Gospel text

(Lk 12,39-48): 

Jesus said to his disciples, «Pay attention to this: If the master of the house had known at what time the thief would come, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect».

Peter said, «Lord, did you tell this parable only for us, or for everyone?». And the Lord replied, «Imagine, then, the wise and faithful steward whom the master sets over his other servants to give them food rations at the proper time. Fortunate is this servant if his master on coming home finds him doing his work. Truly, I say to you, the master will put him in charge of all his property. But it may be that the steward thinks: ‘My Lord delays in coming’, and he begins to abuse the menservants and the servant girls, eating and drinking and getting drunk. Then the master will come on a day he does not expect him and at an hour he doesn't know. He will discharge his servant and number him among the unreliable.

»The servant who knew his master's will, but did not prepare to do what his master wanted, will be punished with sound blows; but the one who did what deserved a punishment without knowing it shall receive fewer blows. Much will be required of the one who has been given much, and more will be asked of the one entrusted with more».

The Application

If we wish to imitate Jesus, then we should search the motivating spirit in the ministry of Jesus on this earth. He was always inspired by the will of the Father, and accomplishing this Will did give Him immense joy and profound satisfaction. For us today, this God is not an impersonal God, but very much affective God, who loves us and cares for us. If we wish to be happy, just like Jesus, then we should give attention to the will of the Father of Jesus.

It is in this love that He has entrusted to us the whole world, particularly the poor and infirmities, who are in need of our help. From our part, we are called to represent the same loving and forgiving God, to these people around us, by our words and deeds. The image that God has given for our better way of accomplishing the mission entrusted to us is, ‘an image of a faithful servant’, who will give joy to the Master, when He find us faithful.  Are we a faithful servant of God?

Today, upon reading this fragment of the Gospel, we realize that each person is an administrator: when we are born, we all receive a heredity of genes and capabilities to fulfill ourselves in our life. We discover that these capabilities, and our very life, are just a gift from God, inasmuch we have not done anything to deserve them. They are the personal, unique and nontransferable gift, which bestows our personality on us. They are the “talents” which the same Jesus speaks about (cf. Mt 25:15), and we should make them grow during our life span. Capabilities for our complete self-realization, but with the additional possibility to communicate and share these values with each other.

Jesus finally ends the first paragraph by saying: «For the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect» (Lk 12:40). It is our hope the Lord Jesus will come at the end of time; but, now and here, Jesus also appears in our lives, in the simplicity and in the complexity of every moment. It is now then, with the Lord's strength, we can live his Kingdom. St. Augustine reminds us in the words of the Psalm 33:12: «Happy the nation whose God is the Lord, the people chosen as his very own», so that we can be fully aware of it while belonging to this kinship.

«You also must be ready» (Lk 12:40), this exhortation implies a call to fidelity, never submitted to selfishness. It is our responsibility to know “how to react” to the goods we have received with our life. «Knowing his master's will» (Lk 12:47), is what we identify as our “conscience”, and it is what makes us responsible for our actions. It is a matter of justice and love on our side, to generously respond to Mankind, and towards each one of its living beings.

«Vous le savez bien: si le maître de maison connaissait l'heure où le voleur doit venir, il ne laisserait pas percer le mur de sa maison. Vous aussi, tenez-vous prêts: c'est à l'heure où vous n'y penserez pas que le Fils de l'homme viendra».

Pierre dit alors: «Seigneur, cette parabole s'adresse-t-elle à nous, ou à tout le monde?». Le Seigneur répond: «Quel est donc l'intendant fidèle et sensé à qui le maître confiera la charge de ses domestiques pour leur donner, en temps voulu, leur part de blé? Heureux serviteur, que son maître, en arrivant, trouvera à son travail. Vraiment, je vous le déclare: il lui confiera la charge de tous ses biens. Mais si le même serviteur se dit: ‘Mon maître tarde à venir’, et s'il se met à frapper serviteurs et servantes, à manger, à boire et à s'enivrer, son maître viendra le jour où il ne l'attend pas et à l'heure qu'il n'a pas prévue; il se séparera de lui et le mettra parmi les infidèles.

