Gospel text (Jn 16,29-33):

The disciples said to Jesus, «Now you are speaking plainly and not in veiled language! Now we see that you know all things, even before we question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God». Jesus answered them, «You say that you believe! The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each one to his home, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. I have told you all this, so that in me you may have peace. You will have trouble in the world; but, courage! I have overcome the world».

«Courage! I have overcome the world»

Fr. Jordi CASTELLET i Sala
(Sant Hipòlit de Voltregà, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we may have the feeling that the world of faith in Christ is weakening. Many are symptoms against the fortitude and courage we would like to receive from a life integrally based on the Gospel. Consumerism, capitalism, sensualism and materialism values are very much in fashion and against any representation that may be in tune with the evangelical demands. Nevertheless, this combination of values and life ways do not provide either our own personal plenitude or our peace; in fact, it rather brings an intimate feeling of discomfort and uneasiness. Could not it be because of this circumstance that, today, we see lots of people in public sulking, lost in though and worrying about a rather obscure future, most probably because they have pledged it against the cost of a car, a flat or some holidays they simply cannot afford?

Jesus' words inspire confidence: «Courage! I have overcome the world» (Jn 16:33), that is, through his Passion, Death and Resurrection, He has attained the eternal life, life with nothing to stop it, a limitless life because it has overcome all limits and all difficulties.

We, soldiers of Christ, can overcome these difficulties too, as He did, in spite of the fact we may have to go throughout our life through many deaths and resurrections, never wanted but certainly assumed by the very Paschal Mystery of Christ. For “deaths” indeed are, losing a friend, parting with a beloved person, the failure of a project or the limitations our own human weakness impose upon us…

But «in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us» (Rm 8:37). Let us be witnesses to God's love, because He has, with us, «done great things» (Lk 1:49) and has given us his help to overcome all difficulties, even death, because Christ is sending us the Holy Spirit.

Abbé Jordi CASTELLET i Sala

This Sunday, which is between the Feast of Ascension and Pentecost, may remain invisibly suffocated. However, just like any other Sundays, the Church offers us this gospel for contemplation.  As you all know that I am neither a great theologian, nor an exegetist, I share with you, how I try to put daily gospel in act. For this reason, I would like to choose two words out of this gospel: The glory of the Father and eternal life. Both words are closely related.

Let us first look at Jesus, how He glorified His Father and how God glorified His Son. By observing Jesus as close as possible, we discover in Him and through Him the divine glory; The fulfilment of the will of his Father. ‘Jesus glorified his Father’ is synonymous with ‘Jesus did the will of his Father’. It was the finality of the incarnation and the joy of Jesus. When Jesus said that Father had glorified Him, I understood from Him, God recognized in the works of His Son the fulfilment of His will. A true divine recognition. In the other words God revealed the divine plan to the disciples of Jesus. By this revelation they have seen and witnessed the divine glory in Jesus.

Therefore, if we wish to glorify the Father, we must discover His will. Once we have discovered His will, we must begin to fulfil it. For this, if we need a special grace, we need humility to make a just request and God who has acknowledged our intentions and actions will respond positively. How to discover the divine will? It is in Jesus alone that we can discover it. Jesus told us that the divine will is, what we have eternal life.

In today’s gospel Jesus removes our ignorance of eternal life. Very often we imagine that the eternal life is a life of long duration, a life without death. It is not wrong for a simple understanding for the little child, but not entirely correct. Jesus teaches us by saying, eternal life is to know God as He is. It is not an intellectual knowledge, nor a knowledge of God, but an infusion into God, as Jesus is united in His Father. A configuration par excellence in God. God in us and us in God. Jesus had this kind relationship with His Father and proposed the same to His disciples.  He has asked his disciples to discover His Father in Him. In this relationship we can no longer die. Through this union we participate in divine eternity.

For the application and realization of this state of life in God, it is important that we observe the lives of the disciples. The disciples were united with their Master, first by prayer, especially a common prayer. We must acknowledge in this gospel that the disciples prayed together with Mary, the mother of God and with the other women.

The Christian community excludes no one, it is by its very nature in an inclusive community.  Our faith is though very personal and deep it may be, it has a communitarian foundation.  Our Faith is not a new invention rather has a very long history. It is in this salvation history that we are all are associated and are invited to pray and implement all that Jesus taught us. The Christian life is essentially a contemplative life in which man contemplates the Word of God and also action filled life in which man put in act all that he has contemplated. The action and contemplation, both go together.

