Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 6,30-34):

Abbé David COMPTE i Verdaguer
(Manlleu, Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mk 6,14-29):

King Herod also heard about Jesus because his name had become well-known. Some people said, «John the Baptist has been raised from the dead and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him». Others thought, «He is Elijah», and others, «He is a prophet like the prophets of times past». When Herod was told of this, he thought: «I had John beheaded, yet he has risen from the dead!». For this is what had happened. Herod had ordered John to be arrested and had him bound and put in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. Herod had married her and John had told him, «It is not right for you to live with your brother’s wife». So Herodias held a grudge against John and wanted to kill him, but she could not because Herod respected John. He knew John to be an upright and holy man and kept him safe. And he liked listening to him, although he became very disturbed whenever he heard him.

Herodias had her chance on Herod's birthday, when he gave a dinner for all the senior government officials, military chiefs and the leaders of Galilee. On that occasion the daughter of Herodias came in and danced; and she delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, «Ask me for anything you want and I will give it to you». And she went so far as to say with many oaths, «I will give you anything you ask, even half my kingdom». She went out to consult her mother, «What shall I ask for?». The mother replied, «The head of John the Baptist». The girl hurried to the king and made her request: «I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist, here and now, on a dish». The king was very displeased, but he would not refuse in front of his guests because of his oaths. So he sent one of the bodyguards with orders to bring John's head. He went and beheaded John in prison; then he brought the head on a dish and gave it to the girl. And the girl gave it to her mother. When John's disciples heard of this, they came and took his body and buried it.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers

The Weakness of the Tyrant and the Power of the Beheaded,

by John Chrysostom (347-407 AD)

"Note well the weakness of the tyrant compared to the power of the one in prison. Herod was not strong enough to silence his own tongue. Having opened it, he opened up countless other mouths in its place and with its help. As for John, he immediately inspired fear in Herod after his murder - for fear was disturbing Herod's conscience to such an extent that he believed John had been raised from the dead and was performing miracles (Mark 6:14-16)! In our own day and through all future time, throughout all the world, John continues to refute Herod, both through himself and through others. For each person repeatedly reading this Gospel says: 'It is not lawful for you to have the wife of Philip your brother' (Mark 6:18). And even apart from reading the Gospel, in assemblies and meetings at home or in the market, in every place... even to the very ends of the earth, you will hear this voice and see that righteous man even now still crying out, resounding loudly, reproving the evil of the tyrant. He will never be silenced nor the reproof at all weakened by the passing of time." (excerpt from ON THE PROVIDENCE OF GOD 22.8-9)

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 6,14-29):

Abbé Ferran BLASI i Birbe
(Barcelona, Espagne)

Scripture:

Mark 6:7-13

7 And he called to him the twelve, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8 He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; 9 but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics. 10 And he said to them, "Where you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. 11 And if any place will not receive you and they refuse to hear you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet for a testimony against them." 12 So they went out and preached that men should repent. 13 And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them.

The Application

I would like to invite you all to meditate on certain points, hoping you to choose one among these points for your daily gospel application.

Called and sent

Jesus had many followers. However, He has chosen very few to announce the Good News. Happily we are one among them. Called, consecrated in our baptism and sent to the whole world to be the witness of divine mercy. The more we remain connected to this self-awareness (of our call and consecration), the better will be our engagement.

Two by two

Though it is an individual call and vocation, Jesus wishes that our missionary endeavour be a communitarian engagement. Sending two by two, Jesus prepares us for any eventuality, firstly, we should learn to work together and in an eventual opposition or rejection by our beneficiaries, may our mission of announcing the Good News, may have a relay for the perpetuity.

Authority and dependence

Jesus has given us this divine authority to represent Him in our daily life, particularly in a witnessing life, and more importantly while announcing the Good News. It is here He wishes that we depend on the divine providence than the material necessities. All that we need, to announce the Good News, will be given in due time. It is in this total surrender to the divine will and our utter dependence in the divine providence that we can acquirer and act legitimately with the divine authority.

