Gospel text

(Lk 6,20-26):

Lifting up his eyes to his disciples, Jesus said, «Fortunate are you who are poor, the kingdom of God is yours. Fortunate are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Fortunate are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Fortunate are you when people hate you, when they reject you and insult you and number you among criminals, because of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for a great reward is kept for you in heaven. Remember that is how the ancestors of this people treated the prophets.

»But alas for you who have wealth, for you have been comforted now. Alas for you who are full, for you will go hungry. Alas for you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. Alas for you when people speak well of you, for that is how the ancestors of these people treated the false prophets».

The Application

Listening to this gospel, we find it difficult to apply it in daily life.  Yet Luke tells us a truth, the   the source of this teaching: reason through the knowledge of one's own identity. Why do we have to do them? Simply, since we are children of God, a God full of love and mercy, Jesus asks us to act with dignity, according to our own divine identity, an identity we inherited from the Lord's death and resurrection.

Jesus does not ask us to react to such a situation, but He invites us to be proactive and to have only God our Father as our only model to imitate. Since He is merciful, in this divine generosity that man finds his hope and is able to live his life. In this Gospel, Jesus invites us to participate in this divine generosity.

Action of the day : Be aware that you are God’s beloved child.

«Fortunate are you who are poor. Alas for you who have wealth»

Fr. Joaquim MESEGUER García

(Rubí, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, Jesus points out where the true happiness lies in our lives. In Luke's version, beatitudes are accompanied by painful wails for those who do not accept the message of salvation, but prefer to stick to a self-sufficient and selfish life. With the beatitudes and wails, Jesus applies the doctrine of the two paths: the path of life and the fact of death. There is not a third and neutral possibility: he who does not follow the path of life is heading for the path of death; who does not follow the light, lives in darkness.

«Fortunate are you who are poor, the Kingdom of God is yours!» (Lk 6:29). This beatitude is the basis of all the others, because who is poor will be able to get the Kingdom of God as a gift. He who is poor will realize he must be hungry and thirsty: not of material things, but of the Word of God; not of power, but of love and justice. Who is poor will be able to cry over the world's sufferings. Who is poor, will know that God is all his wealth and, because of that, the world will not understand him and will harass him.

«But alas for you who have wealth, for you have been comforted now!» (Lk 6:24). This wail is also the basis for all the others: because who is rich and self-sufficient, who does not know how to place his wealth at the service of others, he just confines himself to his own selfishness and works out his own misfortune. May God deliver us from the thirst of riches, from going after this world's promises and from placing our heart in material things; may God deliver us from taking any pleasure in human praise and adulation, for that would mean we have placed our heart in the world's glory rather than in the Glory of Jesus Christ. It will be profitable for us to remember what St. Basil said: «Whomever loves his neighbor as he loves himself should not have more than his neighbor does (…) then everyone will share their goods and spend them on themselves».

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 6,27-38):

Abbé Jaume AYMAR i Ragolta

(Badalona, Barcelona, Espagne)

The Application

Life is getting all the more complicated and the situation actuel is not capable to propose a remedy. All that we hear in our society is the interdiction and obligations. The freedom that we once cherished is conditioned and limited.

Happily, today’s gospel speakes about being happy and the solution proposed to us to be happy is not conditioned neither by matrial welbeing, nor the question of having something important or essential in life. Jesus seems to propose to us that for a believer the source of his or her happiness comes from the Lord. Particularly our capacity to see the divine presence and reward that God showers on us, on a daily basis. If I put it another way, the application of the beatitudes in our daily life.

Since our life is in God and by God, anything of human glory, separated from the divine will, will have no effect in us. Neither joy or sadness of this earth will affect us. In our daily application of divine will, in our mere eating and drinking which are essentially material in nature, can give us the deep joy, once it is an accomplishment of divine will.

Action of the day : Remain connected with God.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 6,20-26):

Gospel text

(Mt 1,1-16.18-23):

This is how Jesus Christ was born. Mary his mother had been given to Joseph in marriage but before they lived together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph, her husband, made plans to divorce her in all secrecy. He was an upright man, and in no way did he want to discredit her. While he was pondering over this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, «Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. She has conceived by the Holy Spirit, and now she will bear a son. You shall call him “Jesus” for He will save his people from their sins». All this happened in order to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: «The virgin will conceive and bear a son, and He will be called Emmanuel» which means: “God-with-us”.

The Application

Mary's nativity sums up God's project, the economy of salvation, and we will see its fulfillment later on the feast of the Assumption. Everything was made possible by her YES. From the beginning God chose her parents so that this Daughter of God would grow up in a way worthy of her Son.

God continues to accompany us, just as He accompanied Mary. God not only accompanies us, He protects us and accompanies others who help us. Joseph is invited to help Mary and to understand this divine plan in his wife. In obedience, like Mary, He answered with a big YES.

