Gospel text

(Jn 15,9-11):

Jesus said to his disciples, «As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; remain in my love. You will remain in my love if you keep my commandments, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love. I have told you all this, that my own joy may be in you and your joy may be complete».

The application

The word ‘love’ is so vulgarised in the contemporary world, that many of us find difficult to use it in our ordinary communication. Without entering into the details and meanings, I would like to invite you all to look at the essential of today’s gospel reading. ‘That my own joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.’

Many of us search this joy in our life, where the eternal peace remain deeply anchored. How to have this joy, particularly the ‘joy’ of Christ? To know this, we should look into Jesus and He says to us that He kept faithfully the commandment of the His Father, or rather tried to fulfil the Will of the Father.

It is here that we can try to accomplish in a simple way. Just ask the Lord, what he would do in a particular given time and how will He act in a given situation. Jesus always did, though sometime He found it difficult. It is in this total surrender to the divine will, even though we may not understand it now (like Mary and the disciples), that we will find the joy and His joy in its perfection. Since God is filled with goodness, our total surrender to this goodness, will give us in return the goodness with multiplications.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

Joy in rejoicing over us, by Augustine of Hippo, 354-430 A.D.

"And what else is Christ's joy in us except that he is pleased to rejoice over us? And what is this joy of ours that he says is to be made full, but our having fellowship with him?... His joy, therefore, in us is the grace he has bestowed on us, and that is also our joy. But he rejoiced over this joy even from eternity when he chose us before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). Nor can we rightly say that his joy was not full. For God's joy was never at any time imperfect. But that joy of his was not in us. For we, in whom that joy could exist, had as yet no existence. And even when our existence commenced, it began not to be in him. But in him it always was, who in the infallible truth of his own foreknowledge rejoiced that we should yet be his own. Accordingly, he had a joy over us that was already full when he rejoiced in foreknowing and foreordaining us. And there could hardly be any fear intermingling in that joy of his that might imply a possible failure in what he foreknew would be done by himself." (excerpt from TRACTATES ON THE GOSPEL OF JOHN 83.1)

«As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you»

Fr. Lluís RAVENTÓS i Artés
(Tarragona, Spain)

Today, we hear again the intimate confidence Jesus made last Holy Thursday: «As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you» (Jn 15:9). The Father's love for the Son is immense, tender, dear. We can read it in the Book of Proverbs, when He affirms that long before initiating his deeds «Then was I beside him as his craftsman, and I was his delight day by day, playing before him all the while» (Pr 8:30). This is how He loves us and, prophetically announcing it in the same book, He adds: «Playing on the surface of his earth; and I found delight in the sons of men» (Pr 8:31).

The Father loves the Son, and Jesus tells us so: «And He that sent me is with me: the Father has not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him» (Jn 8:29). The Father loudly proclaimed it in the Jordan, when He says: «You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased» (Mk 1:11) and, later on, in Mount Tabor: «This is my beloved Son. Listen to him» (Mk 9:7).

Jesus has replied, «Abbà», Pater! Now He reveals us, «As the Father has loved me, so I love you». And what shall we do? To stay indeed by his love, to abide by his commandments, to love His Father's Will. Is not this the example He gives us? «I always keep my Father's commandments and remain in his love».

But we, who are weak, fickle, cowards and —why not just admit it— even wicked at times, shall we then lose his friendship forever? No, He will not allow us to be tempted well over our own forces! And, if we ever fail to abide by his commandments, let us ask him the grace of quickly coming back to him, as the prodigal son to the Father's house. And of being able to receive the Sacrament of Penance and be forgiven our sins. «I love you —Jesus tells us—. I have told you all this, that my own joy may be in you and your joy may be complete» (Jn 15:9-11).

Texte de l'Évangile

 (Jn 15,9-11):

Abbé Lluís RAVENTÓS i Artés
(Tarragona, Espagne)

Jésus a répondu, «Abbá», Papa!

