Abbé Joaquim MONRÓS i Guitart
(Tarragona, Espagne)

Amen

Gospel text

(Mt 9,14-15):

The disciples of John came to Jesus with the question, «How is it that we and the Pharisees fast on many occasions, but not your disciples?». Jesus answered them, «How can you expect the wedding guests to mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? Time will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, then they will fast».

The Application

Very often the contemporaries of Jesus misunderstood him as a revolutionary and even the disciples of John Baptist didn’t understand him. Jesus is not against the fasting. He says, “time will come” and the time has come for us. Many of us are not close to Him and we know him very much intellectually not personally.

It is important that we understand the kind of fasting that the Lord desires from us. Fasting from the hurting words or abusive languages or rumour mongering, fasting from arrogance and pride, fasting from selfish and egocentric, etc. These kinds of fasting certainly will bring us closer to God, and anything we do which leads us closer to God, will certainly be something pleasing to God.  Let us not reduce the fasting to simple privation of aliments. For an example, not eating meat in these days may be very expensive and spending lot of money in buying fish  may be ridiculous. When fish is considered as a luxury and replacing this for meat is quite counterproductive. Jesus is asking us, to check whether the bridegroom is there with us or not? He is asking us to choose the right fasting and use this Lenten time as an wonderful opportunity to get closer to God.

«Time will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, then they will fast»

Fr. Xavier PAGÉS i Castañer
(Barcelona, Spain)

Today the first Friday of Lent, having experienced the fasting and abstinence of Ash Wednesday, we have attempted to offer our fasting and the prayer of the Holy Rosary, for the Peace, that our World needs so badly. We are willing to take care of this Lenten exercise, our Church, Mother and Teacher, is asking us to abide by, and to remember it was the same Lord who said: «Time will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, then they will fast» (Mt 9:15). We have the desire to experience it, not just as the fulfillment of an obligation which is mandatory for us, but —most of all— as the possibility to find the spirit which will let us live this Lenten practice while helping us in our spiritual improvement.

By seeking this deep feeling, we can ask ourselves: which is the true fasting? Already, prophet Isaiah, in today's first reading, tells us which is the fasting God appreciates: «Sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard» (Is 58:7-8). God likes and expects from us whatever is taking us towards a true love for all our brothers.

Every year, the Holy Father John Paul II wrote us a message for Lent. One of these messages, under the motto «There is more happiness in giving than there is in receiving» (Acts 20:35); helped us to discover the very same charitable dimension of our fasting, which, from the bottom of our heart, allows us to prepare for Easter Time, in an effort to identify ourselves, more and more, with Christ's love which took him to die in the Cross for us. In short, «what every Christian ought to do all the time, he ought to do it now more carefully and more devotedly» (Saint Leo the Great, pope).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 9,14-15):

Abbé Xavier PAGÉS i Castañer
(Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Lk 9,22-25):

Jesus said, «The Son of Man must suffer many things. He will be rejected by the elders and chief priests and teachers of the Law, and put to death. Then after three days he will be raised to life». Jesus also said to all the people, «If you wish to be a follower of mine, deny yourself and take up your cross each day, and follow me. For if you choose to save your life, you will lose it, and if you choose to lose your life for my sake, you will save it. What does it profit you to gain the whole world while you destroy or damage yourself?».

The Application

These days we will be meditating a lot about the Cross of the Lord and this Cross is salvific in nature.  Every cross of life can save us, if we assume them as a means or opportunities given to us to grow closer to God. The human experience does help us to understand that it is in our difficult moment of life that we call God, not in our joyful moments of life. God is always willing to respond to us, because He is ready to accept this cross, so that we may be saved.

Following Jesus and making Him as our way, is a joyful ride of life. The very presence of God gives us the energy to face all our adversaries with courage and certitude, including ordinary sin and its attractions. The wisdom will teach us to choose the master than what he can offer to us. Thus we will have everything he can offer to us. The good discernment will help us to choose God, the life and refuse evil, the death.

The first sept of this discernment is to identify our crosses and assume them daily and follow Jesus, who continues to carry our crosses with us. The second thing to do today is, to renounce all the unhealthy identities and fears that we hold on to us, as a mask to protect ourselves. The more we let go these false identities, the faster we will be find-out our real identity: children of God and beloved of God. It’s here we reborn in Christ and become new creation. Have a wonderful day.

«If you wish to be a follower of mine, deny yourself and take up your cross each day, and follow me»

Fr. Josep Mª MASSANA i Mola OFM
(Barcelona, Spain)

Today is the first Thursday of Lent. The ashes our Church laid yesterday on our forehead are still fresh; and are meant to remind us of a forty days journey. In the Gospel, Jesus, shows us two routes: the way of the cross he must undergo, and our own way to follow him.

His path is the Way of the Cross and that of death, but also that of His Glory: «The Son of Man must suffer many things (...), and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. » (Lk 9:22). The route we must take is, essentially, the same one Jesus took, and He shows us how to follow it: «If any man would come after Me...» (Lk 9:23).

