Gospel text

(Lk 12,13-21):

Someone in the crowd spoke to Jesus, «Master, tell my brother to share with me the family inheritance». He replied, «My friend, who has appointed me as your judge or your attorney?». Then Jesus said to the people, «Be on your guard and avoid every kind of greed, for even though you have many possessions, it is not that which gives you life».

And Jesus continued with this story, «There was a rich man and his land had produced a good harvest. He thought: ‘What shall I do? For I am short of room to store my harvest. So this is what he planned: I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones to store all this grain, which is my wealth. Then I may say to myself: My friend, you have a lot of good things put by for many years. Rest, eat, drink and enjoy yourself’. But God said to him: ‘You fool! This very night your life will be taken from you; tell me who shall get all you have put aside?’. This is the lot of the one who stores up riches instead of amassing for God».

«Even though you have many possessions, it is not that which gives you life»

Fr. Lluc TORCAL Monk of Santa Maria de Poblet

(Santa Maria de Poblet, Tarragona, Spain)

Today, if we do not close our eyes and our ears, the Gospel will strike us through its clarity and directness: «Be on your guard and avoid every kind of greed, for even though you have many possessions, it is not that which gives you life» (Lk 12:15). Where does man's life come from?

We know quite well where Jesus' life comes from, because He, himself, has told us: «For just as the Father has life in himself, so also he gave to his Son the possession of life in himself» (Jn 5:26). We all know that Jesus' life does not come only from the Father, but it also consists in abiding by his will, as the Father's will is the nourishment for Jesus, and it amounts to carry out His work of salvation among men, by offering his life for his friends, which is the greatest sign of love. Jesus' life is, therefore, a life totally received from the Father and totally handed over to the same Father and, through the love to the Father, to all men. How can human life, therefore, be sufficient per se? How can it be denied that our life is a gift we have received and, because of that, if nothing else, we have to be grateful for it? «Nobody can claim to be the master of his own life» (St. Jerome).

Following this same logic, the missing question could only be: how can our life have any meaning at all if it is a life turned in upon itself, and is satisfied by saying: «My friend, you have a lot of good things put by for many years. Rest, eat, drink and enjoy yourself» (Lk 12:19)? If Jesus' life is a gift received and a gift always given with love, our own life —that we cannot deny we have also received— ought to become, following Jesus' life, a total gift to God and to our brothers, because «Whoever loves his life loses it» (Jn 12:25).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 12,13-21):

Today, as we celebrate World Mission Sunday, we are called to meditate on the issue of paying taxes to the foreign sovereign and on Jesus' response 'hypocritic' .  Apparently a question of fact, with a bad thought behind it. No wonder Jesus approached this question with courage  and decided to treat it with all due respect to the coin and its holder.  While dealing with the issue, Jesus invites them to participate in the resolution of the problem by asking them to bring a coin.

Jesus is not a revolutionary, he is there to do God's will. Since the civil authorities are there to help and accompany us, God cannot deny their rightful role in today's society. Thus, Jesus invites them to look at the civil authorities with the respect due to them and to honor them for their usefulness and service.  He reminds them that they hold something useful and important and asks them to give it what is due to them.

If God wants us to respect civil authority, it is not blind obedience, but an intelligent approach, discerning what is useful and genuine, for human development. To give to Caesar what belongs to him is a general statement with a very rich implication that we can apply in every spear of life. To give to each one of them, not only for what he is able to give or to give, is simply for what he is. In this sense, our approach to the preservation of creation is only an evangelical duty.

How can we understand the expression "to give to God what belongs to God" when everything that exists belongs to God?  As a Christian and believer, I understand this as the best divine teaching, at the heart of all that is visible and invisible. To give to God is to give oneself fully to the service of God. It is a status of awareness of our divine identity and a concrete commitment as a baptized Christian. It is to be constantly aware of the ongoing impulse of the Holy Spirit in our bodies, God's dwelling place. It is there that we become aware of our calling, dedication and mission. Called, chosen and sent by God to the whole world. To give to God what belongs to God is also to nourish our desire and thirst for God.  Believing that our very existence depends on God's generosity and goodness.

On this Mission Sunday, I wish to invite you all to pray with me. "In celebrating this Eucharist, we want, Lord, to give back to you what belongs to you. We offer you all the acts of faith, hope and charity that enamel our lives and those of all our brothers and sisters. With you, we commit ourselves to do everything so that love may prevail over hatred and violence. Be with us so that the Gospel may be proclaimed throughout the world. Amen".

Gospel text

(Lk 12,8-12):

Jesus said to his disciples, «I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before people, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God. But the one who denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God. There will be pardon for the one who criticizes the Son of Man, but there will be no pardon for the one who slanders the Holy Spirit.

»When you are brought before the synagogues, governors and rulers, don’t worry about how you will defend yourself or what to say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you have to say».

