(Jn 21,15-19): 

Quand ils eurent déjeuné, Jésus dit à Simon-Pierre: «Simon, fils de Jean, m'aimes-tu plus que ceux-ci?». Il lui répond: «Oui, Seigneur, je t'aime, tu le sais». Jésus lui dit: «Sois le berger de mes agneaux». Il lui dit une deuxième fois: «Simon, fils de Jean, m'aimes-tu?». Il lui répond: «Oui, Seigneur, je t'aime, tu le sais». Jésus lui dit: «Sois le pasteur de mes brebis».

Il lui dit, pour la troisième fois: «Simon, fils de Jean, est-ce que tu m'aimes?». Pierre fut peiné parce que, pour la troisième fois, il lui demandait: «Est-ce que tu m'aimes?» et il répondit: «Seigneur, tu sais tout: tu sais bien que je t'aime». Jésus lui dit: «Sois le berger de mes brebis. Amen, amen, je te le dis: quand tu étais jeune, tu mettais ta ceinture toi-même pour aller là où tu voulais; quand tu seras vieux, tu étendras les mains, et c'est un autre qui te mettra ta ceinture, pour t'emmener là où tu ne voudrais pas aller». Jésus disait cela pour signifier par quel genre de mort Pierre rendrait gloire à Dieu. Puis il lui dit encore: «Suis-moi».

L’Application

Jésus a confié ses brebis à Pierre, sur le roc de l’amour.  Cette tache missionnaire n’est pas donnée dans le sens hiérarchique, mais dans le sens pastoral, reçue et transmise. ‘Tu sais tout’ nous confirme l’humilité de Pierre et sa disponibilité.  ‘Suis-moi’ nous confirme la confiance du Seigneur. Ayons-nous cette humilité pour dire, ‘tout sais tout’ ?

Aujourd'hui, nous devons remercier saint Jean de nous avoir légué le récit de cette conversation intime entre Jésus et Pierre: «‘Simon, fils de Jean, m'aimes-tu plus que ceux-ci?’. Il lui répond: ‘Oui, Seigneur, je t'aime, tu le sais’. Jésus lui dit: ‘Sois le berger de mes agneaux’» (Jn 21,15). —Sur les plus petits, nouveau-nés à la vie de Grâce... tu dois veiller comme si tu étais Moi... La deuxième fois, quand «Jésus lui dit: sois le pasteur de mes brebis», Il suggère à Simon Pierre: —Tu vas présider en mon Amour à tous ceux qui me suivront et t'assurer qu'ils agissent bien selon une charité ordonnée. Ainsi, tous sauront qu'à travers toi, c'est Moi qu'ils suivent; car telle est ma volonté: que tu marches toujours au-devant, en dispensant les mérites que J'ai gagnés pour chacun d'eux.

«Pierre fut peiné parce que, pour la troisième fois, il lui demandait: ‘Est-ce que tu m'aimes?’ et il répondit: ‘Seigneur, tu sais tout: tu sais bien que je t'aime’» (Jn 21,17). Jésus lui fait rectifier son triple reniement et, à son seul souvenir, Pierre est tout peiné. —Je t'aime totalement, même si je t'ai renié..., tu sais déjà comment j'ai pleuré ma trahison, tu sais que je n'ai trouvé de consolation qu’auprès de ta Mère et nos frères.

Nous sommes consolés quand nous nous rappelons que le Seigneur a établi le pouvoir d'effacer le péché qui, peu ou prou, nous sépare de son Amour et de l'amour pour nos frères. —Je trouve ma consolation lorsque je reconnais que je suis éloigné de Toi et que j'écoute de tes lèvres sacerdotales le «Je t'absous» “en forme de jugement”.

Nous trouvons notre consolation dans ce pouvoir des clés que Jésus-Christ accorde à tous ses prêtres —administrateurs de l'ouverture des portes de Son amitié. —Seigneur, je vois qu'un manque d'amour se guérit grâce à un acte d'amour immense. Tout cela, nous conduit à mieux apprécier l'immense trésor du sacrement du pardon pour confesser nos péchés qui, réellement, sont une “dés-affection”.

