Gospel text

(Lk 7,31-35):

The Lord said, «What comparison can I use for this people? What are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace, about whom their companions complain: ‘We piped you a tune and you wouldn't dance; we sang funeral songs and you wouldn't cry’. Remember John: he didn't eat bread or drink wine, and you said: ‘He has an evil spirit’. Next came the Son of Man, eating and drinking, and you say: ‘Look, a glutton for food and wine, a friend of tax collectors and sinners’. But the children of Wisdom always recognize her work».

The Application

Jesus is inviting us to be proactive than reactive. If there is something that should motivate us in all our personal and interpersonal relationship, should the divine love which obliges us to love all, as our brothers and sisters. Our actions are not motivated by another action, rather inspired in and through God’s love.

This unconditional love is possible, only if we are fully immerged in Faith, particularly being aware of God’s love for us. It is this same love for God, that gives us the hope, demands us to be charitable and nourishes our faith in God.

If we continue to be reactive, we may act childish way, without knowing and assuming the consequences of our acts. When things don’t go on, as we have expected, we may be tempted to judge others and look outside of us than doing a sincere examination of conscience, searching for answers inside. Since God resides in our heart, it’s better to have an inward looking than an outward searching.

Action of the day: Try to identify the goodness in everyone.

«What comparison can I use for this people?»

Fr. Xavier SERRA i Permanyer

Today, Jesus confirms the hardness of heart of the people of his time, at least, as far as the Pharisees are concerned, so self-assured that nobody can convert them. They do not alter their mind not even before John the Baptist, «he didn't eat bread or drink wine» (Lk 7:33), and accuse him of having an evil spirit; they do not change either before the Son of Man, «eating and drinking», and they say «Look, a glutton for food and wine», and «a friend of tax collectors and sinners» (Lk 7:34). Their pride and arrogance are hiding behind these accusations: nobody is to teach them anything; they do not accept God, but they custom-make their own God, a God that would not move them from their convenience, privileges and involvement.

We are also running this risk. How often do we criticize everything: whether the Church says so, or because she has said that, or even when she says just the contrary...; and we could just as well find all sort of faults when referring to God or to others. In actual fact, however, and perhaps unconsciously, we want to justify our laziness and lack of ambition for a true conversion, to excuse our own convenience and lack of flexibility. St. Bernard says: «What is more logic than acknowledging our own wounds and scars, especially when one shields them so they are not seen? From this we may infer that, ultimately, even if somebody else discovers them, we might stubbornly defend that they are not wounds, and leave our heart abandoned to deceiving words».

We must let the Word of God to reach our heart and convert us, transforming us with its strength. But first, we must request the gift of humility. Only the humble souls are able to receive the grace of God and, therefore, let Him come close to us, since as “publicans” and “sinners” that we are we need him to heal us. ¡Woe betide those who claim that they do not need a doctor! The worst for any diseased is to believe he is healthy, because then the sickness will progress and he will never recover his health. We are all sick to death, and only Christ can save us, whether we realize it or not. Let us thank our Saviour, and let us welcome him as such!

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 7,31-35):

Abbé Xavier SERRA i Permanyer

(Sabadell, Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Lk 2,33-35):

The father of Jesus and his mother wondered at what was said about the child. Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother, «See him; He will be for the rise or fall of the multitudes of Israel. He shall stand as a sign of contradiction, while a sword will pierce your own soul. Then the secret thoughts of many may be brought to light».

The Application

Immediately after the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, the Church proposes yet another feast of the Virgin Mary, which helps us to accept our daily crosses and to know how to live with them.  A life without cross would be a boring affaire. Here is your mother, with a heart pierced by vengeance and wickedness of the humanity, is presented to us, so that she may be our school of life. Mary knew how to bear everything and will offer her Son, for the salvation of the world, becoming the true collaborator with her Son by accepting the offering of her son, for the accomplishment of the divine will. Who can bear to see the death of her own son to be punished unjustly, without any mercy, after accomplishing numerous miracles? She could do this for Her son, and through her son, to the whole humanity. For this reason, in her humanity and in her maternal love, she becomes for the Church of the day, our model to imitate, especially her perseverance.

Action of the day: Be with the suffering people.

«A sword will pierce your own soul»

Fr. Josep Mª SOLER OSB

Abbot of Montserrat (Barcelona, Spain)

Today, in the celebration of the feast of our Lady of Sorrows, we hear the most unspeakable words in the mouth of old Simeon: «And a sword will pierce your own soul» (Lk 2:35). From its context, we can assert this declaration does not only concern Jesus Christ's passion, but his missionary work, that will stir up the division of the people of Israel, and therefore, a painful grief in Mary's heart. All along Jesus' public life, the Virgin Mary will experience great sufferings upon seeing Jesus rebuked and threatened with death by the city authorities.

As the rest of Jesus' disciples, Mary has to learn to place her family relations in a different context altogether. She must also leave her Son because of the Gospel (cf. Mt 19:29), and have to learn not to appraise the Christ for his flesh, despite the fact He is flesh of her flesh. She is to crucify also her flesh (cf. Gal 5:24) to be able to transform herself into the image of Jesus Christ. But the topmost peak of her suffering, where she lives the cross more deeply, is Jesus' crucifixion and death.

