Jesus said to his disciples, «Look at the fig tree and all the trees. As soon as their buds sprout, you know that summer is already near. In the same way, as soon as you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly, I tell you, this generation will not pass away, until all this has happened: heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away».

Today, Jesus invites us to see how the fig tree buds sprout, a symbol of our Church that, periodically, is renewing itself thanks to that inner power God instills in it (let us remember the allegory of the vine and the branches, cf. Jn 15): «Look at the fig tree and all the trees. As soon as their buds sprout, you know that summer is already near» (Lk 21:29-30).

The eschatological discourse we are reading these days, in its prophetic style, deliberately warps chronology, by placing at the same level things that must happen in different moments. The fact that, in the portion of the fragment chosen for today's liturgy, we have a very limited range, allows us to think that, perhaps, we should assume what is therein said as said by us, here and now: «This generation will not pass away, until all this has happened» (Lk 21:32). In fact, Origen already comments: «All this can happen in each one of us; in us, death may remain destroyed, the definite enemy of ours».

Today, I would like to speak as the prophets did: we are about to contemplate a great sprouting in the Church. Look at the signs of the times (cf. Mt 16:3). Soon important things are to happen. Do not be afraid. Remain in your place. Set the seeds enthusiastically. And, afterwards, you will joyfully return carrying your bundled sheaves (cf. Ps 126,6). It is true that the enemy-man will keep on sowing darnel. The evil will not burn until the end of time (cf. Mt 13:30). But the Kingdom of God is already here amidst us. And, through great efforts, it is making his way (cf. Mt 11:12).

Pope John Paul II, said it at the beginning of the third millennium: «Duc in altum» (cf. Lk 5:4). At times, we may feel we do nothing worthwhile, or, even feel we go backwards. But these pessimistic impressions originate in calculations, which are extremely human, or in the bad image some media malevolently likes to give of us. The hidden reality that makes no noise, is this constant work we are doing together, impelled by the force of the Saint Spirit.

Aujourd'hui, Jésus nous invite à regarder les signes de notre temps et de notre époque et à reconnaitre en ceux-ci l'avènement du Royaume des Cieux. L'invitation est afin que nous fixions nos regards sur le figuier et les autres arbres —«Voyez le figuier et tous les autres arbres» (Lc 21,29)— et concentrer notre attention sur eux pour percevoir ce qui leur arrive «vous n'avez qu'à les regarder pour savoir que l'été est déjà proche» (Lc 21,30). Les figuiers commençaient à bourgeonner. Les bourgeons commençaient à sortir. Ce n'était pas uniquement l'annonce des fleurs et des fruits mais aussi l'annonce de l'été, saison durant laquelle tous les arbres «bourgeonnent».

Selon Benoît XVI «la parole de Dieu nous incite à changer notre concept du réalisme. En effet, «la personne réaliste est celle qui reconnaît dans le Verbe de Dieu le fondement de tout». Cette Parole vivante qui nous montre l'été comme le signe de l'approche et de l'exubérance de la luminosité, est la lumière même: «lorsque vous verrez arriver cela, sachez que le royaume de Dieu est proche» (Lc 21,31). Par conséquent, maintenant, on ne peut pas seulement entendre la Parole, elle n'as pas seulement une voix, elle a aussi un visage que nous pouvons voir: Jésus de Nazareth» (Benoît XVI).

La communication entre Jésus et le Père fut parfaite, et tout ce qu'il a reçu du Père il nous l'a donné, en communiquant avec nous de la même manière. De ce fait, la proximité du Royaume des Cieux, qui s'exprime par la libre initiative de Dieu de venir à notre rencontre, doit nous amener à reconnaître l'approche du Royaume afin que nous aussi nous puissions communiquer d'une manière parfaite avec le Père à travers la Parole de Dieu —Verbum Domini—, en reconnaissant les signes de l'avènement du Royaume des Cieux qui est proche comme la réalisation des promesses du Père en Jésus Christ.

