Gospel text

(Lk 14,1-6):

One Sabbath Jesus had gone to eat a meal in the house of a leading Pharisee, and He was carefully watched. In front of him was a man suffering from dropsy; so Jesus asked the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees, «Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?». But no one answered. Jesus then took the man, healed him and sent him away. And he addressed them, «If your lamb or your ox falls into a well on a Sabbath day, who among you doesn't hurry to pull it out?». And they could not answer.

The Application

The Christion life should not be only oriented by laws and regulations, though they are very important for our daily life. Since it is a life of love for God and for God’s people, everything should born of this love. It is in this love that we search what each and every one of us should do in our daily life.

If our life is oriented by God’s love, then there is no question of keeping silence, a mysterious silence to God’s question of what have you done to your brother? To our daily prayers,  God doesn’t keep silence though it may appear to us, as if God is not acting. Even in His silence, God is in parfait action.

Jesus by this act confirms to us that God’s deed of love and mercy doesn’t have a limit. Each and every one of us are the beloved ones of God. He will break any laws to save us, because He has given His only begotten Son on the Cross for our salvation.

Action of the day: be your acts be an act of love and charity.

«Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?»

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench

(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we will center our attention on the piercing question Jesus asked the Pharisees: «Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?» (Lk 14:4), and in their very significant silence, as per St. Luke: «But no one answered» (Lk 14:4).

Many are the Gospel episodes where Our Lord reproaches their hypocrisy to the Pharisees. It is quite noteworthy how God's outstanding interest in substantiating up to which point He dislikes this sin —false appearances, deceitful actions—, which is placed at the antipodes of Christ's praise to Nathaniel: «Here is a true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him» (Jn 1:47). God loves the heart's simplicity, the spirit's naivety while, on the other hand, He rejects with energy the intricacies, the shady looks, the double standards, the hypocrisy.

That which is significant in the Lord's question and in the Pharisees' silent reply is the bad conscience they had, deep inside. There was a man suffering from dropsy who was looking forward to be healed by Jesus. The fulfillment of the Judaic Law —ludicrous concentration on the letter with total disdain of the spirit— and the empty presumption of their blameless behavior, brings them to appear shocked by the attitude of Christ who, carried away by his merciful heart, does not allow any legal formalisms to prevent him from healing he who is ailing.

The Pharisees realize that their hypocrite behavior cannot be justified and this is what keeps them silent. In this passage a very clear lesson is shining through: the need to understand that saintliness is to follow Christ —to full enamorment— and not to coldly fulfill some legal precepts. The Commandments are holly because they come all the way directly from God's infinite Wisdom, but it is quite possible to live them in a legalist and empty way, and it is then when the incongruence appears of pretending to follow God and ending up by going behind ourselves.

Let the charming simplicity of the Mother of God direct our lives.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 14,1-6):

Abbé Antoni CAROL i Hostench

Gospel text

(Lk 13,31-35):

Some Pharisees came to Jesus and gave him this warning, «Leave this place and go on your way, for Herod wants to kill you». Jesus said to them, «Go and give that fox my answer: ‘I drive out demons and heal today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my course!’. Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and for a little longer, for it would not be fitting for a prophet to be killed outside Jerusalem.

»O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you slay the prophets and stone your apostles! How often have I tried to bring together your children, as a bird gathers her young under her wings, but you refused! From now on you will be left with your temple and you will no longer see me until the time when you will say: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord».

The Application

Though apparently this warning seems to be with a good intention and at the profit of Jesus, Jesus affirms to us that there is no more good will from these people and they too wish that Jesus disappears from their territory.

Each one of us would like to save our face, showing the weakness of others. Jesus sees this hypocrisy of the people, and He asks us to pray, to pray that we are righteous before God, a God who loves us.

This God comes to us, so that we discover his presence and can respond positively to his call to love our neighbour. It was in this love of neighbour (lack of this love) that the people of Jerusalem refused to protect Jesus and worked not only against Jesus, but also against love.

Yet Jesus tells us that, like his Father, he will continue his work, doing his Father's will. We are called to imitate this behaviour of Jesus, so that like Jesus, we can, with our limitations, do the will of His Father.

Action of the day: Try to save the people who do good to the society.

«Jerusalem, Jerusalem! How often have I tried to bring together your children, but you refused!»

