Gospel text

(Lk 4,14-22):

Jesus acted with the power of the Spirit, and on his return to Galilee the news about him spread throughout all that territory. He began teaching in the synagogues of the Jews and everyone praised him.

When Jesus came to Nazareth where he had been brought up, he entered the synagogue on the sabbath as he usually did. He stood up to read and they handed him the book of the prophet Isaiah. Jesus then unrolled the scroll and found the place where it is written: «The Spirit of the Lord is upon me. He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and new sight to the blind; to free the oppressed and announce the Lord's year of mercy».

Jesus then rolled up the scroll, gave it to the attendant and sat down, while the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he said to them, «Today these prophetic words come true even as you listen». All agreed with him and were lost in wonder, while he kept on speaking of the grace of God.

The Application

Our Christian life is a witnessing life, a life which represent God and His love for us. God needs us, so that others may understand this divine love, through human encounters. God acts humanly through you and me. This is the only way to love God and reach God to the humanity.

The gospel says, ‘’as he usually did’. This is the model that Jesus leaves behind for our imitation. Being with God, made Him to be with people. To be with people in listening the Word of God and praying. Our life can never be an isolated salvific path, but a pilgrimage with others.

The second aspect is, ‘the Spirit of the Lord’. It is important to each and every Christian that we too be aware that this Holy Spirit that we have received in our baptism is active and alive in us. We should never be content in doing good deeds, rather search always, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the divine will and accomplish it. Jesus is telling us that He has come to accomplish the will of the Father.

The most important aspect of our Christian living is, to glorify God and through our words and deeds, make the whole world to glorify God. It is here, that we become the true witness of God’s love. Once our life is filled with love and mercy, people will certainly come to us and we have an obligation of leading this people to Jesus, just like Jesus who leads us to the Father.

Action of the day: be filled with love and mercy.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

Christ brings hope of release from spiritual bondage,

by Eusebius of Caesarea, 260/263-340 AD

"'The Spirit of the Lord is on me because he has anointed me' (Luke 4:18 and Isaiah 61:1). Clearly this happened to those who thought that the Christ of God was neither a mere man nor an unfleshed and unembodied Word who did not take on a mortal nature. Instead they say he is both God and human, God in that he is the only-begotten God who was in the bosom of the Father, and man... from the seed of David according to the flesh (Luke 1:32). Thus, God the Word, who through the prophecy has been called Lord, speaks out this prophecy that is preeminent among other promises: 'I am the Lord, and in the right time I will draw them together'...

"Taking the chrism in the Holy Spirit, he, chosen from among all, appears as the only-begotten Christ of God. And the verse 'he has sent me to proclaim good news to the poor' (Luke 4:18), he fulfilled in that time when he 'was preaching the kingdom of heaven' and explaining the beatitudes to the disciples by saying, 'Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God' (Matthew 5:3)... And for those nations then imprisoned in their souls by the invisible and spiritual powers he preached release to his newly encouraged disciples... Therefore, he preached release to the prisoners and to those suffering from blindness who were those enslaved by the error of polytheism, and he creates a year that is acceptable, through which he made all time his own year. And from the passing years of humanity he provides days of created light for those close to him. He never kept hidden the age that is to come after the perfecting of the present. For that age will be a time much on the Lord's mind, being an age and day of requiting. For he will grant a change of fortune or a year of favor to those struggling in the present life." (excerpt from COMMENTARY ON ISAIAH 2.51.5)

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 4,14-22):

Abbé Antoni CAROL i Hostench

Gospel text

(Mk 6,45-52):

After the five thousand men were satiated, Jesus obliged his disciples to get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, towards Bethsaida, while he himself sent the crowd away. And having sent the people off, he went by himself to the hillside to pray. When evening came, the boat was far out on the lake while he was alone on the land.

Jesus saw his disciples straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, and before daybreak he came to them walking on the lake; and he was going to pass them by. When they saw him walking on the lake, they thought it was a ghost and cried out; for they all saw him and were terrified. But at once he called to them, «Courage! It's me; don't be afraid». Then Jesus got into the boat with them and the wind died down. They were completely astonished, for they had not really grasped the fact of the loaves; their minds were dull.

The Application

The multiplication of the bread is a simple sign of divine presence in our life and by this event the disciples were invited to discover in Jesus, the messianic presence of God, the Saviour of the world. With Jesus and in His presence the humanity will find the prefect consolation and support.