Daily Needs

Jesus wishes to announce the Good News by responding to the basic human needs. God takes care not only our spiritual needs, but also our daily charnel needs. By the very fact of incarnation, He wishes to elevate us, from an ordinary being, to be a divine being. The best way of announcing the Good News is by responding positively to the daily needs of our brothers and sisters. It is in our daily events and moments of life that God wishes to encounter us.

Action of the Day:  Learn to work together.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

Jesus gives them power to heal and cast out evil spirits,

by Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD)

"The grace bestowed upon the holy apostles is worthy of all admiration. But the bountifulness of the Giver surpasses all praise and admiration. He gives them, as I said, his own glory. They receive authority over the evil spirits. They reduce to nothing the pride of the devil that was so highly exalted and arrogant. They render ineffectual the demon’s wickedness. By the might and efficacy of the Holy Spirit, burning them as if they were on fire, they make the devil come forth with groans and weeping from those whom he had possessed...
"He glorified his disciples, therefore, by giving them authority and power over the evil spirits and over sicknesses. Did he honor them without reason and make them famous without any logical cause? How can this be true? It was necessary, most necessary, that they should be able to work miracles, having been publicly appointed ministers of sacred proclamations. By means of their works, they then could convince men that they were the ministers of God and mediators of all beneath the heaven. The apostles then could invite them all to reconciliation and justification by faith and point out the way of salvation and of life that is this justification."

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 6,7-13):

+ Abbé Josep VALL i Mundó
(Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mk 6,1-6):

Jesus returned to his own country, and his disciples followed him. When the Sabbath came, He began teaching in the synagogue, and most of those who heard him were astonished. They commented, «How did this come to him? What kind of wisdom has been given to him that he also performs such miracles? Who is he but the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon? His sisters, too, are they not here among us?». So they took offense at him. And Jesus said to them, «Prophets are despised only in their own country, among their relatives and in their own family». And he could work no miracles there, but only healed a few sick people by laying his hands on them. Jesus himself was astounded at their unbelief. Jesus then went around the villages teaching.

The Application

Jesus wishes that we may not be conditioned by the behavior of others. Jesus himself has taught us that the good deeds have to continue, immaterial of the rejection. He is sad that these people couldn’t profit from His presence.

As a faithful believer, we should learn to make use of this opportunity of being with the Lord and allow the grace to work in us. The more we are open to the grace, the better efficient will be the fruit. It is in our openness, the way we allow the Spirit of God in freedom, to work in us, that we will find the joy of being Christian.

The opposition of the country men was well perceived. However, Jesus continues to go towards them. This coming of Jesus towards us , do give us the necessary hope of conversion and grace. This Lord will never abandon us, will continue to come towards us. However, Jesus will remind us, when He comes, will He find us filled with hope and charity or….?

Action of the day: Be open to the impulsion of the Lord.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

Distinguishing God's power and our faith,

by Origen of Alexandria (185-254 AD)`

"And perhaps, as in the case of metallic substances there exists in some a natural attraction toward some other thing, as in the magnet for iron, and in naphtha for fire, so there is an attraction in such faith toward the divine power according to what Jesus said: 'If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say unto this mountain, 'Move to another place,' and it shall be moved' (Matthew 17:20). Matthew and Mark wished to present the all-surpassing value of that divine power as a power that works even in those who do not believe. But they did not deny that grace works even more powerfully among those who have faith. So it seems to me that they accurately said not that the Lord did not do any mighty works because of their unbelief, but that he did not do many there (Mark 6:5). Mark does not flatly say that he could do no mighty work there at all, and stop at that point, but added, 'except that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk and healed them' (Mark 6:5). Thus the power in him overcame even their unbelief." (excerpt from COMMENTARY ON MATTHEW 10.19)

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 6,1-6):

Abbé Miquel MASATS i Roca
(Girona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mk 5,21-43):

Jesus crossed to the other side of the lake and while He was still on the shore, a large crowd gathered around him. Jairus, an official of the synagogue, came up and seeing Jesus, threw himself at his feet and asked him earnestly, «My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her so that she may get well and live».

