Gospel text

(Mt 5,43-48):

Jesus said to his disciples, «You have heard that it was said: ‘Love your neighbor and do not do good to your enemy’. But this I tell you: Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in Heaven. For he makes his sun rise on both the wicked and the good, and he gives rain to both the just and the unjust. If you love those who love you, what is special about that? Do not even tax collectors do as much? And if you are friendly only with your friends, what is so exceptional about that? Do not even the pagans do as much? For your part you shall be righteous and perfect in the way your heavenly Father is righteous and perfect».

The Application

The gospel exigence sometime overtake us and we are not able to live up to its height. Though loving all without any condition remains a difficult affaire to accomplish, forgiving and praying for our enemies remain far away from our mere thinking and reasoning.  Even if, we achieve to this extent, to be perfect just like the heavenly Father………mmm, little too much even to our imagination!

Keeping these ideas set aside, if we learn to look the way God looks at us and if we know exactly what we are and what we are capable, then all that we have said before will fall into pieces, because, we are children of God. If we associate all above said as a possibility to God, then it is possible even for us. We are asked to think and act divinely, in our human way.

Since we are chosen, consecrated and send, by the very day of our baptism, living divinely is not an option proposed, rather the only way  we are supposed to live, according our own dignity, in our humanity, as expected by the Lord through our baptism.

If it is not the case for you, then you are not looking at Jesus, as the model of life, you are not keeping his commandment of love as the rule of life, and sadly you are not living your life. Rather, you are living the life proposed by others, imitating some other human being, without knowing yourself, your identity as the child of God and the very finality of union with the Father.

«Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you»

Fr. Joan COSTA i Bou
(Barcelona, Spain)

Today's Gospel exhorts us to the most perfect love. Love is wanting to do good to others, and here lies our personal fulfillment. We do not love for our own sake, but for the sake of doing good to our neighbor, and on doing it to improve as persons. The II Vatican Council said, «human beings cannot reach their prime but by sincerely giving themselves to others». Sainte Therese of the Infant Jesus said, ‘This is making an holocaust of our life’. Love is a human vocation. Our whole behavior, to be truly human, has to be the expression of the reality of our being while fulfilling our vocation for love. As John Paul II has written, «a man, cannot live without love. He becomes incomprehensible. His life does not make sense if love is not revealed to him, if he does not find love, if he does not experience love and makes it his, if he does not intensely participate in it».

Love has its foundation and reaches its highest form in God's love in Christ. We are invited to a dialogue with God. We exist for the love of God, Who created us, and for the love of God which keeps us, «and we can only say we live in full realization of the truth when we freely recognize this love and fully trust our Creator» (II Vatican Council): this is the most important reason of its dignity. In other words, human love must remain under the custody of Divine Love, which is where it comes from, where it finds its reflection and brings it to its fullest. This is why, love, when truly human, loves with God's heart and can even embrace its foe. Otherwise, one does not truly love. To such an extent that the exigency of our giving ourselves sincerely, becomes a divine precept: «For your part you shall be righteous and perfect in the way your heavenly Father is righteous and perfect» (Mt 5:48).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 5,43-48):

Abbé Joan COSTA i Bou
(Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mt 5,20-26):

Jesus said to his disciples, «I tell you, then, that if you are not righteous in a much broader way than the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. You have heard that it was said to our people in the past: ‘Do not commit murder; anyone who does kill will have to face trial’. But now I tell you: whoever gets angry with a brother or sister will have to face trial. Whoever insults a brother or sister deserves to be brought before the council; whoever calls a brother or a sister "Fool" deserves to be thrown into the fire of hell.

»So, if you are about to offer your gift at the altar and you remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar, go at once and make peace with him, and then come back and offer your gift to God. Don't forget this: be reconciled with your opponent quickly when you are together on the way to court. Otherwise he will turn you over to the judge, who will hand you over to the police, who will put you in jail. There you will stay, until you have paid the last penny».

The Application

During the earthly ministry, Jesus had the priority of revealing God and the divine plan for the humanity. In this revelation, He has asked us to identify God in Him, because God and Jesus were ONE. Today in the Gospel Jesus is asking us to know ourselves, our identity and the finality.  It is in this self-knowledge, being aware of our identity and origin that Jesus is exhorting us to act.