This feast encourages us to believe that God is active in our personal life. Our our betterment, God is not only active in our personal life, He active in many w&ay which can never understand. Thus, there is need from our part to cooperate with God, if we wish that His Kingdom comes. Like the Parents of Mary who had the patience of waiting for this child for a long time, like Jospeh who could accept the challenge and cooperate with the messenger of God and finally like Mary to put all her trust in the Lord and could say YES to the divine projet.

Action of the day: Believe in God and His divine work in you.

«The virgin will conceive and bear a son, and He will be called Emmanuel»

+ Fr. Agustí ALTISENT i Altisent Monk of Santa Maria de Poblet
(Tarragona, Spain)

Today, Jesus' genealogy, the Saviour that had to come and be born of Mary, shows us how the work of God is interwoven into human history, and how God acts in the secret and silence of every single day. At the same time, we can see his reliability to accomplish his promises. Even Ruth and Rahab (cf. Mt 1:5), foreigners, converted to the faith of the only God (and Rahab was a harlot!), were our Saviour's ancestors.

The Holy Spirit, that mysteriously had to incarnate the Son in Mary, entered, therefore, in our history since a long time before, and traced a path leading to the Virgin Mary of Nazareth and, through her, to her Son Jesus. «The virgin will conceive and bear a son, and He will be called Emmanuel» (Mt 1:23). How spiritually delicate Mary's entrails, her heart and her will, must have been, to engage the attention of the Father and make her become the mother of “God-with-mankind”, He, who had to bring us the supernatural light and grace for the redemption of all of us. In this work, everything bring us to contemplate, admire and worship, through prayer, the greatness, the generosity and the simplicity of the divine action, that will extol and rescue our human lineage through our Lord’s personal involvement.

Further away, in Today's Gospel, we see how Mary was advised she would conceive God, the Saviour of his People. And let us realize that this girl, virgin and Jesus' mother, had to be also our mother. The special election of Mary, «Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!» (Lk 1:42), makes us to admire God's tenderness in his way of proceeding; because He did not redeem us —so to speak— “by remote control”, but by closely binding himself with our family and our history. Who could ever imagine God to be so great and so simple as to so intimately bind himself to us?

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 1,1-16.18-23):

Gospel text

(Lk 6,1-5):

One Sabbath Jesus was going through the corn fields and his disciples began to pick heads of grain crushing them in their hands for food. Some of the Pharisees asked them, «Why do you do what is forbidden on the Sabbath?». Then Jesus spoke, «Have you never read what David did when he and his men were hungry?. He entered the house of God, took and ate the bread of the offering and even gave some to his men, though only priests are allowed to eat that bread». And Jesus added, «The Son of Man is Lord and rules over the Sabbath».

The Application

We are called to live our life according the teaching of the Lord than simply be content and mediocrate, with observing ourward teachings in general. God has given the itelligence to know and discern. Once this intelligence is applied in daily life, and if our life is filled love and charity, then everything will be easy to handly.

The world is free to look at us and they can’t  see us other than with the worldly standards. Thus they end up with judgments. We are called to listen,  discern and apply in everything the gospel values.

Jesus is inviting these Pharisees to see the world with mercy and kindness. This kindness is available in their own history, thus inviting them to recall the past. Today, He affirms that He is the Master and invites us to be His disciples.

Action of the day : Be a person of love than law.

«The Son of Man is Lord and rules over the Sabbath»

Fr. Austin Chukwuemeka IHEKWEME
(Ikenanzizi, Nigeria)

Today, responding to the Pharisees' accusation, Jesus explains the correct meaning of the Sabbath, while quoting an example from the Old Testament (cf. Deut 23:26): «Have you never read what David did (...)?. He entered the house of God, took and ate the bread of the offering and even gave some to his men, though only priests are allowed to eat that bread» (Lk 6:3-4).

David's behaviour anticipates the doctrine Christ teaches in this passage. God had already established in the Old Testament an order for the precepts of the Law, whereby those of less rank would yield to the main ones.

In the light of all this, it can be understood that a ceremonial precept (as the one we are commenting) yields to a precept of the natural law. The precept of Sabbath, likewise, is not more important than the elementary needs of subsistence.

In this passage, Christ teaches which was the meaning of the divine institution of the Sabbath: God had instituted it to man's benefit, so that he could rest and devote his time with peace and joy to the divine cult. However, the Pharisees' interpretation had transformed this day into a day of anguish and worrying because of the many directions and prohibitions.

The Sabbath had been set up not only for man's rest, but also to glorify God: this is the actual and true meaning of the expression «The Sabbath was made for man...» (Mk 2:27).

Furthermore, by declaring himself “Lord of the Sabbath” (cf. Lk 6:5), He openly manifests that He is the very same God who gave the precept to the people of Israel, thus confirming his divinity and his universal power. For this reason, other laws can be established, just as Yahweh did in the Old Testament. Jesus can therefore be called “Lord of the Sabbath”, because He is God.

Let us beg the Virgin Mother of God to help us believing and understanding that the Sabbath belongs to God and that it is a way —adapted to our own nature— to glorify and honour the Almighty. As Saint John Paul II has written, «our rest is a “sacred”» thing and an occasion «to realize that everything is the work of God».