Jesus went with him and many people followed, pressing from every side. Among the crowd was a woman who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a lot at the hands of many doctors and had spent everything she had, but instead of getting better, she was worse. Since she had heard about Jesus, this woman came up behind him and touched his cloak thinking, «If I just touch his clothing, I shall get well». Her flow of blood dried up at once, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her complaint. But Jesus was conscious that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, «Who touched my clothes?». His disciples answered, «You see how the people are crowding around you. Why do you ask who touched you?». But he kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the woman, aware of what had happened, came forward trembling and afraid. She knelt before him and told him the whole truth. Then Jesus said to her, «Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace and be free of this illness».

While Jesus was still speaking, some people arrived from the official's house to inform him, «Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Master any further?». But Jesus ignored what they said and told the official, «Do not fear, just believe». And He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James and John, the brother of James.

When they arrived at the house, Jesus saw a great commotion with people weeping and wailing loudly. Jesus entered and said to them, «Why all this commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep». They laughed at him. But Jesus sent them outside and went with the child's father and mother and his companions into the room where the child lay. Taking her by the hand, he said to her, «Talitha kumi!» which means: “Little girl, get up!”. The girl got up at once and began to walk around. (She was twelve years old.) The parents were astonished, greatly astonished. Jesus strictly ordered them not to let anyone know about it, and told them to give her something to eat.

The Application

Sometime we are cornered and could move nowhere. The hope and faith seem to produce no fruit. Totally broken without any means of recuperation, we surrender to God, the only source of our hope and the Faith does make miracle, in such a desperate moment of life, beyond our imagination and expectation. It’s here we discover how wonderful is our God and how merciful He is, even today, after all of our unfaithfulness. This divine encounter transforms the person and gives a new life, life in God, totally from God and for God.

«Do not fear, just believe» is the humble request of the Lord, particularly in our troubled life.  Jesus is here to console us, protect us and to give us life. Gospel say that ‘Jesus crossed’ and this crossing over is for our salvation.  He makes Himself available to us, sometime personally and very often through different means and persons, so that we may see Him and approach Him. From our part we need to take little effort, against the currents of our time and the society. When we say YES to God, just like Mary, the mother of God, we too will witness the wonders that the Lord enacts on our favor.

This little girl is sent back to the same society, to be the living witness of divine providence. All those who have received the grace from the Lord, particularly the Holy Spirit, in our baptism, are called, anointed and sent to be the living witness of divine goodness and providence.  It is in this divine goodness that David cried for the death of his son. It is in the same divine goodness that we are called to forgive and be givers of life.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

The long-suffering of parents,

by Peter Chrysologus (400-450 AD)

"Let us, if it is pleasing to you, speak for a moment of the pains and anxieties which parents take upon themselves and endure in patience out of love and affection for their children. Here, surrounded by her family and by the sympathy and affection of her relations, a daughter lies upon her bed of suffering. She is fading in body. Her father's mind and spirit are worn with grief. She is suffering the inward pangs of her sickness. He, unwashed, unkempt, is absorbed wholly in sorrow. He suffers and endures before the eyes of the world. She is sinking into the quiet of death... Alas! why are children indifferent to these things! Why are they not mindful of them? Why are they not eager to make a return to their parents for them? But the love of parents goes on nevertheless; and whatever parents bestow upon their children, God, the parent of us all, will duly repay." (excerpt from SERMON 33.2)

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 5,21-43):

Abbé Francesc PERARNAU i Cañellas
(Girona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mk 5,1-20):

Jesus and his disciples arrived on the other side of the lake in the region of the Gerasenes. No sooner did Jesus leave the boat than He was met by a man with evil spirits who had come from the tombs. He lived among the tombs and no one could restrain him, even with a chain. He had often been bound with fetters and chains but he would pull the chains apart and smash the fetters, and no one had the strength to control him. Night and day he stayed among the tombs on the hillsides, and was continually screaming and beating himself with stones. When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell at his feet and cried with a loud voice, «What do you want with me, Jesus, son of the Most High God? For God's sake I beg you, do not torment me». He said this because Jesus had commanded, «Come out of the man, evil spirit». And when Jesus asked him, «What is your name?», he replied, «Legion is my name, for we are many». And all of them kept begging Jesus not to send them out of that region.

