Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 12,24-26.

Si quelqu’un me sert, mon Père l’honorera.

Saint Maxime de Turin (?-v. 420), évêque
Sermon 40 (trad. coll.

Scripture: John 12:24-26 (alternate reading: Matthew 18:15-20)

24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If any one serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; if any one serves me, the Father will honor him.

Commentary of the day

Saint Maximus of Turin (?-c.420), Bishop
Sermon 40 (Migne 1996, p. 178 rev.)

Saint Lawrence, like a seed thrown on the ground

At first glance a mustard seed appears small, ordinary and unimportant ; it has no taste, gives off no smell, gives no cause for presuming any sweetness. But when it is crushed then it spreads abroad its odor and reveals its strength, it has a taste like flame and burns with such strength that we are astonished to find so great a fire in so little a seed… Christian faith, in the same way, seems at first sight to be small, ordinary and weak; it does not show its power nor display its influence. But when crushed by various trials, it demonstrates its vigor, makes its energy burst forth, breathes out the flames of its faith in the Lord. The divine fire makes it quiver with such ardor that, even as it is burning, it warms those who share it, as Cleophas and his companion said in the holy Gospel while the Lord was conversing with them after his passion: “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?” (Lk 24:32)…

We might compare Saint Lawrence to a mustard seed: crushed with numerous tortures he merited the grace of an outstanding martyr in the sight of all the world. While he was yet dwelling in his body he was humble, ignored, ordinary; after he had been tortured, torn apart and burned, he shed on all the faithful throughout the world the good odor of his nobility of soul… Seen from without, this martyr was burning in the flames of a cruel tyrant, but a greater flame, that of the love of Christ, was consuming him from within. An impious king may well have piled on the wood and lit even larger fires but Saint Lawrence, in the fervor of his love, no longer felt those flames… No earthly suffering had mastery over him any longer: his soul already dwelt in heaven.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 25,1-13.

Scripture: Matthew 18:1-5, 10, 12-14

1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" 2 And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them, 3 and said, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 "Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me; 10 "See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.12 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? 13 And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. 14 So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

Commentary of the day

Saint John-Paul II, Pope from 1978 to 2005
Homily for the canonization of St Teresa-Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein), 11/10/98 (trans. ©Libreria vaticana editrice)

“The Bridegroom is here! Go out to meet him.”

Dear brothers and sisters! Because she was Jewish, Edith Stein was taken with her sister Rosa and many other Catholic Jews from the Netherlands to the concentration camp in Auschwitz, where she died with them in the gas chambers. Today we remember them all with deep respect. A few days before her deportation, the woman religious had dismissed the question about a possible rescue: “Do not do it! Why should I be spared? Is it not right that I should gain no advantage from my Baptism? If I cannot share the lot of my brothers and sisters, my life, in a certain sense, is destroyed”.

From now on, as we celebrate the memory of this new saint from year to year, we must also remember the Shoah, that cruel plan to exterminate a people — a plan to which millions of our Jewish brothers and sisters fell victim. May the Lord let his face shine upon them and grant them peace (cf. Nm 6:25f.). For the love of God and man, once again I raise an anguished cry: May such criminal deeds never be repeated against any ethnic group, against any race, in any corner of this world! It is a cry to everyone: to all people of goodwill; to all who believe in the Just and Eternal God; to all who know they are joined to Christ, the Word of God made man. We must all stand together: human dignity is at stake. There is only one human family.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 17,22-27.

Comme ils étaient réunis en Galilée, Jésus leur dit : « Le Fils de l’homme va être livré aux mains des hommes ;

Scripture: Matthew 17:22-27

22 As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, 23 and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day." And they were greatly distressed.

24 When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the half-shekel tax went up to Peter and said, "Does not your teacher pay the tax?" 25 He said, "Yes." And when he came home, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tribute? From their sons or from others?" 26 And when he said, "From others," Jesus said to him, "Then the sons are free. 27 However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook, and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel; take that and give it to them for me and for yourself."

The contemplation

We are all children of God, the creator of this universe. Thus by our nature we are free and liberated people. However in our ignorance we have become slave to money, power and glory. In Jesus, God has liberated us from all these slavery which have dominated this world without any remedy. In Jesus we are born again and find the perfect remedy to be saved, not in arrogance but in humility and simplicity. It is in this simplicity of life and the chosen poverty that Jesus has agreed to pay the tax, though they didn’t merit this tax, because he was the son of the soil. Many of us don’t understand the richness of this poverty and we desire sadly to be rich by possessing very little. Only free children can adopt to new situation and events, and others will be blocked by their ideas and inclinations. Do we really feel free, free from power, glory and wealth which is the cause of our sins? Do we feel the need to be liberated from our sins?

