Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean

Scripture: John 6:37-40 (alternate reading: Luke 14:12-14)

37 All that the Father gives me will come to me; and him who comes to me I will not cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me; 39 and this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up at the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that every one who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day."

Homily

Today the universal Church is commemorating the faithful departed. A busy day of remembrance, memory, recognition, thanks, etc., with visits to cemeteries accompanied by feelings and prayers. We are human beings and sometimes we let ourselves animated by the emotions rather than the intelligence and the faith, the Christian faith that invites us to hope.

The first reading that we have chosen for this day (Wis. 2,23; 3, 1-6,9), helps us to recognize the meaning of life, eternal life, life in God, the immortality of the man that God created in his image, in an imperishable existence. Life belongs to God and today we give thanks to Him for all He has done to us through our brothers and sisters.

We pray not only for all those we know, but also to all those who have no one to pray, known and unknown faces. As Claretians, we pray for the Claretian brothers who served us in this parish, like PP. Thomas, Caesar, Joseph Benoit, etc. You may have yours, very close to you. Let us pray together as a Christian community to our merciful Lord.

As Martha and Mary, we too do our mourning for our deceased brothers and sisters, but with the hope of resurrection. Jesus invites us with Martha to take a step further: Believing in Jesus and the resurrection. Jesus did not come to judge us, but by Him that the world is saved. It is in this truth that we pray for our brothers and sisters who have left this world.

Jesus came to prepare us for eternal life. He is our way, our truth and our life. He promised us that He will prepare a place for us in heaven. Let us not be upset like the others, told us St. Paul. Have confidence, faith in Jesus Christ will save us. Our faith is linked to the risen Lord and He is alive. Let us allow ourselves to be transformed by the resurrection of the Lord. When we mourn, we must not forget the joy of the resurrection of Lazarus. The Lord will raise our brothers and sisters. Entrust their souls to the Lord, who alone can give us the reason to hope in the death, because He has already won for us the death by His resurrection.

Tous Saints/ All Saints Day.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Matthieu 5,1-12a.

Amen.

Scripture: Matthew 5:1-12a (alternate reading: Mark 12:28-34)

1 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down his disciples came to him. 2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. 8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 "Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven

Homily

On this day of All Saints day, the Church offers us the Beatitudes for meditation and it also invites us to put them into practice. Whatever be the significance of the history of this feast that Jacques de Voragine, the archbishop of Genoa narrates to us, it is important that we discern the main reason of celebrating this feast day, without ignoring the main intention of the day: the resurrection, the commemoration of saints unknown or non-declared, etc.

The day obviously asks us to reflect on holiness, the meaning which can be understood as perfect happiness that we arrive to a destination where nothing more is to be desired and the end is certainly the perfect union with God, by participating in His Holiness by putting into practice the beatitudes that Jesus proposes to us today in the gospel. The Gospel of the day tells us that "holiness is welcoming the Word of God, faithfulness and trust in Jesus, goodness, justice, love, forgiveness and peace. "

The all Saints day invites us to live a life of holiness in our own way, where ever we may be placed in the society, in simplicity, in sharing, in reconciliation, by keeping our door open to all, even to our enemies. This proposition is simple to apply in our daily life and practicable not only to the consecrated people like clergy, religious or secular, the so called elite of the present time, but all. All the baptized are invited. Be perfect as the Heavenly Father is perfect, is the main invitation which is open to us all individually to each and every one Christian or non-Christian.

Some of us are privileged to bear within us the name or names of the saints. Big thanks to our parents and we look to our elders with lots of gratitude, particularly those who have chosen a name of a saint for us. Some of the saints recognized by the Church are known to us in our present time or for some of us may be had the occasion to have personally met them or heard them. We must revive this important moment of life daily and reminding of us the same experience and the dedication we had at that time to follow Jesus more closely and intimately. It is already a path that leads us to Jesus, to His Father.

We know that the saints have not become saints overnight. They had doubts as we, fears and questions too. Yet their lives on the earth do tell us that they were animated by the Holy Spirit, we felt the divine presence in them by their words, through their testimony or by their presence. They were really friends of Jesus in words and deeds. 'You are no longer servants, you are my friends,' said the Lord. Can we become his friends?

The Beatitudes are a path to happiness, a path to the Lord. The Saints were happy, even in their suffering, because they could participate in the suffering of the Lord. God does not want us to suffer. He wants us to be happy, not only in heaven but also on earth. It is our joy of living as Christians will give a good testimony to this world that blocks all paths that lead to God, the source of our joy. God wants us to be holy, the living saints in this world for each other. Like the saints, we must know how to love and forgive unconditionally. I wish you all a Happy feast day. Amen.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 14,1.7-11.