»Le serviteur qui, connaissant la volonté de son maître, n'a pourtant rien préparé, ni accompli cette volonté, recevra un grand nombre de coups. Mais celui qui ne la connaissait pas, et qui a mérité des coups pour sa conduite, n'en recevra qu'un petit nombre. A qui l'on a beaucoup donné, on demandera beaucoup; à qui l'on a beaucoup confié, on réclamera davantage».

L’Application

La vie chrétienne est une vie de pèlerinage, d’ici vers le Seigneur, non pas seul, mais avec les autres. Puisqu’elle est un voyage, la vigilance est exigée. C’est pourquoi chaque moment de la vie, chaque étape, chaque rencontre humaine, chaque virage sont important pour nous. Nous ne pouvons jamais les ignorer, même si nous nous trouvons sur la route sans unique, une route bien protégée et assurée. Il faut savoir vivre avec les autres avec un respect mutuel.

L’image que le Seigneur nous présente aujourd’hui est celle d’un serviteur. Un serviteur fidèle fera plaisir à son maître. Il est capable de représenter son Maître à travers ses œuvres. Cette fidélité à la volonté de notre Maître est une manière de montrer notre reconnaissance de son amour et de sa générosité.

Sommes-nous les serviteurs fidèles ?

Aujourd'hui, avec la lecture de ce fragment de l'Évangile, nous pouvons nous rendre compte que chaque personne doit être un administrateur: quand nous naissons, nous recevons tous un patrimoine avec nos gènes et facultés pour nous réaliser dans la vie. Nous découvrons, alors, que ces potentialités, et même notre vie, ce ne sont qu'un don gratuit de Dieu, car nous n'avons rien fait pour les obtenir. Ce sont un cadeau personnel, unique et intransférable, qui façonne notre personnalité. Ce sont les "talents" dont le même Jésus nous en parle (cf. Mt 25,15), les qualités que nous devons soigner et cultiver tout au long de notre existence.

«C'est à l'heure où vous n'y penserez pas que le Fils de l'homme viendra» (Lc 12,40), dit Jésus dans le premier paragraphe. Notre espérance réside dans la venue du Seigneur Jésus à la fin du temps; mais maintenant et ici, Jésus se fait aussi présent à nous dans notre vie, dans la simplicité et complexité de chaque moment. C'est aujourd'hui lorsque, avec la force du Seigneur, nous pouvons vivre son Royaume. Saint Augustin nous les rappelle dans les paroles du Psalm 32,12: «Heureux le peuple dont le Seigneur est le Dieu, heureuse la nation qu'il s'est choisie pour domaine!», afin que nous puissions en être conscients, et devenir part de cette nation.

«Vous aussi, tenez-vous prêts» (Lc 12,40), cette exhortation représentant un appel à la fidélité qui n'est jamais subordonnée à l'égoïsme. Nous sommes responsables de savoir comment "faire valoir" les biens que nous avons reçus avec notre vie. «Connaissant la volonté de son maître» (Lc 12,47), c'est ce que nous appelons "notre conscience", et c'est ce qui nous fait dignement responsables de nos actes. La réponse généreuse de notre part envers l'humanité, vers chacun des êtres vivants, c'est quelque chose juste et pleine d'amour.

(Lk 12,35-38): 

Jesus said to his disciples, «Be ready, dressed for service, and keep your lamps lit, like people waiting for their master to return from the wedding. As soon as he comes and knocks, they will open to him. Happy are those servants whom the master finds wide-awake when he comes. Truly, I tell you, he will put on an apron and have them sit at table and he will wait on them. Happy are those servants if he finds them awake when he comes at midnight or daybreak!».

Today, we must pay our individual attention to Jesus' words: «Be ready, dressed for service, and keep your lamps lit, like people waiting for their master to return from the wedding. As soon as he comes and knocks, they will open to him» (Lk 12:36). What a joy to realize that, even though unworthy and sinner, it will up to me to open the door for the Lord, when He finally comes! Yes, at the hour of death, I will open the door to Heaven or I will close it; nobody will be doing it on my behalf. «We can be persuaded God will ask us to render accounts not only of our deeds and words, but also of how we have been spending our time» (St. Gregory of Nazianzus).

