We, the children of Mary, have the pleasure of honouring her, not only as our Mother in heaven, but also as the first to enjoy the salvation offered by the Lord. The Church offers us this text of the visitation for meditation, because it helps us to understand our mother for imitation, especially the way Mary fulfilled the divine will, in a purely human way.  After Jesus, God had chosen her for us, to be our model and guide, as the way to heaven.

Today's Gospel tells us that she set out and hurried to the mountainous region, to a town in Judea. "We will see this eagerness all her life, from the beginning of Christ's life. She searched her Son, found him in the Temple and acted in Cana.  This readiness was not merely a human impulse, but purely divine, for in her God was at work.

God worked in her, for she left the Holy Spirit free to act in her, so that He might use her in his freedom. She is a woman of listening and dialogue. If she is in her cousin's house today, it is because she believed in the word of God. She listened attentively to the Word spoken by the angel and knew how to dialogue with him, in faith and trust. For a person of faith, this listening and dialogue are very important. As Mary's children, she is our school where we learn to listen to the Lord and she will teach us, how to put the message of God in practice.

Because she listens and dialogues, her presence guarantees the certainty of trust and ensures joy. She brings consolation to all those who suffer and by her presence she perfumes the environment with her dawn. She knew how to accompany her Son hanging on the Cross, and today she is with Elizabeth, who is in need of youth. She is always with us.

With Mary every human encounter will become like a divine encounter. Even if it was Mary who went to Elizabeth, in this human encounter there was another divine encounter, Jesus and John the Baptist. She was conscious that she was carrying God Almighty within her. My friends, let us be aware that we carry by our faith, Christ the Saviour of the world. Let us become aware that the other before us is a chosen one of God, sent by the Father to us.  Either he or she is there to save us, or he or she is there to be accompanied by us to be saved by God. My friends, on this feast day, by the grace of God, let us transform every human encounter as a divine encounter.

The feast of the Assumption reminds us of our history of salvation. Mary not only reminds us of the past, since this God has done wonders in her, she assures us that this God still does wonders in us. From the present she invites us to the future. Her feast is ours, for God will take us with us. Jesus has already promised us, "where I am, you will also be with me," and in Mary He has fulfilled this promise.

Do we recognize in this feast a humanity elevated in Mary who is able to receive God's grace in its perfection? God has exalted His humble servant, and in her the whole Church will be exalted and we find our hope for life. This elevation offered to Mary is symbolically offered to her Church, of which we are a member. With Mary and the Church of the Lord, the promise made to Abraham, is a certainty for all humanity of the day.  In this motherly love of Mary, let us carry Christ in our human encounter like her, so that all those who come to us may rejoice with the same joy of John the Baptist. Amen.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 19,3-12):

Gospel text

(Mt 19,3-12):

Some Pharisees approached Jesus. They wanted to test him and asked, «Is a man allowed to divorce his wife for any reason he wants?». Jesus replied, «Have you not read that in the beginning the Creator made them male and female, and he said: ‘Man has now to leave father and mother, and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one body’? So they are no longer two but one body; let no one separate what God has joined».

They asked him, «Then, why did Moses command us to write a bill of dismissal in order to divorce?». Jesus replied, «Moses knew your stubborn heart, so he allowed you to divorce your wives, but it was not so in the beginning. Therefore I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, unless it be for concubinage, and marries another, commits adultery».

The disciples said, «If that is the condition of a married man, it is better not to marry». Jesus said to them, «Not everybody can accept what you have just said, but only those who have received this gift. Some are born incapable of marriage. Some have been made that way by others. But there are some who have given up the possibility of marriage for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who can accept it, accept it».

The Application

I would like to invite you all to look little deeper into this gospel message, which  is very often reduced into a simple question and answer concerning of marriage, celibacy, etc.  I would like to look this answer  differently, in the sense, the divine will in my life. Whatever may be the situation of our present life, we are called to search for the divine will and try to accomplish it.

God has created the world and set a system in it and if we haven’t understood this system fully, we haven’t understood the divine plan in this creation. The more we get closer to the nature, the better will be our understanding of the world and the Author of the world. It is in the same nature that God has wished celibacy and marriage.

Man and woman are the two faces of divine image, where God has put the same value in them, nothing more nothing less, but certainly different. It is in this difference of man and woman that God wihsed to establish the unity, marriage. Thus marriage is made by God as the perfect image of God’s love to the whole world.

Action of the day : Work for unity.

«Let no one separate what God has joined»

Fr. Roger J. LANDRY
(Hyannis, Massachusetts, United States)

Today, Jesus responds to his contemporaries questions about the true meaning of marriage by underlining its indissolubility.

His answer, however, also provides the adequate foundation for Christians to respond to those whose stubborn hearts have made them seek to extend the definition of marriage to homosexual couples.

