Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 12,38-42):

Today we enter the sixteenth ordinary Sunday. Last Sunday we meditated on grains and earth. We still remain on the same theme of grain and the earth that produces, and today we will hear the patience of the sower who sowed the good grains. We are oriented towards the Sower, and invited to meditate on his power and goodness.  This parable confirms to us that the product of the earth is not totally conditioned by the earth itself, for there are also other conditions, the external force, the blessing of grace that makes good things grow in us and the curse of manipulation, which makes violence and vengeance germinate in us. This parable affirms to us an active and dynamic presence of evil in the world that God loves.

Whatever may be the external conditions  or force of the good or bad seeds, it is the earth that has produced the fruit, for it has generously accepted even the bad seeds rather than rejecting them at the source.  The devil can do nothing if man does not cooperate with him. The sower clearly sees a problem, yet he does not rush into it. He takes his time, always mindful of those good seeds, which are faithful to Him, tender and weak today, who grow with the evil ones, in faith and certainly in wisdom. The good grains, always faithful, see the presence of those bad grains that prevent them from going towards the Lord, praying without ceasing, "You, Lord, God of tenderness and pity, slow to anger, full of love and truth! Look towards me, have mercy on me. "We must recognize that some situations are beyond us.

God created the world and He found it good and in the expression of that goodness the devil chose to sow evil. God who searches the hearts of men still watches over these good seeds. He has done good, all that He could do and He continues to do good. It is man in his ignorance has accepted the bad seeds into his heart. The history of creation repeats itself.   Life and death are before man. Instead of choosing life, He chose death. The parable tells us that it was an enemy, working in a hidden way and in the night, who sowed the bad seeds. He is not the shepherd who enters by the main gate, he is a thief who only came to steal. It's up to us to choose.

The Lord adds two more parables that make us understand how God works in us. He presents us with a mustard seed and leaven. The Lord's blessing will not present itself as a mountain with a storm. Blessing and grace come very often in silence and in the murmur of a soft breeze.  Yet it is capable of moving mountains, overturning kingdoms, and radically transforming the person.

The Gospel of the day ends with these words, "He who has ears, let him hear! "The conclusion is a call to conversion. Let us not be afraid of these bad seeds. Let us believe in the Good News of God's presence. Let’s believe with certitude that one single individual like Mother Theresa, or like Abbé Pierre, is capable of changing the world. God works in silence, in the hearts of men. Perhaps, it is you whom the Lord has chosen to transform the world. He who has ears, let him hear! ", Amen.

Gospel text

(Mt 12,14-21):

The Pharisees went out and made plans to get rid of Jesus. As Jesus was aware of the plot, He went away from that place. Many people followed him and He cured all who were sick. Then He gave them strict orders not to make him known. In this way Isaiah's prophecy was fulfilled: «Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, and with whom I am pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him and He will announce my judgment to the nations. He will not argue or shout, nor will his voice be heard in the streets. The bruised reed He will not crush, nor snuff out the smoldering wick. He will persist until justice is made victorious and in him all the nations will put their hope».

«He cured all who were sick»

Fr. Josep Mª MASSANA i Mola OFM
(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, the Gospel brings up a double message. On the one hand, Jesus calls us with a beautiful invitation to follow him: «Many people followed him and He cured all who were sick» (Mt 12:15). If we follow him we shall find the remedy for all the troubles of our journey, as we were reminded not long ago: «Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest» (Mt 11:28). On the other hand, we are showed the value of gentle love: «He will not argue or shout» (Mt 12:19).

He knows we are burdened and weary because of the heaviness of our temperamental and physical weaknesses... and for this unexpected cross that has visited us with all its coarseness, with all our disagreements, disappointments, grief and sorrow. In fact, «the Pharisees went out and made plans to get rid of Jesus» (Mt 12:14) and... if we know the disciple is not above his teacher (cf. Mt 10:24), we should be conscious that we shall also have to suffer from incomprehension and persecution.

All in all, it is a heavy burden upon us, a bundle that strains us. And we feel as if Jesus would be saying: «Cast off your bundle at me feet, and I will take care of it; give me that heavy burden that crashes you, and I will carry it; unload your worries and turn them over to me...».

