Gospel text (Mt 10,1-7):

Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority over the unclean spirits to drive them out and to heal every disease and sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first Simon, called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew, the tax collector; James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon, the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, the man who would betray him. Jesus sent these twelve on mission with the instruction: «Do not visit pagan territory and do not enter a Samaritan town. Go instead to the lost sheep of the people of Israel. Go and proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near’».

Today, the Gospel shows us Jesus sending his Apostles on a mission: «Jesus sent these twelve on mission with these instructions...» (Mt 10:5). The twelve make up the “Apostolic College”, that is “missionary”. The Church, in its earthly pilgrimage, is a Missionary Community, as its origin lies in the fulfillment of the mission of the Son and the Holy Spirit, following God Father's divine intentions. In the same way as Peter and the other Apostles, by institution of our Lord, constituted a single Apostolic College, the Roman Pontiff, Peter's successor, and the Bishops, successors of the Apostles, form a body which has the duty to announce the Gospel everywhere.

Among the disciples sent on mission we find those with an outstanding position, given by Christ, and a greater responsibility, such as Peter; and others, as Thaddaeus, whom we practically know nothing about; however, the Gospels, which communicate Good News, were not intended to satisfy our curiosity. On our side, we are supposed to pray for all the bishops, for the famous and for the not so famous ones, while living in communion with them: «See that you all follow the bishop as Jesus Christ follows the Father and the presbytery as you would the apostles...» (St. Ignatious of Antioch). Jesus was not looking for cultivated people, but simply for people who were available, willing and able to follow him to the end. This means that, as a Christian, I must also feel responsible of a part of Jesus' plan of salvation. Do I keep away from evil? Do I help my fellow-men?

As their mission was just beginning, Jesus hurries to give them instructions with some limitations: «Do not visit pagan territory and do not enter a Samaritan town. Go instead to the lost sheep of the people of Israel. Go and proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near’» (Mt 10:5-6). Today we must do what we can, with the certainty that God is calling all pagans and Samaritans in another phase of the missionary work.

Gospel text

(Mt 9,32-38):

Some people brought to Jesus a man who was dumb because he was possessed by a demon. When the demon was driven out, the dumb man began to speak. The crowds were astonished and said, «Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel». (But the Pharisees said, «He drives away demons with the help of the prince of demons»).

Jesus went around all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom, and He cured every sickness and disease. When He saw the crowds he was moved with pity, for they were harassed and helpless like sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to his disciples, «The harvest is abundant but the workers are only few. Ask the master of the harvest to send workers to gather his harvest».

The Application

The way we look at people helps us to understand our own interiority. If we see everywhere evil, then we are filled with evil. Good people see good in others, even in their enemies. Since Jesus is filled with compassion and love, He continues to do good. Can we learn from Jesus to ignore the enemies and concentrate in doing good to people?

«Ask the master of the harvest to send workers to gather his harvest»

Fr. Joan SOLÀ i Triadú
(Girona, Spain)

Today, the Gospel speaks of the man who was dumb because he was possessed, and of how his healing provoked different reactions between the crowd and the Pharisees who, in the face of prodigious evidence, nobody could deny, they attributed it to devilish powers «He drives away demons with the help of the prince of demons» (Mt 9:34). Instead, the crowd marvels: «Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel» (Mt 9:33). When referring to this passage St. John Chrysostom, says: «What the Pharisees truly resented was the crowds were considering Jesus superior, not only to those existing then, but to all that had ever existed».

However, the Pharisees' animadversion did not worry Jesus in the least; He faithfully went on with his mission. Not only, but before the evidence those Israel guides, instead of looking after their flock and shepherd it, what they did was to mislay it, Jesus felt sorry for those tired and depressed crowds without a true shepherd to look after them. That crowds are grateful for a good leadership and yearn for it, can be appreciated when we looked at the pastoral visits of St. John Paul II to the different places in the world. How he manages to gather immense crowds around him! How they listen to him, particularly our youth! And this, despite the Pope does not make discounts, for he preaches the Gospel with all its requirements.

St. Josemaria Escriva says: «If we should be consequent with our faith, when we look around us and contemplate the scenery of history and our world, we could not but feel that, the same feelings that animated Jesus' heart, are also invading ours», which would take us to a very generous apostolic task. But the disproportion amongst the crowds waiting for the preaching of the Good News of the Kingdom of God and the scarcity of ready workers to preach it, is quite evident. At the end of the text of the Gospel, though, Jesus gives us the solution: to ask the master of the harvest to send workers to his fields (cf. Mt 9:38).

Abbé Joan SOLÀ i Triadú
(Girona, Espagne)

Gospel text

(Mt 9,18-26):

While Jesus was speaking to them, an official of the synagogue came up to him, bowed before him and said, «My daughter has just died, but come and place your hands on her, and she will live». Jesus stood up and followed him with his disciples. Then a woman who had suffered from a severe bleeding for twelve years came up from behind and touched the edge of his cloak. For she thought, «If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed». Jesus turned, saw her and said, «Courage, my daughter, your faith has saved you». And from that moment the woman was cured.

