The feast of Pentecost is the soul of the Church. It was born today and I wish you all a very happy anniversary. Since the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Most Holy Trinity, is the soul of our soul, the life of our life, the being of our being, and since He is our sanctifier, the guest of our deepest interior, it is important that we build a new relationship with Him and that our relationship with Him be each time more conscious and more personal.

St. Cyril of Alexandria tells us, if we wish to participate in the divine nature, as willed by Christ, it was necessary for our human nature to be transformed into another, and to be transfigured in order to await the newness of a life loved by God. And this could not be done otherwise than by union with and participation in the Holy Spirit. This is why Jesus ascended to heaven and the purpose of Pentecost.

Man wanted to master God and he still does. In history he built the tower of Babel, without God, alone with his power and intelligence. This behavior without God, like Peter who went without Jesus to the sea to fish, will separate us, divide us and make our hands empty. When man learns to abandon himself to God, in his humility and gratitude, God comes down towards him, to the earth, and this divine act, unites us, transforms us as one people, a people worthy of God. Thanks to the Holy Spirit, we form the members of the body of Christ, Saint Paul tells us.

For this reason, I invite you to look at this event, the Pentecostal experience of the disciples, as you are already there, on the spot, and imitate it in our daily lives.

They were together. Never be alone. I told you, when I celebrated Mass alone, you were all with me. A Christian, cannot practice his faith alone voluntarily. Jesus himself called the disciples and sent them together. Stay together, discuss, consult and share life and life's goods, especially couples. Always stay connected. We have many means of communication. Use them without abusing.

In prayer. Very often we see the disciples in prayer, as their Master. That's the Christian identity: Communion and prayer. The family that prays together, stays together, says Mother Theresa. Teach the children to pray, to dialogue with God, to listen to his Word with patience and docility. It is prayer, born of faith, that brings about miracles. Woman, my hour has not yet come, yet He will turn water into wine.

If we remain together, united in prayer, suddenly everything will change, a radical transformation, an unexpected gift is given and received. Life will be filled with good surprises, continually being renewed by the Holy Spirit. ‘On the day of Pentecost, the fulfilment of the promise made by Christ to the Apostles is carried out. On the same evening of Easter Day He poured out His breath upon them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit" (Jn 20:22). The coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost renews and brings to its fullness this gift in a solemn way and with external manifestations. Thus culminates the Paschal Mystery’. (Mgr. Josep Àngel SAIZ)

Like the apostles, let us leave our safe places and proclaim the Good News of the gospel, the joy of the gospel. Let us pray together, ‘send your Spirit, who renews the face of the earth’. Let us be the new wineskins, who have received the new wine, the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 21,20-25):

Abbé Fidel CATALÁN i Catalán
(Terrassa, Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Jn 21,20-25):

Peter looked back and saw that the disciple Jesus loved was following as well, the one who had reclined close to Jesus at the supper and had asked him, « Lord, who is to betray you?». On seeing him, Peter asked Jesus, «Lord, what about him?». Jesus answered, «If I want him to remain until I come, does that concern you? Follow me». Because of this the rumor spread in the community that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus had not said to Peter, «He will not die», but «suppose I want him to remain until I come».

It is this disciple who testifies about the things he has recorded here and we know that his testimony is true. But Jesus did many other things; if all were written down, the world itself would not hold the books recording them.

«He has recorded here and we know that his testimony is true»

Fr. Fidel CATALÁN i Catalán
(Terrassa, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we read the end of St. John's Gospel. Actually, it is the end of the appendix St. John's community added to the original text. In this particular case, it is a willingly significant fragment. The Resurrected Lord appears before his disciples and confirms they are to follow him, particularly as regards Peter. Next, comes the text we proclaim today in the liturgy.

The figure of the beloved disciple is central in this fragment and even in the totality of St. John's Gospel. It may refer to a concrete person —the disciple John— or, it can be a figure, behind which, any disciple loved by the Master can be placed. Whatever its meaning, the text helps to give an element of continuity to the Apostles' experience. The Resurrected Lord assures us of his presence amongst those who want to follow him.