In this way of living, discerning everything according our own dignity, we are oriented to act just like His Father, not like any other human being. Thus we look forward, particularly the way God acts and imitate the divine act in our daily life. If we are asked to better our interpersonal relationship, it is an invitation to the imitation of divine relationship: act divinely.

However, God allows us to remain purely human, because a perfect human being is the perfect image of God, just like in the humanity of Jesus, we find the divinity of the Father. If we fail to act in a dignified way and refuse to forgive others, then we are inviting others to act in the same way, thus we end up in judging ourselves, not divinely, but against the divine will.  God remains however the same, by proposing to us continuously the occasion for conversion. Lenten season is one such occasion given to us by God, through the Church.

«If you are not righteous in a much broader way than the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven»

Fr. Joaquim MESEGUER García
(Sant Quirze del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, Jesus exhorts us to go beyond legalisms: «I tell you, then, that if you are not righteous in a much broader way than the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees, you cannot enter the Kingdom of heaven» (Mt 5:20). The Law of Moses aims at the necessary minimum to guarantee coexistence; but Christians, led by Jesus Christ, and full of the Holy Spirit, have to try to overcome this minimum to reach the climax of love. The Scribes and the Pharisees were strictly abiding by the Commandments; when looking over our own life, could we say the same? Let us therefore be careful not to look down on their religious experience.

What Jesus is teaching us today is to avoid feeling too safe just because we try hard to fulfill those requirements that may render us righteous in the face of God, as the Scribes and the Pharisees used to do; but, rather, to put our emphasis in our love for God and for our brothers; the kind of love that will allow us to go beyond the coldness of the Law while humbly recognizing our own shortcomings in a sincere conversion.

There are those who say: ‘I am good for I do not steal, nor do I kill, nor have I ever hurt anybody’; but Jesus admonishes us that this is not enough, as there other ways to steal and to kill. We can kill someone else's illusions; we can look down on our neighbour, overshadow him or alienate him; we can bear malice against him, and all this means killing too, not physically but, indeed, morally and spiritually.

Throughout our life, we can find many adversaries, but we are our worst enemy when we stray from the Gospel. This is why, in seeking reconciliation with our brothers, first we have to be reconciled with ourselves. Saint Augustine tells us: «As long as you are your own adversary, the Word of God will also be your adversary. Become friendly with yourself and you will have become reconciled with it».

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 5,20-26):

Gospel text

(Mt 7,7-12):

Jesus said to his disciples, «Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened. For everyone who asks, receives; whoever seeks, finds; and the door will be opened to him who knocks. Would any of you give a stone to your son when he asks for bread? Or give him a snake, when he asks for a fish? As bad as you are, you know how to give good things to your children. How much more, then, will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! So, do to others whatever you would that others do to you: there you have the Law and the Prophets».

The Application

Lenten season is a moment of renewal and a joyful pilgrimage towards the Pascal event. The mother Church invites her faithful to deepen her prayer, thus the faithful will be able to re-establish the broken relationship with the Father. The more we better our human relationship, the better we understand the divine initiatives in us.

Since God has created man in His own image, the humanity is the best tool of divine understanding. Jesus uses normal images and symbols to help us to understand God. Today He is asking us to see our own family and the family relationship. Man even in his weakness knows to love and take care of his dear and near ones, particularly his children. From this human reality, Jesus is asking us to infer the divine truth of unconditional divine love. This God continues to love us and care about us. The Christian faith helps us, even in our desperate moment of life, in our total brokenness, just like Esther, to put all our trust in the Lord.

The personal conversion and belief in this wonderful God, is the finality of our engagement in this Lenten time. Our faith should give us the energy to put all our talents and gifts to serve the humanity. Thus, in this human service, we will be able to serve God. Jesus in today’s gospel is asking each and every one of us, to behave just like His Father and cooperate with Him, in the building of heaven on this earth.

«For everyone who asks, receives; whoever seeks, finds»

Fr. Joaquim MESEGUER García
(Sant Quirze del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain
)

Today, Jesus reminds us of the need and power of prayer. We cannot understand our Christian life without being related to God, and in this relation, prayer takes a central place. While we live in this world, we Christians find ourselves on a pilgrimage road, but our prayer gets us closer to God, opens up the door of his immense love and brings forward the Heaven delights. This is why, our Christian life is a constant request and search: «Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened» (Mt 7:7), says Jesus to his disciples.

