Gospel text

(Mt 13,47-53):

Jesus said to his disciples, «Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a big fishing net let down into the sea, in which every kind of fish has been caught. When the net is full, it is dragged ashore. Then they sit down and gather the good fish in buckets, but throw the worthless ones away. That is how it will be at the end of time; the angels will go out to separate the wicked from the just and throw them into the blazing furnace, where they will weep and gnash their teeth». Jesus asked, «Have you understood all these things?». «Yes», they answered. So He said to them, «You will see that every teacher of the Law who becomes a disciple of the Kingdom is like a householder who can produce from his store things both new and old». When Jesus had finished these parables, He left the place.

«They gather the good fish in buckets, but throw the worthless ones away»

Today, the Gospel is a vital call to conversion. Jesus does not spare us the hard reality: «The angels will go out to separate the wicked from the just and throw them into the blazing furnace» (Mt 13:49-50). The warning is quite clear. We just cannot take it easy and go to asleep!

Now, it is our turn to freely choose: we either seek God and make goodness a part of our life, or we prefer to stand on the precipice of death. Or with Christ or against him. To convert ourselves means, in this case, to freely opt to become one of the upright ones and live a life worthy of his sons. However, within us we have the experience of sin: we realize the good we should do but we do the evil, instead; what do we do to provide our lives with a sense of true unity? We, alone, cannot do much. Only if we place ourselves in God's hands shall we be able to attain the goodness and be counted amongst the upright ones.

«Because we know not when our Judge shall appear, so we should live every day as if it were our last» (St. Jerome). These words are a call to live with intensity and responsibility our Christianity. It is not a matter of being afraid, but of living in the hope this is a time of grace, praise and glory.

Christ shows us the only way to our own glorification. Christ is the only way to heaven; therefore, our salvation, our happiness and whatever we can imagine happens through Him. And if we have everything in Christ, we can hardly refrain from loving the Church, that shows him to us and is its mystic body. Against purely human visions of this reality we have to recuperate the divine-spiritual vision: nothing bigger than Christ and the fulfillment of his will!

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 13,47-53):

Gospel text

(Lk 10,38-42):

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, He entered a village and a woman called Martha welcomed him to her house. She had a sister named Mary who sat down at the Lord's feet to listen to his words. Martha, meanwhile, was busy with all the serving and finally she said, «Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do all the serving?». But the Lord answered, «Martha, Martha, you worry and are troubled about many things, whereas only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken away from her».

The Application

As christians, we are called to be active and contemplative. Contemplative in searching the divine will and active in the accomplishment of this will. Thus to be a good christian we have to be both Mary to listen  the Lord and be ready to serve the Lord like Martha. Mary without service and Martha without listening the Lord, won’t be acceptable by the Lord.

Action of the day : Be a balanced person.

«You worry and are troubled about many things, whereas only one thing is needed»

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench
(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we, —no matter how busy we may be, at times, by so many things— must also listen to our Lord reminding us that «only one thing is needed» (Lk 10:42): esteem and saintliness. They should be our aim, the horizon we must never lose sight of amidst our daily chores.

Because we shall be “busy” if we follow our Creator’s plan: «’Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it’» (Gen 1:28). The earth! the world!: this is our meeting point with the Lord. «My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one» (Jn 17:15). Yes, the world is an “altar” for us and for our donation to God and to the others.

We belong in this world, but that does not mean we have to be worldly. On the contrary, we are called to become —in a beautiful expression of His Holiness John Paul II— “Priests of Creation!” “priests” of our world, of a world we passionately love.

Here is the question: world and saintliness; our daily chores and the one and only thing we truly need. They are not two opposed realities: and we have to try to make both coincide. And this coincidence must be carried out —in the first place and basically— in our own heart, where heaven and earth can be reunited. Because in the human heart is where the dialogue between Creator and creature takes place.

Therefore, prayer is necessary. «Ours is a time of continual movement which often leads to restlessness, with the risk of “doing for the sake of doing”. We must resist this temptation by trying “to be” before trying "to do". In this regard we should recall how Jesus reproved Martha: ‘You are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful’ (Lk 10:41-42)» (John Paul II).