To be waiting wide-awake at my door for him to arrive is quite simple, and I can certainly do it. I must not be inattentive. To be inattentive is to forget the final purpose, to wish to go to Heaven, but with no operative will; it is like building castles in the air, without having worthy commitments supporting our yearning. To wear your apron means to be in the kitchen, duly prepared for whatever comes. My good father, who was a farmer, used to say that you couldn't sow if the earth was “angry”; for a good sowing you are to actually walk in the fields by caressing the seeds.

Christians are never lost castaways, for they know where they come from, where they are going and how to get there; they know their destination, the means to reach it and the difficulties to be found along the way. To bear all this in mind will help us to be watchful and open the door when our Lord will warn us. Exhortations to vigilance and responsibility are often repeated in Jesus' preachings for two clear reasons: because Jesus loves us and He “watches” over us; he, who loves, does not fall asleep. And, because the devil, our enemy, keeps on tempting us. Thinking of heaven and hell should not detract us from our duties down here, but it is a healthy and incarnated thought, and it deserves the Lord's congratulations: «Happy are those servants if he finds them awake when he comes at midnight or daybreak!» (Lk 12:38). O Jesus, help me to be all my life watchful and vigilant and keep loving you.

Heureux les serviteurs que le maître, à son arrivée, trouvera en train de veiller. Amen, je vous le dis: il prendra la tenue de service, les fera passer à table et les servira chacun à son tour. S'il revient vers minuit ou plus tard encore et qu'il les trouve ainsi, heureux sont-ils!».

Aujourd'hui, il faut prêter attention aux paroles de Jésus: «Soyez comme des gens qui attendent leur maître à son retour des noces, pour lui ouvrir dès qu'il arrivera et frappera à la porte» (Lc 12,36). Quelle joie de découvrir que même si je suis pécheur et insignifiant, j'ouvrirai moi-même la porte au Seigneur quand il frappera à ma porte! Et oui, au moment de la mort, c'est moi-même qui ouvrirai ou fermerai la porte au Seigneur, personne ne peut le faire pour moi. «Il faut se persuader que Dieu nous demandera des comptes non seulement de nos actes et paroles mais aussi de la façon dont nous avons utilisé notre temps» (Saint Grégoire de Naziance).

Être devant la porte et ouvrir les yeux est un exposé clé et qui est à ma portée. Je ne peux pas me distraire. Se distraire c'est d'oublier notre objectif, vouloir aller au ciel, mais sans un engagement opérationnel, c'est comme faire des bulles de savon, sans une volonté engagée et qu'on peut évaluer. Se mettre un tablier veut dire être dans la cuisine en train de préparer jusqu'au dernier détail. Mon père qui était agriculteur, disait qu'on ne peut pas semer la terre qui n'est pas prête; pour faire une bonne semence il faut parcourir le champ et semer avec attention.

Le chrétien n'est pas un naufragé sans boussole, il sait d'où il vient, où il va et il sait comment y arriver; il connaît l'objectif, il connaît les moyens pour s'y rendre ainsi que les difficultés pour y arriver. Ne pas perdre cela de vue nous aidera à être vigilants et à ouvrir la porte au Seigneur le moment venu. L'appel à la vigilance et à la responsabilité se répète souvent dans la prédication de Jésus pour deux raisons évidentes: l'une est que Jésus nous aime et "veille" sur nous et l'autre est que celui qui aime ne s'endort pas. Et parce que le diable nous tente continuellement. La pensée du ciel ou de l'enfer ne doit pas nous distraire de nos obligations de tous les jours, mais c'est une pensée salutaire et incarnée qui mérite notre louange au Seigneur: «S'il revient vers minuit ou plus tard encore et qu'il les trouve ainsi, heureux sont-ils!» (Lc 12,38). Jésus aide-moi à vivre dans l'attente et à être vigilant chaque jour en t'aimant toujours.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 12,13-21): 

Du milieu de la foule, un homme demanda à Jésus: «Maître, dis à mon frère de partager avec moi notre héritage». Jésus lui répondit: «Qui m'a établi pour être votre juge ou pour faire vos partages?». Puis, s'adressant à la foule: «Gardez-vous bien de toute âpreté au gain; car la vie d'un homme, fût-il dans l'abondance, ne dépend pas de ses richesses».