«Suppose I want him to remain until I come» (Jn 21:22), may perhaps refer to this continuity rather than to a chronological space-time element. The beloved disciple becomes a testimony of all that, to the extent he realizes the Lord will always remain beside him. This is why he can write and his words are worth believing, because he glosses with his pen the continuous experiences of those living their mission in the midst of the world, while experiencing the presence of Jesus Christ. This beloved disciple can be each one of us provided we let be guided by the Holy Spirit, He who helps discovering this presence.

This text, already prepares us to celebrate, tomorrow, the Solemnity of Pentecost, the Gift of the Spirit: «And the Paraclete came down from Heaven: the Church's custodian and sanctifier, the souls' administrator, the castaways' pilot, the wanderers' lighthouse, the fighting ones' arbitrator and he who crowns the winners» (St. Cyril of Jerusalem).

Gospel text

(Jn 21,15-19):

After Jesus and his disciples had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, «Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?». He answered, «Yes, Lord, you know that I love you». And Jesus said, «Feed my lambs». A second time Jesus said to him, «Simon, son of John, do you love me?». And Peter answered, «Yes, Lord, you know that I love you». Jesus said to him, «Look after my sheep».

And a third time He said to him, «Simon, son of John, do you love me?». Peter was saddened because Jesus asked him a third time, «Do you love me?», and he said, «Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you». Jesus then said, «Feed my sheep. Truly, I say to you, when you were young you put on your belt and walked where you liked. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and another will put a belt around you and lead you where you do not wish to go». Jesus said this to make known the kind of death by which Peter was to glorify God. And He added, «Follow me».

The Application

In the gospel of Jean, every post apparition of the Lord ends with a mission. This mission begins with love and ends with love. It is in this love that Jesus gave His life for us and wishes that Peter continues the mission with the same impulsion of the love for the Lord. It is important that we understand the foundation of our mission and if our life is not filled with love, then we can’t be missionaries of the Lord.

In this love of Peter there were imperfections. Jesus comes again to confirm to us that He doesn’t seek perfection, as many of us do think, rather expects our faithfulness. It is in these imperfections that we allow God to work in and through us. It is in the same imperfection of Peter, in his thrice denial, that Jesus has decided to build His Church.

Action of the day: Accept your imperfections.

«‘Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you’. Jesus then said, ‘Feed my sheep’»

+ Fr. Joaquim MONRÓS i Guitart
(Tarragona, Spain)

Today, we should be grateful to St. John for having left with us the evidence of an intimate dialogue between Jesus and Peter: «Simon, son of John, do you love me?», and he said, «Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you». Jesus then said, «Feed my lambs’» (Jn 21:15). —From the smallest ones, newly born to the Grace of God... you must take care, as if you were Myself... When a second time... «Jesus said to him, ‘Look after my sheep’», He is actually telling Simon Peter: —You must guide all those who follow me in my Love, and you must see to it they all have the charity ordained. Thus, through you, everyone will realize they are following Me; for it is my Will you go always first, while administering the merits that —for each one— I have gained.

«Peter was saddened because Jesus asked him a third time, ‘Do you love me?’», and he said, «Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you’» (Jn 21:17). His triple denial makes him rectify, and just remembering it, saddens him. —I truly love you despite I denied you..., you know how much I have regretted my betrayal, you know how much I found consolation by being with your Mother and brothers.

I find consolation in remembering that the Lord established the power to forgive sins that separate us, whether a little or a lot, from his Love and the love to our brothers. —I find consolation when admitting the truth of my distancing from You while feeling from your priestly lips the «I absolve you» “by way of judgment”.

We find consolation in the power of those keys Jesus Christ confers to his priests-ministers, to open again the doors to his friendship. —Lord, I see that indifference can be arranged by a more intense act of love. It makes us altogether evaluate the immense joy of the Sacrament of forgiveness to confess our sins, which are really a “lack of love”.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 21,15-19):

+ Abbé Joaquim MONRÓS i Guitart
(Tarragona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Jn 17,20-26):

Jesus said, «I pray not only for these but also for those who through their word will believe in me. May they all be one as you Father are in me and I am in you. May they be one in us; so the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the Glory you have given me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. Thus they shall reach perfection in unity and the world shall know that you have sent me and that I have loved them just as you loved me.

»Father, since you have given them to me, I want them to be with me where I am and see the Glory you gave me, for you loved me before the foundation of the world. Righteous Father, the world has not known you but I have known you, and these have known that you have sent me. As I revealed your Name to them, so will I continue to reveal it, so that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I also may be in them».