There is no opposition between “to be” and “to do”, but there is indeed a priority order of precedence: «Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken away from her» (Lk 10,42).

Gospel text

(Mt 13,36-43):

Jesus sent the crowds away and went into the house. And his disciples came to him saying, «Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field». He answered them, «The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world; the good seed are the people of the Kingdom; the weeds are those who follow the evil one. The enemy who sows them is the devil; the harvest is the end of time and the workers are the angels.

»Just as the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so will it be at the end of time. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom all that is scandalous and all who do evil. And these will be thrown in the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the just will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. If you have ears, then hear».

The Application

It’s a good feeling to be at homme, particularly to be with Jesus. Being with Jesus helps us to understand what He is, what He wishes to communicate to us and importantly what He expectrs from us.  We still agitate negatively and painfully to see the bad elements dominating the world, just like prophet in the first reading. We wish that God acts immediatly as a God of justice than God of mercy. Jesus is affirming to us that TODAY His father wishes to be a God of mercy and love than a God of justice. Let’s us listen His reasoning.

Good and evil coexist and it must be recognized, because life and death are conditioned by our choices. We are children of the God of freedom and God wishes that we may be free in our decisions and assume the responsability. Life is full of choices and discernment will help us to make certain decisions. Man would like to have a healthy life, yet how can he recognize good health without recognizing illness? Though the evil is willed by God, if we trust Him, He will certainly deliver us.

Today the Lord asks us to be patient with others, who are not the same as we are. On the day of judgment, He will see them and judge. It is important that instead of looking at others, we should know how to give fruit, to give, 30, 60 or 100 for one.  Only God knows the truth and has the right to judge us. He has not delegated to us the power to judge or punish others. Since we have a God who is patient with us, full of mercy, we must also be merciful and have patience.

Action of the day : Have patience in your life.

«Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field»

Fr. Iñaki BALLBÉ i Turu
(Terrassa, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, through the parable of the weeds and the wheat, the Church urges us to ponder over the coexistence of good and evil. Good and evil within our heart; good and evil we may spot on others, good and evil we can see in the world, all around us.

«Explain to us the parable» (Mt 13:36), his disciples ask Jesus. And, today, we can mean to be more careful with our personal prayer, our everyday dealings with God. —Lord, we can ask him, explain to me why I do not progress enough in my interior life. Explain to me how can I be more faithful to you, how can I look for you in my work, or through these circumstances I do not understand or I do not want. How can I be a qualified apostle? A prayer is just this, to ask God for “explanations”. How is my prayer? Is it sincere?, is it constant?, is it trusting?

Jesus Christ invites us to keep our eyes fixed on Heaven, our eternal home. Quite often, haste can drive us crazy, but we seldom stop to think that there will come a day —we do not know whether far-off or near— when we shall have to settle our accounts with God and explain which are the fruits borne by the good seeds He has sown on us. And the Lord tells us that at the end of time we shall be chosen. So, we must win Heaven here on earth, in our everyday life, without waiting for situations that perhaps will never occur. We have to live boldly our ordinary life, what apparently has no transcendence. We must live by thinking of eternity and helping others to think of it, too! paradoxically, «the man who strives to live must die; whereas the man who does not strive to avoid sin has to live eternally» (St. Julian of Toledo).

We shall reap what we have sown. We have to fight to give today the 100%. So when we are called into God's presence we might be able to go with our hands full: of acts of faith, hope and love. Which result in minor things and events that, when lived on an everyday basis, make us better Christians, saints and human.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 13,36-43):

Abbé Iñaki BALLBÉ i Turu
(Terrassa, Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mt 13,31-35):

Jesus put another parable before them, «The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, that a man took and sowed in his field. It is smaller than all other seeds, but once it has fully grown, it is bigger than any garden plant; like a tree, the birds come and rest in its branches».