(Lk 21,20-28):

 Jesus said to his disciples, «When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you must know that the time has come when it will be reduced to a wasteland. Then, if you are in Judea, flee to the mountains; if you are in the city, leave it; and let those who are in the fields not return to the city. For these will be the days of its punishment and all that was announced in the Scripture will be fulfilled.

»How hard will it be for pregnant women and for mothers with babies at the breast! For a great calamity will come upon the land, and divine justice upon this people. They will be put to death by the sword or taken as slaves to other nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled upon by the pagans until the time of the pagans is fulfilled. Then there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth anguish of perplexed nations when they hear the roaring of the sea and its waves. People will faint with fear at the mere thought of what is to come upon the world, for the forces of the universe will be shaken. And at this time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. The signs of the times Now, when you see the first events, stand erect and lift up your heads, for your deliverance is drawing near».

The Application

Jesus is affirming to us that His father is not only a God of love and compassion, but also a God of justice. Since we have a paternal or maternal relationship with His Father, in this love relationship, there is nothing to fear. The day of justice is a day of joy and blessings, not a day of worry or anguish.  Today’s first reading can be a best example of divine protection. God will never abandon us and He is there with us, particularly in our joy and pain. Daniel and his king did experience this divine protection. This is part of our own salvation history and we have to appropriate this as our own and live our life in a dignified way.

Action of the Day: Be courageous.  

«Stand erect and lift up your heads, for your deliverance is drawing near»

Today, when reading the saint Gospel, can we afford not to ponder over the present moments, fuller every day with threats and blood shedding? «On the earth anguish of perplexed nations when they hear the roaring of the sea and its waves. People will faint with fear at the mere thought of what is to come upon the world, for the forces of the universe will be shaken» (Lk 21:25b-26a). The second coming of our Lord has quite often been depicted with the most terrifying images, as in this Gospel, and always under the sign of fear.

But, is it really this one, the message today's Gospel is addressing us today? Let us just look at the last sentence: «Now, when you see the first events, stand erect and lift up your heads, for your deliverance is drawing near» (Lk 21:28). The core of the message of these last days of our liturgical year is not fear but hopefulness of a future deliverance, that is, the Christian complete expectancy of the fulfillment of our full life with the Lord, which our body and the world around us will also share. The events narrated in such a dramatic way just symbolically indicate the participation of the whole creation in the second coming of the Lord, as it already participated on occasion of his first arrival, specially at his Passion, when the sky darkened and the earth shook. The cosmic dimension will not be forsaken at the end of time, because it is the dimension accompanying man since he entered the Paradise.

The Christian prospect is not deceiving, because when all this will happen —the same Lord tells us— «at this time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory» (Lk 21:,27). Let's not live an anguished life because of the second coming of the Lord, because of his Parusia: let us rather ponder over the profound words of St. Augustine that, already in his day, bearing witness of those Christians fearful of the Lord's coming, was wondering: «How can the Wife be afraid of her Spouse?».

«Lorsque vous verrez Jérusalem encerclée par des armées, sachez alors que sa dévastation est toute proche. Alors, ceux qui seront en Judée, qu'ils s'enfuient dans la montagne; ceux qui seront à l'intérieur de la ville, qu'ils s'en éloignent ; ceux qui seront à la campagne, qu'ils ne rentrent pas en ville, car ce seront des jours où Dieu fera justice pour accomplir toute l'Écriture.

»Malheureuses les femmes qui seront enceintes et celles qui allaiteront en ces jours-là, car il y aura une grande misère dans le pays, une grande colère contre ce peuple. Ils tomberont sous le tranchant de l'épée, ils seront emmenés en captivité chez toutes les nations païennes; Jérusalem sera piétinée par les païens, jusqu'à ce que le temps des païens soit achevé. Il y aura des signes dans le soleil, la lune et les étoiles. Sur terre, les nations seront affolées par le fracas de la mer et de la tempête. Les hommes mourront de peur dans la crainte des malheurs arrivant sur le monde, car les puissances des cieux seront ébranlées. Alors, on verra le Fils de l'homme venir dans la nuée, avec grande puissance et grande gloire. Quand ces événements commenceront, redressez-vous et relevez la tête, car votre rédemption approche».