Today, we can admire Jesus' resolve to accomplish the mission his Father in Heaven has entrusted him with. Nothing would stop him: «I drive out demons and heal today and tomorrow» (Lk 13:32). With this attitude, the Lord set out the rules giving guidance on how the messengers of the Gospel should have to behave in front of the persecutions they would be facing through the centuries to come: not to be afraid of any temporal power. St. Augustine says that, in troubled times, the shepherds are not to abandon their flock: neither those who will suffer martyrdom nor those who will survive. Just like the Good Shepherd who, when He sees the wolf coming, does not desert the flock, but risks and lays down his own life for the sheep. But, realizing the fervor with which all the pastors of the Church were willing to shed their own blood, He points out that the best thing to do will be to draw lots to see who will have to suffer martyrdom and who will be spared to look, later on, after the survivors.

Unfortunately, in our time and with undue frequency, we hear the news of new religious persecutions, tribal violence or ethnic riots in the Third World. Western embassies advise their fellow citizens to move over from these areas and repatriate their personnel. The only ones who remain are the missionary and volunteer organizations, who feel they would betray “their own faithful” should they desert them in those moments of trouble.

«O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you slay the prophets and stone your apostles! How often have I tried to bring together your children, as a bird gathers her young under her wings, but you refused! Look, your house is left to you desolate» (Lk 34:35). This lamentation of the Lord has very especial and sad connotations for us Christians of the 21st century, due to the bloody conflict between Palestinians and Jews. This area of the Near East is for us, the Holy Land, the land of Jesus and Mary. And the clamor for the peace everywhere has to be more intense and sincere for the restoration of peace between Israel and Palestine.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 13,31-35):

Abbé Àngel Eugeni PÉREZ i Sánchez

(Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Lk 6,12-19):

Jesus went out into the hills to pray, spending the whole night in prayer with God. When day came, He called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them whom He called apostles: Simon, whom He named Peter, and his brother Andrew, James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; Matthew and Thomas; James son of Alpheus and Simon called the Zealot; Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who would be the traitor.

Coming down the hill with them, Jesus stood on a level place. Many of his disciples were there and a large crowd of people who had come from all parts of Judea and Jerusalem and from the coastal cities of Tyre and Sidon. They gathered to hear him and be healed of their diseases; likewise people troubled by evil spirits were healed. The entire crowd tried to touch him because of the power that went out from him and healed them all.

«Went out into the hills to pray»

+ Fr. Albert TAULÉ i Viñas

(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we may contemplate a full day in the life of Jesus. A life with two clear sides: prayer and action. If, as Christians, we are to imitate Jesus' life, we cannot prescind of any of these two dimensions. All Christians, even those who are consecrated to a contemplative life, have, and must have, certain moments for praying and certain others for action. The length of time for each one may, of course, vary. We can see that even friars and nuns in close orders devote a good part of their time to some kind of work. On the other hand, those of us that are more “secular”, if we wish to imitate Jesus, we should not carry out a frantic activity without spreading it with a prayer. St. Jerome says: «Even though the Apostle ordered us to pray all the time, (...) we must devote to this exercise certain previously determined hours».

Did Jesus need these lengthy hours of lonely prayer, when everybody else was asleep? Theologians study the psychology of Jesus man: up to which point had He direct access to divinity and up to which point was He «one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin» (He 4:15). To the point we consider him closer to us, his praying “practice”, must be evidently a clear example for us.

Once we have well established our praying, it only remains for us to imitate him in action. In today's fragment, we can see him “organizing the Church”, that is, choosing those who were to be his future evangelists, the followers of his mission on earth: «When day came, He called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them whom He called apostles» (Lk 6:13). We find him, later on, healing all type of sicknesses. «Everyone in the crowd sought to touch him because power came forth from him and healed them all» (Lk 6:19), the Evangelist says. So that our identification with him may be complete, we only need that this power to heal everybody may also come forth from us. This will only be possible if we remain in him so that we can bear plenty of fruit (cf. Jn 15:4).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 6,12-19):

+ Abbé Albert TAULÉ i Viñas

(Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Lk 13,18-21):

Jesus continued speaking, «What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? Imagine a person who has taken a mustard seed and planted it in the garden. The seed has grown and become like a small tree, so that the birds of the air shelter in its branches». And Jesus said again, «What is the kingdom of God like? Imagine a woman who has taken yeast and hidden it in three measures of flour until it is all leavened».

The Application

How do I understand the gospel of the day and how will I apply it in my life? First of all, I believe that my life is totally rooted in divine love and through my daily life I make it visible to others, so that they can discover in me this God who loves them. In this way, my life is not only a response to divine love (love received) and it becomes by itself, a sign for others, (a love that gives itself, a light that shines for others, by its own nature.

For this, we do not need a great grace and blessing, but a simple recognition of the divine presence within us, like a mustard seed or leaven.  This divine presence which enriches me with the divine love, transforms me and through me it transforms the whole world.