«I pray not only for these but also for those who through their word will believe in me»

Fr. Joaquim PETIT Llimona, L.C.
(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we find a solid basis for trust in the Gospel: «Holy Father, I pray not only for these but also for those who through their word will believe in me...» (Jn 17:20). It is Jesus' heart, which, in the intimacy of Jesus with his disciples, opens up the inexhaustible treasures of His Love. He wants to strengthen their hearts overwhelmed by the sense of farewell that, during the Last Supper, the Master's words and gestures have left them with. It is Jesus' unfailing prayer that goes up to the Father, pleading for them. What a confidence and strength will they find in this prayer throughout their apostolic mission! Amidst all the difficulties and dangers they have to face, this prayer will go all the way with them to become the source where they will find the strength and courage to give the final testimony of their faith with the offering of their own life.

We should let the reality of Jesus' prayer for his disciples to reach our lives, too: «I pray not only for these but also for those who will believe in me...». These words travel through time and centuries to attain, with the same intensity they were once said, the hearts of every true believer.

In the living memory of His Holiness St. John Paul II's last visit to Spain, we find in his words the echo of Jesus' prayer for his disciples: «With my open arms, in my heart I carry you all —said the Pontiff before more than a million persons—. The memory of these days will become a prayer, we shall beg the peace for you in fraternal coexistence, encouraged by the Christian hope that never loses heart». An another Pontiff, not so close in time, also made an exhortation that, after many centuries, have reached our heart, too: «There is no ailing one whom the victory of the cross be denied to, nor there is anyone whom Christ's prayer does not help to. For, if it was so profitable for those who treated him so cruelly, how much more will it not be for those who are converted unto him» (St. Leo the Great).

Gospel text

(Jn 17,11b-19):

Jesus looked up to heaven and prayed, «I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world whereas I am going to you. Holy Father, keep them in your Name that you have given me, so that they may be one, just as we are. When I was with them, I kept them safe in your Name, and not one was lost except the one who was already lost, and in this the Scripture was fulfilled.

»But now I am coming to you and I leave these my words in the world that my joy may be complete in them. I have given them your word and the world has hated them because they are not of the world; just as I am not of the world. I do not ask you to remove them from the world but to keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world; consecrate them in the truth —your word is truth. I have sent them into the world as you sent me into the world, and for their sake, I go to the sacrifice by which I am consecrated, so that they too may be consecrated in truth».

The Application

The Trinitarian unity is wished for us and with the grace of God, it is a possibility, assures us Jesus, in His prayer to the Father. For this unity, we need not be separated from the world, but be aware that we belong to God, even though we are living here in this earth. If our life is filled with love and charity, and finds its reason in the divine love for the meaning, and the resource to live, then, we are already in union with Jesus.

To have this union, we should think and act, as if we are divine beings, sent by God to this world, (just like Jesus) and be a faithful messenger of God’s love. God doesn’t wish that we run away from this world, rather to take up our daily crosses, and march towards, the house of the Lord, as a pilgrim. It is not in isolation and individual perfection, rather as a people of God, one single community that we are called to live. Isn’t the Trinitarian communion, the source of our Faith ? Isn’t in this communion that our life finds its source and end?

Action of the day : Learn to work with others.

«That my joy may be complete in them»

Fr. Thomas LANE
(Emmitsburg, Maryland, United States)

Today, we live in a world which does not know how to be truly happy with the happiness of Jesus, a world which seeks the happiness of Jesus in all the wrong places and in the wrong ways. Seeking happiness without Jesus only leads to deeper unhappiness. Just look at the soaps on TV, there is always somebody in trouble. The soaps on TV show us the misery of a godless life.

But we want to live this day with the joy of Jesus. Jesus prayed to his Father in our Gospel today, «I leave these my words in the world that my joy may be complete in them» (Jn 17,13). Notice that Jesus wants his joy to be complete in us. He wants us to be full of his joy. This does not mean that we will not have crosses, for «the world has hated them because they are not of the world» (Jn 17,14), but Jesus expects us to live with his joy no matter what the world thinks of us. The joy of Jesus is to permeate us to our very core while the superficial rumblings of a godless world should not penetrate us.

