L'Evangile dans ma vie/ The Gospel in my life

Nous fêtons aujourd’hui la fête de l’Ascension et contemplons le moment fort de la vie de ses disciples. Pour avoir la même expérience, Jésus nous demande de nous rendre à la montagne comme lors de la Transfiguration, pour être avec Lui et être envoyé par Lui. Là, nous Le verrons tel qu’il est, non seulement dans son humanité, mais aussi dans sa divinité et Il nous aidera à passer d’une vie ordinaire de notre propre humanité, à une vie extraordinaire, dans sa divinité. Dans cette rencontre, en célébrant la fête de l’Ascension nous découvrons que le Christ est devenu le Seigneur du Ciel et de la Terre. C’est pourquoi dans le Christ le salut proposé est universel et d’ici on est envoyé au monde entier. Voilà la Bonne Nouvelle que l’Église annonce aujourd’hui et qu’elle vit quotidiennement.

Toute expérience ordinaire humaine est capable de nous faire ressentir une expérience extraordinaire sous l’impulsion de l’Esprit Saint. Si nous laissons pénétrer en nous la présence ordinaire de Dieu, si nous répondons positivement à son appel, nos actions seront empreintes du divin, car en nous Dieu continue son œuvre. C’est pourquoi, pour les chrétiens, en Jésus-Christ, tout ce que nous avons, devient extraordinaire. Devant cette merveille de Dieu, comme les Apôtres, nous nous prosternons dans l’adoration et reconnaissons que le Christ est notre Seigneur.

Nous ne pouvons pas annoncer cette Bonne Nouvelle, sans gravir la montagne du Seigneur. Aujourd’hui, cette montagne peut représenter pour moi, une personne avec qui je ne m’entends pas, une expérience que j’ai très mal vécue, ou un lieu qui m’a profondément marqué. Jésus nous demande d’y aller, non pas seuls, mais avec Lui, en sa présence, accompagnés par l’Esprit Saint, car Il nous a promis, qu’Il sera là, avec nous jusqu’à la fin du monde. D’ici, avec cette expérience extraordinaire, le Seigneur va nous élever, nous consacrer et va nous envoyer vers le monde entier. Soyons les missionnaires du Seigneur. Une Bonne Fête.

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension and contemplate the high point in the life of his disciples.  In order to have the same experience, Jesus asks us to go to the mountain as during the Transfiguration, to be with Him and to be sent by Him. There, we will see Him as He is, not only in His humanity, but also in His divinity and He will help us to pass from an ordinary life of our own humanity, to an extraordinary life, in His divinity. In this meeting,  while celebrating the feast of the Ascension, we discover that Christ has become the Lord of Heaven and Earth. That is why in Christ the salvation proposed is universal and from here we are sent to the whole world.  This is the Good News that the Church proclaims today and that she lives daily.

Every ordinary human experience is capable of making us to feel an extraordinary experience under the impulse of the Holy Spirit. If we allow God's ordinary presence to penetrate us, if we respond positively to his call, our actions will be imbued with the divine, for in us God continues his work. That is why, for Christians, in Jesus Christ, everything we have becomes extraordinary. Before this wonder of God, like the Apostles, we bow down in adoration and recognize that Christ is our Lord.

We cannot proclaim this Good News without climbing the mountain of the Lord. Today, this mountain can represent for me, a person with whom I do not get along, an experience that I have lived very badly, or a place that has deeply marked me. Jesus asks us to go there, not alone, but with Him, in His presence, accompanied by the Holy Spirit, because He has promised us that He will be there with us until the end of the world. From here, with this extraordinary experience, the Lord will lift us up, consecrate us and send us to the whole world. Let us be missionaries of the Lord. A Happy Feast.