Et il leur dit cette parabole: «Il y avait un homme riche, dont les terres avaient beaucoup rapporté. Il se demandait: ‘Que vais-je faire? Je ne sais pas où mettre ma récolte’. Puis il se dit: ‘Voici ce que je vais faire: je vais démolir mes greniers, j'en construirai de plus grands et j'y entasserai tout mon blé et tout ce que je possède. Alors je me dirai à moi-même: Te voilà avec des réserves en abondance pour de nombreuses années. Repose-toi, mange, bois, jouis de l'existence’. Mais Dieu lui dit: ‘Tu es fou: cette nuit même, on te redemande ta vie. Et ce que tu auras mis de côté, qui l'aura?’. Voilà ce qui arrive à celui qui amasse pour lui-même, au lieu d'être riche en vue de Dieu».

«Car la vie d'un homme, fût-il dans l'abondance, ne dépend pas de ses richesses»

Aujourd'hui, si nous ne nous bouchons pas les oreilles et ne fermons pas les yeux, l'Évangile nous ébranlera par sa clarté: «Gardez-vous bien de toute âpreté au gain; car la vie d'un homme, fût-il dans l'abondance, ne dépend pas de ses richesses» (Lc 12,15). Qu'est-ce qui assure la vie de l'homme?

Nous savons bien ce qui assure la vie de Jésus, car Il nous l'a dit: «Comme le Père a la vie en lui-même, ainsi a-t-il donné au Fils d'avoir la vie en lui-même» (Jn 5,26). Nous savons que la vie de Jésus non seulement procède du Père, mais consiste à faire Sa volonté, car telle est sa nourriture, et la volonté du Père revient à réaliser sa grande œuvre de salut parmi les hommes, en donnant sa vie pour ses amis, signe du plus parfait amour. La vie de Jésus est donc une vie totalement reçue du Père et entièrement livrée au Père et, par amour pour le Père, aux hommes. La vie humaine pourra-t-elle, dans ces conditions, se suffire à elle-même? Pourra-t-on nier que la vie est un don, que nous l'avons reçue et que, ne serait-ce que pour cela, nous devons rendre grâce? «Que nul ne se croît maître de sa propre vie» (Saint Jérôme).

Dans cette perspective, il ne reste qu'à nous demander: Quel sens peut avoir notre vie si elle se replie sur elle-même, si elle se complaît à dire: «Mon âme, te voilà avec des réserves en abondance pour de nombreuses années. Repose-toi, mange, bois, jouis de l'existence» (Lc 12,19)? Si la vie de Jésus est un don reçu et donné toujours dans l'amour, notre vie —que nous ne pouvons nier avoir reçue— doit se convertir, en suivant celle de Jésus, en un don total à Dieu et à nos frères, car «qui aime sa vie la perd» (Jn 12,25).

La vie chrétienne doit être une vie totalement immergée en Dieu. C’est une vie d’espérance et de joie. Pourtant, il faut reconnaitre,  que Dieu n’enlève pas nos ennemies ou nos difficultés quotidiennes ou nos soucis de la vie. Ils seront là  toujours avec nous. Même si Dieu n’enlève pas les soucis de la vie, Il nous donne pourtant la grâce et le courage pour que nous luttions contre les ennemies de l‘amour et de la paix.

 Puisque par notre engagement positif, nous devenons les collaborateurs de l’accomplissement de la volonté divine, nous sommes précieusement protégés et accompagnés par l’Esprit Saint. C’est pourquoi, sans être découragé, individuellement et communautairement, nous annonçons  ensembles la Parole de Dieu,  prions et célébrons ensembles en nous nous mettant au service du peuple de Dieu dans la joie.  

Puisque Dieu est avec nous, nous ne sommes pas seuls. Nous sommes soutenu par le peuple de Dieu et pour cela,  nous gardons la foi dans la joie, sans être submergés ni par les événements du présents, et ni de la future. Nous nous avançons ensembles, avec les soutiens de nos frères et sœurs, comme Moïse qui étaient soutenu par Aaron et Hour.

