Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 20,1-16a.

Scripture: Matthew 20:1-16

1 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2 After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place; 4 and to them he said, `You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.' So they went. 5 Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing; and he said to them, `Why do you stand here idle all day?' 7 They said to him, `Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, `You go into the vineyard too.' 8 And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, `Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.' 9 And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius.

The contemplation

Though this story may by appearance be an act of injustice by giving everyone, even to those who have worked little with the same salary, but in truth the owner is filled with love and compassion. This story however doesn’t say exactly what kind of work has been entrusted to the last comers nor the quality of the completion of the work. Thus all those who stand against the master do it just without any coherence with the Truth, and simply in their ignorance. Many at times when we make a complaint against God that He is silent, that He doesn’t care about us, or He doesn’t heed our prayers, we all do it in our ignorance without having full truth before us.

The second point to meditate is the divine justice. The divine justice doesn’t correspond to what we merit, rather what we need. Our desire to have more than what we need, is itself is injustice, stealing what belongs to others. God doesn’t look what we desire, rather what we need.

We may have higher expectations, but we should justify that by our needs. The expectations should be coherent to what we have agreed upon and what the just way of the agreement is supposed to be. Here neither the owner went against what is agreed upon nor was the agreement against the due humanly established justice. All that is done, is simply a gesture of generosity, or may be what it was agreed by the very conscience of the owner, upon seeing the need of the last comer. There is simply a visible jealousy and anger, without any foundation or raison.

The most important point to be contemplated is the evil conscience which sees even in an act of pure generosity what is evil and bad, for us in this story ‘injustice’. The real injustice is standing against the owner after duly agreed upon a contract. The owner didn’t go back in what he has said, rather he was generous to someone who was in need of this generosity. Let us not compare of what others have or haven’t, rather be with reconnaissance of what we have received. The evil spirit may not help us to see what we have received, because then our life will be filled with gratitude and joy. It will rather divert us towards what we don’t have or haven’t received, thus we will end up in fighting with God, and in consequence there will be discontentment and sadness. Let us be watchful of this evil spirit which promotes in us the wickedness in the name doing good and justice for us, just like in this story instead of gratitude and generosity, it presents falsified injustice.

Commentary of the day

Saint Gregory the Great (c.540-604), Pope, Doctor of the Church
Homilies on the Gospel, no.19 (©Cistercian studies no.123)

The workers in the Lord's vineyard

The kingdom of heaven is said to be like a householder who hired workmen to cultivate his vineyard. Who better can we take to be the householder than our Creator, who rules over those he created, and governs his elect in the world in the same way as a master does those subject to him in his house? He has a vineyard, that is to say the universal Church, which has brought forth many saints as so many branches, from righteous Abel up to the last of the elect who will be born at the end of the world.

The householder hired workmen to cultivate his vineyard, in the morning, and at the third, sixth, ninth and eleventh hours, since preachers do not cease to preach for the instruction of the faithful from the beginning of this world up to its end. The morning indeed was from Adam to the time of Noah, the third hour from the time of Noah to the time of Abraham, the sixth from the time of Abraham to the time of Moses, the ninth from the time of Moses to the coming of the Lord; and the eleventh is from the coming of the Lord to the end of the world. In this period the holy apostles, who received a full reward even though they came late, have been sent as preachers.

At no time, then, did the Lord cease sending his people workmen to instruct them, to cultivate his vineyard, as it were. When he first cultivated his people through the patriarchs, and later through the teachers of the law, and then through the prophets, and at last through the apostles, he labored at the cultivation of his vineyard as if by his workmen. Everyone, though, who had the right faith with good works, in whatever capacity or measure, was a workman in his vineyard.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 19,23-30.

23 And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly, I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." 25 When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?" 26 But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." 27 Then Peter said in reply, "Lo, we have left everything and followed you. What then shall we have?" 28 Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. 30 But many that are first will be last, and the last first.

