Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 19,11-28.

Le roi lui déclara : “Je vais te juger sur tes paroles, serviteur mauvais : tu savais que je suis un homme exigeant, que je retire ce que je n’ai pas mis en dépôt, que je moissonne ce que je n’ai pas semé ;

Scripture: Luke 19:11-28

11 As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. 12 He said therefore, "A nobleman went into a far country to receive a kingdom and then return. 13 Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten pounds, and said to them, `Trade with these till I come.' 14 But his citizens hated him and sent an embassy after him, saying, `We do not want this man to reign over us.' 15 When he returned, having received the kingdom, he commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by trading. 16 The first came before him, saying, `Lord, your pound has made ten pounds more.' 17 And he said to him, `Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.' 18 And the second came, saying, `Lord, your pound has made five pounds.' 19 And he said to him, `And you are to be over five cities.'

20 Then another came, saying, `Lord, here is your pound, which I kept laid away in a napkin; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man; you take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.' 22 He said to him, `I will condemn you out of your own mouth, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow? 23 Why then did you not put my money into the bank, and at my coming I should have collected it with interest?' 24 And he said to those who stood by, `Take the pound from him, and give it to him who has the ten pounds.' 25 (And they said to him, `Lord, he has ten pounds!') 26 `I tell you, that to every one who has will more be given; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 27 But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me.'" 28 And when he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

The message

Todays’ first reading may help us to understand the importance of faith, particularly when we are confronted with life and death. Whether we like it or not, we will be asked to give answers for all that we have received in life. It is in this faithfulness to our call and faith that we are forced to take some decisions, though they are painful, not only for us, but also for others. If we understand the implication of our decisions, taken before God and in faith, with full responsibility, in love and compassion, though these decisions seems to be painful today, will one day console not only the person who has taken this decision, but to all those who are implicated in this.

The faithfulness to the gifts we have received and our engagement to multiply these gifts received from God, is a baptismal vocation. We are called not only to live our life fully, but be useful to the humanity, if possible to all the creation of the Lord. It is in this multiplication of talents and gifts that we honour and praise God. We know that we can’t do everything, but called to choose the best we can offer to God, because all that God has given to us are good. We don’t choose from good or bad, it is evident that we have to choose the good. It is very clear as we have seen in the first reading that if we choose the Law of the Lord, will give us the gift of martyrdom. In daily life we are caught up between two good things. We need grace to choose the best which will give joy to the humanity and give the priority for what we have directly received from God. And it is not easy.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 19,1-10.

In English

Scripture: Luke 19:1-10

1 He entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 And there was a man named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector, and rich. 3 And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. 4 So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. 5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." 6 So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. 7 And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." 8 And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." 9 And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost."

The message

There are plenty of movements in all the direction. Jesus is moving and the people with Him. Zacchaeus climbs up and called to come down. All the movement stops here and restarts to terminate in the house of Zacchaeus with conversion and joy.

Let us look at Zacchaeus and take initiative to know the truth and to our surprise will receive the invitation to dine with Jesus in a mysterious way and this will end with conversion and unification with God, certainly it will end up joyful.

Little pause of Jesus has awaken not only Zacchaeus, but all, in a different level. If we remain with Jesus, this little pause will help us to see the invisible Zacchaeus, standing in front of us. In life, little pause always does good, good for us and for all others, which will lead us into conversion, for a joyful ending in the Lord. This process of pause, though seems to be waste and very painful, with Jesus, He will by His presence will transform it into a deeper joy that the world will never be able to give us.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 18,35-43.

Scripture: Luke 18:35-43

35 As he drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging; 36 and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant. 37 They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by." 38 And he cried, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" 39 And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" 40 And Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to him; and when he came near, he asked him, 41 "What do you want me to do for you?" He said, "Lord, let me receive my sight." 42 And Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has made you well." 43 And immediately he received his sight and followed him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

The message

Lord help me to discover my blindness in life. Let me cry with all the force possible, “Lord let me receive my sight”, to see the path that you propose to me today. Everything around me seems to be against me, all are asking me to keep silence. Give me the courage and the faith to come to you. Light of the world, please give me your light, so that I may see everything in your light. Amen.

“Rends-moi justice contre mon adversaire.”
Longtemps il refusa ;

In English

Scripture: Luke 18:1-8

1 And he told them a parable, to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. 2 He said, "In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor regarded man; 3 and there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, `Vindicate me against my adversary.' 4 For a while he refused; but afterward he said to himself, `Though I neither fear God nor regard man, 5 yet because this widow bothers me, I will vindicate her, or she will wear me out by her continual coming.'" 6 And the Lord said, "Hear what the unrighteous judge says. 7 And will not God vindicate his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? 8 I tell you, he will vindicate them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man comes, will he find faith on earth?"