(Jn 17,20-26): 

«Je ne prie pas seulement pour ceux qui sont là, mais encore pour ceux qui accueilleront leur parole et croiront en moi. Que tous, ils soient un, comme toi, Père, tu es en moi, et moi en toi. Qu'ils soient un en nous, eux aussi, pour que le monde croie que tu m'as envoyé. Et moi, je leur ai donné la gloire que tu m'as donnée, pour qu'ils soient un comme nous sommes un: moi en eux, et toi en moi. Que leur unité soit parfaite ; ainsi, le monde saura que tu m'as envoyé, et que tu les as aimés comme tu m'as aimé.

»Père, ceux que tu m'as donnés, je veux que là où je suis, eux aussi soient avec moi, et qu'ils contemplent ma gloire, celle que tu m'as donnée parce que tu m'as aimé avant même la création du monde. Père juste, le monde ne t'a pas connu, mais moi je t'ai connu, et ils ont reconnu, eux aussi, que tu m'as envoyé. Je leur ai fait connaître ton nom, et je le ferai connaître encore, pour qu'ils aient en eux l'amour dont tu m'as aimé, et que moi aussi, je sois en eux».

Aujourd'hui nous trouvons dans l'Évangile une solide source d'où puiser la confiance: «Je ne prie pas seulement pour ceux qui sont là, mais encore pour ceux qui (…) croiront en moi» (Jn 17,20). C'est le Cœur de Jésus qui, dans l'intimité des siens, leurs ouvre les trésors inépuisables de son Amour. Il veut consolider leurs cœurs attristés par l'air d'«au revoir» qu'ont les gestes et paroles du Maître durant la Dernière Cène. C'est la prière indéfectible de Jésus qui monte vers le Père en intercédant pour eux. Quelle sécurité et quelle force trouveront-ils par la suite dans cette prière tout au long de leur mission apostolique! Au milieu des difficultés et des dangers qu'ils ont dû affronter, cette prière les accompagnera et sera la source de laquelle ils trouveront la force et le courage pour être témoins de leur foi à travers du renoncement à leur propre vie.

La contemplation de cette réalité, de cette prière de Jésus pour les siens, doit toucher nos vies: «Je ne prie pas seulement pour ceux qui sont là, mais encore pour ceux qui (…) croiront en moi…». Ces paroles transcendent les siècles et arrivent, avec la même intensité avec laquelle ils étaient prononcés, jusqu'au cœur de tous et chacun des croyants.

Si nous nous souvenons de la dernière visite de Saint Jean-Paul II en Espagne, nous retrouvons dans les paroles du Pape l'écho de cette prière de Jésus pour les siens: «À bras ouverts je vous porte tous dans mon cœur —dit le Pontife devant plus d'un million de personnes. Le souvenir de ce séjour se fera prière demandant pour vous la paix en coexistence fraternelle, encouragés par l'espérance chrétienne qui ne trahit jamais». Et un peu plus loin dans le temps, un autre pape prononçait des paroles qui nous touchent le cœur après plusieurs siècles: «Il n'existe aucun malade à qui l'on nie la victoire de la croix, il n'existe personne à qui ne l'aide pas la prière du Christ. Si ce fut vrai pour ceux qui ont appris de Lui, ne sera-t-il pas d'autant plus vrai pour ceux qui se convertissent à Lui?» (Saint Léon Le Grand).

Gospel text

(Jn 17,20-26): 

Jesus said, «I pray not only for these but also for those who through their word will believe in me. May they all be one as you Father are in me and I am in you. May they be one in us; so the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the Glory you have given me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. Thus they shall reach perfection in unity and the world shall know that you have sent me and that I have loved them just as you loved me.