We still have another biblical person in Mary present in the assembly among other believers and disciples who can help us to listen to the Lord and to put into practice this word of God.  A perfect model of contemplation and action integrated personality. The Church cannot glorify Christ without listening to Mary, her mother, who continues to tell us, 'do whatever He tells you.' This Word of Mary will remain eternally rooted in our spirituality and we deeply believe in her intercession. She is able to bring us to her Son, and the Son will bring us to his Father. Yet, as Jesus promised us, it is the Holy Spirit who will gradually reveal to us the path that will lead us to the perfection of joy, joy in Christ, joy in his Father, The joy of Father. Good Sunday

Bon Dimanche

Gospel text

(Jn 16, 23-28):

Jesus said to his disciples, «When that day comes you will not ask me anything. Truly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my Name, He will give you. So far you have not asked in my Name; ask and receive that your joy may be full. I taught you all this in veiled language, but the time is coming when I shall no longer speak in veiled language, but will tell you plainly of the Father. When that day comes, you will ask in my Name and it will not be for me to ask the Father for you, for the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and you believe that I came from the Father. As I came from the Father and have come into the world, so I am leaving the world and going to the Father».

The application

Though today’s readings are very much Christological and rich in Trinitarian theology, I would like to invite you all to look at these readings in two ways for our practical application.

The first is to discover the divine love which is expressed in Jesus. Only by discovering this divine love that we can understand the depth of divine accompaniment in our personal life. The first Christian community felt deeply this divine accompaniment, particularly during their difficult time. If we do little contemplation of our own difficult time, we too will understand how much God suffered with us and how in discretion He has accompanied us. We too are called to accompany others in their difficult time.

The second point simply flows from the first point. It is by realising this divine love and accompaniment that we present our demands and supplications before the Lord, in the confidence that our Lord will listen our prayers. Jesus is reminding us the need to put our confidence in the providence of the Father through Him and the Father, will surly respond to our demands, through Jesus Christ. However, it is the Holy Spirit who will sanctify us and thus we integrate all our spirituality in to this Trinitarian theology. The unity in our christina life is born from the trinitarian spirituality. Thus we as christians believe that Jesus is from the Father and the Father is in Jesus. If we apply the same in our personal relationship, we will discover how deeply God lives in each and every one of us. Thus our personaly relationship with others have a deep theological meaning and every human encounder is thus transformed into a divine encounter.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

Offer prayers in Christ's name, by Cyril of Alexandria, 376-444 A.D.

"He urges the disciples to seek for spiritual gifts and at the same time gives them confidence that, if they ask for them, they will not fail to obtain them. He adds the word Amen, that he might confirm their belief that if they ask the Father for anything they would receive it from him. He would act as their mediator and make known their request and, being one with the Father, grant it. For this is what he means by 'in my name'. For we cannot draw near to God the Father in any other way than through the Son. For it is by him that we have access in the one Spirit to the Father (Ephesians 2:8). It was because of this that he said, 'I am the door. I am the way. No one comes to the Father but by me' (John 10:7; 14:6). For as the Son is God, he being one with the Father provides good things for his sanctified people and is found to be generous of his wealth to us... Let us then offer our prayers in Christ's name. For in this way, the Father will most readily consent to them and grant his graces to those who seek them, that receiving them we may rejoice." (excerpt from COMMENTARY ON THE GOSPEL OF JOHN 11.2)

«As I came from the Father (...) so I am leaving the world and going to the Father»

Fr. Xavier ROMERO i Galdeano
(Cervera, Lleida, Spain)

Today, vigil of our Lord's Ascension into Heaven, the Gospel leaves us with some very fond farewell words. Jesus let us share his most precious mystery; God Father is his origin and, at the same time, his destination: «As I came from the Father and have come into the world, so I am leaving the world and going to the Father» (Jn 16:28).

This great Truth of the Second Person of the Holy Trinity should be constantly hammering into our heads: Jesus is really the Son of God: God Father is his origin and God Father is his destination.

For those who claim to know everything on God, but question Jesus' Divine filiation, today's Gospel has an important thing they should remember: “He, who” the Jews name God is who sent Jesus to us; He is, therefore, the Father to those who believe. With this we are clearly told that God can only and truly be known by those who accept Jesus' Father is God.

But Jesus' Divine filiation also reminds us of another important thing for our lives: those baptized into Christ are sons of God through the Holy Spirit. And this hides a most beautiful mystery for us: this adoptive fatherhood by God towards us is different of human adoption insofar it has a true foundation in each one of us, as it implies a new birth. Consequently, he who has been accepted in the great Divine Family is no longer a stranger to it.

This is why in the Mass Collects of the Ascension Day we shall all be reminded that all children must follow the steps of the Son: «Grant us, we pray, almighty God, the gift of a blessed joy and the rejoicing of a burning thanksgiving, for the Ascension into the heavens of Christ, your Son, also is our submission and glory, for where the Head ascended the body hopes to ascend, too». So no Christian should therefore let be left behind, for this is far more important than participating in any marathon race, the finishing line being in Heaven, with the very God!

