My Homily

All Saints' Day is a feast of hope, a divine hope that God gives to the humanity in His Son. All are called to this holiness of life, in our own limited way. Tomorrow we will commemorate the faithful departed and pray for them. All the two celebrations are closely related, because we hope, thanks to the mercy of God and our prayers that our deceased brothers will get once again an opportunity to join this immense crowd before God, face-to-face, that they may enter this Kingdom in heaven.

Our Christian faith is founded in this hope, to be able to look at Christ,  face to face in Heaven, as our mediator, before the Father. The beatitudes are the gateways. And all the beatitudes are so linked that we can not separate them. I will allow myself to compare the Kingdom of God and the beatitudes with a room, and  I will compare the beatitudes as the doors of this room. To be happy and enter in this room, one door will suffice us.

The saints we know have travelled the same path as ours, and they assure us that a heavenly life is possible on earth. They have lived an ordinary life, in an extraordinary manner. Even if we find ourselves in the desert, from time to time in confusion, if we put our trust in the providence of the Lord, if we remain faithful to his call, despite our weaknesses, we can give the fruits like a tree planted on the river bank, at the proper time. Their fidelity to the Word of God, allowed them to count them among the elites in heaven.

They are in the house that God has prepared and we would already like to be there. Our life on earth is full of trials and failures. We are both fragile and strong. When confronted by difficulties, we fix our eyes on the Cross, in the certainty that it will lead us to the resurrection. The feast of All Saints gives us this hope and it is based on the resurrection of the Lord.

Dear brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ, all the Beatitudes is a path of happiness, towards peace and joy. Happy the man who puts his trust in the Lord, says the psalm. God will not take away our daily difficulties, but He gives us the strength to confront them bravely. If we remain faithful to His call, He assures us of the divine accompaniment and grace. He says to us, like his Father, be merciful, be humble and pure, we will see the Kingdom of God. "Today, with me, you will be in paradise" The message of this teaching is clearly clear, "Rejoice, be glad."

Gospel text

(Lc 13,18-21):

Jesus continued speaking, «What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? Imagine a person who has taken a mustard seed and planted it in the garden. The seed has grown and become like a small tree, so that the birds of the air shelter in its branches». And Jesus said again, «What is the kingdom of God like? Imagine a woman who has taken yeast and hidden it in three measures of flour until it is all leavened».

The Application

Jesus searches the various images to make us to understand the Kingdom of God. With one single parable Jesus finds difficult to contain all the mysteries of the Kingdom of God. So, me as an ordinary human being, I don’t search to understand every elements of this Kingdom of God. All that I would to take from these parables is, that God continues to work and I need to have patience. Just like the mustard seed that becomes the source for a multitude and yeast which transforms everything, I know that this Kingdom of God will be too.

I personally, would like to be this earth which gives this seed the possibility to grow and multiply. My desire is to be this flour that the Lord transforms. I believe by the faith that the Lord has already implanted in my heart through the baptism, the Word and it is already in me working. It pushes me where I don’t like to be, asking me to do, exactly what He wants me to do. I pray to the Lord that with His grace, I may be able to give much fruit, though little it may be, in my petite capacity.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

The Word of God operates in us like leaven, by Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD)

"The leaven is small in quantity, yet it immediately seizes the whole mass and quickly communicates its own properties to it. The Word of God operates in us in a similar manner. When it is admitted within us, it makes us holy and without blame. By pervading our mind and heart, it makes us spiritual. Paul says, 'Our whole body and spirit and soul may be kept blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ' (1 Thessalonians 5:23). The God of all clearly shows that the divine Word is poured out even into the depth of our understanding... We receive the rational and divine leaven in our mind. We understand that by this precious, holy and pure leaven, we may be found spiritually unleavened and have none of the wickedness of the world, but rather be pure, holy partakers of Christ." (excerpt from COMMENTARY ON LUKE, HOMILY 96)

«What is the kingdom of God like?»

+ Fr. Francisco Lucas MATEO Seco
(Pamplona, Navarra, Spain)

Today, the liturgical texts, through these two parables, place before our eyes one of the characteristics of the Kingdom of God: it is something that flourishes slowly —as a mustard seed— but, eventually, grows to offer shelter to the birds in its trees. Tertulian said it like this: «We come from yesterday and we fill everything». With this parable, Our Lord encourages us to patience, fortitude and hope. These virtues are especially necessary for those who devote themselves to propagate the Kingdom of God. We must be patient, and with God's grace and human cooperation, wait for the planted seed to grow while profoundly embedding its roots in the good soil to gradually become a tree. In the first place, we need to have faith in the virtuality —fecundity— contained in the seed of the Kingdom of God. This seed is the Word; it is also the Eucharist that is planted in us through Communion. Our Lord Jesus Christ compared himself to «a kernel of wheat that falls to the ground and dies (…). But if it dies, it produces many seeds» (Jn 12:24).