Scripture: Luke 14:1, 7-11

1 One sabbath when he went to dine at the house of a ruler who belonged to the Pharisees, they were watching him. 7 Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he marked how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, 8 "When you are invited by any one to a marriage feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest a more eminent man than you be invited by him; 9 and he who invited you both will come and say to you, `Give place to this man,' and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, `Friend, go up higher'; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. 11 For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

The message

“For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." Though this demand of the Lord is little paradox, it is the simple truth of life. How to fill when it is not empty? How to climb without being in a lower place? How to give without having?

The real humility can be understood, not in reducing oneself or of submission, rather, a fruit of self-realization. It is changing the tack from self-oriented, towards the other oriented approach. It is the respect that we accord to the other person as the children of God, a respect that we reserve for God. It is seeing God in others.

If we understand humility in a right perceptive, we will never seek the best place, because we will reserve it for others. The more we given the more we get. The one who receives gives what we he has received and the one who gives receives more than what he has given. Let us be wise today. To get more, we should learn to give. The true humility will never put us down, rather it will rise us up.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 14,1-6.

Scripture: Luke 14:1-6

1 One Sabbath when he went to dine at the house of a ruler who belonged to the Pharisees, they were watching him. 2 And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy. 3 And Jesus spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?" 4 But they were silent. Then he took him and healed him, and let him go. 5 And he said to them, "Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well, will not immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?" 6 And they could not reply to this.

The message

It is interesting to notice that even the head of the Pharisees does invite Jesus at table. Sadly those who are invited with Jesus look for an occasion to put Jesus in trouble. Jesus takes this opportunity to teach them what is essential, from their own actions. It is important that we take such simple life examples to teach people.

This healing does help us to orient our own priorities in life. The law of the land or the charity and compassion. Jesus is asking us to choose the better part. Look everyone with compassion and love. This way of living will help us to identify those who are in need of us. As Christians and disciples of Jesus, we should take the initiative to do good and we don’t need any invitation, because the invitation is in our baptismal vocation.

Today let us look in and around us and find our neighbours, particularly those who are in need of us. Have a good day.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 13,31-35.

In English

Scripture: Luke 13:31-35

31 At that very hour some Pharisees came, and said to him, "Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you." 32 And he said to them, "Go and tell that fox, `Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course. 33 Nevertheless I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.' 34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not! 35 Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, `Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'"

The message

Jesus is warning the elite of the society. He affirms that He will accomplish the will of the Father, come what may. There is a certain serenity in this opposition, because of the filiation with His Father. He is here to do the will of the Father and the ‘will’ is to bring all in the Father.

Even though the passion is quite alive in the heart of Jesus, it is His love for the Father and to do His will that animates the mission of Jesus. It is in this love that He has accepted the incarnation, the death and the resurrection.

Only those who understand this divine love for the humanity in Jesus will be able to ascertain like Saint Paul “who will separate us from the love of Christ?” In this love, no one can stop our mission, the mission we have received from the Lord, in love and for love.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 6,12-19.

Scripture: Luke 6:12-19 (alternate reading: Luke 13:22-30)

12 In these days he went out to the mountain to pray; and all night he continued in prayer to God. 13 And when it was day, he called his disciples, and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles; 14 Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, 15 and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. 17 And he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; 18 and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came forth from him and healed them all.

The message

We are called, anointed and sent by the Lord in mission, particularly where He himself has to go. It is certainly sure that we represent the Lord in our mission. Since the mission of the Lord was essentially to do the will of the Father, we are imperatively called not only to follow Jesus, but also through Jesus, know the Father and His will.

Jesus’ in prayer does help us to understand the role of prayer to comprehend the will of the Father. Since He has chosen these disciples and raised them to be His Apostles after a deep prayer, it is certainly important to realize how the Lord has chosen them and from where He got the inspiration. Thus the meditation, contemplation will be the key for our mission too.

God has chosen simple people to communicate the message of God in a simple way. The simplicity in our life and relationship is important. We are called to be like the children. Let us try to be simple today and announce the Good News not only by our words, but very importantly by our witnessing life, filled with love and compassion.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 13,18-21.

In English

Scripture: Luke 13:18-21

18 He said therefore, "What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches." 20 And again he said, "To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21 It is like leaven which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened."

The message

Jesus has used lot of parable to explain to us about the kingdom of God. It shows the mystical aspect of the Kingdom of God and our incapacity to understand it fully. However these parables do help us to understand certain aspect of the kingdom of God.