Hugging his Cross, Jesus complied with the Will of His Father; as for us, carrying ours on our shoulders, we follow him in his Way of the Cross.

The path of Jesus is summarized in three words: suffering, dying, raising from the dead. Three aspects constitute our own footpath too (two attitudes and the essence of our Christian vocation): Self-Denial, taking up our cross every day of our life and following Jesus.

If we do not deny ourselves and do not take up our cross, we are only seeking to affirm and be ourselves; we want «to save our life», as Jesus says. Yet, by wanting to save it, we will lose it. On the other hand, those who, because of Jesus, will not strive to avoid their suffering and the cross, will save their lives. It is the resulting paradox of our following Jesus: «For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?» (Lk 9:25).

Our Lord's words, closing today's Gospel, tremendously shook Saint Ignatius and sparked off his conversion: «What would happen if I would do just as saint Francis and saint Dominic did?». If only, in this Lent, the same words would help us to reach our conversion, too...!

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 9,22-25):

Abbé Josep Mª MASSANA i Mola OFM
(Barcelona, Espagne)

Ash wednesday begins today and once again we get another opportunity of 40 days to pary and act, as the children of the loving and merciful God, to feel in the deepest part of our being the very divine presence which animates the whole world, and to engage ourselves to make the life of our brothers and sisters easy by living our personal life in a meaningful and witnessing life. Just like another day, these days we will recall the three pillars of the Lenten season: prayer, fasting and charity. This is certainly not to mourn or to be sad, or called to suffer and undertake activities which may give us pain. These are the joyful moments of Christian life, moments of Faith in celebration.

Without ignoring the elements of prayer, fasting and charity, I would love to invite you all to orient our life by fully associating it, with the very life of Jesus, because we are preparing directly to celebrate meaningfully, the Pascal event, the death and the resurrection of the Lord. Thus, the more we are configured in Christ, the more we become capable of accomplishing the divine will, just like Jesus. By consequence, our Christian life will certainly find the meaning of ‘BEING’ and continuously being aware of the pilgrim nature, that is to say ‘already and not yet’.  We are already in Christ by the very nature of our baptism and the fullness is to be achieved gracefully, slowly and steadily. The perseverance and faithfulness in all our daily engagements, is the essential and first important aspect of this season.

Let’s learn to pray, pray with heart not with words. It is important not only to pray, but to verify the quality of our daily prayers. Do I really pray, or simply recite repetitively the prayers presented to me, including the Lord’s Prayer. Do I reduce my prayer as simple supplication and praising? As Christian, every moment of life, every act of love, every engagement of human development, etc., can be called as prayer, with the condition that these are animated by the divine will and we are aware of the our personal participation in the accomplishment of the Kingdom of God. Prayer can be simply an awareness of His presence and feel what He feels for us. Prayer is the best means available for us to feel the presence of the Lord and be nourished by the very presence. It is here that we reborn again and again in the Lord. It is here we discover the ‘new creation’ that Jesus desires for us. It is here we are called and sent by the Lord to protect the creation, evidently protection of every single individual we meet daily.

The best sign of our positive engagement is visible when we engage in a concrete way, particularly in the sacrament of reconciliation. Before entering into this beautiful sacrament, there is a need to feel and be aware of the merciful love of the Lord, who is ready to forgive, the Abel in us, the David in us, the Saul and Peter in us, etc. By taking the same initiative of these people, who have cherished the divine forgiveness, we too in our smallness take the direction towards the reconciliation that pushes us to get reconciled with our brothers and sisters and try to destroy the sin, first in us and then to destroy it in the world. By generously forgiving others, praying for our enemies, we engage directly to fight against the evil power, which is destroying the peace that the Lord has established for us, in us and in our society. Sin is destroying the beautiful humanity in us and remain as an eternal huddle to become divine in our humanity.

Since this time is reserved to ‘home coming’ of the prodigal son, it is important that we anticipate the JOY of the Father. In this anticipation, we joyfully destroy anything which separates us from the Father and cultivate all that help us to build the bridge which will lead us to the Father.

The step by step method can be seen in the story of prodigal son:

  • Self-awareness of our status, not only our sins and smallness but also our talents and limits.
  • Engage positively and concretely. I will get up, here and now.
  • Take courage and stand up with the certitude of divine forgiveness. God will accept me, as I am.
  • March towards the Father and experience by yourself that He has already in action towards you and He has already forgiven you.
  • Surrender yourself and all your talents. Tell him how much you have used these talents and given glory to God.
  • The most important is, allow God to raise you up and accept the honour that the Lord wishes to accord to you. Though you may feel small, but before God, you are his loving son/daughter. You were dead and alive. Enjoy the feasting and don’t remain outside, as a rebel. Have a wonderful Lenten celebration.