»Father, since you have given them to me, I want them to be with me where I am and see the Glory you gave me, for you loved me before the foundation of the world. Righteous Father, the world has not known you but I have known you, and these have known that you have sent me. As I revealed your Name to them, so will I continue to reveal it, so that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I also may be in them».

Today, we find a solid basis for trust in the Gospel: «Holy Father, I pray not only for these but also for those who through their word will believe in me...» (Jn 17:20). It is Jesus' heart, which, in the intimacy of Jesus with his disciples, opens up the inexhaustible treasures of His Love. He wants to strengthen their hearts overwhelmed by the sense of farewell that, during the Last Supper, the Master's words and gestures have left them with. It is Jesus' unfailing prayer that goes up to the Father, pleading for them. What a confidence and strength will they find in this prayer throughout their apostolic mission! Amidst all the difficulties and dangers they have to face, this prayer will go all the way with them to become the source where they will find the strength and courage to give the final testimony of their faith with the offering of their own life.

We should let the reality of Jesus' prayer for his disciples to reach our lives, too: «I pray not only for these but also for those who will believe in me...». These words travel through time and centuries to attain, with the same intensity they were once said, the hearts of every true believer.

In the living memory of His Holiness St. John Paul II's last visit to Spain, we find in his words the echo of Jesus' prayer for his disciples: «With my open arms, in my heart I carry you all —said the Pontiff before more than a million persons—. The memory of these days will become a prayer, we shall beg the peace for you in fraternal coexistence, encouraged by the Christian hope that never loses heart». An another Pontiff, not so close in time, also made an exhortation that, after many centuries, have reached our heart, too: «There is no ailing one whom the victory of the cross be denied to, nor there is anyone whom Christ's prayer does not help to. For, if it was so profitable for those who treated him so cruelly, how much more will it not be for those who are converted unto him» (St. Leo the Great).

Gospel text

(Jn 17,11b-19): 

Jesus looked up to heaven and prayed, «I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world whereas I am going to you. Holy Father, keep them in your Name that you have given me, so that they may be one, just as we are. When I was with them, I kept them safe in your Name, and not one was lost except the one who was already lost, and in this the Scripture was fulfilled.

»But now I am coming to you and I leave these my words in the world that my joy may be complete in them. I have given them your word and the world has hated them because they are not of the world; just as I am not of the world. I do not ask you to remove them from the world but to keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world; consecrate them in the truth —your word is truth. I have sent them into the world as you sent me into the world, and for their sake, I go to the sacrifice by which I am consecrated, so that they too may be consecrated in truth».

The Application

The Trinitarian unity is wished for us and with the grace of God, it is a possibility, assures us Jesus, in His prayer to the Father. For this unity, we need not be separated from the world, but be aware that we belong to God, even though we are living here in this earth. If our life is filled with love and charity, and finds its reason in the divine love for the meaning, and the resource to live, then, we are already in union with Jesus.

To have this union, we should think and act, as if we are divine beings, sent by God to this world, (just like Jesus) and be a faithful messenger of God’s love. God doesn’t wish that we run away from this world, rather to take up our daily crosses, and march towards, the house of the Lord, as a pilgrim. It is not in isolation and individual perfection, rather as a people of God, one single community that we are called to live. Isn’t the Trinitarian communion, the source of our Faith ? Isn’t in this communion that our life finds its source and end?

Action of the day : Learn to work with others.

«That my joy may be complete in them»

Today, we live in a world which does not know how to be truly happy with the happiness of Jesus, a world which seeks the happiness of Jesus in all the wrong places and in the wrong ways. Seeking happiness without Jesus only leads to deeper unhappiness. Just look at the soaps on TV, there is always somebody in trouble. The soaps on TV show us the misery of a godless life.

But we want to live this day with the joy of Jesus. Jesus prayed to his Father in our Gospel today, «I leave these my words in the world that my joy may be complete in them» (Jn 17,13). Notice that Jesus wants his joy to be complete in us. He wants us to be full of his joy. This does not mean that we will not have crosses, for «the world has hated them because they are not of the world» (Jn 17,14), but Jesus expects us to live with his joy no matter what the world thinks of us. The joy of Jesus is to permeate us to our very core while the superficial rumblings of a godless world should not penetrate us.