Commentary of the day

Saint Peter Damian (1007-1072), hermit then Bishop, Doctor of the Church
Sermon 9, PL 144, 549-553

To give up everything and follow Christ

It is a great thing, in truth, to “give up everything”, but greater “to follow Christ”, for, as we learn in books, many people gave up everything but did not follow Christ. Following Christ is our task, our work, in that consists the main part of man’s salvation, but we cannot follow Christ if we do not leave behind everything which hinders us. Because “like an athlete he joyfully runs his course” (Ps 19:6) and no one can follow him laden down with a burden.

Peter said, “We have given up everything”, not only worldly goods, but also the desires of our heart. For those who remain attached, even just to their own life, have not given up everything. Moreover, it’s no good leaving everything behind except one’s self, for there is no burden heavier than our ego. What tyrant is crueler, what master more pitiless for man than his own will? ... Consequently, we must give up our possessions and our own will, if we want to follow him who had “nowhere to rest his head” (Lk 9:58) and who came “not to do his own will but the will of the one who sent him” (Jn 6:38).

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Luc 1,39-56.

Amen.

39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord."

Commentary of the day

Saint John Damascene (c.675-749), monk, theologian, Doctor of the Church
Sermon I on the Dormition, 11-14 (SC 80, p. 111f. alt.)

The Virgin Mary, “image of the Church to come... who guides and sustains your people’s hope” (Preface)

O Mother of God, ever virgin, your holy departure from this world is in truth a way and an entry into the dwelling place of God. Leaving this material world, you enter into “a better country” (Heb 11:16) where the heavenly powers greet you with sacred canticles and joyous praise, saying: “Who is this most pure creature who rises up, shining like the dawn, beautiful as the moon, radiant as the sun?” (Sg 8:5; 6:10)… “The king has brought you into his chambers” (Sg 1:4) and angels magnify her who, according to God’s design, is their true mother, by nature and grace, of their very Lord…

The apostles bore your stainless body, the true Ark of the Covenant, and laid it in its holy tomb. And there, as though across another Jordan, you came to the real Land of promise, I might even say to the “Jerusalem above”, mother of believers (Gal 4:26), of which God is the architect and builder. Your soul most certainly “did not go down into the netherworld, nor has your flesh itself experienced corruption” (Ps 15[16]:10; Acts 2:31). Your pure and spotless body was not left within the earth but you, Queen, Sovereign, Lady, Mother of God, true Godbearer, have been lifted to the dwellings of the heavenly Kingdom…

We approach you, O our Queen, Mother of God and Virgin, on this day; we turn our souls towards the hope you represent for us… We wish to honor you with “psalms, hymns and spiritual songs” (Eph 5:19). In thus honoring the servant we express our dedication to our common Lord… Cast your eyes upon us, O Queen, mother of our kind Sovereign; guide our way into the calm harbor of God’s good will.

Le 14 Août

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Luc 12,49-53.

Car désormais cinq personnes de la même famille seront divisées : trois contre deux et deux contre trois ;

Que notre ‘oui’ soit ‘oui’ et notre ‘no’ soit ‘no’.

» (Jn 19,30)

Scripture: Luke 12:49-53

49 "I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled! 50 I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how I am constrained until it is accomplished! 51 Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division; 52 for henceforth in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three; 53 they will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against her mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."

Homily

At first glance, the readings for this Sunday are quite confusing, especially the Gospel of the day. Jesus speaks of fire and division and we would like to avoid in our daily life. How can the Lord of peace, who said happy the peace makers, could say that he desire the fire? And how can the Lord who prayed that all be one as He is with the Father desire for a division, even in the family? What is this fire that Jesus wishes? What is this division that Jesus desires?

Fire has two main functions; a burning and destroying, and one that purifies and transforms. Jesus wants this fire destroys evil, the source of all sin, as individualism and selfishness, hatred and revenge, etc. He strongly wants his fire of love, the fire of the Holy Spirit transforms humanity that this world be able to forgive and love as God loves and forgives us. This fire purifies our society with the richness of the diversity and creates the unity that brings all of us together. God wants the world to be inflamed by love and mercy. The very same fire that gave courage to the Apostles, give us grace to announce the joy of the gospel and the joy of being Christians.