Commentary of the day

Saint Pacian of Barcelona (?-c.390), Bishop
Homily on Baptism, 7

Set free by the Son of Man who was handed over into the hands of men

All peoples have been set free from the powers that held them captive by our Lord Jesus Christ. He it is – yes, he! – who has redeemed us. As the apostle Paul says: “Having forgiven all our transgressions, obliterating the bond against us, nailing it to the cross, he despoiled the principalities and powers, he made a public spectacle of them, leading them away in triumph,” (Col 2,13-15). He has set the captives free and broken our bonds, as David said: “The Lord secures justice for the oppressed; the Lord sets captives free; the Lord gives sight to the blind.” And again: “You have loosed my bonds; to you I will offer sacrifice of thanksgiving,” (Pss. 146[145],7-8; 116[115].16-17).

Yes, we have been released from our bonds, those of us who have been brought together at the Lord's call by the sacrament of baptism...; we have been set free by the blood of Christ and the invocation of his name... And so, my beloved, we were washed by the waters of baptism once for all; once for all we were set free; once for all we were welcomed into the undying Kingdom. Once for all, “Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered,” (Ps32[31].1; Rom 4,7). Bravely hold fast to what you have received; keep it to your own happiness; sin no more. From henceforth, keep yourselves pure and without fault for the day of the Lord.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Luc 12,32-48.

Amen.

Scripture: Luke 12:32-48

32 "Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions, and give alms; provide yourselves with purses that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

35 "Let your loins be girded and your lamps burning, 36 and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the marriage feast, so that they may open to him at once when he comes and knocks. 37 Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes; truly, I say to you, he will gird himself and have them sit at table, and he will come and serve them. 38 If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them so, blessed are those servants! 39 But know this, that if the householder had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into. 40 You also must be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an unexpected hour."

41 Peter said, "Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?" 42 And the Lord said, "Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? 43 Blessed is that servant whom his master when he comes will find so doing. 44 Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. 45 But if that servant says to himself, `My master is delayed in coming,' and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, 46 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will punish him, and put him with the unfaithful. 47 And that servant who knew his master's will, but did not make ready or act according to his will, shall receive a severe beating. 48 But he who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, shall receive a light beating. Every one to whom much is given, of him will much be required; and of him to whom men commit much they will demand the more.

Homily

The readings of the day invite us to remain ready and prepared to welcome the Lord of hope and joy by keeping our lights burning. Certainly this message reminds us of the precariousness of life and how necessary it is that we be rooted in God to keep this life going. In our joyful expectation for the Lord in hope, let us pray and watch, keeping ourselves available for the needs of our dear and near ones. In other words, be a Good Samaritan for our neighbours. Let our life be oriented towards God and His will. God should be the centre of our lives, if we desire to illuminate the world with the Light of Christ.

Since God is love and mercy, life in God is a life completely fulfilled in his love and mercy. This life is firmly found in the rock of love and mercy, which helps us to discover all the good things that we have received from the Lord and acknowledging His goodness and generosity. With this recognition of the wonders that the Lord has done to us, not only individually, but to the whole humanity in our salvation history, we will be able to transform our ordinary life as a grace filled life, a life of thanksgiving.

The psalmist gives us the glimpse to identify such people living in the Lord. "It is our strength, a shield. Your love, O Lord, be upon us as our hope is in you! Whatever happens, their lives are fully confide in the Lord's providence. The worries of this word and all the disappointments of their lives don’t shake their faith and the confidence they have in the Lord. They see even in their miseries and troubled time the divine accompaniment. In their difficult moments of life and tragedies on which they have no power to dominate or control, they look at the evets as an opportunity to grow in faith and love. For us, how can we live our lives fully in the Lord, when see everywhere, the misery?

It is St. Paul who gives us the key word 'faith'. Faith is a gift that God gave us. The salvation history from Abraham till today, the death and resurrection of the Lord, the miracles of the day, do reinforce and help us to discover the presence of God and his accompaniment in our personal life. The devil desires to sow in us despair and fear. Let us be vigilant and be a faithful guardian that he may not enter in us. We should never give him an opportunity to destroy our faith. Faith assures us peace and reconciliation and the devil wants to destroy everything.