To listen and profit from this, we should be connected to the truth, liberated from the visible realities and emotions, both joyful and painful. The disciples were happy to live in this emotional life (joyful), without knowing the greater TRUTH of divine presence. Thus Jesus will propose to them another experience, now terrifying.

This awareness of the divine truth is possible only by two manners. The first is the prayer and the contemplation, nourished by inner serenity and patience. The second is love expressed in charity (service). This is exactly what we find in today’s gospel. United with God in contemplation and filled with love for God in our service to the humanity, is the perfect mixture, to have an eternal peace and joy, in our daily life. It is here we will hear the tendering voice of God, in silence “«Courage! It's me; don't be afraid». Which in turn make us capable of welcoming Jesus in to our troubled boat (heart) and by His presence we will find strength to confront any moments of life.

Action of the day: Have courage, the Lord is with you.

«And having sent the people off, he went by himself to the hillside to pray»

Fr. Melcior QUEROL i Solà
(Ribes de Freser, Girona

Today, we see how Jesus, after dismissing the apostles and the crowd, goes off by himself to pray. His whole life has been a constant dialogue with the Father, and yet, he chooses to go to the hillside to pray. And what about us? How do we pray? More often than not the frantic pace of our worldly life becomes a serious obstacle for our spiritual life. And we forget that it is as equally important to “feed” our soul, as it is to feed our body. However, God and our relationship with Him does not stand high in our priorities. Under such circumstances it is difficult to truly pray. Nor is it possible to maintain a prayerful spirit when we beg for help only in times of trouble.

Finding room and time for prayer requires a yearning within us to meet God with the unshakable conviction that nobody and nothing can replace him. Without this longing to communicate with God, our prayer easily drifts into a soliloquy, a tool we use just to try to solve nagging problems. We are also easily distracted during prayer, our hearts and minds invaded by all kind of thoughts and feelings. Praying is not like chatting but rather a simple elated encounter with Love. It is our ongoing relationship with God: the silent communication between me, the poor one who needs everything, and “You”, the transcendent provider of all. The constant reward of true prayer lies in our sure knowledge that our Creator loves us.

Prayer and Christian life are inseparable. Origenes, the ancient Church Father reminds us that: «Only he who joins prayer to deeds and deeds to prayer, prays unceasingly. Only in this way can we understand what it means to pray constantly». We must indeed pray without stop to sanctify our deeds and join them to our prayer. The continuous dialogue Jesus offers us in prayer not only soothes our spirit but bring us to realize that prayer is the breath of God’s love. If we do not breathe we die; if we do not pray, we die spiritually.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 6,45-52):

Gospel text

(Mk 6, 34-44):

As Jesus went ashore he saw a large crowd, and he had compassion on them for they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began a long teaching session with them. It was now getting late, so his disciples came to him and said, «This is a lonely place and it is now late. You should send the people away and let them go to the farms and villages around here to buy themselves something to eat». Jesus replied, «You yourselves give them something to eat». They answered, «If we are to give them food, we must go and buy two hundred silver coins' worth of bread». But Jesus said, «You have some loaves: how many? Go and see». The disciples found out and said, «There are five loaves and two fish».

Then he told them to have the people sit down together in groups on the green grass. This they did in groups of hundreds and fifties. And Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish and, raising his eyes to heaven, he pronounced a blessing, broke the loaves and handed them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them. They all ate and everyone had enough. The disciples gathered up what was left and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces of bread and fish. Five thousand men had eaten there.

«They were like sheep without a shepherd»

Fr. Xavier SOBREVÍA i Vidal
(Castelldefels, Spain)

Today, Jesus shows Himself to be sensitive to the needs of people who are in search of Him. He just cannot remain indifferent to the needs of those he meets on the way. He feels compassion when He sees the great crowd that has been following Him «like sheep without a shepherd» (Mk 6:34). The Master leaves His immediate plans aside and starts preaching. How many times have we allowed urgency or impatience manage our behavior? How many times have we not wanted to change our plans in order to help with immediate and unforeseen needs? Jesus gives us an example of flexibility, of the ability to modify plans and be available for the people who follow Him.

Time goes by quickly. When you love, it is easy for time to go by very quickly. And Jesus, who loves much, preaches at length. It gets late, the disciples remind the Master so. What worries them is how the crowd is going to feed itself. Then Jesus makes an implausible proposal: «You yourselves give them something to eat» (Mk 6:37). He is not only worried about spiritual bread but also about bodily food. The disciples find it difficult, very difficult. And it is true!: the cost would be «two hundred silver coins' worth of bread» (Mk 6:37). They see the material difficulties, but their eyes do not still recognize that He who speaks to them is almighty; they need more faith.