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 16, 23-28):

Abbé Xavier ROMERO i Galdeano
(Cervera, Lleida, Espagne)

Gospel text (Jn 16,20-23a):

Jesus said to his disciples, «Truly, I say to you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn to joy. A woman in childbirth is in distress because her time is at hand. But after the child is born, she no longer remembers her suffering because of such great joy: a human being is born into the world. You feel sorrowful now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice. And no one will take your joy from you. When that day comes you will not ask me anything. Truly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my Name, He will give you».

«Your sorrow will turn to joy»

+ Fr. Joaquim FONT i Gassol
(Igualada, Barcelona, Spain)

Today we begin the Decad of the Holy Spirit. Reliving the memory of Cenacle, we see the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, Mother of Good Counsel, talking with the Apostles. What a warm and brimful conversation! Recalling all the joys they shared with their Master. The Paschal days, the Ascension and Jesus' promises. The sufferings of the Passion days have turned into joy. What a nice atmosphere at the Cenacle! And what is yet to come, as Jesus has told them.

We now know that Mary, Queen of the Apostles, Spouse of the Holy Spirit, Mother of the raising Church, guide us to receive the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit. The gifts are like a boat's sails when unfurled and the wind —representing the grace— blowing in favor: what a speed and easiness of the course!

The Lord has also promised us to transform into joy the hardship of our journey: «And no one will take your joy from you» (Jn 16:22) and «your joy will be complete» (Jn 16:24). And in Psalm 126:6: «Those who go forth weeping, carrying sacks of seed, will return with cries of joy, carrying their bundled sheaves».

All this week the Liturgy speaks of revitalizing, of exulting (jumping with joy), of an eternal and certain happiness. Everything leads us to live in prayer. As St. Josemaria says: «I want you to be always contented, because joy is an integral part of your life —Implore this supernatural joy for everybody».

Human beings need to laugh both for their physical and spiritual health. Healthy humor teaches us how to live. St. Paul will say: «And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God» (Rm 8:28). And here you have a good jaculatory prayer!: «It's all unto good»; «Omnia in bonum!».

+ Abbé Joaquim FONT i Gassol
(Igualada, Barcelona, Espagne)

The Ascension is the final apparition of the Lord after the resurrection. This moment gives us an assurance and promise, 'I am with you till end of the world', and in this promise He asks each and every one of us to prepare ourselves for this presence and receive it with dignity. It is not the way we would imagine, rather in His own way that we will understand in later days. In this divine promise there is also an universal mission, 'go', don’t remain here, rather spread the perfume of divine presence in this world. Fortunately, we are not sent alone, but with others, together, to witness his resurrection and the story of salvation.

Today, like the disciples, we remember all the post-resurrection apparitions, in which we discover his accompaniment and his teachings. It is important that we read again and again the last words of Jesus, particularly in the gospel of John. These encounters though look simple for us, after 2000 years, however, were difficult for his disciples to understand. The truth of the resurrection and his mystery remained incomprehensible. The gospel of the day makes it clear to us by saying, "When they saw him, they bowed down, but some doubted. " Sadly this doubt persists in our humanity. It is our duty to clear this doubt in the heart of man.

Since the Easter vigil we contemplate in the joy, the resurrection of the Lord and recognize the gift of Life, a new life, the eternal life that God has offered us in his Son. This life in the risen Christ comes with power in heaven and on earth. Through our baptism Jesus has made us possible to participate in this power with the divine mission. We must know how to use this divine power which God has entrusted to us.

Every Sunday gathering is an opportunity to give an account of the fruits of this gift,  for everything we have received from the Lord, and we do it not alone, but with others. That I had done with this power and new life in Christ? And how I had used my life, especially for the unity of the people of God, to make disciples of the Lord and to proclaim His Kingdom?  We must recognize a contemporary reality that our Sunday celebration has become merely a cult and the gathering people is merely a gathering of individuals. It is necessary to come out of our own confinement, and march towards the peripheries of the world.

Even though we are small or weak, we must remember, in the society where women were considered less than an animal, it was a woman who was chosen to announce the resurrection to the disciples. Everything begins in a place of little importance, Galilee, “can anything good can out of Galilee? The more we feel weak, the more we are strengthened by the Lord. I believe that we are well placed to proclaim this Good News. Even in our weaknesses and limitations,  we can make disciples.

May this Ascension Day be a new beginning of life that invites us to become missionaries in the house where we are. Let us announce the Good News and prepare ourselves to welcome the Holy Spirit into our hearts. Amen.

Amen.