Gospel text

(Jn 16,12-15): 

Jesus said to his disciples, «I still have many things to tell you, but you cannot bear them now. When He, the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into the whole truth. He has nothing to say of himself but he will speak of what he hears, and He will tell you of the things to come. He will take what is mine and make it known to you; in doing this, He will glorify me. All that the Father has is mine; because of this I have just told you, that the Spirit will take what is mine and make it known to you».

The Application

It is God who leads us, He leads us through the events of daily life, the sacred scriptures, the testimonies of the people, etc. and God the Father never works alone, it is the mystery of the Holy Trinity that Jesus comes to make us understand. This is essential for every humanity. When this togetherness is divinely oriented, then, we will feel the divine presence very close to our being. Without understanding this truth, as christia, we can never move forward.

The Holy Spirit comes, not only as our Advocate, but also as an educator who helps us to hear clearly all that Jesus has revealed and taught us.  He helps us to understand that even if revelation is complete in Jesus Christ, because of our human limitation, we cannot understand everything without a strong support of the Holy Spirit.

This is why a physical separation from the Lord is willed by the Father, so that the Spirit may come to help man to, in a certain way, "digest" the Word of Jesus.  If Jesus ascends to his Father, it is because he has accomplished everything; the Holy Spirit comes to be the witness of His presence among us.   Henceforth the Lord will be perceptible only in faith. It is the Holy Spirit who gives us this look of faith, so that we may live eternally in the presence of the Lord.

Action of the day: Be a sign of divine presence in the world.

Today, once again, our Lord, wants to open our eyes for us to realize that more often than not we make things completely wrong. «The Spirit of truth comes, will guide you into the whole truth» (Jn 16:13), what the Father made known to the Son.

How odd!, rather than letting the Spirit (a great unknown of our lives!) guide us, what we do is, either ignore him or “impose upon him” what we have already decided. But what we are told today, instead, is rather the contrary: to let him guide us.

—Lord, I'm thinking aloud... I reread today's Gospel and I think of the many boys and girls that will receive their Confirmation this year. I see those around me and I feel tempted to think: —They are still so “green”! To these ones, your Spirit is practically unknown; and they can be so easily influenced by everything and nothing, at the same time!

Make us, O Lord, who can be considered adults in your faith, effective instruments of your Spirit to become “conveyors” of your truth; to try to “guide”, to help opening up the hearts and the ears of those around us.

«I still have many things to tell you» (Jn 16:12). —Do not refrain, Lord, from speaking to us and revealing to us our own identities! Let your Spirit of Truth help us recognize what is false in our lives while giving us the necessary courage to get rid of it. Let him light up our hearts so that we can also recognize, whatever authentic is there inside us, which already shares your Truth. And that, by recognizing it, we know how to thank you for it and live up to it with joy.

Spirit of Truth, open up our hearts and our lives to Christ's Gospel: that this light be the light to lighten our daily existence. Holy Spirit, our Helper, make us strong to live Christ's truth, thereby giving testimony to everyone.

(Jn 16,12-15): 

«J'aurais encore beaucoup de choses à vous dire, mais pour l'instant vous n'avez pas la force de les porter. Quand il viendra, lui, l'Esprit de vérité, il vous guidera vers la vérité tout entière. En effet, ce qu'il dira ne viendra pas de lui-même: il redira tout ce qu'il aura entendu; et ce qui va venir, il vous le fera connaître. Il me glorifiera, car il reprendra ce qui vient de moi pour vous le faire connaître. Tout ce qui appartient au Père est à moi; voilà pourquoi je vous ai dit: Il reprend ce qui vient de moi pour vous le faire connaître».

L’Application

C’est Dieu qui nous conduit, Il nous conduit à travers les événements de la vie quotidienne, les écritures sacrées, les témoignages du peuple, etc.  Dieu le Père ne travaille jamais seul, c’est le mystère de la Sainte Trinité que Jésus vient nous faire comprendre. Sans comprendre cette vérité nous ne pouvons jamais nous avancer.