Gospel text (Jn 15,1-8):

Jesus said to his disciples, «I am the true vine and my Father is the winegrower. If any of my branches doesn't bear fruit, he breaks it off; and he prunes every branch that does bear fruit, that it may bear even more fruit. You are already made clean by the word I have spoken to you; live in me as I live in you. The branch cannot bear fruit by itself but has to remain part of the vine; so neither can you if you don't remain in me. I am the vine and you are the branches. As long as you remain in me and I in you, you bear much fruit; but apart from me you can do nothing. Whoever does not remain in me is thrown away as they do with branches and they wither. Then they are gathered and thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words in you, you may ask whatever you want and it will be given to you. My Father is glorified when you bear much fruit: it is then that you become my disciples».

The application

The story or vine and the branch is one of the best for my personal life. For a perfect Christological configuration this image can be applied in letter and spirit. However, our daily duties and obligations point to us our inability to remain always faithful to this configuration.

I would like to invite you to look this necessity in two ways. The first and the best is to know the heart of Jesus and how much He desires that we remain in Him. Living in Him is the best a Christian can desire for. The send one may be little more practical, which is from our view point. That is to say, if I remain with Him, I have lot of advantages and why to remain detached?

I do everything in a very simple way. First, before deciding on anything I put Jesus before me and ask Him His opinion. Or, I imagine, if the Lord is there, how will He act upon? I give to myself little silence and wait for the response. Indirectly waiting to discern the divine will in this particular act.

It is quite possible in some of my acts, I do fail very drastically. In this failure, I forgive myself by telling that I may not have discerned it well, or God wanted it another way. In all things I glorify the Lord for given me a wonderful opportunity.

Today’s first reading can be a good model for our daily life.

«Live in me as I live in you»

Today, once more, we may see Jesus surrounded by the Apostles in an atmosphere of especial intimacy. He is giving them what we could consider as his final recommendations: what is normally said in the last moment, in the last farewell; that which has an especial force, as if it would be the last will.

We imagine them in the cenacle. Jesus has washed their feet there, has announced them again He must go, has transmitted them his command of fraternal love and has consoled them with the gift of the Eucharistic and the promise of the Holy Spirit (cf. Jn 14). And, well ahead this 15th chapter of John's Gospel we now find the exhortation to unity within charity.

Our Lord does not hide to his disciples all the dangers and difficulties they will have to face in the near future: «If they persecuted Me they will persecute you...» (Jn 15:20). But they should not be intimidated nor overwhelmed by all the hate they will find in this world: Jesus renews his promise of the arrival of the Protector, while assuring them they may ask and they will be given. Finally, the Lord prays for them —for all of us— to the Holy Father during his priestly prayer (cf. Jn 17).

But our danger does not come from outside, though: the worst menace may arise within ourselves when we fail to respect the fraternal love among the members of Christ's Mystic Body or the unity with the Head of that Body. The recommendation is clear: «I am the vine and you are the branches. As long as you remain in me and I in you, you bear much fruit; but apart from me you can do nothing» (Jn 15:5).

The first generations of Christians managed to keep a very clear conscience of the importance of remaining united through charity. Here is the testimony of one the Fathers of the Church, saint Ignatius of Antioch: «Do you therefore all run together as into one temple of God, as to one altar, as to one Jesus Christ, who came forth from one Father». And here is also an indication from the Virgin Mary, Mother of the Christians: «Whatsoever he said unto you, do [it]» (Jn 2:5).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 15,1-8):

Abbé Antoni CAROL i Hostench

Gospel text (Jn 14,21-26):

Jesus said to his disciples, «Whoever keeps my commandments is the one who loves me. If he loves me, he will also be loved by my Father; I too shall love him and show myself clearly to him». Judas —not the Iscariot— asked Jesus, «Lord, how can it be that you will show yourself clearly to us and not to the world?». Jesus answered him, «If anyone loves me, he will keep my word and my Father will love him; and we will come to him and make a room in his home. But if anyone does not love me, he will not keep my words, and these words that you hear are not mine but the Father's who sent me. I told you all this while I was still with you. From now on the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of all that I have told you».

«The Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of all that I have told you»

Today, Jesus shows us his immense desire for us to share his plenitude. United with him, we live into the stream of divine life that is the Holy Trinity. «God is with you. In your soul filled with grace, lives the Blessed Trinity. —This is why, you, despite all your misery, may and must be in steady conversation with the Lord» (Saint Josemaria).