The faith we have received from the prophets and apostles demand us to be reconciled with God permanently by reconciling us with our brothers and sisters. Let us be awake and vigilant that our heart may not be hardened by the events which affects us. The death and resurrection of the Lord is the source of our faith and our hope. God did not abandon His Son into the cross, yet He was left to die on the cross so that we might have life. It is precisely this act of God, his plan of salvation and His unconditional love that gives us this hope, and also the source of our faith.

Dear friends in Christ, I invite you to look at the Gospel of the day and contemplate these words that can nourish our hope. “Fear not”, “watch” ‘be at service’ that this Word of God shines our Christian life, be a guide for us and let it leads us towards the right path of the Lord. Amen

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Luc 9,28b-36.

Amen.

28 Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his countenance was altered, and his raiment became dazzling white. 30 And behold, two men talked with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, and when they wakened they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is well that we are here; let us make three booths, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah" -- not knowing what he said. 34 As he said this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!" 36 And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silence and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.

Commentary of the day

An anonymous Syrian writer of the 6th century
Homily wrongly attributed to Saint Ephrem (Migne)

"Among those standing here there are some who will not taste death before they have seen the Kingdom of God"

Our Lord Jesus Christ took Peter, James and John onto the mountain to show them the glory of his divinity and teach them to know he was the Redeemer of Israel, as he had demonstrated through the prophets. He wanted to prevent them being scandalized, also, by the sight of his freely accepted sufferings, which he would suffer for us in his human nature. For they knew him as man but were ignorant that he was God; they knew him as Mary’s son, a man dwelling in the world with them, but on the mountain he showed them he was Son of God and God himself.

They had seen him eat and drink, work and rest, grow weary and sleep, undergo fear even to great drops of sweat: all things that seemed to bear no relation to his divine nature and seemed to belong only to his humanity. This was why he took them onto the mountain, so that the Father might call him his Son and show them that he was truly his Son and that he was God. He took them onto the mountain and showed them his Kingdom before making known his sufferings, his power before his death, his glory before his maltreatment, and his honor before his shame. Thus, when he was taken and crucified, his apostles would know that it had not been through weakness but by consent and of his own free will, for the salvation of the world.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

The transfiguration of Jesus, by Jerome (347-420 AD)

"Do you wish to see the transfiguration of Jesus? Behold with me the Jesus of the Gospels. Let him be simply apprehended. There he is beheld both 'according to the flesh' and at the same time in his true divinity. He is beheld in the form of God according to our capacity for knowledge. This is how he was beheld by those who went up upon the lofty mountain to be apart with him. Meanwhile those who do not go up the mountain can still behold his works and hear his words, which are uplifting. It is before those who go up that Jesus is transfigured, and not to those below. When he is transfigured, his face shines as the sun, that he may be manifested to the children of light, who have put off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light (Romans 13:12). They are no longer the children of darkness or night but have become the children of day. They walk honestly as in the day. Being manifested, he will shine to them not simply as the sun but as he is demonstrated to be, the sun of righteousness."

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 16,24-28.

Scripture: Matthew 16:24-28

24 Then Jesus told his disciples, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life? 27 For the Son of man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay every man for what he has done. 28 Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom."

Commentary of the day

Vatican Council II
Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the modern world, Gaudium et Spes, § 37-38

Seeing the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom

Sacred Scripture teaches the human family what the experience of the ages confirms: that while human progress is a great advantage to man, it brings with it a strong temptation. For when the order of values is jumbled and bad is mixed with the good, individuals and groups pay heed solely to their own interests, and not to those of others. Thus it happens that the world ceases to be a place of true brotherhood. In our own day, the magnified power of humanity threatens to destroy the race itself…

Hence if anyone wants to know how this unhappy situation can be overcome, Christians will tell him that all human activity…must be purified and perfected by the power of Christ's cross and resurrection. For redeemed by Christ and made a new creature in the Holy Spirit, man is able to love the things themselves created by God, and ought to do so. He can receive them from God… Thus He entered the world's history as a perfect man, taking that history up into Himself and summarizing it.(11) He Himself revealed to us that "God is love" (1 John 4:8) and at the same time taught us that the new command of love was the basic law of human perfection and hence of to worlds transformation. To those, therefore, who believe in divine love, He gives assurance that the way of love lies open to men and that the effort to establish a universal brotherhood is not a hopeless one. He cautions them at the same time that this charity is not something to be reserved for important matters, but must be pursued chiefly in the ordinary circumstances of life. Undergoing death itself for all of us sinners,(12) He taught us by example that we too must shoulder that cross which the world and the flesh inflict upon those who search after peace and justice.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 16,13-23.