L’Esprit Saint vient, non seulement comme notre Défenseur, mais aussi comme un éducateur qui nous aide à entendre clairement tout ce que Jésus nous a révélé et enseigné.  Il nous aide à comprendre que même si la révélation est complète en Jésus-Christ, à cause de notre limitation humaine, nous ne pouvons pas tout comprendre sans un soutien important de l’Esprit Saint.

C’est pourquoi une séparation physique du Seigneur est voulue par le Père, pour que l’Esprit vienne aider l’homme à, d’une certaine façon, « digérer » la Parole de Jésus.  Si Jésus monte vers son Père, c’est qu’il a tout accompli, l’Esprit Saint vient pour être le témoin de sa présence parmi nous.   Désormais le Seigneur ne sera perceptible que dans la foi. C’est l’Esprit Saint qui nous donne ce regard de foi, pour que nous vivions éternellement dans la présence du Seigneur.

Aujourd'hui, Seigneur, une fois de plus, tu veux ouvrir nos yeux pour que nous voyions que trop souvent nous faisons les choses de travers. «L'Esprit de vérité, il vous guidera vers la vérité tout entière» (Jn 16,13), que le Père a fait connaître à son Fils.

Comme c'est curieux! En plus de ne pas nous laisser guider par l'Esprit (ce grand inconnu dans nos vies!), nous l'ignorons ou nous Lui “imposons” les choses quand nous avons pris nos décisions. Or, aujourd'hui, on nous dit plutôt le contraire: Le laisser nous guider.

Je pense, Seigneur, à haute voix... Je relis l'Évangile d'aujourd'hui et je songe aux garçons et aux filles qui recevront la Confirmation cette année. Je vois ceux qui m'entourent et suis tenté de penser: —Qu'ils sont jeunes! Ils ignorent tout de ton Esprit; et ils se laissent plutôt guider par tous et par personne!

Mais de nous, qui sommes considérés comme adultes dans la foi, fais des instruments efficaces de ton Esprit pour devenir des “propagateurs” de ta vérité; pour tâcher de “guider-accompagner”, afin que s'ouvrent les cœurs et les oreilles de ceux qui nous entourent.

«J'aurais encore beaucoup de choses à vous dire» (Jn 16,12). —Ne te retiens pas, Seigneur, de nous parler et de nous révéler ce que nous sommes! Que ton Esprit de Vérité nous fasse reconnaître tout ce qui est faux dans nos vies et nous donne le courage de pouvoir nous corriger. Qu'Il illumine nos coeurs et nous permette aussi de discerner ce qu'il y a en eux d'authentique et qui participe déjà de ta Vérité. Et qu'en nous en rendant compte, nous soyons reconnaissants et puissions le vivre avec joie.

Esprit de Vérité, ouvre nos cœurs et nos vies à l'Évangile du Christ: que celui-ci soit la lumière qui éclaire notre vie quotidienne. Esprit Défenseur, rends-nous forts pour vivre la vérité du Christ, en témoignant auprès de tous.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 16,5-11): 

«Je m'en vais maintenant auprès de celui qui m'a envoyé, et aucun de vous ne me demande: ‘Où vas-tu?’. Mais, parce que je vous ai parlé ainsi, votre coeur est plein de tristesse. Pourtant, je vous dis la vérité: c'est votre intérêt que je m'en aille, car, si je ne m'en vais pas, le Défenseur ne viendra pas à vous; mais si je pars, je vous l'enverrai. Quand il viendra, il dénoncera l'erreur du monde sur le péché, sur le bon droit, et sur la condamnation. Il montrera où est le péché, car l'on ne croit pas en moi. Il montrera où est le bon droit, car je m'en vais auprès du Père, et vous ne me verrez plus. Il montrera où est la condamnation, car le prince de ce monde est déjà condamné».