Jesus does not make them stand in line, he organizes them in groups. They rest and share together as a community. He asked the disciples for the food they had: only five loaves and two fish. Jesus takes them, invokes God's blessing and distributes them. Such a small amount of food will feed thousands of people and twelve baskets will exceed. This miracle introduces the spiritual bread of the Eucharist. The Bread of life that spreads freely to all the people of the Earth in order to give life and eternal life.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mc 6, 34-44):

Abbé Xavier SOBREVÍA i Vidal
(Castelldefels, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mt 4,12-17.23-25):

When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. He left Nazareth and went to settle down in Capernaum, a town by the lake of Galilee, at the border of Zebulun and Naphtali. In this way the word of the prophet Isaiah was fulfilled: «Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali crossed by the Road of the Sea, and you who live by the Jordan, Galilee, land of pagans, listen: The people who lived in darkness have seen a great light; on those who live in the land of the shadow of death, a light has shone».

From that time on Jesus began to proclaim his message, «Change your ways: the kingdom of heaven is near». Jesus went around all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom, and curing all kinds of sickness and disease among the people. The news about him spread through the whole of Syria, and the people brought all their sick to him, and all those who suffered: the possessed, the deranged, the paralyzed, and he healed them all. Large crowds followed him from Galilee and the Ten Cities, from Jerusalem, Judea, and from across the Jordan.

«The kingdom of heaven is near»

Fr. Jordi CASTELLET i Sala
(Sant Hipòlit de Voltregà, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we begin again, so to speak. «The people who lived in darkness have seen a great light; on those who live in the land of the shadow of death, a light has shone» (Mt 4:16), Isaiah, quoted in the gospel —which takes us back to Christmas, tells us. We start again, we get another opportunity. Our time is new, the occasion asks for it, let's humbly let the Father work in our lives.

Today we start the time that God has given us yet again, for us to sanctify, so that we can get close to Him, so that we can turn our lives into service to others. Christmas is coming to an end, next Sunday with the Baptism of the Lord, and with it the new year starts, ordinary time —as we say in Christian liturgy— to live in extenso the mystery of Christmas. The Incarnation of the Word has visited us in these days and has sown his Grace in our hearts in an infallible way, a grace which takes us back to the Kingdom of Heaven, the kingdom of God that Christ has come to open up to us with His deeds and commitment from the Heart of our humanity.

Because of that, Saint Leo the Great said that «the providence and the mercy of God, who had already thought of helping a world which was collapsing at the time, determined the salvation of all peoples through Christ».

This is the right time. We cannot think that God worked more in the past than now, that it was easier to believe in Jesus —physically, I mean— than now that we do not see Him. The sacraments of the Church and the prayer of the community grant us pardon and peace and an opportunity to participate, once again, in the works of God in the world, through our work, study, friends, family, entertainment or the daily life with our brothers. May the Lord, source of every gift and every good, make it possible for us!

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 4,12-17.23-25):

Abbé Jordi CASTELLET i Sala

Today we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany, a feast that reveals to the world the divine presence, divine presence in the humanity, visible and palpable, so that the world may worship Him in truth and in spirit. The Incarnation was not a gift to a single community, but a precious gift to humanity. In the Incarnation God gives Himself, He gives Himself in a little child, so that man, whatever his state of life, may associate himself with His birth and appropriate the joy offered by this divine intervention.  God wanted to make us happy by an act of liberation, a Lamb who will immolate himself by shedding his blood. By this act, he will take away the sin of the world, illuminating the hearts of men with his own Light. We are called to hold this light and be the light of the world.

The feast of the Epiphany is a feast of Light, which will remove all kinds of darkness. This feast helps us to purify our thoughts conditioned by the world and to liberate us from our ignorance about this God who loves us. A child is born to us, a Saviour is given to us.  As we heard in the first reading, "All the people of Sheba shall come, bringing gold and incense; they shall declare the deeds of the Lord. "We need others, sometime strangers, even an enemy  that we may recognize the wonders done by our Lord. Before the world saw this child, the Magi took the road, each in his own way, his own pilgrimage, towards Jerusalem, the holy city, of course, accompanied by the star in the sky. The prophets will guide them towards the good direction, towards Bethlehem.