Now, a great herd of pigs was feeding on the hillside, and the evil spirits begged him, «Send us to the pigs and let us go into them». So Jesus let them go. The evil spirits came out of the man and went into the pigs, and immediately the herd rushed down the cliff and all were drowned in the lake. The herdsmen fled and reported this in the town and in the countryside, so all the people came to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and saw the man freed of the evil spirits sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, the same man who had been possessed by the legion. They were afraid. And when those who had seen it told what had happened to the man and to the pigs, the people begged Jesus to leave their neighborhood.

When Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed begged to stay with him. Jesus would not let him and said, «Go home to your people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how He has had mercy on you». So he went throughout the country of Decapolis telling everyone how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were astonished.

The Application

We all have one such experience in our life. Sometime our pains and sufferings overtake us and we become miserable, beyond redemption, without any fault of ours. It’s here God comes to visit us and console us. Very often, during these difficult moments of life that God forms, transforms us and makes us great. In our troubled time, God doesn’t abandon us, rather takes everything into Himself. It is in such moments of life that God wishes that we realize His love and concern.  The fast we realize this truth, the better will be our availability to accomplish the divine will. Most of the saviors in the world, were once saved by the Lord.

The gospel of the day gives us three basic qualities of such people and may help us to imitate and apply them in our daily life. Let’s look at this healed man;  “They came to Jesus and saw the man freed of the evil spirits sitting there, clothed and in his right mind

Sitting

Many of us find difficult to get settled and be alone. We all like movements in life and distractions, because such things make us active and engaged. Sitting symbolically signifies a calm and serenity. It’s a moment of digestion and contemplation. Time to meditate and recall. This man is invited to do so, after a troubled life. This ‘sitting’ also signifies an interior not troubled by the exterior movements, a society fully agitated of the events, concerning him, pigs and evidently Jesus.  His disassociation to these external events can help us to take a distance from the external world, to enter into our own interiority, which is more important than what happens to others. It is here we will have the divine encounter, or healing.

Clothing

It is important to cloth ourselves with good qualities and value system, without any obligation, but in freedom and liberty. The external clothing is also a sign of internal change that the person has undergone. Many of us wish that God changes our external situations and controls these events. All that God wishes is to enter into our own interiority, so that we may be able to see the exterior events, with an eye of the Lord, filled with love and compassion. Even in our own painful experiences, God is capable of making us happy, provided we learn to see in these events, the divine presence and God’s accompaniment.

The right minded

The more we realize that God is love and merciful, the better will be our approach in our personal life. The conversion is possible only with a love experience. It is after recalling the wonderful time the prodigal son had with the father that he become to the sense and moved towards the Father. We all need in one way or the other, this healing touch of Jesus. The more we attach ourselves to the divine will, the better will be our senses. It is in God alone that we will find this inner peace and joy. Jesus is always there to liberate us and to heal us.

Action of the day: Be calm and come to senses.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

The God-Man beheld,

by Gregory of Nazianzus (330 - 390 AD)

"Yes, he is recognized by demons (Luke 4:33-34, Mark 1:23-24), drives out demons (Matthew 8:16, Mark 1:34), drowns deep a legion of spirits (Matthew 8:32; Mark 5:9,13; Luke 8:30,33) and sees the prince of demons falling like lightning (Luke 10:18). He is stoned, yet not hit (John 8:59; 10:31,39); he prays yet he hears prayer (Matthew 8:13; Mark 1:35). He weeps (John 11:35), yet he puts an end to weeping (Luke 7:13; 8:522; 23:28). He asks where Lazarus is (John 11:34) - he was man; yet he raises Lazarus (John 11:43-44) - he was God." (excerpt from ORATION 29, ON THE SON 20)