Today then let us live with the joy of Jesus. How can we acquire more and more of this joy of Jesus? Obviously from Jesus himself. Jesus is the only one who gives us the true joy that the world is lacking as we see in the soaps on TV. Jesus said, «If you remain in me and my words in you, you may ask whatever you want and it will be given to you» (Jn 15,7). Then let us spend time each day in prayer with the words of Jesus in the Scriptures, let us eat and consume the words of Jesus in the Scriptures, let them be our food, so that we may be satiated with the joy of Jesus: «Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person, which gives life a new horizon» (Benedict XVI).

Père saint, garde-les unis dans ton nom, le nom que tu m’as donné, pour qu’ils soient un, comme nous-mêmes. Quand j’étais avec eux, je les gardais unis dans ton nom, le nom que tu m’as donné. J’ai veillé sur eux, et aucun ne s’est perdu, sauf celui qui s’en va à sa perte de sorte que l’Écriture soit accomplie.

Et maintenant que je viens à toi, je parle ainsi, dans le monde, pour qu’ils aient en eux ma joie, et qu’ils en soient comblés. Moi, je leur ai donné ta parole, et le monde les a pris en haine parce qu’ils n’appartiennent pas au monde, de même que moi je n’appartiens pas au monde. Je ne prie pas pour que tu les retires du monde, mais pour que tu les gardes du Mauvais. Ils n’appartiennent pas au monde, de même que moi, je n’appartiens pas au monde. Sanctifie-les dans la vérité : ta parole est vérité. De même que tu m’as envoyé dans le monde, moi aussi, je les ai envoyés dans le monde. Et pour eux je me sanctifie moi-même, afin qu’ils soient, eux aussi, sanctifiés dans la vérité.».

L’Application

Jésus désire que nous soyons unis à son Père, comme ils sont UN. Ce désir divin ne s’actualisera que lorsque l’homme s’engage positivement à l’accomplissement de la volonté divine : un monde tout entier consacré à Dieu. Pour cela, nous devons prendre certaine décision d’appartenance, une appartenance dans la vérité. Je m’appartiens à qui et pour qui ? Jésus nous affirme que si vivions notre vie dans l’amour, dans l’amour divin, nous serons, nous aussi unis à son Père. C’est dans cette appartenance à cet amour divin que nous pourrions voir la création toute entière, comme une ouvre divine, et les différences comme une diversité dans l’unité, voulue par Dieu.

«Qu'ils aient en eux ma joie, et qu'ils en soient comblés»

Aujourd'hui, nous habitons un monde où l'on ne sait plus que faire pour être vraiment heureux de la joie de Jésus, un monde où l'on cherche cette joie partout où elle n'est pas et d'une façon aussi erronée que possible. Chercher cette joie sans Jésus ne peut que conduire à une tristesse plus profonde encore. Il suffit de regarder les feuilletons à la télé: il s'agit toujours de quelqu'un qui a des problèmes…. Ces feuilletons télévisés nous montrent les misères de la vie sans Dieu.

Mais, aujourd'hui, nous voulons vivre avec la joie de Jésus. Dans l'Évangile, Jésus prie son Père «je parle ainsi, en ce monde, pour qu'ils aient en eux ma joie, et qu'ils en soient comblés» (Jn 17,13). Notons bien que Jésus veut que nous soyons comblés par sa joie. Il veut que notre joie soit complète. Ce qui ne veut pas dire que nous ne portions pas notre croix, car «le monde les a pris en haine parce qu'ils ne sont pas du monde» (Jn 17,14). Mais Jésus attend de nous que nous sachions vivre avec sa joie sans que nous importe ce que le reste du monde pense de nous. La joie de Jésus doit nous imprégner jusqu'au plus profond de nous-mêmes sans que la clameur superficielle d'un monde sans Dieu puisse nous pénétrer.