The proposal of Jesus arouses in us the question without thinking, "why he still sows division and separation in this world that is so weakened by violence and revenge? I think it is however necessary that the world discovers the truth. That our 'yes' be 'yes' and our 'no' be 'no'. The division is certainly a way to take the position. It must be clear that I am the Lord. A bad friend can never become God's friend. The division helps us to discover our position before the truth. It not only helps us to discover the truth and also to identify the evil which hides behind the mask of being good.

Given this truth, there is no mom and dad, or brother and sister. Outward appearances should be broken and the inner truth should be supported. It’s no more my emotions and sentiments which connects me affectively, rather the truth of love and forgiveness which orients my decision. Fire and division that the Lord offers us, we will not do wrong, rather good to us and certainly enrich us. This fire of love, the fire of the Holy Spirit, will destroy the evil in us, it will purify and transform us. This division and separation will help us to view the world with a look of love and mercy, and will gather together the people of God, holy and innocent. Certainly the separation of sheep and goats, the wheat and drunk will help us to grow in faith and in the Lord.

The life of the prophet Jeremiah assures us that our firm 'yes' to the Lord and clear 'no' to evil, save us. God will never abandon his friends. Like Jeremiah, who was saved by the Lord, He will save us. My friends, with the psalmist, let us pray to the Father. I am poor and needy, but the Lord thinks of me. You are my help and my deliverer; my God, do not delay! Lord, come quickly to my rescue. Amen.

Commentary of the day

Denis the Carthusian (1402 - 1471), monk
Commentary on the Gospel of Luke, 12: 72-74

To light in human hearts the fire of God's love

“I have come to set the earth on fire”; I came down from the heights of heaven and, by the mystery of my Incarnation, I made myself manifest in order to light in human hearts the fire of divine love; “and how I wish it were already blazing!”, that is to say, how I wish that it might take hold and become a flame activated by the Holy Spirit, bringing forth abundantly in acts of kindness!

Christ then reveals that he will undergo death on the cross before the fire of this love ignites in humanity. It is, indeed, the most holy Passion of Christ which merited such a great gift for humanity, and it is above all the memory of his Passion which lights a flame in faithful hearts. “I must be baptized”, in other words: “It falls to me and it is reserved to me by a divine decree to receive a baptism of blood, to bathe and plunge as if in water in my blood shed on the cross to redeem the whole world; “and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished!”, in other words until my Passion is completed and I can say: “It is finished!” (Jn 19:30)

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 19,13-15.

Scripture: Matthew 19:13-15

13 Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people; 14 but Jesus said, "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven." 15 And he laid his hands on them and went away.

The contemplation

What is the relation between today’s first reading and the gospel? How do we interpret the psalm of the day? For me, it is important that we mediate on the image of ‘man’, the ideal man that God looks for. Certainly, it is the man who knows God and His love for him. It is the man who seeks the wisdom of God and puts his energy and soul to accomplish the will of the Father. It is the man who doesn’t allow himself to be animated by simply feelings, emotions, taste and appearance, but allows himself to be animated by the Truth, the Truth of God. Certainly, he is the one who listens the Word of God and put everything heard from the Lord in practice.

Thus the sincere prayer of the psalmist become his own prayer. He prays to God that he may be helped by the Lord to keep his thoughts and act pure in front of God. He prays with confidence that this God of love will listen to him. This is the exact attitude of a child towards the father. God wishes that we develop such attitude with Him and taste by ourselves how much He is humble and soft towards us. Just like the child who allows the father to animate and decide for him, it is important as children of God that we too allow ourselves be animated by the Holy Spirit. It is in this Spirit filled animation that we can find the perfect happiness. The Kingdom of God is one such place and children live in this joy. Shall we reborn once again as this child to live in this perfect happiness? If we desire to be, then the conversion is the first and the right step to be taken. Are we ready?