L’Application

La foi est une grâce de Dieu, née de la vérité divine. Tout hommes qui est capable de reconnaitre cette vérité et s’arrive à l’approprier comme son devoir baptismal, aura la joie de la vivre dans la vie quotidienne. C’est cette foi qui a fait vivre Daniel et nous fait vivre encore aujourd’hui. N’ayons pas peur, car ce Dieu est toujours avec nous.

«Redressez-vous et relevez la tête, car votre rédemption approche»

Aujourd'hui, en lisant ce saint Évangile, comment n'y point voir un reflet de l'époque présente, toujours plus menaçante et sanglante? «Sur terre, les nations seront affolées par le fracas de la mer et de la tempête. Les hommes mourront de peur dans la crainte des malheurs arrivant sur le monde» (Lc 21,25b-26a). On a bien des fois représenté la seconde venue du Seigneur par des images les plus terrifiantes possibles, comme cet Évangile paraît l'indiquer, toujours sous le signe de la peur.

Est-ce là cependant le message que nous adresse aujourd'hui l'Évangile? Remarquons bien les derniers mots: «Quand ces événements commenceront, redressez-vous et relevez la tête, car votre rédemption approche» (Lc 21,28). Le cœur du message de ces derniers jours de l'année liturgique n'est pas la peur, mais l'espérance de la future libération, c'est-à-dire l'espérance complètement chrétienne de parvenir à la plénitude de la vie avec le Seigneur, à laquelle participeront aussi notre corps et le monde qui nous entoure. Les événements qui nous sont racontés si dramatiquement veulent indiquer de manière symbolique la participation de toute la création à la seconde venue du Seigneur, comme elle a déjà participé à sa première venue, en particulier au moment de la passion, quand le ciel s'obscurcit et que la terre trembla. La dimension cosmique ne sera pas oubliée à la fin des temps, car c'est une dimension qui accompagne l'homme depuis son entrée dans le Paradis.

L'espérance du chrétien n'est pas trompeuse, car quand ces choses commenceront d'arriver —nous dit le Seigneur Lui-même— «alors, on verra le Fils de l'homme venir dans la nuée, avec grande puissance et grande gloire» (Lc 21,27). Ne vivons pas dans l'angoisse face à la seconde venue du Seigneur, sa Parousie: méditons plutôt les profondes paroles de saint Augustin qui, déjà en son temps, voyant les chrétiens craintifs devant le retour du Seigneur, s'interrogeait: «Comment l'Épouse aurait-elle peur de son Époux?».

(Lk 21,12-19): 

Jesus said to his disciples, «People will lay their hands on you and persecute you; you will be delivered to the Jewish courts and put in prison, and for my sake you will be brought before kings and governors. This will be your opportunity to bear witness. So keep this in mind: do not worry in advance about what to answer, for I will give you words and wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents, and brothers, by relatives and friends, and some of you will be put to death. But even though you are hated by all for my name's sake, not a hair of your head will perish. Through perseverance you will possess your own selves».

The Application

Jesus helps us to understand our humanity and orient us to evolve from our fragility towards divine protection. We are all weak and fall easily victim to the world temptations, and in our limitedness, we give lots of importance to human desires and will. It is here Jesus comes towards us to assure that if we learn to put all our trust in the Lord, we can withstand any calamities and persecutions. It is quite possible that we may be hated even by our dear and near ones. Once our faith in the Lord remains intact, then the rest falls apart.