Que notre fidélité au Seigneur, ne soit pas conditionnée par nos ressentiments de dons reçus ou les prières exhaussées par le Seigneur, et qu’elle soit conditionnée  en revanche par la bonté et par la générosité divine, même si nous ne sommes pas capables de  les ressentir quotidiennement.  

Lorsque les doutes nous envahissent, la Parole du Seigneur et les écritures spirituelles peuvent nous aider à retrouver notre foi et notre joie.   Saint Paul a donné un très bon conseil à Timothée, « grâce à la Parole du Seigneur inspiré, qui se trouve  dans les écritures sacré, l'homme de Dieu sera bien armé, il sera pourvu de tout ce qu'il faut pour faire un bon travail. »

Dans cette parabole du jour, Jésus nous invite à faire confiance en Dieu avec patience et persévérance dans notre prière, comme Moïse. Egalement il aborde aussi, le sujet de la justice, qui est nôtre. La justice sans Charité et patience ne peut pas donner un bon résultat. La patience et la charité de cette femme envers ce juge de la parabole se trouve dans sa propre confiance dans cet homme, qu’il est capable de me faire la justice, même si son comportement était juste au contraire.

Généralement  nous disons que Dieu ne m’écoute pas, il ne m’entende pas. En vérité, n’est-ce pas nous qui ne l’écoutons pas ? N’est-ce pas nous qui n’arrivons pas avoir un dialogue avec lui afin que nous puissions de le comprendre et de l’aimer ? Ne perdons pas notre confiance en Dieu, ne perdons pas notre  courage, et notre foi. C’est Jésus qui nous a promis, « il leur fera justice » mais trouvera-t-il la foi chez-nous ?

The Christian life should be  a life totally immersed in God. It is a life of hope and joy. However, we must recognize that God does not remove our enemies or our daily difficulties or our worries of life. They will always be there with us. Even though God does not remove the worries of life, He gives us however  the grace and the courage to fight the enemies of love and peace.

 Since through our positive commitment we become collaborators in fulfilling the divine will, we are preciously protected and accompanied by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, without being discouraged, individually and communally, we announce the Word of God together, pray and celebrate together, serving the people of God with joy.

Since God is with us, we are not alone. We are supported by the people of God and for that we keep the faith in joy, without being overwhelmed by the events of the present, nor of the future. We move forward together, with the support of our brothers and sisters, like Moses who was supported by Aaron and Hour.

May our fidelity to the Lord not be conditioned by our resentments of received gifts or the prayers listened by the Lord. In contrary let it be conditioned on the other hand by the goodness and the generosity of God, even if we are not able to feel it daily.

When doubts invade us, the Word of the Lord and the spiritual writings can help us to find our faith and joy. Saint Paul gave a very good advice to Timothy, "thanks to the inspired Word of the Lord, which is found in the holy scriptures, the man of God will be well armed, he will be provided with all that is necessary to make a good work. "

In this parable of the day, Jesus invites us to trust God with patience and perseverance in our prayer, like Moses. He also addresses the subject of justice, which is ours. Justice without Charity and patience cannot give a good result. The patience and charity of this woman to this judge of the parable is in her own confidence in this man, that he is able to do me justice, even if his behaviour was just the opposite.

Generally we say that God does not listen to me, he does not hear me. In truth, isn’t we who are not listening to God? Isn’t it true that we are not able to have a dialogue with him so that we can understand and love him? Let's not lose our trust in God, do not lose our courage, and our faith. It is Jesus who promised us, "He will do them justice" but will he find faith in us?

Gospel text

(Lk 10,1-9): 

The Lord appointed seventy-two other disciples and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place, where He himself was to go. And He said to them, «The harvest is rich, but the workers are few. So you must ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers to his harvest. Courage! I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Set off without purse or bag or sandals; and do not stop at the homes of those you know.

»Whatever house you enter, first bless them saying: ‘Peace to this house’. If a friend of peace lives there, the peace shall rest upon that person. But if not, the blessing will return to you. Stay in that house eating and drinking at their table, for the worker deserves to be paid. Do not move from house to house. When they welcome you in any town, eat what they offer you. Heal the sick who are there and say to them: ‘The kingdom of God has drawn near to you’».