L’Application

La vérité nous sauvera, mais cette vérité est accompagnée d’une certaine tristesse, l’amertume de la séparation : ‘Je m’en vais maintenant auprès de Celui qui m’a envoyé’.  Pour les disciples du jour que nous sommes, la séparation du Seigneur, même si elle est douloureuse, n’est pas forcément une mauvaise nouvelle. En effet,  son amour et la connaissance de son amour nous accompagnent toujours. Il est ressuscité et Il va revenir. Il va revenir, non pas dans la faiblesse de l’homme, mais dans la gloire. Ce jour-là nous le verrons tel qu’Il est, comme le Fils du Père, non seulement comme un Dieu de miséricorde que le connaissons déjà, mais, comme Dieu de justice.  Que nous soyons prêts.

Pour cela, Jésus va nous envoyer l’Esprit Saint, le Défenseur, qui va nous accompagner dans la vie quotidienne, particulièrement dans les discernements du jour. Il va nous éduquer et  nous éclairer sur nos infidélités et notre incrédulité.  En sa présence, nous pouvons identifier les aspects de nos vies que nous devons améliorer. La reconnaissance de la vérité,  nous aidera à nous convertir. 

Demandons à l’Esprit Saint son don de sagesse et de discernement. Dans notre vie quotidienne, que nous sachions choisir toujours ce qui est bon et bien, particulièrement tout ce qui est juste devant Dieu.  Prions, "Viens Esprit Saint, et que le feu de ton amour brûle dans mon cœur. Que je ne désire que ce qui est pur, beau et saint, en accord avec la volonté de Dieu, et donne-moi le courage d'écarter tout ce qui n'est pas agréable à tes yeux".

«C'est votre intérêt que je m'en aille»

Aujourd'hui nous contemplons un autre départ de Jésus, nécessaire pour établir son Royaume. Cela comprend, cependant, une promesse : "Si je ne pars pas, le Paraclite ne viendra pas vers vous, mais si je pars, je vous l'enverrai (Jn 16,7).

Cette promesse s'est faite réalité d'une manière puissante le jour de la Pentecôte, dix jours après l'Ascension de Jésus au ciel. Ce jour-là – en plus de libérer de la tristesse le cœur des Apôtres et de ceux qui étaient réunis avec Marie, la Mère de Jésus (cf. Actes 1,13-14) – Il les confirme et les renforce dans la foi, de telle sorte que, "tous se remplirent du Saint Esprit, et commencèrent à parler en d'autres langues, comme le Saint Esprit les faisait s'exprimer (Actes, 2,4).

Ce fait s'est "concrétisé" tout au long des siècles à travers l'Eglise, une, sainte, catholique et apostolique, puisque, par le biais du même Esprit promis, on annonce à tous et partout que Jésus de Nazareth – le Fils de Dieu, né de la Vierge Marie, qui fut crucifié, mort et enseveli – est vraiment ressuscité, qu'Il est assis à la droite de Dieu le Père (cf. Credo) et qu'Il vit parmi nous. Son Esprit est en nous grâce au Baptême, nous convertissant en enfants dans le Fils, réaffirmant sa présence dans chacun de nous le jour de la Confirmation. Tout ceci pour mener à terme notre vocation de sainteté et renforcer la mission d'appeler les autres à devenir saints.

Ainsi, grâce à la volonté du Père, la rédemption du Fils et l'action constante du Saint Esprit, nous pouvons tous répondre à cet appel avec une entière fidélité, en étant des saints ; et, avec une charité apostolique audacieuse, sans être exclusifs, mener à bien la mission, en proposant et en aidant les autres à l'être.

Comme les premiers – comme les fidèles de toujours – avec Marie, prions et, en étant sûrs que le Défenseur viendra à nouveau et qu'il y aura une nouvelle Pentecôte, disons : "Viens, Saint Esprit, remplis le cœur de tes fidèles et allume en eux la flamme de ton amour" (Alléluia de Pentecôte).