At the same time, the prayer gradually turns a stone heart into a flesh heart: «As bad as you are, you know how to give good things to your children. How much more, then, will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!» (Mt 7:11). The best summary we can ask God can be found in Our Lord's Prayer: «Your kingdom come and your will be done, on earth as in heaven» (cf. Mt 6:10). We, therefore, cannot ask just anything in our prayers, but something which is really for our own good. If nobody wants to hurt himself, we should not want any damage for others, either.

We, sometimes, fail to see God's concern for us, for we find our prayers seemingly unanswered or may even feel God does not love us. In such moments, it will do us good to remember this advice from Saint Jerome: «It is certain God gives to he, who asks, that he, who seeks, finds, and that he, who knocks, will be opened: It is clearly seen that he, who has not received, who has not found, who has not been opened, is just because he did not know how to ask, how to seek nor how to knock at the door». Let us, therefore, ask God, in the first place, to give us a loving heart just like that of Jesus Christ.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 7,7-12):

Gospel text

(Lk 11,29-32):

As the crowd increased, Jesus began to speak in this way, «People of the present time are evil people. They ask for a sign, but no sign will be given to them except the sign of Jonah. As Jonah became a sign for the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be a sign for this generation. The Queen of the South will rise up on Judgment Day with the people of these times and accuse them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and here there is greater than Solomon. The people of Nineveh will rise up on Judgment Day with the people of these times and accuse them, for Jonah's preaching made them turn from their sins, and here there is greater than Jonah».

The Application

We all need visible signs to believe. It is from this visible and palpable realities that we infer the invisible truth. Anyone who desires sincerely and engage positively to know God and His will, our salvation history affirms the divine generosity. Where there is no sincere engagement and when people ask question with intellectual and scientific orientation with the pretext of searching Faith, without having a sense of sacred and truthfulness in their research, God doesn’t hesitate to slash the mask, by naming them as wicked generation.

Jesus insists the importance of having the eye of faith and look everything with the divine vision without any prejudgement and colour. When we learn to see the world with an eye of the child which discovers for the first time the snow, the rain, the wind, the fire, etc., we will certainly end up with a simple wonder of marvellous amusement and mystery. This feeling in its purity will help us to see the divine work in us and in and around us.

Jonas represent for us the hope that God continues to shower on us. He continues to send messengers and prophets to guide us, to orient us and to admonish us. Even a non-living being, like a stone on the way, can be a true sign of divine revelation. How can you fail to admire the nature in front of you and thank the Creator for this wonderful personal gift to you and to the whole world, to live the life in a meaningful way? By listening the divine signs, shall we imitate the people of Nineveh?

«Here there is greater than Solomon; here there is greater than Jonah»

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench
(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today's Gospel invites us to focus our hopes in the very Jesus. John Paul II has, in this regard, written that «our salvation would not come from a formula, but from a Person and the certitude this Person instills into us: ‘I am here, in your midst!’».

God —who is Father too— has not gone back on us: «Christianism is a state of grace, it is the surprise of a God that, not satisfied by the creation of the world and of man, has decided to side by his creature» (John Paul II).

We find ourselves beginning Lent: let us not ignore the opportunity the Church is offering us: «Now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation» (2Cor 6:2). After looking at Our Lord Jesus Christ's suffering face during his Passion, shall we still dare asking for additional evidence of His Love? «For He had made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him» (2Cor 5:21). Even more: «He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall He not, along with him, also freely give us all things? (Rm 8:32). Do we still pretend more signs?

In Christ's bloodstained face «there is greater than Solomon (...); here, there is greater than Jonah» (Lk 11:31-32). This suffering face of the last hour, of the hour of the Cross is «a mystery within the mystery, in front of which human beings should prostate in worship». Indeed, «to return the face of the Father to men, Jesus had, not only to take on man's face, but to suffer the “face” of sin, too» (John Paul II). Do we want more signs?

«Behold, the man!» (Jn 19:5): herein lies the great sign. Let us watch it from the silence of the “desert” prayer: «What every Christian has to do at all times [to pray], he ought to do it now more carefully and more devotedly: we shall then abide by the apostolic institution of the forty days» (Saint Leo the Great, pope).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 11,29-32):

Gospel text

(Mt 6,7-15):

Jesus said to his disciples, «When you pray, do not use a lot of words, as the pagans do, for they hold that the more they say, the more chance they have of being heard. Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need, even before you ask him.