Vivons, donc, aujourd'hui, avec la joie de Jésus. Et comment pouvons-nous parvenir à l'augmenter? Certainement par Jésus lui-même. Lui seul qui peut nous donner la véritable joie qui manque dans le monde, comme en témoignent ces feuilletons de la télé. Jésus dit, «Si vous demeurez en moi, et que mes paroles demeurent en vous, demandez tout ce que vous voudrez, et vous l'obtiendrez» (Jn 15,7). Consacrons, donc, chaque jour un peu de notre temps à prier avec les paroles de Jésus dans les Écritures; nourrissons-nous d'elles, pénétrons-nous en; qu'elles soient pour nous la nourriture qui rassasie de la joie de Jésus: «À l'origine du fait d'être chrétien, il n'y a pas une décision éthique ou une grande idée, mais la rencontre avec un événement, avec une Personne, qui donne à la vie un nouvel horizon et par là son orientation décisive» (Benoît XVI).

(Jn 17,1-11a): 

Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, «Father, the hour has come; give glory to your Son, that the Son may give glory to you. You have given him power over all mortals, and you want him to bring eternal life to all you have entrusted to him. For this is eternal life: to know you, the only true God, and the One you sent, Jesus Christ. I have glorified you on earth and finished the work that you gave me to do.

»Now, Father, give me in your presence the same Glory I had with you before the world began. I have made your name known to those you gave me from the world. They were yours and you gave them to me, and they kept your word. And now they know that all you have given me comes indeed from you. I have given them the teaching I received from you, and they received it and know in truth that I came from you; and they believe that you have sent me.

»I pray for them; I do not pray for the world but for those who belong to you and whom you have given to me —indeed all I have is yours and all you have is mine— and now they are my glory. I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world whereas I am going to you. Holy Father, keep them in your Name (that you have given me,) so that they may be one, just as we are».

The Application

I would like to invite you all to meditate on few themes for the day and apply them for the application.

Knowing God. This knowing God is the eternal life. We all know God and thus we are part of this eternal life, which has already started to give fruit by our positive engagement for the development of the humanity, the creation, as God created it for us. God as Creator and we as creation, have a common mission, which is given to us through Jesus Christ. Knowing God, is also synonym with knowing the divine will.

The glory of God. Jesus glorified God, by accomplishing this divine will. God glorified Jesus, by being with Him, throughout His mission on this earth. This God continues to be with us and accompany us. Thus, through the creation, and all that the creation helps us to sustain on this earth, is the way God glorifies us. It’s important that we also search for means and ways to glorify this God, because He has already glorified us.

The prayer of Jesus. It is important that I understand the way Jesus prayed with the Father? It’s simply a relation, dialogue, listening and silence. Its assuming the responsibility of taking care of the people confined to our responsibility. What have you done to your brother and sister? It’s the way we are called to pray, and it is what God speaks to us, and it is here we can accomplish the divine will. Imitation of Jesus, is also the imitation of the way Jesus glorified His Father. Thus, prayer is an act, willful engagement. Life is a prayer.

Action of the day: Be silent and listen to the voice of God.

«Father, the hour has come»

Today, St. John's Gospel —that we have been reading for days now— begins by speaking of “the hour”: «Father, the hour has come» (Jn 17:1). The crowning moment, the clarification of everything, the utmost donation of Christ who delivers himself to all... But “the hour” still is a hidden reality to men; it will be revealed as the scheme of Jesus' life will open the perspective of the Cross.

Has the hour come? What hour? Well, the hour when men will recognize God's name, that is, his actions, his way to address Mankind, his way to speak to us; in the Son, in the Christ He loves.

Now a day, men and women know God through Jesus («I have given them the teaching I received from you»: Jn 17:8), we become witnesses of life, of the divine life developing inside us thanks to the Baptism. In him, we live, we move, we are; in him, we find words that feed us and make us grow; in him, we discover what God wants out of us: our plenitude, our human realization, an existence that does not live out of personal vainglory but out of an existential attitude that becomes strong through the same God and his Glory. As St. Irineus remind us, «The Glory of God is living man». Let us exalt and praise God and his glory so that we, human beings, can reach our plenitude!