The Kingdom of God, our Lord goes on, is similar to «the yeast a woman has taken and hidden in three measures of flour until it is all leavened» (Lk 13:21). Here also the yeast capacity to leaven all the dough is mentioned. This is what happens with “the rest of Israel” which the Old Testament mentions: the rest will have to save and leaven all the people. Continuing on with the parable, we only need the yeast inside the dough, getting to the people, to be like salt that preserves from corruption and makes all food to taste (cf. Mt 5:13). Time is also of essence so that it can carry out with its function by and by.

Parables encouraging patience and the hopeful certainty; parables referring to the Kingdom of God and to the Church, and that are also applied to the growth of this same Kingdom in each of us.

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 13,18-21):

Abbé Francesc JORDANA i Soler
(Mirasol, Barcelona, Espagne)

Every dominical celebration is a get together of the people of God, and this faithful who long to hear the Word of God, are fully aware the necessity to have an open mind and heart. In the first reading we are invited to welcome each other as they are, especially by reminding us of our own story. God draws our attention that the weak, the hungry, the oppressed, the immigrants are our brothers who need us. Since we are the children of God, since He accepts us as we are, with our weaknesses and our limits, we try to follow him faithfully, by our acts of charity. He is our Father, the Father of all, who listens to the cry of every poor man in front of our door.

He is our rock, on this rock of love,  we build our house. The man who puts his trust in this Rock will be like a tree planted on the river bank , which gives fruit in time. How can a man forget or ignore this God who saves us? We know from our history that this God who accompanied the people of Israel, is still accompanying us through this holy church. Church helps us to understand, how much God loves us and she keeps reminding us of our baptismal vocation, 'hold the Light always on' and our Christian duty, 'to love one another as I have loved you'.

This word 'love' is very often used in a wild way, that man loves his dish, loves this flower, he loves everything and everyone. When we say, 'I love you', say exactly what? We must look at Jesus, how He has loved us and how He still loves us.

By his obedience, He has created for us a divine proximity, and by his incarnation He has perpetuated this closeness. By the same incarnation, He revealed to us the divine plan, the project of salvation. Like Him, on our part, we must seek the divine presence in us, discover and feel this closeness through the Holy Spirit, who continues to accompany us and protect us. It is in this closeness and intimacy, we present ourselves before the Lord, so that He discovers us and transforms us.

Jesus participated in our suffering, from birth to death. By his incarnation He purified our birth and by his death he offered us the resurrection. God allowed himself to be discovered in Jesus Christ and in Him He committed himself for the good of all. Like Him, we must discover God by letting ourselves be avaible for others to discover us and  commit to the fulfillment of the divine will.

To love an unknown and invisible God is easy and to love the neighbour known and before you, it is difficult. Jesus reminds us that divine love is best expressed in human love. We cannot love an invisible God, without being able to love one another, who make th

is God visible. There is a lot of poor Lazarus in front of our door. Let's get out of our places of security and open our doors. We must learn to take the steps towards neighbours who are in the peripheries of our society, who hope for our attention. It is here we will discover that God of love, who is waiting for us. Amen.

Gospel text

(Lc 6,12-19):

Jesus went out into the hills to pray, spending the whole night in prayer with God. When day came, He called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them whom He called apostles: Simon, whom He named Peter, and his brother Andrew, James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; Matthew and Thomas; James son of Alpheus and Simon called the Zealot; Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who would be the traitor.

Coming down the hill with them, Jesus stood on a level place. Many of his disciples were there and a large crowd of people who had come from all parts of Judea and Jerusalem and from the coastal cities of Tyre and Sidon. They gathered to hear him and be healed of their diseases; likewise people troubled by evil spirits were healed. The entire crowd tried to touch him because of the power that went out from him and healed them all.

The Application

I believe that the prayer is a response to the call of God, particularly to listen to Him. Thus every prayer should push us towards action. I am convinced that the baptised should be contemplative of the Word of God and active in the accomplishment of the same Word. Just like Jesus, every act should find its source and meaning in the prayer.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers:

Jesus chose fishermen and tax collectors to be apostles, by Ambrose of Milan, 339-397 A.D.

"It says, 'He called his disciples, and he chose twelve of them,' whom he appointed sowers of the faith, to spread the help of human salvation throughout the world. At the same time, observe the heavenly counsel. He chose not wise men, nor rich men, nor nobles, but fishermen and tax collectors, whom he would direct, lest they seem to have seduced some by wisdom, or bought them with riches, or attracted them to their own grace with the authority of power and nobility. He did this so that the reasoning of truth, not the grace of disputation, should prevail." (excerpt fromEXPOSITION OF THE GOSPEL OF LUKE 5.44)

«Went out into the hills to pray»

+ Fr. Albert TAULÉ i Viñas
(Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we may contemplate a full day in the life of Jesus. A life with two clear sides: prayer and action. If, as Christians, we are to imitate Jesus' life, we cannot prescind of any of these two dimensions. All Christians, even those who are consecrated to a contemplative life, have, and must have, certain moments for praying and certain others for action. The length of time for each one may, of course, vary. We can see that even friars and nuns in close orders devote a good part of their time to some kind of work. On the other hand, those of us that are more “secular”, if we wish to imitate Jesus, we should not carry out a frantic activity without spreading it with a prayer. St. Jerome says: «Even though the Apostle ordered us to pray all the time, (...) we must devote to this exercise certain previously determined hours».