In taking marriage back to God's original plan, Jesus underlines four things relevant to why only one man and one woman can be joined in marriage:

1) «In the beginning, the Creator made them male and female» (Mt 19:4). Jesus teaches that there is great meaning to our masculinity and femininity in God's plan. To ignore it is to ignore who we are.

2) «Man has now to leave father and mother and be joined to his wife» (Mt 19:5). God's plan is not that a man leave his parents and cling to whomever he wishes, but to a wife.

3) «The two shall become one body» (Mt 19:5). This bodily union goes beyond the short-lived physical union that occurs in the act of making love. It points toward the lasting union that happens when man and woman, through making love, actually procreate a child who is the perduring marriage or union of their bodies. It is obvious that man and man, and woman and woman, cannot become one body in this way.

4) «Let no one separate what God has joined» (Mt 19:6). God himself has joined man and woman in marriage and whenever we try to divide what he has joined, we do so at our own and all of society's expense.

In his catecheses on Genesis, Pope John Paul II said: «In his answer to the Pharisees, Christ put forward to his interlocutors the Total vision of man, without which no adequate answer can be given to questions connected with marriage». Each of us is called to be the “echo” of this Word of God in our own day.

Gospel text

(Mt 18,21—19,1):

Peter asked Jesus, «Lord, how many times must I forgive the offenses of my brother or sister? Seven times?». Jesus answered, «No, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. This story throws light on the kingdom of heaven. A king decided to settle the accounts of his servants. Among the first was one who owed him ten thousand gold ingots. As the man could not repay the debt, the king commanded that he be sold as a slave with his wife, children and all his goods in payment. The official threw himself at the feet of the king and said, ‘Give me time, and I will pay you back everything’. The king took pity on him and not only set him free but even canceled his debt.

»This official then left the king's presence and he met one of his companions who owed him a hundred pieces of silver. He grabbed him by the neck and almost strangled him, shouting, ‘Pay me what you owe!’. His companion threw himself at his feet and asked him, ‘Give me time, and I will pay everything’. The other did not agree, but sent him to prison until he had paid all his debt. His companions saw what happened. They were indignant and so they went and reported everything to their lord. Then the lord summoned his official and said, ‘Wicked servant, I forgave you all that you owed when you begged me to do so. Weren't you bound to have pity on your companion as I had pity on you?’. The lord was now angry, so he handed his servant over to be punished, until he had paid his whole debt». Jesus added, «So will my heavenly Father do with you unless each of you sincerely for-give your brother or sister».

When Jesus had finished this teaching, He left Galilee and arrived at the border of Judea, on the other side of the Jordan River.

The Application

We all know about this parable and its implications. I would like to invite you to look into three points, so that you may be able to apply any one of the points for the day.

  1. The parable and the teaching of Jesus asks us to know ourselves, our state of life and also to recognize others around us. If we fail to know ourselves, we may end up drastically to recognize all that others give to us.

  1. Forgiveness is not a charity against justice, but a Christian duty that we cannot be otherwise. Just like love, pardon is also another visible Christian identity. Anyone who refuse to pardon others, don’t know to love either. Selective love may not do any charity to us, and the same with pardon.

  1. Jesus tells us that we are not a people of the law, but a people of the covenant. A people faithful to the covenant made by God.  It is no longer a question of 'how many times' but how you will do it.

Action of the day: Be a person of heart than law.

«Lord, how many times must I forgive the offenses of my brother or sister?»

Fr. Joan BLADÉ i Piñol
(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, asking «how many times must I forgive the offenses of my brother or sister?» (Mt 18:21), may mean: —These persons I love so much also have their little ways and whims that bother me; day after day, they pester me every five minutes; they do not speak to me... Lord, how long am I supposed to put up with them?

And Jesus answers with the lesson of the patience. Actually, both colleagues coincide when they say: «have patience» (Mt 18:26-29). But, while the intemperance of the wicked one, strangling his companion for a few silver coins, provokes his moral and economic ruin, the king's patience, while saving the debtor, his family and his goods, magnifies the monarch's personality and generates the confidence of his court. The king's reaction in Jesus' words reminds us the Psalm that goes: «But you are willing to forgive, so that you might be honored» (Ps 130:4).

Evidently, we have to oppose to injustice, and energetically, if at all necessary, (otherwise, it would be a sign of apathy or cowardice). But indignation is healthy only when there is no selfishness, nor wrath, nor any nonsense, but our straight desire to fight for the truth. The authentic patience brings us to put up mercifully with contradiction, weakness, inconveniences, unreasonable persons or events. To be patient is tantamount to dominate oneself. Susceptible or violent persons cannot be patient because they neither take their time reflect about anything nor can they dominate themselves.