Gospel: Matthew 16:13-19

13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do men say that the Son of man is?" 14 And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." 15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"16 Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." 17 And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon BarJona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

The contemplation

I would like to invite you all to contemplate on the ‘Rock’ on which the Lord is going to construct His Church. Apparently this rock has become so weak that it allowed the evil spirit to enter in himself. The same rock will one day deny the abandoned and judged Christ before all. This very rock which is supposed to bring all Apostles together around the master, will lead them into sea, for fishing throughout the night for nothing. So strange that the Lord found a rock in this weak person, very weak in every aspect of life, except one, ‘his love for the master’. It is certainly the ‘rock’, because God is active and working in him. The solidity is not only in the intelligence and discernment, but also in the heart and sprit that the Lord accords more importance. It is in this love for Christ and in the radical following of Him that Jesus gives the KEY of heaven to Peter. This is the wounded peter who has experienced the forgiveness of the Lord, the divine mercy in every aspect of His faith journey and will certainly understand the importance of forgiveness. It is on this ‘Rock’ that Jesus wishes to establish His Church.

The second step of our meditation is in fact the first. All these dialogue has its root in the identification of Christ and our personal relationship with God. Who is this God for us? The answer to this question will model our life and form our being. Jesus is inviting each and every one of us to have such a personal relationship with Him, as He himself with the Father. In this wonderful relationship we will discover the will of the Father, the very Cross that Jesus has accepted. It’s all happened in the deep love for the Father. It is in this very love that Jesus wished to construct His Church. It is in this very love that our relationship with God is established. All those who have experienced this love, don’t hesitate to take the Cross of Jesus, which is in fact our own cross and also the crosses of others. Just like Jesus, we will be given the courage and the grace necessary to carry this Cross and we will do it with joy.

Commentary of the day

Saint John Chrysostom (c.345-407), priest at Antioch then Bishop of Constantinople, Doctor of the Church
Sermon on Saint Peter and Saint Elijah, 1 ; PG 50, 727

"On this rock I will build my Church"

Peter was to receive the keys of the Church, even more the keys of heaven. The government of a large number of people was to be entrusted to him… If Peter, with his tendency to severity, had remained without sin, how could he have given evidence of mercy for his disciples? However, according to the design of divine grace he fell into sin such that, after he himself had gained experience of his wretchedness, he might show kindness to others.

Now consider well : the one who yielded to sin was Peter himself, chief of apostles, firm foundation, indestructible rock, guide of the Church, impregnable harbor, indestructible tower, who had said to Christ: “Even if I have to die with you, I will not deny you” (Mt 26:35), he who confessed the truth by a divine revelation: “You are the Christ, Son of the living God.”

Now the gospel relates that, on the very night Christ was betrayed… a young girl said to Peter: “You, too, were with that man yesterday” and Peter answered: “I do not know the man” (Mt 26:69f.)… He, the column, the rampart, evades the suspicions of a woman… Jesus looked at him… Peter understood, repented of his sin and began to weep. And at that moment the merciful Lord granted him pardon…

Peter fell into sin so that awareness of his error and of the Lord’s forgiveness would lead him to forgive others out of love. Thus he fulfilled a providential design conforming to God’s way of acting. Peter, to whom the Church was to be entrusted, pillar of the churches (Gal 2:9), harbor of faith, who would teach the whole world, shows himself to be weak and a sinner. Indeed, truly, this was so that he might find in his own weakness a motive for exercising his goodness towards others.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 15,21-28.

Scripture: Matthew 15:21-28

21 And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon." 23 But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, "Send her away, for she is crying after us." 24 He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." 25 But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." 26 And he answered, "It is not fair to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." 27 She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." 28 Then Jesus answered her, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire." And her daughter was healed instantly.

Commentary of the day

Saint John Chrysostom (c.345-407), priest at Antioch then Bishop of Constantinople, Doctor of the Church
Homily 52, 1-3 on Saint Matthew’s Gospel

The power of persevering prayer

When one might have expected she would depart in utter despair, at that very moment the Canaanite woman drew nearer and worshiped, saying, "Lord, help me!"... “What is this, O woman? Did you not hear him saying: ‘I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel’?” "I heard," she says, "but he is the Lord himself…"

This was Christ's intent in putting her off, for he knew she would say this; this is the reason he denied her wish, that she might exhibit her deep faith... So his words were not spoken in insult, but to call forth and reveal the treasure laid up within her.