The message

All that is important in our spiritual journey is perseverance with deep faith in the loving mercy of the father. If this poor widow remained without being discouraged by the behavior of this judge, it was because she was sure that he will do justice to her.

May at times in our prayer we lack this perseverance. It is because we don't believe that the Lord will respond to our prayers and we don't trust Him. Jesus is telling us that His Father is filled with love and mercy and we can count Him.

Let us begin our day with this confidence of divine love and mercy. And let others know through our love and forgiveness that our Lord is good and loving.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 17,26-37.

Il en était de même dans les jours de Loth : on mangeait, on buvait, on achetait, on vendait, on plantait, on bâtissait ;
mais le jour où Loth sortit de Sodome, du ciel tomba une pluie de feu et de soufre qui les fit tous périr ;

In English

Scripture: Luke 17:26-37

26 As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of man. 27 They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise as it was in the days of Lot -- they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built, 29 but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom fire and sulphur rained from heaven and destroyed them all -- 30 so will it be on the day when the Son of man is revealed. 31 On that day, let him who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away; and likewise let him who is in the field not turn back. 32 Remember Lot's wife. 33 Whoever seeks to gain his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve it. 34 I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. 35 There will be two women grinding together; one will be taken and the other left." 37 And they said to him, "Where, Lord?" He said to them, "Where the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together."

The message

Who is not frightened of the last judgement? We all wish to escape from such eternal punishment. It is quite normal, even to the disciples to know when and how it will happen so that they may be able to escape from such catastrophe.

Jesus gives us a warning to such waiting. It will happen without any advance information. For the people who live in God by loving and forgiving, this warning will never be a frightening incident, because, they will know already that the time has come and will be ready to welcome the Lord with a great joy.

Jesus wishes that we all be prepared to such day by our converted life in God. By living a life fully animated by the divine love, we can prepare ourselves to the last day without any hesitations. Like the eagles who gather together around the dead body, people who live in love, will live in God.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 17,20-25.

The message

In English

Scripture: Luke 17:20-25

20 Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming, he answered them, "The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed; 21 nor will they say, `Behold, here it is!' or `There!' for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you." 22 And he said to the disciples, "The days are coming when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and you will not see it. 23 And they will say to you, `Behold, there!' or `Behold, here!' Do not go, do not follow them. 24 For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of man be in his day. 25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

Le message

We all wish to be member in the kingdom of God and many of us do search for it. Jesus is reminding us that it is related to Him and in Him. The moment we realize His presence in our life and put into practice all that He is asking us to do, we are already in the kingdom of God.

It is like a light which shines. We need not go in search of it, it will shine itself. The kingdom of God is also like this says Jesus. We need not go behind the kingdom of God. All that He is asking us to do is to live in Him and through Him. To live in Him, we should learn to love Him. Live through Him is, to be animated by love alone. The best expression of love is pardon.

Scripture: Luke 17:11-19

11 On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance 13 and lifted up their voices and said, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." 14 When he saw them he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. 15 Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; 16 and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. 17 Then said Jesus, "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? 18 Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" 19 And he said to him, "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well."

The message

Many of us are preparing for the feast of the light and today’s gospel gives light to these people who were living in darkness because of their isolation. It is not the light which is the message of the day, rather gratitude and reconnaissance of all the gifts that we have received from God. It is this behaviour gives us a meaning in our life, helps us to live in hope and nourishes our faith.

Today’s gospel asks us to cry out with hope, if we realise that we are living in darkness or in a situation of isolation. If we are not in such situation and better placed in the society, it is important to take little pause, look around and listen to the cry, which echo every corner of our society. Shall we extent our hands to such cry for peace and justice?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 17,7-10.

Scripture: Luke 17:7-10

7 "Will any one of you, who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep, say to him when he has come in from the field, `Come at once and sit down at table'? 8 Will he not rather say to him, `Prepare supper for me, and gird yourself and serve me, till I eat and drink; and afterward you shall eat and drink'? 9 Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? 10 So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, `We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.'"