«Whoever acknowledges me before people, the Son of Man will also acknowledge»

Fr. Alexis MANIRAGABA

(Ruhengeri, Rwanda)

Today, the Lord arouses our faith and hope in Him. Jesus forestalls that we will have to appear before the Heavenly Host to be examined. And whoever has spoken out in favor of Jesus by adhering to His mission «the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God» (Lk 12:8). Such public confession is made out in words, in deeds and throughout our life.

This interpellation of the confession is even more necessary and urgent in our times, when there still are people who do not want to hear the voice of God nor follow His way . However, the confession of our faith will be strongly followed. Therefore, let us not be confessors for fear of punishment - that will be harsher for apostates--nor for the copious reward reserved to the faithful. Our testimony is necessary and urgent for life in this world, and God himself demands it from us, as St. John Chrysostom said: «God is not satisfied with our inward faith; He asks for an outward and public confession, to boost us to a greater confidence and love».

Our confession is sustained by the power and assurance of its Spirit who is active inside us and protects us. The acknowledgement of Jesus Christ before His angels is vital since this fact will allow us to see Him face to face, live with Him and be flooded by His light. At the same time, the opposite will be nothing else but suffering and losing our life, to be deprived of His light and dispossessed of all our possessions. Let us, therefore, plead for the grace of avoiding any denial be it out of fear of torture or ignorance; out of heresies, of sterile faith or of lack of responsibility; or just because we would like to avoid martyrdom. Let us be strong; the Holy Spirit is with us! And "With the Holy Spirit, Mary is always present (...) and she has made possible the missionary outburst which took place at Pentecost» (Pope Francis).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 12,8-12):

Gospel text

(Lk 12,1-7):

Such a numerous crowd had gathered that they crushed one another. Then Jesus spoke to his disciples in this way, «Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy. Nothing is covered that will not be uncovered, or hidden that will not be made known. Whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in daylight, and what you have whispered in hidden places, will be proclaimed from the housetops. I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who put to death the body and after that can do no more. But I will tell you whom to fear: Fear the One who after killing you is able to throw you into hell. This one you must fear. Don't you get five sparrows for two pennies? Yet not one of them has been forgotten by God. Even the hairs of your head have been numbered. So do not fear: are you not worth more than a flock of sparrows?».

The Application

If there remains a challenge for many sincere and loving people to progress in their spiritual and social life, it is their fear and anxiety.  Today, Jesus reassures these people. Let us not have this fear, for the Lord is with us. Mother Theresa of Kolkotta says that we are called to be faithful, sincere than successful.

At the same time, we should have a reverential fear that we will not depart from divine love. This fear is healthy, which helps us to build a healthy and meaningful relationship with God, with a God of love and compassion, rather than a God of justice and judgment.

Action of the day : Be sincere and courageous.

«So do not fear: are you not worth more than a flock of sparrows?»

Fr. Salomon BADATANA Mccj

(Wau, South Sudan)

Today, we contemplate in the Gospel our Lord Jesus Christ who turns to the crowds after confronting the Jewish religious authorities who are the Pharisees and the scribes. The Gospel tells us that the crowd was so big that they crushed one another. It is clear here that they were hangry to hear the words of Jesus who spoke with an extraordinary authority to their religious leaders.

But St. Luke informs us that before anything else, Jesus begun speaking to his own disciples saying: «Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy» (Lk 12:1). Our Lord Jesus Christ wants to lead us to practice sincerity and transparency rather than hypocrisy as the Pharisees and the scribes do. For they show an external attitude which is not conform to their interior way of life: they pretend to be who they are not.

It is against this that our Lord Jesus Christ warns us in today’s Gospel when he says: «Nothing is covered that will not be uncovered, or hidden that will not be made known» (Lk 12:2). Yes, everything will be revealed. This is why we ought to try to accord our life with what we profess and proclaim. This is obviously not easy. But we don’t have to be afraid for our God is in control. As St. John Paul II said «God’s love doesn’t impose burdens upon us that we cannot carry… For whatever He asks of us, He provides the help that is needed.” Nothing happens that He is not aware of. Even our hairs have been numbered. Yes we have a price before God. Let’s not be afraid because His love for us is endless.

Lord, grant us the wisdom to well match our life to the exigencies of our faith, even amidst the tumults of this world. Amen.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 12,1-7):

Amen.

Gospel text

(Lk 11,47-54):

Jesus said to the Pharisees, «A curse is on you, for you build memorials to the prophets your ancestors killed. So you approve and agree with what your ancestors did. Is it not so? They got rid of the prophets, and now you can build!. The Wisdom of God also said, ‘I will send prophets and apostles and this people will kill and persecute some of them’. But the present generation will have to answer for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the foundation of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was murdered between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, the people of this time will have to answer for them all. A curse is on you, teachers of the Law, for you have taken the key of knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you prevented others from entering».

As Jesus left that place, the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees began to harass him, asking him endless questions, setting traps to catch him in something he might say.

The Application

Jesus is  hard on the chosen ones of the society, for they still continue the same tradition of their fathers who killed the prophets sent by God. I do not personally believe that God is punishing us for the faults of our fathers. However, if we do not convert, follow the same path, a path against love and charity, as our fathers did............, God cannot save us.