He told them another parable, «The kingdom of heaven is like the yeast that a woman took and buried in three measures of flour until the whole mass of dough began to rise». Jesus taught all this to the crowds by means of parables; He did not say anything to them without using a parable. So what the Prophet had said was fulfilled: ‘I will speak in parables. I will proclaim things kept secret since the beginning of the world’.

The Application

Pope Benedict XVI says that the Kingdom of God is not reduced to place, time and space, rather, it is Jesus Himself. Thus, little of Jesus in our life, is capable of transforming us totally into Christ. Though we are limited and weak, if we allow the Holy Spirit to act, Jesus who is living in us, is capable of changing everything. We need to trust the Lord and remain always watchful and open for divine inspirations and impulsions.

As I have said yesterday, I believe that God wishes to speak to us, according our needs and situations. He uses the parables so that we may understand the matter easily. He never refuses anything to a sincere searcher of God, because the divine revelation is gratuitous and universal in nature. Many at times, we don’t wish to know God and refuse to accept the divine inspirations, because they don’t come according to our expectations and terms.

Action of the day: Allow this little mustard seed to grow in you.

«He did not say anything to them without using a parable»

Fr. Josep Mª MANRESA Lamarca
(Valldoreix, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, the Gospel shows us Jesus preaching to his disciples. He does so, as is His custom, in the form of parables, using simple everyday images to explain the great hidden mysteries of His Kingdom. In this way he could be understood by everyone from the most highly educated to the simplest of individuals.

«The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed» (Mt 13:31) The mustard seed is so tiny it is almost invisible, but if we take good care of it and water it properly... it ends up becoming a large tree. «The kingdom of heaven is like the yeast that a woman took and buried in three measures of flour (...)» (Mt 13:33). The yeast is invisible, but if it weren't present the dough would not rise. Such is the way for life lived as a Christian, the life of grace: you don't see it externally; it doesn't make a sound, but… if one lets it introduce itself in one's heart, divine grace nourishes the seed and converts people from sinners to saints.

We get this divine grace through faith, through prayer, through the sacraments, through love. But this life of grace is, above all, a gift that we must wait and hope for, that we must desire with humility. A gift which the wise and learned of this world do not know how to appreciate, but that Our Lord God wants to transmit to the humble and uncomplicated.

It would be great if, when He looks for us, he finds us, not in the group of the proud, but amongst the humble, the ones who recognize themselves as weak sinners, but very grateful for, and trusting in, the goodness of the Lord. This way the mustard seed will grow into the large tree, the yeast of the Word of God will bring about for us the fruit of eternal life because «the more the heart is lowered in humility, the higher it is raised to perfection» (Saint Augustine).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 13,31-35):

For the past two weeks we have been meditating on the sower and the grains. Particularly last week we looked into the feeling of the sower. Today we are invited to discover how the Lord sows the seeds in our hearts. Zachariah and Mary had the Angel of the Lord. Moses saw the fire and heard the voice. If God chose to speak to Moses in  a storm, He chose to speak to Elijah, in the murmur of a breeze. God speaks to us according to our human condition, our ability to understand and particularly according to our present  status life.

Salamone is called to make a choice, with just discernment before God, imposing an irrevocable decision on himself, without giving him a moment to breathe. Young man, just taken the responsibility of a king, is asked to decide, here and now, something important for life. Happily, that day Salamone lived in the Lord according to the guidance of his Father, mediating on the wonders that the Lord has done during the reign of his father. Certainly, he will express his choice, which will please God. A thinking purely divine, at the service of the Lord, searching the means to accomplish the divine will.

God who is free will always leave us in our freedom. He will never impose himself. Saint Thomas Aquinas tells us that God cannot save us against our own will.  Man is called to listen to this God of freedom and patience because God has already listened to us and patiently marching with us. He knows our present, past and the future. How can a sensible person ignore a life-giving source?