The message

Saint Ambrose (c.340-397), Bishop of Milan and Doctor of the Church
On Saint Luke’s Gospel 8, 31-32 (cf SC 52, p. 113)

"We are unprofitable servants"

Let no one boast of what they have done since we owe our service to the Lord in simple justice… We should keep on working for our Lord as long as we live. Recognize, then, that you are a servant employed in a great number of duties. Don’t puff yourself up at being called “child of God” (1Jn 3,1): let us recognize the grace but not forget our nature. Don’t make much of it if you have done your duties well since you have done what you ought to do. The sun fulfils its role, the moon obeys, the angels carry out their duties. Saint Paul, “chosen instrument of the Lord for the gentiles” (cf. Acts 9,15), writes: “I am not fit to be called an apostle because I persecuted the church of God” (1Cor 15,9). And if elsewhere he demonstrates that he is not aware of any blame, he afterwards adds: “But I do not thereby stand acquitted” (1Cor 4,4). Neither should we either; let us not claim praise for ourselves, do not let us anticipate the judgement of God.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Jean 2,13-22.

Scripture: John 2:13-22 (alternate reading: Luke 17:1-6)

13 The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.14 In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers at their business. 15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all, with the sheep and oxen, out of the temple; and he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, "Take these things away; you shall not make my Father's house a house of trade." 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for thy house will consume me." 18 The Jews then said to him, "What sign have you to show us for doing this?" 19 Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." 20 The Jews then said, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?" 21 But he spoke of the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.

The message

The purification of the Temple can be symbolised by the purification of our souls. Saint Paul has said that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. It is important that we don’t commercialise the presence of the Lord by our sins and pleasures of the world.

Today the real church is the people of the Lord. When we speak about the Church, we speak about ourselves. It is important that we realize the importance our function in the world. Since we are called to be the light and salt of the world, it is imperative that we represent the God of mercy and pardon in our human relationship.

By keeping our hearts open to the realities of our time, we will understand the real Church that the Lord wish to build in and through us. It is by purifying ourselves, we will be able to help the Lord to build a holy Church, which will be preserved from commercialisation of spirituality.

Dimanche / Sunday

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Marc 12,38-44.

Amen

Scripture: Mark 12:38-44

38 And in his teaching he said, "Beware of the scribes, who like to go about in long robes, and to have salutations in the market places 39 and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 40 who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation." 41 And he sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the multitude putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came, and put in two copper coins, which make a penny. 43 And he called his disciples to him, and said to them, "Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. 44 For they all contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, her whole living."

Homily

The readings of this Sunday have two women, very ordinary if we look at them with simple society statures, conventional in every possible way, yet exceptional before the eyes of God that Jesus will speak about them in later days. Elijah, one of the great prophets was forced to run in to a foreign city for his own security because of the fear of the queen that God makes use of it to take care of a pagan woman.

These women, in the old testament and gospel, have put their confidance in the Lord and trust in His generosity and providence in an extreme situation that ordinary people will find it difficult to do like them. They have given everything, all that they had. The widow of the Old Testament had seen death very close to her that she prepares herself and her son for the death, without any hope of survival. She was preparing her son for the last day of his life, a simple baked bread, the final hope of life. It is here the prophet is asking them to share with him what she had. A hard decision to make, to give something very precious to an unknown person, believing to an unknown God, of His providence. Even in death she could give everything, even the bread she has reserved for her son. It is here we see the meaning of sharing par excellence.

We give of in charity with what is sparing after prudently saving sufficiently for our future generation. God has done just opposite. He has given us everything, even His only begotten Son. It is in this divine generosity that we are called to act upon. We must open our hearts and feel the sufferings of others. Without knowing the love of God, and only after witnessing His suffering, caused by the suffering of His children, that we will be able to share our goods with others.

The readings of the day invites us to live our lives in truth, all that is revealed in Jesus, the precious truth in the Son who will save us. If these women have given everything, it is because that they have recognized all the gifts they have received from God, their awareness of their duty towards their neighbours, with a recognition of the providence of the Lord. They knew that their God will never abandon them. It is with this confidence that they acted in a mystical way of giving everything to God.

If we are asked to give, it's not because we have, but we see and feel the sufferings of those who do not have. "The great witnesses of charity are often from people who have virtually nothing. But they do not hesitate to risk what little they have to help the neediest. "

They don’t need to advertise on their works. The being is more important than what is appeared or visible. Men of light should seek all that is invisible because others see all that is visible. We need men of God, who help us to see all that are invisible to our naked eyes. "Jesus alert all the baptized of all time against the desire to depend on what is apparently visible to all. Do not be like others who act to be seen. "

We can sum-up today’s message with three words: confidence, sharing and openness. Confidence in the providence of the Lord and the capacity to share all that we have without any reservation and the openness to the new realities which sometime make us to push in an opposite direction. I wish you all a wonderful Sunday.