Gospel text

(Jn 16,5-11): 

Jesus said to his disciples, «But now I am going to the One who sent me and none of you asks me where I am going; instead you are overcome with grief because of what I have said. Indeed believe me: It is better for you that I go away, because as long as I do not leave, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go away, it is to send him to you, and when He comes, He will vindicate the truth in face of the world with regard to sin, to the way of righteousness, and to the Judgment. What has been the sin? They did not believe in me. What is the way of righteousness? I am on the way to the Father, meanwhile you will not see me. What Judgment? The Ruler of this world has himself been condemned».

The Application

The truth will save us, but this truth is accompanied by a certain sadness, the bitterness of separation: 'I go now to Him who sent me'.  For the disciples of this day that we are, the separation of the Lord from the world physically, though painful, is not necessarily bad news. Indeed, His love and the knowledge of His love always accompany us. He has risen and He will return. He will return, not in man's weakness, but in glory. On that day we will see Him as He is, as the Son of the Father, not only as a God of mercy whom we already know, but as a God of justice.  We have to be ready to face this God of justice.

For this, Jesus will send us the Holy Spirit, the Defender, who will accompany us in daily life, especially in the discernments of the day. He will educate us and enlighten us about our infidelities and unbelief.  In his presence we can identify aspects of our lives that we need to improve. In silence, without making any noise of His presence, the Holy Spirit will accompany us in our daily discernment. A life filled with love, expressed in mercy and executed in charity. The recognition of the truth will help us to convert and adhere to the impulsion of the Holy Spirit. 

Let us ask the Holy Spirit for his gift of wisdom and discernment. In our daily lives, may we always know how to choose what is good and right, especially everything that is right before God.  Let us pray, "Come Holy Spirit, and may the fire of your love burn in my heart. May I desire only that which is pure, beautiful and holy, in accordance with God's will, (an act of love) and give me the courage to put aside all that is not pleasing in your sight".

Action of the day: Have courage and be filled with grace, in words and deeds.

«It is better for you that I go away»

Today, we are presented with a deeper understanding of the reality of the Ascension of the Lord. In the reading from the Gospel of John on Easter Sunday, Mary of Magdala is told not to cling to the Lord because «I have not yet ascended to my Father» (Jn 20:17). In today's Gospel Jesus notes that the disciples «are overcome with grief because of what I have said», but that «it is better for you that I go away» (Jn 16:6-7). Jesus must ascend to the Father. Yet, He still remains with us.

How can he go, yet still remain? This mystery was explained by our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI: «Given that God embraces and sustains the whole cosmos, the Lord's Ascension means that Christ has not gone far away from us, but now, thanks to the fact that He is with the Father, He is close to each one of us forever».

Our hope is in Jesus Christ. His conquest of death gave us the life that death can never destroy, His Life. His resurrection is a verification that the spiritual is real. Nothing can separate us from the love of God. Nothing can diminish our hope. The negatives of the world cannot destroy the positive of Jesus Christ.

The imperfect world we live in, a world where the innocent suffer, can point us to pessimism. But Jesus Christ has transformed us into eternal optimists.

The living presence of the Lord in our community, in our families, in those aspects of our society that can rightfully be called “Christian” have given us a reason for hope. The Living Presence of the Lord within each one of us has given us joy. No matter how great the barrage of negatives that the media delights in presenting, the positives of the world far outweigh the negatives, for Jesus Christ has risen.

He ascended, but He has not left us.

Gospel text

(Jn 15,26—16,4): 

Jesus said to his disciples, «From the Father, I will send you the Spirit of truth. When this Helper has come from the Father, He will be my witness, and you, too, will be my witnesses for you have been with me from the beginning. I tell you all this to keep you from stumbling and falling away. They will put you out of the Jewish communities. Still more, the hour is coming when anyone who kills you will claim to be serving God; they will do this because they have not known the Father or me. I tell you all these things now so that when the time comes you may remember that I told you. I did not tell you about this in the beginning because I was with you».