The perseverance is the fruit of our certitude and the certitude is the fruit of our capacity to discover the truth and the truth leads us towards faith, Faith in the goodness of the Lord. This discovery of the divine goodness helps us to understand what God has done to us, through the death and resurrection of the Lord. It is the foundation of all sort of perseverance. The perseverance is not simply our merit and effort, but a gift of divine revelation. We come to know this truth (the gift of God), because God has desired to reveal this to us.

«Through perseverance you will possess your own selves»

Today, we pay attention to this short but sharp sentence of our Lord, which sticks into our soul and makes us wonder: why perseverance is so important? why does Jesus tell us our salvation depends upon the exercise of this virtue?

Because the disciple is no more than his Master —«you will be hated by all for my name's sake» (Lk 21:17)—, and if the Lord was a sign of contradiction, we, his disciples, must necessarily be one too. The belligerents will get hold of the Kingdom of God, those who fight against the enemies of the soul, those who energetically combat, as St. Josemaria Escriva liked to say, “this most beautiful war of peace and love”, which Christian life consists of. All roses have thorns, and the way to Heaven is not without difficulties and obstacles. This is why, without the cardinal virtue of fortitude, our good intentions would turn out unfruitful. And perseverance is part of fortitude. Perseverance, concretely, drives us to the strength we need to carry our contradictions with joy.

Perseverance, in its maximum degree, is accomplished at the Cross. This is why, perseverance confers freedom by granting the possession of oneself through love. Christ's promise is indefectible: «Through perseverance you will possess your own selves!» (Lk 21:19), and this is so because what is saving us is the Cross. It is the strength of love that gives each one of us the patient and joyous acceptance of God's will, when, in a first moment, it upsets —as it happens at the Cross— our poor human will.

Only in a first moment, because afterwards, the overflowing energy of perseverance is liberated to help us understand the difficult science of the Cross. This is why, perseverance engenders patience, which goes much beyond simple resignation. Even more so. It has nothing to do with stoical attitudes. Patience decisively contributes to understand that the Cross is, well before pain, essentially love.

Our Mother in Heaven, who understood better than anyone else this saving truth, will help us understanding it too.

Mais avant tout cela, on portera la main sur vous et l'on vous persécutera; on vous livrera aux synagogues, on vous jettera en prison, on vous fera comparaître devant des rois et des gouverneurs, à cause de mon Nom. Ce sera pour vous l'occasion de rendre témoignage. Mettez-vous dans la tête que vous n'avez pas à vous soucier de votre défense. Moi-même, je vous inspirerai un langage et une sagesse à laquelle tous vos adversaires ne pourront opposer ni résistance ni contradiction. Vous serez livrés même par vos parents, vos frères, votre famille et vos amis, et ils feront mettre à mort certains d'entre vous. Vous serez détestés de tous, à cause de mon Nom. Mais pas un cheveu de votre tête ne sera perdu. C'est par votre persévérance que vous obtiendrez la vie.

Aujourd'hui, nous prêtons attention à cette phrase brève et incisive prononcée par notre Seigneur, phrase qui déchire notre âme et en se faisant nous amène à méditer sur l'importance de la persévérance: Pourquoi est-elle si importante? Pourquoi Jésus fait-Il dépendre notre salut de l'exercice de cette vertu?

Parce que disciple n'est pas plus haut placé que le maître -«Vous serez détestés de tous, à cause de mon Nom» (Lc 21,17)- et si le Seigneur a été un signe de contradiction, par conséquent nous, ses disciples, nous le serons également. Le Royaume des cieux sera décroché par ceux qui se font violence, ceux qui luttent contre les ennemis de l'âme, ceux qui livrent avec bravoure «cette belle bataille de paix et de l'amour» qu'est la vie chrétienne, comme disait Saint Josémarie Escriva. Il n'y a pas de roses sans épines, et la route qui mène au Ciel n'est pas un chemin sans difficultés. Voilà pourquoi sans la vertu cardinale de la force nos bonnes intentions finiraient par être stériles. La persévérance fait partie de la force. En effet, elle nous pousse à devenir suffisamment forts pour que nous puissions supporter avec joie les contradictions.