Patience is a Christian virtue because is a part of the message from the Kingdom of Heaven, and it is forged on the experience we all have defects. If Paul exhorts us to put on a heart of patience with one another (cf. Col 3:12-13), Peter reminds us that the Lord's patience offers us the chance of salvation (cf. 2Pet 3:15).

For, how many times has God's patience forgiven us in the confessionary?
Seven times? Seventy seven times, seven? Maybe more!

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 18,21—19,1):

Abbé Joan BLADÉ i Piñol
(Barcelona, Espagne)

Sept fois ? Soixante dix fois sept fois? Peut-être plus!

Gospel text

(Mt 18,15-20):

Jesus said to his disciples, «If your brother or sister has sinned against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are in private, and if he listens to you, you have won your brother. If you are not listened to, take with you one or two others so that the case may be decided by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he still refuses to listen to them, tell it to the assembled Church. But if he does not listen to the Church, then regard such a one as a pagan or a publican. I say to you: whatever you bind on earth, heaven will keep bound; and whatever you unbind on earth, heaven will keep unbound. In like manner, I say to you: if on earth two of you are united in asking for anything, it will be granted to you by my heavenly Father. For where two or three are gathered in my Name, I am there among them».

The Application

Christian life has its foundation in the Word of God. We are annimated and guided by the same Word, which continues to animate the whole world. In today’s gospel, Jesus invites us to respect the freedom of the other and to accept him or her as he or she is. To do this, he offers us personal dialogue, attentive listening, and patience as means. God acts in this way with us when man rebels against God. He proposes  to be divinely, in our humanity.

The second proposal is also very important. May we never be alone. We must take the community (family or friends) in trust. The Christian faith has a communal character. We cannot live our faith in voluntary isolation.  An individual who doesn’t associate himself or herself with the community, he or she is no more worthy to be called christian.

The third proposal is more important than the others; prayer. May God be the centre of our life. That we remain connected to God, especially to his will. Since God is with us, in our daily life, we can’t pratically ignore Him.

Action of the day : Be a person of dialogue and listening.

«If your brother or sister has sinned against you, go and point out the fault (...). Where two or three are gathered in my Name, I am there among them»

Fr. Pedro-José YNARAJA i Díaz
(El Montanyà, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, in this brief evangelic fragment, the Lord teaches us three frequently ignored but important ways to proceed.

Understanding and advice for the friend or colleague. To warn him, in discreet intimacy («the two of you in private»), clearly («point out the fault»), of his erroneous attitude so that he can revitalize his way of life. Eventually, if the first advice did not result in anything positive, to get also a friend's collaboration. But if even in this way his conversion cannot be achieved and his sin causes great scandal, we must not doubt to exert the prophetic and public act of denouncing that, today, may just be a letter to a publication's director, or a demonstration or a banner. However, this way of acting is very demanding for whoever practicing it, and frequently, ungrateful and awkward. This is why so many find it much easier to choose what we wrongly call “Christian charity”, which is nothing but pure escapism, comfort, cowardice, false tolerance. In fact, «the same punishment awaits evildoers than the complacent who tolerate them» (St. Bernard).

Every Christian has the right to demand from us priests the forgiveness of God and his Church. At a given moment, a psychologist may appease your state of mind; a psychiatrist, through medical care, can defeat an endogenous disorder. Both can therefore be very useful though, at times, prove to be insufficient. For God only may forgive, remove, forget, smash while destroying, the personal sin. And only his Church can tie or untie demeanours, while transcending Heaven’s judgment. And, thanks to all this enjoy an internal peace and start to be happy.

In the priest's hands and words lie the privilege of taking the bread for Jesus-Eucharist to actually become immanence and food. Any disciple from the Kingdom may join another one, or better still, many more, and with fervor, Faith, courage and Hope, submerge into the world to transform it in the true body of Jesus-Mystic. And in his company go to God Father that will listen to our pleas, for his Son promised us so, «for where two or three are gathered in my Name, I am there among them» (Mt 18:20).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 18,15-20):

Abbé Pedro-José YNARAJA i Díaz

Gospel text

(Mt 18,1-5.10.12-14):

At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked him, «Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?». Then Jesus called a little child, set the child in the midst of the disciples, and said, «I assure you that unless you change and become like little children, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes lowly like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, and whoever receives such a child in my name receives me. See that you do not despise any of these little ones, for I tell you: their angels in heaven continually see the face of my heavenly Father. What do you think of this? If someone has a hundred sheep and one of them strays, won’t he leave the ninety-nine on the hillside, and go to look for the stray one? And I tell you: when he finally finds it, he is more pleased about it than about the ninety-nine that did not get lost. It is the same with your Father in heaven: there they don't want even one of these little ones to be lost».