The Application

We are a people in love with God and we express this love through the love we have for one another. It is in this love that we become witnesses to the truth, so that others, by observing our private life, our ability to forgive ourselves, may discover the Holy Spirit who animates us. This is the secret of the Christian life. If we allow ourselves to be animated by this Spirit of truth, He will help us to discover the divine will. By fulfilling the divine will, Christ, the one sent by the Father, will live in us and we in Him: thus we will bear witness to the world as St Paul did, "I live, but it is no longer I, but Christ who lives in me" (Letter of St Paul to the Galatians, V20).

When our life is fully configured to Christ, animated by the Holy Spirit, we will become righteous before God and wise before men. A man of faith and good will, will do ordinary deeds in an extraordinary way. These acts have their origin in God, for it is the Holy Spirit who dwells in us and who impels us towards such and such an act: a perfect discernment before men and a righteous act before God.

Moved by the love of God and neighbor, let us rejoice in God, whatever opposition or persecution may be inflicted. Indeed, the Defender, the Paraclete, the Father's Envoy, will protect us and give us courage. On that day, death will no longer be the end of life, but a new life, a new birth with God and in God. 

Action of the day: In a troubled time, put your confidence in the Lord.

«I will send you the Spirit of truth. When this Helper has come from the Father, He will be my witness»

Today, the Gospel is almost as applicable as it was in the last years of St. John the Evangelist. In those days, to be a Christian was not in fashion (in fact, it was rather dangerous) as, now a days, it is not either. Should we want to be well regarded by our society, we better not be Christians, because, in many ways —as it happened to the first Christian Jews— «they will put us out of the Jewish communities» (Jn 16:2).

We are well aware that to be a Christian today is to go upstream. It has always been. Even when “everybody” was a Christian: those who really wanted to be Christians were not too well considered by some. If abiding by Jesus Christ's law, a Christian is a living witness of what God had planned for all men; it is the clear evidence that it is both possible to imitate Jesus Christ and to live with a man's dignity. Many, though, will not be pleased with this example, very much in the same way as Jesus displeased those who killed him. The reasons for this refusal may be several, and we have to bear in mind that, at times, our testimony will be taken as an accusation.

It would not be fair to say that, because of his writings, St. John was a pessimist: he gives us a vivid description of a victorious Church and of Christ's final triumph. It cannot be said either he did not have to go through the same suffering he describes. He does not hide the reality of life or the substance of Christian life: to fight.

A fight for all concerned, for we can never win by ourselves. The Holy Spirit is our battle partner who fights by our side. The Holy Spirit gives us the necessary strength. The Holy Spirit is the Protector, who delivers us from all danger. With The Holy Spirit by our side we should not be afraid of anything.

John fully trusted Jesus; He offered him his life. Thus, it was not difficult for him to trust He Who was sent by Him: the Holy Spirit.

«Quand viendra le Défenseur, que je vous enverrai d'auprès du Père, lui, l'Esprit de vérité qui procède du Père, il rendra témoignage en ma faveur. Et vous aussi, vous rendrez témoignage, vous qui êtes avec moi depuis le commencement. Je vous dis tout cela pour que vous ne risquiez pas de tomber. On vous exclura de la synagogue. Et même, l'heure vient où tous ceux qui vous tueront s'imagineront offrir ainsi un sacrifice à Dieu. Ils le feront parce qu'ils ne connaissent ni le Père ni moi. Mais voici pourquoi je vous dis tout cela: quand cette heure sera venue, vous vous souviendrez que je vous l'avais dit. Je ne vous l'ai pas dit dès le commencement, parce que j'étais avec vous».

