Gospel text

(Mk 4,21-25):

Jesus also said to the crowd, «When the light comes, is it to be put under a tub or a bed? Surely it is put on a lampstand. Whatever is hidden will be disclosed, and whatever is kept secret will be brought to light. Listen then, if you have ears!».

And he also said to them, «Pay attention to what you hear. In the measure you give, so shall you receive and still more will be given to you. For to the one who produces something, more will be given, and from him who does not produce anything, even what he has will be taken away from him».

The Application

Jesus believes that we are called to be porters of light and be a light in this world. If we fail to realize this truth, darkness will domain in us, and not only the people around us will be in darkness, but we ourselves will be in darkness.

To avoid this danger, we are called to remain always connected with Christ, and search continuously the will of God. The more we are engaged in accomplishing his will, the better will be our light shining.

Action of the day: Be a light.

«When the light comes, is it to be put under a tub or a bed?»

Fr. Àngel CALDAS i Bosch
(Salt, Girona, Spain)

Today, Jesus explains to us the secret of his Kingdom. He is even somewhat ironical when telling us that the internal “energy” the Word of God has —his own Word—, that communicative force that spreads all over the world, is just like a light, and that this light cannot go «under a tub or a bed?» (Mk 4:21)

Can you imagine someone so stupid as to place a lit candle under the bed? We Christians with the lights off or with the lights on, but with a ban on lighting us up! This is what happens when we do not place all our love and knowledge at the service of our Faith. How anti-natural of us to selfishly retreat into ourselves, by limiting our life to the scope of our own personal interests! To live under the bed! Ridiculously and tragically still :absents of the spirit…

On the other hand, the Gospel is a saint outburst of passionate Love that wants to communicate, that needs “to say”, and that carries along a demand of personal growth, of interior maturity and service to others. «If you say: Enough!, you are dead», saint Augustine says. And saint Josemaria Escrivà also says: «O Lord: let me have temperance and restraint in everything… except in Love!».

«Listen then, if you have ears!». And He also said to them, «Pay attention to what you hear» (Mk 4:23-24). But, what does it mean “to hear”?; what are we to hear? This is the great question we have to ask ourselves. It is an attitude of sincerity towards God that demands to know what we really want to do. And to find it out we must hear: we must pay attention to the hints of God. We have to enter into a dialogue with him to put an end to the “mathematics of measure”: «In the measure you give, so shall you receive and still more will be given to you. For to the one who produces something, more will be given, and from him who does not produce anything, even what he has will be taken away from him» (Mk 4:24-25). God's accrued interests, are unpredictable and extraordinary, so as to stimulate our generosity.

In the Virgin Mary we will find the best example of how to answer God's call.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 4,21-25):

Abbé Àngel CALDAS i Bosch
(Salt, Girona, Espagne)

Gospel text

 (Mk 4,1-20):

Jesus began to teach by the lake, but such a large crowd gathered about him that He got into a boat and sat in it on the lake while the crowd stood on the shore. He taught them many things through stories or parables. In his teaching he said, «Listen! The sower went out to sow. As he sowed, some of the seed fell along a path and the birds came and ate it up. Some of the seed fell on rocky ground where it had little soil; it sprang up immediately because it had no depth; but when the sun rose and burned it, it withered because it had no roots. Other seed fell among thornbushes and the thorns grew and choked it, so it didn't produce any grain. But some seed fell on good soil, grew and increased and yielded grain; some produced thirty times as much, others sixty and others one hundred times as much». And Jesus added, «Listen then, if you have ears».

When the crowd went away, some who were around him with the Twelve asked about the parables. He answered them, «The mystery of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But for those outside, everything comes in parables, so that the more they see, they don't perceive; the more they hear, they don't understand; otherwise they would be converted and pardoned».

Jesus said to them, «Don't you understand this parable? How then will you understand any of the parables? What the sower is sowing is the word. Those along the path where the seed fell are people who hear the word, but as soon as they do, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. Other people receive the word like rocky ground. As soon as they hear the word, they accept it with joy, but they have no roots so it lasts only a little while. No sooner does trouble or persecution come because of the word, than they fall. Others receive the seed as among thorns. After they hear the word, they are caught up in the worries of this life, false hopes of riches and other desires. All these come in and choke the word so that finally it produces nothing. And there are others who receive the word as good soil. They hear the word, take it to heart and produce: some thirty, some sixty and some one hundred times as much».

The Application

Since in the parable Jesus Himself gives us the necessary explanation, I would like to propose to you some points for the meditation.

  • The giver is God and He continues to give us, without any partiality.
  • All have received the necessary grace to give fruit.
  • God himself has prepared us (our heart to receive the grace). God prepares us, not in our own way, but in His own way and we can know the way it functions. However, we need to cooperate with God.
  • By the grace of God and by our cooperation, we can produce fruit.

Second kind of meditation (imagination)

The Land is our body. The grace that God gives should be applied in the right place and right time. If we miss place the grace, then, even if we get the grace, because of our misplaced priorities of life, we may not be able to give the fruit.