But I ask you: together with her faith, see also her humility. For he had called the Jews "children," but she was not satisfied with this, but called them "masters;" so far was she from grieving at the praises of others. "The dogs also," she says, "eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters."... And for this she became a child. What then does Christ say? "O woman, great is your faith." This is the reason he forestalled her, that he might praise her faith aloud, that he might crown this woman by saying: "Let it be done for you as you wish."... Do you see how this woman contributed not a little to the healing of her daughter? For Christ did not say, "Let your little daughter be healed," but, "Great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish."... Mark how, where the apostles had failed and had not gained anything, this woman had success. So great a thing is perseverance in prayer.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 14,22-36.

Scripture: Matthew 14:22-36 [alternate passage: Matthew 15:1-2, 10-14]

22 Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. 27 But immediately he spoke to them, saying, "Take heart, it is I; have no fear." 28 And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water." 29 He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; 30 but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "O man of little faith, why did you doubt?" 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." 34 And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent round to all that region and brought to him all that were sick, 36 and besought him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment; and as many as touched it were made well.

Contemplation

I would like to propose to you all ‘walking on the sea’ for our contemplation. This walking on the sea has lot of spiritual richness for our contemplation. First of all, Jesus is walking on a troubled sea. Sea by its very nature in the biblical language represent the house of devil and darkness. Jesus’ walking on this sea shows that He has mastered all these and He is beyond of such troubles. Before contemplating on this act, this very act will lead us to the source, the prayer. Jesus was alone in prayer with the Father. This solitude which is privileged to the Father creates an ambiance of silence where He could listen without any distraction the Word of the Father and His will. This was the source and the Joy of Jesus.

If Jesus is inviting us, just like Peter was invited, it is not in the troubled water, rather into the victorious moment of life, where we are privileged to be with Him, as He is with the Father. This invitation is to taste the goodness of God, to see very closely how much God loves us, and experience in the very deep of our existence the divine mercy. It is to this divine encounter that Jesus has invited Peter and raised Him when he failed to persevere.

The culmination of the encounter ends with a perfect adoration and worship, which is also a fruit our contemplation. This worship is only possible in its perfection, if God invites us and raises. It’s not in our merit or good work, rather a mere gift that God choses to those who desire to participate in His holiness. Justly, God has accorded to Peter to raise and be liberated from the boat on which he was depending and surrender fully to Jesus, by crying, ‘Lord Save me’.

Walking on water, passing through fire

Intellectual knowledge does not free us from fear. But those who walk in faith are wholly free. Such as these, as true children of God, can make free use of each thing. Those who are smitten with love for this faith make use of all the elements of creation as God does himself. For faith has the power to make a new creature after God’s likeness…

Intellectual knowledge cannot do anything without a material foundation; it doesn’t have the courage to carry out what it has not been given to nature to do. The body is unable to walk on the surface of water; those who draw near fire are burnt. Consequently mere understanding is set on its guard and never allows itself to go beyond its natural limits. But faith has the power to go even further and declares: “When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, I will be with you; and the waters will not swallow you up” (Is 43:2 alt.). Faith often carries out such things in the sight of all creation. If it had been given to the mind to attempt to do the same things, it would never have dared.

Many have entered the flames through faith…, they have passed through fire whole and sound and walked on the sea as though on dry land. All these things were above nature and contrary to the ways of mere intellectual knowledge. They demonstrated how empty this latter was in all its ways and laws. Do you see how the mind observes the conditions set by nature? And do you see how faith goes its own way as it proceeds at a higher level than nature?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 14,13-21.

Scripture: Matthew 14:13-21

13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a lonely place apart. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14 As he went ashore he saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. 15 When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." 16 Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." 17 They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." 18 And he said, "Bring them here to me." 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

"He broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds"

The simplicity of our life of contemplation makes us see the face of God in everything, everyone and everywhere, all the time. His hand in all that happens makes us do all that we do – whether we think, study, work, speak, eat, or take our rest – in Jesus, with Jesus, for Jesus and to Jesus, under the loving gaze of the Father, being totally available to Him in any form He may come to us.

I am deeply impressed by the fact that before explaining the Word of God, before presenting to the crowds the eight beatitudes, Jesus had compassion on them and gave them food. Only then did He begin to teach them.

Love Jesus generously. Love him trustfully, without looking back and without fear. Give yourself fully to Jesus, He will use you to accomplish great things on the condition that you believe much more in His love than in your weakness. Believe in Him, trust in Him with a blind and absolute confidence because He is Jesus. Believe that Jesus and Jesus alone is life, and sanctity is nothing else but that same Jesus intimately living in you; then His hand will be free with you.