La persévérance au plus haut degré s'offre à nous sur la croix. C'est pour cela que la persévérance nous donne la liberté d'offrir la possession de nous-mêmes par amour. La promesse du Christ est indéfectible: «C'est par votre persévérance que vous obtiendrez la vie» (Lc 21,19), et il en est ainsi car ce qui nous sauve c'est la croix. C'est la force de l'amour qui nous donne à chacun la patience et l'acceptation joyeuse de la volonté de Dieu, quand celle-ci -comme c'est le cas sur la croix- s'oppose "dans les premiers instants" à notre pauvre volonté humaine.

Mais uniquement "dans les premiers instants", car après l'énergie débordante de la persévérance agit et nous fait comprendre la science difficile de la croix. Ainsi la persévérance engendre la patience, et celle-ci va beaucoup plus loin que la simple résignation. Plus encore, elle n'a rien à voir avec des attitudes stoïques. La patience contribue de manière décisive à nous faire comprendre que la Croix, bien au-delà de la douleur, est fondamentalement amour.

Que Notre Mère du Ciel, qui a compris mieux que personne cette vérité salvatrice, nous aide aussi à la comprendre.

(Lk 21,5-11): 

While some people were talking about the Temple, remarking that it was adorned with fine stonework and rich gifts, Jesus said to them, «The days will come when there shall not be left one stone upon another of all that you now admire; all will be torn down».

And they asked him, «Master, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is about to take place?». Jesus then said, «Take care not to be deceived, for many will come claiming my title and saying: ‘I am he, the Messiah; the time is at hand’. Do not follow them. When you hear of wars and troubled times, don't be frightened; for all this must happen first, even though the end is not so soon». And Jesus said, «Nations will fight each other and kingdom will oppose kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and plagues; in many places strange and terrifying signs from heaven will be seen».

The Application

The gospel message may apparently be frightening. However, for all the believers, it’s a consoling message, because Jesus is telling us, ‘not be afraid.’ Not to be afraid, because He is there with us, particularly in our difficult moment of life.

Jesus is orienting us all towards the true Temple, the Temple that He loves to stay. All the buildings, which are in truth, the true sign of our expression of our faith, symbols of our traditions, will certainly disappear. However, the heart of human being, where Jesus loves to reside, will remain for ever. Since our body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit, it is here that we should give much of our attention, than ruing behind outside.

Once this divine presence of God is assured, particularly by our holiness, then there will be peace and joy. The intensity of this joy is depending of our capacity to feel this divine presence. The more we open the window, the better will be the light inside. Just like the opening of the window, the purity of our heart and the capacity to identify this presence in us, will assure us the security that we search in our daily life. With God, there is nothing we may need.

Action of the day: Be a Temple of the Lord.

«There shall not be left one stone upon another»

Today, astounded, we listen to the Lord's severe warning: «The days will come when there shall not be left one stone upon another of all that you now admire; all will be torn down» (Lk 21:6). Jesus' words can be placed in the antipodes of the so called “indefinite human progress culture” or, if preferred, of the unstoppable evolution of some techno/scientific and political/military leaders of the human species.

Where from? Where to? This, nobody knows and nobody can tell, other than, in the last instance, a supposed eternal matter that denies God while, at the same time, usurping his attributes. Amazing, how they try to make us swallow it hook, line and sinker, who, on their side, refuse to accept the temporality and precarious status typical of our human condition!

As disciples of the Son of God-Made-Man, Jesus, we hear his very words and, while making them ours, we ponder over them. He is saying: «Take care not to be deceived!» (Lk 21:8). This is asserted by He, Who came to bear witness of the truth, while affirming that those belonging to the truth listen to his voice.