It is kind of funny: Jesus invites us to cast off our burden, while He is offering us another one: his yoke, with the promise, however, that it is a soft and light one. He wants to show us that we cannot go around the world without any burden upon us. We are to carry some kind of load, anyway. But, let it not be our bundle full of materialism; let it be, instead, his burden that does not encumber us.

In Africa, mothers and elder sisters carry their offspring on their back. A missionary, once, saw a girl carrying her little brother... And he asked her: «Are you sure he is not too heavy for you?». And she answered back without thinking twice: «He is not heavy, he is my little brother, and I love him». Love, Jesus’ yoke, is not only light, but it also sets us free from all that overwhelms us.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 12,14-21):

Abbé Josep Mª MASSANA i Mola OFM
(Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mt 12,1-8):

It happened that Jesus walked through the wheat fields on a Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, and began to pick some heads of wheat and crush them to eat the grain. When the Pharisees noticed this, they said to Jesus, «Look at your disciples; they are doing what is prohibited on the Sabbath!». Jesus answered, «Have you not read what David did when he and his men were hungry? He went into the house of God, and they ate the bread offered to God, although neither he nor his men had the right to eat it, but only the priests. And have you not read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the Temple break the Sabbath rest, yet they are not guilty? I tell you, there is greater than the Temple here. If you really knew the meaning of the words: ‘It is mercy I want, not sacrifice’, you would not have condemned the innocent. Besides the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath».

The Application

Life is not always gentil with us. All the situations are not very comfortable to live. However, in life, we should learn to discern and make the right choices. It’s here that we prove that we are children of God. When the decision is taken, it’s important that we verify, whether it is in accordance with the divine will. Am I acting in love or in obligation ? In my discernment, does God has the centre place ?

Since we are God’s children, we can’t be slave to anything, including social rules and regulations. Though we are free to choose and act, its however important that we give litte        attention towards our brothers and sisters who are weak. Let not our acts and behaviours distrube them and make them weaker.

Day of Sabbath is day to glorify God and reserved for contemplation and meditation. Jesus seems to propose to us, even here we can take another way and justify before God, if we think what we have done is just before God. It’s here Jesus demonstrates how merciful is the Father, even to be relegated by our acts. If our act is filled with love and divine charity, then God will accept anything that we propose to Him, even postponding the time and the space, including life and death.

Action of the day : Let’s not be afraid to be what we are and  be always just before God.

«It is mercy I want, not sacrifice»

Fr. Josep RIBOT i Margarit
(Tarragona, Spain)

Today, the Lord is closing in the wheat fields of our lives, to pick the fruits of sanctity. Will He find charity, love of God and fellow man? Will Jesus, that corrects the rabbis' meticulous casuistry making the Sabbath rest law totally unbearable, have to remind us that He is only interested in our heart, in our capacity to love?

«Look at your disciples; they are doing what is prohibited on the Sabbath!» (Mt 12:2). And the unbelievable thing is they sincerely meant it. How can anyone forbid doing always a good deed? There is something reminding us no reason could exist excusing us from not helping others. True charity respects the demands for justice, by avoiding our falling into arbitrariness or whim, while preventing harshness to kill the true spirit of God's Law; for charity is nothing but a continuous invitation to loving, to give ourselves to others.

«It is mercy I want, not sacrifice» (Mt 12:7). Let us repeat it many times to engrave it on our heart: God, who is rich in mercy, wants us to be merciful. «How close God is of he who confess his mercy! Yes; God is not far from those contrite at heart» (St. Augustine). And how far away from God are we when we let our heart turn into hard stone!

Jesus Christ accused the Pharisees of condemning the innocent. That is a serious accusation. But what about us? Are we seriously interested in other people's problems? Do we consider them with affection and sympathy, as if we were judging a friend or a brother? Let us try not to lose our way, after all.

We beg you, O Mother of God, to make us merciful and to show us how to forgive. Let us be benevolent and kind. And if we discover in our life some details that do not fit at the heart of this disposition, now is a good time to rectify them, by formulating some effective purpose.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 12,1-8):

Abbé Josep RIBOT i Margarit
(Tarragona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mt 11,28-30):

Jesus spoke thus, «Come to me, all you who work hard and who carry heavy burdens and I will refresh you. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am gentle and humble of heart; and you will find rest. For my yoke is good and my burden is light».