Commentary of the day

Saint Maximus of Turin (?-c.420), Bishop
Homily 58 ; PL 57, 363

“Like this little child”

The Lord said to the apostles, who were already adult and mature: “Unless you turn and become like this little child, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven” (Mt 18:3&4)… He urges them to rediscover their childhood… in order that they might be born again to innocence of heart: “No one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and spirit” (Jn 3:5).

“Unless you turn and become like this little child”: he does not say “these children” but “this child”, he only chooses one, only suggests one. And who is this child whom he puts forward as an example to his disciples? I don’t think it was a child of one of the people, one of the crowd, who offers an example of holiness to the apostles on behalf of the whole world. No, I don’t think this child comes from the people but from heaven. This is a question of that child from heaven of whom the prophet Isaiah speaks: “A child is born to us, a son is given us” (9:5). This is the innocent child, incapable of meeting insult with insult or blows with blows and who – better still – prays for his enemies even during his agony: “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do” (Lk 23:34)., The Lord overflows in this way, in his unfathomable grace, out of the innocence of heart that nature gives to children. He is that child who asks little ones to imitate and follow him.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 19,3-12.

Scripture: Matthew 19:3-12

3 And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?" 4 He answered, "Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, `For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder." 7 They said to him, "Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?" 8 He said to them, "For your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another, commits adultery." 10 The disciples said to him, "If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is not expedient to marry." 11 But he said to them, "Not all men can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. 12 For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to receive this, let him receive it."

The contemplation

I invite you all to contemplate on the project of God, right from the creation. God created man-women together and He desired that they become one. Union or unity is the will of the Father. Just like Jesus is united with the Father, Father in Him, God wishs that in all man-woman relationship in a married status that we resemble this Trinitarian love and union.

All the separations are painful, short or longer. God doesn’t desire that we get dispersed or separated in our conjugal love and affection for each other. Though many of are called to married life, to live together, and share the divine love, some are called to celibate life and to these people God has given them the grace to overcome human desires and attach themselves to divine realities. Thus all are not called to this status of life.

Since God desires that man and woman live together in a conjugal relationship, it is important that we consult God before choosing someone as our partner. When this conjugal life is jeopardised by different causes, either internal or external, it is important that we go once again to God for a deeper consultation and discernment. We should discern in front God and in His wisdom. Just like Jesus who allowed the Holy Spirit to animate the events of salvation, even to the temptation, we should allow the same Holy Spirit to animate our life. If our life is animated by the Holy Spirit and if we learn to listen to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, put in to action all that He says to us, then we will have a happy life, a life that God desires for us.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 18,21-35.19,1.

A Simple Path (trad.

Scripture: Matthew 18:21-19:1

21 Then Peter came up and said to him, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?" 22 Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven.23 "Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents; 25 and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, `Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' 27 And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.

The contemplation

In life everything can’t be counted or measured to be returned or reciprocated. Love and forgiveness is one such. Either you love or you don’t love, you forgive or you don’t. There is no middle way. Now why should I forgive, particularly with a human out-look and when God asks me to forgive what is His priority?, me or the other?

Let us contemplate these question with God. Humanly speaking, we are social animal and this forgiveness is the best way to express our unconditional love for our brothers and sisters. Since love can’t be commercialised or bought, we are forced to look it within ourselves, which the Lord has already put in to us. Thus humanly when we look into love or forgiveness within ourselves for its source, we are directly oriented towards God, because in Him and through Him we receive the source of love and God has expressed His love for us by forgiving us. God so loved us that He has sent His only begotten Son, not to judge us, rather through His love and forgiveness, particularly through His death and resurrection, that we may be saved. A human being par excellence will act in a divine manner, because being human is being divine.