And He adds: «The end is not so soon» (Lk 21:9). Which means, on the one hand, that we still have time for salvation and we must take advantage of that; and, on the other, that the end will come, anyway. Yes, Jesus, will come «to judge the living and the dead», as we profess in the Creed.

Dear readers of Contemplating Today's Gospel, dear brothers and friends: a few verses further down this fragment I'm commenting now, Jesus encourages us and consoles us with these words that I repeat in his name: «By your endurance you will gain your souls!» (Lk 21:19).

By trying to be a warm and cordial echo of these words, and with the energy of a Christian hymn, we shall exhort one another: «Let us persevere, as we are already attaining the summit with our hands!».

Certains parlaient du Temple, admirant la beauté des pierres et les dons des fidèles. Jésus leur dit: «Ce que vous contemplez, des jours viendront où il n'en restera pas pierre sur pierre: tout sera détruit».

Ils lui demandèrent: «Maître, quand cela arrivera-t-il, et quel sera le signe que cela va se réaliser?». Jésus répondit: «Prenez garde de ne pas vous laisser égarer, car beaucoup viendront sous mon nom en disant: ‘C'est moi’, ou encore: ‘Le moment est tout proche’. Ne marchez pas derrière eux! Quand vous entendrez parler de guerres et de soulèvements, ne vous effrayez pas: il faut que cela arrive d'abord, mais ce ne sera pas tout de suite la fin». Alors Jésus ajouta: «On se dressera nation contre nation, royaume contre royaume. Il y aura de grands tremblements de terre, et çà et là des épidémies de peste et des famines; des faits terrifiants surviendront, et de grands signes dans le ciel».

L’Application

N’ayons pas peur. Voilà le message principal du Seigneur. Le Seigneur nous demande de vivre notre foi, non pas dans la peur et l’inquiétude, mai dans la liberté et dans la joie. Le plus que Dieu trouve en nous sa place, le plus nous seront heureux et joyeux.

Nous sommes déjà le Temple de l’Esprit Saint et donc gardons notre cœur pur pour que  le Seigneur ait une demeure digne. Puisque Dieu demeure en nous et à travers les hommes, parmi nous, il est important que nous ressentions sa présence toujours avec nous. Chaque rassemble du peuple de Dieu, dans une prière, nous verrons fortement cette présence divine.

Dieu nous a déjà dit que les temples vont disparaitre, mais sa demeure dans le cœur des hommes demeurera toujours. Nous devons construire ce Temple, une demeure digne pour le Seigneur. Que nous soyons par notre vie de sainteté cette demeure que Dieu désire, chez les hommes.

«Des jours viendront où il n'en restera pas pierre sur pierre»

Aujourd'hui, nous écoutons étonnés le sévère avertissement du Seigneur: «Ce que vous contemplez, des jours viendront où il n'en restera pas pierre sur pierre: tout sera détruit» (Lc 21,6). Ces paroles de Jésus sont aux antipodes d'une autre qui se nomme "culture du progrès infini de l'humanité" ou plutôt de quelques petits cerveaux technoscientifiques et politico-militaires de l'espèce humaine, en une imparable évolution.

À partir d'où? Jusqu'où? Ça, personne ne le sait ni ne peut le savoir, à l'exception, en dernière instance, d'une soi-disant matière éternelle qui nie Dieu en usurpant ses attributs. Comme ils essaient de nous faire communier à des roues de moulin ceux qui rejettent la communion avec la finitude et la précarité propres de la condition humaine!

Nous, les disciples du Fils de Dieu fait homme, de Jésus, nous écoutons ses paroles et, les faisant nôtre, nous les méditons. Voici ce qu'Il nous dit: «Prenez garde de ne pas vous laisser égarer» (Lc 21,8). C'est Celui qui est venu rendre témoignage à la vérité qui nous le dit, en affirmant que ceux qui sont dans la vérité écoutent sa voix.