Do pray for me and I assure you my prayers. Have a meaningful Lent and God bless you all.

Fr.Terry,cmf.

Neutrality and living a life without prejudice is almost impossible. However, every word that comes from the mouth of the person, does reveal to us his own interiority.  Man has lost the sense of speech that reveals his strength, his vitality, his spirit and his project, so to the most intimate being of man. The speech detects, indeed, the bottom of the heart and betrays it even where one claims to hide. You have to listen to the other, without prejudice and understand the other. Many at time, we don’t listen to the other person. That is why I say it and I repeat it today, that we see everything we have already seen and we hear everything we have heard.

This is how we fall into a routine life, taking the same path every day, and behaving in a repetitive way. If all goes well, as it should, and if our acts are filled with love and charity, for us and for others, this way of life will be good and produce fruits of multicolour, because in each individual, there is a particularity and we will find unity in our diversity. All of us will be like the good trees that produce the good fruits.

Man in his weakness and limit, would like to imitate others, men and women recognized in society or in the Church, without recognizing the goods he already has in his nature and all that he is capable of to bring in society. We are all rich because we are able to bring something to the society. We are all poor because we need others. Jesus invites us to know each other. Self-knowledge is the essential to know others, who surround us. If we are not able to know ourselves, how can we recognize others, let alone the God who loves us?

The gospel of the day reminds us that we are the children of God, the good trees that must give the good fruits. Jesus tells us that He is our Master. The disciples of a good teacher must represent this master and must always learn to live according to the teaching received from their master. Since Jesus is our Master, since His teaching is a commandment of love, we Christians are called to be visible signs of divine love. It is in this divine love where Jesus teaches us to know ourselves, to know our humanity which is incarnate in its divinity. This is how we become the disciples of the Lord and at the same time the teachers who transmit all that we have learned from the Lord.

If the Lord has asked us to be the light and the salt of the earth, because He believes we have the ability to be.  Wednesday will be already the Ash-Wednesday. Let’s purify our conscience and get on the right path. May the Lord be our Shepherd and may we be faithful sheep.

Gospel text

(Mk 10,13-16):

People were bringing their little children to Jesus to have him touch them, and the disciples rebuked them for this. When Jesus noticed it, He was very angry and said, «Let the children come to me and don't stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it». Then He took the children in his arms and laying his hands on them, blessed them.

The Application

The children have this behavioural aptitude of searching the truth and experience it by themselves. It is here we expect the importance of the role the parents who guide them, particularly in the discernment process, so that their children may choose what is best. If parents fail them, particularly in their discernment process, there is a great danger of misinformed and misguided persons in the society.

Today Jesus is inviting each and every of us to become like the children who search for the truth and at the same time assume our responsibility of leading the children towards the author of the truth. Many of us are rightly informed and acquired sufficient knowledge and are not rightly guided to have a good discernment.

Jesus is asking us not only to become like these children, but also act like a responsible adults, who lead these children towards the Truth, God. Since God has created us in His image, we are already inculcated naturally in us these qualities and we have to believe this. The more we are close to God, the more we are close to the truth. And the knowledge of truth about ourselves, and our positive engagement towards accomplishing the divine will, will certainly make us the real children of God, the blessed ones of the Lord.

«Let the children come to me»

Fr. Josep Lluís SOCÍAS i Bruguera
(Badalona, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, children are news. More than ever before, children have a lot to say, even the word “infant” means “he who does not speak”. We can better appreciate that in electronic devices: they know how to switch them on and off, how to use them properly and, even how to teach us, adults, to correctly use them. A noted reporter used to say that, «even if infants do not speak it does not mean they do not think».

In this fragment of Mark's Gospel we find several considerations: «People were bringing their little children to Jesus to have him touch them, and the disciples rebuked them for this» (Mk 10:13). But the Lord, who did not mind relating to everybody, did connect with infants even more so. This is why, «when Jesus noticed it, He was very angry and said, ‘Let the children come to me and don't stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these’» (Mk 10:14).

Charity must follow priorities: it begins with the most needy. And, if everybody has the right to approach Jesus, infants are the first ones to enjoy this privilege: «Let the children come to me and don't stop them» (Mk 10:14).

We should realize, however, that when helping the more needy, we happen to be the first ones to benefit of it. This is why the Master warns us: «Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it» (Mk 10:15). And, in correspondence to the simplicity and openness of those children «He took them in his arms and laying his hands on them, blessed them» (Mk 10:16).

We must learn the art of receiving the Kingdom of God. He who is like a child can easily perceive that everything is a gift, a grace. From our smallness we should be open to receive. And, “to receive” God's favour, we must listen and contemplate with “receptive silence”. After St. Ignatius of Antioch, to the Ephesians « It is better for a man to be silent and be [a Christian], than to talk and not to be one. (...) He who possesses the word of Jesus, is truly able to hear even His very silence, that he may be perfect, and may both act as he speaks, and be recognized by his silence».