First it is like a mustard seed, though very little, it is able to shelter the birds of the sky. If we have this kingdom of God, and try to live in a dignified way as the member of this kingdom, we too will be able to welcome and give shelter to a multitude. It is important that we become member of this kingdom by systematically and radically following the teaching of Jesus, the only door to the eternal life.

Secondly, we need not have plenty to transform this world. It is enough that we posse like mustard seed, like a salt, like a small light. Like a leaven, the kingdom God is able to transform everything where we are in contact. By our very presence, like that of light which illumines, we too, by the grace of God, will be able to transform the world around us.

Thirdly, we will never be able to understand how God works in this world. All that is expected of us is, to be a mediator between the seed (God) and the land (world) which produces. Let us continue to sow the seed in the world and God will take care of the multiplication.

On this occasion of the feast of Fr.Claret, our founder, for my english readers I present the apostolic prayer of Fr.Claret with a claretion explanation. The meditation is not of mine, but initiated by the claretion spirituality.

‘O my God and my Father, may I know you and make you known; love you and make you loved; serve you and make you served; praise you and make all creatures praise you.’

APOSTOLIC PRAYER

This prayer is universally known as Fr Claret’s ‘apostolic prayer’. It is possibly one of the most well-known and popular phrases he wrote. In it there is a double movement: towards God and towards others.

· ’God’ and ‘Father’ appear united in the Claretian prayer. This union is extremely fertile. It unites two experiences: Divine transcendence and his merciful love. Therefore, praying this prayer awakes a purification of God’s image in the one who prayers, making it evangelical. Whoever prays it with attention and faith accurately expresses and effectively nourishes his condition as creature and child.

· The whole prayer is imbued with gratitude. It contains no trace of Prometheism. For this reason, after the initial invocation the verb ‘may’ is added. Beginning the prayer in this way implies a sense of otherness and also of gratitude. What is asked will be received as a gift.

· The four double petitions present with four verbs. United, they indicate a programme of spiritual growth and at the same time a pastoral programme: ‘Know, love, serve and praise’. Today, as always, or perhaps more than ever, we need to know and make God known because he is greatly unknown and ignored. It is essential to love God and make him loved because He, rather than loved, is usually feared and regarded with suspicion. Furthermore, we must serve him and make him served because many people frequently tend to manipulate and use him. Finally, choral praise of God is the peak of all pastoral action and all paths of spiritual growth: divine praise, signified in the liturgy, is the summit and goal of Christian life.

The proposal for you, who meditates on these lines, is clear: Pray the apostolic prayer slowly. Linger on each of the four petitions. How about learning it off by heart? At the very least, you can keep it in your pocket and pray it frequently.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 12,54-59.

Scripture: Luke 12:54-59

54 He also said to the multitudes, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, `A shower is coming'; and so it happens. 55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, `There will be scorching heat'; and it happens. 56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky; but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? 57 "And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?58 As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. 59 I tell you, you will never get out till you have paid the very last copper."

The message

The first reading of the day may help us to understand our weakness and the necessity to remain attached to the Lord. Saint Paul reminds us that our body is weak and the mind is strong. Though we desire to do good, at time we crumble by doing just the opposite. With a strong faith foundation, we will have the courage to do what the Lord asks us to do.

Jesus is reminding us that God has given us sufficient intelligence to see the time and discern what is best for us and for the people of God. If we allow our intelligence to guide us, with a firm faith in the Lord, it is possible that we may profit the grace the Lord has accorded to us, to do always what is good and pleasing before the eyes of the Lord.

People with faith can help us to read the present time in the light of the Lord and with the true interpretation of these signs available to all, we may be able to know God and love Him. Why to wait for the sings to love and forgive? The life and the message of the Lord are not sufficient for us?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 12,49-53.

Car désormais cinq personnes de la même famille seront divisées : trois contre deux et deux contre trois ;

Scripture: Luke 12:49-53

49 "I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled! 50 I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how I am constrained until it is accomplished! 51 Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division; 52 for henceforth in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three; 53 they will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against her mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."

The message

Though the gospel message seems to be in contradiction to the Peace and the unity that the Lord has proposed, if we look deep in to the meaning of the fire and the division that the Lord desire to establish, we will discover the real message that this fire and the division communicate to us.

The fire can be understood both negatively and positively. Positively we can understand as the fire of love. Jesus desire to burn the world with the divine love. Since fire burns and purifies, negatively we can understand this fire is to purify the world and burn the evil with dominates the world.

The division can be understood by which one identifies the truth and be able to choose the truth. It is going beyond the biological bond and building a new relationship with God. It is abandoning everything which will lead us to sin and death and choosing Jesus and life, including our own family members.