The second point to contemplate is, the question of justice and why God has asked us to forgive others. Though apparently looks that is against justice, and if we learn to look life in its fullness, all the insult and injustice that we had to undergo, had in fact addressed to God and the God who lives in us is more hurt of our pain and every moment of our suffering, God in silence suffers with us and in us. When this God has forgiven the other, why should we block it? The second question is, if God asks us to forgive us, it is not for the wellbeing of the other, who is going to benefit from this pardon, rather, it is for the well-being of ourselves. If we forgive others, then we will be liberated from anger and enmity, anxiety and fear, liberated from emotion and sensation, but rooted in Truth, thus be able to live our life fully in inner peace and joy. God wishes that we live in peace and Joy and that this joy may be complete and perfect. This peace is guaranteed easily through forgiveness. This forgiveness assures us joy. It is not only for the well-being of the other, rather it is essentially for the well-being of ourselves.

Commentary of the day

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta (1910-1997), founder of the Missionary Sisters of Charity
A Simple Path

“Forgive our sins as we also forgive those who sin against us” (Lk 11:4)

Every night before you go to bed you must make an examination of conscience (because you don't know if you will be alive in the morning!). Whatever is troubling you, or whatever wrong you may have done, you need to repair it. For example, if you have stolen something, then try to give it back. If you have hurt somebody, try to make up to that person; do it directly. If you cannot make up like that, at least then make up with God by saying, "I'm very sorry." This is important because just as we have acts of love, we also must have acts of contrition. You could say, "Lord, I'm sorry for having offended you and I promise you I will try not to offend you again," something like this. It feels good to be free of burdens, to have a clean heart. Remember that God is merciful, He is the merciful father to us all. We are His children and He will forgive and forget if we remember to do so.

Examine your heart first, though, to see if there is any lack of forgiveness of others still inside, because how can we ask God for forgiveness if we cannot forgive others? Remember, if you truly repent, if you really mean it with a clean heart, you will be absolved in God’s eyes.He will forgive you if you truly confess to Him. So pray to be able to forgive those who have hurt you or whom you don’t like, and forgive as you have been forgiven.

Si quelqu’un me sert, mon Père l’honorera.

Saint Maxime de Turin (?-v. 420), évêque
Sermon 40 (trad. coll.

Scripture: John 12:24-26 (alternate reading: Matthew 18:15-20)

24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If any one serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there shall my servant be also; if any one serves me, the Father will honor him.

Saint Maximus of Turin (?-c.420), Bishop
Sermon 40 (Migne 1996, p. 178 rev.)

Saint Lawrence, like a seed thrown on the ground

At first glance a mustard seed appears small, ordinary and unimportant ; it has no taste, gives off no smell, gives no cause for presuming any sweetness. But when it is crushed then it spreads abroad its odor and reveals its strength, it has a taste like flame and burns with such strength that we are astonished to find so great a fire in so little a seed… Christian faith, in the same way, seems at first sight to be small, ordinary and weak; it does not show its power nor display its influence. But when crushed by various trials, it demonstrates its vigor, makes its energy burst forth, breathes out the flames of its faith in the Lord. The divine fire makes it quiver with such ardor that, even as it is burning, it warms those who share it, as Cleophas and his companion said in the holy Gospel while the Lord was conversing with them after his passion: “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?” (Lk 24:32)…

We might compare Saint Lawrence to a mustard seed: crushed with numerous tortures he merited the grace of an outstanding martyr in the sight of all the world. While he was yet dwelling in his body he was humble, ignored, ordinary; after he had been tortured, torn apart and burned, he shed on all the faithful throughout the world the good odor of his nobility of soul… Seen from without, this martyr was burning in the flames of a cruel tyrant, but a greater flame, that of the love of Christ, was consuming him from within. An impious king may well have piled on the wood and lit even larger fires but Saint Lawrence, in the fervor of his love, no longer felt those flames… No earthly suffering had mastery over him any longer: his soul already dwelt in heaven.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 25,1-13.