Et voici encore qu'Il nous assure: «Ce ne sera pas tout de suite la fin» (Lc 21,9). Ce qui veut dire, d'un côté, que nous disposons d'un temps pour nous sauver et qu'il nous appartient d'en profiter; et, d'un autre côté, qu'en en tout cas la fin viendra. Oui, Jésus viendra «juger les vivants et les morts», comme nous le confessons dans le Credo.

Lecteurs de Contempler l'Évangile d'aujourd'hui, chers frères et amis: quelques versets plus loin, Jésus nous encourage et nous console par ces autres paroles qu'en son nom je vous répète: «Celui qui persévèrera jusqu’au bout sera sauvé» (Lc 21,19).

En une résonnance cordiale, exhortons-nous les uns les autres avec l'énergie d'un hymne chrétien catalan: «Persévérons, car nous touchons déjà la cime de la main!».

Nous fixons notre regard sur la Croix et restons en toute admiration et émerveillement, car nous avons un Dieu qui nous aime, est prêt même nous donné son Fils unique, pour que l’homme soit sauver. Saint Jean nous dit, « Il a envoyé son Fils unique, non pas nous juger, mais par Lui que le monde soit sauvé. » Le Salut que Dieu nous propose est visible sur la Croix, car elle-même devient désormais pour nous les croyants le chemin de la vie.

Dans la Croix l’inscription nous dit, ‘celui-ci est Roi des juifs’ et ce Roi est en train de sauver un homme qui s’est mis devant la miséricorde divine, en suppliant, «Jésus, souviens-toi de moi quand tu viendras inaugurer ton Règne». Il a bien compris que le Règne de Jésus n’est pas de ce monde. C’est un Règne où l’on entre par la conversion et réconciliation. Un Règne de vérité et de vie, Règne de sainteté et de grâce, Règne de justice, d’amour et de paix. Un Règne qui est naît du Sang et de l’eau qui jaillirent du côté de Jésus Christ. C’est aujourd’hui et avec moi, était la réponse du Seigneur. Que cette Parole sur la croix rayonne dans notre cœur, qu’elle nous donne cette espérance que le baptême nous a déjà assurée. Cette Croix nous a sauvés.

Notre foi chrétienne et son application quotidienne est étroitement liée à cet événement sur la croix. « Voici ta mère et voici ton fils » Ce Roi a établis sur la croix une nouvelle famille, une famille chrétienne qui écoute sa Parole, fidèle à son enseignement et une famille qui annonce à tout le monde, cette miséricorde et générosité divine, en vivant ce commandement d’amour dans sa vie quotidienne. « Dieu a tant aimé le monde………., aimez-vous les uns les autres, comme je vois ai aimé »

La communauté chrétienne se fond dans ce commandement d’amour divin. En accueillant les Maries qui souffrent injustement et les Jeans qui sont dans la tristesse dans nos quartiers, en pardonnant les uns les autres,  nous formons cette communauté ecclésiale, et nouvelle, qui prie, annonce et célèbre ensembles.  Par notre vie de témoignage nous rendons gloire à ce Dieu qui s’est donne encore aujourd’hui sur la croix, pour sauver le monde qui est soif d’amour et de miséricorde.

Il faut écouter ce Roi sur la croix, totalement défiguré, fatigué, cloué sans pouvoir bouger dans la peine, Il s’exprime en faisant confiance dans son Père, « Pourquoi m’as-tu abandonné. » J’ai besoin de toi, ton soutient, ta présence, ton écoute, essentiellement ta personne. Ce Christ, comme le pauvre Lazare, le fils d’Abraham, est toujours là, avec nous, devant nous, et parmi nous. Il faut jamais oublier l’histoire du salut, « Le Seigneur dit à Caïn : « Où est ton frère Abel ? »  La voix du sang de ton frère crie de la terre vers moi ! »

Nous sommes certainement entourés par un monde qui a entouré le Seigneur. « «N'es-tu pas le Messie? Sauve-toi toi-même, et nous avec!» Nous avons raison d’être en colère, une colère juste. Pourtant, on est invité aujourd’hui écouté le Seigneur, tourner nos regards vers les autres qui ont besoin de nous.