The Gospel of Jesus Christ marks us; we work for the glory of God, a task that translates in a better service for today's men and women's lives. This means working for true human communication, true happiness of the person, to increase the joy of the sad ones, to exert compassion on the needing... In short: open to Life (with capital letters).

For the Spirit, God works inside every human being and lives in the deepest part of the person constantly incentivating everybody to live as per the Gospel values. The Good News is the expression of the liberating happiness He wants to give us.

Ainsi parla Jésus. Puis il leva les yeux au ciel et pria ainsi: «Père, l'heure est venue. Glorifie ton Fils, afin que le Fils te glorifie. Ainsi, comme tu lui as donné autorité sur tout être vivant, il donnera la vie éternelle à tous ceux que tu lui as donnés. Or, la vie éternelle, c'est de te connaître, toi, le seul Dieu, le vrai Dieu, et de connaître celui que tu as envoyée, Jésus Christ. Moi, je t'ai glorifié sur la terre en accomplissant l'oeuvre que tu m'avais confiée.

»Toi, Père, glorifie-moi maintenant auprès de toi: donne-moi la gloire que j'avais auprès de toi avant le commencement du monde. J'ai fait connaître ton nom aux hommes que tu as pris dans le monde pour me les donner. Ils étaient à toi, tu me les as donnés, et ils ont gardé fidèlement ta parole. Maintenant, ils ont reconnu que tout ce que tu m'as donné vient de toi, car je leur ai donné les paroles que tu m'avais données: ils les ont reçues, ils ont vraiment reconnu que je suis venu d'auprès de toi, et ils ont cru que c'était toi qui m'avais envoyé.

»Je prie pour eux; ce n'est pas pour le monde que je prie, mais pour ceux que tu m'as donnés: ils sont à toi, et tout ce qui est à moi est à toi, comme tout ce qui est à toi est à moi, et je trouve ma gloire en eux. Désormais, je ne suis plus dans le monde; eux, ils sont dans le monde, et moi, je viens vers toi. Père saint, garde mes disciples dans la fidélité à ton nom que tu m'as donné en partage, pour qu'ils soient un, comme nous-mêmes».

«Père, l'heure est venue»

Aujourd'hui, l'Évangile de Saint Jean —que nous lisons depuis quelques jours— débute en nous parlant de “l'heure”: «Père, l'heure est venue» (Jn 17,1). Le moment culminant, la glorification de toute chose, l'offrande ultime de Christ qui se livre pour nous… “L'heure” est une réalité invisible aux yeux de l'Homme; qui se révèlera au fur et à mesure que la vie de Jésus nous laissera entrevoir la perspective de la croix.

L'heure est venue? L'heure de quoi? L'heure est venue de connaître le nom de Dieu, c'est-à-dire son action, la façon avec laquelle il se dirige à l'Humanité, sa façon de nous parler à travers de son Fils, Christ, qu'il aime.

Les hommes et les femmes d'aujourd'hui, ceux qui connaissent Dieux à travers de Jésus («Je leur ai donné les paroles que tu m'avais données»: Jn 17,8), sommes témoins de la vie, de la vie divine qui grandit en nous en vertu du sacrement baptismal. En Lui nous vivons, nous agissons et nous sommes; en Lui nous trouvons les paroles qui nous nourrissent et nous font grandir; en Lui nous découvrons ce que Dieu veut de nous: la plénitude, la réalisation humaine, une existence qui ne vit pas de vaine gloire personnelle, mais sinon d'une attitude existentielle qui s'appuie en Dieu lui-même et en sa gloire. Comme nous rappelle Saint Irène, «la gloire de Dieu est que l'homme vive». Rendons gloire à Dieux afin que la personne humaine arrive à sa plénitude!