When Jesus arrived at the official's house and saw the flute players and the excited crowd, He said, «Get out of here! The girl is not dead. She is only sleeping!». And they laughed at him. But once the crowd had been turned out, Jesus went in and took the girl by the hand, and she stood up. The news of this spread through the whole area.

The Application

Two individuals are given to us as model for our faith. It’s important that we verify the depth of our faith. Are we still asking the Lord the proof of His love and compassion, or we simply believe that He is a good and compassionate God. Happy are those who believe without seeing!

«Your faith has saved you»

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench
(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, the liturgy of the Word invites us to admire two splendid manifestations of faith. So splendid were they that they deserved to move Jesus Christ's heart —immediately!— provoking his reaction. Our Lord does not allow himself to be won over in generosity!

«My daughter has just died, but come and place your hands on her, and she will live» (Mt 9:18). We could almost say that a strong faith as such can “oblige” God. But, He likes that kind of obligation. The other testimony of faith of today's Gospel is also equally impressive: «If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed» (Mt 9:21). Both Jesus' reaction and the end result of this dialogue of faith are quite radical: «Courage, my daughter, your faith has saved you» (Mt 9:22).

We could even affirm that God gladly lets our good faith to “manipulate” him. What, instead, He does not admit is that we try to tempt him with our mistrust. This was the case with Zechariah, who asked evidence from Gabriel, the archangel: «Then Zechariah said to the angel, ‘How shall I know this?’» (Lk 1:18). The Archangel did not shrink an inch: «And the angel said to him in reply, ‘I am Gabriel, who stand before God (...). But now you will be speechless and unable to talk until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their proper time’» (Lk 1:19-20). And so it was.

It is He who wants to “oblige and commit himself” with our faith: «So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened» (Lk 11:9). He is our Father and He does not want to refuse anything that is convenient for his children.

But we must entrust our petitions to him with confidence; confidence and naturalness with God require treatment: to trust somebody we must know him; and to know him we must treat him. Thus, «faith provokes prayer, and when prayer arises it makes faith strong» (St. Augustine). Let us not forget the praise the Virgin Mary deserved: «Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!»
(Lk 1:45).

Abbé Antoni CAROL i Hostench

(Lc 1,45).

The Christian life is a witnessing and representative life. We imitate Christ to such manner that we become Christ for our brothers and sisters. It’s here we are called to be prophets of the Lord. God sends us the prophets, not because we are faithful. It’s simply because, God is full of mercy. Thus we too have to take in to our hearts that we are sent by the Lord as prophets, knowing well that the Lord’s people are going to reject us,  and be merciful in our human approach.  He does not want to take away the means He has left us for our conversion. WE are the hope of the Lord, so that His people be converted and believe. Even to the rebellious people  the Lord has willed to choose a prophet and said to the prophet that by his mere presence that "They will know that there is a prophet in their midst. "

The faithful are invited to lift their hearts towards this God who loves us and learn to handle the rejection of the people in a right spirit, with the divine love and mercy. A heart that is moving toward this God will discover the presence of these prophets, sent by the Lord. We need not force ourselves, unless and otherwise demanded by the Lord. The presence such true prophets of the Lord will be our hope and the hope of the world. That's why some people in our community are able to live a peaceful life, despite failures, pains and sufferings. We find them always happy and internally peaceful. These people were and are well aware that this God does not remove our problems or worries, which we ourselves can handle them, but He gives us courage and hope.

Even though this hope is accessible to all, only those who look at the world with an eye of faith can identify it. A look of faith, longs and searches the signs of the divine presence, not only in oneself, but also in the entire world. That is why, these kind of people know how to rejoice even in their own illness, the healing of another. Even if he sees nothing palpable, he is able to remember the story of salvation where the people of God were loved and accompanied and he/she continues to trust in the Lord's providence.

How does he discover this presence of God? It is in the weaknesses and limits, they discover how wonderfully the Lord accompanies them. Here he learns to recognize his weaknesses without bearing any judgment and accepts them as a means of grace. The more I recognize my weakness, the more I would recognize the means available in me and around me. It is wonderful to hear this from St. Paul, "For when I am weak, then I am strong. ". In such situations we will certainly feel the divine power in us. Since man is trapped by appearance and history, without being able to verify the content of the truth, he is not able to cross the wall of visibility to invisibility, thus fails drastically to identify the divine presence.

The readings of the day, especially the Gospel of the day, tell us exactly this truth and the paradox of life. God does not abandon anyone. Yet, in our weakness, we are not able to discover Him and his accompaniment and grace in our daily lives. In the gospel of the day, this people of Nazareth saw the messenger of God as ordinary beings, and we treat such people today as our wins and fancies. The Lord is here among us, we do not recognize him, for we are looking for an extraordinary being, and our God has chosen to reveal himself in the weakness of man, in a little child. If we cannot identify this presence of God among us, we have not yet understood the gift of incarnation. Let us not lose our hope in the Lord. He is always at work and certainly is a faithful God. Have a wonderful Sunday.

Abbé Joaquim FORTUNY i Vizcarro
(Cunit, Tarragona, Espagne)

«Suis-moi»

+ Abbé Pere CAMPANYÀ i Ribó
(Barcelona, Espagne)