If our life becomes a response to this divine love, revealed in the death and resurrection of Christ, we can already feel God's Kingdom among us and within us. It is here that we understand that every individual is a member of our own body, who need our personal attention, without any partially. Submission to one another, with due respect and freedom, is already an act of love.

Action of the day: Today be a day of love for God.

«What is the kingdom of God like?»

+ Fr. Francisco Lucas MATEO Seco

(Pamplona, Navarra, Spain)

Today, the liturgical texts, through these two parables, place before our eyes one of the characteristics of the Kingdom of God: it is something that flourishes slowly —as a mustard seed— but, eventually, grows to offer shelter to the birds in its trees. Tertulian said it like this: «We come from yesterday and we fill everything». With this parable, Our Lord encourages us to patience, fortitude and hope. These virtues are especially necessary for those who devote themselves to propagate the Kingdom of God. We must be patient, and with God's grace and human cooperation, wait for the planted seed to grow while profoundly embedding its roots in the good soil to gradually become a tree. In the first place, we need to have faith in the virtuality —fecundity— contained in the seed of the Kingdom of God. This seed is the Word; it is also the Eucharist that is planted in us through Communion. Our Lord Jesus Christ compared himself to «a kernel of wheat that falls to the ground and dies (…). But if it dies, it produces many seeds» (Jn 12:24).

The Kingdom of God, our Lord goes on, is similar to «the yeast a woman has taken and hidden in three measures of flour until it is all leavened» (Lk 13:21). Here also the yeast capacity to leaven all the dough is mentioned. This is what happens with “the rest of Israel” which the Old Testament mentions: the rest will have to save and leaven all the people. Continuing on with the parable, we only need the yeast inside the dough, getting to the people, to be like salt that preserves from corruption and makes all food to taste (cf. Mt 5:13). Time is also of essence so that it can carry out with its function by and by.

Parables encouraging patience and the hopeful certainty; parables referring to the Kingdom of God and to the Church, and that are also applied to the growth of this same Kingdom in each of us.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 13,18-21):

Gospel text

(Lk 13,10-17):

Jesus was teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath and a crippled woman was there. An evil spirit had kept her bent for eighteen years so that she could not straighten up at all. On seeing her, Jesus called her and said, «Woman, you are freed from your infirmity». Then He laid his hands upon her and immediately she was made straight and praised God.

But the ruler of the synagogue was indignant because Jesus had performed this healing on the Sabbath day and he said to the people, «There are six days in which to work; come on those days to be healed and not on the Sabbath». But the Lord replied, «You hypocrites! Everyone of you unties his ox or his donkey on the Sabbath and leads it out of the barn to give it water. And here you have a daughter of Abraham whom Satan had bound for eighteen years. Should she not be freed from her bonds on the Sabbath?». When Jesus said this, all his opponents felt ashamed. But the people rejoiced at the many wonders that happened through him.

«But the ruler of the synagogue was indignant because Jesus had performed this healing on the Sabbath day...»

Fr. Francesc JORDANA i Soler

(Mirasol, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we can see how Jesus carries out an action that loudly proclaims his interpretation of messianic fulfillment. And how, in front of it, the ruler of the synagogue gets outraged and scolds people for coming to be healed on a Saturday: «There are six days in which to work; come on those days to be healed and not on the Sabbath» (Lk 13:14).

I would like to center this commentary upon this character's attitude. I have always been surprised at how, before an evident miracle, there is always someone who is able to close his eyes in such a way that he remains totally unconcerned. Had he not seen what happened or what it means, it would be the same. The reason being, though, that many Jews in those days had a wrong experience of intermediations. For different reasons —anthropological, cultural, divine designs— it is unavoidable that between God and man some intermediations must exist. The problem is that, some Jews made of this intermediation something absolute. With the end result that the intermediation did not bring them into communication with God but, rather, they remained stuck in the very intermediation. They forgot the final true meaning and stayed put, instead, in the intent. And, thus, God cannot pass on to them neither his grace, nor his gifts and love, their religious experience not enriching, then, their life.

All this took them to live a rigorous religious experience, shutting down their god within strict limits. They manufactured a custom-made god, which they did not let into their lives. In their religiosity they believed all was well provided the stayed within certain rules. We can, thus, understand Jesus' reaction: «You hypocrites! Everyone of you unties his ox or his donkey on the Sabbath and leads it out of the barn to give it water?» (Lk 13:15). Jesus uncovers the absurdity of this wrong experience of the Sabbath.

God's words should help us to examine our own religious experience and to find out whether the intermediations we use actually bring us into communication with God and with life. St. Augustine's phrase, «Love and do what you will», can only be understood as the correct experience of intermediations.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 13,10-17):
