Gospel text

(Mt 8,1-4):

When Jesus came down from the mountain, large crowds followed him. Then a leper came forward. He knelt before him and said, «Sir, if you want to, you can make me clean». Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, «I want to, be clean again». At that very moment the man was cleansed from his leprosy. Then Jesus said to him, «See that you do not tell anyone, but go to the priest, have yourself declared clean, and offer the gift that Moses ordered as proof of it».

The Application

The movement of the Lord is always interesting, He comes down to us, from the mountain, from the presence of the Father. This descent will bring us much happiness and joy. If we want to enjoy this divine presence in our life and would like to profit from it, we must do like this leper and have his approach to Jesus.

First of all, he knew himself and knew that he was sick. In order to live our daily lives better, we must know ourselves, including our talents and limitations. To be healed, we should humbly acknowledge that we are sick.

Many at time we are alone and sometime we are isolated or rejected by the society, just like this man. Even though we are individuals, unique, we are called to live in solidarity with our brothers and sisters. Others can give us the information we need to live this life peacefully and calmly.

Secondly, he had faith, faith in Jesus Christ as the Saviour of the world, "You can cleanse me. "Trusting in God will make us cry out, cry out to the Lord. It is the Lord who takes the initiative and it’s not our cry which made the Lord to come towards us. As he comes towards us, we need to acknowledge His presence, and move towards Him. If we respond positively to His call, He will touch us, transform us, and give us a new birth.

Action of the day: Cry to God in hope.

«If you want to, you can make me clean»

Fr. Xavier ROMERO i Galdeano
(Cervera, Lleida, Spain)

Today, the Gospel shows us a leper, painfully conscious of his sickness, approaching Jesus and beseeching: «Sir, if you want to, you can make me clean» (Mt 8:2). When we see the Lord so close to us but our head, heart and hands so far away from his project, from their salvation, we should also feel the compulsion to formulate the same leper's expression: «Sir, if you want to, you can make me clean».

But an important question prevails: Can a sin-unconscious society beg forgiveness from our Lord? Can it beseech a purification of any kind? We all know too many people with aching and wounded hearts, their personal drama, however, being they do not always realize the extent of their situation. But, in spite of everything, Jesus is always close to us, to the very end of the age (cf. Mt 28:20), while waiting for the same petition: «Sir, if you want to...». But, our collaboration is, of course, needed. St. Augustine's sentence: «God who created you without you, will not save you without you» has become a classical one. So that we can truly change we must strive to ask our Lord for help.

Some might wonder: why is it so important to realize it, to convert and to wish to change? For the simple reason that, should we not feel like that, we should not be able to positively answer the previous question, where we said a sin-unconscious society will find it very difficult to ask the Lord for help.

This is why, when the moments of repentance and of Sacramental confession arrive, we have to get rid of the past, of all the ulcers infecting our body and our soul. We should not doubt it for a minute: Asking forgiveness is a great moment of Christian initiation, because it is when the bandage over our eyes comes off. But, what if someone does notice his situation but does not want to convert? There is an old proverb that goes: «Long absent, soon forgotten».

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 8,1-4):

«Si tu le veux, tu peux me purifier»

Abbé Xavier ROMERO i Galdeano
(Cervera, Lleida, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mt 7,21-29):

Jesus said to his disciples, «Not everyone who says to me: ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my heavenly Father. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not speak in your name? Did we not cast out devils and perform many miracles in your name?’. Then I will tell them openly: ‘I have never known you; away from me, you evil people!’.

»So, then, anyone who hears these words of mine and acts accordingly is like a wise man, who built his house on rock. The rain poured, the rivers flooded, and the wind blew and struck that house, but it did not collapse because it was built on rock. But anyone who hears these words of mine and does not act accordingly, is like a fool who built his house on sand. The rain poured, the rivers flooded, and the wind blew and struck that house; it collapsed, and what a terrible fall that was!».

When Jesus had finished this discourse, the crowds were struck by the way he taught, because he taught with authority unlike their teachers of the Law.

The Application

We have learned that there is a need to profess our faith and act upon it. What is important is not in doing, rather in being. This being is like a system of water fall, where the water falls without any difficulty and this will continue for an eternity. If we give more importance in doing (speaking and acting), then, it resembles like fixing a motor to elevate the water and makes it as if there is a water fall. Jesus is inviting us to be natural and true in our being than showing ourselves before people, as if we are good. By consequence, since our being is not in God, and our thinking and doing are not filled with love and charity, to have a good fruit we need many conditions.