»This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, holy be your name, your kingdom come and your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts just as we have forgiven those who are in debt to us. Do not bring us to the test but deliver us from the evil one’. If you forgive others their wrongs, your Father in heaven will also forgive yours. If you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive you either».

The Application

To live this Lenten season in a meaningful way, one of the main pillars is ‘prayer’. Today, Jesus is teaching us to pray. If you look differently this prayer, it is not simple recitation of few words, it is actually calling us into action. Let’s look at it:

Our Father in heaven.

The very beginning of this prayer is calling us to establish an affective relationship with God, as father. How to pray without establishing this personal and affective relationship? This very same phrase in telling another truth of God, as ‘in heaven’ which indirectly invites us to have some basic self-knowledge, as an ordinary being, living on this earth and God as someone very far away, in heaven. Anything heavenly is not possible to access in an earthly manner. Thus God remains invisible, incomprehensible, unimaginable, etc., has become visible, imaginable and understandable in Jesus Christ. And, we have to work hard to understand this God in Christ and in this prayer we promise to do so.

Thy will be done:

It is in this right understanding of God, (false understanding is also possible) will help us to know and understand the divine will, in every aspect of our personal, spiritual and social life. In light of this revelation of the divine will and the way God reigns in heaven, we pray that thy kingdom come. How to pray without knowing these divine truth, which is the basic of our Christian faith? The very prayer is our positive answer to engage concretely to accomplish this divine will, just like Jesus has done in his life on the earth. Isn’t our responsibility to act positively so that God’s continuous presence be felt in our society?

Our daily bread:

It is to accomplish this divine will that we ask the Lord the daily bread, rather the heavenly bread, the Eucharist. We promise our confidence in the providence of the Lord, to be nourished daily, in all aspects of life, including material needs. Our prayer of supplication finds its source and meaning in the divine providence.

Forgive us as we forgive:

This is not a condition, but our response to the need of the Lord. As I feel and experience the divine mercy, Jesus wishes that we remain in our inter-personal relationship, the visible sign of divine mercy, by forgiving our brothers and sisters. Though the divine forgiveness is not conditioned by human behaviour, if we wish to be filled, we should be ready to empty ourselves. The more we forgive, the more we empty ourselves, so that God could fill it with the divine mercy.

If you still believe that the Lord’s Prayer is a simple recitation of words, I feel really sorry for you. Have a wonderful day.

«When you pray, do not use a lot of words; your Father knows what you need»

Fr. Joaquim FAINÉ i Miralpech
(Tarragona, Spain)

Today, Jesus —the Son of God— teaches us how to behave like a son of God. A first aspect is our trust and the confidence we should have when we talk to him. But our Lord warns us: «When you pray, do not use a lot of words» (Mt 6:7). When we talk to our parents, we do not resort to complicate reasoning, nor to using a lot of words, but they simply ask for what they need. We should always know God will listen to us because God —who is also the Father— loves us and listens to us. In fact, to pray is not so much to inform God, but to ask him for all we need, as «Your Father knows what you need, even before you ask him» (Mt 6:8). We will not be good Christians if we do not pray, as a son cannot be a good son if he does not talk to his parents.

The Lord's Prayer is the prayer that Jesus himself taught us, and it is just a compendium of our Christian life. Each time we say the Lord's Prayer we let the Father to take us by the hand and we ask him what we need everyday to become a better sons of God. We need not only the material bread, but —more than that— the Celestial Bread: «Let us beg we never lack the Eucharist bread». We need also to learn to forgive and to be forgiven: «To be able to receive the forgiveness God offers us, let us to address ourselves to the Father who loves us», as it is said in the Mass in the preliminary introduction to our Lord's Prayer.

During Lent, the Church is asking us to deepen in our prayers. «The prayer, our colloquy with God, is our best treasure, because it means (...) being united to him» (Saint John Crisostom). Oh Lord! I need to learn how to pray and how to draw specific benefits for my own life. Mostly to live the virtue of charity: the prayer gives me strength to live it better every day. And this is why I ask him daily to help me to forgive not only the small troubles I may have to face from others but, also, the offensive words and attitudes and, more than that, to bear no malice to my fellow men, so that I can sincerely tell them I have forgiven from the bottom of my heart those who are in debt with me. I will be able to achieve it because God's Mother will help me at all times.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 6,7-15):

Abbé Joaquim FAINÉ i Miralpech
(Tarragona, Espagne)