Jesus assures us He will be present with us in the divine intimacy of the soul through grace. Thus, we Christians are no longer orphans. He loves us so much that, though He does not need us, He does not want to prescind from us.

«Whoever keeps my commandments is the one who loves me. If he loves me, he will also be loved by my Father; I too shall love him and show myself clearly to him» (Jn 14:21). This thought helps us to have presence of God. And those desires or thoughts which, eventually, are wasting our time and preventing us from abiding by the divine will, will have no room any more on our minds. This is an advice from saint Gregory the Great: «Let us not be seduced by the flattery of prosperity, because it is a stupid traveler he who sees, during his journey, delightful prairies but forgets where he was heading for».

God's presence in our heart will help us discover and carry out in this world those designs the Divine Providence may have planned for us. The Spirit of the Lord will arouse initiatives in our heart to be placed on top of all human activities and, thus, make Christ stand out over and above all of us. If we manage to have this intimacy with Jesus we shall end up by being good sons of God and will always and everywhere feel as his friends: whether in the street, amidst our daily chores or within our family life.

All light and fire of divine life will fall upon each one of the faithful who are willing to receive the gift of divinity living in our soul. God's Mother will intercede for us —as our own mother that she also is— to deeply enter into this covenant with the Holy Trinity.

Gospel text

(Jn 13,16-20):

After Jesus had washed the feet of the disciples He said «Truly, I say to you, the servant is not greater than his master, nor is the messenger greater than he who sent him. Understand this, and blessed are you if you put it into practice. I am not speaking of you all, because I know the ones I have chosen and the Scripture has to be fulfilled that says, ‘The one who shared my table has risen against me’ I tell you this now before it happens, so that when it does happen, you may know that I am He. Truly, I say to you, whoever welcomes the one I send, welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me, welcomes the One who sent me».

The application

If there is something that the disciples have recalled fondly after the resurrection is this very moment of sharing the bread and in the heart of this sharing Jesus has placed the service. The washing of the feet is placed as the centre of this breaking of the bread. It is certainly very clear that Jesus is as the service of the will of the Father. Mint time Jesus reminded his disciples to understand the importance of the accomplishment of the divine will, for Him, and for the society.

It is from here that Jesus forms and sends His disciple in mission. This divine preparation will be recalled later, when the disciples themselves would call this very sharing of the Word of God in the breaking of the bread, like the disciples of Emmaus, as a heart burning and joyful moment of life.

Paul and all those who accompanied him will share with the people this joy of the divine accomplishment in Jesus, certainly, without judging others. Jesus knew that our enemy reminds not outside of us, rather in us. This is the crude and painful truth that He teaches today. The devil always tries to put the darkness in our heart that even if the sun remains bright outside, the devil doesn’t allow the light to enter into us.

Unless and until we discover the Holy Spirit that God has sent to us, it’s very difficult to understand the salvific plan that God has accomplished in Christ. Unless and until we discover and accept the Christ crucified, we will never be able to understand how much God loves us in Christ.

«After Jesus had washed the feet of the disciples...»

Fr. David COMPTE i Verdaguer
(Manlleu, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, as with those movies that, at the beginning, take us back in time, our liturgy remembers a passage that belongs to the Holy Thursday: Jesus washes the feet of his disciples (cf. Jn 13:12). Thus, this gesture —read from the Easter perspective— recovers a perennial validity. Let us consider only three ideas.

In the first place, the centrality of the person. In our society it seems that to do is the thermometer to measure a person's worth. Within this dynamic it is easy for people to be considered as tools; we use each other extremely easy. Today, the Gospel urges us to transform this dynamic into service dynamics: the other party will never be just a tool. It would rather be a matter of living a spirituality of communion, where the other one —quoting John Paul II— becomes “someone that belongs to me” and a “gift to me”, whom we have “to give room” to. In our language we could translate it as “to care about other people's feelings”. Do we care about other people's feelings? Do we listen to them when they speak to us?