Action of the day: Learn to cooperate with God.

«What the sower is sowing is the word»

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench
(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we hear our Lord teaching the “Sower's parable”. The example is highly topical. Our Lord is always “sowing”. Lots of people today also listen to Jesus through his Vicar —the Pope—, his ministers and... his faithful laymen and women: Christ has given a share in his priestly mission to all of us, who have been baptized. There is “hunger” for Jesus. Never ever before our Church has been so Catholic, men and women of all races and colors finding cover under its wings all the over the world. He send us all over the world (cf. Mk 16:15) and, despite the shadows of the panorama, this has become true in Jesus Christ's apostolic commandment.

The sea, the boat and the shore have been replaced by stadiums, screens and modern communication and transport means. However, Jesus today is no different than yesterday. Man and his urge to learn how to love have not changed either. Today, there are also some who, more directly, receive and understand the Word — by grace and free divine election, mysteriously... while, on the other hand, there are many who need more descriptive and deliberated explanations of the Revelation.

God, in any case, requests from both of us the fruits of sanctity. The Holy Spirit helps us but not without our personal cooperation. In the first place, diligence is needed. If we half react, that is, if we halt at the “border” of the road without fully going in, we shall be an easy prey for Satan.

Secondly, we need perseverance in prayer —dialogue—, to be able to get a deeper knowledge and love for Jesus Christ: «Saint without praying...? —I do not believe in this sanctity» (Saint Josemaria Escrivà).

Finally, the spirit of poverty and self-abnegation, will prevent our “suffocating” on the way. It better be clear that: «No one can serve two masters....» (Mt 6:24).

In the Virgin Mary we can find the best model of how to react to the God's call.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 4,1-20):

Abbé Antoni CAROL i Hostench

Abbé Josep GASSÓ i Lécera
(Ripollet, Barcelona, Espagne)

Scripture:

Mark 3:31-35

31 And his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside they sent to him and called him. 32 And a crowd was sitting about him; and they said to him, "Your mother and your brothers are outside, asking for you." 33 And he replied, "Who are my mother and my brothers?" 34 And looking around on those who sat about him, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does the will of God is my brother, and sister, and mother."

The Application

In all our human relationship we have certain attachment.  Consciously or unconsciously we build our relationship according to this attachment. It is from here that we get the source of our energy and thus become a deciding factor for our engagement. In today’s gospel, people have misunderstood this attachment of Jesus and humanly expected that Jesus will accord the priority to this human relationship more than His Father.

Today’s readings help us to understand the force which can motivate us in our daily life: the membership in the spiritual family of Jesus. In the first reading king David gives us an example of the expression of his love for the Lord. Once we love God, we become like little children before God and will be able to build a relationship with God and wih others in confidence and in truth. It is from this invisible force that we look forward towards each and every one of us as brothers and sisters, acknowledging their difference and accepting them as they are, with mutual respect and love. How can be practically possible to build this relationship without associating ourselves with the family of Jesus and without listening the Word of God?  Mary in her humanity has proved to us that we too in our daily life, can do the will of God and please God by cooperating with God in the establishment of the Divine Kingdom.

Action of the day: search the divine will for your day, today.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

The cross of Christ as victory,

by Augustine of Hippo, 430-543 A.D.

"[Mary] did the Father's will. It was this in her that the Lord magnified, not merely that her flesh gave birth to flesh... When he said, 'Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it' (Luke 11:28), he was in effect saying: 'My mother whom you have called blessed is blessed for the reason that she keeps the Word of God, not that the Word was made flesh in her and dwelt among us (John 1:14), but that she keeps the very Word of God through which she was made and which was made flesh in her." (excerpt from TRACTATE ON JOHN 10.3.2)

Gospel text

(Mk 3,22-30):

The teachers of the Law who had come from Jerusalem said, «He is possessed by Beelzebul: the chief of the demons helps him to drive out demons». Jesus called them to him and began teaching them by means of stories or parables, «How can Satan drive out Satan? If a nation is divided by civil war, that nation cannot stand. If a family divides itself into groups, that family will not survive. In the same way, if Satan has risen against himself and is divided, he will not stand; he is finished. No one can break into the house of the Strong one in order to plunder his goods, unless he first ties up the Strong one. Then indeed, he can plunder his house. Truly, I say to you, every sin will be forgiven humankind, even insults to God, however numerous. But whoever slanders the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven: he carries the guilt of his sin forever». This was their sin when they said, «He has an evil spirit in him».

The Application

The way we look at people may help us to understand the way we live. Thus, our vision on others become a mirror for us to have a good quality of self-knowledge. Today Jesus is confronted by the teachers of the law, who have the mission of explaining the divine mysteries revealed in the holy Scriptures. Learned, intelligent and well-informed failed to see the divine goodness in Jesus and refuse to associate the good works of Jesus to God. In their own arrogance, they reveal what is evil in them.