Also in her pain, Mary is the model of perseverance of the evangelic doctrine while sharing Christ's suffering through her patience (cf. Rule of St. Benedict, Prologue 50). She has done it all her life, and most than all, while in the Calvary. There she becomes the prototype and model for all Christians. Because she has been so closely linked to Christ's death, she is linked afterwards to his resurrection too (cf. Rm 6:5). In her excruciating pain, Mary's perseverance to abide by the Father's will, deserved her a new irradiation in benefit of the Church and of Mankind. Mary precedes us and helps us to follow Christ in our way of faith. And the Holy Spirit leads us to share with her this great adventure.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 2,33-35):

Gospel text

(Jn 3,13-17):

Jesus said to Nicodemus, «No one has ever gone up to heaven except the one who came from heaven, the Son of Man. As Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. Yes, God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but may have eternal life. God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world; instead, through him the world is to be saved».

The Application

This is one of my favorite texts for funeral celebrations, because it brings so much consolation and courage, that man before this glorious Cross can easily put all his sufferings into perspective.

In the Cross we see the MAN, the man so weakened physically, yet able to forgive in his humanity, and in his divinity has saved the one who will pierce Him. Since we share the same humanity, that of Jesus, we can, in the same humanity, participate, with our weaknesses and limitations, in the salvation brought to humanity, by the same glorious Cross.

It is in this glorious Cross, in the suffering humanity of Jesus, that God has chosen to express his love for humanity. It is in Him that God saved us. Since this Cross has saved us, we assume it in our daily life, and with it any kind of cross that we would not want to assume. Just like in the Cross of Christ we find the way that will lead us to the resurrection and if we learn to assume our daily crosses courageously, they are able to show us the way to resurrection. I wish you a happy feast.

Action of the day : Learn the fruit of Cross and assume it today.

«So that whoever believes in him may have eternal life»

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench

(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, the Gospel is a prophecy, that is, a glance into the mirror of reality that plunges us in its truth, far beyond what our own senses tell us: the Cross, the Holy Cross of Jesus Christ is the Saviour's Throne. That is why Jesus asserts, «the Son of man must be lifted up» (Jn 3:14).

We do know the Cross was the most ignominious and heinous torture of its time. To exalt the Holy Cross would therefore be some sort of cynical joke, was it not because the Crucified is hanging on it. The cross, without the Redeemer, is sheer cynicism; but with the Son of man the Cross is the new tree of Wisdom. By «freely submitting himself to the passion» of the Cross, Jesus Christ has opened the substance and purpose for our lives: to be lifted up with him to the Holy Cross to fling open our arms and our heart to God's heavenly gift, in an admirable exchange. Here too, we must listen to the Father's voice that came from the heavens: «You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased» (Mk 1:11). To be crucified with Jesus and resurrect with him: that is the reason for it all! There is hope, there is a meaning, and there is life! We are not mad when, we Christians, during the Paschal Vigil, in a most solemn way, that is, in the Easter Proclamation, sing a hymn of praise to the original sin: «O happy fault! O necessary fault of Adam, which gained for us so great a Redeemer!», who, through his pain has infused a new “significance” to pain.

«See the tree of the cross, where the Saviour of the world was crucified: come and venerate it» (Good Friday Liturgy). If we manage to overcome the scandal and insanity of Christ crucified there is nothing else for us to do but to worship him and be grateful for his Gift. And to decidedly seek the Holy Cross in our own life, to fill us up with the certainty that, «through him, with him and in him», our donation will be transformed, in the hands of the Father, for the Holy Spirit, in eternal life: «Shed for you and for many in the remission of sins».

Texte de l'Évangile

(Jn 3,13-17):

Abbé Antoni CAROL i Hostench

Gospel text

(Lk 6,43-49):

Jesus said to the crowd, «No healthy tree bears bad fruit, no poor tree bears good fruit. And each tree is known by the fruit it bears: you don't gather figs from thorns, or grapes from brambles. Similarly the good person draws good things from the good stored in the heart, and an evil person draws evil things from the evil stored in the heart. For the mouth speaks from the fullness of the heart.

»Why do you call me: ‘Lord! Lord!’ and not do what I say? I will show you what the one who comes to me and listens to my words and acts accordingly, is like. That one is like the builder who dug deep and laid the foundations of his house on rock. The river overflowed and the stream dashed against the house, but could not carry it off because the house had been well built. But the one who listens and does not act, is like a man who built his house on the ground without a foundation. The flood burst against it, and the house fell at once: and what a terrible disaster that was!».

The Application

Jesus compares us with a tree, so that we understand the importance of the root, environment and also our own nature.  In order to give good fruit it is necessary that all these elements work together. If the tree does not resource itself, using the means it has at its disposal, it cannot give fruit.

Humanly we cannot say that we do not give the fruits. Jesus reminds us of this by saying that we give the fruit and He invites us to check the quality of our fruit.