The Application

We are all the chosen and appointed ones. We have the responsibility of continuing the legacy of the Apostles and be the promoters of peace and justice in the world. In our mission we should be aware that we are representing Jesus and the peace which we wish to establish, is not of human values system, rather has a divine origin, the Peace of Jesus.

This peace is possible only when we learn to respond to the basic human needs, such as food, shelter for every individual and when there is a sincere desire of sharing and strengthening those who are weak.

As called and sent, to accomplish this divine will, we have to depend up on God alone and learn to surrender before God our freedom. It is in this perfect surrendering that we become the true disciples of Jesus.

Action of the day: act as the disciple of Jesus, called and sent.

«The kingdom of God has drawn near to you»

Today, in St. Luke's feast —the Evangelist of Christ's gentleness and meekness— the Church proclaims this Gospel where the main traits Christ's apostles must have, are established.

In the first place, the apostles have been directly called by the Lord, and mandated by him, to go out on his behalf: it is Jesus himself who calls whom He wants to entrust with a concrete mission! «The Lord appointed seventy-two other disciples and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place, where He himself was to go» (Lk 10:1).

And, because the apostle has been delegated by the Lord, he is, on top of everything, entirely dependent upon him. «Set off without purse or bag or sandals; and do not stop at the homes of those you know» (Lk 10:4). Jesus' prohibition to his disciples mostly implies they must completely rely on their Lord Jesus, abandoning themselves to him, up to the point of leaving in his hands whatever is most essential for their lives: the Lord, who takes care of the iris flowers in the prairie and feeds the little birds, wants his disciples to look, in the first place, for the Kingdom of Heaven and not, instead, «to seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and not worry anymore. All the nations of the world seek for these things, and your Father knows that you need them» (Lk 12:29-30).

The apostles are still who prepare the path for their Lord, by announcing his peace and healing the sick, thus, evidencing the coming of his Kingdom. The apostle's task is, therefore, of paramount importance in and for the life of the Church, because the future welcome of the Master amongst men will depend upon it.

The best testimony of the feast of an Evangelist —who has narrated the announcement of the Good News—, is to make us think of the apostolic and evangelizing dimension of our Christian life.

Après cela, le Seigneur en désigna encore soixante-douze, et il les envoya deux par deux devant lui dans toutes les villes et localités où lui-même devait aller. Il leur dit: «La moisson est abondante, mais les ouvriers sont peu nombreux. Priez donc le maître de la moisson d'envoyer des ouvriers pour sa moisson. Allez! Je vous envoie comme des agneaux au milieu des loups. N'emportez ni argent, ni sac, ni sandales, et ne vous attardez pas en salutations sur la route.

»Dans toute maison où vous entrerez, dites d'abord: ‘Paix à cette maison’. S'il y a là un ami de la paix, votre paix ira reposer sur lui; sinon, elle reviendra sur vous. Restez dans cette maison, mangeant et buvant ce que l'on vous servira; car le travailleur mérite son salaire. Ne passez pas de maison en maison. Dans toute ville où vous entrerez et où vous serez accueillis, mangez ce qu'on vous offrira. Là, guérissez les malades, et dites aux habitants: ‘Le règne de Dieu est tout proche de vous’».

L’Application

Nous sommes les missionnaires de la Paix et que cette paix demeure en nous. En ce jour de la fête de saint Luc, nous sommes invités à revivre cet appel divin et à continuer la mission confiée aux Apôtres.  Une bonne fête.

Aujourd'hui, jour de la Saint Luc —l'Évangéliste de la douceur du Christ—, l'Église proclame cet Évangile dans lequel se présentent les caractéristiques centrales de l'apôtre du Christ.

L'apôtre est, en premier lieu, celui qui a été appelé par le Seigneur, désigné par Lui-même, en vue d'être envoyé en son nom: c'est Jésus qui appelle qui Il veut pour lui confier une mission concrète!: «Le Seigneur en désigna encore soixante-douze, et il les envoya deux par deux devant lui dans toutes les villes et localités où lui-même devait aller» (Lc 10, 1).