This being in God is possible, only if we build our house on a rocky land, particularly in love and charity. If our life is filled with compassion, then we allow God to work in us and all that we do will become divine. There, even if people oppose to us, we will continue to do good, (as a water fall), because God gives us the water and we are there only to carry it or allow it to have a free flow. By consequence, since our being is in God, whatever may be the condition, in love and charity, we continue to execute the divine will and be able to withstand any difficult moment of life, even death.

Action of the day: Be a person of compassion and love.

«Not everyone who says to me: ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the kingdom of heaven»

Fr. Joan Pere PULIDO i Gutiérrez
(Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Spain)

Today, Jesus' categorical claim strikes us: «Not everyone who says to me: ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my heavenly Father» (Mt 7:21). If nothing else, these words demand, in our condition as Christians, our responsibility while letting us feel the urge to bear witness to our faith.

Building the house on rock is a clear image that invites us to value our commitment to our faith, which cannot be limited to just a few nice words, but must be based on the authority of our achievements, impregnated with charity. In June, the Church remembers young St. Pelayo's life who, rather than giving up his faith, preferred to be executed by the moors in a most tortuous manner. St. Bernard, while recalling St. Pelayo's life, tells us in his treatise on customs and duties of bishops: «No matter how beautiful it may be, chastity is of no value and merit without charity. Purity without love is like an oil-candle with no oil; but wisdom claims: how beautiful wisdom is with love! With that love the Apostle explains to us: emanating from a pure heart, a straight conscience and a sincere faith».

With the strength of charity, Jesus expresses his authority with the clear word that dumbfounds people: «The crowds were struck by the way he taught, because he taught with authority unlike their teachers of the Law» (Mt 7:28-29). Today's contemplation and our prayer, must be followed by a serious consideration: how do I speak and behave like a Christian in my life?; how do I define my testimony?; how do I undertake the commandment of love in my life, whether personal, family, professional, etc.? Words and prayers without any commitment do not count, but only our desire to live in accordance with God's Project. Our prayer should always be an expression of our craving for doing good deeds along with a request for help, because we recognize our own failings.

Let our prayer, O Lord, to be always joined by the strength of charity.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 7,21-29):

Abbé Joan Pere PULIDO i Gutiérrez

Gospel text

(Lk 1,57-66.80):

When the time came for Elizabeth, she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the merciful Lord had done a wonderful thing for her and they rejoiced with her. When on the eighth day they came to attend the circumcision of the child, they wanted to name him Zechariah after his father. But his mother said, «Not so; he shall be called John». They said to her, «No one in your family has that name»; and they asked the father by means of signs for the name he wanted to give. Zechariah asked for a writing tablet and wrote on it, «His name is John», and they were very surprised.

Immediately Zechariah could speak again and his first words were in praise of God. A holy fear came on all in the neighborhood, and throughout the Hills of Judea the people talked about these events. All who heard of it pondered in their minds and wondered, «What will this child be?». For they understood that the hand of the Lord was with him. As the child grew up, he was seen to be strong in the Spirit; he lived in the desert till the day when he appeared openly in Israel.

The Application

I would invite you all to meditate on these three points.

The Joy and the glory of God

The presence of John de Baptist has given immense joy to the family, to the community and to the whole world, the greatest among men, born of women, as witnessed by Christ. As we celebrate this solemnity, we have to ask ourselves, does our presence give joy to the world and by our presence do we make people to give glory to God?  The gospel doesn’t fail to remind us that in everything the glory of God should be the reason of our thinking and the force of our doing.

The surprise and the wonder of the Lord

We all have certain rules and regulations, guided by traditions and culture. God is not limited to these elements of life. To understand the divine functioning, we are called to look beyond these human elements, and search for the divine will.  This divine will is not a single act, but a permanent and continuous act, which pushes to renew this search eternally. God has a say in everything, and it’s not the same to all and to all time. The parents of John were open to this newness and allowed God to act in their own decisions. Thus, before the people they became the living witness of God’s presence and His marvelous deeds.