Nous sommes marqués par l'Évangile de Jésus-Christ; travaillons sans cesse pour la gloire de Dieux, travail qui représente se mettre au service de la vie des hommes et des femmes d'aujourd'hui. Ce qui veut dire: travailler pour une authentique communication humaine, l'authentique bonheur de la personne, encourager la joie chez les tristes, ressentir la compassion pour les faibles… En résumé: être ouverts à la Vie (en majuscule).

À travers de l'esprit, Dieux travaille à l'intérieur de chaque être humain et habite au plus profond de la personne et ne cesse pas de nous encourager à puiser des valeurs de l'Évangile. La Bonne Nouvelle est l'expression du bonheur libérateur qu'Il veut nous donner.

(Jn 16,29-33): 

The disciples said to Jesus, «Now you are speaking plainly and not in veiled language! Now we see that you know all things, even before we question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God». Jesus answered them, «You say that you believe! The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each one to his home, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. I have told you all this, so that in me you may have peace. You will have trouble in the world; but, courage! I have overcome the world».

Today, we may have the feeling that the world of faith in Christ is weakening. Many are symptoms against the fortitude and courage we would like to receive from a life integrally based on the Gospel. Consumerism, capitalism, sensualism and materialism values are very much in fashion and against any representation that may be in tune with the evangelical demands. Nevertheless, this combination of values and life ways do not provide either our own personal plenitude or our peace; in fact, it rather brings an intimate feeling of discomfort and uneasiness. Could not it be because of this circumstance that, today, we see lots of people in public sulking, lost in though and worrying about a rather obscure future, most probably because they have pledged it against the cost of a car, a flat or some holidays they simply cannot afford?

Jesus' words inspire confidence: «Courage! I have overcome the world» (Jn 16:33), that is, through his Passion, Death and Resurrection, He has attained the eternal life, life with nothing to stop it, a limitless life because it has overcome all limits and all difficulties.

We, soldiers of Christ, can overcome these difficulties too, as He did, in spite of the fact we may have to go throughout our life through many deaths and resurrections, never wanted but certainly assumed by the very Paschal Mystery of Christ. For “deaths” indeed are, losing a friend, parting with a beloved person, the failure of a project or the limitations our own human weakness impose upon us…

But «in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us» (Rm 8:37). Let us be witnesses to God's love, because He has, with us, «done great things» (Lk 1:49) and has given us his help to overcome all difficulties, even death, because Christ is sending us the Holy Spirit.

Ses disciples lui disent alors: «Voici que tu parles ouvertement, sans employer de paraboles. Maintenant nous savons que tu sais toutes choses, et qu'il n'y a pas besoin de t'interroger: voilà pourquoi nous croyons que tu es venu de Dieu». Jésus leur répondit: «C'est maintenant que vous croyez! L'heure vient -et même elle est venue- où vous serez dispersés chacun de son côté, et vous me laisserez seul; pourtant je ne suis pas seul, puisque le Père est avec moi. Aujourd'hui, nous avons le sentiment que la foi en Jésus décline dans le monde. Il y a trop d'informations qui vont à l'encontre du soutien moral que nous recherchons dans une vie intégralement fondée sur l'Évangile. Les valeurs d'une société de consommation, du capitalisme, de la sensualité et du matérialisme sont à la mode et vont à l'encontre de tout ce qui pourrait s'associer aux exigences de l'Évangile. Néanmoins, cet ensemble de valeurs et de manières de vivre n'apportent ni l'épanouissement personnel ni la paix intérieure, mais au contraire ne nous apportent que malheur et inquiétude. Ne croyez-vous pas que c'est à cause de cela que les gens se promènent dans la rue renfrognés, renfermés sur eux mêmes et inquiets pour leur avenir incertain, car justement ils ont misé leur avenir sur le prix d'une voiture, d'un appartement ou des vacances qu'ils ne peuvent pas se payer?