L’Application

Nous sommes un peuple amoureux de Dieu et nous exprimons cet amour à travers l’amour que nous avons les uns pour les autres. C’est dans cet amour que nous devenons les témoins de la vérité, pour que les autres, en observant notre vie privée, notre capacité à nous pardonner, découvrent l’Esprit Saint qui nous anime. Voilà le secret de la vie chrétienne. Si nous nous laissons animer par cet Esprit de vérité, Il nous aidera à découvrir la volonté divine. En accomplissant la volonté divine, le Christ, l’envoyé du Père, vivra en nous et nous en Lui.: Ainsi nous témoigneront au monde comme saint Paul, « Je vis, mais ce n’est plus moi, c’est le Christ qui vit en moi » (Lettre de Saint Paul aux Galates, V20)

Lorsque notre vie sera entièrement configurée au Christ, animée par l’Esprit Saint, nous deviendrons justes devant Dieu, et sages devant les hommes. Un homme de foi et de bonne volonté,  fera les actes ordinaires d’une manière extraordinaire. Ces actes ont leur origine en Dieu, car c’est l’Esprit Saint qui demeure en nous et qui nous pousse vers tel et tel acte: un discernement parfait devant les hommes et un acte juste devant Dieu.

Animés par l’amour de Dieu et du prochain, réjouissons-nous en Dieu, quelles que soient les oppositions ou persécutions infligées. En effet, Le Défenseur, le Paraclet, l’Envoyé du Père, nous protègera et nous donnera le courage. Ce jour-là, la mort ne sera plus la fin de la vie, mais une nouvelle vie, une nouvelle naissance auprès Dieu et en Dieu.

Aujourd'hui, dans l'Évangile Jésus annonce et promet la venue de l'Esprit Saint : "Quand viendra le Paraclite (…) qui provient du Père, Il rendra témoignage en ma faveur (Jn 15,26). "Paraclite" signifie littéralement "celui qui est appelé auprès de quelqu'un", et qu'on traduit habituellement par "Consolateur". De cette manière, Jésus nous rappelle la bonté de Dieu, car l'Esprit Saint étant l'amour de Dieu, Il inspire la paix dans nos cœurs, la sérénité dans l'adversité et la joie pour les choses de Dieu. Il nous fait regarder vers les choses du ciel et nous unir à Dieu.

De plus, Jésus dit aux Apôtres "Vous aussi vous rendrez témoignage" (Jn 15,27). Pour rendre témoignage il faut:

1° Etre en communion et proche de Jésus. Cela naît du contact quotidien avec Lui : lire l'Évangile, écouter ses paroles, connaître ses enseignements, pratiquer ses sacrements, être en communion avec l'Église, imiter son exemple, obéir aux commandements, le voir dans les saints, le reconnaître dans nos frères, avoir son esprit et l'aimer. Il s'agit d'avoir une expérience personnelle et vive avec Jésus.

2° Notre témoignage est crédible s'il se reflète dans nos œuvres. Un témoin n'est pas seulement celui qui sait que quelque chose est vrai, mais qui est aussi prêt à le dire et à le vivre. Ce que nous expérimentons et vivons dans notre âme, nous devons le transmettre à l'extérieur. Nous sommes des disciples de Jésus non seulement lorsque nous connaissons ses enseignements, mais – et surtout – quand nous voulons et faisons en sorte que les autres Le connaissent et L'aiment. Comme dit le dicton : "Les paroles émeuvent, les exemples rallient".

Le Pape François nous disait : Je suis reconnaissant pour le bel exemple que me donnent de nombreux chrétiens qui offrent leur vie et leur temps avec joie. Ce témoignage me fait beaucoup de bien et me soutient dans mon désir de surmonter l'égoïsme pour m'engager davantage". Et il ajoutait : "Je veux vous demander en particulier un témoignage de communion fraternelle qui devienne attractif et resplendissant". C'est toujours une lumière qui attire.

Today we celebrate the 6th Sunday of Easter and we are invited to look at the humanity of Jesus and how in his humanity the divinity is united. His teachings, especially in the Gospel of St. John, we discover this humanity of the divinity and how we on our part can act divinely in our own humanity. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit work together, united in love. Jesus desires that we also be united in this love. Therefore, He asks us to be faithful to His commandment of love.