L’apôtre, ayant été appelé par Dieu, est aussi celui qui dépend totalement de Lui. «N'emportez ni argent, ni sac, ni sandales, et ne vous attardez pas en salutations sur la route» (Lc 10,4). Cette interdiction de Jésus à ses disciples indique, surtout, qu'ils doivent laisser entre ses mains ce qui est essentiel pour vivre: le Seigneur, qui habille l'iris des champs et nourrit les oiseaux, veut que ses disciples cherchent, d'abord le Règne des cieux plutôt que: «(…) ne vous mettez pas en quête de ce que vous mangerez ou ce que vous boirez, et ne soyez pas anxieux. C'est de tout cela, en effet, que les païens du monde sont en quête; mais votre Père sait que vous avez besoin de cela» (Lc 12,29-30).

L'apôtre est également celui qui prépare le chemin du Seigneur, annonçant sa paix, guérissant les malades et manifestant ainsi la venue du Règne. Le devoir de l'apôtre est donc central tant dans la vie de l'Église que pour elle, car de cela dépend le futur accueil du Maître parmi les hommes.

Le meilleur témoignage que peut nous offrir la fête d'un Évangéliste, de celui qui a raconté l'annonce de la Bonne Nouvelle, est celui de nous faire devenir plus conscients de la dimension apostolique-évangélisatrice de notre vie chrétienne.

Gospel text

(Lk 11,47-54): 

Jesus said to the Pharisees, «A curse is on you, for you build memorials to the prophets your ancestors killed. So you approve and agree with what your ancestors did. Is it not so? They got rid of the prophets, and now you can build!. The Wisdom of God also said, ‘I will send prophets and apostles and this people will kill and persecute some of them’. But the present generation will have to answer for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the foundation of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was murdered between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, the people of this time will have to answer for them all. A curse is on you, teachers of the Law, for you have taken the key of knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you prevented others from entering».

As Jesus left that place, the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees began to harass him, asking him endless questions, setting traps to catch him in something he might say.

The Application

The human being generally get interested in all that have some advantage for him, and tries to achieve it, or accomplish it, the best way possible. There is no wrong in this approach. The danger is, it is in this ambitious behaviour and attitude, and he fails to see the ‘other’ who is struggling to come up in life. Once up in life, he forgets the past and walks as if the perfect person in our society.

Jesus is warning us of this hypocrite attitude and asks us to have an examination of conscience which may help us to know our past and get converted and be reconciled with God.

Though our laws are good, He is reminding us the best way of living our baptismal vocation is, by putting in practice, the divine law of love and forgiveness. It is here we get reconciled with the past evil life and look forward in hope and charity.  

Action of the day: Be humble and open for the newness of life.

Today, we may mull over the meaning, acceptance and treatment given to the prophets: «I will send prophets and apostles and this people will kill and persecute some of them» (Lk 11:49). They were persons of any social or religious condition that received the divine message and were imbibed by it; driven by the Holy Spirit, they communicated it with signs and words intelligible in their own time. It was a message conveyed by means of discourses, not very laudable, generally, or by feats, almost always, difficult to accept. A characteristic of the prophecy is its discomfort. The gift is rather inconvenient for the recipient, as, deep inside, it hurts, while being quite embarrassing for the environment, that today, thanks to the Net or the satellites, can be divulged all over the world.

Prophet's contemporaries pretend to condemn him to silence, and they slander him, discredit him, and so on until he dies. It is when that moment finally arrives that it is time to build a memorial and pay homage to him, as he will not be a nuisance anymore for anyone. At present, we also have some prophets who enjoy universal reputation. Mother Therese, John XXIII, Monsignor Romero... Do we remember what they postulated and expected from us?, do we carry out what they showed us? Our generation will have to render accounts for the ozone layer we have managed to deplete, for wasting water resources, but also for forgetting that which our prophets have told us.

There still are persons pretending “the right to exclusive knowledge”, that —in the best of cases— are willing to share with their kinship only, who allow them to be well set up in their success and fame. Persons who do not let in those who try to enter the field of cognition, lest they get to know as much as themselves and move on ahead of them: «A curse is on you, teachers of the Law, for you have taken the key of knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you prevented others from entering» (Lk 11:52).

Now, as in Jesus' times, there are many who analyze phrases and study texts to discredit whoever may inconvenience them with their words: do we also do the same? «There is nothing more dangerous than to judge the things of God with human discourses» (St. John Crysostom).