Les paroles de Jésus nous invitent à la confiance: «Mais ayez confiance: moi, je suis vainqueur du monde» (Jn 16,33), c'est-à-dire que par sa Passion, sa Mort et sa Résurrection Il a obtenu la vie éternelle, la vie qui n'a pas d'obstacles, celle qui n'a pas de limites car elle a vaincu toutes les limites et a surmonté les épreuves.

Ceux qui appartiennent au Christ vaincront les difficultés comme Il l'a fait, même si nous devons pour cela passer par différentes morts et résurrections successives, non voulues certes, mais endurées par le même Mystère Pascal du Christ. Est-ce que la perte d'un ami n'est pas une mort? La séparation d'un être cher? L'échec d'un projet ou bien simplement d'être confrontés aux limites de par notre fragilité humaine?

Mais «en tout cela nous sommes les grands vainqueurs grâce à celui qui nous a aimés» (Rm 8,37). Soyons des témoins de l'amour de Dieu, parce que «le Puissant fit (...) des merveilles» (Lc 1,49) pour nous tous, et Il nous aide à surmonter toute difficulté y compris la mort, car le Christ nous transmet le Saint Esprit.

Gospel text (Jn 16, 23-28): 

Jesus said to his disciples, «When that day comes you will not ask me anything. Truly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my Name, He will give you. So far you have not asked in my Name; ask and receive that your joy may be full. I taught you all this in veiled language, but the time is coming when I shall no longer speak in veiled language, but will tell you plainly of the Father. When that day comes, you will ask in my Name and it will not be for me to ask the Father for you, for the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and you believe that I came from the Father. As I came from the Father and have come into the world, so I am leaving the world and going to the Father».

The Application

Jesus bids farewell to his disciples with words full of tenderness and love. Now the hour has come.  He has come from God and today He departs to His Father. The mission is accomplished, and we, his children, are called to follow Christ, our way to the Father.  This is why Jesus asks us to pray, to pray in his name. Since Jesus is God made Man, our prayer is more easily carried by the Son of Man.  He is the Head of this Church, we are the members. From now on, everything will happen with Him, in Him and through Him, the only door to the Kingdom of God.

Prayer is a request, certainly yes, but before asking, we must establish a relationship with God, an affective and fatherly relationship. This relationship is possible through Jesus, the beloved Son, the envoy of the Father, Man-God. Jesus, in his humanity, helps us to re-establish an affective relationship with his Father. It is in Jesus that we can love God and God makes us understand his love in Jesus.

Today, vigil of our Lord's Ascension into Heaven, the Gospel leaves us with some very fond farewell words. Jesus let us share his most precious mystery; God Father is his origin and, at the same time, his destination: «As I came from the Father and have come into the world, so I am leaving the world and going to the Father» (Jn 16:28).

This great Truth of the Second Person of the Holy Trinity should be constantly hammering into our heads: Jesus is really the Son of God: God Father is his origin and God Father is his destination.

For those who claim to know everything on God, but question Jesus' Divine filiation, today's Gospel has an important thing they should remember: “He, who” the Jews name God is who sent Jesus to us; He is, therefore, the Father to those who believe. With this we are clearly told that God can only and truly be known by those who accept Jesus' Father is God.

But Jesus' Divine filiation also reminds us of another important thing for our lives: those baptized into Christ are sons of God through the Holy Spirit. And this hides a most beautiful mystery for us: this adoptive fatherhood by God towards us is different of human adoption insofar it has a true foundation in each one of us, as it implies a new birth. Consequently, he who has been accepted in the great Divine Family is no longer a stranger to it.

This is why in the Mass Collects of the Ascension Day we shall all be reminded that all children must follow the steps of the Son: «Grant us, we pray, almighty God, the gift of a blessed joy and the rejoicing of a burning thanksgiving, for the Ascension into the heavens of Christ, your Son, also is our submission and glory, for where the Head ascended the body hopes to ascend, too». So no Christian should therefore let be left behind, for this is far more important than participating in any marathon race, the finishing line being in Heaven, with the very God!