The Application

For our sins that Jesus carried the Cross. Today, once again He invites us to take rest in Him. With Jesus, there is no sin and where there is no sin, there God’s kingdom is well established. Jesus wishes that we all be here, cherishing for an eternity the divine love and mercy.

Today invite you all to pray for the clarétains, because, we are celebrating the foundation of our congregation.

Action of the Day: Be humble like Jesus.

«Come to me, all you who carry heavy burdens (…), and you will find rest»

Fr. Julio César RAMOS González SDB
(Mendoza, Argentina)

Today, facing a world which decided to turn its back on God, in front of a world hostile to the Christianity and to Christians, to listen to Jesus (who is the One who is talking to us in the liturgy or in the private reading of the Word) brings consolation, joy and hope in the middle of the daily struggles: «Come to me, all you who carry heavy burdens (…), and you will find rest.» (Mt 11:28-29).

Consolation, as these words contain the promise of relieve which comes from God’s love. Joy, as they make the heart feel the security of faith in this promise. Hope, as walking in a world rebelled against God and ourselves, we who believe in God know that not everything comes to an end, although many “ends” have turned into “beginnings” of much better things, as His own Resurrection proves.

Our aim, a starting point to the love of God, is to be permanently with Christ, “yoke” of a law which is not based in the limited capacity of human motivations, but in the eternal saving willingness of God.

In this sense Benedict XVI tells us in one of his Catechesis:” God has a plan with and for us, and this one must be converted in what we want and are. The essence of heaven is based in fulfilling unconditionally the will of God or in other words where the word of God is achieved there is heaven. Jesus himself is heaven in the deepest and fullest sense of the word, in Him and through Him is entirely accomplished the will of God. Our will drives us away from God and makes us mere “earth”. But He accepts us, attracts us towards Him and in communion with Him we learn God’s will.”
Amen!

Frère Lluís SERRA i Llançana
(Roma, Italie)

Gospel text

(Mt 11,25-27):

On one occasion Jesus said, «Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I praise you, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned and revealed them to simple people. Yes, Father, this is what pleased you. Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him».

The Application

God has to be searched with an open heart than with our high intelligence. Since the revelation is purely divine, if we wish to know God, we should approach God divinely. This divine approach is possible, simply living our life in love and compassion, not of self-orientated, rather God as the center of everything.

Action of the day: Be God oriented person.

«You have hidden these things from the wise and learned and revealed them to simple people»

Fr. Raimondo M. SORGIA Mannai OP
(San Domenico di Fiesole, Florencia, Italy)

Today, the Gospel offers us the opportunity to accede, so to speak, to the very structure of the divine wisdom. Who, amongst us, would not love to become acquainted with the unfathomable mysteries of life? There are enigmas the world's best team of investigators would not even dream of detecting. There is One however before which «there is nothing hidden, (...); nor is anything secret» (Mk 4:22). This is the mystery of who calls himself the “Son of man ”, inasmuch He says about himself: «All things have been handed over to me by my Father» (Mt 11:27). His human nature —through the hypostatic union— has been assumed by the Person of the Word of God: He is, in short, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, before which darkness does not exist and for which, night is more luminous than broad daylight.

An Arab proverb says: «If a pitch black night a black ant climbs over a black wall, God sees it». There are neither secrets nor mysteries for God. There are mysteries for us, but not for God, before whom, past, present and future are open and dug into, to the last comma.

Quite pleased, the Lord says today: «Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I praise you, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned and revealed them to simple people» (Mt 11:25). Indeed, because no one could pretend to know these or similar hidden secrets, not even by bringing them out of the darkness through exhaustive studies, or as the wisdom should. A little old aged woman, without any school experience, will always be more aware about the deep secrets of life than the pretentious scientist that has spent an awful lot of money at reputed universities. Certain science can be achieved through inner faith, humility and poorness. Clement of Alexandria very well wrote: «Night is favourable for mysteries; it is then when our soul —attentive and humble— turns on itself while pondering over its condition; it is then when it finds God».

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 11,25-27):