God reveals to us through this event His mystery, a great mystery of salvation. From now on, we all become one people, the people of God. There will be no more division, neither race, nor people, nor worship, nor culture. We are one body, sharing the same promise and the same inheritance, moving forward together, in prayer, in contemplation of the Word of God, putting this Word into action, at the service of the people, so that the world may be saved.

The road is long, tiring and sometimes fraught with obstacles. There are moments when everything seems to tip over, nothing works as it should. It is then that the starlight disappears and doubt wins us over. Displaced, we no longer know where we are and in which direction to go. In these moments let us trust in God and let us get back on our feet, our faith will guide us. God will find a solution for us, we must remain faithful and sincere, without losing hope.  If we remain faithful, God will point us in the right direction and we will see the star again, with it our happiness and the light of life.

The Magi have seen, as it was foretold. They were happy and joyful, to kneel down before this Holy Child and adore Him. Among men, they were the first who adored this child, as it should be, recognizing already from his birth the Lamb who is going to be slain. God will make us discover His mysteries, in due time.

The story of this gospel ends with a warning: "Do not return to Herod. Our fidelity demands radical obedience to the divine will, total trust in the project that God proposes to us, open at all times to the new or to the unknown or unforeseen adventure.  The star that led the Magi will also lead us to the Crib and will guide us towards the true search for God, a God who dwells in the midst of our daily lives. Amen.

Gospel text

(Jn 1,35-42):

As John was standing with two of his disciples, Jesus walked by, and John looked at him and said, «There is the Lamb of God». On hearing this, the two disciples followed Jesus. He turned and saw them following, and He said to them, «What are you looking for?». They answered, «Rabbi (which means Master), where are you staying?». Jesus said, «Come and see». So they went and saw where he stayed and spent the rest of that day with him. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard what John had said and followed Jesus. Early the next morning he found his brother Simon and said to him, «We have found the Messiah» (which means the Christ), and he brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, «You are Simon, son of John, but you shall be called Cephas» (which means Rock).

The Application

Today I invite you all to meditate on few words from today’s gospel which may help us to put this gospel message in practice today.

Look: Divine look come with lots of compassion and love. This look consoles and comforts. It’s important that we evaluate the way we look at people. Does our look resembles that of Christ?

Searching for: what are we looking for in our daily life? What we search? Inner peace and joy, or divine will? Our search is for our personal good, or to accomplish the divine desires?

Comes and see: God invites us, each and every one of us personally to ‘come and see’ by ourselves. Its an invitation for a personal experience. God wishes that we remain close to him, taste and see, how He is gentle and kind.

Mission: Peter did receive a personal mission. We too have received a mission in our baptism, like to keep alive the light of hope and resurrection.

Action of the day: Be a faithful disciple of the Lord.

«‘Rabbi, where are you staying?’. Jesus said, ‘Come and see’»

Today, the Gospel reminds us of the vocational circumstances of Jesus' first disciples. To get ready for the advent of the Messiah, John and his friend Andrew had listened to, and followed for a while, John the Baptist. One day, John the Baptist, points out to Jesus, by calling him the Lamb of God. On hearing this, John and Andrew understand that He is the long-waited Messiah! And, by leaving the Baptist, they set to follow Jesus.

Jesus hears them behind. He turns and sees them following. Jesus and those unassuming men exchange glances. They remain captivated. Jesus' gaze turns their hearts over and they feel the need to stay on with him: «Where are you staying?» (Jn 1:38), they ask him. «Come and see» (Jn 1:39), answers Jesus. He invites them to remain, to see, to meditate.

They go, and they contemplate Him while listening to Him. And they spend the evening and the night with Him. It is a time of closeness and confidences. A time of love sharing. They remain with Him until the following morning. When the Sun rises over the world.

Stirred up with the flame of that «sunrise which shines upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death...» (cf. Lk 1:78-79), they set forth to irradiate it. Exalted, they feel the urge to communicate what they have seen and lived to the first ones they may meet: «We have found the Messiah!» (Jn 1:41). Many saints have also done it similarly. St. Frances, love wounded, went about streets and squares, hamlets and woods, shouting: «Love is not loved!».

In our Christian life, the essential part is to allow Jesus to gaze into us, to go and see where he stays, to stay with him and to share. And, afterwards, to announce it. This is the way and procedure followed by the disciples and saints.
It is our way.