God has granted us wisdom, a wisdom that participates in the divine wisdom, which helps us to discern and make certain decisions, concerning the divine will. If we use it well in our daily discernments, always seeking the divine will, we will understand not only the divine will, but also our own vocation and the purpose of human life. There it will be a great discovery of the presence of God, who has called, consecrated and sent us, so that the world may be filled with his love and forgiveness.

What is still dangerous in our life is, using the same wisdom to discredit God and the good work that God enacts through others. If we fail to use the wisdom and use it against God, then it is a very dangerous precepts, which at end  will kill all the options that God gives for our conversion and salvation.

Action of the day: Use the wisdom that God has given you.

«A curse is on you, for you build memorials to the prophets your ancestors killed»

Fr. Pedro-José YNARAJA i Díaz

(El Montanyà, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we may mull over the meaning, acceptance and treatment given to the prophets: «I will send prophets and apostles and this people will kill and persecute some of them» (Lk 11:49). They were persons of any social or religious condition that received the divine message and were imbibed by it; driven by the Holy Spirit, they communicated it with signs and words intelligible in their own time. It was a message conveyed by means of discourses, not very laudable, generally, or by feats, almost always, difficult to accept. A characteristic of the prophecy is its discomfort. The gift is rather inconvenient for the recipient, as, deep inside, it hurts, while being quite embarrassing for the environment, that today, thanks to the Net or the satellites, can be divulged all over the world.

Prophet's contemporaries pretend to condemn him to silence, and they slander him, discredit him, and so on until he dies. It is when that moment finally arrives that it is time to build a memorial and pay homage to him, as he will not be a nuisance anymore for anyone. At present, we also have some prophets who enjoy universal reputation. Mother Therese, John XXIII, Monsignor Romero... Do we remember what they postulated and expected from us?, do we carry out what they showed us? Our generation will have to render accounts for the ozone layer we have managed to deplete, for wasting water resources, but also for forgetting that which our prophets have told us.

There still are persons pretending “the right to exclusive knowledge”, that —in the best of cases— are willing to share with their kinship only, who allow them to be well set up in their success and fame. Persons who do not let in those who try to enter the field of cognition, lest they get to know as much as themselves and move on ahead of them: «A curse is on you, teachers of the Law, for you have taken the key of knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you prevented others from entering» (Lk 11:52).

Now, as in Jesus' times, there are many who analyze phrases and study texts to discredit whoever may inconvenience them with their words: do we also do the same? «There is nothing more dangerous than to judge the things of God with human discourses» (St. John Crysostom).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 11,47-54):

Abbé Pedro-José YNARAJA i Díaz

Gospel text

(Lk 11,42-46):

Jesus said, «A curse is on you, Pharisees; for the Temple you give a tenth of all, including mint and rue and the other herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. This ought to be practiced, without neglecting the other. A curse is on you, Pharisees, for you love the best seats in the synagogues and to be greeted in the marketplace. A curse is on you for you are like tombstones of the dead which can hardly be seen; people don't notice them and make themselves unclean by stepping on them». Then a teacher of the Law spoke up and said, «Master, when you speak like this, you insult us, too». And Jesus answered, «A curse is on you also, teachers of the Law. For you prepare unbearable burdens and load them on the people, while you yourselves don't move a finger to help them».

Today, we can see how the Divine Master gives us a few lessons: amongst them, He speaks of the tithe and also of the coherence educators (parents, teachers and all Christian believers) must have. In today's Mass, the teachings of St. Luke's Gospel appear in a somewhat synthesized form, but Matthew's parallel passages (23:1…) are more comprehensive and concrete. Our Lord's entire line of thought infers that at the heart and soul of our activity there must be justice, charity, mercy and faith (cf. Lk 11:42).

The Old Testament tithing and our present collaboration with the Church, according to laws and norms, follow the same principle. Notwithstanding, to apply the principle of a mandatory law to small things —as the Masters of the Law used to do— is exaggerated and wearing: «Woe to you also, teachers of the Law! For you prepare unbearable burdens and load them on the people, while you yourselves don't move a finger to help them» (Lk 11:46).

It is true that sensible people can show true instances of unselfishness. We have recent personal experiences of people who, out of their harvest, have given to the Church —for worship and the poor— the 10% (tithe); of others, who reserve their first flower (their choicest fruits), or the best fruits of their orchard; or, of others, who come to offer the same amount they have spent on their holiday vacation; and, of others, who just bring the pick of their work for the same purpose. One can guess all of them have assimilated the influence of the Holy Spirit. Love is imaginative; from small things it manages to take out joy and merits before God.

The good shepherd goes before the flock. Good parents are models to follow: example attracts. Good educators make a point of living by the virtues they teach. This is being coherent. Not only to a point, but fully: living a life close to the tabernacle, the devotion to the Mother of God, some small services at home, spreading good Christian humor... «Great souls know how to take advantage of small things» (St Josemaria).