Jesus is asking this fidelity, because of the imminent danger of death on the cross and in later days, the persecution. The second reading gives us one such history, where immediately after the martyrdom of Stephan, Philippe the deacon is sent to encourage the people of Samaria.  Neither the persecution, nor the need of more preachers, could stop the announcing of the Good News. It all happened, because of two important elements. The first is the working of the Holy Spirit and the second is, the love of the disciples for the Lord.

True love asks us to get to know ourselves, the Truth. Jesus says, ‘the truth will save us.’  To do this, we must be able to open ourselves to others: to commit ourselves for our own good and for the common good.   This love is not an intellectual knowledge, but the commitment to communion and sharing. That is why we are told that love is an act.   The love we have for one another is a response to divine love, a recognition of his acts of love and his commitment to the good of us all. The death on the Cross was the best sign that God has chosen to express His love for us. How to forget the Cross that saved us?

It is with Jesus and in Jesus that man can know the Father and through the humanity of Christ that we can love God. If we do not know Christ, as the one sent by the Father, dead and risen, for all of us, it is difficult to identify the divine presence in our lives and to recognize his works.  St. Augustine asks us to seek Him in the works of love.  He is convinced that we must seek Him in order to know Him, and how can we love Him without knowing Him? "The soul of one who does not seek the face of his Creator remains cold in itself and hardens in the wrong way. "says St. Gregory the Great. 

If our life is filled with this divine love, and if our words and deeds are resourced in this act of love, Jesus assures us that we will live in Him. If we live in Jesus Christ, God will manifest His presence to us and we will see Him everywhere and in everyone. For this, Jesus will send us His Spirit, the Spirit of truth, who will accompany us all our lives. Let us be filled with love and let us prepare to welcome this Spirit of Truth who will help us to identify the divine presence and to recognize not only the divine manifestation in our daily lives, but also His works in the hearts of men.  The deeper we love one another, the closer will be the divine presence in our lives. (Jn 15,18-21): 

Jesus said to his disciples, «If the world hates you, remember that the world hated me before you. This would not be so if you belonged to the world, because the world loves its own. But you are not of the world since I have chosen you from the world; because of this the world hates you. Remember what I told you: the servant is not greater than his master; if they persecuted me, they will persecute you, too. Have they kept my teaching? Will they then keep yours? All this they will do to you for the sake of my name because they do not know the One who sent me».

Action of the day: act as a heavenly being, a person of Faith, of God.

Today, the Gospel opposes the world to Christ's followers. The world represents whatever sinful there may be in our existence. Consequently, one of the main characteristics of Christ's followers is fighting all evil and sin to be found in the world and inside every man. This is why, Jesus is the light of men, the light that illuminates the world's darkness. Karol Wojtyla exhorts us «so that this light makes us strong and capable to accept and love the entire Truth of Christ, and love it even more when opposed by our world».

Neither Christians nor the Church can follow the passing fads or criteria of this world. Christ's criterion is the unique, definitive and unavoidable one for us to follow. It is not up to Jesus to adapt himself to the world where we live; it is up to us instead to transform our lives after Jesus. «Christ is the same one whether yesterday, today or always». This should make us wonder. When our secularized society demands from us and from the Church certain changes or licences, we are simply being asked us to move away from God. We, Christians, however, should be faithful to Christ and to his message. Saint Ireneus says: «God does not need anything; but man needs to be in permanent communion with God. And man's glory lies in persevering and always keep in God's service».

This fidelity may, quite often, mean persecution: «If they persecuted me, they will persecute you, too» (Jn 15:20). We should not be afraid of persecution; we should rather be afraid of not attempting strongly enough to always make God's will. Let's be brave and let us proclaim without any fear Christ resurrected, light and joy of all Christians! Let us leave the Holy Spirit to transform us so that we can inform the whole world about it!
