Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 10,25-37.

Jésus lui dit : « Tu as répondu correctement. Fais ainsi et tu vivras. »

Scripture: Luke 10:25-37

25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 26 He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read?" 27 And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." 28 And he said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will live." 29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" 30 Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, 34 and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, `Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" 37 He said, "The one who showed mercy on him." And Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

The message

Life is filled with choice. When the heart is not filled with love and compassion, we try to escape from unjust judgements of the society and sometime our own culpability by doing what is correct and good in front of the society.

Jesus is inviting us to raise above from such compulsions of life, sometime rightly justified by constrains and difficulties, and see the self in the other, particularly the poor and needy. By giving a new definition of ‘neighbour’, Jesus is affirming the importance of proximity, not only of physical, but more importantly of the heart and soul.

The moral lesson of the day’s gospel can be translated as love be the foundation of our life: Divine love, which finds its expression in human love. Love the invisible God, by loving the visible presence of God in the humanity. If we learn to look the world and the people particularly with this vision of love, we can easily overcome the social constrains, and raise above the visible compulsions and act like God, by avoiding the reactions, though they may seems to be correct and good that the priest and Levite represent in today’s gospel.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 10,17-24.

Scripture: Luke 10:17-24

17 The seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!" 18 And he said to them, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." 21 In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 22 All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." 23 Then turning to the disciples he said privately, "Blessed are the eyes which see what you see! 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it."

The message

On this feast of Saint Francis, we are given a beautiful text where Jesus ignores the joy of His disciples, because, the causality of this joy is the human pride, though be it of spiritual success or accomplishment.

Jesus knows that a pride heart is closed to the grace of God. A humble heart like that of a child will be very receptive to the revelation of God. God enters when the door is opened. He will never force His grace to us, though He longs to penetrate in to our hearts and makes home in it.

The joy of Jesus is not that we do great things, but to identify the will of the Father and accomplish all that the Father asks of us. The only door to the Father is Jesus. Unless and until we make worthy of ourselves to receive the grace, we will never have the faith in Jesus and without the faith in Jesus, we will never be able to know the Father.

The logic is very clear: let us be humble like the child, and become like them in our thinking and doing, particularly in our obedience, then we will be able to participate in the joy of Jesus and our name will be certainly written in the register of heaven.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Matthieu 18,1-5.10.

In English

Scripture: Matthew 18:1-5, 10 (alternate reading: Luke 10:57-62)

1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" 2 And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them, 3 and said, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 "Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me; 10 "See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.

The message

The human tendency is to attribute anything of this earth to the heavenly realities. Everything in this world is measured by the wealth, power, glory and honour. They imagine that the same attributes can be applied to heaven also. Jesus puts everything upside down, by presenting a child and all those who alike to be the greatest in the heaven.

We are called to reborn once again as a child, be simple and humble in thinking and doing. By choosing a child, Jesus is enlarging this child like community towards the poor, oppressed, afflicted, persecuted, etc. He is asking us to have a divine approach when we encounter such people. A pure, non-manipulated human approach is closer to divine approach.

On this fest of guardian Angels, Jesus is affirming us the presence of these angels and their role in our life, both spiritual and human, mediating and communicating with God in a permanent manner. Their presence though invisible, like that of God, Jesus is affirming that they do a wonderful work, interceding for us before God. Jesus is telling us that the mutual respect and love that we accord to our brothers and sisters, can be easily translated into our love for God.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 10,1-12.

In English

Scripture: Luke 10:1-12

1 After this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to come. 2 And he said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3 Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and salute no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, `Peace be to this house!' 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace shall rest upon him; but if not, it shall return to you. 7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages; do not go from house to house. 8 Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you; 9 heal the sick in it and say to them, `The kingdom of God has come near to you.' 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, 11 `Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off against you; nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.' 12 I tell you, it shall be more tolerable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

The message

While sending the disciples to announce the Good News, Jesus prepares them not only for the opposition, but also teaches them the importance of announcing the peace of the Lord. Before the violence and opposition, Jesus is asking them to be prudent and keep doing good, by ignoring such opposition by passing to another place.