Strong in the Spirit and lived in the desert

There is a paradox of life and a strong bond between living in Spirit and a desert life. It is through events and people that God reveals His presence in the world. However, it in the silence and in the dept of our heart that God speaks to us. The Spirit forces to enter into a desert life, deep into our own interiority, a solid life with ‘God alone’ mentality. This Spirit gives us the thirst for water and forces us to depend on God’s providence. This desert life allows us to live  strangely, a moment of external and apparent emptiness, and helps us to understand the from the crude reality, the hidden truth and to discover the invisible richness of divine presence in our life. It is important to note that it was the Spirit which led Jesus into the desert. Let’s not be afraid of our own desert life, and should enter here, willingly and joyfully.

Action of the day: be joyful in every moment of life.

«As the child grew up, he was seen to be strong in the Spirit»

Fr. Joan MARTÍNEZ Porcel
(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we solemnly celebrate the Nativity of the Baptist. St. John is a man of contrasts: he lives in the silence of the desert, but right from there he appeals to the crowds with convincing voice inviting them to convert; he is humble enough to say he is only the voice, not the Word, but he does not mince his words and dares to accuse and denounce all injustices even to the very king; he urges his disciples to meet with Jesus, but he does not mind rebuking king Herod while he is in prison. Silent and humble, he is also strong and courageous enough to shed his blood. John the Baptist is a great man!, the greatest of them all, as Jesus himself will say in praise, but he is only Christ's precursor.

Perhaps, the secret of his greatness is the realization of knowing he has been chosen by God; this is how the evangelist explains it: «And the child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the desert until he appeared publicly to Israel» (Lk 1:80). All his childhood and youth was marked by the understanding of his mission: to provide testimony; which he does by baptizing Christ in the river Jordan, by favorably disposing the crowds for the Lord and, at the end of his life, by shedding his blood in favour of the truth. With our knowledge about John, we could answer the question his contemporary was wondering about: «What will this child be?» (Lk 1:66).

Through the baptism, we have been all chosen and sent to bear witness of the Lord. In an environment of indifference, St. John is a helping example to imitate; St. Augustine says: «Admire John as much as you can for, whom you admire is profitable to Christ. I insist, he is profitable to Christ, not because you offer anything to Him, but because of your being able to progress in Him». In John, his attitude as a Messenger, clearly explicit in attentive prayer to the Spirit, in his fortitude and humility, helps us to establish new horizons of sanctity for us and for our brother.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

Parallels between John and Jesus,

by Ephrem the Syrian (306-373 AD)

"The elderly Elizabeth gave birth to the last of the prophets, and Mary, a young girl, to the Lord of the angels. The daughter of Aaron gave birth to the voice in the desert (Isaiah 63:9), but the daughter of David to the strong God of the earth. The barren one gave birth to him who remits sins, but the Virgin gave birth to him who takes them away (John 1:29). Elizabeth gave birth to him who reconciled people through repentance, but Mary gave birth to him who purified the lands of uncleanness. The elder one lit a lamp in the house of Jacob, his father, for this lamp itself was John (John 5:35), while the younger one lit the Sun of Justice (Malachi 4:2) for all the nations. The angel announced to Zechariah, so that the slain one would proclaim the crucified one and that the hated one would proclaim the envied one. He who was to baptize with water would proclaim him who would baptize with fire and with the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11). The light, which was not obscure, would proclaim the Sun of Justice. The one filled with the Spirit would proclaim concerning him who gives the Spirit. The priest calling with the trumpet would proclaim concerning the one who is to come at the sound of the trumpet at the end. The voice would proclaim concerning the Word, and the one who saw the dove would proclaim concerning him upon whom the dove rested, like the lightning before the thunder." (excerpt from COMMENTARY ON TATIAN’S DIATESSARON 1.31)

Gospel text

(Mt 7,6.12-14):

Jesus said to his disciples, «Do not give what is holy to the dogs, or throw your pearls to the pigs: they might trample on them and even turn on you and tear you to pieces. So, do to others whatever you would that others do to you: there you have the Law and the Prophets. Enter through the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many go that way. How narrow is the gate that leads to life and how rough the road; few there are who find it».