Jesus does agree with us that may not be able to understand all divine mysteries, and God will certainly bear with us. At the same time, in our own stupidity if we refuse see the goodness, and associate the divine goodness with evil, then there is a great danger of working against divine will, beyond any point of reconciliation.

God does put hope in the human wisdom, because we read in the first reading that the people of Israel were able to see the King in a young boy of 30 years, David.   We are called to put this human intelligence in work and find the divine truth in us and be saved.

Action of the day: learn to appreciate the goodness in others.

«But whoever slanders the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven»

Fr. Vicenç GUINOT i Gómez
(Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Spain)

Today, when we read about this event in the Gospel we are more than a little surprised when «the teachers of the Law who had come from Jerusalem» recognize Jesus' compassion for the oppressed and witness the divine miracles with which He blesses them, but then say, «He is possessed by Beelzebub», and «the chief of the demons helps him to drive out demons» (Mk 3:22). It is surprising how even intelligent people permit personal and religious animosity to blind them to the good in others. These teachers were in the presence of Him who personified Goodness. They must have sensed, as did others, the unassuming Heart of Jesus, and they will have understood that they stood before One who was the only true Innocent. Yet, because of their intransigence, they obstinately refused to acknowledge him. Those who claim to be knowledgeable in the things of God, were those who not only did not recognize him, but who also accused him of being satanic.

While others might have retaliated in an angry outburst, or turned away from them and their contemptuous accusation, our Lord does not, for He knows that He must try to convince them of his divinity for the sake of their souls. As John Paul II has asserted, our Lord «is an insuperable testimony of patient loving and humble gentleness». His unlimited condescension brings Him to try to open their closed hearts by reasoning with them by parables, but to no avail. Finally, Jesus in the divine but stern authority of the Godhead warns them that their hard-heartedness is rebellion against the Holy Spirit, and that it will never be forgiven (cf. Mk 3:29). That rebellion remains unforgiven, not because God does not want to forgive, but because, to be forgiven, one must first recognize one's sin, which the rebellious will not do.

The Master knows that His followers also experience that same obstinacy, even when they are acting in good faith for the benefit of unbelievers. All of us will, at times, face the same kind of difficulties and rejection as Jesus did. When we do, let us remember Saint Terese of Jesus when she was leading her sisters closer to holiness.

Let us not, therefore, be surprised if we find in our path these contradictions. They will just be the sign we are following the right way of life. Let us then pray for these people and ask our Lord to give us the necessary patience.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 3,22-30):

Abbé Vicenç GUINOT i Gómez

Today with the Universal Church, we will celebrate the Sunday of the Word, a Sunday entirely dedicated to the Word of God. Catechumens who ask for faith and baptism are given the Bible, so that they may discover God, recognize the history of salvation and have faith. St. John said, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God?"  Little boy Samuel learned to pray, "Speak, Lord, your servant is listening." " (1Sam 3, 9).  "Say just one word and my servant will be healed. " (Mt 8:8). The Word of God not only gives us life individually, but also gathers us around it and makes us one people. In our diversity we are unified as God's people.

We give thanks to the Lord for his wonders, especially for the gift of faith. It is baptism that has opened to us the door of faith, the source of our hope. The Church provides us with the necessary tools to nourish our faith. First of all, the Word of God found in the Sacred Scriptures. We are invited to read, reread and contemplate them.  By listing the Sacred Scriptures, we discover divine revelation, in a perfect way in Jesus Christ, especially in his Word and in his deeds, more intensely in the PERSON. It is Jesus Himself who helps us to discover the Word of God. Luke in his Gospel makes it clear to us, "Then he opened their understanding to the understanding of the WRITINGS" (Lk 24:45). The disciples of Emmaus will leave in haste that very night for Jerusalem and testify to the other disciples. The Word transforms the person, and they will no longer be the same.

The second tool is salvation history and tradition, including the teachings of the universal Church. Divine intervention is faithfully told in history and tradition helps us to understand them and the teachings give us the system and explanations necessary to apply them. It is here that we learn that the joys and sorrows of Israel are ours.

In the New Testament call, we participate in the Apostles' call and through our baptism we respond positively to it. We can no longer separate ourselves from this history, for today it makes us live and we make it live, and may the new generation discover the divine works that will guide them to eternity, as they guide us today.

For this, God needs us. Each one of us is invited to follow Jesus faithfully and to make this faith live fully. This fidelity obliges us to surrender ourselves to the divine will, and to let go of certain habits even if they are good and make others (new way of living) as our own.  We become aware that we are chosen, consecrated and sent so that the Kingdom of God may come to the people.

Like Jesus, we must announce this conversion, which is the first step towards salvation. The conversion that Jesus announced was not simply changing our lives, or losing it, but rather finding the life lost, going home, our own home. In this way we can re-appropriate the identity we have lost because of our sins. Thus, we will become the true light of the world and salt of the earth, as Jesus has asked to us to be. May the Lord bless us and brings to its completion, what He has initiated in us.

Amen.

Amen.