On this feast of little Therese, do pray for all those who carry this name, the missionaries in the world, particularly those who work in a delicate situation. Let’s not forget the Christians of Irak and the neighbouring countries, persecuted for their faith.

In such persecution, it important that we rely upon the providence of the Lord than the security offered by the society by arms and guns. He has promised us to be with us and let us carry on feeling His presence in our mission. Do pray for me, on my feast day, so that I may be a good missionary, where I am sent.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 9,57-62.

In English

Scripture: Luke 9:57-62

57 As they were going along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." 58 And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head." 59 To another he said, "Follow me." But he said, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father." 60 But he said to him, "Leave the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God." 61 Another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home." 62 Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."

The message

Following Jesus is not a child play. It’s a serious decision. Though all are called to be the disciples of Jesus, there are certain conditions that the disciple should merit to be. The first is the grace to be accorded by the Father. Unless and until we receive this grace directly from the Father through Jesus Christ and conferred by the Holy Spirit, it is not possible for us to be the disciple of Jesus.

The second condition is to take up the cross and follow Jesus. If we are not ready to take up our own cross, how would it be possible for us to take up the cross of others? Being the disciple of Jesus is to deny oneself and take the original identity that God has bestowed us. It is not actually losing our own identity, rather losing the false identities that we have accumulated in this world.

Being the disciple of Jesus is to remain engaged in accomplishing the will of the Father. It’s not a part time job, it’s dedicating our lives fully without being deviated or shared. It is to become a clay in the hand of the Potter (God) that He may have the freedom, to give us the form and the identity, He so desires for the mission.

Though these conditions may look apparently harsh from the Lord, it’s by total surrender that we may have the fullness of happiness and Joy that God proposes every day.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Jean 1,47-51.

Nathanaël lui demande : « D’où me connais-tu ?

In English

Scripture: John 1:47-51 (alternate reading: Luke 9:51-56)

47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" 48 Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." 49 Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" 50 Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these." 51 And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man."

The message

Nathanael has chosen the evening hour to see the Light of the World. Jesus reveals to him not only His own identity, but takes Nathanael to have a deeper and closer relationship with His Father. Nathanael is surprised to know that Jesus has already identified Him and Jesus is telling each and every one us that God knows us not one among the crowd, but very personally.

We know through our tradition and biblical knowledge that the angels bring to us God’s message and through them God protect us and guide us. Since these angels are with us, in permanent relation with the Father, we can trust them and hope in their prayer for us. On this feast day, let us raise our prayers through these angels who watch us eternally.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 9,46-50.

In English

Scripture: Luke 9:46-50

46 And an argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. 47 But when Jesus perceived the thought of their hearts, he took a child and put him by his side, 48 and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me; for he who is least among you all is the one who is great." 49 John answered, "Master, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he does not follow with us." 50 But Jesus said to him, "Do not forbid him; for he that is not against you is for you."

The message

The temptation to be always great and the thirst for honour and glory are purely the human desires that the society accept as something good and just. Jesus the Master par excellence sees in a different ways: the one who serves the little ones, the poor, the oppressed, the defend less, etc. For this world there is a contradiction, for God who has sent His only begotten Son, there is justice and correct in this perceptive.

The leaders are not called to lead and serve the people? If the society has lost its hope on our leaders, it is because of their incapacity to serve the society. Let us be humble to accept the little ones in life and we will search for what is good in others.

Le 26ème Dimanche/ Sunday

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Marc 9,38-43.45.47-48.

Jésus répondit : « Ne l’en empêchez pas, car celui qui fait un miracle en mon nom ne peut pas, aussitôt après, mal parler de moi ;

In English

Scripture: Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48

38 John said to him, "Teacher, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he was not following us." 39 But Jesus said, "Do not forbid him; for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon after to speak evil of me. 40 For he that is not against us is for us.41 For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ, will by no means lose his reward.