Justement, Jésus sur la Croix nous apprends à vivre notre vie. Tout subsiste en Lui, par Lui et pour Lui et nous nous associons volontairement à cette Royauté. Si nous restons fidèles à son amour, nous l’entendrons, «Amen, je te le déclare: aujourd'hui, avec moi, tu seras dans le Paradis  Confions tous au Seigneur, à ce Roi qui se trouve sur la Croix. Que nous vivions cette Royauté pleinement, sur la terre, Amen.

(Mt 12,46-50): 

While Jesus was still talking to the people, his mother and his brothers wanted to speak to him and they waited outside. So someone said to him, «Your mother and your brothers are just outside; they want to speak with you». Jesus answered, «Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?». Then He pointed to his disciples and said, «Look! Here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is for me brother, sister, or mother».

The Application

It is in knowing and doing the divine will that we become member of the divine family. Jesus is reminding us the way Mary was elevated, from an ordinary human being, into the Mother of God, simply by her fidelity.

Even today, we too are capable of being elevated just like her, by the divine grace, if we remain faithful to the commandment of love. Love one another just I have loved you.  The more we get closer to Mary, the better will be our accessibility to her son, because she will certainly lead us to her son. For that she continues to tell us, ‘do all that He asks you’.

Mary by this fidelity has become the first member of the Church of the Lord. While presenting her to the Temple, the parents were not aware of her immaculate conception, just like today, many of us are not aware the gifts the God has given to us while receiving the baptism. It is by our own faithfulness to the call to holiness, which we have received on the day of baptism that we accomplish, just like her, the divine will and discover, how closely God accompanies us and blesses us. The more our life becomes God centric, the better will be our accomplishment of divine will. Mary was carrying the light of Baptism, right from her birth by doing the will of the Father and let us also, by doing the divine will, be a light of the Lord, to the world.

Action of the day: Be holy and faithful to the baptism.

Today the Church remembers the moment when the little Mary completely surrendered her heart to the Most High. Holy Mary was full of grace and without any hint of sin from the first moment of her conception in her mother’s womb, St. Anne. Evidently she was not aware of this status, but she certainly was fully unfailing.

The Christian tradition is convinced that Mary, being very young, decided to fully dedicate herself in soul and body to God. In fact, this is why in such day as today, but in 543, in Jerusalem, the dedication of the church of Holy Mary la Nueva took place.

How singular the ways of God are! Quite often so subtle but always effective. In ancient times it was totally unthinkable that a girl should not be given in marriage. A "single" girl, she alone, but what Mary intended was rather the opposite. So, these are the ways of the Holy Spirit! The young Mary was betrothed to Joseph. No doubt the Divine Providence had prepared a holy man – whom we also imagine young – who would be able to take care of Mary "as God commands."

We do not know how, but we can assume that Mary and Joseph had agreed to give themselves completely to God by sharing a "virgin marriage" (something also unthinkable). If it was not through this peculiar way, how could the virginity of St. Mary be protected? Surely St. Joseph was the only Jewish boy capable of accepting the mission of protecting Mary's virginity through a virgin marriage. Both of them, as brothers, fully dedicated to the will of God.

Finally, it turned out that such a peculiar marriage - virginal - was the precise instrument God had prepared to "send" His Son "born of a woman, born under the Law" (Gal 4:4). "Mary first conceived Christ in her heart before conceiving Him in her womb" (St. Augustine). We too, in imitation of St. Mary, can conceive Jesus in our hearts through faith and obedience to God, since «Whoever does what my Father in heaven wants is my brother and sister and mother» (Matt. 12:50).