In our world of image and communications, this is not a message to transmit, but a job to be done, to live up to every day: «and blessed are you if you put it into practice!» (Jn 13:17). Maybe, this is why the Master does not limit himself to an explanation: He imprints into his disciples' memory his gesture of service, to pass it immediately on to the Church's memory; a memory that we demand to become a gesture, time and again: in the lives of so many families, of so many people.

Finally, a warning signal: «The one who shared my table has risen against me» (Jn 13:18). In the Eucharist, Jesus resurrected becomes our servant, He washes our feet. But the physical presence is not enough. We have to learn in the Eucharist and get the necessary strength from so that it may become a reality that «having received the gift of love, we die to sin and we live for God» (Saint Fulgence, Bishop of Ruspe).

Abbé David COMPTE i Verdaguer
(Manlleu, Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Jn 12,44-50):

Jesus declared publicly: «Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. And whoever sees me, sees him who sent me. I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I am not the one to condemn him; for I have come, not to condemn the world, but to save the world. The one who rejects me, and does not receive my word, already has a judge: the very word I have spoken will condemn him on the last day. For I have not spoken on my own authority; the Father who sent me has instructed me in what to say and how to speak. I know that his commandment is eternal life, and that is why the message I give, I give as the Father instructed me».

The application

Today’s readings are quite rich in theology and we have plenty for the application. Thus I propose to you all with lot of choice without giving or insisting any orientations.

First I invite you all to choose one or two words which you find interesting or personally interpellant or challenging. Once you have chosen to word, I invite you to observe the movements interior and see the feelings and emotions that dominate or dwells our thinking. It is here that the Lord works in you and is going to orient your day.

For an example, if you take the world, ‘sent’, see by yourself for what mission that The Lord has called you and sent you. Or simply, are you able to identify the person send by God, either to help you, or who is in need of your help. It is here, where the Lord invites you to act in His place, why not? You see already in the first reading that Paul is asked to be ready for a particular mission. You see there already the role of the community in prayer and the communion. Even though the elements necessary are not visible, they have learned to listen and engage by their obedience. And you………..?

Why not take the word faithfulness, or Jesus as the light of the world. It may be also equally important to look at the way Jesus affirms that He hasn’t come to judge us. Why not meditate on it and see in ourselves, how many times in our words, the way we look at people and gesture that we have become judgemental?  Why not meditate on the authority of Jesus and from where he has received this authority? And our own authority and how we exercise this in our daily life?  Or simply, Jesus brings us towards His Father, and where do we lead the people?

«Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me»

Fr. Julio César RAMOS González SDB

Today, Jesus cries out; He cries out just as someone who is saying words everybody should clearly listen to. His clamor synthesizes his saving mission, as He has come «to save the world» (Jn 12:47), but not on his own but in the name of «the Father who sent me and has instructed me in what to say and how to speak» (Jn 12:49).

It is not yet a month ago when we were celebrating the Paschal Triduum: how much present was the Father in the final hour, the hour of the Cross! As His Holiness John Paul II has written, «Jesus, overwhelmed by his foreknowledge of the trial waiting for him, alone before God, invokes him with his usual and tender expression of trust: ‘Abbá, Father’». The next hours clearly show the intimate dialogue of the Son with the Father: «Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing» (Lk 23:34); «Father, into your hands I commend my spirit» (Lk 23:46).

The importance of this work by the Father and his Messenger, well deserves the personal response of he who is listening. This response is to believe, that is, a profession of faith (cf. Jn 12:44); faith that gives us the light —by the same Jesus— so that we shall not remain in darkness. But, he who rejects all these gifts and manifestations, and does not listen to those words «already has a judge: the very Word I have spoken» (Jn 12:48).

Therefore, to accept Jesus is to believe in, see and listen to the Father, not to be in darkness, to obey the command of eternal life. We certainly deserve Saint John of the Cross' rebuke: «[The Father] with this Word said everything in one go (...). Consequently, if you would like to ask God now, or should you pretend some kind of vision or revelation, it would not only be a piece of nonsense, but an offence for God, for not looking up only at Christ without asking for any other thing or novelty».