The third point is more important than the others. The rock on which we build our house. This rock is divine love, a love given freely and gratefully received. If we recognize this love, it cannot be passive, because it is by nature active.

"Every tree can be recognized by its fruit"

Action of the day : Be aware of the Rock and the quality of your fruit

«Each tree is known by the fruit it bears»

Fr. Raimondo M. SORGIA Mannai OP

(San Domenico di Fiesole, Florencia, Italy)

Today, the Lord surprises us by “advertising” himself. It is not my intention to “shock” anyone with this assertation. It is only our earthly publicity that lessens the great and supernatural things. What induces us to look at publicity with suspicion are, for instance, promises such as those assuring us that, within a few weeks, we will be losing five or six kilograms if using a certain “trick product” (or others to the same extent). But, when we have a hundred per cent guaranteed “product”, and —as in the case of the Lord— nothing is being sold in exchange of money, and we are only asked to believe him while considering him our leader and a model of a certain life style, then this kind of “publicity” should not surprise us and can be accepted as totally legitimate. Has not Jesus been the greatest “publicist” when He said, «I am the Way and the Truth and the Life» (Jn 14:6)?

Today, He affirms that «the one who comes to me and listens to my words and acts accordingly» is wise and «is like the builder who dug deep and laid the foundations of his house on rock» (Lk 6:47-48), for he now has a well built house, that can face any kind of weather. On the contrary, if the builder is not so sensible, he will end up in the middle of a pile of rubble and, if he was in the house when the flood burst into it, he may lose not only the house but his own life, too.

Therefore, it is not enough to get close to Jesus, but we have to listen, with the maximum attention, to his teachings and, most of all, to prompt them into action. For even the curious, the heretic or the history or philology scholar may approach him... So only by coming close to him, and basically, by practicing Jesus' doctrine, shall we be able to build a building of Christian saintliness, as a paradigm for the faithful pilgrims and glory of the celestial Church.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 6,43-49):

Gospel text

(Lk 6,39-42):

Jesus offered this example, «Can a blind person lead another blind person? Surely both will fall into a ditch. A disciple is not above the master; but when fully trained, he will be like the master. So why do you pay attention to the speck in your brother's eye while you have a log in your eye and are not conscious of it? How can you say to your neighbor: ‘Friend, let me take this speck out of your eye’, when you can't remove the log in your own? You hypocrite! First remove the log from your own eye and then you will see clearly enough to remove the speck from your neighbor's eye».

The Application

As we have many points for the application, I would invite you to re-read life through  the gospel of the day and to live this day according to its teaching.

  • Our blindness, self-knowledge, knowledge of the other.  It is important that we recognize the conflicts and movements that remain in our hearts, in our thoughts and the way we look at ourselves and the world.
  • Am I a faithful disciple of the Master. Who is my true Master? If we proclaim our faith in Jesus Christ, we must be so in our daily lives. He will become our model and we must be like Him in our words and deeds.
  • Mutual correction, does we do it in charity?  Love must be the reason for mutual correction. How can we accompany a person without recognizing our own weakness?
  • The necessity of my conversion and reconciliation with God. Therefore, our own conversion, like Saul to Paul, will become a good lesson to others.
  • What is the mission we have received today from the Lord and how will I fulfill it?

«A disciple is not above the master; but when fully trained, he will be like the master»

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench

(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, the words of the Gospel make us think about how important examples are along with procuring an exemplary life for others. Yes, indeed, we have a saying that goes «“Friar example” is the best preacher», and another one saying «an image is worth a thousand words». Let us not forget that we, Christians, are —with no exception!— guides, as our Baptism confers on us a participation in Christ's priesthood (saving intercession): all of us that have received the baptism, have also received the baptismal priesthood. And all priesthood, beyond its mission to sanctify and teach others, also embodies the munus —the function— to rule and lead.

Yes, with our behaviour —whether we like it or not— we have the opportunity to become a stimulating model for those around us. Let us think, for instance, about the influence parents have over their children, teachers over their pupils, authorities over citizens, etc. And Christians, consequently, must have a particularly lively conscience of this fact. For..., «can a blind person lead another blind person?» (Lk 6:39).

For us, Christians, what the Jews and the first generations of Christians said of Jesus Christ: «He has done all things well» (Mk 7:37); «all that Jesus did and taught» (Act 1:1) should be like a call to attention.

We must try to transform into deeds what we believe in and declare by word of mouth. On one occasion, the Pope Benedic XVI, when he still was Cardinal Ratzinger, asserted that «those adapted Christians are the most threatening danger», that is, those persons that boast of their Christianism but, in actual practice, their behaviour shows they do not manifest the characteristic “radicalism” of the Gospel.

To be radical, though, is not tantamount to be fanatical (for charity is patient and tolerant) or to be immoderate (for moderation is impossible in love matters). As Saint John Paul II has said, «the crucified Lord is an insurmountable testimony of patient love and humble mansuetude»: He is not fanatic or immoderate. But He is radical, so much so, that the centurion who was present at his death felt like saying: «Surely this was a righteous man» (Lk 23:47).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 6,39-42)

Abbé Antoni CAROL i Hostench