The Application

Who is the greatest may be an interesting human question, which means other or oneself before other. God looks us totally in a different way. It’s not the question of great or small, rather it’s a question of an affectiv  relationship and our capacity to see God in every being, just like a little child. When we learn to reserve a respect to a child, as a divine child, as the very presence of God, everything in and around us become divine. We grow up to see God in everything, including in non being. Thus, the creation in its totaly is an image of God and God doesn’t wish that one among these bel ost, including you and me.

Action of the day : Participate in the joy of others.

«It is the same with your Father in heaven: there they don't want even one of these little ones to be lost»

Fr. Valentí ALONSO i Roig
(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, once more, the Gospel reveals to us God's heart. It gives us to understand the feelings the Father in Heaven reacts with, in relation to his children. His most impassionate concern is for the small ones, those, which nobody ever pays any attention to, those who do not attain wherever the rest of the world does. We already knew that the Father, as the good Father He is, has a preference for the small children, but to day we can recognize another wish of the Father that becomes compulsory for us: «I assure you that unless you change and become like little children, you cannot enter the kingdom of Heaven» (Mt 18:3).

We, therefore, realize that what the Father values the most is not so much "being small", as "becoming lowly". «Whoever becomes lowly (...) is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven» (Mt 18:4). This is why we can see our responsibility in this action of becoming lowly. It is not a matter of having been created small or simple, limited or more or less capable, but of being able to keep off any eventual greatness while remaining to the level of the humbler and simpler. The actual importance of each one consists in resembling one of those small ones Jesus introduces us to.

Last but not least, the Gospel teaches us today another lesson. There are, and closer to us than we think! some "small ones" that we may eventually have more forsaken than others: those that are like sheep gone astray; the Father looks for them and, when He finds them, He is more pleased because they come back home and do not go stray any more. Perhaps, if we should try to look at those surrounding us more as sheep sought and found by the Father than just sheep gone astray, we could also see more often and closer God's face. St. Asterius of Amasea tells us: «The parable of the lost sheep and the shepherd teaches us that we must not easily despair of those who are in danger or be slow to help them» .

Texte de l'Évangile

(Mt 18,1-5.10.12-14):

Abbé Valentí ALONSO i Roig
(Barcelona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Jn 12,24-26):

Jesus said, «Truly, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Those who love their life destroy it, and those who despise their life in this world keep it for everlasting life. Whoever wants to serve me, let him follow me and wherever I am, there shall my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him».

The Application

On this feast day of St. Lawrence, we remember not only St. Lawrence, but all the martyrs who shed their blood for the faith.  In today's world, it seems to me that God does not necessarily ask us to shed our blood, rather  He asks us to understand that life is a gift from God, and this life belongs to God. It is in this sense that Jesus is asking us to choose Him (as the author of life) than the life itself.

If we accept this truth, and learn to live according to it, we will no longer have the fear of death, and even we will be able to accept death as a great gift from the Lord, though imposed by the society. Before this truth, life and death have the same value, for in life and in death we belong to the Lord, St. Paul tells us. In this belonging, God will honour us.

Action of the day ; Be aware that everything belong to God.

«Whoever wants to serve me, let him follow me and wherever I am, there shall my servant be also»

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench
(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, the Church —through the liturgy of the Eucharist celebrating the feast of St. Lawrence, the roman martyr— reminds us that «there exists a testimony of coherence that all Christians must be willing to give, even at the cost of great sacrifice and suffering» (Saint John Paul II).

Moral law is saint and inviolable. This assertion, certainly contrasts with the relativistic environment abounding now a days, whereas we tend to easily adapting ethical demands to our personal comfort or to our own weaknesses. We shall certainly not find anyone admitting: —I am immoral; —I am unconscious; —I am a person without truth... Anyone admitting these facts would automatically and immediately disqualify himself.

The definite question would therefore be: what moral, what conscience and what truth are we talking about? It is evident that social peace and healthy coexistence cannot be based on a “moral à la carte”, where each one chooses his own way, without bearing in mind the inclinations and aspirations the Creator has set out for our nature. This “moral”, far from leading us trough the «paths of righteousness» towards the «green pastures» the Good Shepherd wants for us (cf. Ps 23:1-3), it would irremediably take us to the quicksand of the “moral relativism”, where absolutely everything can be debated, agreed upon and justified.

Martyrs are unappealable testimonies of the saintliness of the moral law: there are basic demands of love that accept neither exceptions nor adaptations. In fact, «in the New Covenant we can find numerous testimonies followers of Christ that (...) accepted persecutions and death before making the idolatrous gesture of burning incense before the statue of the Emperor» (Saint John Paul II).

In the Roman environment of emperor Valerian, the deacon «St. Lawrence loved Christ in life, and imitated Christ unto death» (St. Augustine). And, once again, we see confirmed that «the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life» (Jn 12:25). Luckily for us, the memory of St. Lawrence will perpetually remain as a signal that to follow Christ is worth offering our life rather than admitting frivolous interpretations of his path.
