus' Word. This is why St. Luke has joined to the scene of the purification of the temple Jesus preaching there every day. The new cult is centered in the prayer and in the audition of God's Word. But, in fact, the center's center of the Christian institution is the living person of the very Jesus, with his own flesh offered and his own blood shed at the Cross and given to us in the Eucharist. St. Thomas also beautifully remarks it: «Recumbens cum fratribus (...) se dat suis manibus» («Seated with His chosen band (...) gives Himself with His own hand»).

In the New Testament Jesus inaugurates, there is no need for veal or lamb merchants. In the same way as «all the people were listening to him and hanging on his words» (Lk 19:48), we do not have to go to the temple to make any sacrifices, but to receive Jesus, the true lamb sacrificed once for all when he offered himself for us (cf. Heb 7:27), and to join our life to His.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 19,45-48):

Gospel text

(Lk 19,41-44):

When Jesus had come in sight of the city, He wept over it and said, ‘If only today you knew the ways of peace! But now your eyes are held from seeing. Yet days will come upon you when your enemies will surround you with barricades and shut you in and press on you from every side. And they will dash you to the ground and your children with you, and leave not a stone within you, for you did not recognize the time and the visitation of your God».

The Application

Yesterday while walking I was meditating on the chance that we have as christians, that we have the faith to look for at the moments of pain and agony. This faith gives us the hope in the eternal divine goodness. A God of mercy and compassion. We are blessed to have a divine revelation and promise of eschatological joy.

What a deep divine sadness that man has not been able to recognize the Savior, who dwells in him.  Since he has not wanted to recognize the divine presence in his life, man lives a life of dismay and easily loses himself in little things without hope.   This is no longer a simple cry from the past of 2000 years, but it is valid even today.

Yes, we say that it is valid what God is crying out in this moment of crisis. Hospitals are full of the sick, small shopkeepers are closing their stores, many have lost their jobs and men who are well, are walking as normal. God tells us, if you become aware of all that you can do, by your actions and gestures, you can bring much relief to society.

If we say that it is valid that man does not apply the faith he received at his baptism and he no longer listens to the Holy Spirit who speaks to him all the time. With the small means that we have, we can, like a mustard seed, make a new world, so that the Kingdom of God may take root in our society.

Let us give thanks to God, for the people around us, for the technology that helps us, for all the goods we have today. May our lives themselves be a thanksgiving to God.

Action of the day : Live a live of gratitude.

Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers:

Jesus fulfills the beatitude for those who weep,

by Origen of Alexandria (185-254 AD)

"When our Lord and Savior approached Jerusalem, he saw the city and wept... By his example, Jesus confirms all the Beatitudes that he speaks in the Gospel. By his own witness, he confirms what he teaches. 'Blessed are the meek,' he says. He says something similar to this of himself: 'Learn from me, for I am meek.' 'Blessed are the peacemakers.' What other man brought as much peace as my Lord Jesus, who 'is our peace,' who 'dissolves hostility' and 'destroys it in his own flesh' (Ephesians 2:14-15). 'Blessed are those who suffer persecution because of justice.'

"No one suffered such persecution because of justice as did the Lord Jesus, who was crucified for our sins. The Lord therefore exhibited all the Beatitudes in himself. For the sake of this likeness, he wept, because of what he said, 'Blessed are those who weep,' to lay the foundations for this beatitude as well. He wept for Jerusalem and said,'If only you had known on that day what meant peace for you! But now it is hidden from your eyes,' and the rest, to the point where he says, 'Because you did not know the time of your visitation'" (excerpt from HOMILY ON THE GOSPEL OF LUKE 38.1-2)