Did Jesus need these lengthy hours of lonely prayer, when everybody else was asleep? Theologians study the psychology of Jesus man: up to which point had He direct access to divinity and up to which point was He «one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin» (He 4:15). To the point we consider him closer to us, his praying “practice”, must be evidently a clear example for us.

Once we have well established our praying, it only remains for us to imitate him in action. In today's fragment, we can see him “organizing the Church”, that is, choosing those who were to be his future evangelists, the followers of his mission on earth: «When day came, He called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them whom He called apostles» (Lk 6:13). We find him, later on, healing all type of sicknesses. «Everyone in the crowd sought to touch him because power came forth from him and healed them all» (Lk 6:19), the Evangelist says. So that our identification with him may be complete, we only need that this power to heal everybody may also come forth from us. This will only be possible if we remain in him so that we can bear plenty of fruit (cf. Jn 15:4).

Texte de l'Évangile

(Lc 6,12-19):

+ Abbé Albert TAULÉ i Viñas
(Barcelona, Espagne)

Abbé Frederic RÀFOLS i Vidal
(Barcelona, Espagne)

(Lc 12,49-53):

Jesus said to his disciples, «I have come to bring fire upon the earth and how I wish it were already kindled; but I have a baptism to undergo and what anguish I feel until it is over! Do you think that I have come to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on, in one house five will be divided; three against two, and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father; mother against daughter and daughter against mother; mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law».

The Application

I would like to invite you all to take few words from today’s gospel and contemplate their meaning and which meaning we add to it for our daily applications. Certainly the words like fire, peace and division need not some deep understanding. Without entering into the biblical meaning, I wish that we take for an example ‘fire’ and meditate, what kind of fire that Jesus desires and what kind of fire that I personally ignite today. My fire destroys what, sin or peace? What kind of division Jesus desired and what kind of peace that I install in my surrounding, etc.? These kind of personal interrogation and their sincere answers will be the best way of gospel application. Have a wonderful day.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers

The fire of the Gospel and being baptized in the Holy Spirit, by Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD)

"We affirm that the fire that Christ sent out is for humanity's salvation and profit. May God grant that all our hearts be full of this. The fire is the saving message of the Gospel and the power of its commandments. We were cold and dead because of sin and in ignorance of him who by nature is truly God. The gospel ignites all of us on earth to a life of piety and makes us fervent in spirit, according to the expression of blessed Paul (Romans 12:11). Besides this, we are also made partakers of the Holy Spirit, who is like fire within us. We have been baptized with fire and the Holy Spirit. We have learned the way from what Christ says to us. Listen to his words: 'Truly I say to you, that except a man be born of water and spirit, he cannot see the kingdom of God' (John 3:5). It is the divinely inspired Scripture's custom to give the name of fire sometimes to the divine and sacred words and to the efficacy and power which is by the Holy Spirit by which we are made fervent in spirit." (excerpt from COMMENTARY ON LUKE, HOMILY 94)

«I have come to bring fire upon the earth»

Fr. Joan MARQUÉS i Suriñach
(Vilamarí, Girona, Spain)

Today, the Gospel presents us Jesus as a person of great ambitions: «I have come to bring fire upon the earth and how I wish it were already kindled!» (Lk 12:49). Jesus would like to see the fire of charity and virtue already burning. As if He would be referring to it in passing! He has to undergo a baptism, that is, the trial of the Cross, and He feels anguished until it is all over. It’s only natural, Jesus has plans, and He is in a hurry to see them accomplished. We could say He has a “Divine Impatience”. We also have ideas and projects, and we would also like to see them fulfilled straightaway. Time gets in the way. «What anguish I feel until it is over!» (Lk 12:50).

It is the stress of life. It is the anxiety anyone with great projects feels. On the other hand, having no desires is like remaining at a standstill, dead, restrained; it is being sad, embittered, as being one who derives pleasure from reprehending those who actually work. People who are moving and cause others to move, who are progressing and cause others to progress, are ambitious people.

Have great aspirations! Train your goals onward and upward! Seek your personal perfection, that of your family, that of your work, that of your deeds, that of the assignments you receive. The saints have always aspired to the highest goals. They have not been afraid to face efforts and stress. They have moved. Carry on, move, too! Remember St. Augustine's words: «If you say enough, you are lost. Go further, keep going. Don't stay in the same place, don't go back, don't go off the road. Who does not move forward, stops; who keeps thinking of the starting point, goes backwards; he who reneges goes off the road. It is better to limp along that way than to stride along some other route». And he adds: «If want to be what you are not yet, you must always be displeased by what you are. For where you are pleased with yourself there you have stopped. Keep adding, keep walking, keep advancing». Are you advancing or have you stopped? Implore the help of the Blessed Virgin, Mother of Hope!