Today then let us live with the joy of Jesus. How can we acquire more and more of this joy of Jesus? Obviously from Jesus himself. Jesus is the only one who gives us the true joy that the world is lacking as we see in the soaps on TV. Jesus said, «If you remain in me and my words in you, you may ask whatever you want and it will be given to you» (Jn 15,7). Then let us spend time each day in prayer with the words of Jesus in the Scriptures, let us eat and consume the words of Jesus in the Scriptures, let them be our food, so that we may be satiated with the joy of Jesus: «Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person, which gives life a new horizon» (Benedict XVI).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 17,11b-19)

Gospel text

(Jn 17,1-11a):

Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, «Father, the hour has come; give glory to your Son, that the Son may give glory to you. You have given him power over all mortals, and you want him to bring eternal life to all you have entrusted to him. For this is eternal life: to know you, the only true God, and the One you sent, Jesus Christ. I have glorified you on earth and finished the work that you gave me to do.

»Now, Father, give me in your presence the same Glory I had with you before the world began. I have made your name known to those you gave me from the world. They were yours and you gave them to me, and they kept your word. And now they know that all you have given me comes indeed from you. I have given them the teaching I received from you, and they received it and know in truth that I came from you; and they believe that you have sent me.

»I pray for them; I do not pray for the world but for those who belong to you and whom you have given to me —indeed all I have is yours and all you have is mine— and now they are my glory. I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world whereas I am going to you. Holy Father, keep them in your Name (that you have given me,) so that they may be one, just as we are».

The Application

I would like to invite you all to meditate on few themes for the day and apply them for the application.

Knowing God. This knowing God is the eternal life. We all know God and thus we are part of this eternal life, which has already started to give fruit by our positive engagement for the development of the humanity, the creation, as God created it for us. God as Creator and we as creation, have a common mission, which is given to us through Jesus Christ. Knowing God, is also synonym with knowing the divine will.

The glory of God. Jesus glorified God, by accomplishing this divine will. God glorified Jesus, by being with Him, throughout His mission on this earth. This God continues to be with us and accompany us. Thus, through the creation, and all that the creation helps us to sustain on this earth, is the way God glorifies us. It’s important that we also search for means and ways to glorify this God, because He has already glorified us.

The prayer of Jesus. It is important that I understand the way Jesus prayed with the Father? It’s simply a relation, dialogue, listening and silence. Its assuming the responsibility of taking care of the people confined to our responsibility. What have you done to your brother and sister? It’s the way we are called to pray, and it is what God speaks to us, and it is here we can accomplish the divine will. Imitation of Jesus, is also the imitation of the way Jesus glorified His Father. Thus, prayer is an act, willful engagement. Life is a prayer.

Action of the day: Be silent and listen to the voice of God.

«Father, the hour has come»

Fr. Pere OLIVA i March
(Sant Feliu de Torelló, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, St. John's Gospel —that we have been reading for days now— begins by speaking of “the hour”: «Father, the hour has come» (Jn 17:1). The crowning moment, the clarification of everything, the utmost donation of Christ who delivers himself to all... But “the hour” still is a hidden reality to men; it will be revealed as the scheme of Jesus' life will open the perspective of the Cross.

Has the hour come? What hour? Well, the hour when men will recognize God's name, that is, his actions, his way to address Mankind, his way to speak to us; in the Son, in the Christ He loves.

Now a day, men and women know God through Jesus («I have given them the teaching I received from you»: Jn 17:8), we become witnesses of life, of the divine life developing inside us thanks to the Baptism. In him, we live, we move, we are; in him, we find words that feed us and make us grow; in him, we discover what God wants out of us: our plenitude, our human realization, an existence that does not live out of personal vainglory but out of an existential attitude that becomes strong through the same God and his Glory. As St. Irineus remind us, «The Glory of God is living man». Let us exalt and praise God and his glory so that we, human beings, can reach our plenitude!

The Gospel of Jesus Christ marks us; we work for the glory of God, a task that translates in a better service for today's men and women's lives. This means working for true human communication, true happiness of the person, to increase the joy of the sad ones, to exert compassion on the needing... In short: open to Life (with capital letters).

For the Spirit, God works inside every human being and lives in the deepest part of the person constantly incentivating everybody to live as per the Gospel values. The Good News is the expression of the liberating happiness He wants to give us.