Scripture: Matthew 18:1-5, 10, 12-14

1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" 2 And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them, 3 and said, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 "Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me; 10 "See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.12 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? 13 And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. 14 So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

Homily for the canonization of St Teresa-Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein), 11/10/98 (trans. ©Libreria vaticana editrice)

“The Bridegroom is here! Go out to meet him.”

Dear brothers and sisters! Because she was Jewish, Edith Stein was taken with her sister Rosa and many other Catholic Jews from the Netherlands to the concentration camp in Auschwitz, where she died with them in the gas chambers. Today we remember them all with deep respect. A few days before her deportation, the woman religious had dismissed the question about a possible rescue: “Do not do it! Why should I be spared? Is it not right that I should gain no advantage from my Baptism? If I cannot share the lot of my brothers and sisters, my life, in a certain sense, is destroyed”.

From now on, as we celebrate the memory of this new saint from year to year, we must also remember the Shoah, that cruel plan to exterminate a people — a plan to which millions of our Jewish brothers and sisters fell victim. May the Lord let his face shine upon them and grant them peace (cf. Nm 6:25f.). For the love of God and man, once again I raise an anguished cry: May such criminal deeds never be repeated against any ethnic group, against any race, in any corner of this world! It is a cry to everyone: to all people of goodwill; to all who believe in the Just and Eternal God; to all who know they are joined to Christ, the Word of God made man. We must all stand together: human dignity is at stake. There is only one human family.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Matthieu 17,22-27.

Comme ils étaient réunis en Galilée, Jésus leur dit : « Le Fils de l’homme va être livré aux mains des hommes ;

Scripture: Matthew 17:22-27

22 As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, 23 and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day." And they were greatly distressed.

24 When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the half-shekel tax went up to Peter and said, "Does not your teacher pay the tax?" 25 He said, "Yes." And when he came home, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tribute? From their sons or from others?" 26 And when he said, "From others," Jesus said to him, "Then the sons are free. 27 However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook, and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel; take that and give it to them for me and for yourself."

The contemplation

We are all children of God, the creator of this universe. Thus by our nature we are free and liberated people. However in our ignorance we have become slave to money, power and glory. In Jesus, God has liberated us from all these slavery which have dominated this world without any remedy. In Jesus we are born again and find the perfect remedy to be saved, not in arrogance but in humility and simplicity. It is in this simplicity of life and the chosen poverty that Jesus has agreed to pay the tax, though they didn’t merit this tax, because he was the son of the soil. Many of us don’t understand the richness of this poverty and we desire sadly to be rich by possessing very little. Only free children can adopt to new situation and events, and others will be blocked by their ideas and inclinations. Do we really feel free, free from power, glory and wealth which is the cause of our sins? Do we feel the need to be liberated from our sins?

Commentary of the day

Saint Pacian of Barcelona (?-c.390), Bishop
Homily on Baptism, 7

Set free by the Son of Man who was handed over into the hands of men

All peoples have been set free from the powers that held them captive by our Lord Jesus Christ. He it is – yes, he! – who has redeemed us. As the apostle Paul says: “Having forgiven all our transgressions, obliterating the bond against us, nailing it to the cross, he despoiled the principalities and powers, he made a public spectacle of them, leading them away in triumph,” (Col 2,13-15). He has set the captives free and broken our bonds, as David said: “The Lord secures justice for the oppressed; the Lord sets captives free; the Lord gives sight to the blind.” And again: “You have loosed my bonds; to you I will offer sacrifice of thanksgiving,” (Pss. 146[145],7-8; 116[115].16-17).

Yes, we have been released from our bonds, those of us who have been brought together at the Lord's call by the sacrament of baptism...; we have been set free by the blood of Christ and the invocation of his name... And so, my beloved, we were washed by the waters of baptism once for all; once for all we were set free; once for all we were welcomed into the undying Kingdom. Once for all, “Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered,” (Ps32[31].1; Rom 4,7). Bravely hold fast to what you have received; keep it to your own happiness; sin no more. From henceforth, keep yourselves pure and without fault for the day of the Lord.