42 "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung round his neck and he were thrown into the sea. 43 And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell. 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, 48 where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.

Homily

Today we celebrate the 26th Sunday. The theme of the day is: openness to God's goodness and conversion. Although God invites us to participate in its mission, it is not conditioned by our behaviour. He is able to assign the same task to two different people at the same time, ignoring the chosen one, designated by God Himself, for such work. It may look so strange for us, but that how God works. He has chosen Mathew the sinner to announce the Good News. He has chosen Saul and called him for conversion and he became Paul.

If He asks us to participate in His mission, it is because that His mission may become ours and by fulfilling His will that we discover His kindness and generosity. There is no room for jealousy, all are invited to discover this to God and enjoy his love. It is not a exclusive mission entrusted us, but an inclusive mission, shared by all the baptised and non-baptised.

It is possible as Joshua and the apostles that we are attracted by the temptation to block the good works of others in the name of religion, culture, ritual etc. It is important as a Christian that we learn to see the Christian values in these works and give thanks to the Lord for His wonders, without distinction or condition.

The Gospel of the day invites us to conversion and seek the good in our life, because the Spirit of the Lord freely set the condition which will give access to the Kingdom. This gospel presents some rules of conduct. First, the tolerance that allows to recognize the action of God even outside of our communities. Second, recognition that the Kingdom is granted free of charge and to all, and the third, respect for the weak and self-denial. Humility to accept and allow the new comers to take the prominent place in our lives.

Respect this golden rule of the Gospel of the day faithfully, "Do not stop him, for he who does a miracle in my name can not immediately afterwards speak evil of me; he who is not against us is for us.

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 9,43b-45.

Scripture: Luke 9:43-45

43 And all were astonished at the majesty of God. But while they were all marveling at everything he did, he said to his disciples, 44 "Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men." 45 But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

The message

We should never be afraid of taking the cross in our lives. Fear is the greatest enemy of our development. The more we yield to fear, the more we walk opposite direction. This fear block normal functioning of our intelligence and we make blenders.

One of the greatest fear is to forgive, particularly to accept and love our enemies as they are. This is one of the crosses of our daily life that Jesus is asking us to carry, especailly when we have a broken relationship. The day we learn to forgive, the day we will be liberated and feel that we are the children of God and we will be.

The disciples found difficult to see in the humanity of Jesus the divinity, the resurrection through the Cross. How can they digest the death of their loving master and understand the mystery of death and resurrection? Only if we go beyond the visible realities and enter in the invisible truth, we will discover the divinity, particularly the suffering face of God in our brothers and sisters. Are we tempted to reduce the majesty of God in the miracles or the courage to associate the divine majesty to the Cross and the resurrection?

Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint

Luc 9,18-22.

Scripture: Luke 9:18-22

18 Now it happened that as he was praying alone the disciples were with him; and he asked them, "Who do the people say that I am?" 19 And they answered, "John the Baptist; but others say, Elijah; and others, that one of the old prophets has risen." 20 And he said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" And Peter answered, "The Christ of God." 21 But he charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, 22 saying, "The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised."

The message

There are many great teaching of Jesus that make our life rich in faith and help us to grow in this faith. There are very few occasions that Jesus has reserved for His disciples to grow in Him and with Him. Today’s gospel is one such occasions, that invites the disciples to enter deep into Him from the peripheries where the disciples were at ease, like responding who is Jesus for others.

Why this teaching is important? It is because Jesus is revealing the mystery of His death, which is the only way that will lead the humanity to the resurrection that Jesus wishes to offer to us. It is this hope of destroying the death once and for all in His death that gave the reason to announce as a great Good News. Since we have participated in the baptism of the Lord, we will participate also in the resurrection of the Lord. God dies for us so that we may not die anymore.

There are many things like these disciples of the gospel that we don’t understand in our life time. The wiser decision would be to follow Jesus, the goodness par excellence, though the way may be zigzag.