If man listens to the Lord, in that listening he will discover that treasure hidden in a field and the pearl of great value that he searches in his life.  It is not for nothing that men of great power in the history have decided to leave everything to follow the Lord, in poverty and obedience.  It is in their emptiness that they allowed God to fill them.  Self-emptying before God is, self-fulfilling in God. It is in our emptiness that we make ourselves worthy to receive the divine grace.

Today we must ask ourselves two questions. The first one is this, are we listening to the Lord? Are we looking for the treasure and what kind of treasure that we are searching for?  The man who found the treasure, sold everything, so that he could buy it. Are we willing to lose everything to get the treasure that God has given us? Are we ready for self-emptying ?

As we listen to this story, let us not make the mistake of looking at life, as if, everything is a work of man. The treasure that the man found, was already existing. He only discovered it. It is not we who have found this treasure, it is the Lord who has put it before us, so that it may be visible to us. We already know that in the story of the disciples of Emmaus, it was not the disciples who wanted the Lord to stay with them, but it was the Lord who wanted them to stay with the Lord.  He was accompanying them  and made them to discover the resurrection while celebrating the Eucharist. St. Gregory the Great says in his homily on Mary Magdalene's encounter with the Lord, "the one she sought outwardly was the one who taught her inwardly to seek him.

My friends in Jesus Christ, believe me, this desire to search for the Lord, thirst for divinely things, don’t come without a divine intervention. As St. Paul tells us in the second reading, "Those whom he had intended beforehand, he also called; and those whom he called, he made righteous; and those whom he made righteous, he gave them his glory. "It is now up to us to answer Him. Surely we cannot afford everything with human means. We have to sell; it may cost us everything we have earned. Let's have the courage to search for the treasure and not be afraid to sell everything that we have, to possess the divine graces. And we'll be happy and joyful all our lives. Amen.

Gospel text

(Mt 20,20-28):

The mother of James and John came to Jesus with her sons, and she knelt down to ask a favor. Jesus said to her, «What do you want?». And she answered, «Here you have my two sons. Grant that they may sit, one at your right and one at your left, when you are in your kingdom». Jesus said to the brothers, «You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am about to drink?». They answered, «We can». Jesus replied, «You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right or at my left is not for me to grant. That will be for those for whom the Father has prepared it».

The other ten heard all this and were angry with the two brothers. Then Jesus called them to him and said, «You know that the rulers of the nations act as tyrants, and the powerful oppress them. It shall not be so among you; whoever wants to be more important in your group shall make himself your servant. And if you want to be first, make yourself the servant of all. Be like the Son of Man who has come, not to be served but to serve and to give his life to redeem many».

«Can you drink the cup that I am about to drink?»

Today’s fragment of the Gospel narrates an episode that places us in front of a situation which is not unusual in the various Christian communities. Indeed, John and James have been very generous leaving behind their households and their nets to follow Jesus the Christ. They have heard the Lord announce a Kingdom and offer eternal life but they still fail to understand the new dimension the Lord puts forward to them. It is because of this that their mother is going to ask for something which is good enough, but which doesn’t go beyond a simple human ambition: «Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom» (Mt 20,21).

Similarly, we listen to the Lord and follow Him, like the first disciples, but not always do we fully understand his message; we then sometimes follow our personal interests and ambitions within the Church. We forget that when we accept the Lord we have to give ourselves wholly and with full trust in Him; that we cannot think in obtaining the glory without having accepted the cross.

The answer Jesus gives them puts the stress precisely on this aspect: in order to have a share in his Kingdom what matters is to drink from his same «cup» (see Mt 20, 22), i.e. to be ready and willing to give our own life for the love of God and dedicate ourselves to the service of our brethren with the same merciful attitude that Jesus showed. In his first homily Pope Francis emphasized that in order to follow Jesus we have to carry our cross, because «when we make our way without the cross, when we confess a Christ without his cross, we are not disciples of the Lord».

As a consequence, following Christ demands from us great humility. From the minute of our Baptism we have been called to be his witnesses in order to transform the world. But this transformation will only be achieved if we are able to be servants of our brethren, with a spirit of great generosity and self-giving, but always joyful because we are following and making the Lord present.