«Do not give what is holy to the dogs»

Deacon Fr. Evaldo PINA FILHO
(Brasilia, Brazil)

Today, the Lord makes three recommendations. The first one, «Do not give what is holy to the dogs, or throw your pearls to the pigs» (Mt 7:6), makes a contrast in which “assets” are associated with “pearls” and to what “is holy”; and “dogs and pigs” to what is impure. Saint John Chrysostom teaches us that «our enemies are like us in nature but not in faith». Although the earthly benefits are equally distributed to the worthy and unworthy, it is not so when it comes to “spiritual graces”, which are a privilege of those who are faithful to God. The right distribution of spiritual assets is related to the zeal for sacred things.

The second is the so called “rule of gold” (cf. Mt 7:12), which encompasses everything the Law and the Prophets recommended, like branches of a single tree: the love of one’s neighbor presupposes the love of God, from which it comes.

Doing unto our neighbor what we would have done to us implies transparency of actions towards the other, the acknowledgement of their similitude to God, of their dignity. Why do we want the Good for ourselves? Because we recognize it as a means of identity and union with the Creator. Since the Good is, for us, the only means to achieve life in its fullest, its absence is unconceivable in our relationship with our neighbors. There is no place for the good where falseness prevails and evil preponders.

Lastly, the “narrow gate”… Pope Benedict asks us: «What does this "narrow door" mean? Why do many not succeed in entering through it? Is it a way reserved for only a chosen few? » No! The message of Christ is that «everyone may enter life, but the door is "narrow" for all. We are not privileged. The passage to eternal life is open to all, but it is "narrow" because it is demanding: it requires commitment, self-denial and the mortification of one's selfishness».

Let us pray to the Lord, who won universal salvation with His own life and resurrection, to gather us all in the eternal life Banquet.

Gospel text

(Mt 7,1-5):

Jesus said to his disciples, «Do not judge and you will not be judged. In the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and the measure you use for others will be used for you. Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye and not see the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother: ‘Come, let me take the speck from your eye’, as long as that plank is in your own? Hypocrite, take first the plank out of your own eye, then you will see clear enough to take the speck out of your brother's eye».

The Application

How to live a life without judging? Jesus seems to propose to us that a life without judging others is possible, particularly a critical judgement. To find an answer, I would personally invite you to look this gospel message little deeper than reducing it naively as ‘not to judge.’ I find here as an invitation to have a deeper self-knowledge and a sincere engagement to know the other person. This knowing will help us to understand where we stand and to look every human person with an eye filled with love and compassion. This love and compassion is possible, only if we remain connected to us and to our own weakness as  part of our life and accept them. It is from here that we learn to look us with mercy and compassion, and by consequence, we avoid all critical judgement. In case there is a need, to which we are forced to do, then our mutual correction will be filled with charity.

Action of the day: Be compassionate and charitable.

Today, the Gospel has reminded me of the Marshalling's words in Der Rosenkavalier, by Hugo von Hofmansthal: «The big difference lies upon the “how”». In many aspects of our life —particularly our spiritual life— the end result will change, depending upon “how” we do something.

Jesus said: «Do not judge and you will not be judged» (Mt 7:1). But Jesus had also said that we are to correct our sinful brother, and to do that we have got to previously make some kind of judgment. In his writings, St. Paul does judge the Corinthian community and St. Peter condemns Ananias and his wife Sapphira for falsehood. Because of that, St. John Crisostom explains: «Jesus is not saying we cannot prevent a sinner from sinning; we have to correct him, indeed, though not as the enemy seeking revenge but, rather, as a doctor applying the cure». It seems, therefore, our judgment should be mostly made with an aim to mend, not to take revenge.

But what St. Augustine says is even more interesting: «The Lord prevents us from judging quickly and unfairly (...). We should first ponder whether we have not made a similar sin; let us remember we are fragile, and let us always [judge] with the intention of serving God and not ourselves». If, when we see our brothers' sins we remember our own, it will not happen to us, as the Gospel says, that with a plank in our eyes we try to take the speck out of our brother's eye (cf. Mt 7:3).

If we are well prepared, we shall see the good and bad things in our fellow men, and almost unconsciously we shall form a judgment. But to look at others' faults from that point of view will help us as to the way “how” we judge: it will help us not to judge for the sake of judging, or just to say something or, perhaps, to cover our own deficiencies or, simply, because everybody does it. And, above all, let us always remember Jesus' words: «In the same way you judge others, you will be judged» (Mt 7:2).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 7,1-5):
